“If you want to do Pride at your high school, you should be able to do it.” 🏳️‍🌈
Audy Mcdonald & Jessie Funes McDonald, a couple in Santa Maria, California, have made it a point to be out and visible in their community for kids who don’t often see themselves represented.
The couple brought the first Pride parade to their town and established HOPE (House of Pride and Equality) where they mentor individuals like Fernando (featured in the video.)
Their mentorship allowed Fernando to come out to his friends and family and he went on to organize his high school’s first Pride week!
Thank you, Audy and Jessie!

My dear lgbt+ kids,
Different activities require different levels of emotional energy.
Correcting someone who misgenders you on tumblr might be level 0. You are ready to do that even when you’re sad or tired. Correcting your mom at home may be level 4. In most cases you’ll do it but when you’re feeling unwell it’s too much and you’ll stay silent. Correcting a stranger in public might be level 10. You can only do that when you’re feeling confident and strong that day.
Correcting someone is only one example. This applies to replying to trans/homophobic comments, explaining your identity etc. It can even apply to fun social activitites, like video-calling a friend!
That’s perfectly normal. Don’t beat yourself up for not being able to do a level 4 thing on a level 1 day.
Emotional energy is not an infinite resource, we all need to rest and recharge sometimes - and part of that can be simply not doing things you would do on other days. That doesn’t make you unreliable or means you don’t care about those things. It just makes you human.
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad
