I'm Not Him (And Never Will Be) (My Babysitter's A Vampire Benny Weir X Fem! OC)

Third Person POV
Athena has been with Benny for four months, and yet all they did to this day was hold hands, share kisses, and cuddle. Now, Benny wasn't a pushy guy. She didn't want to get intimate or whatever, that was fine! He wasn't needy like that. He didn't want to make her uncomfortable, so he went at her pace. It's just...sometimes, he was confused. She seemed so fine one second, and then someone would snap, or yell or say something, and she'd go all tense and quiet, and he would wonder, not for the first time, if she was possibly hiding some dark secret. He wanted her to trust him. And she did, but...not with whatever was hurting her. He understood, but...it hurt.
Lately, he's been asking the vampires about Athena. Had they noticed anything different? Was she acting weird, or was it just him? "Don't push her," Jesse told Benny one day at lunch as Athena stood in line with Ethan and Sarah. "She'll tell you when she's ready. One of my biggest mistakes was pushing Sarah." He added. "That's why I lost her." "Oh. Okay." Benny said as the other three approached.
He spent the next few days sort of...analyzing Athena. If someone yelled, he watched her body language. He didn't mean to treat her like a science experiment, she was just worrying him.
One day, two jocks got in a fight. They were arguing pretty loudly when Jesse, Erica, Benny, and Athena left Math, right there in the hall, and were throwing insults back and forth. Now, usually, nobody would bother, but everyone in the hall felt that it would get violent in under ten seconds, so a girl ran to get the staff, and the taller one suddenly shoved the shorter one into the locker, and he tripped into the metal, slamming into Athena, knocking her to the ground with a slam that echoed painfully in Benny's ears.
At that point, Jesse snarled, shoving the two struggling humans apart as Athena scrambled to her feet and bolted, shoving past the crowd and nearly knocking another girl into the lockers. Benny, though he wanted to go after her, knew he had to let her breathe, and started helping Jesse separate the jocks, still shouting at one another, until teachers swarmed the hallway, pulling them apart. "Where's Athena?" Sarah gasped, eyes wide. "This way!" Erica called, running down the hall at human speed. The others shared glances and followed her into the closest closet.
She was in the corner, knees to her face, crying. "Athena!" Benny pushed past a startled Erica. No one had seen her cry, not like this. "Hey, hey, what--" He flinched as her hands flew up, pushing at him, and she whimpered, "Don't--don't touch me."
"Hey, it's me!" Benny blinked, hurt. She glanced up, and Benny's heart twisted. Her eyes were red and puffy, and she had claw marks on her cheeks, flushed pink, from her nails. "What happened?" Sarah asked. Jesse grabbed Sarah's arm. "Let's give them a minute, okay?" He asked, eyes checking Athena over. As the girls left the closet, he asked, "You okay, Thena?" She nodded. "Thank you," She whispered. Jesse smiled softly and told Benny, "We'll be right outside." He left, shutting the door carefully so it didn't slam.
"I'm sorry." Athena whispered, rubbing her sweaty hands on her jeans. "It's okay. What...what happened, why'd you freak so bad?" He asked. "Does it scare you when that happens?" He wondered. "Sort of?" She hedged. At his curious look, she sighed. "I had an ex. Remember me telling you about Jay?" She wondered, and he nodded. "Yeah, you said you broke up with him because it didn't work out." He recalled. "It didn't, because...he used to hurt me. He would...hit me a lot, and he'd call me names. He was really abusive and controlling, and now, because of him, if something happens--a fight too close, too much yelling, something resembling anger--I freak and have a panic attack." She said softly. Benny's eyes widened. "What?" He asked in a voice that made Athena wish she'd never opened her mouth. "Who...who'd hurt you, you're an awesome person!" He nearly yelled. She flinched. "I'm sorry, please..." She whispered.
"No, no, no, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." He whispered, reaching forwards, and stopped. "Can I hug you?" "Of course!" She said, wrapping her arms around Benny. She sunk into his arms. For every time she remembered Jay's harsh words or fists, Benny was there to chase it all away.
