I read a lot of Spider-man meets the Batfam fics, and every time Peter's tryna hack up or buy some illegal legal documents, or figure out an excuse for why he doesn't legally or socially exist in that universe, I always think 'dude, just say you were raised in a cult.'

Cuz like, America has a lot of cults. It's not unbelievable to assume he grew up in one where they were too off the grid and paranoid to register their kids with the government. And it would explain how he isn't familiar with shit like pop culture, superheroes, and the like.

The CDC website is currently (02FEB2025) being scrubbed of public health information and decades of research. Content from the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, which includes data from a national survey, has disappeared; so have parts of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Social Vulnerability Index and the Environmental Justice Index. All links for LGBTQ+ pages have disappeared. Women’s health pages have disappeared. Contraceptive guidance is gone. Reproductive health information is gone. CDC vaccination information statements have disappeared. Bird Flu findings are being suppressed. The CDC's landing page for HIV data has vanished. HIV study data has disappeared. The AtlasPlus tool, which contains nearly 20 years of CDC surveillance data on HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis, is down. Remaining information may be in the process of being altered.

The Department of Government Efficiency, run by Elon Musk, has hacked into government systems that host Social Security and Medicare benefit payment systems, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, service of government workers, grants, benefits, payments to government contractors, medical information, etc. Government employees who manage these systems have reportedly been locked out. The Trump administration has frozen external communications from federal health agencies, including the CDC, FDA, and USDA.This includes press releases, social media updates, and critical scientific publications like the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The directive requires all outgoing public health communications to have 'approval' from Trump-appointed political appointees to ensure they align with the administration's policies and priorities before release.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official, John Nkengasong, sent a memo to senior leaders at the agency telling them that all staff who work with the WHO must immediately stop their collaborations and "await further guidance." CDC staff have been ordered to immediately stop "engaging with WHO (World Health Organization) through technical working groups, coordinating centers, advisory boards, cooperative agreements or other means — in person or virtual." CDC staff are no longer allowed to visit WHO offices.

All U.S. global health funding has been frozen. This includes funding for PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief. PEPFAR provides billions in funding to organizations to combat HIV and currently provides HIV medications to more than 20 million people across 55 countries. Ceasing this program will put millions of lives in jeopardy. Clinics have reportedly "stopped distributing medications and PEPFAR central information systems were shut down." Workers have been ordered to cease care or "they will be in defiance of the stop-work order and disciplinary action will be taken" U.S. contractors working for the program have reportedly been laid off. Even if this action proves to be temporary (which currently seems unlikely) pausing retroviral medications (the medications used for HIV treatments) for any length of time is a serious risk.

I'll try to explain this risk: Imagine you have an HIV positive patient. They take a retroviral provided by the PEPFAR program, which suppresses the HIV virus and significantly reduces chance of spread to others. They are then denied medication. As the HIV medication lessens in the patient's body, the virus regains strength and multiplies. Since there is less retroviral medication in the body, the virus becomes stronger and has the ability to analyze the medication without significant damage. The virus can then mutate to resist the retroviral medication entirely. If patients stop medication on a mass scale, the chance of medication-resistant mutation occurring in the HIV positive population increases significantly. What does this mean for the world? We could soon have an uncontrollable global spread of new strains of HIV that are resistant to all known methods of suppression and treatment.

Trump has banned transgender individuals from serving openly in the military and shut down all diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives for both active duty military and veterans. VA staff have been ordered to report efforts to conceal diversity and inclusion personnel, or face "adverse consequences". Federal employees have also been ordered to remove pronouns from all correspondence.

The following story is being supressed in the U.S. news so I’ll share it here: A few days ago, a transgender veteran hanged themselves by jumping from a Veteran’s Affairs hospital garage. They were found wrapped in a transgender pride flag.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is currently undergoing the confirmation process to become Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). This is a role that requires deep knowledge of healthcare systems and science-based policymaking. Kennedy has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of relevant education and has no formal qualifications or experience in healthcare, public health administration, or federal governance that align with the responsibilities of the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). If confirmed, Kennedy would oversee a $1.7 trillion budget and agencies like the FDA and CDC, raising fears that his leadership could disrupt critical programs related to disease prevention, vaccine distribution, healthcare access, and safety inspections of food and hospitals. He has stated that he plans to fire and replace 600 employees at the NIH and that he "will have every nutritional scientist" in the health and agriculture departments fired. Kennedy is widely known for spreading race-based medicine ideologies, conspiracy theories, and vaccine misinformation, including debunked claims linking vaccines to autism. He has also publicly spread HIV misinformation.

As many are already aware: USDA Inspector General Phyllis Fong has been fired. As of today she has not yet been replaced by a Trump appointee. The USDA Inspector General is responsible for investigating fraud, waste, abuse, and inefficiencies in USDA operations, including food safety programs. Staffing shortages and inspection gaps from layoffs and a nationwide federal hiring freeze has already strained the system, significantly increasing risks of foodborne illnesses in the U.S.

Tariff-related public health concerns to keep an eye on:

U.S. farmers were not given any time to adjust agricultural infrastructure to support the tariffs. Higher reliance on domestic food production (meaning food production within the USA) could lead to unregulated intensified farming practices, also impacting environmental health and food safety in the long term. Economic pressures from falling livestock prices due to retaliatory tariffs could force producers to cut costs, potentially compromising animal welfare. For example, farmers may reduce spending on proper housing, veterinary care, or feed quality. Farmers may keep more animals in facilities not designed for increased occupancy for longer periods, leading to overcrowding, animal neglect/cruelty, increased stress, and disease.

To offset increased costs due to the tariffs, both foreign and domestic food producers may be tempted and even incentivized to cut corners on quality control & sanitation standards. This will increase the risk of foodborne illnesses and compromise food safety. Producers may also be tempted to cut corners on production costs by relying on fillers and chemicals.

Trade tensions may disrupt collaborative efforts between countries like Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. on cross-border animal health monitoring systems, making it harder to control disease outbreaks. Retaliatory tariffs may also discourage trade partnerships with countries that have strong food safety standards. This could result in imports from less-regulated markets with weaker safety protocols.

The tariffs might force some industries to source materials from alternative suppliers. For example, the pet food industry relies on high-quality tinplate steel for canned products to prevent food safety issues such as discoloration or spoilage. If tariffs affect the availability of quality materials, it could impact food safety. Changes in established supply chains could lead to temporary disruptions in food distribution, potentially affecting the freshness and safety of perishable goods. Retaliatory tariffs from China, Mexico, Canada, and their allies are already in the process of being implemented.

A few more safety domestic farming concerns include: soil degradation & erosion, unregulated use of fertilizers and pesticides, livestock manure and agricultural chemicals contaminating drinking water, nitrous oxide fumes, deforestation, habitat loss, overfishing, declining insect populations, water shortages from over-extraction of groundwater & unregulated irrigation practices, zoonotic diseases spreading from animals to humans, and antibiotic overuse in livestock to mitigate poor conditions.
