An answer to a popular question. Can I buy my first tarot deck or should I be gifted one? My personal opinion is that it doesn’t matter. Receiving one as a gift can take forever and if you are already drawn to it then why not take initiative. I also believe that then you can choose one that calls to you intuitively and build a good relationship to it. I bought my first deck and in fact have never been gifted one. If I hadn’t done that then I would never be where I am now. What do you all think!? •ALBUQUERQUE FOR WITCHES• Today I did a mini tour of my fave metaphysical shops in the city of Albuquerque. I’ve posted the videos in my highlights under “ABQ SHOPS” The shops I visited where Blue Eagle Metaphysical and Abitha’s Metaphysical Emporium. Both of these shops are excellent for buying witchcraft supplies and for talking to experts about any questions you may have. In addition there is tarot card readers at both locations for those in need of readings. Both of these stores carry herbs, although Abitha’s has a much larger selection as well as really great prices (they packaged some of their herbs in tiny bags for convenience). I got cinquefoil for 65 cents! I know that if I want to do a spell that I can likely find all of the required elements there. Taper candles are only 1$, oils 6.99, and the herbs are priced per ounce and are very affordable! Other highlights are that this shop sells dressed spell candles ready for use and many of their products are made in shop. Ask for Josh their manager, who is a lovely soul and SUPER knowledgeable and willing to sharr Blue Eagle Metaphysical carries TONS of products. You could browse there for hours. They are the spot for books and altar tools, and additionally have a large selection of crystals and tarot and oracle decks. (You can see in the video). Unique things here, a lot of Egyptian statues. I love to read #witchcraft books and recently I read a book of voodoo spells. I don’t practice voodoo,and I really respect its origins and traditions. This book was designed to give one. Knowledge of the Lwas and to explain some basic spellwork! I found it very informative and as always with respect wanted to share a tip from the spellbook. One of the things I found most interesting was the use of “voodoo dolls” (which I call poppets to not appropriate the term) for healing work. In this book they suggest using a white doll to attract health and wellness. You can either buy or make a poppet. Some common items used to make them are cloth, felt, and some people use natural materials like corn husks. The book said to also make the poppet look as close as possible to you, although I’m sure this varies for people. In need of a beach trip ASAP! This was my last vacation which seems like forever ago to Orlando, FL. I love the ocean, my favorite part of vacation is getting tan on the beach, swimming and having a few drinks. For the new moon I was thinking of some of my goals and I definitely wrote down I want to travel more. I even got myself a gorgeous bathing suit to help make this come true. Just like we have a positive voice in our head we also have a negative one. For some of us the negative voice can sometimes start to seem like its the only one. It becomes an entity in itself if we give it too much power. Our thoughts are capable of shaping our entire existence. But do not fear, the negativity isn’t you, it is just a temporary part of you. Let’s talk about vaginas and how to be more conscious of our language. I love this graphic because it explains something really important about the vulva and vagina. Not everyone with a vagina identifies as a woman and not every woman has a vagina! It’s important to keep your language gender inclusive when possible. On a personal level I really don’t identify with anything referring to my organs as a “womb.” For many people this is a term that’s empowering. There is even a lot of womb centric magick and history that I value and that I think needs to be heard. This is a great example of how one term can be very great for some folks and not for others. I associate womb with children, with motherhood and with the power to hold life. Again it is absolutely INCREDIBLE that a body can do this. I honor womb magick and those who practice it. I honor mothers and aspiring mothers alongside the people whom don’t feel this way! To me the term womb is triggering. I mentioned before that I don’t want to have children, and I get really uncomfortable when my organs are associated with childbirth and reproduction. This is a term I don’t think I can ever use to describe my body. This term feels very cisgender to me and I just don’t identify with it! I hope this encourages everyone to be more inclusive of their language and find power in whatever they want to call their genitals and their power. Okay ya’ll I know very little about astrology but I sure do FEEL it. @thevoluptuouswitch provided me with some much needed insight into what was happening though. I didn’t suffer from too much negative retrograde energy but I was experiencing some of the rough and tough communication issues caused by the Mars-Saturn square. There was a lot of inner tension I had to face and honestly I was being unpleasant and harsh to others during this transit. After I reflected on my behaviors I felt sorry for some of my words. These planets showed me the internal work I have to do and boy is it tough, but I’m gonna do it. Frequently during tough transits I also get stuck in excessive self criticism and that does nothing to help. Fortunately I caught myself and now I know what I need to work on. It’s ongoing for sure. Anyway, I also know there are particular times when I am really sensitive and it can get hard to stay grounded or to even stop crying for that matter. FULL MOONS for me are both empowering yet always bring out my emotional issues. I tend to experience really heavy energy during them. The NEW MOONS I really enjoy because I feel more cleansed and recharged so I’m excited for that to come. What are your tough astrological transits? I want to learn more. Ya’ll this is my little cousin Miranda. She was the reason we visited Mexico. She was baptized last Saturday right before she turned 1 year old. I don’t believe in many aspects of Catholicism especially the oppressive ones but there is a lot of mysticism in some rituals and practices of the church. I tried to be open minded during the baptism and observe the ceremony from a different perspective where I did see the strong spiritual-magical aspect of the ceremony. During the mass the deacon even called the sacramental oils “Pagan” which shocked me! I must say for the first time in years I FELT the presence of the holy spirit, of something different, something that wasn’t human inside the church. I also felt this intense energy coming from the baptismal candles, my parents (whom were her Godparents) carried this “light” and gifted it to her and I really felt as if they gave her real protection and love in that gesture. I spent a lot of time observing the babies being baptized and it was through them that I felt the spirit. Children have more pure energy, they evoke differently in