Outside the closet, Erica's eyes watered. "I never knew." She whispered, leaning against the wall. Sarah blinked, and a tear traced her cheek. "I don't think any of us did." She whispered, eyes flicking to Jesse's. The older vampire was glaring down the hall. "I'm gonna kill him." "No." The voice said, and the door opened. "Please, don't." Athena whispered, rubbing her still-pink cheeks dry of tears. "He hurt you, so let me kill him." Erica promised. "Guys, no. Just...stay with me. I need you guys here with me." Athena whispered, eyes watering again. "Okay. We can stay." Jesse sighed. Athena smiled. "Thank you." She turned to Benny, hiding her face in his striped hoodie. For a moment, Benny looked a little scary. His face was cold and flat, and his eyes were almost black. "You, uh...look a little...different," Sarah hedged. He glanced at her. "I...I'm taking her home." He grabbed Athena's hand and led her down the hall. Once they were gone, Sarah smiled. "I know where he lives." Erica and Jesse looked at her. "We're going hunting. Tonight." She snarled, stalking down the hall. Erica grinned, and Jesse laughed.

Silly Doodles (Jesse MBAV X Fem! Reader)
Tumblr media
The Drawing:
Tumblr media
Prompt: Female Reader doodles a drawing of Jesse in her book, giggling to herself.
Added Prompt: Jesse finds her and thinks she's too cute for her own good. Featuring: Cute Jesse; Fluffy Jesse and Fem! Reader; Cute; Domestic Dorks.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Third Person POV
Y/N giggled, sketching quietly, earbuds playing music that Jesse could hear from across the room (enhanced vampire hearing sometimes has perks). He glanced up as she laughed again, frowning. What the hell is she laughing at? He wondered. She was biting her lip, eyes locked on her sketchbook. He wondered what was making her smile like that.
Y/N tilted her head. She was drawing Jesse (A/N: the picture at the top), but she couldn't get his eyes right. "Damn it." She growled, scrubbing hard with the eraser. "What's wrong?" Jesse asked, and she grumbled something he couldn't quite hear. "What?" He asked. "I can't get your eyes right," She blushed. Jesse grinned, "Are you drawing me? I feel so honored," He teased, hand to his chest. Y/N glared at him playfully. "Yeah, well...you're pretty." She blushed a darker red. Jesse laughed, coming up behind her, smiling at the drawing. "That's amazing. I love it." He kissed her temple, and she smield shyly. "Good." She frowned, focused on his eyes. When she was done, she added a loopy signature, the date, and handed it to him. He smiled. "I'll keep it forever." "Considering that's how long you'll live, I expect so." She giggled. He kissed her. "I love you, babe." "I love you, too," She kissed him gently.

Hypothermia (My Babysitter's A Vampire)
Tumblr media
Platonic! Jane Morgan X Platonic! Benny Weir; Platonic! Jane Morgan X Platonic/Acquaintance Jesse Black.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Summary: Ethan, benny, Jane, Sarah, Rory, Erica, and Jesse are at Lake Ontario, having fun, when Jane falls through the ice. Jesse rescues her, and from that point on, he seems to have redeemed himself to Ethan adn the gang for saving Jane's life, and Jane is a little closer than she used to be.
Strictly all platonic.
Third Person
It was winter in Whitechapel and Ethan, Jane, and Benny were at Lake Ontario with Sarah and the undead gang, having a field day (though Jesse was dragged there by Erica, because Erica forced Jesse to "be sociable" for once). Benny and Ethan were trying to build a snowman, Jane and Rory were having a furious snowball fight (though Rory was careful not to use his vampire strength), and Sarah, Erica, and Jesse were in Benny's grandma's 1960 VW bus. Benny was surprised his grandma even had one, but his grandma claimed that she "did used to be a hippy." Whatever, Benny thinks. It was warm, and it worked in the snow thanks to Grandma, and so it worked.
"I'm going on the ice!" Jane yelled. "Wait, no!" Ethan yelled, dropping his big snowball. "It might be thin! Jane!" He yelled as she ignored him, strapping her ice skates on and sliding out. "Let her have fun," Jesse remarked, sighing. "She's only a kid once, you know." "The ice--" "Is fine," Sarah said firmly, putting her gloves on. "Now let me help you guys, please. I can't sit here with Erica and Kid Darkness anymore." Jesse gave her an offended look as she stood. "I am not--" "Yes, you are." Erica said, patting his arm. "But that's okay."
