1. What’s your favourite sims death? i love the telescope/meteor death and how not rare it is even if it is supposed to be lol

2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match? maxis match, aiming to be a bit maxis mix lately lol

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight? not usually no, whatever happens, happens. kinda off topic but rosalie likes the gym and i made her use the machine like twice and now her arms are getting BUFF

4. Do you use move objects? yes ma’am

5. Favorite mod? i used to only really have ui and mc command center but recently i’ve really been liking the rpo mod and other story enhancing mods!

6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got? first expansion: get to work, first stuff: vintage glamour, first game pack: parenthood... i think. i was there since the beginning lol

7. Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing? lol i like how rebouks described it... LIVE, laugh, love is how i say it

8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? it changes all the time, i love making sims. laurynn is really cool and i enjoyed making her, as well as charley

9. Have you made a simself? i actually did recently! sent it to my dear friend @aurorangen

10. What sim traits do you give yourself? ambitious, bookworm, high maintenance

11. Which is your favorite EA hair color? there’s a very specific brown swatch that they added recently that i really like

12. Favorite EA hair? they’ve been adding a lot of good natural hair textures lately, so one of those!

13. Favorite life stage? i’ve grown to really like infant gameplay! it’s my first time playing with them and growing together adds a lot of cool depth. but other than that probably young adult

14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? rarely a builder, god bless you guys who can build, but i LOVE decorating rooms and builds. definitely more of a cas/gameplay girly tho

16. Do you have any simblr friends/a sim squad? yeah! i mean i think so? i like to imagine we’re all basically besties at this point lol

17. What’s your favorite game? (1, 2, 3, or 4) i used to say sims 3 because my nostalgia, but i think right now 4 is where i spend a lot of my time

19. Do you have a YouTube for sims? i made one years ago, but never posted on it lol. i don’t really have the time for it right now unfortunately, but it was always in the back of my mind

20. How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing? i have a lot more skin details and cc, and looking for much more tbh. i also think i pay a lot more attention to smaller details in my sim’s faces

Ranking of all the Christmas Horror Movies I’ve seen (as of 2022)

From worst to best (subjectively):

26: Alien Raiders (2008): There are Christmas decorations you see early on in the grocery store setting, so it counts. Just kind of a hostage thriller, that turned out to be sorta The Thing. Liked the twist ending a bit ,though.

25: Anna & the Apocalypse: I wish I can remember this more, especially the songs.

24: Better Watch Out: Way too effective in making you HATE the villain. Though in hindsight, they got off too easy.

23: Good Tidings: I went in thinking this would be more like a yuletide rip off of the Purge movies. But, we once again get those escaped lunatic tropes I’m not too fond of. It didn’t help that there were way too many points where they blew a chance to off one of these psycho killer Santas. I know that’s one of the themes they were going for. But you couldn’t done more to incapacitate one of them.

22: The Wolf of Snow Hollow: The werewolf reveal is a bit of a letdown, but between those scenes, I was morbidly enjoying our disaster of a human being we had in our protagonist. He really couldn’t do anything right.

21: Jack Frost (1997): Mostly enjoyable goofy slasher movie. But it loses on two points; It’s most famous scene has aged horribly, and the climax takes forever to finish him off.

20: Slay Belles: This might’ve been the cheapest one of the whole bunch; it looked it. You can tell most of the money went to the Krampus suit, though that’s probably the right call. Plot doesn’t even make whole lot of sense, but after a while, you just don’t care.

19: All the Creatures were Stirring: Pretty out there anthology. I’m pretty sure each segment is meant to be a Horror-Comedy. I got a special kick out of one having a certain famous Christmas character being a killer (I won’t spoil)

18: Sint: More like a killer St. Nicholas movie. Probably the most threatening of these considering he has an army he can besieged a whole city with. Not crazy about anyone dressing up as Black Pete, but at least they get offed.

17: The Lodge: “F around and find out”

16: Black Christmas (2019): This one feels like it has even less to do with Christmas then the original (Yes, that’s part of my criteria). What was subtext before is text here, for better or for worse. Not a bad idea, though maybe we could’ve had more fun in making these villains more pathetic.

15: Body (2015): If this isn’t a example of when to drop a toxic friend, I don’t know what is. It’s low because Christmas is only used to explain why the house is deserted.

14: Dead End: The most surreal family breakdown of all time

13: Silent Night (2012): Never saw the 1984 original. I know, how dare I?. Effective enough yule-themed slasher, I suppose.

12: Wind Chill: Kind of a Hitchcockian set up ambushed by a good old fashioned ghost story. Considering the holiday’s history, it’s sad there’s not more supernatural Christmas horror films like this these days. Bonus points for using carols as a plot point. I didn’t think they would keep tying it in once the characters were stuck. Also, another ACAB movie. Always good.

11: Christmas Bloody Christmas: first half is a realistic hang out between two friends. second half is the Terminator: Yuletide edition. Good kills, but it could’ve been even more messed up.

10: Santa’s Slay: Remember when they tried to make wrestlers into Slasher villains for a while? Kinda dull plot, but Bill Goldberg is at least fun and the kills are fun.

9: The Children: Little kids really can be the worst.

8: Rare Exports: Not my favorite killer Santa movie, but easily the most well-thought out.

7: A Christmas Horror Story: The stories are hit and miss, especially the endings. But yeah, the North Pole one is the best.

6: Deadly Games: While the premise is bonkers as presented, it also makes me a bit sad. This psychotic homeless man just wanted someone to play with if you think about it, but he’s clearly disturbed so people just keep passing him off until this happens. And that poor kid! Not only did he lose his dog, but he thinks he ruined Christmas at the end because he had to kill Santa! Though I think it proves my point where killer Santas are at their best either terrorizing kids or being helped by them.

