My Thoughts on SPLIT | Origin of A Super-villain SPOILERS ABOVE FOR THE PSEUDO ENDING OF SPLIT. It’s more like a post credit scene but still🤷🏾‍♂️. Anyways, this films works for me on many levels. It’s a suspenseful drama but it’s also a very complex look at the mind and under this disguise we have a film that is indeed an origin of a super villain. And that’s just rad. @jamesmcavoyrealdeal KILLS it in this film playing the many different identities that make up the mind of Kevin. He plays them with such authenticity and commitment and I love that. One of the sadder moments in the film is when the true Kevin reveals himself after having been taken over by the 24 other identities asking to be shot in the head before slipping under again. It helps the audience understand he’s just a human, undergoing something not under his control. “The Horde” is a really neat concept, and leaves you with enough mystery to ponder the source. It’s also great super villain name💯 The beauty of this all is how it so nicely ties in side by side with Unbreakable. The train that crashed in that film that was seen in Split, which left David Dunn as the only survivor and killed Kevin’s dad, both have their roots in the man known as Mr. Glass. Who created the whole incident and essentially made both the “soldier” villain and the hero. Pretty neat right? The dope thing about it all is that the last line said in both films is that of Mr. Glass, and the ending of the trilogy is under the film name GLASS. That’s not only poetic but it’s good filmmaking. That ending...💯 Overall, I really dug Split and how it dug into the origin of a super villain. On the surface you wouldn’t realize that, let alone that it’s a comic book film in disguise. A year ago today Spider-Man: Homecoming was released in theaters. I saw it again on the 8th, and spent much of time prior to the release immersing myself once again in all things Spider-Man. Even reviewing all the films and making a video essay about my love for the characrer. But none of this would’ve been possible without a guy by the name of Steve Ditko, who recently passed away at the age of 90. Steve not only designed the costume, co created the character with Stan Lee, introduced web shooters, and illustrated the series, he created so many more iconic mainstays that have become apart of pop culture. Like Hulk’s transformation, Iron Man’s suit, Doctor Strange(and the unique art style), and so much more. Even more than all of this, he changed so many lives. Mine included as Spider-Man is to this date my favorite superhero and the character of which I spent the most time with as a kid. The only superhero my little cousin actually recognizes on spot, because of his vision. A character who I’ve always seen as a relatable individual I and so many others could see ourselves in, believing that we could be so much more than just a geek but indeed the amazing fantasy of being something more, something great. It’s honestly crazy that many people will never know this man’s name, yet his impact has somehow transformed so many of us in such profound ways. The Geekly Purchase: Cosmic Ray’s Took a stop by Cosmic Ray’s comic book store today and it was truly amazing. I honestly got lost just looking at all the amazing things inside. So many good reads, variant comics, great deals, and so much more. It’s quite honestly my favorite comic book shop to date and I look forward to coming back soon. Brothers This is probably the greatest shot from my graduation, done by my sister-aunt @cuppycake1981 after coordinating the whole thing. I was truly awe struck upon seeing my brother for the first time since a brief run in back in 2013. Prior to that he had no idea I even existed until I discovered his Facebook and decided to message him about who I was. Two brothers, five months apart, separated for 18 years. Raised by our respective mothers for so long, it wasn’t until graduation that I finally got to see my literal brother from another mother in the flesh in our first true meeting as I have him a big hug. In the words of Drake and Josh “Hug me brotha!” are all that can truly describe the joy in a meeting so long awaited yet maybe that’s the beauty in it all. Rather than letting the past ways hold us back, this one meeting showed both of us it’s time to “kill the past” as it’s the only way to become who we were meant to be. Not distant relatives who favor each other yet never convene but every ounce of the meaning of the phrase — brothers. Wow. Where do I start? I would like to thank you all for voting me as your Prom King for 2018. It’s honestly pretty amazing that this happened as I still remember being in shock that people were even making me a nomination. So many of you guys were out there to support and believed a geek could fly, even getting others to join the cause. I guess this goes to show that , you can go to chess, adore comics and Star Wars, be a paid Gaming Club member, a knight of Spring Hill’s Fencing Club, take a beautiful date to Prom and become a KING all at the same time. Me standing up there was a representation of all my homies, all my geeks and anyone who champions the cause of outsiders. I honestly just like having a good time and seeing people have a good time. People always told me I couldn’t dance, and had no rhythm yet once I stopped giving a care I was freed from it. I do my own style, and I’m my own man. A bastard with no father that took the name LaBord, and became a King. I’ve found that honest expression of self and unapologetically doing such is where it’s at. I used to not even go to these types of events as i was a lone wolf of sorts, but like a caterpillar going into a cocoon, I went through metamorphosis and became the butterfly I was born to be. If anything, this goes to show that if you’re good to people and treat everyone with dignity and respect, it’ll pay you back in ways you couldn’t imagine. You don’t have to have one group, be kind to them all instead. It’s not being nice to get something back but for the integrity of helping your fellow man and enjoying the moment and the beauty of it all. Love you guys a lot and thank you for making me your King.
