A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood (2019)
Tumblr media
So I finally got around to watching Marielle Heller's film about Mr. Rogers, and I'm so glad I finally made a point to watch it.
Tom Hanks did an excellent job as always. His portrayal of Fred Rogers was masterful, down to the posture and smallest nonverbal gestures of the man so many of us grew up learning from.
The film, like Roger's Television series doesn't shy away from heavy subject matter such as death, illness, and abandonment. Likewise, the movie tries to impart values and lessons about humility and kindness that aren't just for children, but also for the adults who once too were children themselves.
it's a story of humanity, of how kindness can change the world, and ultimately of how to forgive not just those who've harmed you, but how to forgive yourself.
8.5/10 I thought it was a great movie with some small pacing issues. I could go on too long about the little details like the exterior shots all being miniatures like the Mr. Rogers neighborhood TV show.
It's a big recommendation from me! Grab some tissues and give it a watch. Your inner child will thank you.

🦖Dinosaur Ridge in Golden was a great time! It was a gorgeous day to get up high and look around. Seeing all the dinosaur bones and tracks was really cool too but I won't spoil them, pictures don't do it justice. 🦕
There's so much I want to see this summer, hopefully I can get to Acadia again soon too!

Every now and then I think about this crusty video from the 00's of Shadow the hedgehog, and the other sonic characters as real people in mascot suits breaking it down and twerking to apple bottom jeans.
I can't believe this was broadcast on television. Thank goodness for media preservation.

My Kim Wexler inspired half orc paladin. It's hilarious to me that because she's a paladin she's versed in justice and lawyers everyone she meets.

Here's some of my unstructured free writing for practice.
Vanessa sat at the small square dining table. Taking a drag off her cigarette “where are those guys already?” She asked aloud before taking a swig of beer. She was a slightly smaller framed young woman her hair was dyed blonde but her dark hair was showing from her roots. The smoke hung suspended in the stale air of the old trailer. The flimsy cheap materials made the whole home feel precarious like it could fall apart any moment.
The sound of a car door closing echoes outside. Vanessa finishes off her beer and puts out her cigarette readying herself, and adjusting her clothes. The sound of heavy footsteps grow closer from the front porch. The door is quickly forced ajar and Trevor stumbles through. “Nessa come on, already” he says somewhat irritated
He looks at her expectantly, a large framed man with a muscular build. His well kept goatee and piercing blue eyes made him seem more put together than he really was. “Hey let me get a smoke off you l, I'll get you back later.”
Vanessa takes a cigarette out of her pack and hands it to him while walking past him through the door. Wordlessly she makes her way to the car. He never has cigarettes to give back.
Standing on the front porch offers a a view of the neighborhood (rows of trailers in the park) and the wood line. Parked in the driveway was Trevors car, a beat up old car about 20+ years old. Don't let the chipped paint, dents, and the bumper held up with duct tape and glue fool you, its a real piece of shit car.
Kasey sits in the passenger seat smoking a cigarette and occasionally taking sips from the bottle of rum not so stealthily tucked between his legs on the passenger floor.
Vanessa quickly descends the small staircase onto the driveway. Trevor close behind her, struggling to light the cigarette he'd been given. Getting to the passenger door she frowns, “I thought id sit up front, but I don't think you could fit back there hu?”
Kasey smirks, it's no secret that Kasey is bigger man. His large graphic tee draped over his bulging form. Chuckling loudly he says”yeah I think you're right, hop in on the other side beautiful. We've got work to do.”
Vanessa rolls her eyes at his words and walks around, pushing the driver's side chair forward she climbs into the back seat. Trevor quickly pushes the chair back into place with a careless thud.the car lurches into motion, “it's almost time to harvest, you guys. I'm fucking giddy over here”
“Once we get all the plants dried and the hash processed we just have to wait until the music festival comes.” Kasey adds
“Then we'll have enough to do whatever we want” Vanessa chuckled.
Continuing to the end of the property they went down a long dirt road. Passing the bottle around and a few more “borrowed” cigarettes from Vanessa they soon arrived.
A small camper in a clearing out in the woods. “No trespassing” and other threatening signage like “beware of dog” were placed all around.
Opening the door revealed a comprehensive setup. Hydroponics, grow lights, and fans. “We should be ready to harvest in a few days guys” Vanessa said while inspecting a plant.
“Sick, hell yeah!” Trevor exclaimed while curiously rubbing a leaf. Smack! Vanessa swats his hand away
“Don't touch them you'll upset them”
“How the hell do you upset a dope plant?” He asked indignant.
“If you damage it, it'll go into shock and fuck up our yield”
“Alright, alright, you're so damn testy sometimes. I'll leave you to it.” He steps outside to join Kasey who's a bit too big to enter the camper.
It was a calm morning, the pine forest gave the air a sweet familiar scent. Although the thick clouds of cigarette smoke wafting from the two men combined with the smell of booze and weed left an unnoticed discordance to the scene.
“Did I ever show you this tattoo?” Trevor says with a smirk rolling up his sleeve. An anchor adorned with doves and ribbons reading “Emrit Kelly 1965-1989”
“Yeah it's for my Dad, he was fisherman he was lost at sea just after I was born. I don't really remember him ynow?”
Kasey frowns “yeah man you showed me before. That's real sad brother. I'm sure he'd be proud if he saw you now.”
A quick smile flashes over Trevors face “yeah… I bet he would be. Selling this much dope man, I got ambition. Must have got it from him” he finished, satisfied, taking a long puff and staring into the distance.
The long silence is interrupted by Vanessa, emerging from the camper.
“What's the matter with you two?” She asks teasingly although with a hint of earnest concern
Trevor straightens out, “just thinking about all the cool shit I'm going to buy when we're finished with this job. Hell don't be embarrassed if I see you blushing while I cruise by in my new hellcat”
“Well I am only human Trev” Vanessa quipped dryly, getting herself back into the backseat of the car. “We're done here guys. we should be ready to harvest in a day or two”
The big music festival was coming to town the next weekend. Everyone knew that “out of towners” would be coming too, with fat wallets and a naivete seldom found on the island. Or in other words, easy marks.
Vanessa and the boys weren't the only ones scheming. Throughout the trailer park and the rest of Harbor View you could find artists and craftsmen creating trinkets and baubles to hock. Little ceramic lobsters and miniature wooden buoys. Kitch and crap for the tourists to buy up.