"What--" Meanwhile, Jane was struggling. She'd never been ice skating before and finally convinced her mother to buy her skates this Christmas, and now she could use them! She giggled, then squealed as she fell over. "Dang it," She muttered, slipping and sliding to her feet. "Jane!" Rory yelled. "You wanna know what I learned?" "Not to be an idiot?" Erica mumbled. Ignoring her, Rory yelled, "Think of it as roller-skating, right? One foot in front of the other." Jane frowned, slowly placing one foot in front of the other, then moving the next, back and forth, and smiled. "Cool!" She yelled, then promptly slipped and fell on her butt. "Well, she tried." Benny said as he packed in the middle of the snowman. "At least she's having fun," Erica snapped.
Jane heard something snap. She looked up from examining her bruised knee, frowning. "What was that?" She called, but now she was too far from the shore for her human brothers to hear her, and the vampires weren't paying attention. When she stood again, trying not to let her feet slip from under her, she heard the crack again, sort of like tiny, tiny firecrackers. Wait, no! It might be thin! Her brother's voice echoed in her head. She stood completely still, heart pounding, breath heavy. Was the ice cracking? "Ethan." She called, voice shaking. Crack. Snap. Craackk, snap!
"Ethan!" Jane shouted, voice wobbly. "The ice!" She shouted just as the ice gave a horrible, loud SNAP and exploded. Her scream echoed across the lake as her body was submerged.
Jesse was the first one on his feet, slipping and sliding across the ice as Benny ran to the van, cranking the heater and Rory and Ethan digging for blankets. Erica raced after Jesse, who was already by the hole in the ice and sliding in the water.
He didn't need to breathe, but when he touched the freezing water, he almost inhaled in shock at the cold. He forced himself to remain breathless, seeing Jane a few feet away, slamming at the bottom of the ice, eyes wide. He swam to her quickly, grabbing her around the waist and using his vampire strength to bust a new hole in the ice. Erica grasped Jane's arms, pulling her up, and Sarah grabbed Jesse, who was barely shaking compared to Jane. She was shaking, teeth chattering, and her teeth slammed into her lip, making it bleed. Jesse flinched at the smell, but forced himself to pick Jane up, speeding to the van.
"Under here!" Benny shouted, peeling back a nest of blankets. Jesse slid Jane under the blankets, and Erica and Sarah forced the boys from the van so they could get Jane in something warm. As they waited, the human boys shivering, Ethan was mumbling, "Mom's gonna kill me, your grandma's gonna kill me, is she okay?" "She's fine." Jesse grunted. "We got her warm before she had a chance to freeze." He glared at Ethan's skeptical look. "You think just because I'm a vampire that I wasn't human once or something?" "N-no." Ethan mumbled as the van door slid open. "We're good, let's go back." Erica said, and the boys clambered in.
On the way home, Jane was shivering really bad. Now, vampires don't really give off heat, but Jane went red (or, more redder than she was) and slightly scooted over, pressing her arm to Jesse's. He blinked, surprised, as her eyes fluttered, and her head dropped onto his shoulder. "Um, should she sleep?" Benny asked from the front. "No. Hey." Jesse nudged her with his shoulder, and she blinked, eyes hazy. "What?" She asked. "Don't fall asleep." Sarah called from the driver's seat. "I'm tired," Jane whined. "I know, but it won't be good." Erica tucked the blanket back around her shivering body, and Jane hummed, curling into Jesse's coat. He blinked, and one of his arms went over her shoulder. "Warm," She muttered, and he sighed, "Yeah, I've been told that." His eyes caught Sarah's, and she coughed, "We're here. Jesse--" "Got it."
"What happened?" Samantha Morgan asked worriedly, sitting on the couch with Ross, as the group came in, Jesse carrying Jane. "Jane fell through the ice, but Jesse pulled her out," Ethan reassured his parents as Erica and Rory led Jesse to Jane's room. Jesse tucked Jane into her bed, and Erica said, "I can stay with her." "Okay."
*Time Skip*
Jane must've fallen asleep, because she woke up in her room, alone. She frowned. "Ethan?" She called. Nothing. "Ethannn!" She yelled even louder. Still nothing. She sighed, swinging her legs off the bed. She groaned as her head spun, legs tingling, but forced herself to get up, moving to her door. She opened it, looking down the hall. Nothing. She stepped to the stairs, descending slowly, and saw Jesse, asleep, on the sofa, head leaned back into the cushions, a random sitcom playing on the TV.
