My thoughts on Superman (2025)
Massive spoiler warning ahead, if you've seen the film or just don't care about spoilers, I've put stuff under the cut :). Anyway I just got back from seeing this movie and I needed to get the brainrot out of my system. Enjoy
So, first thought out of the way- the movie was peak. I will keep saying it until my lungs give out, this was the perfect Superman film.
I am planning to write an entire essay (similar to the Robins legacy essay) about Superman and everything he represents, but thatās for later me who isnāt sleep deprived and fighting a migraine, also I think I need to rewatch the film to fully gather my thoughts without big feelings getting in the way. Because when I tell you I was tearing up? Man. Within like- the first five minutes of the film when Clark flies past the camera and it focuses on the logo on his chest? That was enough to make my eyes water a bit. Canāt help it, Iām a simple guy.
On that note, this was golden age Superman. Everything about the film felt so heartfelt and true to what makes Superman so amazing. The score was perfect, it had a lovely mix of modern ideas mixed with the very classic Superman theme, and keeping this theme as a recurring motif was genius. Obviously, the theme is often associated with glory and flying and the Man of Steel using his super awesome laser vision and strong punches, but using the motif throughout emotional moments was so clever. Itās a beautiful reminder of Supermanās humanity, it forces us to remember that he isnāt just a superhero here to protect Earth- he is a reporter, a friend, a lover, a son. Kal-El, Clark Kent, Superman is as human as we are.
And this ongoing theme of humanity is present throughout the whole film, Over and over again, the audience is bombarded with people saying that Clark is an alien, he isnāt a person, throwing around the term āmetahumanā consistently. But as the film progresses, we are forced not to listen, but to watch. We see Clark get hurt, he gets upset and frustrated, heās impulsive and kind and makes jokes, we are made to see Superman as a person, not simply an alien.
Mild distraction, Iām listening to the official soundtrack as I type and one of the songs is called āBeing Humanā... I will sob.
One of my favourite scenes in the film was when Clark visited his parents in Kansas (not major spoilers, some of this scene was in the trailer but final warning). John Kent tells Clark that regardless of any reason he was sent to Earth, whether his birth parents wanted him to do good or not, he pushes the idea that it is Clark and Clark alone that decides what his purpose is. He is good because he chooses to be, and that is his greatest attribute.
I also love Clarkās final speech to Lex. Clark forces Lex and his team to see him and understand that it doesnāt matter where he came from, he has humanity within him. He states himself that his most powerful trait is that he is human and that, in my opinion, is what makes Superman so compelling. By definition, he is an alien, he crash landed on Earth from another planet, but he was raised as a regular person. Itās so easy to look at Kal-El and only see him at surface level- a powerful, near indestructible force that outmatches any living thing on our Earth. But this film shows us that he is more than that, he has so much underneath that oftentimes people choose to disregard. Getting to see him crack jokes, fail, lose fights, get injured, cry alongside his father, those are all crucial moments, they exist to remind us of who Superman really is- a farm boy who only wants to do good.
Another scene I adored was the flag scene. This was in the trailer and I wonāt go super in depth about why the scene happened, but I will mention itty bitty (major) spoilers. There was something so beautiful about the whole thing. After Lexās multiple attempts at ruining Supermanās image to the public, there was still a group who believed in him. When the group of children lifted their homemade flag with the house of Elās crest, that was the part of the film that drove it home and made me cry. Despite public opinion, despite where he came from or what his perceived intentions were, there was one group of people who believed in Superman. These people were in the middle of a war, facing extermination at the hands of greedy world leaders. They had very little money, no firepower and were on the verge of losing their freedom, but they had hope. Now I have notes and I need to do more research, but Iām planning an essay about Superman and the symbolism of hope and endurance so I wonāt go in depth about it right now.
Few smaller notes- Loved David Corenswet as Clark, absolutely phenomenal. He had the look, the mannerisms are what sealed it for me. Suit was incredible, the colours were bright, the red trunks are back and his cape dragged past his ankles- everything I want from my big blue boy scout. Lois had better characterisation Iād seen from her in years, I was so delighted they gave her a personality and drive. Obvs Nicholas Hoult played an amazing Lex Luthor, top tier, he really sold the āangry and jealousā thing. Brief toxic yaoi mention in terms of cloning, the clone was not explicitly Kon-El- didnāt look like him and was definitely the wrong alias and personality, but I liked that they mentioned Kryptonian cloning as a possibility. If a second film is released, I feel like Kon-El will be a good addition now that the idea has been explored. On the topic of the house of El, Kara Zor-El got a cameo in the form of a party addicted, Kesha-esque wreck. Hilarious, loved it, canāt wait to see her again. I think including Kara in the film was a great touch and it certainly opens the doors to Kon-El and, depending on the time frame they go with, Jon Kent.
I could talk about the soundtrack all day, simple but highly effective, about what you would expect from a superhero film. The lighting and cinematography was beautiful, everything felt so bright and warm. Even in scenes that were darker and grittier, I wasnāt struggling to see, they kept the lighting dynamic enough to make the scenes coherent and more interesting. The best way I can describe the visuals, everything from costumes to lighting to backdrops- it was like a comic book. In a world of gritty, ārealisticā, MCU style comic films, it is so refreshing to see a movie about a superhero that clearly comes from the mind of a genuine superhero fan. James Gunnās Superman was made for comic fans, packed full of incredible moments that felt familiar to long time readers. But this story was told in a way that I can only describe as accessible. If youād never picked up a DC comic in your life, you wouldn't have a hard time following the film.
Very quick notes- Jimmy Olsen is a legend, didnāt realise he got game. I despise Green Lantern and want every single one of them gone on a good day, I did not like that the GL they included was Guy Gardner of all people. For the record, I would have accepted Hal Jordan. Maybe. Despite my hatred for the Lantern Corps, Guy was a funny addition, he had some great moments. Loved that they kept his stupid haircut and his ability to aura farm despite being a massive loser. Mr Terrific was awesome, I donāt know much about his character so I canāt say anything about accuracy, all I can say is that he was funny and I am definitely interested in his story.
All of this to say- I loved this movie. It was everything I wanted out of a Superman film. It was deep and emotional and felt like it was truly made for fans, a nice change of pace from what DC normally throws out. I would recommend it to both long running fans and newer audiences, this version of Clark Kent represented everything that Superman was created to be. He is hope, heās safety, heās a champion of the oppressed. Superman is truth, justice and a better tomorrow.

Iām like 6 days behind on my self imposed AU challenge so Iām gonna queue them throughout the night lolā¦. Day 4: Bruce and Dick role swapā¦.
Alfred is appointed as Bruceās guardian like usual but the boy canāt get the man that held him and covered his eyes from his dead parents out of his head. The little detective tracks him down to a gym in the Narrows, where heās been working since he aged out of the Gotham foster care system. Guess where Bruce wants to take self defence/gymnastics(?) lessons now.

#rambling in tags because I can#with the current state of the world in regards to both climate and politics#a story like this in my opinion was needed#superman has always been a character to stand up for ppl who couldnāt fight for themselves#and heās always represented the idea of fighting against your oppressors#but I think those ideals have been like- lost? writers stopped caring about it#so to see those aspects brought back and highlighted is so important to me#this version of Kal-el is a fighter for the working class and is a living symbol of workers#he wears the symbol of the labour guild with so much pride and- ugh#itās incredible.
