✨ What book should be read by everyone at least once in their lives? My choice is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It is life changing, life affirming. It reminded me of the important things when I was falling apart. And put me on the path of Sweetgrass. There’s an audible version read by the author herself in her kind, wise voice. I put my book up too, not because I think everyone should read it, but because it was my love story to the forest. It’s not a traditional love story, but a story of the things I love, that lifted my heart when it was low. It’s a story that celebrates the forest and the trees. Braiding Sweetgrass asks us to write so many love songs and love stories to the nature that it changes the world. That’s what I do with my business too, and garden. Wishing Well soap is earthy and fresh, with notes of wet stones, emerald moss, and forest rain. I like to use this as a meditative soap, and imagine everything blocking me from my wishes washing away. The growing green of abundance filling its space. What is blocking me from my wishes? Usually me. Overthinking. Self doubt. Crummy self talk, who cares, why even try. You’ll mess it all up. They’re like weeds in a garden. Good thing I am a gardener. So I pluck them, toss them in the compost, let their lessons become rich soil. Spend a moment with your wishes, planting what you want. Remembering the kind words of others. Getting ready to notice new and interesting opportunities. Sacred Space is also meditative, cleansing. Spend a moment imagining your blocks washing away, peace and serenity filling the space. I’ve been thinking a lot about the starfish story. It begins on a beach that had been recently ravaged by a storm, and starfish were strewn across the sand from end to end. A young child was walking along the beach, picking up the stranded starfish and releasing them back into the water. An older person came up and said, “You know, you can’t help all of them.” To which the kid responded, after picking up a starfish and putting it in the water, “I made a difference to that one.” Sometimes we have no idea how we affect others. We have no idea of the power of our reach, especially in the form of art and music and stories, after they’re released into the world. And sometimes I get the most heartwarming feedback that brings me to happy tears. This business has brought me so much healing. I’ve been a shy moss a lot of my life, but when you start to share your heart and soul with the world, and the world sparkles back at you. Well. That’s something. My gratitude overflows. Sometimes the little things are the world. Remember that when something attracts your curiosity. Perhaps it will build into something beautiful and unexpected. Perhaps there’s a lesson in there. Or a new skill, that you will carry with you and use, say, when you open a successful small business, which has used a lifetime of gathered skills. I love you. I wish you the best. I am very patient for spring. If spring warms too early, the fruit tree blossoms open before the end of the spring freezes. No fruit. No good. (To be fair, I am still intensely excited for spring, it’s ok to be both) But even in winter, the earth is changing and renewal is happening. Since the harvest, we (at least should have been) resting. Meditating. Removing what we no longer want in our lives, outgrown ways of being and understanding. Nurturing the seeds of what we do want. Sorting through the seed catalog. Planning. Resting more. I’m not totally sure where the metaphor stops, if it does. Who has read Braiding Sweetgrass? Who wants to go stand by the river with me? 🐺 🕯 Wolf Pack • with notes of fir trees, orange peel, and a pinecone campfire • has a new label ✨ Also ❤️ Insomnia has been hitting me hard this week, and I had a glorious nap about it yesterday while the power was out. People need sleep. I get really wonky when I don’t have enough sleep. So I napped, and woke up feeling refreshed. While I slept, my Love wrote a list of things that he noticed that I love, things that make me happy. He read it to me when I woke up, and it squeezed sweet tears of joy from me. It was refreshing on a whole different level. He doesn't know how much I love lists of things that I love. I felt seen, and appreciated. Let's do an experiment. Go write a list of things that you notice someone you care about loves. Little things, big things, funny memory things. And read it to them. Possibly when they could use a boost. See what happens.