5: Christmas Evil: The American Psycho of killer Santa movies. An early take that to the over-commercialization of Christmas and actually keeps the killer somewhat sympathetic even after he snaps and becomes homicidal. Side note, my theory on the ending is that he actually died.

4: Krampus: Christmas Vacation invaded by Gremlins! The amount of effort put in by this movie has spoiled me for all Christmas horror that has come after it. Michael Dougherty’s films need time to sink in for me. It didn’t help with the confusing ending. But even if it’s not the best Christmas Horror film, based on it’s look, themes, variety of killers, and Dickensian story beats, it might be the most Christmassy.

3: Scrooged: This counts just for A Christmas Carol in general, but I mention this one just on being the most effectively scary, even if I don’t buy Bill Murray as a changed man at the end quite. While it’s an old enough story to make fun of and pick apart, an effective enough modern update can remind us that it’s, at it’s heart, not just a ghost story, but a character breakdown and a psychological horror. Did I truly befriend or look up to people who would steer me wrong? Just because I do believed in the cynicism I am championing and subjecting to other people, is that not enough to make me righteous? Who am I really to the people in my life when I’m not in the room? And ultimately, If I don’t care, what’s the worst that could happen? It’s the essential Christmas story, because it’s about a simple thing; As long as you can act, it’s never too late. So before it looks like things are about to get worst: muster up a little courage, be willing to unlearn toxic habits, reach out to those you depend on, and of course, put a little love in your heart.

2: Black Christmas (1974); One of the original true Slasher movies. And still one of the creepiest. Also, definitely the kind of movie that were it released today would be called “woke”. (pro-abortion, male entitlement being a theme, etc.)

1: Gremlins: A stereotypical picturesque Christmas Movie setting invaded by the monstrous embodiment of the OG Winter Solstice holiday, Saturnalia (look it up). Works as a metaphor of the toll uncontrolled tourism can have on certain places, especially during the holidays. Plus, who doesn’t think Gizmo is cute?

That’s all the ones I can remember so hopefully that’s all of them. If I forgot one or I see a new one, I’ll do a follow-up saying where it would land on here. I might make a more in-depth post about my feelings for Christmas next week.

sorry it was a "one thing about me" game and i just asked about skz 😭 (im the last anon)

lmaooo the question is still about me in a way so don't worry 😹 it's a kinda long and funny story actually

so i had this friend in bts tumblr who became a multi stan and skz became their ults and she was trying very hard to get me into them when they just debuted, but back then i was in my second year of law school and didn't really have time to stan any other groups apart from bts.

while that was going on, i remember coming across a pic of hyunjin at a fansign and i was like. instantly in love. and i dmed it to her and was like HELP WHO IS THIS and she was like THAT IS HYUNJIN FROM STRAY KIDS and i asked about him ofc and found out he was 18 at the time and i was 21 so i went "okay nope he babie, bye" and would just kinda appreciate him from afar jdñskd bc he was soooo beautiful i would melt every time but he was babie to me back then :(

thennnn time passed by and i would always read about this "felix" guy and how talented he was and whatnot, but i didn't have a face to relate to him nor did i know he was from stray kids.

fast forward to early 2019, i was on the train to uni one morning dozing off at like 7am and i didn't have spotify premium back then lmao so once a playlist of mine ended it would just start playing random songs i didn't really look up. so i was listening to bts and their album ended and this reallyyyyy upbeat song started playing and i was kinda startled bc i mean it was 7am jdñaksña but it was so gooddd so i took my phone out to see what song it was and turns out it was miroh by skz 🥲 so i added it to my playlist and texted my friend like DUDE THIS SONG IS SO GOOD and she was like I TOLD YOU TO LISTEN TO THEM!!!!! so yeah she got really excited about it and sent me so many recs and told me all about them and i just finally gave in lol.

the first mv i watched was victory song and i was blown away by felix's voice and i finally saw his face and i was like oh okay so this is why everyone talks about him. and i thought he would be my bias right away BUT THENNNNN i saw hyunjin (kinda had forgotten he was part of skz by this point) and i was like 😭😭😭😭 and i think he was 19 by then and i was like ah fuck it and just stopped fighting it lol.

so yeah i was like, hyunjin first caught my eye as an individual but felix first caught my eye as a skz member, if that makes sense?? and regardless of me being a hoe for hyunjin, i got into skz mostly bc of felix's voice lmao, i just kept watching mvs and listening to their songs just so i could hear his voice. but hyunjin has been my ult all along :(

So. Tell us about Merlin.

Oh god! Oh Jesus! Well, that was back in 1821 when the band was formed... It was the first proper band, I guess, proper touring band that I'd been in... Was it? Guess it was. I joined in 1973 and they were called "Madrigal" at the time, and they were known for being a harmony band. And they- y'know, big harmonies, it was really impressive. Not in a Beach Boys way, but it was [unintellible]

Anyway, they got "discovered" by Roger Greenaway and turned into- What he wanted was, he wanted his own version of The Sweet or Mud or the bands that were around at the time. Sort of glam rock things, you know. So he stuck us all in leather catsuits-

Really?

Yeah, and feather boas and stuff, it was hilarious.

Was that very "you" at the time, or was it something...?

Well the fact is that the music was me. The fact is the music was me, so it was- because it was basically a rock band, is what it was. I mean a really good rock band. And the bass player had a Fender Precision and a 100-watt Marshall stack, you know. Keyboard player had a C3 Hammond and a Wurlitzer... In fact, he had- Check this out, anyone who knows anything about keyboards- Imagine being the road crew for this band.

