《Gone And Never To Return》
Tumblr media
⚠️Angnst⚠️
Ellie Williams x Gender neutral reader
MENTIONS, cursing, blood, dying reader (turning), probably not correct timing-, sad Ellie and death
Angst, no happy ending
Erm- this is my first fanfic writing and I chose angsty stuff. All I ask, if this does get seen, Please don't judge. I'm just tying this out honestly.
Tumblr media
You and Ellie were sent out on a patrol, checking out places that have been showing more activity. Though there wasn't much going on, so you hadn't been paying as much attention as you should have been.
Instead you were making small talk with your girlfriend, talking about funny and dumb stories of life before the outbreak.
"Very quiet around here. Why did they send us out again?" You ask, doing a quick sweep around the snow covered forest. The powder covering the ground was bright, almost blinding if it wasn't for your eyes already being adjusted to it.
"Well.. Tommy was saying it was getting active around this area. But I'll admit, it's nice just being able to talk and ride out here" Ellie looked back at you, you smiled in return. She's not wrong, you two haven't been able to just talk in a few weeks now. Joel and Tommy have been sending Ellie on patrols left and right. While you don't have anything assigned to you, so you spend your free time helping around town. Both of you exhausted by the time you see each other again. So your guy's alone time has been very limited.
The wind around you guys started picking up, looking around you could clearly tell a snow storm was on its way. Seemingly quick too.
"Hey Ellie how far is a check point?" You slightly yelled because of the winds picking up quickly. You hear Ellie say something but it was muffled out with how far she was from you "Ellie! Wait for me!" You yell, speeding up to try and keep up. But you lost her and her horse tracks aren't staying very long.
After a few minutes of following tracks, till they disappeared completely because of the heavy snowfall. "Ellie! Where the hell are you!?" You yell turning you horse to go a different direction, you started moving forward when something had moved in the near bushes. You horse now spooked with how close and sudden it was, kicked back.
Your horse's sudden action caught you of guard and it flung you off, landing in the soft powdered snow. "Aw, fuck you!" You yelled flipping the horse off. It turned and started running off, "Wait no! Come back!" You yelled, regretting your choices. "Fuck.. ok, just try finding shelter." You told yourself as you started moving blindly though the storm.
As you moved through the snow and storm, you started to slow. You were shivering so much, it felt like your body was a moter.. without the heat. You heard slight clicking and groaning ahead so you grabed out your gun, incase infected decided to charge at you.
Focusing more on the sounds infront of you, you failed to noticed the two stalkers running straight for you. One had latched itself to your arm, clawing a trying to bite at you. While the other had slipped in the snow and still crawled towards you. Startled you shot at the one on your arm and stomped at the one on the ground, unfortunately you weren't thinking of the horde ahead you as you kept shooting at the one attached to you.
After killing the stalker you look up to see at least a dozen of runners, sprinting at you. Your neck started to sting, you ignored it as you shot at any runner getting to close for comfort. You shot over and over till your gun stopped, your ice cold fingers struggling to change the clip. A runner had grabbed onto you, whipping your knife out. You sliced its neck, blood splattered onto your face and clothes. More and more infected came at you, clearly outnumbered, but you weren't going down with out a fight.
Multiple gunshots whipped by you head, runners dropping like flies. Ellie had found you and immediately helped take care of the situation, 10- 15 minutes later, Ellie cleared out the rest of them. Bodies littered the ground, deep red blood dyed the snow around them and the clothes Ellie and you were wearing.
The stinging in your neck got worse, turning into a burn. You dropped to your knees, covering you neak that was leaking blood. When Ellie noticed the amount of blood on your arm and neck she rushed over, kneeling next to you. "Hey Y/N, its gonna be ok.. here let me see." she slowly moving your hand away. She nearly broke down, maybe even threw up right then and there. Your neck, covered in blood, was torn apart. A very large bite shown across your neck.
Ellie's eyes started to water, you grabbed onto her as it burned more and more "Ellie it hurts!" You yelled, sobing in pain and holding onto her for dear life
"I know baby.. I know, i-it's gonna be ok." Her voice cracking up as she hugged you, your blood spreading onto her clothing, she wanted to comfort you as much as she could.
"I don't want to go! I want to stay with you!" You cried out, sobing and shaking. She hated seeing you in pain, the thought of loosing you. She only tightened her grip when your body started jerking left and right, knowing you weren't going to be you. Knowing what she had to do to you soon, not wanting to let go.
You started to grab at her, but not like you would do when you wanted cuddles or kisses. Not like how you would when she had to leave early and you wanted her stay. You grabbed and clawed at her, now trying to bite her. Only then did she push you off, pulling her gun out and making sure it was loaded.
You got up and went at her again, but your body went limp this time as a loud gunshot went off. Your body landed in the snow, red slowly spreading to the snow surrounding you. It was Ellie's turn to drop to her kneels, sobbing, she just lost one of the people she cared for the most. SHE shot her own partner, yes you were infected. But it still hurt like hell. She stared at your lifeless body, hoping it would rise and hug her, comfort her again.
She covered you with snow, sitting next to the mound for a couple minutes as the storm calmed it's self. Shimmer slowly walking towards Ellie, she looks up and decides it's time to leave. She said her final goodbyes, final "I love you" she said as tears covered the dried ones. Mounting Shimmer she took off to Jackson
She dreaded having to tell everyone, retelling the scene to Dina and Jesse. Telling Joel and Tommy that you were gone. Telling your sibling and parents she couldn't protect their child, that Ellie now wears the blood of.
She had to tell everyone
you were gone and never
to return.

I hope you liked it, sorry if there are any mistakes in there or if it made you sad but it was kinda ment to- I may do more idk tho-

"This is stupid and unnecessary."
"You're stupid and unnecessary!"
"Real mature, Junie."
"You just said that meeting my friends is 'stupid and unnecessary', what did you expect?"
Chaewon rolled her eyes, very well knowing that the boy had a point, but still unable shake to her nerves.
Meeting new people has never really been in the girl's forte; no matter how confident she seemed in a crowd, "properly" meeting new people turned her into an entire new shade of shy and introverted.
And the fact that these specific people were important to one of the most important people in her life, didn't make her or her anxiety fare any better.
Seojun noticed and stopped to turn to her.
"Don't be so nervous. These guys are really nice, you'll be fine."
Chaewon nodded, still unsure, but followed his lead up the staircase that led to Suho's house, one Seojun's friends she was meeting.
Seojun spoke in a soft and comforting voice, "I really think you'll like them, Chaewon-ah."
She smiled.
❀❀❀
"You're an idiot!"
"Shut up! You're the idiot!"
"I'm not the one who messed with Yongpa High thugs and got them to chase us right now!"
It would be an understatement to say that Han Chaewon was pissed when her post-noraebong bliss with her brother was very quickly squashed afterwards when the two siblings were approached by delinquents from Yongpa High.
Though to be fair, the siblings themselves were both kind of delinquents themselves; but the girl's anger was more directed towards her twin brother, Han Seojun, rather than their chasers for her current mood.
"Well-!"
"Just shut up and get on the damn bike!" Chaewon ordered as she did so herself as well as securing her helmet.
"Yah! I'm older than you, don't tell me what to do." But despite the elder's words, he put on his helmet and sped off alongside his sister on their motorcycles.
With Lee Seongyong right on their tail.
Chaewon led her and her brother through various roads and alleyways, knowing this part of town like the back of her hand; Seojun riding just a couple feet behind her, trusting that the younger would get them out of the mess he created for them. She always did.
It seemed like an endless cycle between the two: Chaewon getting Seojun out of trouble while causing chaos herself and leaving him to clean it up and vice versa.
They were quite the chaotic neutral duo, if you would.
And the majority of the time for them, it was fun. Even the slight life-risking aspect of it; although "life-risking" could be a bit of an exaggeration.
It was fun as long as you weren't alone, and Chaewon always managed to snag a sibling or friend (not that she had many of either) and rope them into being her partner in crime.
But as much as she enjoyed the trouble-maker lifestyle, she thinks of it's disgraces. She thinks of Seyeon.
Seyeon and how much he disapproved of her trouble-making since she was much more frequent in doing so compared to her twin counterpart.
Even when he would (un)willingly take part in his friend's mischievous shenanigans, it was something he loved about her. Something he loved about all of them.
Chaewon was aware of this, but what would he think of the current me? She would constantly ask herself questions like these; though the "he" could be any of the three boys that were constantly on her mind.
The thing is, she already knew the answer. It saddened her to think of it, but what else could she do?
"Chaewon!"
She briefly looked back at her brother, wondering what that was about, before realising what he was warning: a girl was straight ahead, and she was about to hit her.
The unknown girl braced for impact while the twins jerkily swerved to each side of the obstacle.
Avoiding her, but not avoiding falling on the ground along with their bikes.
"Shit..." They cursed simultaneously.
The girl recovered from her shock and went to go apologise to them.
"Excuse me, are you two okay? What should I do?" She muttered the last part to herself. "Are either of you hurt?" Seojun irately pulled off his helmet, shaking his hair out while breathing heavily and glared at the woman who stood behind him.
Hearing a moan of pain from Chaewon, still lying on the ground, he rushed over to her and pulled off her helmet as well.
"Chae-ah, are you okay?" Seojun searched for any injuries, spotting g several messy scratches and gashes on her legs.
"I'm fine." The girl grumbled. Seojun lightly brushed over the bleeding wounds, causing her to wince and smack his hand away.
"Sorry..." He said half-heartedly. Seojun could never handle seeing someone he loved in any sort of pain or hurt in any way.
Still somewhat blinding with anger, Seojun carefully helped his twin up before angrily walking towards the worried and now scared Im Jugyeong.
"Yah!" But before the temperamental boy could chew her out, he spotted the group of motorcycles after them and quickly dropped his and Chaewon's helmets to the ground.
He took his sister's hand as they ran away, not realising that they had left Chaewon's fallen sword hair sticks on the ground.
She was struggling to keep up with him, but her adrenaline was going full force and it soon felt like there was never an injury in the first place.
She wouldn't let him carry her, knowing it would just slow them down even more.
They got to a certain point where they decided to split up, Seojun going left and Chaewon going left. A bit of a last ditch effort.
But as some of Seongyong's boys gained on her, Chaewon realized she couldn't run from them forever with her injured legs. So she stopped, putting her hands up and feigning surrender.
The boys caught up with her and grabbed at her shoulders, only for Chaewon to grab one of their wrists and flip them over her shoulder.
She turned to the other guy and back kicked his chest, causing him to take a tumble backwards and onto the ground. Chaewon started walking over to finish him off, not noticing that the first guy was up again.
He kicked her square in the back, causing her to fall onto her injured knees with a pained yelp.
She squeaked slightly when the second boy stepped on her back to push her fully onto the floor, putting more and more pressure every second.
"Not so tough now huh, princess?" One of them taunted before they both grabbed her arms and did their best to keep her under control. The boys brought her to the rest of the group where Lee Seongyong had Seojun cornered.
"Look what we found, boss."
Seojun's eyes went wide at his sister's slightly beat state as Seongyong turned to his underlings and smugly smirked at the captive girl.
"Well, well, well. I thought it was weird when the Han Twins weren't together."
"She put up a bit of a fight."
"I'd expect nothing less." The head gangster (if you could even call him that) chuckled to himself and lifted Chaewon's chin up with his index and middle finger. Seojun growled lowly as he started towards the two but was almost immediately stopped by two boys "guarding" him.
"Such a pretty thing," the slimy boy said, trailing a finger to a loose strand of hair, "perhaps you can be accepted as payment." He brushed it out of the way, only for Chaewon to savagely bite at his finger, Seongyong only just pulling away in time. Seojun chuckled at his reacted while shaking his head.
"You're a delusional bastard to think for even a second that Seojun would agree and that I would allow that." Chaewon narrowed her eyes and glared at the still slightly shaken boy. But nonetheless he went back to being smug.
He walked back over to the male twin while cracking his knuckled. "Well then I guess I'll have to find another way to get even with your brother." Chaewon gasped as Seongyong punched Seojun in the stomach, causing him to fold over.
"Oppa!" She rarely used the term "hyung" or "oppa", but when she did, it was usually blurted out on accident or during a time of distress.
"Hey, when I think about how, because of you," She screamed again when Seongyong kneed him in his stomach, bringing him to his knees. She could feel the pain of her twin almost vividly, she wanted wanted to throw up at it. "I have no money left, I just..."
He brought the boy back up by his jacket.
"Hey. You didn't come out that day intentionally to backstab us, right?" All Seojun did was scoff with a mocking smile. "Did you think we wouldn't do anything if you ignored and avoided us?" Seongyong went in to land another punch, but only ended up hitting air as his target shifted slightly over.
"Don't hit the face." Chaewon mimicked her brother's reaction from earlier in chuckling while shaking her head.
The teenage bullies just started to scoff in disbelief at the boy's brazenness.
"Yes, you avoided it. Okay, you're dead today." Just as Seongyong placed his hand on Seojun's shoulder with his other fist poised for another punch, the sound of a siren alerted the group: causing Chaewon to stop her struggling.
"Hey, the cops are here."
"Let's go quickly!"
Chaewon shook off the boys that held her hostage before straightening out her clothes.
Lee Seongyong however was hesitant before finally letting go.
"We'll meet again, Han Seojun."
As soon as the boys ran off, Chaewon ran up to her brother and practically jumped into his arms with a hug to the best of her abilities. Seojun returned the affection, whispering sweet nothings into her hair and assuring that they were okay now.
"Are you okay? Does anything seriously hurt?" Seojun smiled at the girl's concern for him and just opted for kissing her forehead.
"I'll survive. Are you okay? Did they hurt you?" Chaewon smiled back and shook her head.
"I'll survive."
Im Jugyeong, who had turned on the siren, came out of her hiding place and stared in the direction of where the group of boys ran off.
She slowly backed up with Seojun's helmet in one arm and Chaewon's hair sticks in the other hand, gasping when she distractedly bumped into said boy's solid chest with said girl beside him. The two were staring down at the bewildered girl.
She turned around and became even more intimidated by the twins' height. Although Chaewon wasn't much taller than her, Jugyeong being 5'7 and the other girl standing at a strong 5'9, her stare was enough to make her quiver.
"What's with you?" Seojun said with a blank look on his face.
"Uh, about that... Oh, there!" She pointed at a space between the twins who did nothing but turn their heads slightly at her finger in synchronisation before rolling their eyes.
"What are you doing?" Chaewon said with the same bored look on her brother.
Jugyeong bit her lip, realising she was pretty much screwed before turning to run away, almost falling on her face.