my opinion. The deacon anointed each child with two holy oils, some on their chest, some on their crown (their head) which I thought was also very mystical. The best way I can describe what happened is that the child’s energy completely shifted as they were anointed. I watched one baby, probably the youngest of them all even lift up her head and eyes as if she had been touched by a higher power. It was so cool! I felt this energy shift with my little cousin too. She felt so peaceful and joyous. We have all heard the common saying “your vibe attracts your tribe” This got me thinking about what energy I want to embody and why energy is so important! Energy is something universal that anybody can understand. If I’m a healer, a spiritual guide what characteristics are important to embody? Sometimes you have moments where you just have to congratulate yourself! I am so proud of where I am emotionally and mentally these days. I always like to #reflect and see how I’ve left past selves behind. We live in a very career and money driven society. Tonight I was browsing Facebook and seeing posts from friends getting into grad school. In the past, seeing these would have made me spiral into the misery of comparison. For a while I let myself be defined by work. I compared myself to people making more money than me, to my friends whom started medical and law school right after college. I used to feel emotional AGONY from these comparisons. I often felt so unsuccessful that I wanted to take my life. I felt saddened by the prospect of my future. I am in a VERY different place now. I am ABSOLUTELY fulfilled with who I am and it has nothing to do with traditional notions of a career right now. I have found that my happiness matters the most to me, not my job or my income. My EXPERIENCES, my presentness matters so much. I feel as if I am a new me, someone who can celebrate others’ victories without being jealous, someone who has thousands of possibilities ahead of them. I no longer let myself believe in limits, I just give myself patience and time to accomplish things, and I let myself #EVOLVE as I age, as I learn. I may have completely different career goals in the next few years, but I choose the excitement of discovery on the creative path I’m on. As an #indigochild I now feel like I am fulfilling my purpose following an adventurous career path. It’s a joy to feel so in tune with my highest potential and divine work. Every once in a while it is important to check yourself. The path to enlightenment and to greatness will not be cleared if your not spiritually clean. This is different for everyone but being spiritually clean means delving deep into the self and dealing with emotional junk, dealing with any negativity harbored against the self especially. The card PURIFICATION reminds us to do this. You need not be pure in a religious sense, but pure in heart however you define that. Pure in terms of CLARITY with yourself. Don’t have murky waters, dive in them and be ready to swim out. Next, Generosity reminds us that being FORGIVING and GIVING is an essential part of being an admirable person. Think of all the bad examples of leadership we have in this world? Are those people generous? No. They are greedy capitalists and selfish. In Tomas Prower’s Santa Muerte book there is an exercise he suggests doing before working with La Muerte. I really enjoyed it so I wanted to share my response. He asks that you write down how you would explain the Spirit of Death to a child and what her role in the world is. These are just excerpts from a larger paragraph I wrote. Death is the one thing that happens to everyone in the world. Simply put, death is a biological event where your body ceases to sustain life. Although some people think dying is scary, it doesn’t have to be. Many of the dead live in peace and it is actually the living who suffer more than the dead. People can die at any point in their lives because it is their time. Death is natural. The SPIRIT of death is best explained like this. When we die, a beautiful and tall bony lady accompanies us to the side of the dead. She looks like a skeleton, but she is much more than that. She is cloaked in beautiful colors and can look different to many of us. She even wears a crown because she is so special. Think of it this way, there is a friend on the other side to receive you when you die. La Santa muerte is what we call her and she is like a guardian to us while we are alive as well. When we are alive we can build a relationship to her “spirit” because we can’t always see her physically. A spirit is something you believe in and feel but you don’t necessarily see. La Santa Muerte can help us with our health, our love life, and sometimes even with our problems. She does this when we are faithful to her and remember her. We honor and thank her by saying prayers or talking to her. We build her altars to show her we are grateful for what she gives us and so she will grant us a peaceful death. Even as a kid, you can talk to her, she loves everyone equally regardless of who they are or who they like. Most importantly remember she is not someone to be feared! I’m 24 years old. At my age in Meoqui, my parent’s hometown, it is quite common for women to be “settled down” by my age. I was asked multiple times by my family members when I would be having children and getting married. My aunt went on and on about how I would want children as I got a little older. I don’t desire children at my age, and I don’t foresee this changing at all. I am a very sexually liberated person, I love sex. I call myself a proud “slut.” And I am staunchly opposed to the norms of womanhood expected of me by my family and society. If anyone in my family knew that I’m sure they would be disturbed. The norms of lady hood are just not for me. My strong opposition to these standards of normalcy is very much a part of my gender identity as a femme, as a queer identity. I live for myself and not to be given to a man for the rest of my life. I consider myself very gender deviant in this way, and I LOVE it. It’s fascinating to me how through the years the culture there seems to have evolved very little in terms of their views of women. Very few women have careers, the majority of my cousins are stay at home wives, and have multiple children. I don’t mean to shame that lifestyle but simply to point out how DIFFERENT I felt over there, how I have to hide much of who I am. Not only am I sexually different, because I am very queer, I am also a witch! These two identities are probably one of the most hated and marginalized identities within this patriarchal view of the world. As much as I love my family I also have very complex relationships with them. While there I also had to tolerate rampant homophobia. Hearing my grandmother and cousins speak ill of lesbians and gay people tears me apart on a level I can’t explain. They don’t know their words hurt me. Alas, my tough shell took it all and smiled through it, and hell I even looked this fly. I’m thankful for my chosen family, my best friends, my community on here and for the family members who are accepting of me. Queer. Bruja. Chicana.