He had a Hammond C3, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hohner Pianet, a Fender Rhodes... No, he didn't have a Rhodes. Um, a double keyboard Mellotron. A Minimoog. And a baby grand piano which was suspended on scaffolding over the C3!

Wow! Really? Wow, that's-

With- And on the lid of the piano which was up like that, the logo of the band was spotlighted-

Well. No, I never, I don't think I did - It wasn't me, it was the Melody Maker.

Oh! Oh, really? Right, okay...

Yeah, the Melody Maker had like a two-page spread on us and said- It was called - I've got it somewhere - It was called "Hype in the Pop Market" and it had mirror images of the two bands. It had CBS band Merlin, EMI band Queen. And it listed, you know, who was on guitar, who was on- doing vocals, who was on- And so on. And who was championing this within the production companies and everything. So it was Roy Thomas Baker with Queen, and then Roger Greenaway with us. Turns out, one had more success than the other!

'93? Yeah, about that, yeah. And when we'd been in rehearsals for a couple of weeks I thought it was safe to bring it up to Brian. And I said, "I used to be in a band- I don't suppose you'd remember a band called Merlin?"

And he went, "You were in Merlin?" He said, "Yeah we were worried about you!"

I said, "You needn't have been, obviously!"

But it was like, we were the rival band for about ten minutes. And then we realized how massively talented Queen were...

AFTERTHOUGHTS - ROUNDUP ROUND 2

Yahoo!! Got another afterthoughts round up thing. Like last time this is just a collection of thoughts for games I played recently, but didn't have a whole mountain of text to express my opinions on it. So I figured it'd be easier to just bundle them together. I'm contemplating maybe doing this once a month or so? But we'll see if I feel like it.

Regardless, just like last time (and any other time) these aren't meant to be serious reviews. More so they're just my thoughts thrown up onto the screen so people can see what I thought of each one! If ANY of the games I talk about are interesting to you, consider checking them out!

Kirby's Dreamland (April 27, 1992) - Gameboy

For some reason, this was the very first thing I played when Gameboy was added to the NSO service. I SWEAR I've played this game on the Wii Kirby collection before. I remember certain scenes so well like the shmup boss fight. But other scenes I just don't remember AT ALL!!

Regardless, yeah it's pretty fun. It's simple and cute. But absolutely is CRAZY boring just because there's no copy abilities. It's honestly nuts to me there was EVER a time where Kirby didn't have them. But the game is still worth playing, just maybe the Superstar remake of it instead of the original. Even still it has cute music and surprisingly great visuals for gameboy! Plus it still has fun and playful things like Microphone Kirby and again, the great Shmup bossfight which never came back despite being awesome.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (October 21, 1992) - Gameboy

HERE WE GO!! This is what I SHOULD have played first. This is a game I can confirm I've played TONS in my life because it's easily my favorite Gameboy game (between this and Wario Land 2/3 or maybe DuckTales)

Mario Land 2 is a FANTASTIC platformer that's super fun, super creative, and surprisingly in depth for a gameboy game. Hidden endings to levels, lots of unique worlds, a brand new powerup, original enemies for each world ect ect. It's a VERY creative game and without a doubt one of my favorite 2D Marios. Super easy to pick up and play and with its GREAT ost and sprite art, it still holds up. For real if you've never played it or are looking for a Gameboy game to try. This is the one I recommend! (then the Wario Land games. Which I haven't replayed 3 yet cause I wanna replay them all in order soon.)

Gargoyle's Quest (May 2, 1990) - Gameboy

For those who don't know, I am actually a BIG fan of Firebrand. Demon's Crest on SNES is easily one of my all time favorite games. And I've been meaning to play Firebrand's first two games for a while now but just... Never felt compelled to do so. Until they added the game to NSO and I figured. Why not?

Eeeh... I'll be honest, even though this has a LOT of the Demon's Crest staples. Like item collecting and swapping weapons. This game was just REALLY boring. The overworld sections with random encounters were REALLY dull and made the game feel so much longer than it needed to be. It does have pretty good music and nice sprites (although not as good as the above 2 cause it's 2 years older). Overall even though it's FAR from the worst game I've ever played, it just pales in comparison to Demon's Crest. Which is SO unfair to say, I know. But those are my thots, and you're gonna have to live with them. I'll certainly check out Gargoyle's Quest 2 to experience the full trilogy soon.

I WILL SAY THOUGH! This game gave us Firebrand's theme which gave us this SICK AS FUCK MvC3 remix! Love this song!!

APE OUT (February 28, 2019) - Nintendo Switch

And here we go! The first indie of the list! This wasn't a game I was SUPER looking to play just cause I'm not crazy about top down stuff like this. But the APE got into Fraymakers, which made me want to try it EVENTUALLY. And then my brother picked up the game on Switch! And I can't turn down the chance to play a game when it's RIGHT in front of me. So I played it! And yeah this game is PRETTY cool!

First off, I love the visuals. They're very simple but cool and the way blood splatters everywhere with the simple art style is a REALLY cool look. Plus, you play as a gorilla! That's awesome! How many games can you say that have a gorilla protagonist? The gameplay is tough, but simple and levels are quick enough that it's easy to just get up and try it again. The music is also cool and I REALLY love how it goes with the gameplay! My only real complaint is that your push attack can sometimes feel REALLY stubby. I had multiple times where I was trying to hit someone and would just miss for no reason and get shot to death. But I also was not stealthy at all and played the game very chaotically so maybe that had something to do with it lol. Regardless, cool little game!