Chaewon caught her by her backpack and brought her back up, causing the girl to slam into her surprisingly also firm figure. Jugyeong slowly turned to look at her.
Chaewon tilted her head. "What do you think you're looking at?"
There was a slight silence before Seojun spoke up, "Run."
The girl seemingly snapped back into reality, running away. "Oh, oh, bye!" She ran away screaming.
"Saebom High School?" The twins pondered in unison.
"What an odd girl..." Chaewon wondered as Seojun scoffed at the interaction. She brushed her hair out of her face and ruffled it when she realized something.
"My hair sticks..."
Seojun stopped as well.
"My helmet!" They looked at the fleeing figure of the girl realizing she possessed their personal items.
"Hey!" But she was pretty much long gone.
"Aish..." He cursed.
"Want me to go get them?" Chaewon offered, ready to go sprint for her and her brother's possessions. They were both of fairly high emotional importance.
"No, you're injured. No more running for you." She rolled her eyes, but conceded.
"Let's go home; Gowoon is probably worried about us." Chaewon patted Seojun's shoulder, he looked at his sister and nodded before they started on their way back to where they left their bikes, the girl relenting in letting her brother carry her via piggyback ride.
❀❀❀
"Gowoon-ah! We're home!" Chaewon called out into the mostly empty house.
"Hey! How was noraebong?" Gowoon was sitting at their kitchen table with her schoolwork spread out.
"Good! Until Seojun was an idiot..." Said idiot glared at her.
"When is he not an idiot?"
"Yah!"
Chaewon laughed and placed her bag on an empty space on the table when Gowoon noticed her wounds.
"What happened to you?!" Chaewon looked down, she nearly forgot about her messed up legs.
"Consequences of Seojun's idiocy and a little bit of my own." She vaguely said before taking a seat next to her younger sister.
"Need help with anything?"
"Nah, I'm good. But you should clean those up and get some sleep."
"Eh. I'll pass." Chaewon winked with a smirk before getting up.
She's gotten into enough trouble and enough accidents that she's gained quite some knowledge about injuries and how to treat them.
"Imma patch myself up a little and then go out."
After cleaning and bandaging her plethora of scratches on both of her legs, wiping off the little makeup she had on, and changing her clothes, she grabbed her bag and made for the door.
"See you later!" She called out to the other two, though Seojun was probably asleep; that being a major reason as to how Chaewon was allowed out of the house at that moment.
Seojun trusts Chaewon to handle herself, but with everything that had happened earlier that night, his big twin brother instincts were skyrocketing; they have him either keep his counterpart in the house after a certain time, or demand he go with her.
"Be safe and don't get into too much trouble!" Gowoon cautioned.
"I make no promises on either of those things!"
❀❀❀
Having decided to take a nice walk instead of rising her motorcycle, Chaewon entered Prince Comics; a place that she's called her safe haven since...
Anyways, the atmosphere of the comfy bookstore had helped her more than she though it would.
She'd spend most of her free days there whenever she just needed a break.
She rarely actually ever read the books, only when she was really bored but not tired enough to nap-- so she just took cat naps.
2-3 hour long cat naps.
The Ahjussi didn't mind though, he liked the company and personality of the young girl. He even put a bean bag, pillow, and blanket especially for Chaewon. He was always happy to see her enjoy it.
Like right now, Chaewon nestled her head further into the bean bag; setting aside the blanket and pillow since she had since changed into short sporty shorts, tucking her exposed and bandaged legs into the warmth of her oversized hoodie.
Lee Suho entered the area with couches and chairs that were bathed in the light yellow-orange light, taking in the place he hadn't come to in awhile.
As he was about to go search for his desired book, he noticed a small, curled-up figure to his right-- face covered by their hood.
He turned to the body, studying it for a second. His eyes roamed over the person before spotting sliver of a certain tattoo on their ankle-- a tattoo he knew all too well.
It was of a key.
"Chaewon...?" He whispered in disbelief. The girl opened her eyes at the all too familiar voice.
Though Chaewon has always been a heavy sleeper, there was one voice that always seemed to get her up and moving besides her brother's.
"Suho?" She said in a similar tone to his. He froze.
God how he missed his name coming from her lips, only she could have that effect on him.
They tried to keep their eyes from checking the other out (in a non-sexual way. sort of.), though their voices and facial expressions already gave away their shock.
It's been so long since she's seen Suho. She noticed how he seemed to get even more handsome, if that was even possible.
But there was something else. Something obvious. But at the same time, Chaewon couldn't quite put her finger on it. Or maybe she didn't want to.
Because this new thing about the boy before her wasn't something good.
She wasn't a fan. Then again, she wasn't a fan of Suho in general.
"What are you doing here?" He asked in a monotone voice while holding a cold façade, Chaewon decided to do the same.
Her expression hardened and became slightly agitated. "Well I was taking a nap before someone so rudely interrupted me." She began stretching out her limbs like a cat, getting prepared to get the hell out of there.
"This is a comic store to read, not a motel to sleep in." He scolded.
"What's it to you where I sleep?" She snipped getting up. The boy slightly blushed at the double-meaning of her words while the girl hadn't cared to notice.
Her new position had exposed her injuries, Suho's eyes notably widening at the sight before quickly going back to indifference.
"What happened to you?"
Chaewon scoffed.
"Since when do you care about me or my wellbeing?"
"Well it's kind of hard to miss all of that." He gestured to her legs. "It doesn't mean I care about you."
Ouch.
The girl just scoffed again and rolled her eyes for what seemed to be the billionth time that night before going to leave.
She didn't need this, not after the day she had.
But she was suddenly pulled back by her hood and stood in front of a puzzled Suho once again.
"The hell?!" She brushed his hand off her hoodie. There was a jolt of electricity when their skin met, though neither addressed it and settled for just staring (glaring) at each other.
This went on for another minute or two when the Ahjussi came back from his bathroom break and went to see if Suho had gotten his book or not.
"Yah, Lee Suho. Did you get the-" He stopped short, noticing the position of the two and their tension.
"Am I interrupting something?" Suho and Chaewon looked at the owner, stepping apart after noticing how close they had gotten. Chaewon cleared her throat before bowing to the Ahjussi, thanking him for letting her stay as always, and then scurrying out of the store.
"Is Chaewon-ie okay?" Suho couldn't bring himself to answer.
He just stood there as he replayed their interaction in his head; wondering what the hell just happened.
❀❀❀
"Motorcycles! Motorcycles!" The friend group turned around to see two motorcycles heading right towards them, jumping away just in time.
The twins continued to clear a path for themselves, parking in the designated area for bikes.
The bustling students continued to stare and chatter amongst themselves in awe and shock.
Chaewon and Seojun took off their helmets, shaking their hair out while doing so.
She tugged and tightened her high ponytail as he brushed his fingers through his hair a couple of times.
When they got off their bikes, Jugyeong froze, recognising the two siblings from the other night.
"They're..." The memories replayed in her head as if they were on tape. "They're from out school?" The girl couldn't believe the unbelievable coincidence.
"The Han Twins are back," Sua remarked.
"Why are they here?" Sujin rhetorically asked, Taehoon echoing her. The group watched as Seojun and Chaewon started to walk to the school's entrance; the elder's arm around the younger's neck.
"The Han Twins?"
"Like how there are the Bermuda Triangle in the Atlantic and black holes in the universe," Sua began, "there are three charming students at our school, whom if you fall for once, you can never exit and get out: The chic, cold beauty God Lee Suho; the rough, wild horse God Seojun; and the dangerous, seductive Goddess Chaewon. Just like deciding between three of your favourite foods is so mind blowingly hard, they're the three ethereal beings at Saebom High School. They're the three top ones!"
Jugyeong's eyes comically widened upon hearing Chaewon's description.
Dangerous? She wanted to facepalm herself for already making an enemy out of a girl who was known to be not-so-friendly.
Meanwhile, the Han duo and Lee Suho had finally come to a stand-still at the front of the building, the two boys looking at each other intensely.
Although Chaewon was able to keep her poker face upon seeing Suho, she kept looking everywhere but him.
She didn't know if the feeling she was getting in her stomach from seeing him again were butterflies or knives.
"Forget the top three nonsense, I hate them. Though I can't really say too much for Chaewon since she can be more enigmatic than Lee Suho or her brother at times. And yet they're still the heartthrobs of Saebom boys and girls alike."
Despite the tension between the three being completely visible to anybody and everybody, the students kept chattering away, loving how this was going.
"The Han Twins returned!"
"They'll get into a fight again."
"Oo, it's already so loud!"
"I love it!"
But as Jugyeong and the group started getting nearer towards the three, she could see how they didn't really seem like friends.
"What's with them? They don't get along?" She asked, turning her head towards Sua.
"They used to be best friends, but they somehow fell apart. When they meet, the atmosphere gets so cold. It's especially weird since everybody thought that Suho and Chaewon were together during that time since they acted much closer than the other." Jugyeong was shocked, trying to process and imagine the two together.
In her mind, they fit pretty well look-wise and personality-wise.
Suho saw how Chaewon's eyes could never quite meet his own and kept his eyes on her.
Seojun took notice of this and roughly brought her closer into his side and raised an eyebrow at the boy who had since then turned his attention back to him. Chaewon's eyes traveled to the ground while Seojun turned his head and scoffed before eying his nemesis once again.
"So annoying."
Chaewon, wanting to escape from the situation, started tugging at her brother's hand that was still hanging off of her shoulder. "Let's go, Jun." Seojun kept his eyes on Suho for another second or two before complying with his sister's wishes.
The frozen exterior of Suho's heart cracked a bit as Chaewon's expressions burned and lingered in his mind, watching the siblings walk off.
The girl in question fighting the urge to look back at him.
❀❀❀
"Hello!" The teacher greeted the class who greeted him back while walking into the room with Seojun and Chaewon in tow.
Suho slightly perked up as they went up to the front of the room, both with their heads held high and looking bored as ever.
This time it seems, Chaewon had no problem in locking gazes with Suho before looking over the class again.
"Alright, Seojun and Chaewon are back now. Good to see them, right?" The class answered back 'yes' before giving a round of applause as instructed by the teacher.
"Bravo!" Cheers kept ringing throughout the classroom, Seojun looking off to the side in faux embarrassment while Chaewon just kept a blank and cold face, intimidating some of the students into silence.
"One of you can sit next to Suho—" The twins looked at each other in alarm, though not particularly showing it.
"What?"
"What now?"
They looked at the teacher.
All eyes were either on Suho, who just looked straight ahead, or the twins, one sighing before walking to where Jugyeong was sitting.
Chaewon watched him kick the leg of the desk, startling the girl.
"Yah. You go."
Jugyeong was just as bewildered as when they first met, only being able to point at herself and ask, "Me?" in a meek voice.
"This was originally my sister's spot." That alone was almost enough for Jugyeong to jump out of the seat, not wanting to test the girl's 'dangerous' reputation.
"Oh, Jugyeong has weak eyes, so she's sitting there." The teacher explained, causing Chaewon to quietly scoff and mumble to herself, "'Weak eyes' my ass..."
Though the teacher had heard her, he elected to ignore it before asking Taehoon to move.
"Taehoon. Our handsome Taehoon, can you switch spots?" The boy, of course, readily and excitedly accepted; the class laughing from his antics.
But before he could get up and walk to his newly appointed spot, he noticed that Seojun had still not moved from his place near Jugyeong's seat.
Chaewon walked up to Seojun, noticing that he was about to refute his senior and demand that she have her seat back.
But she was tired and didn't feel that it was necessary; even if it meant having to sit next to Lee Suho, it was better her than her twin.
She nudged him, getting his attention before nodding to the seat in the corner of the class, "It's fine, Jun."
The seat she motioned to was perfect for napping and not paying attention, she really knew how he was in school. But that didn't matter to Seojun if his sister had to sit next to his rival. He started mumbling about how her sitting next to said rival wasn't happening, but Chaewon was persistent in her glares, slightly pinching him and making the boy wince as he felt her sharp, ruby-red stiletto nails.
He conceded, but not before throwing a sharp and dangerous look at Suho, though the boy wasn't phased.
The twins split ways; Seojun going to his new seat in the back, Chaewon taking the one next to Suho's with Taehoon two spots behind her.
She felt Suho's gaze burn into the side of her face, but paid no mind and rested her head on the desk as her brother was doing for a nap.
Not even 5 minutes later, the sound of a door slamming open caused Chaewon to wake up, looking to the side instinctively. She didn't quite know how to feel when she didn't see Suho there, but quickly turned her attention back to the source of the sound that disturbed her sleep.
A group of boy entered the room, crowding around Seojun who still had his head on the desk.
"Yah, Han Seojun. If you and your sister returned, at least one of you should've shown your face and said hi." Chaewon suddenly stood up from her desk, the object making a horrible screeching sound that had all eyes on her. Seojun banged his fist on the desk before doing the same, exchanging looks with his sister once he felt her presence beside him.
The siblings had a stare off with the taller boy, causing the students to tense up.
This continued outside the school, Seojun and Chaewon standing a couple feet in front of the group of boys when the big one spoke.
"Hey, brother. Today's such great weather for you to die." Seojun rolled his eyes.
"Are you guys a girl group or something?" He scoffed.
"Seriously. Why are you standing like that?" Chaewon questioned, but the boys just sneered and chuckled mockingly among themselves.
"Why? Are you going to hit us? Okay, come in. Come here!" They all got into fighting stances.
"Yah, Kim Chorong!" Seojun's voice boomed, the two stepping up to the boys intimidatingly before he spoke up in a mock bravado tone.
"Your joke was a bit too much." That's what did it for all of them. Everyone started laughing, Chaewon even turning to her brother and playfully punching him before mocking his words.
"Hey, great acting for a pair of trainees." Chaewon playfully rolled her eyes at the boy while smirking.
"Ex-trainees, thank you very much." Chorong just stuck his tongue out at her to which she did the same.
"This is so childish." Seojun said, feigning irritation, "How much longer do I have to play around?"
"Yah, brother!… it's honestly fun, you know?” Chaewon started to laugh harder at the sound of their joy and the sight of seeing her brother teased further.
“Have you guys been well?” She asked.
“Yeah.”
“Woah!” Seojun suddenly exclaimed. “Kim Chorong, I think you gained more weight. Did you bulk up?” The victim of the taunting was staring at the taunter with incredulity while the rest started to crack up again. Chaewon rolled her eyes and shoved her brother’s shoulder, going to wrap her arms around the bigger boy.
“Yah! Leave him alone, Junie.” She pouted.
“Thank you, Chaewon! And for your information, I lost 10 kilograms!” Chaewon giggled at the banter as one of the boys commented that he could see the muscles.
Chorong turned to look down at the girl who was still clinging to his side.