She turned to the hall, grabbing a blanket. She knew vampires didn't really feel cold or hot, but she figured he'd appreciate the gesture. She crept to the sofa, carefully trying to put the blanket on Jesse without waking him up, but then he groaned, eyes fluttering open, and she froze, blanket in her fists. "Um. Hi." She said carefully, eyes wide. He blinked, dark eyes taking in the blanket. "I don't really get cold," He said, voice raspy. "I know. But..." She hesitated, lowering her hands. "You helped me earlier. Like, saved my life. And, obviously, you're not in danger, but I figured I'd do something nice, and now I realize it was dumb--" She ranted. "Jane, breathe. This is very sweet, thank you." He smiled, taking the blanket, then scooted over, eyebrows raised. "Wanna watch TV?" "Sure." She sat on the sofa, and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, sighing. "Thank you. I don't know if I ever said that earlier." Jane whispered. "No, you didn't. But you're welcome." He grinned. When they came back from the store, Ethan, Rory, Benny, Erica, and Sarah smiled softly, seeing Jane curled up to Jesse on the sofa, both asleep. "Softie," Benny snarked, giggling. "Oh, leave them alone." Sarah rolled her eyes. "And let's go make dinner, okay?" "Sure." Ethan said. He was glad Jane found a friend, even if it was their old enemy.

Not Alone For The Holidays (My Babysitter's A Vampire - Drabble)

GN! Reader: “You don’t have to do all this just for me…”
The Group: “Nonsense! This is the first [insert holiday/celebration/event] since we met you, of course we’re pulling out all the stops.”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Third Person POV
Y/N was used to spending Christmas alone, with no one to celebrate with. It had always been a time of loneliness and isolation for them, but this year was different. Their best friends, Ethan, Sarah, Rory, Erica, Jesse, Benny, and even Ethan's little sister Jane, weren't having it.
They all decided to invite Y/N over for Christmas, determined to start a new tradition and make them feel loved and included. Y/N was hesitant at first, unsure of how to accept such a kind gesture, but the warmth and sincerity in their friends' eyes convinced them to say yes.
On Christmas Eve, Y/N arrived at Ethan's house, where the group had all gathered. The atmosphere was full of laughter and joy, and Y/N couldn't help but feel a sense of belonging for the first time in a long time. They exchanged gifts, shared stories, and enjoyed a delicious meal together.
As the night went on, they all gathered around the fireplace, drinking hot cocoa and singing Christmas carols. It was a moment of pure bliss, and Y/N couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude for having such amazing friends. They spent the day exchanging more gifts and playing games, creating memories that Y/N would cherish forever.
As the day came to an end, Y/N felt a sense of contentment and happiness that they hadn't felt in a long time. They realized that they didn't have to be alone during the holidays, as long as they had friends like Ethan, Sarah, Rory, Erica, Jesse, Benny, and Jane by their side.
From that day on, Y/N and their friends made it a tradition to celebrate Christmas together, creating their own little family and filling each other's hearts with love and joy. And Y/N knew that they would never have to spend a holiday alone again, as long as they had their friends by their side.

Don't Be A Drag (Just Be A Queen) (My Babysitter's A Vampire)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Damien, Jesse's nephew from this generation, is gay, trans, and a drag queen. Of course, he's only known his (scary) uncle for a few weeks, so Jesse has no idea that Damien is on the LGBT spectrum until Damien comes home crying from bullying one day. When asked what happened, Damien explains, and a conversation ensues where Jesse really tries to understand his nephew more and Damien realizes his uncle isn't the bad guy Damien thought he was.
EDIT: I'm thinking of making some LGBT-themed one shots for MBAV!!
Third Person POV
Damien was Jesse's great-great nephew. He hasn't been around Jesse long enough to know him, so he was still a little shy around Jesse. Honestly, he thought Jesse was a little scary. After the Lucifractor incident, Damien had shown up on Ethan's doorstep, asking for help finding Jesse, and when he was asked why, he said, "My mother sent me. My ancestor was Esther Black." Jesse couldn't believe that Esther had kids. From what he remembered, she'd run from home, not even close to pregnant, a few years before she'd been killed. Apparently, in that time, she'd had a son named Stephen, who'd then fathered a girl named Sofia, who was Damien's mother, having died only three weeks ago. One of her dying requests was that Damien find Jesse.
