The repetitive sound of water droplets

As they fall from the dampness above.

Always

tap, tap, tap.

Now accustomed to the darkness of the cool, slick fabric wrapped around my head

I grow familiar with the surrounding noises.

Every tap, tap, tap

Every footstep, every creak.

All of which are etched into my mind’s eye

As i desperately try

To stay alive.

I know it’s you

As soon as i feel the vibrations of heavy

footsteps. They shake the ceiling

Causing dust to fall like snowflakes,

Settling themselves around the room.

Old stairs shriek and whine beneath the

Weight of your steel-toe-caps, and i

Yearn for their ability to cry out.

I swallow.

You do this often;

Sit and watch in silence. Silence except for the odd

My hair is matted and tangled,

my skin covered in dust and dirt and

bruises, so mean.

I’m but a heap on the floor -Restrained and vulnerable and hidden from the world,

yet somehow i feel
