Weʻre bringing back this photo for #throwbackthursday! This picture by IBEW 1260was taken last October. The weather gave no breaks to these Maui Electric linemen but they persisted and kept power up despite equipment failures, fires and high winds. Mahalo to Aki, Ed, Grant and Kenny for their hard work!

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) team shared this photo taken on July 22, 2018 of the fissure 8 channel. As shown in the image, the channel continues to push lava toward the coast. The trail overflowed, but the lava was confined and did not threaten any homes or structures. It looks like Pohoiki boat ramp and Isaac Hale Beach Park are not too far from the lava’s path.

Home Economists
Tumblr media
Introducing the Cookie Ladies Ruth, Regina, Pat, Julia and Charlotte! In many ways, our home economists were our companies’ first outreach specialists starting from back in the 1920s. They were the go-to experts on the newest technologies, visiting customers in their homes or holding large cooking classes in the King Street Auditorium to demonstrate the proper use of the appliance and, of course, share new recipes. Affectionately known as the Cookie Ladies, they provided recipes that were easy and nutritious to our customers. Weed and Seed Luncheon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last week Friday, James Campbell High School held their annual Weed and Seed Appreciation Luncheon, where students demonstrated their cooking skills by preparing dishes for sponsors, partners, and volunteers. Led by Executive Chef Darryl Shinogi of Roy's Hawaii Ko Olina, students from the Weed and Seed Culinary Arts Program at James Campbell High School are required to participate in a 6-week intensive culinary class which focuses on teamwork, leadership, cleanliness, and of course quality of finished products. The program also aims to encourage positive activities and build lifelong skills. Hawaiian Electric is proud to support a program that is making such a positive impact on the youth and communities in the Leeward area!

Last week Saturday, June 30, Malama Pupukea-Waimea started their Native Hawaiian Plant Coastal Restoration Project which involved removing invasive vegetation and replacing them with native plants. These efforts help improve the health of coral in the area by reducing erosion and sedimentation. Mahalo to Malama Pupukea-Waimea for having us and to all of our Hawaiian Electric volunteers for participating in this project!

We are preparing to open the first phase of the Community-Based Renewable Energy (CBRE) program next week on July 11 for applications by qualified subscriber organizations that wish to build and operate a community solar facility. As approved for implementation by the Public Utilities Commission, the program will provide the benefits of solar energy to residential and commercial customers without access to privately-owned rooftop solar, including many renters and apartment dwellers. The first phase of CBRE aims to bring online a total of 8 megawatts of solar, equivalent to a small grid-scale array, in the Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light service territories. We’re wild about wildlife! Hawaii is home to many amazing animals, and it’s difficult to pick just one to showcase for Wild About Wildlife Month but this year, we’re featuring the endangered Oahu elepaio. It’s appetite for insects helped traditional Hawaiian canoe makers select better trees for their wood, and the bird is known for its loud whistles which is how it got its name. As the first state to set a 100% renewable energy goal, Hawaii must overcome new challenges with innovative solutions. Working with Verizon, we were able to leverage smart sensors on their network, allowing the collection of near real-time data. Together, we can accomplish more for our islands.

Just keep paddling! Our volunteers were invited by the organizers of the Waimanalo Canoe Club to help at the annual Waimanalo Regatta and Canoe Festival. Our employees also participated in the regatta competition and paddled with different canoe clubs. The Waimanalo Canoe Club focuses on educating keiki about water, showing them how to get in the water, and teaching the children how to paddle. This community effort helps bring generations together to have fun and learn about paddling.

Oh, rats! Earlier this month, 3,000 people in Iroquois Point were left without power after a rat got into a substation and damaged some equipment. And just last week, 2,300 Mililani customers lost power for more than an hour due to a rodent incursion.
Two rat-related outages in two weeks are unusual, but not unheard of. In 2017, animals caused 49 outages across the Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light service territories.
Experts say rodents like the warmth and shelter provided by electrical equipment. Rats in particular need to chew to keep their teeth trimmed and sharp and most homeowners know how rats enjoy wiring and rubber cable insulation. Visit our blog at https://medium.com/@PoweringHawaii to read more.