Jesse was not used to having children (other than Ethan and Benny and Jane) around him. Not that Damien was necessarily a child, but he was human, younger (way younger) than Jesse, so he made the rules. Damien was a child. He kept his distance at first, but Sarah made him see that he couldn't exactly get to know Damien from a distance, so Jesse threw in his lot and made Damien move in with him to avoid further issues. Naturally, they both avoided each other in the mansion or were supremely awkward around each other.
One day, that changed.
Damien came home one day in tears. He pushed through the front door, nearly slamming it. Jesse, on the couch, jumped as Damien stalked past, eyes burning. "Hey, what's--" He began, but Damien stormed past, ignoring him, and slammed himself in his room. For a moment, Jesse was quiet, a little stunned. Then he got up, heading to Damien's door and knocking softly. "Damien?" He asked. "Go away," Damien's voice called. "What's wrong?" Jesse asked, leaning against the door. "Nothing. You wouldn't understand." "Try me." Silence, then.... "Come in."
Jesse walked in, frowning when Damien didn't even look at him. "What's wrong?" He asked, sitting by his hips on the bed. "I don't think you'll understand." Damien said, and Jesse frowned, "Seriously, try me." "Okay." Damien sat up, face red. "I'm gay. And a drag queen." Jesse blinked. "Right, well, um....the gay part I understand, but not the other thing. What's a drag queen?" "Oh, God." Damien blushed, hiding his face. "Okay, so..." He pulled his tablet closer to him, typing in Google. "This. This is Valentina." He said. "She's a drag queen. Like,  a guy who dresses as a woman and acts female for public entertainment." He read off of Google. "And they're usually always gay, like me." Jesse blinked. "So...you wanna be a girl?" "No!" Damien groaned. "I just...wear stuff like Valentina." He nodded at the photo. "Oh," Jesse said. "I mean. Okay?" He asked. Damien stared at him. "Really?" "Are...you waiting for me to yell or something?" Jesse asked. "No, but...that's not weird?" "No, why would it be?" Jesse wondered. "I'm a boy. Wanting to wear...this. And makeup!" Damien nearly shrieked. "I've never judged you before, I don't know why I would now." Jesse rolled his eyes. "Is that what this is about? Did someone say something to you?" Jesse asked quickly. "They said I was--" "That doesn't matter. You wanna be a drag queen, or whatever it's called? Be one." Jesse stated firmly. Damien's eyes watered. "Really?" "Really." Damien smiled, hugging Jesse. "Thank you." Jesse felt that if he had a heart, it would be aching for the boy. "Of course, kid." He whispered, hugging him back.

Legends Never Die (My Babysitter's A Vampire) (Season 2 Finale)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Third Person POV
"This is the end, isn't it?!" Benny shrieked as they ran down the Council halls. "Not yet, get in!" Jesse shoved Benny, Ethan, and Sarah towards a black door. He yanked it open, and they clattered down stone steps and into a basement. "Here." Jesse hit a switch on the wall, and a whole section of the wall separated, sliding with a grinding noise. "In. Now, we don't have time!" Sarah yelled as a purple glow started leaking from the nave of the church. The group fled in the hole in the wall, and the stone slammed shut, encasing them in darkness. "Ow, that was my foot, jerk!" Ethan snapped as Benny stumbled. "Sorry, sorry! I can't see, it's not my fault." His best friend snapped back. "Oh, my God." There was a flick, and Jesse held up a lighter. "Come on." He turned, leading them down a dark hall. Sarah grabbed Ethan's hand and Ethan grabbed Benny's wrist, making a chain down the hall.
They felt it when it happened. There was a loud BOOM, and the walls shook. Sarah gasped, stumbling, and Jesse quickly caught her as Benny and Ethan stumbled into each other. "Thanks," Sarah muttered, stepping back, and Jesse, looking oddly shy, nodded. For a moment, there was silence. Then, Sarah jumped as Ethan's phone rang. He scrambled for it, flipping it open. "Hello?" He asked quickly.