“If your mother better?” He asked. She smiled fondly at her friend’s concern and nodded her head.
“She’s a lot better. Thanks, Chocho.” The two exchanged eye-smiles as the rest let out relieved sighs.
“What a relief. I’m sorry I couldn’t make a munsang.” Chorong said, turning back towards the other twin.
“Yah, what do you mean by munsang, you fool?” Seojun scolded. “It should be munbyeong.”
“Hey, hey, hey.”
“Smart!”
Chaewon smiled as her brother proudly pulled her towards him, wrapping his arms around the girl and resting his head on top of her head, both smirking.
It was good to be back.
❀❀❀
Chaewon decided to break off from the group to get food from the cafeteria, having forgotten money to go to the snack bar.
While in line, she spotted Lee Suho.
He’s so different... She couldn’t help thinking the obvious, but it felt so unsettling for her to see the boy she once thought she knew so well to be so... cold.
But under the circumstances that occured, it was understandable. And she couldn’t be a hypocrite by saying that he was the only one that changed.
Then all of a sudden—
“That girl...” Im Jugyeong had come to the lonely looking boy and gave him a red ginseng juice.
His favorite.
How did she know it was his favorite?
Why did she give it to him?
Why did I care?
Why am I asking all these questions?
“The hell?” Jugyeong walked away as Chaewon started placing food onto he tray.
Later that day while Chaewon was looking for her brother and friends, she saw Suho sitting on a bench looking at his phone with earbuds in, when the girl came up to him again.
This time, she was holding a large bag and took out one of his earbuds before whispering something to him and quickly running off.
Ah, so she’s another one of his fangirls. I should’ve known. Chaewon rolled her eyes, starting to walk again.
Only to stop again, seeing Lee Suho actually get up and seemingly follow the girl.
Chaewon couldn’t contain her curiosity and decided to quietly follow him, ending up at the rooftop.
She stayed by the door and watched their interaction. She almost felt bad for Im Jugyeong, knowing how harsh Suho could be.
It seemed to be worse this time around though since Jugyeong decided to flee from the rooftop, not even noticing her eavesdropper.
“Wahhh, you’ve really changed, Lee Suho.” Chaewon said walking out from her hiding place.
Suho turned to her and looked irritated, but also somewhat guilty and surprised. He didn’t want her to see that.
“Did you follow me or something?”
“Mm-hm.” He was quite surprised by her honesty, but he should’ve seen it coming. “I was quite curious when that girl was so brazen as to do what she did. I had to see what would happen.”
Silence stood between the two for a moment before Suho sighed and brushed past Chaewon and back into the building. She continued forward to the edge of the ledge and placed her hands on it, observing the view and breathing it in before pulling two things from her pockets.
Suho watched from the entrance as the girl took a cigarette from the box and lit it with her lighter.
“You still do that stuff?” He couldn’t help but to ask. He, Seyeon, and Seojun always hated whenever she smoked, even though it was a pretty rare occurence. But it still came to a point where they organized an intervention and her family had almost sent her to rehab. After that, he thought she was sober, or at least got better at hiding her actions, but things change he supposed.
Chaewon didn’t answer, seemingly unbothered by his still being there and instead blowing another puff of smoke.
“Does Seojun know?”
“I don’t see how that’s any of your busine-”
“I’m making it my business because I’m not going to stand here and let you ruin your life doing that shit!”
“Oh please, Lee Suho. I’ve done plenty of other stuff that’ll ruin my life, and I’m not going to start giving a fuck just because you say so.”
Suho internally cringed at the stuff implied by her words. He knew she was reckless and liked trouble, but he didn’t know how bad it might’ve gotten over the time they’ve been apart.
Seeing and interacting with her now made him question how close they really were back then.
“Besides, as if me dying wouldn’t make you happy.” Chaewon softly spoke, it almost sounded sorrowful; though it still held some hot resentment.
Suho felt his facial expressions go awry.
I wouldn’t be happy. I’d be devastated.
“Maybe I should do it more often. Speed up the process, put us both out of our misery, finally put a smile on that frustratingly, emotionless face of y-”
“Don’t.” He interrupted. Neither noticed how close Suho had gotten while she was talking.
“Don’t say those things.” He whispered.
Chaewon didn’t know what to do. She didn’t know what to say. And all she could hear was her heartbeat about to break out of her chest.
“Why not? It’s not like you care about me, right...?” Chaewon shakily asked with an almost mocking undertone.
He didn’t say anthing and neither did she.
After about a minute of nothing, Chaewon turned back around to face forward. She closed her eyes, trying to reel her emotions in. Bringing the cigarette back up for another hit, Suho took the death stick from between her lips and threw it onto the ground, putting it out aggressively with his shoe.
She was too shocked to even scold the boy and his actions, seeing how he had seemingly gotten even closer.
Suho stared intensely at the girl. His eyes were full of caring and warmth. Yet at the same time, they were full of cold nothingness. But Chaewon could see under that, she always could; that’s one of the things that made them so compatible.
She just didn’t know if her senses were trust-worthy or not this time around.
They could always tell how the other actually felt. But times have changed.
They changed.
They weren’t Suho and Chaewon anymore.
They weren’t anything anymore.
❀❀❀
It was the next day during gym.
The students were outside playing dodgeball while Chaewon had her tracksuit jacket wrapped around her waist, exposing her normal clothes, and sat on the sidelines watching her brother play.
She could feel a certain pair of eyes on her every so often as she felt herself do the same, but nobody else seemed to notice it.
“Yes! Han Seojun, out!” Chaewon laughed at the fact her brother was eliminated, especially with it being by the hands of Lee Suho and Yoo Taehoon.
As he walked off to join his sister who was now standing up, the ball from the girls’ side traveled to where the twins were, Seojun stopping it with his foot before Im Jugyeong could grab it.
“Yah. You’ve seen us before, right?” Jugyeong laughed awkwardly as the twins stared down at her.
“What are you saying?” She tried taking the ball only for Seojun to press harder on it.
“You ran off with my helmet and my sister’s hair sticks.” She looked back up at him.
“Did you not?”
Jugyeong’s eyes went to the space beside him and pointed at something, “Oh! Over there!”
“We didn’t fall for that last time either-“ Before he knew it, Seojun was shoved to the side as a ball collided with the back of Chaewon’s head who although wasn’t in any pain, was pretty pissed.
Several noises of shock and disbelief sounded from the boys’ side.
“Chae-ah!” Seojun rushed back to his sister’s side and held onto her. “Are you okay?” Before she could answer, he turned to the culrptiy and glared at him with flaming death and growled, “Aish!”
“S-S-Sor… T-t-t-the class president! It was the class president.” Ahn Hyungyu tried explaining in extreme fear.
Jugyeong stood up with the now free ball. “I’m sorry. I’ll give them both back tomorrow.”
It felt like déjà vu when the girl turned around again about to fall on her face; only this time, no one was gonna help her.
Lee Suho, who was watching the whole thing in silent anger, stalked off, but not before roughly shouldering the boy who accidentally injured Chaewon and stepped over Jugyeong’s sprawled out body.
The show was over and Seojun went to scold Hyungyu who was still apologizing profusely, but Chaewon stayed where she was, staring at the boy who was walking back into the school’s building who wanted nothing more than to ask if she was okay.
❀❀❀
Chaewon, Seojun and the rest of their friends walked down the hallway; some girls and boys passing by whispered in awe and silently fangirled/fanboyed.
The twins walked beside each other and smirked at the attention. It was amusing to say the least.
This continued in an almost slow-motion fashion when all of a sudden—
“Wait.” Seojun dropped down to the floor and started re-tying his shoelaces. Chaewon chuckled and jokingly pushed his shoulder, making him lose his balance and making her laugh even more.
“MOVE!” The group looked forward to see Im Jugyeong running down the hallway with a face full of cake.
Although it was a weird sight, Chaewon stayed where she was and stood in front of the panicked girl.
Jugyeong came to a halt with wide eyes in front of the taller girl who had a questioning look with a perked up eyebrow.
She slightly bowed with a quiet “excuse me, sorry” before running past her and jumping onto Seojun’s back and catapulting herself forward.
“Yah!” Chaewon squatted down onto the floor beside her brother who was now sprawled on the floor. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” He gritted looking at the direction of the runaway girl.
But it didn’t stop there; the rest of their class following Im Jugyeong, also in a panic.
Chaewon hurriedly brought Seojun back up to his feet and pushed them both to the wall for safety.
“What the hell is going on?!”
They waited for a couple of seconds to see if anymore people would go stampeding down their way, being relieved when it seemed to be over.
“Are you sure you’re okay, Jun?” Chaewon looked over his body for any injuries.
“I’m fine, Chae. Really.” She smiled at him and linked their arms to start walking.
Then Lee Suho came from the other side of the hallway, the side where they had originally come from and where everyone had gone to.
And he wasn’t alone.
Hiding underneath his jacket was Im Jugyeong, still cake-faced.
The twins had to stop and stare at the unusual scene; neither knowing how to feel at the sight before them.

🌸A/N: Yay! I can’t believe I finally published this. I’m going to start working on the second chapter as soon as possible. Also, I realize that Yeji is also 5’7, but I looked at the height of the other characters and decided that 5’9 was good. Besides that, please excuse any typos or mistakes. I hope you enjoyed!
BTW: The picture below is Chaewon’s outfit. The white dress shirt part of the uniform is unbuttoned and tied in a croptop way, showing the bralette. I tried finding a good picture of Saebom’s uniform but it was pretty hard so I just cropped Sujin’s. Sorry for it’s pretty low quality😅

Open Book
You're checking your hair for the third time on the huge mirror in the main hall. The lilac dress fits you perfectly, of course, since your mother wouldn't allow you to buy anything that didn't look marvelous. Your hair, Amelia's doing, it pinned up on a high bun, a few strands allowed to be free, only to frame your face. But you can't wait to let it all down, to strip out of the dress and put on some normal clothes. The night would be doomed if it wasn't for Billy. Since the almost drowning incident, your father is very thankful, and he's even giving Billy generous tips. And you've been going out of your way to talk to him, offering help, even though he always refuses. And Michael is only allowed here on formal occasions when your father and his have business to discuss, so it means you haven't seen him in the last couple of days.
The bell ring drags you out of your thoughts, and you immediately get nervous. Taking a look at the clock, you notice he's right on time. Rushing to the front door, as fast as your high heels allow, you gesture for the butler to leave it to you, and he nods and walks away. Taking a deep breath, you pull the door open, and a smile comes to your lips straight away. Billy looks amazing, and in this suit, people will be talking for a very different reason. He'll get many stares, you're sure of it. He won't look misplaced, he'll be the center of all attentions.
“You... Clean up real nice.” As you stutter, you notice as he quickly runs his eyes through your body, making you blush.
“You too.” He says with a smile, before tilting his head towards the car. “Should we get going? I'm sure you'd hate to be late.”
“Oh, no. God forbid.” You say, sarcastically, making your way to his car. And what a car. A dark bluish Camaro, if you're not mistaken, which you think suits him perfectly. “Hey, what a machine, huh?” You exclaim as you get into the passenger seat. Billy walks around the car before settling down beside you.
“I'm sure it's nothing compared to what you may drive.” Giving you a glance and a small smile, he speeds away, through the rocky path that leads to the gates.
“Well, my pink Cadillac is not as badass as this baby here.”
“A pink Cadillac? That's girly.”
“I'm a girl if you haven't noticed.” He slows down at the gates, and you kindly waves at the security guard as you move to hit the street.
“I noticed, don't worry.” His Camaro makes a wild noise when he speeds up, flying through the road, so you decide to buckle up.
“Good.” Why does it makes you happy you know he noticed you're a girl? “So, what's her name?” You ask, gesturing at the car when Billy gives you a confused glance.
“She doesn't have one.” Chuckling, he turns his attention back at the road ahead. “But you're right, she should have a name.”
“What are the chances you'll let me chose it?” Moving on your seat a little to turn your body towards him, you bite your lip to see his smile.
“Only if you come up with something really good.”
“Lily.” You burst out.
“Absolutely not.”
“But is my favorite flower and it's beautiful.” Defending yourself, you can't keep the smile from your face.
Billy furrows his eyebrows, shaking his head lightly. “Nope. No way. You're not naming my car Lily.”
Since he seems very focused on the road, you get the chance to look at him. Your eyes run through his face, his cheeks, jawline, lips. His eyes, that you concluded, are the same color as the ocean. You wish you had a good excuse to look at them, just for a while. “Not even if I say please?”
“Not even if you make puppy eyes.”
With a dramatic eye roll, you decide to give up on the matter, for now at least. Half an hour later, you finally get to the hotel where the gala will happen. You advise Billy to park his car three blocks away since it'll be a lot easier to leave after the party is over. Then, you leave the car and walk the rest of the way. The hotel entrance is already crowded, and you know at least half of all these people, but so far, you haven't spotted any of your friends.
“Can I hold your arm? Just because that's how the dates walk around in these things.” Shyly, you ask as you climb up the stairs to the main hall.
“Sure.”
“Thanks.” Muttering, you take his arm, now already at the entrance. The two men by the door give you a nod, gesturing for you to get inside. People know you, there's no need to ask for an invitation. The hotel's hall is beautifully decorated, with tiny white and yellowish lights scattered through the walls, and then hanging, coming all together on the chandelier. You can't deny it looks amazing, but still, you'd rather be somewhere else. “So... That's how it happens.” You start, walking around with Billy. “We find our table, and on the way, we make sure to spot and greet some people. The goal is to make your presence known. Then, since it's a beneficial gala, I'll have to make a donation.” Shrugging your shoulders, you wave at one of your mother's friends. “Then we go to our table and endure the rest.”
“No dancing?” He asks, after a small pause you make to greet Mr. and Mrs. Whayland, and thankfully, not James.
“I don't dance on these things, but...” Letting go of his arm for a moment, you turn around until you facing him, slowly walking backwards. “I will if you let me name your car Lily.”
“No dancing then.” He simply says with a smirk. “Quit it. You won't–” Billy suddenly grabs your arms, pulling you to the side. When you look behind you, you notice you almost hit one of the waiters, his tray full of vol-au-vents. “Careful.”
“Oh, my gosh. Sorry.” Giggling and a little embarrassed, you give the young man an apologetic look. “Let me get these.” Reaching out your hand, you take two pieces, handing one over to Billy. “Try this.”
“What is that?”
“Vol-au-vents. Some French thing. It's a pastry with some kind of sauce. It's good.” Carefully not to drop any sauce on your dress, you give the small thing a bite, gesturing for Billy to do the same, eyes focused on his face as he eats. “So?”
“I like pizza better.” He concludes and you nod.
