Story idea: The prince of a kingdom is the sole heir to the throne. His parents both have magical abilities, his mother has the power to read souls and know a person’s intentions and deepest desires from a mere glance, and his father has the ability to summon creatures from the darkest corners of the universe to fight at his bidding.
The prince however, was born with neither of these abilities. His mother told him at a young age to conceal his power from his father, and so he did. His father was at first unhappy by his apparent “lack of magic”, but nonetheless he put all his effort into making him the strongest swordsman and future king he could be.
When the prince became a teenager, it became harder to conceal his powers. Every burst of emotion he felt made his hands itch to use magic. But still, he contained it for the sake of obeying his mother.
It was midday, the sun casting rays of light down on the battle arena. The king and queen sat on their adjacent thrones at the top of the stadium, looking down at the fight taking place between their son and a powerful sorcerer. This was a battle for the championship title of greatest fighter in the kingdom, and the prince did not want to lose this final match.
He started out strong, deflecting each fire strike and landing a couple blows on the sorcerer. He was doing decent enough until the sorcerer started using his full abilities and sent waves of fire crashing down on the prince. He fell to the floor, utterly defeated as flames scorched his skin. The magic he’d held onto for so long could no longer be contained, and suddenly the earth began to rumble.
The arena was shaking and audience members gasped as a gargantuan tree emerged from the dirt floor, overtaking the arena and pinning his adversary to the ground with its roots.
The prince was amazed, staring in awe at the beautiful plant life he had created. His awe quickly faded when he heard his mother cry out in agony. He saw her through the branches, in the jaws of a shadowy monster his father had summoned.
“YOU HAVE MADE ME LOOK A FOOL IN FRONT OF MY ENTIRE KINGDOM YOU WRETCHED WENCH!” the king’s voice thundered. His mother looked over at the prince as the jaws of the beast snapped down and she released one last agonised scream.
Then everything went quiet, and the king turned to the boy who was once the heir to the throne.
“You are not my child,” he took a long pause, “and you have no place in my kingdom. Leave now before I turn you into nothing more than bones and ash.”
And so the former prince left, grief stricken and with nothing. He started formulating ideas, figuring out what to do next, and came up with two lofty goals.
One, find out who is birth father is, and two, take back the throne he was raised to rule.

She wants revenge.
Hundreds of years ago Nyx was one of the few Guardians on planet Avaris. Ever since she was young she trained to use magic as a way to protect the planet from harmful invaders. If a portal was opened in proximity to her she could sense it, and would go to that location immediately. She’d monitor the new-comers, deduct whether they were dangerous or not. If she saw one of them attack any of the ancient beasts, she would immediately slash their throats.
At some point powerful magic holders from Earth invaded her planet, and opened a huge portal in the center of the world. She confronted them directly with the other guardians, worried for the harm they might cause her home.
“I am Nyx, a Guardian of the ancient beings on this planet. I warn you now, if one of you causes harm to a creature protected by me, you will not see another day.”
A few of the earthlings snickered, and one of the men in the group stepped forward. He’s tall with a chiseled face and the stance of a royal knight. His outfit was an all white button up uniform with gold accents and a cape that hung off his left shoulder. “Pleasure to meet you, Nyx, Guardian of ancient entities. I am David Cheslyn, leader of this group of wanderers. May I ask, what exactly are these creatures we should avoid hurting, miss?”
Nyx was unfazed by the grandeur of his clothes and his well-mannered, personable nature. She stepped to the side and let one of the beasts walk in front of her.
The group of earthlings gasped in astonishment as an inky black monster morphed in front of them, reaching its full height as it towered over them.
“Shouldn’t you be more worried that WE are in danger? That creature looks like it could demolish us in seconds!” David said in a chortle. Nyx was not amused.
“I care for this creatures safety, it is formidable in battle, yes, but it has its weaknesses. We need to keep them alive and protect them, for without them, a great evil will overtake this world. They feast on negative energy, and every time one of them is killed the energy stored in them is put back into our universe. I cannot stress enough that if you hurt any of them, we, the Guardians, will murder each and every last one of you.”
While most trespassers would’ve shown some sort of fear at the end of this speech, the humans from earth had given no inclination of wariness. In fact, if Nyx had read their expressions correctly, she saw the hunger for a challenge in their eyes.
But for a few years the humans played it safe, set up camps and ignored the ancient creatures that lingered around them. Until one day, one of the men cried out in pain.
“ONE OF THE BEASTS BIT ME! IT TOOK MY HAND!!”
As if someone had called for her, Nyx appeared from the shadows of some trees. She approached the man who currently bled out on the ground. She closed her eyes and whispered some words, and with her magic she sealed the wound shut.
“Why would you protect a monster?!” the leader of their group, David himself, emerged from his makeshift house. “It hurt one of us! It deserves to be slain-“
“It feeds on negative energy, obviously it has attacked this man in your group for a reason,” Nyx said in an accusatory tone.
David narrowed his eyes and took in the situation. He looked at his fellow earthling who still lay on the ground. His eyes went to the nub where the man’s hand used to be. After he took everything in, his eyes glare into Nyx’s. “I don’t care whether your monster ‘feeds on negative energy’ or whatever you call it, this has gone too far. We’ve tolerated these beasts stomping over our crops and startling the livestock for long enough. I’m sick of it.” He turned to his group. “Who’s ready to take these monsters down?!” They gave a loud cheer.
Nyx’s eyes widened. “If this is what you have decided, I have no choice but to kill you all.”
“So be it, die for the sake of your monsters,” David laughed.
The other Guardians emerged from the shadows. They stood across from the group of humans, positioned and poised for battle.
Nyx screamed out, “ATTACK!!!” and the Guardians formed weapons out of shadows and lunged into battle. Nyx did not know what would come next, if she had, maybe she would’ve done things differently.
This day has haunted her for two hundred years.
David’s eyes had gone white, and his body flew into the air. He waved his arms wildly and storm clouds gathered. Another in the group launched fragments of ice as David crashed lightning down on the Guardians.
Some of the Guardians turned to dust immediately, some of them suffered long agonising deaths. Nyx tried her best to hold back their blows with a net of web but it was of no use. The damage was already done in a matter of minutes.
David Cheslyn’s pupils returned to his eyes and he floated gently to the ground. He gave Nyx a little smile. “Seems your army was insufficient, but alas, I shall spare you as I’m a generous soul.” His little smile had become a malevolent grin. “Tie her up.”
Nyx was not done fighting; she couldn’t be done fighting. She couldn’t let these monsters kill the one thing ridding this planet of evil.
With a burst of pure rage, Nyx’s eyes glowed and gargantuan bat wings tore through her cloak. She morphed into a large dragon the colour of a deep purple sky, with black antlers on the top of its head. She’s never experienced such a transformation before, and she felt the pure power of this form coursing throughout her giant reptilian limbs.
Neon purple flames mixed with web scattered out of her mouth, killing a few from the group of earthlings. She picked up David in her mouth, revelling in his screams of anguish and pure terror, then with a satisfying crunch, he was no more.
Her energy was zapped and she transformed back into a regular Guardian. The few who remained alive ran off with their belongings, but she was satisfied. At least the ancient beasts would be safe another day.
But the deaths of her fellow guardians took a tole on her and she hid away for a while. She made a fortress for her and the ancient creatures, and she plotted.
Plotted to take back the world that was once theirs. Plotted to kill every last human being that set foot in her realm.