"Where are you?" Jane's voice echoed. "Grandma's awake, and she's worried! There was an earthquake, I want you home." She said this like she didn't really want to admit it. "Um...okay, I'll be there soon." Ethan mumbled, hanging up. "Is there anything still out there?" He asked. Sarah stepped past Benny, back to the place where the wall opened. "Wait--" Jesse began.
She threw the switch.
The wall opened, and...nothing happened. She took a deep breath, stepping out. For a moment, she sparked, like there were tiny diamonds on her skin, and then it was gone. "Sarah?" Ethan asked when she stood there, back to them, silent. She turned and hissed, eyes turning gold-green, making Ethan and Benny flinch. "Still normal," Sarah laughed. Jesse stepped out next. He shrugged. "She's right, I don't feel different." He said.
*Time Skip*
Ethan rushed into the house, Benny and Sarah following. "Oh. Right," Ethan said as Jesse paused. "Um. Come in, I guess." He said, and Jesse stepped over the threshold. "Horace Black," A voice said, and Grandma Weir stepped from the kitchen, eyes curious. "It's been a while since I've seen a living Black." "I--how do you know his real name?" Benny squeaked. "I'm an Earth Priestess, I know things. Now." She turned to Sarah, handing her a bottle of synthetic blood, and offered one to a stunned Jesse. "Thanks," He said, and as the two vampires ate, Ethan explained everything that went down.
"Yes, the Lucifractor failed. I could feel it, so you should still be the same." Grandma said, gesturing to Jane. "We've put protection spells on the house, but for now, I think we're safe." She said, and turned to Benny. "I'm going home. Are you staying here?" She asked. Benny looked at Ethan, his eyes dark with something Ethan couldn't identify. "Yeah. I have to." He said. Grandma nodded, kissed his forehead, and left. "Why do you have to?" Sarah asked. Benny shrugged. "It'll be...less lonely." He muttered. That...that made sense. They had thought they were going to die, and now...
"Maybe we should all stay," Sarah said. "Uh..." Jesse trailed off. "Oh, shut up and get comfy," Ethan snapped, moving to a closet. "We're staying." "You're holding me hostage now?" Jesse chuckled. "If I have to, yes." Ethan shoved blankets at Sarah and Jesse. "Like I said, get comfy. I'll...get some movies or something." "I'll get food!" Benny ran to the kitchen, Jane rushing after him.
Ethan dug in the movies in his room, frowning. He couldn't stop thinking. What if they'd really died? What if they hadn't made it? He shook his head, pulling a thick stack of DVDs out of his closet. He turned, jumping when he saw Sarah in the doorway. "Hey," She said softly, taking some of the movies. He smiled, thanking her. "What's wrong?" She asked as they reached the stairs. "I'm just thinking," He told her.
She frowned, stopping mid-stair. "About what?" She wondered. "What...what if we hadn't made it?" Ethan expressed his fear. She smiled, a soft, careful smile. "But we did. You wanna know something?" She asked. "What?" He asked as they reached the living room. Sarah looked around. Benny was laughing at something, and Jane aws talking quietly to Jesse, who was, for the most part, seeimingly enjoying Jane's inquiries about himself.
"We made it." She said firmly. "It's a fact: legends never die," She teased, rushing into the living room with a cry of, "We got movies!" "Yes!" Benny and Jane shouted, swarming her. Ethan smiled.
Legends never die.

Jay: How did you even get in here? Adam: Kevin's window! Or, as I like to call it, "Adam's door"! Kevin: I’m closing the window.

Joe Cruz x disabled!reader (she's in a wheelchair)
Summary: During a fire in your apartment complex, Joe Cruz rescues you and maybe (maybe), you're slightly crushing on him.
Wordcount: 1.7k
Warnings: Mention of a fire.
A/N: Currently on season 8 of Chicago Fire and I just have to say: i love Joe Cruz.
‘Fire department, call out!’
As I’m going in and out of consciousness, I first think it’s a hallucination. There is actually someone here who came in to find me? To rescue me?
‘Fire department, call out!’
‘In here,’ I weakly exclaim. I’m on the ground, my head pounding from the fall I took. I am confined to my wheelchair after a horrid accident last year. While I finally got used to it, I hadn’t really prepared myself for a fire. As the smoke got thicker the higher I was seated, I realized that it would be better if I was on the ground, so with all the consequences there, I threw myself on the floor.
Sure, I’ve got better and cleaner oxygen now, but I’m kinda stuck.