“You're definitely the best date I could find.” Taking his arm again, you pull him to the table where most of the food is placed. There are waiters here too, making sure it's always be full. “Now, chose something.”
You take a quick glance at his face as he thinks. You're happy he doesn't seem so out of place here, or at least he doesn't let it show. “Shrimp cocktails.” He says. “Are they as good as they look or will I be disappointed?”
“I wouldn't know. I'm allergic to shrimp so if you're planning to kill me, that's the fastest way to do it.” Halfway through your sentence, Billy stops on his tracks, his hand now just hovering over the shrimps. “But you can eat them. Just... For real, don't touch me with that hand.”
“Let's not risk it then.”
“Alright.” Blushing, you clear your throat. You did hear some stories about Billy, mostly from your friends, trying to talk you out of coming with him. Billy has a way with women, never really going out with the same more than a couple of times. He's up late partying, punching people in the face when they get on his nerves, stuff like that. But he's being very nice with you today and was kind enough to make this hell of a huge favor. You don't care what he does in his free time, he's a nice guy. “This over here.”
“Brandy snaps.” You say, taking one for yourself. “I love this.” Some of the chocolate gets on your thumb as you eat, so you suck it clean, a gesture that makes some people around give you a disapproving stare. Flustered, you turn back at the table.
“Everything alright?”
“Yup. Come, I want to make a donation and sit down.” The incident makes you a little upset. These rules, as stupid as they may be, are meant to be followed, mostly on an event like this. Not even silly accidents as getting some chocolate cream on your thumb are acceptable. When you get to the table, you ignore the line of people behind it, taking one of the paychecks and a pen, you start writing down. “Last time, I donated fifty cents. As a joke, you know. People only do this to show off how much money they can afford to give away.” You tell Billy as you sign down your name. “My mother gave me a hell of a lecture.”
“So how much will you donate now?” He asks, coming a little closer to read what you're writing.
“Twenty.”
“Twenty dollars?”
“Twenty thousand.” You say as you put down the value, sliding it into the rectangular glass box. When you move to take Billy's arm again, he has his eyebrows raised. “What?”
“Nothing. It's just a lot of money.”
Not really, but you won't tell him that. “At least it'll buy something someone needs. Our table is by the windows, thank God.” You exclaim once you finally read your name on a piece of paper attached to the centerpiece of the table. Pulling Billy with you, you take a seat, your eyes immediately finding the beach, just across the street. “We can see the beach from here. A total win.”
“(Y/N)?” Your father calls, and you abandon the ocean for a while, finding him standing beside your mother.
“Hi, dad. Mom. How's the organization of–”
“Is he your companion for the gala?” He cuts you off, exchanging a glance with Billy. You knew they'd be mad, but something just clicks inside you. Through the corner of your eyes, you see Billy immediately looks away, at the beach.
“Yes, father.”
“Didn't you had other guys to–” He's interrupted by an announcement, his and your mother's being called alongside several other people. “We'll discuss this later.” And he leaves, your mother only giving you a hard stare.
“I bet it won't be pretty when you get home,” Billy speaks, still looking through the window. “They might even ask for someone else to attend to your pool.”
“Well, if it wasn't you working that day, I could've drowned so... I'll make sure to remind them of that.” Then, everybody stands up. You, taking the chance, walk closer to the window, arms crossed, forcing your eyes to find where the horizon is, now mixed with the dark sky. Soon, Billy joins you, eyes on the landscape. “Sorry about that. I swear I don't understand why is such a big deal.” You do get it's because he's just the pool guy, an employee, but still, it's stupid. Why can't he be your date? Would your father rather Michael, who almost got you killed, came with you? “I... I'm having a good time with you. This would suck a lot more if I were with some of those idiots.”
“Don't worry about me. I'm used to it.”
“You shouldn't be.” Turning around, you rest your back against the glass, gesturing at the party in general. “Do you know why people make such exaggerated donations? Because the five highest paychecks will be announced, so everyone will know. And you think people will find that selfless and generous? No. They'll start counting, calculating how much those people actually have on the bank to afford to spend so much.” There's a mocking tone on your voice, and you struggle to keep it down. “This isn't about helping those in need, is about social status.”
“Do you wanna get out of here?” Billy suddenly says, and the idea is so absurd it makes you chuckle, looking at him.
“What?” Looking around, you shake your head. “I can't... I can't just leave.”
“Why not?” He shrugs his shoulders. “You donated, your parents already know you came, and some woman gave you a death stare just because you sucked some chocolate off your thumb. You achieved all your goals for the night.”
Tilting your head to the side and looking at the floor, you consider it. The night is far from over, and the thought of having to sit here for hours is horrible. And the possibility of leaving thos place makes your heart beat faster. “Where?”
“There.” When you look up at him again, he's gesturing at the beach.
Slowly, a smile comes to your lips. Quickly scanning through the people, you notice they're quite focused on the host, who's still speaking. “Alright, let's go. But we gotta be careful.”
“We will. C'mon.” Billy grabs your hand, moving through the tables, but remaining near the wall. As you keep his pace, you're on high alert, checking if anyone is looking your way. It feels like it takes forever for you to reach the entrance, only half open, but when you do, you're relieved to notice those two men aren't here.
“We're out!” You burst out, quite loudly, bringing a hand to cover your mouth. Quickly, you rush downstairs, walking around the huge fountain and right into the sidewalk. You make a small pause, waiting for some cars to pass by before crossing. You can't stop smiling when you reach the other side. That's when you notice you're still holding his hand, so you let go, looking away. “I can't believe we're doing this.”
“It's not a bid deal.”
“It is for me.” Using his shoulder to balance yourself, you take your high heels off before stepping on the sand. “I never did anything like this.” Feeling the sand under your feet is amazing. This night just got so much better. “You're the best date I could ever find and that's final.” Turning on your heels, you find Billy coming your way, also barefoot.
“A lot of people would disagree.”
“I don't see anyone else here, so their opinion doesn't matter.” Reaching out to your bun, you pull all the pins, letting your hair down and dramatically shaking your head, until the strands fall all over your face. “This feels like freedom.” You giggle, taking a deep breath, aware of how stupid it may sound.
“I don't understand you.” He says, and you open your eyes again, looking at him. Billy walks by, and you quickly move to follow his pacenalong the beach.
“What don't you understand?”
“I met a lot of chicks like you. Rich, wearing rings more expansive than my car, with easy access to anything money can buy and they're happy.” Putting a strand of hair behind your ear, you glance at Billy. His shirt is half unbuttoned under the suit, giving you a glimpse of his chest, and that makes you blush and look ahead again. “But you don't sound happy.”
Shrugging your shoulders, you breathe out, not sure how to answer to that. “I know you probably think I'm just some spoiled rich kid with rich kid's problems who has everything yet wants more–”
“I know people who are just like that.” Billy makes a pause, and you give some more steps before turning around to look at him. “You're not one of them.”
“Are you sure?”
“You're the only boss I ever had who offers help.” As he speaks, a small ripple reaches your feet, and you jump a little before giggling and walking into the water until it reaches your calves, soaking your skirt. “You'll ruin your dress.”
“Mother won't let me wear it again since everyone already saw it so...”
“So... You always do what's expected of you.”
“I'm an open book to you, am I not?” Furrowing your eyebrows, you wonder how did he got there so fast. People don't notice it. You're always in perfect disguise.
“I just know where to look, I guess.”
“Well, I do what's expected of me, yes.” Walking out of the water, you feel the skirts of the dress getting attached to your legs, but you don't mind. “I gave up trying to argue with my parents a long time ago so I just... Follow the rules. One day after the other.” This is sad, you know it. Just mentioning it sucks. Being part of the high society is a privilege, or so they say. But you? You don't have a choice. “The good part is that it's Summer and there's no college. The bad part is that there are some stupid events to attend to, like that gala.”
“I know some people who would kill to be invited for something like that.” Billy tilts his head to where the hotel is.
“If you were somehow enjoying that we can go back.” By the look he gives you, it's quite obvious he wasn't, so you smile, walking closer to him, and pretending to pin your hair up again. “I can just fix this and we can go.”
“That's not my kind of party, don't bother.” He takes both your hands, pulling them away from your hair, causing it to cascade down again.
“And what's your kind of party?”
“You wouldn't like it.”
“Try me. You will never know if you don't take me to one.” The moment you say it, you understand what you meant, and the smile fades from your lips as you both resume your walking. Billy wouldn't take you anywhere else, not somewhere where his friends would see him with you, some wealthy, stupid girl. And your parents would never approve you going somewhere... Different. Somewhere not filled with millionaires. “Nevermind.” You're quick to add. “I throw my own parties. Just blasting music in my bedroom and dancing with myself.”
“So that's where that music comes from.” He chuckles, and you playfully elbow him. “Maybe someday. If your father doesn't kick me out of your property, we might see a little of each other every once in a while.”
“Yeah. You could let me rake some leaves at least, I'm sure I can–” A loud, deafening explosion cuts you short, and you cover both your ears out of instinct. When the impact is over, you turn around, easily finding where the dark smoke and flames are coming from. The hotel. “What the hell.” You're still speaking when a dozen black vans come into your sight, all heading to the hotel. Seconds later, the shootings begin.

"Well, Marinette? Are you happy?"
Lila squinted, even before Marinette glanced back at her. She was disgusting, what with the way she stood so straight and fearless in her presence.
In the school courtyard, no less! As far as Lila was concerned, this territory belonged to herself.
Marinette turned to face her fully, then tilted her head. "Um... yeah?"
Lila bristled, glare intensifying. This peasant—
"I wanted to be friends," Marinette claimed, "but you wanted to keep lying."
She scoffed. What an idiot. Stepping closer, Lila asked, "Didn't you listen? I tell people what they want to hear."
"Doesn't seem like that anymore," Marinette retorted. "They only wanted to hear it as long as they thought you could give them chances in life."
Lila's hands tightened into fists. She didn't stutter as she argued, "I'll—I'll still find a way to ruin you, Marinette! I never go back on my threats."
Marinette raised both brows. "You sure go back on your lies though."
She did not just hear that. She did not just hear the girl who'd once cowered at her talk back to her like that.
Uncurling her fists, she kept a stern expression and shrugged as she retorted, "Say whatever you want. I always get my way, no matter what."
Though Marinette's expression didn't change, she went silent at the comment. Lila smirked in satisfaction, taking whatever little victory she could.
Minimizing the level of damage Marinette could've done had been an understandable miscalculation on her part. Marinette was weak, and only got power when she dared to team up with that... insect.
They'd been a good match, admittedly; two obstacles that could've been a lot more useful to her had they just cooperated. In fact, had she known all this would've happened, she would've gone after Marinette full-force a long time ago, squashing her like the pest she became down the line. She might've even been able to go after Chat Noir had she tried hard enough. Given the recent events, he—
Finally, Marinette spoke. "You'll never get your way with that attitude. You need help, Lila."
Lila went stiff. "Excuse me?"
"I don't know how your mind works, or where you get this idea that you can lie forever and hurt people the way that you do without any consequences, but you need to see someone. You're living a lie to the point where liar is the only thing I can think of when I see you. There's nothing else about you that's real."
"How—" Lila glared, losing herself for a moment. "How dare you!"
Marinette didn't flinch, only staring back at her as if the conversation was over and Lila herself was pitiful.
Lila was seething. She couldn't believe that Marinette had the gall to talk to her like that, no matter how much it'd seem like she'd "won."
But that was fine. She'd leave, she'd rethink her strategy, and then she'd get rid of Marinette once and for all. Even if it didn't give her all of her power back, she didn't care, so long as the person who caused it suffered.
She turned, walking in the other direction. It took a few seconds for her to realize that there was someone in her path; Alya had just become so useless to her that she might as well have not existed.
Alya stood with a neutral expression, twirling her phone in her hand. "Hey, Lila."
Lila remembered that they were still technically friends (ugh) and forced a grin. "Hey, Alya. What are—"
"Cut the lies," Alya interrupted, now clutching her phone. "I know you don't associate with people who won't help you get up in the ranks."
Lila squinted, taking a moment to recall that her own conversation with Adrien had gone the same way.
So Alya had heard, or maybe it'd been a trap? No, Alya couldn't have been that smart.
"You heard something like that?" Lila asked, playing innocent for now.
"I heard you say something like that." Alya finally turned the phone, holding it out with the screen clearly visible. "And I'm not taking it anymore."
Lila's gaze flicked to the screen as she vaguely tried to hide her disinterest. "What's that?"
"Your lies," Alya hissed. "Every single one the class could remember - all the lies you used to get ahead - debunked. I had Max and Markov help me so I'll be able to send it to the whole school."
Lila's bangs hid the panicked raise of her brows. "What—what are you talking about? I'm not a liar! You—you're all caught up in the terrible things LadyBugOut said!" Putting on her best attempt at bargaining, Lila prodded, "Alya, you don't want to do this. We're friends. Look, I know a guy, we can—"
"Yeah, see..." Alya stared at Lila, almost condescendingly. "The funny thing is—"
Her thumb hovering over the send button, Alya continued, "Now I never know if you're lying or not."
Lila tried to leap forward to grab the phone, but Alya stepped back and the button was hit. Almost immediately, the sound of two phones going off rang through the courtyard; Lila's and Marinette's.
Lila frantically reached for her phone and opened what had been sent to her. To say it was scathing was an understatement, the whole thing full of warnings to either avoid her outright or take anything she said with a grain of salt.
Alya pointed at her with her phone. "You ruined me and tore the class apart. Consider it payback."
Lila was still trying to process, but all she could feel was rage.
Complete and total rage.
"You... you ruined yourself!" Lila spat out, dashing forward and pushing past Alya on the way. She ran to the school doors and rushed out, speeding down the stairs and along the sidewalk.
Just as Lila had left, Marinette glanced over at Alya, pausing with a level of caution in her gaze. "...Alya," she began carefully.
Alya looked away sharply, her expression hard to place. Anger? Regret? Jealousy?
Meanwhile, all that came out of her mouth was, "Save it."
~~~~~
Lila searched the skies, not out of desperation, but out of an unspoken pact. In all her life, she'd never been so thoroughly outma—
No, not outmatched. Just caught off-guard for a moment. It wasn't her fault that the classmates looked so weak and pathetic at first glance. It was no wonder why they flaked on her so easily; they were sheep, and they flip-flopped between anyone who had anything to say as long as they were words.
She'd been the fox - bold and ready to pounce - and Marinette had just been a mouse, so small and vulnerable that everyone wanted to be on her side.
Well, that was their loss. After all, she could still enact her revenge. She still had someone to rely on.