Scribblenauts (September 15, 2009) - Nintendo DS

Next up is a game I haven't played in YEARS but suddenly had a huge itch to try again! This game is SO interesting and genuinely was a total blast to play. The gameplay of solving puzzles by just typing anything you want is GREAT and makes the game a super creative experience to beat for the first time. I tended to use a lot of the same tools to beat levels (pegasus, black hole, rope, trex, ect ect) but even still it was VERY fun to try and figure out how my favorite items could solve puzzles. And even when I got stuck, looking up a solution was always fun because there were TONS of answers filled with ideas I had never thought of! This game is just a blast to mess around with and see the limits of what you can make! And I was surprised by how much I LOVED the art style (the reptiles all looked SO CUTE) and especially the OST! What a lovely experience!

My biggest issues with it though has to be the controls. This game has some BULLSHIT in it from time to time. There were tons of moments where I'd try to pick up an item, only to have Maxwell move instead. Or I needed to look at something far away and the camera kept pulling back to Maxwell. Or the ropes just WOULDN'T WORK!! It could be frustrating but I think for the DS and a game so tied to the touch screen + stylus I don't really know how else you could make it work. Also... man, is it just me or do the action stages totally SUCK! They were so annoying compared to the puzzle stages.

Regardless, fun game. I will probably check out at least Super Scribblenauts cause getting to use adjectives sounds like it would make this format CRAZY!

Cuphead (September 29, 2017) - Xbox One

And here's the last one on the list! A game I just beat right now, actually! This is another one I hadn't played since it released, but I randomly had a huge itch to come back and try it again. And while it didn't super click the first time, it ABSOLUTELY clicked this time! I had a BLAST with this game! The visuals and music are amazing, that's a no brainer. The bosses all have so much personality and the whole experience is just FANTASTIC to look at and listen to. But I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the gameplay this time around. I'm usually not super into Contra stuff (I prefer shmups in like, flying vehicles I guess?) and I'm especially not into brutally hard games. But I absolutely have to say, this one felt VERY good. When I finally overcame a tough boss, I really felt good about it, which is not something I usually feel when playing super hard games. The characters are cute (I played as Mugman and Grim Matchstick was probably my favorite looking boss along with some of the girl bosses who were kinda hot I won't lie). And I LOVED that there's so many weapons to choose from. My setup was Spread, Roundabout, Smoke Bomb, and Energy Beam!

My complaints are mostly salty stuff. I think there's sometimes TOO much to focus on. A lot of phases just had little extra things here and there that were SO unneeded and made the phases so much worse for no reason. Then there were problems where I got hit when using my dash, or couldn't parry things I KNEW I parried, or would get fucked over by random bullshit, or could NEVER parry things above me despite it feeling like they wanted me to, or FUCK HOW'D I GET HIT BY THAT AUGH!!!... *cough* well, anyway. My biggest issue is the same I have with any difficult game. It's fun when the levels are short and sweet. But the longer levels were MASSIVE chores that felt annoying to grind through. The worst boss, without a question in my mind, was the Dr. Kahl fight. The third phase is SO easy but it's basically impossible to reach it with full health cause the first phase lasts SO long and has SO much needless BS in it. Oh well, I have more thoughts on the difficulty but honestly I had a lot of fun with it so I'll keep it to myself for now.

As for the Delicious Last Course? Eeeeh... Maybe some day. But right now? Nah I need to play something easy. Regardless, super cute game! Glad I came back to give it another go!

Just so much love for Dan for this video. He put so much into this video and thought about so many details - the music choices, the lighting changes, the art (and the coloring matching the lighting), some of the wording that he had literally be thinking about for years... And the follow-up from both him and Phil on Twitter. The shoutout to Phil in the description for “production assistance” always gets me too. Really no other words just ❤❤❤

He was so active on social media for a bit afterwards - sharing pictures of his rainbow birthday cake, balloons, this insta story, and these tweets specifically (1, 2, 3). And then of course going to Pride in early July (1, 2, 3), where he looks so happy in all the pictures from that day. 😭

you’re halfway into your kitchen when there’s a knock at your door, and you immediately gasp, blinking rapidly.

How Timothée Chalamet Channeled The Blockbuster Pressure of Leading Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ Back Into His Role – Venice Q&A

DEADLINE: In a few days Dune will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. You first met Denis Villeneuve about the role in May 2018 and started shooting in the early half of 2019. It was always going to be a long journey, but the pandemic stretched it even further. How does it feel to have finally arrived at this moment?

TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET: You know, I like to think that with every film I’ve done, whether it’s Call Me by Your Name or Beautiful Boy, The King, or Little Women, the character you play is almost a piece of your flesh. And that’s always true, but simply from the perspective of how long the shoot for Dune was, and also the arc that Paul Atreides is on, as well as the huge love and almost biblical connection that so many people have for the book and the original film, it really felt… tectonic, if that’s the right word for it. Just getting to this finish line feels like: phew.

And independent of what the film is now, and what it has become, the experience of making it was I was put in such a safe environment, which you can never take for granted as a human, as an actor, but especially when you’re just starting your career, and when this is the first film of this size you’ve ever done.

To get to work with Denis on it, to get to work with someone of his caliber, let alone on a book that he considers the book of his youth and one of the things he has connected to the most… When he would have it in his hands on set, his body language would become that of a fan; of a kid who had fallen in love with the book at home in Montreal. And when all the kids around him were wearing hockey jerseys with their favorite players’ names on the back, this was a kid wearing a jersey that said ‘Spielberg’ on the back.

