A basic starter project if you want to start growing your own food but have no money & no experience, assuming you like perilla/shiso, basil, mint, sage, or other herbs that have a square stem*.
1. Get a stem or five**, and pluck all the leaves off, except for the smallest. I worked with perilla/shiso this time, and started them in water, but often you can start them straight into soil. Here's one that's started to root in water:

2. Prepare your container. Someone I know had an excess of water jugs, so I cut it in half, poked a few holes in what was the top half, and then put it upside down inside of the bottom half. Ta-da, pot with drainage & saucer:

Be careful, obviously, because hurting yourself makes this go from a free project to a possibly rather expensive one. Soil can gotten for free, see the green onion version for more info on that.
3. Carefully make holes and plant your cuttings. I put a bag over the top to help increase humidity, because basil and perilla both seem a little fussy.

4. Put in the brightest light you have, and keep the soil evenly moist until you see new growth. These I'm starting inside but with the intention to plant outside in the summer. Obligatory check what's invasive in your area because someone told me perilla was invasive where they live. It's very much not here, it dies with the frost and I haven't gotten it to self-sow.
Tips:
Basil and perilla like it warm (above 50f/10c) and are best started indoors. Rosemary, sage, mint, etc, I've found easy to start outdoors. Keep shaded, moist, and cool until well established.
*for a fun project, look up how many culinary herbs are in the mint family! Lamiaceae will haunt your dreams!
** the first time I tried this, it was a stem of basil from take out, and I was so excited that it worked.

I'm an immigrant in the U.S. and right now I'm trying to figure out a way to pay for next term's tuition. I am from Ukraine and my entire family was displaced to Ireland when the war started. As a result of the war and displacement, I don't have sufficient funds to sponsor my education anymore :(

This is your daily reminder to not be ashamed of making your life easy for yourself.
Cut your food into small pieces, make the font size 30 on your e book, use straws to drink, get a pen that’s comfortable to hold, take more naps, walk slowly, eat another cookie, buy velcro shoes, re-watch the part you couldn’t understand the first time, write things on your hands so you don’t forget it… whatever you want and/or need
Don’t let anyone tell you how you should be doing things. We don’t need to prove each other anything

What direction are you going? When you think about your future do you feel dread or hope?
I feel both, and often times the dread just builds up. In the hope section, I am definitely still considering changing my major to Soil Science! I feel such a pull right now towards this and am going to wait it out longer, but it truly does feel like there are so many possibilities, and I have been reading a lot more books where characters are in their late 20s-early 30s, which has honestly helped me feel like this feeling of turmoil that comes with completing milestones like graduating highschool and beginning college and getting a drivers license doesn't mean that the work ahead is as daunting.
It can be exciting, just the aspects of finances and capitalism and the state of the U.S. makes it certainly feel like your future is intertwined so much with your job/career. I want a career, and having jobs along the way and still getting to value the connections in my life and the world is possible. It is hard, and maybe it won't go how I try to plan and envision my future jobs and careers. But it is possible, and if you have read this far, reminder that your life is also full of possabilities! Things can feel completely soul crushing and dreadful, while simultaneously also having so much opportunity.
Your pain is your pain and it sucks and it doesn't have to be a "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" ableist bullshit, but you still deserve to feel joy and find wonder somewhere within humanity and the world, while recognizing the pain and loss of our world. It's hard to feel both. It's so complicated, but seeing the ways in which there is still wonder brings me joy, even if it doesn't bring me hope for a large section of humanity or the future. I am thankful to want to live.

I love soil AHAGDSGSJ I want to take a soil science lab someday ahhh I just get the urge to change my major and become a soil scientist but idk if that is a sound decision, I want too though. I am already majoring in a related field, that has more flexibility. Dirt makes me so squiggly rn and I want to stare at it. I keep thinking about this layers of the soil painting jar I made back in first grade and I want to make another one ahhh. Soil can impact so much and its so cool, like how effective rainfall is?! Yay. I love how soil can be a mix of so many things! Organic matter and rocks! So cool!!!!