The purple butterfly coming near her made that very clear, and Lila stopped running to reach out for it. It fluttered into her hand, as if expectant of her.
"Nice to see you again, Hawk Moth," she greeted with a grin full of malice.
She didn't hear the click of a camera as she offered the butterfly her bracelet.
MISTLETOE
Summary: Where Y/N is part of the Shawn Mendes tour staff. Everyone’s in Miami, where the last show was before Christmas, but something ruins the plans of everyone who wants to spend the holidays with their families. Camila's mother invites them all to spend Christmas at her house and they accept. Shawn and the others start a plan to reunite Connor and Y / N.
Warnings: English is not my native language so I apologize if there are mistakes.
A/N: I know, I know it's been almost a month since Christmas HAHAHAHA, but I had this in my drafts and for some reason I never posted it.
Remember, the requests are open!
Tumblr media
"It's a joke?" Cez asks for the third time on the phone while he keeps an irritated scowl on his face. "Ok, if there is nothing else to do ... ok, thanks, bye"
After a while, he cuts the phone and watches us all before speaking. "Ok guys, this is not easy to say."
"What happen?" Connor asks concerned.
"Our flight was canceled due to bad weather in I don't know where and apparently there is no airline that can take us home in time for Christmas"
"Are you serious?"
"Do you think I'd be kidding about something like that, Sylvie? They said that the flights will be available again in 5 days. ”Everyone sighs in surrender.
"I am very sorry for what happened, I know that everyone wanted to spend Christmas with their families" Sinu, Camila's mother begins to say "But you are all welcome to spend these holidays here, with us" She says referring to Camila, Alejandro, Sofía, Shawn and her.
"That's very nice of you Sinu, but do you think you can feed all of us tomorrow night?" She laughs in response to Cez.
"Of course. Anyway, there are 5 more people, it is nothing, you don’t worry "
It was Cez, Brian, Sylvie, Connor and Y/N who missed their flight, since the rest of the staff had taken flights to different parts that same day, but earlier.
"Then I suppose we will spend this Christmas at the Cabello’s house." Cez ends.
"It will be fun." Y/N says  looking at Camila with a smile.
"Yes, it will be."
...
At one point in the afternoon, they were all in the living room, except Camila's father who was taking a nap, Y / N who was taking a shower and Connor who was on the phone with his mother.
"So what’s the plan?" Sylvie asks.
"I don't know, but we have to make those two take the first step tonight, or I don't know what I'll do with my life, they stress me out." Brian says exaggeratedly, referring to Y/N and Connor
"I think I have an idea," Sinu exclaims as she leaves the kitchen.
"What? Mom-" Only a few minutes later she comes back with something hidden behind her back "What are you bringing there?” With a bright and proud smile on her face, she shows us a little mistletoe.
"Oh my god, you’re brilliant." Sylvie claps.
...
"So the plan is, at some point in the night, both are under that" Camila ends.
"And finally they will kiss, for goodness sake!" Brian exclaims with his arms in the air.
"Who will kiss?" Connor enters the kitchen suddenly causing us all to panic.
"Nothing, little boy" Brian exclaims quickly while Sinu with a quick movement hides the object that only seconds before had our full attention. "How is your mother? How did she react to the news that her little boy won't be spending christmas at home? " Brian walks over to him and puts one arm around her shoulders, patting her while he ruffles her hair with his other hand.
"Don't call me little boy"
"Hey Tiny, don't get mad, we just play," Shawn says with a laugh as he tightens his grip on Camila's shoulder next to him, who laughs anyway. Connor just rolls his eyes and walks away from Brian.
“What do you all have with giving me such strange nicknames? I don’t like it, at all."
"I don't think any of those are better than the Lemon one, I think it's very original" Y/N he comes down the stairs laughing, his hair wet from the shower she had taken.
"Oh darling, go dry your hair, you can catch a cold." Sinu tells the girl. "Camila, go show him the hair dryer." Camila nods as she gets up from the side of her boyfriend, letting her arm fall on the couch.
Shawn watches Connor and sees him off guard glaring at Y/N coming up the stairs. He sighs and sits next to him.
"Hey, what's up?“
“"Nothing, could you explain to me for the last time why the nickname lemon?”
...
The night of Christmas Eve had already arrived. They were all at the table having dinner while laughing and talking about any topic.
"Can I have the wine, please?" Sylvie exclaims.
Y/ N directs her hand to the wine at the same time as Connor does, making her hands touch.
Y/N thinks everything has been really weird between her and Connor lately. When she met him over a year ago on Shawn's tour, he created a trust in her that she had never felt with anyone. They immediately started talking and became very close. Everyone thought there was something between them, many times their friends teased them about looking like a couple, but they both denied it all those times.
But lately something had changed. Y/N was a friend of touch, she liked to hug her friends in general, and Connor was no exception to her. But lately those touches of best friends that used to be given day to day began to bother her. It made her feel weird. Every time she was near him, she felt butterflies in her stomach.
Lately, Connor was feeling the same.
"Oh my God, can you stop now?" An excited Brian interrupts their thoughts. He takes the bottle of wine and hands it to Sylvie across the table.
"What do you mean? Y/N question, indifferent.
"What do I mean? I mean… ”Brian makes a strange gesture with his hands. "That. That you two do"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Connor says nervously as he takes a sip from his glass.
...
"It is time."
"Will they really do this?" Cez asks laughing.
"Yeah, what makes you think we wouldn't?" Shawn asks.
“I don't know, I thought they were joking. I think both are old enough to make their own decisions and take the first step, they are not little kids "
"They're not little kids, but they're stupid." Sylvie slaps Brian on the shoulder after her comment.
"Besides, we're just giving them a little nudge." Says Sofía, Camila's sister.
"It's just a mistletoe, what if they don't want to kiss, anyway?"
"They must do it, it's a tradition, it's the rules" Sinu tells her husband as she begins to hang the mistletoe on the door that divides the kitchen and the living room. She then she walks into the kitchen with Sofia.
"And you support this Sinu, it can't be." Alejandro tells him, following his wife to the kitchen.
"She is part of us, yes." Camila says proudly.
"Where are they now?" Shawn asks Camila.
"Outside"
"What if they already took the first step?" Cez asks half disinterested.
"I don’t think so".
"Ok, I'm going to go upstairs, I don't want to see this show" Cez exclaims as he climbs the stairs.
Y / N POV
Connor and I are sitting in the backyard of Camila's house. He rests his head on my legs while I tangle my fingers in his hair.
"You know what? I've been thinking about something lately. " He says as he puts his hand on mine while I continue stroking his hair.
"What’s it?"
"I don't know, it's something that happens when we're together." He responds as he sits up, pulling away from my touch.
"What do you mean?" Is he he is feeling the same as me?
"I've felt a little ... weird"
"Oh ..."
"But not weird in a bad way, if not that ..."
"I think I know what you're talking about." I shyly say without looking at him.
"Seriously?"
"If I…"
"Connor! Can you come here and help me with something ?!" Sylvie's call interrupts me.
Connor and I look toward the house. The boy gets up first, offering his hand to help me up. We both walked inside the house.
"I think the tree star is a bit crooked, can you help me straighten it?" Sylvie says as she climbs on a chair right next to the tree to reach for the object.
"And why couldn't they help you?" Connor says with a frown pointing to the rest of our friends.
"They don't have the same sense of righteousness that you have."
"Sense of righteousness? What the hell are you talking about? "
"Just, just get at the door and let me know when it's right." Connor snorts as he heads for the door, reluctantly. "There’s good?"
"Yes Sylvie, it’s perfectly straight"
Are you sure?" She asks as she moves the object.
"No! Why did you move it? Now is completely leaning to the left "
"And now?"
“It's totally to the right, are you kidding me?
"Come on Connor, do your part a bit."
"Y/N, can you come help me?" I turn to Connor and stands next to him looking at the Christmas tree.
"Move it to the left ... to the right ... a little more to the left again ..."
"There is!" Connor exclaims, raising his arms.
"Perfect, thanks guys. Now could you see if the object above you is straight?"
I look up laughing after the spectacle of straightening the star on the Christmas tree.
A small mistletoe hung over our heads and my breath caught in my throat.
"Did you really plan this?" Connor asks, glancing at me.
"Completely." Brian admits shamelessly.
"Go ahead, pretend we weren't here"
He turns in my direction and I look at him, having to tilt my head up since he’s taller than me.
"Hey"
"Hey" I barely reply. Does he really want to kiss me? Because I do.
"If I want to," he said, as if he could read my mind. "Do you want? ... Would you like us to kiss? I mean, if you don't want to, you really are not obliged, really the mistletoe is nothing more than a stupid tradition, I will understand you completely if you don't want to kiss me-
Quickly I stand on the balls of my feet and cup her cheeks with both hands to bring her lips closer to me. Her lips are warm against mine, the kiss full of emotion and a little shyness. His hands land quietly on my hips, pulling me toward him so I can wrap his arms around your back. His lips move against mine delicately.
"At last! I can't believe it. ”Brian's voice interrupts our moment.
"Did you have to ruin his moment so soon?" Sylvie reprimands him.
"After such a long time ..." Shawn says.
“You have no right to say that. Camila and you took a hundred times longer than them."
words: 2.4K
warnings: violence, mafia
She just laid there, staring at the ceiling, unsure of whether to cry or laugh. Either way, it was over. Ara had sat her psychology finals, failed them inevitably, and binged on three hours of dramas and ice-cream out of self-pity. Ah, what a life. Rolling over at the sound of her phone, she answered with an empty voice.
'Yeoboseyo?'
'Eonnie~' a voice answered on the opposite end, dripping with honey.
'What do you want, Choi Hyun?' Ara asked, very obviously not in the mood to entertain the younger girl.
'Whatever do you mean?' Hyun exclaimed, feigning offendedness. When Ara gave no reply, she sighed and dropped the act. 'Fine, I'm hungry. Feed me. I'm at the cafe right now.' Of course, Ara knew exactly where she was, and why she was there instead of studying.
'You're procrastinating,' Ara stated simply. There was an incoherent grumble on the other side. Abruptly getting up, Ara headed to her room. 'Welp, if you fail your finals, that's on you. But who am I to say no to the dalgona coffee calling my name?' With that, Ara cut the call and got ready. Within minutes, she was out of the apartment and on her way to their favourite cafe. Once she was outside, she caught sight of Hyun frantically waving at her. She smiled to herself as she headed towards her.
'Annyeong!' Hyun called brightly when she was near. Ara rolled her eyes at Hyun's overly energetic nature. She already knew that all that energy would be diminished by Hyun's next visit to the cafe, which would inevitably be a pity drink.
'I already ordered,' Hyun told Ara. Ara nodded in reply. As they waited, Ara watched the girl. She silently tried prodding at her mind, but Hyun instantly tensed up.
'What the hell. What are you doing?' Hyun growled. Ara instantly regretted her actions, but she didn't admit it. Instead, she glanced away.
'So, I heard you're supervising the hit tonight,' Ara said. Hyun glared at her.
'Yes, I am. You could've asked like a normal person if you wanted to know so bad.' Ara muttered an apology. Within moments, the younger girl softened, unable to keep mad at Ara for too long.
'Anyway,' Hyun said softly, 'you look miserable.' Ara chuckled mirthlessly. 'Do you wanna join tonight?' Ara raised an eyebrow at Hyun's request. She would've said no immediately in any other circumstance, but she needed something to take her mind off the pitiful exams. She considered silently, noting how Hyun watched her much too carefully.
'Come on, I'll just tell the soldiers that you're a new capo-in-training, and none of my capos are stupid enough to tell them otherwise. The soldiers have never seen your face anyway,' Hyun begged.
'Fine,' Ara agreed after a while. The smile that lit up on Hyun's face made it worth it.
'Aigoo~ my baby's so cute,' Ara cooed, squishing Hyun's cheeks. Hyun only pouted at Ara's words but didn't reject her. In the back of her head, Ara wondered how the innocent child in front of her could be someone else entirely given the situation. At that moment, Hyun only seemed like an ordinary college student actively procrastinating from her finals, not a mafia underboss planning her next hit which would involve plenty of bloodshed. Sighing, Ara let go of Hyun's cheeks and sat back down comfortably.
Their drinks didn't take long to arrive. As soon as Hyun had received her's, she subtly sniffed her milkshake before taking the smallest of sips. That was all it took to break the enchanting facade of a normal life that had momentarily manifested in Ara's head. They were anything but ordinary students with ordinary lives. From there, their conversation took a turn into dangerous territory that required them to whisper. By the end of the conversation, quite a number of people were as good as dead.
'You head back to the dorms to study as much as you can before tonight. I'll get to HQ a little early today and figure out the logistics of me joining the hit with Hwa. I'll be seeing you around twelve,' Ara instructed. Hyun nodded, waving her goodbye. Ara waved back and turned to make her way to her headquarters.
The girl used the usual hardware store route to get there. Once she was inside the safety of HQ, she headed straight to the Prep Room. Hwa was already there, getting the designated team for the hit ready. Hwa's eyes momentarily widened at the sight of Ara entering the room unannounced but she quickly composed herself.
'Ah, what are you doing here?' Hwa asked off-handedly.
'baeB sent me to observe the hit as a capo-in-training,' Ara replied, bowing to the soldiers and other caporegimes in the room. They all mumbled their introductions, too focused on their roles to pay attention to her. Ara nodded discreetly at Hwa before strapping on sheaths and filling them up with various weapons from the wall. Once Ara had her twin pistols sitting on her sides, she listened as Hwa delivered a rundown of the mission.
'Listen carefully, everyone,' Hwa ordered, all the attention in the room becoming trained on her. Ara quietly admired the way Hwa managed to command attention so easily. 'Everyone must always remain in contact with me. If at any given moment, the connection is cut, abort mission. We've only managed to figure out around 80% of the schematics of the target building.
'Fortunately, we already have a clear, direct route to and from the area where the girls are kept and a secondary route just in case. But remember, we don't know what surprises are waiting for us, so dessert mission at all costs if you become disconnected with HQ,' Roze explained, handing out their earpieces. She then went over the individual routes and roles.
'Z-' Roze called, almost revealing the mafia boss's identity, 'Zaych, as a capo-in-training, you'll be sticking with the hit supervisor, baeB.' Ara nodded, internally groaning at the annoying name Hwa had come up with. Ara nodded, heading to the hall behind the Prep Room among the rest of the soldiers and capos who were either lounging around or warming up. Trisha, NTMR's main sniper, and one of the capos who knew ZH personally, smirked when Ara approached her.
'So, didn't expect you to be on the mission,' Trisha said nonchalantly, practicing her aim.
'Uni's getting on my nerves,' Ara mumbled in reply. Beside her, RizQueen suddenly materialised.