The door opens and instead of me being able to cry out for help, all I can muster up is a hopeless little cough.
‘Lieutenant, I found someone!’ a man in his fire fighter uniform yells and he crouches down next to me. ‘Ma’am are you alright?’
All I an answer is a cough.
‘Come on, let’s get you out of here.’
He hasn’t realized yet I am unable to walk, because he hoists me up, expecting me to find my stance, but my legs give out. ‘I can’t walk,’ I manage to say. ‘I need a wheelchair.’
It takes him approximately a second or two before he lifts me up in his arms. ‘I got you, miss,’ he says.
I wrap my arms around his neck, as he escorts me out of the burning building. He shields me from the fires and carries me all the way to the ambulance. He places me on the stretcher and tells the paramedics about how I am unable to walk.
‘Alright,’ the blonde paramedic says. ‘What’s your name, honey?’
‘I’m Y/N,’ I answer.
‘I’m Sylvie and I’ll take good care of you. I’m going to put you on some oxygen, okay?’
I gratefully allow her to place the mask over my mouth and nose and take a deep breath. The firefighter places his hand on the backrest of the stretcher and says: ‘These ladies will take good care of you, okay?’
I nod. ‘Thank you,’ I whisper, taking off the mask briefly.
‘Not a problem.’
‘Wait,’ I say, ‘what’s your name?’
He smiles, a gorgeous and beautiful smile appearing on his face. ‘Joe Cruz, firehouse 61.’
‘Thank you for saving my life, Joe Cruz of firehouse 61. I appreciate it.’

After I finally arranged a new wheelchair for myself, I roll my way towards firehouse 61. Once I made my way inside, I could already see Joe Cruz sitting at a table with some of his colleagues. ‘Excuse me,’ I say, causing all of them to look up. No one appears to recognize me, but when I see Joe’s eyes light up, I’m glad he actually recognizes me.
‘Hi,’ he says. As he makes his way up to me, he drags his chair with him. He sits close to me, so he wouldn’t tower over me and goodness, was that small thing making my heart go in overdrive. It’s sweet and darling of him to do something so innocently cute.
I was well aware of this rescue crush thing, but something inside of me suspected this was something different. But maybe that was just me being hopeful.
‘How are you?’
I shrug. ‘Well, I am not allowed to go back inside my place yet,’ I say. ‘Mainly because of the wheelchair. They say it’s too heavy or something?’
Joe sighs. ‘Shit, I’m sorry. Is there anything you need to get from there? Maybe I can arrange something.’
‘Just something that reminds me of me. I am now staying at my parents’ house,’ I explain. ‘But I’m dressed like my mother now. I’m not the pastel colored cardigan over a floral dress kinda woman.’ I lean back in the wheelchair. ‘I feel like her, instead of myself, if that makes sense.’
‘I get it,’ Joe says. He looks over his shoulder and says: ‘Lieutenant, can we take a trip?’
The blue eyed lieutenant nods. ‘Sure thing, Cruz. Where to?’
‘The apartment fire of last shift,’ Joe says. ‘I need to do a few things there.’
‘You heard him,’ the lieutenant says to the others. ‘You can ride in front, miss. The lieutenant’s spot. Cruz, you drive.’
‘Really?’ I ask. ‘I mean, if it’s not too much trouble.’
‘It isn’t,’ the lieutenant says. Joe lifts me up and carries me into the so called lieutenant’s seat. The other’s get in the back, while Joe sits next to me behind the wheel.
‘You really don’t have to do this,’ I say. ‘I mean, you’re working.’
‘It’s all okay,’ Joe says. ‘Really.’

Cruz goes back inside what used to be my apartment complex, while the lieutenant, who listens to the name of Kelly Severide, explains to me how parts of the fundaments in my building are too weak and unstable to handle the weight and width of the wheelchair, especially since my floor was hit by the fires.
His phone rings and after picking up, he hands it to me.
I’m met with Joe’s face. ‘Hello,’ he says. ‘I’m in your apartment. What can I get for you?’
‘Some pairs of jeans and a few shirts and sweaters. Maybe also some sneakers. I have a large Levi’s tote bag. You can put everything in there. Oh, maybe also my phone charger and laptop. My skincare products. Oh, also my mixer if that one is still usable.’
