Winter: Alright, And now they break apart and mother- Mother's going in with them.

Blake: Like I said, they're fucking.

Weiss: I mean not necessarily. she could just be visiting-

Whitley: *On his scroll* It's a love hotel.

Winter: How do you-

Whitley: *Showing his scroll to her* It's a love hotel.

Winter: ...

Winter: *Clicks tongue* Well, I hope she's alright.

Blake: Oh she'll be alright~

Weiss: Okay, YOU REALIZE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOUR PARENTS TOO?

Blake: Menagerie's a lot less uptight about sexual relations - we have the lowest "Messy" divorce and STD Transfer rates in all of Remnant. I don't think about what parents do, but I am cognizant of it.

Whitley: She's right.

Weiss: How do you know that-

Whitley: Looked it up. I decided to look over all public knowledge of the Belladonna family, and Menagerian cultures and beliefs. Mother just wanted me nearby in case something went wrong so I could support her. She'll be fine.

Winter: Why you? Me and Weiss are strong-

Whitley: Yes, you r both strong, while *I* have nothing but my charisma. You'd both make a scene, while I can calm them down - better than either of you, at least.

Winter: Well-

Weiss: No, no, he has a point.

Winter: *Disgruntled Huff*

Kali: Well, if they want to walk in on something~

Ghira: We'd be more than happy to teach them not to pry into 'Private' Matters~

Willow: O-oh! You've been serious?

Blake Belladonna's Design

This is a quick appreciation of our Cat Girl's design. Its objective is to offer a short analysis by incorporating elements of other metas. Ideally, the end result will be something similar to Yang's post. Finally, this is the final piece of my mid-summer Blake meta spree :) So, enjoy!

JUST ANOTHER CAT GIRL?

Blake's design plays with the idea of "cat girl". Cat girls are common in anime and mangas, but are often overly sexualized. In particular, cat ears are usually presented as an overly cute trait and sometimes a fetish.

RWBY takes this idea and subverts it in 2 ways.

Blake's ears are initially hidden, so that her affinity with cats gets highlighted through other aesthetical elements:

Gambol Shroud's ribbon resembles a cat's tail and it being a whip may reference the infamous cat o' nine tails

She decorates her eyes with cat eye makeup

She is able to make copies of herself, which get jokingly referred to as copycats

In Mistral she wears leg boots, which bring to mind Puss in Boots

In Atlas she wears a catsuit

Blake's cat trait becomes a core part of her identity, which is explored on a double level:

It represents her faunus heritage, which makes her different from humans and discriminated

It is a symbol of Blake's troubled past and of her involvement with the White Fang

So, Blake covers her cat ears to run from both society and herself. Just like a scaredy cat ;)

As you see, with some limitations and worldbuilding, Blake manages to be a cat girl with much depth to her. Still, there is more to her cat design.

FROM CALICO TO TUXEDO

Let's juxtapose Blake's initial concept art with her final design:

What changes is the cat used as the main inspiration.

In the initial concept art it is the calico cat (tricolor cat):

In the final character design it is the tuxedo cat (bicolor cat):

Why the change? Let's explain it by highlighting one similarity (1) and one difference (2) between the two kitties.

1- Both cats are called after a type of cloth:

Calico is a fabric, which originates in India (the set of the Jungle Book - Blake's secondary allusion) and is famous for its colorful printed patterns. I wouldn't be surprised if Blake's clothes in the concept art were meant to be calico made.

Tuxedo is a formal wear, which consists of a black suit over a white shirt and a bow tie. Well, Blake's final design is a revisitation of the traditional tuxedo with a shorter jacket and a bow worn in the hair, instead than as a tie.

The idea of "cloth" is heavily used in Blake's design, which may be one of the reasons why the tuxedo is eventually chosen. This kitty, thus, offers a pretty poignant metaphor.

It all starts with Gambol Shroud, where shroud means a piece of cloth that conceals or protects:

Here come two thoughts:

Blake's bow is her shroud which is why it resembles her weapon’s ribbon (same color and similar material). The bow is the ears, while the ribbon is the tail. Together they complement Blake’s cat design.

Some tuxedo cats are called tuxedo masks because it is as if a black mask covers their whole faces. It is easy to see how this concept fits Blake, who conceals herself thanks to a little piece of fabric.

Basically, Blakes's bow is her tuxedo tie, which is worn as a mask.

