I think there's something to be said that saying the words "Deny, Defend, Depose, you're next" to an insurance sales rep can get you arrested for 'threats of mass homicide' or whatever with a threat of 15 years in prison

But when I was a manager in a fast food restaurant I've had customers throw food at me, demand for my personal phone number with an added threat of "Well I'll just have to FIND it", customers charging past the front counter to physically intimidate me and my coworkers, screaming and swearing, demands to know what time I get out of work, demands to know when my manager would be at work as a threat, people sitting in their car waiting for me to finish closing because they were angry at me, causing me to stay in the office watching the camera waiting for them to drive away...

But none of those incidents are arrest-able offenses, not one, any time I called the cops on any customer I would just hear excuses like " "there isn't anything illegal about calling a restaurant", that nothing physical happened and therefore there's nothing they could do, to call back and let them know if anything else happens

Idk, just think it's A TEENY TINY BIT ODD

Cop in the news goes "words have consequences" as if people don't berate and threaten fast food and retail workers every day

Regulus Black, to James, has always been the model heir to the throne of House Black. All the proof in how he carries himself. However, this is the first time James can almost see through it. It’s all so perfect, so perfect it could be an act.

Could be an act.

An Act.

Regulus Black is an act. And James, after a few hours of paying attention, has realized it.

No one, and James means no one, could put up with the Black family and not build two different personalities. It’s how Sirius got through. James mentally corrects himself, it’s how Sirius is getting through.

Sirius hides behind himself, the him he thinks he should be. The mask slips on so seamlessly that James had a hard time cracking the code at first, but he and Sirius are a thread of the same energy, intertwined by the very fibers that make them up. James knows the moment Sirius’ smile gets too wide, or the way his laugh turns dog-like; too loud and a hint sinister, that it isn’t Sirius. Not really. It’s the first layer. James would bet anything Regulus has one too.

The difference, Sirius copes using attention and charm. Regulus seems to use sharp words and even sharper teeth.

Sirius grins and Regulus bites.

James wants to find out how deep when Regulus speaks from a few feet in front of him, eyes made of stone.

“I have rules.” Venom spilling onto James’ shoes.

“Right. What are they, then?”

“No talking. No fucking with me, pranks included. We’re not friends, and we never will be. Lastly, if you so much as mention Sirius I will push you off the astronomy tower.” Regulus is still leaning against the wall with his arms crossed across his chest. If he does have a mask James hasn’t seen it slip once.

“If I don’t agree with your rules?” James has shifted to cross his arms as well. Regulus Black may be a year younger, but he has a presence James can’t quite compare to. It washes over him. James rarely backs down from a fight, but somehow he knows this is one of those rare times.

Regulus may be younger but his unspoken voice leaves a chill in the air, it commands authority and despises being ignored. Regulus Black is the cold statue of an heir. The kind of heir that knows they weren’t born for the throne, they were made for it.

Sirius was born for it. Regulus has sculpted himself for it. Which is worse? Which is a kinder fate?

James doesn’t know.

“Sure, Black. Fine. But I have rules too, then.”