'So, big boss lady's on the mission?' she asked, her trademark mischievous glint sparkling in her eyes. Ara continued to idly converse with the two until baeB arrived.
The moment Hyun had stepped into the room, a sudden energy took over. The room was ablaze with fiery determination. Without a moment's delay, everyone organised themselves into their squads, ready to take orders.
'Ok girls, this is one of the last few hits before all the labs are destroyed. This one's riskier than the others, so stay alert and always keep in communication with HQ. We're all heading out in five, so be prepared.
'Trisha's squad, you guys take the upper route, keep your distance and alert us on the ground if anything happens. Eliminate any dangers before they can reach us. RizQueen, you and your squad are coming with me on the direct route. Squad three is guarding the outside and waiting along the secondary route in case of an emergency,' baeB ordered. 'Ok, let's go.' Hyun motioned Ara over, nodding subtly and not saying much else.
The drive to the target was short and quiet, everyone reviewing the plan by themselves. Every once in awhile, Ara caught sight of Hoon flying alongside them through the windows. Once they had stepped foot on the land, all of them became eerily quiet, even the loud-mouth of an underboss. With silent motions, baeB had sent all the squads in their separate directions.
baeB made a series of bird-like sounds quietly to Hoon who was perched on her shoulder. Soon enough, the bird took off again, following Trisha's squad. With another nod, they all approached the building, slipping in through an abandoned side door. No doubt, all the security cameras in the vicinity had already been hacked into from back at the base.
'Ok, advance through this door. It'll lead you to a hallway. Take the second left,' Hwa's voice said through Ara's earpiece. The squad looked at each other once before approaching. Ara watched as baeB nudged RizQueen who instantly disappeared into thin air.
They all stuck to the shadows, slinking through until they found the second left. Everything was progressing brilliantly until suddenly, a man in white stepped out of a room. He only had enough time to widen his eyes and open his mouth when one of the soldiers sent a blade flying in his direction. In a matter of seconds, the light left his eyes and his body was slumped against the wall. Without hesitation, the squad kept going.
The slow pace of the hit started to irk Ara. Without warning, she poked baeB, motioning ahead and left without waiting for her reaction. As Ara walked through the lone hallways, she encountered a few more "scientists", but quickly took care of them with a pull of her trigger. Finally, listening to Hwa's directions, she arrived at a large set of double doors. Pushing them open as quietly as she could, her jaw dropped open. Hundreds upon hundreds of beds were lined up against the walls, each with a girl lying in them.
Most of them were asleep, but one who was most likely returning from the bathroom, caught sight of her. Instead of screaming, the girl only wordlessly made her way back to her bed. Before she could, Ara grabbed her arm and pulled her back. The girl didn't resist.
The utter lack of will within the girl stoked an enraged part of Ara. All these girls were broken down until they no longer cared about anything or anyone. They didn't have it in them to care, because if they did, they'd be broken all over again. The hopelessness only reminded Ara of her own lab days. Soon, the rest of the squad had arrived at the hall. They all took a moment to take it all in.
'Ok, now-' Hwa's voice suddenly cut off. Ara immediately turned to look at baeB, but the younger girl's face was a reflection of hers. Everyone around her frantically filed out of the room. Ara tried to call them back, but she had no power over them, not as long as she was "Zaych".
'Tell them to come back. We're almost done, come on. We just need to take them back,' Ara whisper-shouted at baeB. Hyun seemed torn between ordering them back and pulling Ara along with the rest.
'The connection isn't meant to cut. Something's wrong,' baeB said, alert. Even as she talked, a loud screech resonated through the hall. A sudden panic took hold of them all as the underboss shouted one, singular word.
'RUN!' With that, they all turned, some of them even reached the mouth of the secondary exit. baeB, who was at the back along with ZH, grabbed her arm, pulled her through the door, and threw her down. Even though Ara screamed with all her might, desperately trying to grab even a few girls, nothing stopped the explosion that burst through the room. She watched as everything and every person in the room was obliterated into pieces.
From there, she didn't remember much, registering only someone pulling her up and out of the building. Everything around her was chaos and she was stuck in her own bubble of torment. By the time the two squads were out of the building, the rest of it was up in flames.
The van ride to HQ was just a blur, and only once baeB had pulled her out did Ara notice that the girl from the lab was still clinging onto her. A strange spark lit up in her eyes, completely foreign to her sunken face and bony features. Ara didn't want to let go of the girl either, but she couldn't find her voice in time before baeB pulled her away.
Ara followed Hyun into the lowest level of HQ: baeB's personal torture cells.
'We managed to take one of the scientists,' a soldier said, already inside the cell. Next to her, a man in the white lab coat was kneeling. He was bruised and bloody, his clothes singed from the bombing.
'Get out,' baeB growled at the soldier who left in a heartbeat. Cracking her neck, the younger girl's entire body was on fire. The rage that rolled off her was enough to make the man cower. Hyun grabbed the daggers on her belt and held them up against his neck, drawing blood. The maniacal look about her told Ara so much of what Hyun wanted to do, but before she could begin, Ara held a hand out.
Hyun struggled to hold back but stepped back at the boss's order.
'Let me,' Ara whispered, voice hoarse from crying.
She stepped up to the man, holding up his chin.
'Why?' she whispered once. The man, unable to answer only whimpered before the storm hit. Without any warning, Ara ripped through his head with only one question "why?". The screams that came out of his mouth were blood-curdling, but that didn't stop Ara. She didn't care what she found, but she kept pulling away at all his thoughts until he was laying on the floor, his mind too broken to manage his body.
Ara fell to her knees, her own head pounding against her skull and tears streaming down her face. All those girls had spent their whole lives in those wretched labs, getting experimented on ruthlessly and then thrown out when they were of no more use. They didn't deserve any of it, especially not the end they had faced.
A reassuring hand placed itself on Ara's shoulder, calmly guiding her up and out of the cells.
'I'll finish up here. You should go get some rest,' Hyun whispered. Ara nodded, wondering how she would ever be able to rest after losing so many lives right in front of her eyes.
An extra-long chapter!! Hope you guys enjoyed!
And I'll warn everyone right now; if you can't tell already, this story will include many triggering scenes, lots of blood and gore and death. A lot of my characters have gone through several forms of trauma and if anyone is uncomfortable with these themes, I advise you to stop reading.
Other than that, please proceed! :)
Luv y'all
Land Or Sea
Part 1
Genre: A giant mix of angst, fluff and spice if you want to call it that?
Pairing: Lee x Ari
Warnings: Mentions of death... I think that's it?
Word Count: ≈6k total
-My twist on The Little Mermaid for the Tell A Fairytale event hosted by @acewriters
“Ari! Wait for me! You know it’s harder for me to swim with my hurt fin!” I hear from behind me. Looking back I see the bright orange hair covering my friends eyes. Brushing it aside, he huffs at me.
“Oh come on, River. Don’t be such a guppy!” I laugh. My younger friend, though he was almost a whole half a tail taller than me, had hurt his fin two weeks ago and though it had gotten a lot better, he was still slower than me.
“Oh hush you or I’m going to tell Mal that you’re going where you're not supposed to be.” I hear him snicker.
“Go right on ahead, then I’ll tell her that you were with me. Let’s see who’s in the dog house then.” I look behind me at his face. Noticing his lips in a tight line and his eyes glaring knives at me, I grin.
“That’s what I thought.” I snicker.
Mal is my best friend and the royal advisor to my father, Triton, the king of the sea. She is so much fun to be around, but let us get caught in a forbidden area and I’d never hear the end of it. River is her boyfriend, so it’d be double trouble for him… Especially with the hurt fin.
We push a little further, finally noticing the sunken ship we’d been looking for.
“There it is, River!” I smile, waving him forward to hurry.
"You know, if we get caught. Your father is going to throw us in the dungeon for a week." He smiles.
"That's why we can't get caught. Duh."
Swimming to the window, I peek inside. "AH!" jump back as an eel slides out. Grasping my chest, I hear River behind me laughing hysterically. Shooting him a look, I slip through the window. He stands guard as I search to see what I can find. Seeing something shine on the floor out of the corner of my eye, I look over to notice a ballerina figurine.
I pick it up, putting it in the bag on my back.
"Ari, come on. The waters are getting darker. We need to get back."
"Just 5 more minutes."
"Ari, now." He said, starting to get agitated.
"5 more minutes Ri!" I plead.
"Ariel! Let's go now!" He demanded.
"Fine!" I grumble, "I swear."
Heading back out of the window, I noticed it had gotten darker. It looked like there was a storm rolling in, but there were no signs of it when we came this way.
"Alright, we need to hurry back." I say, avoiding his 'I told you so' gaze.
Swimming as fast as he could, I tried to help him.
"Okay, this is my bad. We should have left earlier."
"I couldn't have left earlier. Now, let's get moving. Mal is going to have our tails for this."
Right, I’d had to wait on him because he’d wanted to spend time with Mal before she had to go to my father’s council meeting. Those things always lasted forever.
Finally reaching the city, we parted ways and I headed home. Swimming in the door, I notice Mal in the living room.
"We need to talk." She says.
We go up to my room and I place my bag on my desk.
"You missed the meeting today."
"What meeting? I never go- Oh snap! I completely forgot I was supposed to be there today. I'm sorry Mal!" I say, feeling horrid.
"Your father is furious. You may want to apologize to him, not me. I have a feeling someone else is going to be apologizing to me."
"I will… I'm going."
-------------------
Apologizing to my father had been a failure. I'd spent most of the evening trying to apologize. I'm grounded, even though I'm an adult. The joy of being a princess, you never fully escaped.
I'd made my way back to my room after that chaos and collapsed on my bed. Looking out of my window, I see something flickering at the top of the water.
It was distant but I got curious. Swimming closer, I notice it's flames! I swim up. There's pieces of wood and trinkets falling everywhere now, I have to dodge them.
I poke my head above the water and hear men screaming for someone from a lifeboat.
"Lee! Lee? Where are you?" They yell. They look around frantically, but never see me or the man. They head away. I'm assuming giving up hope.
I begin wandering around and looking, pushing pieces out of my way.
I happen to notice him stuck on a piece of wood drifting off in the opposite direction. He had been hit by something, knocking him out and had a cut on his head.
"Oh! Wait!" But they were already too far gone. I decide to take him myself. I grab the wood and push him in the direction of the beach a few miles away. It wasn't easy but I managed. He weighed more than he looked and I'm not huge myself, but I finally made it to shore. The sun was coming up now. The only thing I could do was drag him off the wood and onto what little sand I could get to.
He was beautiful. Brown hair that was fluffy after it had dried on the way here, sharp features and a small scar on his left side of his face.
He groaned.
Oh no… I start to head back to the water.
His eyes flutter open and look directly at me, his brown eyes shining in the morning sun, "You saved me."
"I did. If not you would have drowned. Now, I have to leave. I'm sorry."
"Wait!"
It was too late, I was already in the water and swimming home.
Wow. A human. A man. A gorgeous one at that…
I make my way into my bedroom window and get under my blankets, hoping nobody noticed I was missing.
"Where have you been?" I hear from the corner of my room. I jump and look over.
"River! You can't do that to someone!"
"Answer the question, Ari."
"I took a swim. Now I'm going back to sleep."
"Yeah okay. If you say so." He swims out of the window, agitated and I lay there daydreaming of the man I saved.
The next few days that passed, all I could see was his face. I want to see him again. I will. I'll go and see him tonight! I manage to keep my excitement down to a minimum, only River and Mal notice. Which is normal because I spend a lot of time with them.
I go to bed early, and sneak out. Swimming until I arrive at the beach where I'd left him. He was walking along it. His brown hair straight, in a white sweater and slacks. He was holding his shoes as he walked, feeling the sand on his feet. I wish I could do that.
He looks my way and I hide behind a rock.
"Hello? I saw you! Please don't be shy!"
"I'm sorry! I'm not supposed to be here! It's forbidden!" I yell to him from behind the rock.
"But you saved me."
"I did and I'd do it again."
"At least tell me your name."
"I'm sorry, I have to go."
"Please!"
I'd gone under before I could say more. I feel bad about leaving him standing there so I decide to go back there tonight to see if he was there. Lo’ and behold, he was. I decide to swim close enough so he could see me.
“What’s your name?” Lee asks, wide brown eyes looking in my direction, as if he’s not believing what he’s seeing.
“Why should I tell you? So you can tell all your friends of my existence and they can hunt me down?” I say.
“No! Of course not! I’m in awe… I want to thank the woman that saved my life, properly.” My mouth opens in shock as he continues, “I saw a glimpse of you last time, I just want to know your name to match your face. Which is much more beautiful up close, if I may say.”
“Ariel.”
“Ariel? Well, it’s so nice to meet you Ariel. Thank you for risking your life to save mine.” He smiles.
“Ari.” I say, smiling, “Call me Ari.”
I went back the next few nights, singing to signal him that I’d arrived, I waited for him to come out. He hears me and comes out, smiling, coming to sit on the rock at our meeting spot. We talk until he’s so tired he couldn’t keep his eyes open and I had to tell him I’d come back tomorrow because I need to get back before my father wakes. We continued this for a few weeks and I grew to love talking to him. He was funny and handsome and I became comfortable with him. He’s the first human to see me, the first human I felt a connection to.
I couldn’t hide my happiness any longer, I had to tell someone. I knock on Mal’s door, after returning from my visit with Lee, so it was around 6 a.m. River answers, with a strange look on his face.
“What are you doing here so early and why are you so smiley?” He asks.
“I need to talk to your girlfriend.”
“Alright, come in.” He says, moving aside so I can slip by, “she’s in the bedroom still.”
“Okay, thank you.”
Opening their bedroom door, I see Mal laying in bed, reading. She’s normally up and ready for work by now.
“Hey. You’re here early this morning.” She chuckles, closing her book.
“Yes, I am. I haven’t been to bed yet,” My smile fades, worrying about her. “Are you okay? Normally you are about to come to the palace. You’ve felt sick for a few weeks lately.”
“I’m fine, I just needed a day off. I was grateful your father approved,”
“Of course he would! You’re like a daughter to him, not just his advisor. He takes anything that you say seriously. So if you needed a day, he’d do it in a heartbeat.” I smile.
She smiles at me and pats my hand, “You guys and Riv are the only family I have, I’m happy with that. Now tell me, why did you come in here smiling to no end.
“It’s a slightly long story. Do you have time? And remember, this is best friend territory, okay? Completely sworn to secrecy, until death”
“I have all day. Well, as much as needed. I’d like to stay in this bed all day if possible.” She smiles and nods. I chuckle and dive into my story about everything, starting with the shipwreck.