2- The two cats differ when it comes to their color:

The calico is a tricolor cat, which is mostly known as having a white coat with some orange and black patches

The tuxedo is a bicolor cat, which has white and black fur

These two color patterns are another reason why Blake has been characterized as a tuxedo instead than a calico. As a matter of fact the black and white dychotomy fits our beautiful faunus girl more.

WHITE AND BLACK = BEAUTY AND BEAST

In old English, Blake's name means both black and white. As a result, she is linked to both colors, which tie with her light and shadow motif:

Blake is associated to the twilight because it is where light and shadow meet. What's more, her musical theme is built on this duality. She starts in the shadows and climbs her way up towards the light.

Well, Light and Shadow are linked to two Jungian Archetypes:

The Light is the persona, so what is shown to others

The Shadow is what is repressed, so the hidden parts

And these two archetypes are explored in The Beauty and The Beast:

The Beauty is the light - she is beautiful, lovable and accepted

The Beast is the shadow - he is ferocious, scary and misunderstood

So, Blake's own allusion can be read as the integration of beauty and beast, light and shadow, so that a new unit (a new individual) is born. This is also Blake's arc in a nutshell. She starts as a shadow because she hides herself, but with time she steps into the light and shows the world who she is.

In other words, Blake's Beauty and Beast allusion is referenced in her appearence not only in her nature as a faunus, but in her color scheme too. She is both beauty and beast, light and shadow, white and black.

This is also why these two colors are incorporated in respectively Sun and Ilia.

Sun is white, as he leads Blake towards the light:

Ilia is black, as she forces Blake to face her own shadows:

Through them Blake integrates her shadows and stops hiding:

This is why her design changes in Mistral in two notables ways:

She gives up her bow once and for all

She wears a white jacket over a black top

These two details mirror Blake's inner journey. She learns to show herself more, so her ears get to be out in the open and the light (white) surfaces. In Beacon, instead, the ears are concealed and Blake is wrapped in shadows (black).

Ironically, this means Blake's design loses the core traits of her tuxedo cat inspiration. As a matter of fact she has no bow tie anymore and the color pattern is inverted, which doesn't work. Why this choice? It is because Blake is going from Beast (black + cat) to Beauty (white + individual). Symbolically, this happens as she shows her faunus trait more openly:

She grows more beautiful (human) as she openly embraces her beast side (cat).

GOLD, BLUE AND PURPLE = HOT, COLD AND JUST RIGHT

The shift from calico to tuxedo brings some consequences to Blake and Yang's complementary designs.

Let's compare the bees exploratory ideas:

As people have noticed, Blake and Yang are aesthetically and symbolically linked since early on.

Here, we have:

Blake with one gold eye and one blue eye

Yang with a blue bandana

This chromatic choice ties into Yang's allusion and design. As a matter of fact our Goldilocks uses colors to represent the too hot, too cold and just right. Specifically:

red/orange is the too hot

blue/green is the too cold

purple (blue + red) is the just right

So, in the picture above Yang's looks play with the dychotomy between too hot and too cold. This same duality is mirrored in Blake:

She is both too hot (gold eye) and too cold (blue eye)

She wears much gold in general (Yang's main color)

The idea is clear. Blake is Yang's hot and cold. In particular, she brings some needed blue in Yang's life. She helps Goldilocks cool down and become more balanced. Similarly, Blake proudly wears Yang's golden tones, as she has to grow more like her Golden Beauty.

So, how have these ideas evolved in Blake’s final design?

Blake has gained a strong association with purple, which makes her Yang's just right

Blake's color scheme has ditched gold in favor of silver, which makes her and Yang complementary

Blake's link to purple is interesting because this color calls back to her family and to the surname Belladonna (beautiful woman in Italian). In other words, it is connected to both Ghira's legacy and her Beauty side. So, it is not a surprise that Blake grows more purple in each arc:

She is slowly blooming into Yang's just right by reconciling with her legacy and by becoming a person worthy of our golden girl.

This transformation is highlighted also by Blake integrating some gold into her:

In both her Vale and Atlas's designs Blake is linked to silver, so that she can complete Yang's gold. Still, in Mistral she has some gold details because this is the arc where she integrates her missing parts. This integration ends with Adam's death and Blake's rebirth:

So, Blake's design tells a story of inner growth, which leads her to stand beside Yang as an equal:

Blake: She's not protecting me, Adam. And I'm not protecting her. We're protecting each other.