For it all to come together, especially with the added challenge of the pandemic, it has all combined to make this moment feel especially spicy [laughs].

DEADLINE: The entire ensemble will show up in Venice.

CHALAMET: Right. And I just can’t believe it; Jason Momoa has the number one film on Netflix right now with Sweet Girl, which I just watched. And since we shot, Zendaya has had all this success with Euphoria and Malcolm & Marie. Just to be part of this cast, period, let alone as one of the title characters, it’s really the shit you dream of.

And let me not forget, too—and I know I’ve told you this before—that The Dark Knight was the movie that made me want to act. That movie had a score by Hans Zimmer, and he has done the score for Dune. And it’s almost not what you’d think. It’s totally appropriate and excellent for the movie, but he has somehow managed to do something subversive, in my opinion. It’s a pinch-me moment all over.

DEADLINE: So, take me back to the start. Is it true you had a Google alert set up to track the latest news on this project before you were ever cast?

CHALAMET: Yeah, it’s true [laughs]. Not right away—Legendary had the rights and was developing it—but as soon as Denis got involved, I set up a Google alert and that’s when I got the book.

In total honesty, I think my understanding of Dune at that point was from a graphic novel I’d seen at Midtown Comics when I was shopping for Yu-Gi-Oh! cards when I was about 10. The year you and I first met, when I was there at Deadline Contenders with Call Me by Your Name, that would have been 2017 or early 2018, and Denis was there with Blade Runner. I remember I was trying to put myself in front of him as much as possible and set up a meeting with him. We had a night at the BAFTA where one of my good friends, Stéphane Bak—who’s also an actor—saw Denis across the room and was like, “Hey buddy, he’s right over there.” So, we went over to talk to him. I kept trying to put myself in front of him, but I didn’t really get a sense of the possibility [of working with him].

I was about halfway through the book when I got the call that he was going to be the president of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival, and I was in London prepping The King. He asked me if I could come out there, so I quickly busted through the second half of the book as best I could. So, like, the first half of my copy is properly annotated and full of my thoughts, and then the second half I just raced through. And then I had that meeting with him, and it was such a joy.

I’m struggling with this even now, as I’m working with Paul King [on Wonka], because he’s another guy I have huge respect and admiration for, and it’s hard to feel on a level. Not that you ever are, because as an actor you’re a cog in the machine, and you’ve got to be humble to the vision of the director. But with Denis, he was pacing around the room, throwing ideas around, in some fancy suite in Cannes, and all I could think was that a year before I was just sat on a stoop on 9th Street in the East Village or something.

DEADLINE: Was that your first time in Cannes?

CHALAMET: Yeah. Well, bizarrely, my sister would do dance camps growing up. Ballet intensive programs in a town called Mougins, which is nearby Cannes, so I spent a lot of time there growing up, but never during the festival, and not on the Riviera. To get to be there for the festival was just nuts. I went to see the Romain Gavras movie, I think, and it was just a huge joy.

I got attached [to the role in Dune] a couple of months after that, and it was nerve-wracking from the announcement, because like I said before, the fans of the book, and the fans of David Lynch version, the computer game, and everything, there’s so much love and strength of feeling. And so much of our pop culture and films and books have been derived from Dune, and all the philosophy the book. I’ve been shocked to learn how many people have a next-level connection to the book. I compare it to how our generation grew up with Harry Potter, and that one makes sense to me. But it’s cool to see with Dune also, when you actually sit down and read it… It’s not that it’s a quote-unquote “hard read” or anything, but it’s not made to be consumed easily, I think that’s fair to say.

So, I was grateful to be working on something of this size not only with Denis Villeneuve leading it, who between Polytechnique, Incendies and Prisoners had nailed the smaller indie film across languages, and then had nailed Arrival and Blade Runner, but who, in his own words, he didn’t feel he’d made his greatest film yet. But also, to be working with this cast. I don’t know if there’s some nightmare version of a film where a young lead is not supported by the rest of his cast, where every one of them had been the leads in their own huge projects. But on this, everyone was there to support, and I think it’s because we all wanted to be foot soldiers for Denis, and I think we understood the potential, based on the script by Eric Roth, Jon Spaihts and Denis, that this could be something really special.

DEADLINE: I don’t have a connection to Dune; this movie is really my first experience of the story. What strikes me is this is clearly an enormous universe—a broad canvas being painted with various families and factions and politics and mythos—but that ultimately it comes down to very elemental, human themes, and we feel them through this character you play, Paul Atreides. Did those themes help ground the experience for you?

CHALAMET: Yes, and I would give the credit entirely to Denis. He would constantly say on set that he had some opposing drumbeat or something. In my diminished intellectual standing, I didn’t understand it, but it was like some vision for the movie based on how biblical the book is that tries to tackle so much that it doesn’t tackle anything. I think he felt the need to be close to a character in it, and Paul is that guy in the book. He’s a character that is still in formation, like a lump of clay, which makes him a great figure for the audience to mirror off.

It speaks, I think, to Denis’ premonition and his directing ability that there were times when we’d move on from a shot or move on from a scene, and I swear, literally, we’d go back because Denis wanted to get something over my shoulder, or push in on my reaction, just to make sure [it stayed on Paul].

And again, it’s something where I’m pinching myself. I had the best time on Interstellar, and that was one of my favorite films I’ve ever worked on, but it was very much something where I was aware of when I had the opportunity to do real acting. And on a movie like Dune, again, one could think it would get lost in the scale and scope. But I felt every day like my plate was full.