Her face went from mortified that I was being so careless, to understanding. To say she was mad at first, was an understatement…
“Why would you do this, repeatedly, without telling anyone Ariel? Do you know how stupid that was? You could have been hurt!” She panics, causing River to come in and check on her.
“Please, Mal, calm down. Let me explain.” She calms down, but River doesn’t want to leave her side. Mal reassures him she’s fine now and leaves us to finish our talk. She breathes deep a few times and signals me to continue.
I explain what has been going on and the talks Lee and I have had. About how he is an only child, and his parents passed away when he was in school far away. How he’s managing the small kingdom he runs, on his own. I also explain that he’s seen me and that he is the type, like she, to hold that secret until death. She isn’t happy that I showed myself to a human, but she understands taking leaps of faith because Mal and River were never supposed to be together either. Seeing her understand what I’m dealing with and being there for me even though she’s not happy with the situation, I feel tears in my eyes. She’s genuinely happy for me. And her and River’s hopeful love story of forbidden love, leads me into my next dilemma.
I also tell her that I think I love him,,,
She smiles widely, “I always tell you not to do what I’ve done. Seems you one upped me, in that department anyway. You fell for a human, but I have my own secret to tell you.” I smile and laugh. Grabbing the pillow beside her and smacking her with it playfully.
“Someone has to make you look good. What is your secret? Tell me. Tell me.”
She leans forward and whispers in my ear. My eyes get wide and I’m so happy that I could scream. She shushes me and I hold in my excitement.
“Mhmm. Sure. So as your best friend, when are you going back to meet him?”
“Tonight. I really need to get home to sleep for a while.” I laugh looking at the time, 8:43 a.m.
“Yeah, you may want to, in case your dad looks for you this morning.” She laughs.
River knocks on the door and pokes his head in, “May I have my girlfriend back now?”
“Yes, you may. I was just about to leave.” I smile, getting up and giving her a hug, “Thank you for understanding.”
She nods, “Just remember to let me know some way that you’re going. I don’t care if you leave a pebble on my windowsill.”
I laugh but agree and head home, finding my bed and drifting off to sleep within minutes. I wake up to eat before slipping out for the night. I swing by Mal’s and place a pebble I’d painted a yellow smiley face with a blue heart, on her window; smiling I take off to meet Lee.
I began to sing when I went tonight, hoping he'd hear me and appear, yet he didn’t… I decide to wait for him. I'm beginning to worry after a few hours of him not showing...
"He's not here my dear." I hear behind me. Spinning around, I see the sea witch.
"Why? What's going on?"
"He's sick, my dear."
"Sick? Sick how!?"
"He fell ill yesterday morning."
"But that's impossible! I spoke to him just last night!"
"Well, he must have hidden it really well or really wanted to talk to you."
"Oh no. No! I have to get to him. I have to help him."
I need to find a way. I would.
“I'm sorry. I've got to go." I start to go around the witch to get home.
"I can help him."
"What do you mean you can help him?" I ask, cautiously.
"I can fix him for a price."
“What price?” I ask, more nervous this time.
“Give me your voice and I’ll fix him right now.” she demands.
“You could do that?”
“Yes, I could.”
“I- I don’t know if I could do that.”
“Well, if you decide to. Follow the current south from the castle. I assume you know how to get there though.”
I nod and take off home.
I swim as fast as I can and make it back before dawn. Instead of going home, I make a stop at Mal’s. I need to talk to her. Knocking on her door, I realize she may still be asleep, even though she gets up early, it’s still too early for her.
To my surprise, she answers the door…”Ari, what are you doing here? Is everything alright at the castle?” she asks, her eyes growing worrisome.
“At the castle, yes. But, I need your advice as my best friend and not the royal advisor.” I say.
She asks me to come in and I begin telling her everything. River is still asleep, so it’s like old times.
“So, you’re saying that you really love him? Even though you barely know him and may never know him in any other way and you want to help him?” She asks, “And yes, I know you feel like you know him through your talks.”
“Yes. And I know it sounds weird, but I have to.”
“Best friend’s advice only? Don’t go to the witch. She’s mean and cruel. Scope the beach out and make sure she’s not lying. Maybe your father would grant you time on land, if you told him it was to only make sure he was okay?” she suggests.
“Okay, I’ll talk to father when I get home. Thank you, Mal.”
“You’re welcome, Ari. And do me a favor, don’t take River out so far next time. His fin is doing better, but it’s been aching again for the past few days.” She smiles, coming to hug me and send me on my way.
“You got it. Thanks again.” I hug her back and head home.
Father was already awake and in the dining area. I decided to tell him the truth. Even if it meant getting punished.
“You did what?” He demands, getting angry.
“Father, please.” I plead, “I told you what I did and I’ve found out he’s sick. I need to see him and help.”
“You disobeyed me too many times, Ariel. Absolutely not! Why should I even remotely want to do this for you?”
“Because I love him! And I will do this one way or another Father, please. I’m asking for your help, not the help I’ve been offered already, but I will go to her if that’s the only option I have.”
“You think you love him. What other offer?” he says, angrily.
I stand tall, even though my insides are twisting from anxiety, “The sea witch.”
“Ariel, you will do no such thing! She’s a witch and an evil one at that!” He says, getting up from his seat.
“I will father. I may be a princess, but I am also an adult.”
“Ariel…” He says, hurt by my words.
I turn and walk out, hoping he’ll think about it and agree.
“Wait,” he says and I turn around, “I will help you, on one condition.”
“What? Anything, please.”
“I will grant you legs in order to go help him for 2 days and only two. But at the end of the second day, you will come back home. No questions or complaints. You will come back home and resume your duties as princess.”
“Deal.” I say, without hesitation.
With reluctance, even after I promise to come back, my father agrees to take me at the end of the night.
“Ariel, what are you planning on doing?” I hear as I come out of the dining area, where father had been eating breakfast. I look around and see River, arms crossed, looking at me.
“I’m doing what I have to do,” I reply.
“Mal told me. You don’t have to do this. You don’t know this man.”
“I do, River. I really do. Please don’t do this. Mal trusts me, that’s all I’m asking from you.” I say, sadly.
He shakes his head at me. “I hope so.”
He leaves and I get things ready and make some medicine for Lee, hoping it will work better than human medicine. I get completely ready and when I finish, I decide to nap.
“Ariel, wake up.” I hear and I shift in my bed.
“Ariel.” I hear again, opening my eyes slowly.
“What is it father?” I ask.
“Are you still wanting to go?” He asks. I jump up and grab my bag and the dress I was planning to wear.
“I’m ready.” I say, in a serious tone.
He smiles, “You really are willing to do this?
“It’s the easiest decision of my life, Father.” I smile at him.
“You really are your mother’s daughter. The most like her out of you and your sisters.”
I feel tears sting my eyes. My mother had fallen ill after she had me and passed. I never knew her like my 4 sisters did and always wondered. I hug my father tightly, happy to hear what he told me.
“Now, come Ariel, let’s get this done.”
I nod and we set out for the beach where I had met Lee on many nights and talked until early morning. We swim for a while, not bothered by the silence between us. Once we get there, I speak first, “This is it, What do I do now?” I ask, looking at my father.
“Go to him, do what you must and be back in two days' time. I will be waiting here at the same time as now.” He says and I smile and hug him tightly.
“Thank you. I love you.” I say, quietly.
I head close to shore to where I could touch sand and my father swirls his trident on top of the water. Feeling weird sensations in my fins, I look down, only to notice legs. Human legs… I smile, looking up at my father and wave my toes at him.
He laughs, tossing my bag at me. I grab the blue dress wrapped around my bag and slip it on, it’s wet, but it’ll dry soon enough.
“Be safe and strong, my darling Ariel. I will see you soon.” He says, smiling sadly and disappearing under the water to return to our home.
ok, so listen up hoes, y’all abt 2 get educated.
first and foremost, he was bEST libero in middle school????? why are we ignoring this?? i don’t hear ppl talking abt this enough.
bEST LIBERO IN MIYAGI AS A MIDDLE SCHOOLER! y’all wish u were on his lvl.
and even though he was a talented fucker, he still decided to go to karasuno just for the uNIFORMS!!
this just shows he knows that getting into a powerhouse school doesn’t mean anything!! umm if that ain’t some big brain idk what is.
he has priorities and getting into a powerhouse school wasn’t one of them cuz he knew he would strive on any playing ground 😤
but uniforms were one of his priorities and i will not comment about that.
also can we talk abt how he was introduced into the series
like the gR8 GUARDIAN DEITY OF KARASUNO!!
and he turns out to be a precious 160cm bby who gets soft af when u call him senpai.
if that doesn’t make u 🥺, ur heartless.
and also loyalty??? can we talk abt how loyal his ass is like ???
he was abt to give up his entire volleyball career cz asahi was being a pussy abt to give up hIS career :((
and the fact he only would play when the ace is there, my heart cant 🥺
manz got suspended for his manz. if that ain’t true love idk what is.
also we can never forget..
roRINGUUU SANDAA (again!!)
jUsT tAKE mY mOnEY aNd leAVE mY hEaRt aLonE
also, also!! when we first saw his hair down!!!! omg sinsdjdjjdj
like us clowns thought it was a ghost or some shiz like that
but it just turns out to be the cutest form of noya!!! like that was uwu galour
i uwued so hard when i saw him with his hair down like adjdjdjdj
also can we talk abt noya fangirling over yaku during their practice match with nekoma, hes so pure 🥰
moving on, i will never, and i mean nEVER, stop talking abt noya in karasuno vs. dateko
season 1 episode 18,, i will never forget you
if u don’t know what i’m talking abt, first of all ur an uncultured swine.
i’m talking abt that leGENDARY feet receive
like uGHH, i busted a pHat nut just thinking abt that scene
and his “aSAHI-SAN” in that scene makes me cry like an lil bitch
omg and also, i think we all can agree noya and bokuto wouldve been bestest of friends if he went to the 3rd gym 😤
kinda mad hq didn’t give us that interaction, but i digress.
adding on, he caN SET???
like he’s already the best libero in the prefecture and now he abt to be the best seTTER
kags better watch out cuz nishinoya abt to come for his ass
also, i have a headcanon of noya in johzenji.. like for some reason i think he would fit in johzenji perfectly???
ok, let’s start talking abt s3 cuz this list is alr getting wayyy too long. although it should be longer cuz noya’s perfections are endless.
ok imo, in the battle with shiratorizawa and karasuno, noya and tsukki were the mfing mVPs
no i do not take construtive criticism.
like hoes, u don’t understand, we got the beST noya quotes in that match.
“Alright! There's nothing to be scared of! You guys just keep looking straight ahead. I'll guard your backs with my life if I have to!”
ok wait a minute as i cry in the corner of my trash can.
aNd ALSO THAT DOUBLE RECEIVE
tHAT LEGENDARY DOUBLE RECEIVE
oML THAT DOUBLE RECEIVE
i WILL NOT STFU ABOUT THAT DOUBLE RECEIVE—
also he got everyone to acknowledge, he’s the only one on the same lvl as ushiwaka???
why tf are y’alls not tALKING abt this
that should be an official conversation starter.
ok imma stop this list now, cuz it’s getting longer than it needs to be no it’s not
ending statement: y’all should love the one and only karasuno’s guardian deity cuz he deserves all the love in the world <3
.  . ˚ ✧ ·   . *
a/n: ok, so i didn’t mean for this list to be this long.. i expected it to be this short thing, but once i started talking abt my precious bby i couldn’t stop. so here it is a character appreciation post for the one and only kewlest boi nishinoya. pls love and appreciate him as much as possible. <33 also akaashi i still love u, this was just something i had to do.
Chapter 2/?
Note:
Apologies for the delay. I'm trying to develop different works simultaneously and things slip from my grasp at times but I'm working on a schedule so hopefully I'll be able to update more regularly from now on.
This is a very subtle chapter (emotion wise) cause I'm planing on packing quite a bit of information into the next one. Hope we're all fans of dramatic irony cause this fic is about to have you hating me. 😂💜
Enjoy 😍
****** Cliffhanger Warning ******
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
[Barry]
“Mind if I join you Mr. Allen?”
Her breath caresses his ear and Barry freezes mid twiddle. The chip he had been playing with slips from his grasp and clatters onto the table just as the ball bounces into its final destination on the wheel. The crowd around cheers, celebrating yet another of his victories but Barry is much too shocked to react.
“What luck,” She mewls, settling down on the chair beside him. The ghostly voice of affairs past sends shivers down his spine and he suddenly loses track of where he is. As he looks over at the lean legs crossed beside him he swallows down the knot forming in his throat, a distant memory fluttering to the surface.
Those same legs wrapped around his naked body as he looked up into brown cesspool eyes that burned with a lust filled glow. His surroundings grow hot as his body comes to life with the memory of the silk smoothness of her skin. The gentle teasing of her touch. The searing hunger of her kiss.
Barry tries, to no avail, to find the courage to look up at her face as a subtle pang begins to prick at his heart. It burns from a distance hurting more and more the closer it gets. Just before it breaks through and consumes him completely, she rests her dainty hand over his heart and the burn seems to die out, replaced with a fire of a different kind. Somehow it doesn’t come as a surprise that after all this time his body still has this strong a reaction to her. He’s been faithful to her despite the fact that they are no longer an item. He can’t bring himself to find love in another woman’s arms. To lose himself in eyes that aren’t hers. To explore the secrets of a body that doesn’t belong to her. Heartache or not, he loves her and the distance has only made his heart (and other body parts) grow fonder.
“Wanna get out of here?” she whispers into his ear and his heart nearly leaps out of his chest. The sound of her voice drips like water on his deserted body, reviving a part of him that died in his youth. He thought he’d never hear her voice again and now he doesn’t want it to go away. It’s all he can do to close his eyes and nod. His nose recognises the scent of her perfume, further reactivating a part of him that has been dormant for almost six years. A kiss lands on his cheek, the feel of her soft lips on his skin resembling the feeling of returning home.
“Iris,” her name rolls off his tongue for the first time in six years. It feels like singing to an old song he used to love.
“Come with me – Barry,” She whispers and a chill runs through him at the sound of his name on her voice. He nods, unable to speak but just before he stands he feels a sharp pain on his cheek. His hand flies to his face instinctively and his fingers come back bloody.
“Shit,” Iris curses under her breath before slipping off her heels and grabbing onto his hand.
“We need to go! Now!”
Before Barry can register what’s happening her arm is interlocked with his and she’s pulling him up from his seat.
“Wha-wha. What’s going on?” he stutters as she holds him tightly and leans in to him.
“Get ready to run,” She whispers but before he can ask her why she unearths a pistol from her clutch bag and fires one warning shot into the air. A stampede ensues and she yells:
“Run!”