This theme is important for Blake's Cat Girl archetype. Cat Girls, thus, are often reduced to love interests, but Blake's arc is a deconstruction of this idea. What would happen if the male partner of a Cat Girl is abusive? Blake explores this concept and tells a story of liberation and development, which ends with a reconstruction of the trope. Our Cat Girl ends up in a happy relationship, but not as a shallow prize. Rather as a winner.

BEASTS, LIONS AND WOLVES

In conclusion, Blake's design alludes to the Beauty and Beast on three levels:

Society= Blake is both human (beauty) and animal (beast)

Couple = Blake and Yang are drawn as complementary

Individual = Blake is both white (light) and black (shadow)

Still, this is not the only fairy tale our Cat Girl ties into thanks to her animal features. Here come three examples.

Blake is Bagheera's daughter and a small panther (a cat) in the Jungle Book

Blake is a Scaredy Cat to Lioneheart's Cowardly Lion. Except that of course the cat is braver than the lion

Blake is Ruby's black beast in team RWBY's LRRH team allusion

This last reference is foreshadowed since Red Like Roses:

Black the beast descends from shadows.

After all, the Beowolves appear when Blake's line comes up.

Moreover, Blake's secondary allusions all come together to strongly link our Black Shadow to wolves. In the Jungle Book, Mowgli is raised by wolves, just like Blake grows up in the White Fang. The name of the group itself calls back to wolves, as it references the title of Jack London's book about a half-dog half-wolf, who fights to be accepted by humans.

Finally, it turns out Blake is not the only Cat, who turns out to be a Wolf:

In short, Blake's design lets her freely move between allusions and references. Not only that, but it is crafted to add depth and thematic resonance to her character and her arc. Not bad for just another Cat Girl, uh?

RWBY Rework Blake Belladonna

Black the beast who descends from shadow is supposedly both the Beauty and the Beast but I feel like other than being a cat girl it never comes through in her design. In her more recent appearances, she’s strayed from being black and has taken over Weiss’s spot as white, which is very annoying. So I went back to the source and looked at some of her concept art for inspiration. I found myself adoring her mismatched eyes, so I stole that for my design. I also liked the cutesy dress she was in, though I do like the slimmed down final of her v1 look. 

I think a big issue with her design is that Menagerie has no defined aesthetic. Blake’s kind of like a ninja, but has this gothic lolita type thing going on too, so I decided to design Blake and then design Menagerie around that – which turned Menagerie into a fairy tale island full of magical human/animal hybrids that has different areas based on specific animals – which I’ll expand on later. Blake took on a frillier look, but I made sure she didn’t step on Weiss’s toes because in this rewrite I’m bringing the fact that Blake is a princess into this, which is another play in my decision to make her and Weiss partners. Blake is a princess in hiding, the daughter if the dead king of the Eastern region of Menagerie after an attack from the White Fang (which have been overhauled). So when she returns to Menagerie she’s got nowhere to turn to and is instead trying to regain control of her house that was stolen from her. 

I’ve played up the beast aspect of her, making her a sort of chimera faunus. (in this rewrite, Faunus can have a variety of traits and actually look part animal) While this would be harder to hide, I’ve come up with ways she did it – Her ears/the bow, her horns/her hair + filing them down (painful but effective), the tail/tucked very uncomfortably in her tight clothes. Essentially, she was hurting herself to try and hide her faunus traits, something that will play into her character – she is willing to suffer just to avoid conflict. Also i took away her human ears i hate that design choice.

Her outfit is modeled after a tuxedo cat and this adorable fit I saw on Pinterest once. I’ve also taken to Twiins iink’s idea and taken away long sleeves, which gave room for some cute gloves. Her hair is long again because that mop cut is grotesque in both her concept art and in the show. I gave her a braid though, simply because I want a lot of flowing parts on this with her tail and hair and ribbons and it looked super cute on her amity arena summer skin. 

i think it might just be a little too similar to her og design, so I'll tweak it a little more after i finish Weiss and Ruby, in a whole team spread with their final designs

Also Adam is the rose with hints of the fairy and Salem is the fairy (in this Salem takes the place of a lot of Fairies and Evil Witches)

on one hand I really wish we had a solo Blake song at some point but on the other hand she’s been set up as part of a duality or pair since the Black trailer