DEADLINE: One of those themes is fear, and Paul must overcome his to become the person he needs to be. When you are number one on the call sheet on a project of this scale, and the cast list reads like an address book of Hollywood in the 21st century, and Legendary has injected hundreds of millions of dollars into this production, and it’s all falling on your shoulders, I have to imagine fear is a theme you can readily relate to.

CHALAMET: Oh yeah, and they can bleed into each other for sure—not to diminish the other work that goes in. It’s great when your life experience can inform the role. That’s not at all to say I’m on some crusade in the universe or anything, but definitely… And I had that same good fortune with The King I think. My life is not nearly as significant or as exciting as Paul or Prince Hal, but we all share an unwitting needle in the haystack feeling. On The King that feeling was because I was so new to having a career. On Dune it’s because of, as you say, just feeling the pressure of the hugeness of the project in all those different ways. Those things can absolutely inform each other.

And then there are the moments of glee that come, too, like seeing Jason Momoa running at you at a hundred miles an hour, or just getting to shoot the shit with Josh Brolin, or getting to do a scene with Oscar Isaac. I felt so supported, whether it was Rebecca Fergusson or Charlotte Rampling. When Zendaya came, it was a total breath of fresh air, and she’s one of my favorite parts of the movie. I just got really lucky, and I can’t wait to see them all in Venice.

Denis split the book in half, and the hope is a second movie will get a greenlight. That’d expand Zendaya’s role in the story.

CHALAMET: Definitely, Chani will play a huge role in the next film. I don’t know if there’s a script yet, but just based on the book, along with Lady Jessica [Rebecca Fergusson], they have a lot to do together, let’s put it like that. And Zendaya was incredible in this movie; the moment she pulls the mask down, it felt properly showstopping and powerful. I was hiding behind the camera, counting my lucky starts, because I was there in month two of the shoot and here was a total powerhouse just coming in for the first time.

And as I said before, this was before I’d seen Euphoria and Malcolm & Marie. She’s doing such incredible work and is just trailblazing her own path, and she’s so, so cool. She also happens to be in the most-watched trailer of the moment, too, for Spider-Man: No Way Home. I cannot wait for that movie, and I was there, by the way, with everybody else, clicking through the trailer frame by frame looking for clues [laughs].

General Thoughts: I didn't watch anything for the first few days of March because I was very much in a Bad Buddy fic reading/show rewatching/Ohmnanon mood. Glad I got my Bad Buddy fix out of the way before starting this because otherwise I would've 100% just been thinking bout how I'd rather be watching BBS. It started off very meh for me but got better as it went along because I was invested in the conflict between the friends, more than I thought I would be. None of the characters or storylines really captured me, so I doubt I'll be thinking of this again but it was a fine watch just for the sake of watching. I wish it had Korean subs on Viki though, seeing as Korean practice was my main reason for watching and I hardly got that lol

Made me miss Bad Buddy where the characters are fully realized and stays true to themselves and although not every single loose thread is always tied up or followed through with, there was nothing so glaring. The father son interactions were great though.

General Thoughts: Created by some university students, so it has a certain amateur charm to it. I liked hearing Bol4 playing in the cafe lol. Well done on the second-hand embarrassment scene, it was awkward and embarrassing without being over the top. I hope the cheerful server girl lives the best life and also has a girlfriend, she’s so endearing. Anyway, cute concept, endearing story, made use of its short runtime; won’t leave any impact on me though and I didn’t really expect it to.

General Thoughts: Probably the best of what I’ve watched this month thus far but that isn’t saying much at all. I keep watching these bad-mediocre shows hoping for Korean practice but I’m barely getting much practice I feel like lol. Unique premise, wish they’d actually solved the mystery they set up from the very beginning, didn’t like Yoo Han the love interest’s acting and so the romance felt stilted as well, liked the main character Yeon Woo. Probably gonna read a summary and some opinions on Colour Rush Season 2 but not actually watch it.

General Thoughts: This was supposed to be just thoughts but turned into a full reaction thing lol.

I don’t really watch old shows or movies (especially not queer ones... sad endings galore), so this was new for me. Had to search up whether this had a happy ending beforehand.

Many BLs fall into either: choose to not focus on homophobia at all or have a very homophobic family as an obstacle. This one is interesting because it is definitely set in a homophobic society and they have to navigate that but it’s not a tragic story due to it; there’s still hope and happiness in the midst of all the homophobia. It kind of reminds me of Aof’s works like He’s Coming to Me or Dark Blue Kiss, where homophobia is a thing but we get to see happiness and acceptance in that.

The lady from the bus glancing away because she’s realized Seok Yi likes men was heartbreaking but it was followed by the funny scene with them lying down with the mom with face masks on; I liked the juxtaposition and the tone shift was natural.

How are they so daring?! Minsu kissing Seok Yi’s cheek while his mom is sleeping literally 2 feet away, they have Me stressed. Scratch that, Minsu’s unbuttoning Seok Yi’s shirt ??!?!?! And tryna give each other handies??!?! Where are your self-preservation skills. Anyway, at least they didn’t get found out there.

It’s funny how incredibly tame and chaste the recent kBL webdramas are but then you have this 30 minute thing or Long Time No See which are quite explicit? Like this is startlingly explicit, I wasn’t expecting it

Oh... my god, the mom. i let out a guttural scream.

the woman from the bus crying because her long term boyfriend who she loves is gay and being like “today, i hate being a woman” and Seok Yi being like “i hate being a man” because of the homophobia and me sitting there like wow gender

This song to his mom... everything to me. The apology for being this way and disappointing his mom but still being like well, even though I’m sorry, I’ll still continue to like men. It’s not like the “well, idgaf what you say or who you are i’ll cut you off and live my life” because I can’t identify with that nor want that but rather a quieter defiance where it’s like “I know this isn’t what you wanted from me and I’m sorry but I’ll continue to be me” that I wish I was more like.