He frowns.
‘Okay, Capp, Tony, maybe join Cruz upstairs,’ lieutenant Severide says. As the other two make their way upstairs as well, the lieutenant says to me: ‘That’s the beauty about being lieutenant. You can just lean back and relax whenever you want.’
‘I heard that, Severide,’ Joe says and I let out a little chuckle.

Squad 3 turned on its sirens and brought me back home. Joe carries me out of the truck and places me in my wheelchair again. ‘Thank you, Joe. For today, for my stuff, for everything. It truly means a lot.’
He hangs the bag on the handle of my wheelchair. ‘Of course,’ he says. ‘You know Molly’s?’
‘The bar? I’ve heard of it, yes.’
‘Swing by tomorrow night,’ he offers. ‘If of course you have time.’
‘I’d love to.’
‘Call me when you’re close, so I can help you inside, okay?’
‘Okay, Joe Cruz. Thank you so much for today. I truly owe you a lot.’
He shakes his head. ‘No, it’s all okay.’ He gets back in the Squad truck again and honks and flashes the lights as he drives off. My mother walks over to my wheelchair.
‘Who’s that?’
‘That is Joe Cruz,’ I say, ‘the man who saved me from the fire.’
‘He’s cute.’
While I roll my eyes, I have to admit: he really is cute.

That night my parents dropped me off in front of Molly’s and like I promised, I called Joe on the way over, only to see him already waiting outside. Once I’m secured in my wheelchair and my parents drove off, my eye lands on something.
‘Joe, did you build a ramp?’ I ask.
He smiles brightly. ‘I did. Together with the guys from Squad.’
‘Why?’
‘Because…’ He shrugs, scratching himself in the back of his neck. ‘Well, I figured this place should be more wheelchair accessible. We have a lot of firefighters, police officers and doctors coming here. Maybe some of these people are in a wheelchair, but never come here because of the stairs.’ He looks so innocently darling as he clears his throat and is visibly a little awkward. ‘Come on, let’s try it out, okay?’
I nod and he pushes me up the ramp and I can say with certainty; it works perfectly.
‘You sure it’s not too steep?’
I shake my head. ‘No, it’s perfect, Joe. Thank you.’
Once we’re in Molly’s and after I’m greeted by the rest of the Squad, the battalion chief of firehouse 51, Wallace Boden, the paramedics and some of the Truck and Engine guys and girls, Joe and I are secluded in a corner, both with a drink in our hands.
I wonder when he’s going to ask about it, because judging from the look in his eyes, he really wants to know. Almost on cue, he asks: ‘How did it happen? If you don’t mind me asking.’
I purse my lips together. ‘I got in a car accident,’ I say, ‘and that caused a spinal injury, which led to me being paralyzed from the waist down.’
‘I’m sorry,’ he says, placing his hand on mine.
‘Well, had I been rescued minutes later, I wouldn’t even be here. I’m just glad and happy to be alive.’
He nods. ‘Me too.’
The night goes by so fast, I absolutely hate to see time fly by, but it’s been quite a while since I went to a bar like this and judging from my fatigue, I’m painfully out of practice. Joe however doesn’t seem to mind, because he drives me home, as we get to know one another even better.
The thing with Joe Cruz is: he makes helping me seem so effortless. Lifting me up, clearing the way for me. It’s all so natural with him,
The two of us are in front of my place, both postponing the moment of actually saying goodbye. ‘Thank you for taking me home, Joe,’ I say, ‘I truly appreciate it.’
‘Not a problem.’ He tilts his head. ‘You’re really tired, aren’t you?’
‘I’m doing my best to hide it, but it’s just impossible.’
He chuckles. ‘I appreciate the effort.’ He’s crouched down next to my wheelchair, his face so close to mine. His fingers push a strand of hair behind my ear. ‘I’ll call you tomorrow, if that’s alright with you.’
I smile. ‘I’d love that, Joe.’
It appears he’s contemplating whether or not to do it, but he bridges the gap between us, pressing a gentle kiss on my cheek. I turn my head, so the next one lands on my lips. It had been a long time since I last kissed, because the wheelchair freaks people out and dates have been non existent ever since my accident.
But not with Joe Cruz, because with him I feel like I got a bit of myself back, in the midst of losing my apartment and therefore a little bit of myself.
Finally.