Every single Blake song we’ve had (From Shadows, Like Morning Follows Night, This Time, Nevermore) is a duet. She’s both Beauty and Beast and human and cat. Her original designs were all black and white working together. She uses a dual blade weapon. At first she was partners with Adam but ended up being partners with Yang (on top of that she’s been set up as part of a Sun/Moon and light vs dark pairing a couple of times, both with Yang and Sun). She’s the one to help Nora realise that her whole existence doesn’t mean Ren, and that he’s only a part of her that she can balance out and exist as herself within. Hell her and Yang are set up to contrast each other with their Haven and Atlas designs (yellow and purple being complimentary colours). Belladonna (nightshade) is known for both its beauty and deadliness. She’s her own character but also part of a duality on quite a few levels and it’s pretty much inseparable from her.

But now that she’s at Beacon, she just might be able to have the friends she’s desired for so long. And yet, there’s more to this young maiden than meets the eye. Her favorite foods are strawberries and chocolate chip cookies.

Because of this, she’s hesitant to become close to anyone, but that quickly dissipates once she joins team RWBY at Beacon Academy. Yang Xiao Long Age: 18 Pronouns: She/Her Gender: Cis woman Sexuality: Pansexual, leaning towards girls but there’s some guys that have caught her eye Race: Human Weapon: Ember Celica Semblance: Burn Allusion: Goldilocks Yang is the overprotective half-sister of Ruby, but she tries to rein it in so as not to suffocate her. If RWBY had Pokemon - Team RWBY

When choosing Pokemon I’ve gone off aesthetics, personality, lore, but most importantly: vibes. 

Blake Belladonna

Meowscarada - cat! Has the same ears as Blake. I imagine Sprigatito was her starter Pokémon.

Umbreon - it's the vibes ok. Not because it's a dark pokemon but because it's Blake's signature colour, black.

Gothorita - I'm relating her to very early season Blake where she was more secretive and wore more black.

Venonat - now, I know it doesn't necessarily scream Blake, but I've always thought this lil critter was pretty cute and it would be cute sitting in Blake's lap. It's still a poison type though so I imagine it would give a lil warning if someone was annoying it/Blake. Also, purple!

Gengar - the shadow Pokémon, and Blake's semblance is called shadow. It's also purple so goes with the aesthetics. I also wanted a ghost type to hark back to the "ghosts of Blake's past" so to speak, i.e. to reference her past and the effects it's had on her.

Attire:Baggy black shorts that go to his shins and are covered with pockets as well as a silver chain dangling from the left belt loop. Sleeveless black compression shirt that proudly displays Blake’s symbol in dark purple on the front. Dark red detachable sleeves cover his forearms and meet black leather fingerless gloves. His high top boots pop with purple soles and laces. Lastly, a black hooded cape that has a red petal design flowing up the back until it forms Ruby’s symbol in the middle. The hood has holes for his cat ears and a fabric mask he can use to only show his eyes and above if needed.

Weapon:Memento- two bracelets infused with light dust and four charms on each one. Each charm is a tiny weapon carved from metal that resembles those wielded by RWBY and JNPR. He also carries a short katana on his lower back.

Aura:It’s gray and moderate in capacity.

Semblance: Shadows Stray- Levi has the ability to interact with shadows by using his to inflict real damage and manipulate things around him. He’s also able to grab the shadows of inanimate objects as well as his own, and pull them into 3D space.

Goal: No lofty ambitions other than validating his own ambitions and ideals.

Bio: The youthful child of Ruby and Blake. While the 15 year old is skilled for his age, he has yet to abandon naive and immature notions that won’t serve him in his quest for self improvement. That being said, anyone who’s ever asked him for assistance regarding urgent matters were pleasantly surprised to see his level of commitment. If only Levi could understand that if he wants to be like the ninjas he reads about, then he should learn the value of leaving a job well done in silence.

Ruby Rose (Human Ranger/Rogue) Born the daughter of a rather well-known adventurer, Ruby was raised on the stories and legends of her mother’s many incredible feats. She was inspired to become a great monster hunter herself, setting off at a young age to prove herself to be worthy to stand in her mother’s shadow. Her idealistic view of the world begins to break down, though, when she learns of the cult that her mother had fought against, and the twisted being that may have been behind her death.