Anyway, this turned out quite long but all in all, quite enjoyed it. Very much wish I could see it in with better quality because this was like watching it through a potato; alas, I can’t afford that right now.

Okay this is a lie, these aren’t GL clips. They’re just clips from Korean shows where, if they were brave or loved me, they would’ve given us GL. Then the Rokhee/Jina storyline, though we didn’t get to see much of their interactions in this cut. Anyway in my head they’re all sapphic and have feelings for each other.

Yuna x Nari | The World Of My 17: You’re telling me they aren’t dating? That they don’t have feelings for each other? That Yuna isn’t madly in love with Nari and hasn’t been for years? asldkfjaslkdfj I’ve sat through so many m/m and m/f shows with the controlling, toxic male pursuer ummmmm what about this codependent, controlling female pursuer huh ! lmao

General Thoughts: Thoroughly enjoyed it! Very strong characterization for the two main characters, as well as Yuna (love that she’s sapphic) and Ji Hye. The progression of the story and Sang Woo and Jae Young's relationship made sense. The acting was good, as well. It was clear that the creators had talent, budget and thought all poured into this project. Episode 7 was my favourite; wish the last episode didn’t have 20 minutes of unnecessary angst and separation so that we could enjoy them together instead but oh, well, I guess. Tied with Light On Me for favourite kBL and definitely one of my favourite BLs in general. Would love a season 2 but it’d be like 2+ years later if it ever happens and who knows if I’d even be this into watching shows then since I flit from fandom to fandom.

General Thoughts: A bit nervous starting this because I enjoyed Semantic Error so much and obviously the budget and team behind that one is so much bigger than this short but this short and sweet thing definitely held its own. Very charming.

Pt 1: As I’ve mentioned many times in the Semantic Error Live Blogging post, I am but a lover of honorifics and formalities, so Min Gyu calling Jae Sung hyung constantly and then the consequences of calling him ya! once is very great and lovely to me. Min Gyu calls him hyung but uses the lowest form of formality (no -yo endings) and I think that’s how most friends speak (from my kpop knowledge lol) so it was interesting that in Semantic Error Sang Woo kept the -yo endings with Jae Young even when they were dating. Anyway, it was so cute T.T I understood about 75% because I was watching with korean subs and then switching to french subs if I didn’t understand but I’ll rewatch with eng subs after watching pt 2 to better understand.

Pt 2: I understood like only 40% of the stuff being said since I didn’t get to pause to understand the meaning because I wanted to finish watching before a meeting lol but regardless it’s just so Cute !! and endearing !! I love established relationships and ease and comfort and teasing and long standing friendships and just T.T The teasing during the intimate scene was also very endearing. Time to rewatch with English subs!

Overall, it’s so short (less than 15 minutes total) but I’m impressed by how they’ve managed to create the story, characters and relationship around the time constraints.

Note: I’d been planning to watch Not Me after finishing Semantic Error but I just don’t think I can? First of all, it’s 14 episodes and if I’m not able to limit myself to 1-2 episodes a day, I’ll be screwed since I have so many school deadlines. Second, I don’t think I can follow up a really good BL with another what I’m hoping is a really good BL lol. After Bad Buddy, I watched many kinda bad - mediocre - good BLs and when I finally watched Semantic Error (a great BL), I could actually get attached to the story and characters because I wasn’t hung up on Bad Buddy or Pat/Pran. So I guess... I’ll get a few more shorter, possibly mediocre, shows off my backlist before I try Not Me? I’m just impressed by the fact that I haven’t really been spoiled for Not Me yet beyond just knowing some basic plot points, so I hope that continues even after the last episode is out.

General Thoughts: Very mediocre, which I expected but it started out more endearing than I thought (+ I saw a gifset of the ending scene so in my head it was OT3 from the start, + someone ranked it 2nd favourite kBL), so I was hoping I would like it more. If a show is mostly slice of life, you have to care about the characters but I didn't care. If it's high concept, the plot and narrative have to be strong but they weren't. Also, I wish they had fewer crying/emotional scenes because I don't think any of the actors can naturally pull it off. Nothing was terribly wrong but nothing was very good, either. Doubt I'll think about this again.

General Thoughts: Did not enjoy it until I did, lol. I wish the first 4 episodes didn’t have so much noncon/dubcon from Tharn to Type but I went into it knowing that it well, so I just skipped a lot of it. I also thought everything was so awkward at first but the interactions between Tharn and Type did gradually get better and were cute at time as the show progressed and they started dating. I wish the actors were better at acting because there were so many heavy, emotional, intense scenes.

Don’t think I’ll watch Season 2 because people don’t tend to like it but will watch the specials.

General Thoughts: Sure, cute, whatever. I wish it didn’t spend any time with Lhong because what. Domesticity is my favourite thing ever, so it delivered on that front, even though other parts were irritating. Made me think about how I feel about the husband/wife trope (in the live blogging).

General Thoughts: The writing and timeline and flow of scenes were weird. Weak in terms of coherency. I liked the acting enough and thought the honesty and earnestness of the story pulled through even though the writing had other weak points. Paper and Tong Fah started off fairly strong for me with the best friend dynamics, the tenderness, the heartbreak of rejection but then got very meh and boring once Tong Fah landed in the hospital. Chris and Jeno started off cute enough for me but then I started really liking them. The effects of Jeno being hounded by his abusive ex has on his general life (learning Muay Thai) and his outlook on relationships (not wanting to be hurt again, not wanting anything public) were briefly touched upon and I enjoyed that. Overall, I wasn't ever super invested but it wasn't like totally boring; it had weaknesses but strengths as well.