Weiss Schnee (Half-Elf Lore Bard) After years of being treated like a priceless china doll that had to be absolutely perfect, Weiss bucked the expectations of her father and traditions of her mother. Drawn to music and the way that it can bend the very weave of the world around her, Weiss began studying the Bardic arts, and set off once she’d learned enough to stand on her own. She follows in the footsteps of her older sister, blazing a trail for herself in the wild world, and looking to master her craft.

Blake Belladonna (Cat Faunus Assassin Rogue) Blake’s journey has been a complicated one. Once a proud freedom fighter standing up against the bigotry and abuse of her people, the world beat her down until she learned to harden her heart, abandon her morals, in the name of what’s right…until she realized that what she’d given those up for was nothing but a group intent on destruction. Snapping to her senses, she now sticks to shadows, trying to do good to atone for the wickedness she’d assisted.

Yang Xiao-Long (Human Barbarian/Monk) The older sister of the idealistic Ruby, Yang views the world like one big party, and her the star of the show. After her own mother walked out on the family, and Ruby’s mother passed away, Yang grew up with a cavalier and devil-may-care attitude about the world, people she doesn’t know, and herself from time to time. Still, she is driven by one goal—the intent to track down her no-good mother and give her the ass-kicking of a lifetime for walking out on her and her father.

Jaune/Jeanne Arc (Human War Cleric) Coming from a long line of proud and honorable knights, Jaune has lived his life with an incredible weight resting on his shoulders—especially considering the fact that he shows no talent for combat himself. Still, that didn’t stop him from setting out on a quest of his own, intent to do right by the Arc family name, and attempt to fill the role of the next Arc family knight. If only he wasn’t so much better as a cleric than he was at playing paladin…

Nora Valkyrie (Dwarf Storm Herald Barbarian) Life was never easy for Nora growing up—a fact that is hard to believe when you see the absolute bright and beaming optimism with which she sees the world. Nora grew up to never take a loss lying down—she bounces right back onto her feet with a smile every time, and laughs as she turns around and gives life all the hell it tried to give her first. Life’s too short to sweat the small stuff, after all, and she’s much too excited to see what else the world can give.

Pyrrha Nikos (Human Champion Fighter) For years, Pyrrha has been the rising star of the arena fighting pits, a gladiator like no other—the Invincible Girl, some had come to call her. Her skill in combat was unmatched, and she easily bested opponent after opponent…but they were all hollow victories. Her destiny called her elsewhere—out, into the real world, into the wild frontiers of the land, to truly challenge herself. There, she would face the forces against which she could truly call herself a champion.

Lie Ren/Rin (Half-Elf Shadow Monk) As a child, Ren saw his parents murdered before his very eyes, the town he came from ransacked by horrible monsters and beasts. For years, he trained in silence, in isolation—save for the ginger dwarf who insisted on staying by his side. For years, he trained, to become the sort of warrior that could defeat those monsters. Over the years, rage tempered into control, into a calm, honed blade, and he set out into a world steady and ready for whatever it threw at him.

Coco Adel (Human Artillerist Artificer) Coming from a life of wealth and comfort was decent enough for Coco, but from a young childhood she knew she wanted more from life. She had a bright, sharp mind—a mind for inventing and creating incredible inventions, and the moment that she was able to, she set off to study under the best gnome artificers in the kingdom. She has since set out to test her inventions out on the unsuspecting world—all while looking utterly flawless, too, she might add.

Velvet Scarletina (Bunny Faunus Kensei Monk) Though meek and quiet, Velvet is not one without a means of defending herself—her father was one of the townsguard in her village, and she would often watch him and tag along as he protected the walls of their home. When she grew old enough, he taught her in every weapon he knew—and the weapons he didn’t know, she taught herself. She became an expert in every weapon possible, with the pure intent to protect the people that she knows and loves.

Sun Wukong (Monkey Faunus Sun Soul Monk) A charming rapscallion, Sun Wukong is little more than a traveling nuisance to most people who cross his path—his business is in adventure, but his pleasure is in pranks, and messing with people who need a good reminder to stop being so serious. He lives life for himself, seeing all the world that he can, with the eager anticipation to meet back up with his own father one day and share all that he’s seen with him.

Penny Polendina (Warforged Artillerist Artificer) There are few people in this world with as much joy and delight in the simple wonders of the world as Penny. Though, when you are an artificial being who is barely more than a year old, it is easy to find oneself in awe of everything around them. Despite appearing mostly human, Penny is delighted by the pursuit of humanity—of learning what it means to be human, and find her purpose that is uniquely her own in the world.

Summer Rose (Human Hunter Ranger) The mother of Ruby Rose, Summer was every bit the skilled and powerful huntress her daughter remembered her to be. Bright and warm, kind and honest, a bit of a goofball at times, but serious when the moment called for it. She spent her life defending the world from forces of darkness too terrible to describe, but when the chance to settle down came…she felt there was still more to do. Just one last mission, she’d told herself. One last mission, and then I can rest.

Taiyang Xiao-Long (NPC, Human Open Hand Monk) Once a member of a proud adventuring party, Taiyang has learned to take life slow and to savor the soft and gentle things. Kind and gentle, he serves as a protector for the small town he and his companions settled down in—the town where they first met up in and saved years ago. Despite the bright smile and a cheerful personality, there is a quiet grief behind his eyes—the kind a man can only have after losing not one, but two of the loves of your life.

Qrow Branwen (Human Beast Master Ranger) While Taiyang has settled down to a humble life in the town where they first met, Qrow never did rid himself of the wanderlust of his childhood, and continues to travel the wilds of the world in search of new adventurers. There are still monsters to slay, after all, and can he really trust the fate of the world to a bunch of kids? Besides, though he may try to deny it, a there is a small part of him that hopes that one of his treks will take him to his long-lost friend—not dead, just missing.

Raven Branwen (Human Rogue/Barbarian) The older twin sister of Qrow, Raven was always aloof and distant, focused on the mission at hand. She was often sent ahead to scout out the dangers they might face, and report back with the details. Perhaps her disappearance so suddenly was because the danger she found was too great, and she retreated back to her old life as a bandit. That’s certainly where one can find her now—Bandit Queen of the Shrieking Nighthawks, one of the most feared bandit packs in the region.

Winter Schnee (Half-Elf Devotion Paladin) While her younger sister devoted herself to the study of the Bardic arts and to ancient tomes, Winter had set off with a different pursuit in mind. Following in the footsteps of her grandfather—a proud and honorable knight—she devoted herself to the art of combat, and early in life set off to devote herself to the service of the kingdom her family lived in. She fights not for country, though, but for family—to improve her family’s name, and protect them best she can.

Willow Schnee (High Elf Noble NPC) Once the daughter of a kind and proud elven warrior, Willow has withered somewhat as the years have gone by—especially since she’s learned that the handsome young man that she fell for in her youth did so just to get access to her family’s wealth, and that he cared nothing for her. The high elven noble spends her days wasting away in her once lavish family manor, drinking her woes away and counting down the days to her human husband’s passing.

Jacques Schnee ne Gele (Human Noble NPC) A swindler and cheat all around, Jacques has succeeded in lying and cheating his way into a life of luxury and power. He is the current owner of the Schnee Trading Company which handles most imports and exports in the kingdom—a duty that should’ve gone to his wife, but a bit of sweet-talking and some under the table deals, and he’s secured it for himself instead. There is a bit of a problem regarding his choice in laborers, of course, but surely it will solve itself in time.

Ghira Belladonna (Cat Faunus Village Elder NPC) As the father of Blake Belladonna, Ghira cannot help but blame himself somewhat for the way his daughter’s life has gone. He was one of the founding heads of the organization known as the White Fang, and though it started as a peaceful organization, things quickly spiraled out of his hands, and he stepped down—an act his daughter called a betrayal. He continues to strive for equality when he’s not leading their village, and hoping for any news that his daughter is alright.

Kali Belladonna (Cat Faunus Entertainer NPC) After her daughter went missing, Kali fell into a bit of a depression herself—she had hoped that her daughter would come to her senses after a few days, years have passed, and she hasn’t seen her since. Glynda Goodwitch (High Elf Arcanist NPC) While forces of darkness and destruction spread strife through the kingdom, there must be someone who at the very least keeps the kingdom running—in Glynda’s case, that would be her. She devoted herself to the study of the arcane arts, learning to build and construct works of wonder with her near fathomless magic…yet now, she has been reduced to a political leader and council member, and the one doing all the work, as well.