General Thoughts: I really liked it at the beginning (I liked Kaeng, I liked that they both slept around, I liked that the nsfw scenes weren’t awkward, I liked their chemistry/ease) but they dragged out the love triangle for too long. Puth and Puya had more cute moments than Kaeng and Puth did because KaengPuth mostly just had sexy moments. Them having nsfw scenes is fine because they started off being fuck buddies, after all, but the show didn't spend time developing their relationship outside of sex, so it falls a little flat. They definitely shouldn't have had Puth dating Puya for this long.

I like to divide up my shows by country for immersive purposes, since it’s easier to catch context and nuance if you’re watching the same country’s content back to back. The problem with that is I want the next country after I finish Cause You’re My Boy and start Cupid’s Last Wish is Japan BUT I’m really looking forward to Blueming now... so maybe Korean? Or might just take a little detour, watching only Blueming and veer into Japan? Anyway here’s my list for Japan

Kei x Yuko - I know it’s a bromance but I might enjoy it regardless because people said it’s domestic. I’ll just think of it as them dating.

A Man Who Defies the World of BL Season 1 and Season 2 - seems hilarious, short, free on Viki.

We Are Both The Grooms - I hope I’m able to find English subs for this because it seems like a blend of humour and more realism, looking forward to it.

Katieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Top ten productions in the last 5 years that you've seen?

KAT, STOP BEING MEAN TO ME. Honestly, I'm up to 60-odd productions, and narrowing this down was SO HARD. I peaked in 2018. Except that my NYC trip was in 2017, just a few months past five years ago, so Broadway Backwards and the OBC of Dear Evan Hansen don't count.

That said, here's where we landed. Organized chronologically, to avoid having to pick one single favorite among the standouts. Yes, I am open to follow up questions, and let the record show that "favorite shows I've seen" and "favorite shows" aren't necessarily the same, though that venn diagram is pretty close to a circle.

Under a cut because the list is LONG and DETAILED.

Sweeney Todd – 8 April 2018 This was a local production, with Tally Sessions and Chris McCarrell from New York to play leading roles, and this theatre just always does really really great work. My dad and I made a whole little day of it, and they did a Q&A after, and it was SO GOOD (you’ll see this same theatre come up again later).

If/Then – 29 April 2018 Another local production, but not where I live. I drove up to see it with one of my friends. Black box theater (where the stage and the audience are level, so everything is super close up and intimate) is my favorite kind of theatre, and it was INCREDIBLE to sit front row, half a foot away from the action It’s been like four years and I still haven’t stopped thinking about how much I loved the set too.

Newsies– 8 July 2018, 19 July 2018 Listen, I just really like local theatre, OK?! My area did two productions of Newsies the same summer, but this one was technically first. All local talent, and SO MUCH OF IT. The guy who played Jack Kelly honestly had NO RIGHT to go as hard as he did. I remember genuinely wondering if he was going to take down part of the scaffolding with how hard he was rattling it during Santa Fe. So good I had to go back and see it a second time.

Last Days of Summer – 14 September 2018 Remember that local theatre from Sweeney Todd? WELL THEY DID IT AGAIN. A world premiere baseball/WWII musical, starring Corey Cott (one of my personal favorite people). The show was FANTASTIC, and they let the audience stay for the cast party, so I actually got to meet/hug him. Also, I was freshly 21, so this was the first time I drank, accidentally. That’s a helluva story, but off topic for this post.

Dear Evan Hansen – 25 September 2018 Opening night of the first national tour stop in Denver. Need I say more? OK, I can say more. Uhhhh … check the tag ‘Katie and Rach: Destination Denver’ for the video I made about the roadtrip to see this show, and the highlights post from the show itself (from back in the days when Rachel and I liveblogged our friendship like hooligans).

The Play That Goes Wrong – 7 April 2019 I mean, you know how I feel about the entire Goes Wrong franchise, and this was what started it all. I saw it on a bad day, but then sat there and laughed for two and a half hours. It was SO fantastic, and I’ve been chasing it down again ever since. This summer, maybe …

Who’s Your Baghdaddy – 27 September 2019 I saw this one on a last-minute whim with my mom – of all people – because it was the end of September and the show I had tickets for got postponed (yeah, yeah, we’re all very proud of JerJor for being in Supergirl again, but the timing could have been better). It was the only thing I could find on my day off work, so we bought a couple of tickets as I swore up and down that I had no idea what the show was about, so if it was horribly offensive, it wasn’t my fault. And then instead it was hilarious and awesome and absurd in the best way.

Bandstand – 19 December 2019 A post-WWII musical about a group of vets starting a band to win a competition. The tour cast was INCREDIBLE, and the show never doesn’t give me chills and sobs. Bonus funny story: the community college that hosted the tour stop did a Q&A about the show and the history surrounding it before curtain call, and the professor running that totally spoiled the whole ending. At least I already knew how it went?

An Evening With Jeremy Jordan – 26 August 2021 OK, this is the one that was supposed to be September 2019. Three more delays (JerJor was in Little Shop of Horrors, COVID, COVID) and two venue changes (same local theatre, but it turns out they have more stages than I thought, and we ended up in a tiny event space upstairs from the upstairs. On the list for favorite venue, in terms of being beautiful and intimate and just perfect for the show they put on) later, it was my first indoor show post-pandemic, and it BLEW ME AWAY. Laughed, cried, lived, loved, all of it. A perfect, triumphant return.