James Ironwood (Half-Orc General NPC) While Glynda handles the internal affairs of the city, the imposing and powerful James Ironwood devotes himself to handling the protection and defense of their city and kingdom. Though appearing cold and dispassionate on the outside, James is a man of incredible kindness and gentleness, despite the firm hand with which he handles his forces. He is willing to make the hard sacrifices to succeed, though those sacrifices may break him in time.

Roman Torchwick (Human Criminal Mastermind Antagonist) While the protectors of the city try their best to keep their affairs in order, one certain individual thrives in the growing chaos. Roman Torchwick has built his business in the chaos of mundane life, sneaking away important shipments and selling off the wares for ridiculous prices. Occasionally, he’ll stage a major heist, but really, what he’s most interested in is ensuring that he will survive to see the next sunrise—because, gods, if that isn’t something beautiful to live for.

Neopolitan (Changeling Assassin Antagonist) Most frequently taking the form of a halfling with two-toned hair, the cute mute serves as the loyal lapdog of the criminal mastermind Roman Torchwick. Though not one for many words, her attitude speaks loud enough to make clear her every thought, and she isn’t shy of letting people know when she dislikes them, and just how affectionate she is of her darling Roman. Makes one wonder what might happen if she were to lose him…

Adam/Eve Taurus (Bull Faunus Battle Master Antagonist) When Ghira stepped down, and the direction of the White Fang took a more violent angle, Adam began to grow and relish in the destruction he wrought. Driven by rage and hatred for the people who had scorned him (and his people, but more importantly, him), he grew ever more bloodthirsty and intent on causing harm. His growing aggression pushed his former lover Blake away—though, of course, he lays all that blame at the feet of the humans he despises.

Cinder Fall (Human Warlock Antagonist) As a child, Cinder was at the mercy of a world that seemed to hate her—that spurned and scorned and abused her at every turn. BLAKE BELLADONNA

PHYSICAL

Average height. Lean. Narrow shoulders. Brown skin. Thick black hair. Eyes dark gold, with tapeta lucida. Angular. Full mouth, long nose, high cheekbones. Various minor combat scars on her arms and back from her time with the White Fang. Ears of a domestic house-cat, with black fur. Like many fauni with animal-like ears, Blake has distinctive musculature that is, while not visibly apparent, easily noticeable to the touch: her skull is slightly flatter an more oblong than that of the average human, and she has extra muscle groups that control the motion of her ears. If one were to touch the back or crown of her head, it would feel more like the chin or brow area—these muscles aren't very thick and they lie flat, but there is discernibly a layer of flesh that a human wouldn't have. Because of this, Blake is extremely particular about not letting people touch her head. (In fact, one of the first things she and Yang bonded over—however trivial it seemed—was shared hatred of other people touching their hair. Everyone on Team RWBY now knows the real reason Blake doesn't like people putting their hands near her head, but as far as anyone else from Beacon knows, she's just protective of her hair.) Blake's human-like ears are vestigial—she can't actually hear with them. This, too, is common among fauni who have "extra" ears.

STYLE

Tight-fitted clothing. She likes the feeling of compression. Jackets or coats with long tails. Black, white, shades of purple. Her emblem is a belladonna flower stylized to suggest flame.

GAMBOL SHROUD

Blake's weapon so defies easy description that she made up her own classification when she applied to Beacon, designating it a Variant Ballistic Chain Scythe. It began life as a comparatively simple semi-automatic pistol with a retractable claw-like dagger, which Blake later traded out for a backsword. Then she added a bladed edge to her sheath. Then she went through a brief but intense phase of hero-worshipping Sienna, which led to Blake obsessing over chain whips and rope darts for a while and, ultimately, to her addition of Gambol Shroud's "ribbon"—really a chain made of an ultra-light alloy, stitched loosely into a sleeve of elastic black fabric for better grip, but Blake thinks "ribbon" sounds cooler. One might feel inclined to ask: Why? Why all of this? Blake would answer: Why not?

AURA

Violet. In the White Fang, Blake received practical aura-training focused much more on engaging human adversaries than grimm. On the defensive side of things, she's much better at parrying and deflecting bullets than blocking fangs or claws—for example, Blake is nearly on par with the average maiden in terms of ability to just idly swat bullets away, but if she tried to stop a striking grimm with her bare hands like Ren does during initiation, she'd probably end up mauled. On the other end, Blake has a certain affinity for and a very high level of skill in using offensive auraleric techniques that most huntsmen consider to be marginal—because they aren't terribly effective against grimm. The grimm can be wounded by pure aura if the blast is strong enough, but it takes a lot of power and focus; conversely, hitting a trained auralerist with a focused burst of one's own aura is a quick-and-dirty way to end a fight by creating interference that disrupts the target's aura.

SEMBLANCE

Blake registered it with the name Shadow when she enrolled at Beacon: an instant line-of-sight teleport. It leaves behind a tangible afterimage, most often, a formless mirage-like violet haze. When she's very focused, or if she activates her semblance more slowly, this afterimage can become clearer, more lifelike, and even briefly tangible—not unlike the aura-constructs manifested by the Schnee semblance, or Sun's. She can also infuse the afterimage with dust to conjure statues of ice or stone, or explosive balls of fire. The way Blake thinks of her semblance when she comes to Beacon is warped by her self-hatred, and heavily influenced by Adam's disdainful outlook on evasion and subterfuge. With time, she leaves this critical perspective behind and gradually reclaims a fairer, more accurate, and healthier conception of Shadow as a power that allows her to reposition herself and take control of the battlefield.

PRINCIPAL ALLUSIONS

Beauty and the Beast –> Blake is the Beauty, though she left the White Fang feeling like a monster and certainly felt like the Beast for much of her time at Beacon and those first few months on Menagerie. Her Beast is divided between Adam, who embodies the violent, dangerous Beast the Beauty fears when she goes to sacrifice herself in her father's stead, and Yang, who shares many of the traits which drew Blake to Adam in the first place—passion, strength, bravery—but who, like the Beast in the tale, proves herself to be noble, kind, and good of heart under the surface. The Jungle Book –> Blake is Bagheera. RWBY plays a little shell game with the Jungle Book allusion; while the name Ghira is undoubtedly intended to bring Bagheera to mind, narratively, the power struggle between Sienna and Ghira over the White Fang quite plainly takes cues from the coup Shere Khan orchestrates against Akela, the leader of the Seeonee wolf pack; Ghira's pauldron features a wolf-head, and Kali's ears are those of an Indian wolf. He's the leader of the wolves, Blake is the black panther who, having been born among humans and escaped her cage to return to the jungle, understands both worlds, and Mowgli—much like the Beast—is divided between Adam, the dangerous boy whom no one can look in the eye, and Ilia, the child raised by wolves who cast her out for not being wolf enough.

PORTRAYAL NOTES

Blake was twelve years old when her parents left the White Fang and returned to Menagerie. They insisted upon her leaving with them; Blake pretended to accept this, even dutifully boarding the ship to Menagerie with them—but when the ship sailed past a small isle just off the coast a short while later, she hopped overboard, swam ashore, took the ferry back to the mainland, and ran straight back to the White Fang. From that day until she returned to Menagerie after the Fall of Beacon, Blake had no contact with them. Generally, I don't truck with the fanon conception of the Belladonnas as perfect parents meant to provide narrative contrast to the abusive Jacques Schnee and the complex dysfunction of the Rose-Xiao Long family. Much as they love Blake and do everything right once she comes home, they also did just about everything wrong when their twelve-year-old ran off to join a now expressly militant activist group, and I think Blake feels deeply hurt by those five years they let pass without trying to contact her. It's... not just because of Adam that she's scared they'll reject her when she finally comes home. After their departure, Adam, then fifteen, became her "mentor" in the sense that he was just a few years older than her and she thought he was unbearably cool, and tried to tag along with him as often as possible. When Blake was fourteen, she developed an outright crush, and they began dating about a year later. She left him, and the White Fang, only a few weeks before the spring term began at Beacon—several months after she submitted her application and received her acceptance. Blake had been planning her escape for quite a while before she ran. In the aftermath of all that, her opinion of the White Fang is very colored by Adam; she knew Sienna Khan as a friend and occasional rival of her father's, as a combat instructor, and as a leader with a fierce reputation, but she didn't have much of a personal relationship with the woman. Adam, however, did—Adam was Sienna's protégé—so when he assured Blake that Sienna knew and approved of how he ran the Vale chapter, she believed him. Bees. My personal headcanon is that Kali was a ringleaders of the revolt that snowballed into the Faunus Revolution, that she met Ghira months after the war ended and they had a whirlwind affair which resulted very shortly in Blake, the White Fang, and marriage. In that order. In interactions with her parents I'll defer to your headcanons, but those are my default presuppositions.