Her hand finds his in the scuffle and they take off, heading for the exits.
“West!” A familiar voice behind them yells but Iris barely flinches as she leads them through the hysteric crowd. They make it into the parking lot and she looks around frantic then announces:
“I think we lost them.” She zips her head towards him and demands:
“Where’s your car?”
“Iris, what’s going on?” he asks between breaths. His emotions are running from nervous to happy to scared shitless, all within the same space of time.
“Barry we have no time for this right now. Where is your car?!” She insists with urgency and he takes out his keys and presses one of the three buttons on the remote. The sound of a car alarm being deactivated rings out through the space and seconds later a red Audi in mint condition breaks in front of them. She eye’s the vehicle in shock and a prideful grin spreads over Barry’s lips as he opens the passenger’s side door for her and says:
“After you.”
The shock melts from her features and the rigid determination takes over so naturally that he finds it almost disconcerting. Quick as a humming bird, she snatches the keys from him and walks around to the other side declaring:
“I’m driving.”
This time it’s Barry’s eyes that widen, though less in shock and more in fear.
“I – I’m not sure that’s s-such a good idea.” He advises but she gets in anyway and starts adjusting the seat.
“Iris, I really think you should let me…”
“Iris!” the same voice from before cuts his statement short and this time he recognises it all too well.
“Joe?” he asks dumbfounded, turning around to make sure his ears aren’t deceiving him. Low and behold Joe West is running towards them with a gun aimed straight at Barry’s head.
“Get in!” Iris yells as she starts the car and Barry obeys without hesitation. As soon as he slams his door shut she puts the car into drive and steps on the gas. She manoeuvres her way around the parking lot with the ease of a professional racer and Barry has to close his eyes to concentrate on not letting his heart jump out of his mouth. As soon as they reach the road she increases her velocity, meandering through the late night city traffic without breaking a sweat, the only sign of her effort being the crease of concentration on her brow.
Iris drives on like a speed demon till they turn off into the highway where she slows it down an insignificant notch.
“You can open your eyes now,” She says but Barry shakes his head in refusal.
“I’m not ready to look death in the eyes just yet.” He breathes out tremulously and she chuckles, almost disdainfully. Despite the stand-offish nature of the sound, it seems soft on his ears and excites him enough that he opens his eyes and stares at her, his fear completely forgotten.
“Hate to break it to yah Allen, but you just did.” She points out with an unconvincing smile.
“Um, yeah come to think of it… Why was your dad trying to kill me?” he asks, confusion making his voice climb a few octaves.
“I don’t know.” She responds curtly, the tension noticeable in her posture.
“But you knew that he was coming to kill me?” he asks the obvious.
“Yes.” Is her cold reply.
“Then how do you not know why?” he presses.
“I just don’t.” She responds, her tone still even.
“So…” he swallows, afraid of what he has to ask next.
“Why did you save me?”
Silence.
“I mean not that I’m not grateful or anything. But what if he had a motive? What if I were like a really bad guy and put a lot of people in danger?” he hurries to fill the sound gap, tripping over his words that sound unconvincing even to his own ears. Still, she doesn’t answer.
Iris keeps her eyes trained on the road ahead, her lips pressed into a thin line almost as if she’s containing herself. Trying to keep a restless secret in. Barry’s heart sinks. Hopeless as it may be, he still held on to a sliver of hope that a reunion was underway. That she would pull up someplace in the middle of no where and tell him that she made a mistake six years ago.
That she still loves him.
It might seem pathetic but he’d hold her then. He’d take her into his arms and kiss her so deeply he’d take away every thought and memory of time having passed. It would be like she never left, like she’d always been right there. Because truth be told she never did.
She haunted his head and weighed down his heart every second of every day since she said goodbye. Every moment he had to himself was spent turning over the leaves of their relationship, searching (in vain) for some clue to explain her sudden and rash action. It still doesn’t make sense, and now here she is, an arm’s stretch away from him. Every answer he’s been searching for all this time imprisoned behind her sealed red lips.
He wants to push but he fears that might make her even more guarded than she already is so he simply sighs and leans back into his seat.
“Can you at least tell me where you’re taking me?” he asks dully.
“Freeland.” She answers, short but not so sweet.
“Wait what? That’s, that’s like a three hour drive away. Why so far? Why not Star City? Or, or Keystone?” he asks worried.
“None of those cities include a place I can keep you safe in and I can’t have you bunking with people you know,” She answers, her tone matter-of-fact.
“Why the hell not?” he asks confused.
“Because at the moment your life is in danger and the people in your life are probably the reason why.” She answers her tone still steady.
“The people in my life? Are we forgetting the part where your father is the one that wanted to splatter my brain matter on the casino parking lot floor?” he asks incredulous, growing frustrated with all the confusion. Without waiting for a response he adds:
“And, I know you. I mean, how do I know you’re not taking me straight to him? That you’re not driving me to my death right this second?” She whispers
He bites into the inside of his lip, drawing blood, as she suddenly comes to a halt in the middle of the road. To their luck, the highway is practically deserted. She turns on the hazard lights and shifts in her seat to face him, her glare murderous.
“Allen? Are you or are you not a genius?” She asks and he diverts his gaze as his cheeks heat up at the compliment hidden in her question.
“Well I wouldn’t say I’m a genius exactly…” he bashfully stumbles over his words and she cuts him off with a:
“Just answer the question!”
“Yes,” he answers wide eyed.
“So does your genius brain think that there is a rational explanation as to why I would waltz into a casino and cause a full on public panic to get you out of my dad’s range of fire just to drive you two towns away to him?” She asks, her attitude biting away at his ego.
“Well when you put it like that…” he hangs his head.
“Allen!”
“No, there is no rational explanation.”
“Now that, that’s out of the way let me tell you something about myself. I’m not an irrational person. I don’t have time to make irrational decisions. So please don’t ever question my actions again.” She instructs and he keeps his head down as a silent,
“I’m sorry,” escapes his lips.
Iris readjusts her seating position and puts the car back into drive, leaving Barry feeling like a little kid in the principals office. The barely there purr of the car’s engine is the only sound between them as they take on the open road. In an attempt to make small talk he asks:
“Why are you calling me Allen all of a sudden? I preferred it when you called me by my name.”
“That was just a strategy to get you out of there. I knew that, considering our history, if I approached you under the guise of friendship it would be easier to lure you to safety. But you’re aware of the danger you face now so theirs no need for me to be gentle or manipulative. Barry’s too personal and Bartholomew’s too long. So Allen it is.” She responds, once again shutting down his attempt at starting a conversation with her precise answers. All the while her face remains stern, not even a twitch to betray her inner most thoughts.
“Too personal?” he asks in disbelief and an incredulous scoff rattles his chest, only barely hiding the sting her alienating words have caused.
“Wow. Six years apart and suddenly we’re strangers, huh?” he asks.
“Six years is a long time. People change.” She responds, and he blinks unable to formulate words as the sting turns into a full blown stab in his heart. Suddenly, his greatest fear is confirmed.
*She doesn’t love me anymore.*
The thought hits him like a slap to the face, crashing him back into reality. In to the pain he felt six years ago as he watched her run away from him.
“Nothing’s changed for me,” he whispers under his breath wondering if she heard it but too heartbroken to make sure. Instead he leans back and rests his head on the head rest, turning it so as to look at the rapidly changing scenery through the window. Silence takes over once more and this time he makes no attempt to fill it.
With no adrenaline left in his body, and the weight of his heavy heart seeming like an anchor trying to pull him under, Barry gives in to the physical exhaustion that seeps into his bones and drifts off too sleep.
“Barry? Barry, honey wake up you’re home.” She shakes him gently and he opens one groggy eye, then closes it again, a sleepy smile crossing his lips. Iris chuckles. After the late practise he’s just had he really is that tired but hearing Iris laugh is a much better reason to pretend to sleep, in his book.
“Are you finally awake?” She asks playfully, poking his side and Barry tries to snuff out a ticklish giggle.
“No,” he responds instead.
“Oh really?” She asks, her tone changing to sound a little more dangerous. Barry hears the sound of his seat belt being unbuckled before he feels the strap return to its place by the door. A rustle follows that peaks his curiosity but he stubbornly keeps his eyes closed.
The warmth of her body envelopes him suddenly and he feels her straddle his lap.
“If you’re so asleep you won’t feel me doing this then,” She whispers then her lips close over his. Instinctively he plants his hands around her waist and is surprised when he’s met with bare skin.
“Ah, ah, ah. You’re asleep remember? You’re not supposed to react.” She says, pulling his hands from her waist and keeping them at his sides. Iris trails kisses down his jaw to his neck, teasing him in a devilish way only she knows how.
“Iris,” he hisses, when she grazes his sensitive skin with her teeth. In one swift motion he frees himself from her hold and wraps his arms around her, pressing her to him as he attacks her lips. She laughs against his lips, planting her hands on his chest and applying enough force to pull herself from his embrace.
“Look who’s awake?” She says breathlessly, a triumphant grin playing on her lips. Barry finally opens his eyes and takes in the sight in front of him (or rather on top of him). Iris is sitting on his lap, completely shirtless save for her bright yellow, lace bra that compliments the chocolate of her skin. For a while he simply looks at her, mesmerised by the brilliance of her smile and the way her long locks fall to the side as she tilts her head ever so slightly. The street lights bathe her skin in orange rays that stream in from the windshield behind her. It all seems like a dream.
“What’s on your mind?” She asks, bringing his focus back into the real world and he does his best to offer her, his most charming smile but can’t manoeuvre his facial muscles to express anything but awe.
“That I wish I could wake up to you everyday.” He answers and her smile broadens.
“Let’s get through high school first then maybe we can arrange that.” She suggests while leaning into him and kissing him, soft and lingering.
Barry closes his eyes, losing himself in the feeling of her on him…
“Hey, wake up. We’re here.” Iris wakes him suddenly, her voice familiar but her tone far colder. Yet, still under the fog of sleep Barry blinks his eyes open and finds her hovering above him. She’s standing by his door, leaning over him, half in the car half out. The slightly orange tint, courtesy of the lights take him back to his dream and still shrouded in a cloud of incoherence Barry places his hand around the back of her neck and pulls her down for a kiss.
Bad Influence
~
You'd held him like a child.
He hadn't been able to say anything else, the unspoken words threatening to break him down.
So you had held him, swallowing back your tears for his sake and rocking him back and forth.
You hadn't pushed him to talk any further, scared of making him relive the experience all over again.
Some moments later, the nurses had come into the room and urged him to use the wheelchair and he had never left your eyes for a second, even when the door closed behind him.
You were now left with a feeling of emptiness that no other person could fill.
You just couldn't wrap your head around the fact that he had killed a person for you.
A despicable, evil, but living person nonetheless.
Just how far could Jungkook go for your sake? you thought.
"I hope you're feeling better by now."
You turn your head to the side and see Manager Sejin sitting on the same chair.
You hadn't even noticed him, too absorbed into the swirling vortex of thoughts in your mind.
There's a smile on his lips but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Good. Then we can continue."
He pulls his chair close to your bed and props his elbows on his knees.
"You do realize you have caused us a lot of trouble, right?" he begins.
You fail to look him in the eye as the embarrassment of recent events causes heat to rise in your face.
"I know and I am really sorry."
"Just being sorry isn't enough, though. I would've let you off the hook if you had brought these things only to yourself but the problem is, you haven't.
You've made the other members get caught up into your situations."
As you slowly raise your head, you notice that this isn't just a normal scolding session. Sejin wasn't gonna let this go with just a couple of warnings.
The guy was serious about this and you had to admit, he was right.
Jungkook had had to kill someone because of you.
You wished you had died instead.
"First, I get notified by the bodyguards that you had thrown a tantrum at the beach, unnecessarily looking for Jimin when he was safe and sound just a little further. Then, you get drunk as a skunk, making us delete all the footage ,and let's not even mention the childish swearing and cussing."
You open your mouth to say something, but no words come out.
What could you possibly tell him?
He was right about everything.
"Did you know what Jungkook had to do? He said that when the man came back, he tried to kidnap you again. While they were brawling, Jungkook had
grabbed a rock and smashed it into his skull."
You stare at him, mouth agape.
Jungkook...
"He was in a state of shock because of what he'd done, but he managed to pull himself together for you. And you don't even know what he went through because you've been unconscious for two days".
He sighs and lowers his tone a little bit, trying not to get too carried away.
"I know that not everything that happened is your fault. Jungkook said he was the one who pushed you to go out of the bodyguards' sight, but that doesn't justify your actions.
You should realize that the boys, especially Jungkook, tend to be more reckless when they're around you. I don't know if it is to prove you something or just because they want to."
He glares at you with daggers shooting from his eyes.
"I also noticed that you've become rather close with him."
You duck your head again in shame. He had almost caught you red-handed a while ago.
"Listen, Y/N. I'm going to be honest with you. You're really good at your job. You can sing, dance and perform perfectly, but you're no good for the boys.
You're a bad influence."
There they were.
The words you had been expecting.
You'd figured out that it was a matter of time before he'd say them.
You muster up the courage to raise your head as a final act of maintaining your dignity.
There's no emotion in your words - no hate, no hard feelings. Just pure professionalism.
"I'm really sorry about everything. I'll pack up my bags as soon as they remove my bandages."
He nods once and you can't help but almost cringe at his sigh of obvious satisfaction.
"It was nice knowing you, Y/N-ssi." he says and offers a hand for you to shake on.
You extend yours and fight the urge to squeeze it harder than you have to.
He rises from his seat and leaves the room.
You felt like someone had ripped a chunk from your heart and shredded it to pieces.
No more concerts, no more shows, no more shooting, no more fun time spending with the boys.
No more family.
It was time for you to leave the group.
* * *
"So, what was so urgent that you called all of us here?"
You're stalling for time, not knowing how to say it to them, and Namjoon wasn't making it any easier with those pretty eyes of his boring into you.
"I have been thinking a lot lately." you say. "And I've noticed that there are so many things that I have to fix."
"Like what?" Jin asks.
"My life. It's pretty much in shambles right now."
"Uh-oh, I think the nurses must have put something into her medicine." Taehyung says.
"I'm not joking, hyung. This is serious."
"Is this because of the accident? We thought you'd gotten over it by now." Jimin approaches you with worried eyes.
"It's not just that. Everything I've done has gone for the worse and I don't feel well."
"Is there something bothering you? Are you sick?"
"No, I just-"
"What exactly are you trying to say?" Namjoon insists.
"I'm saying that I need to take a break."
"For how long?" Yoongi asks.
"Forever."
"What?!" Taehyung exclaims.
The others echo him and you're left with their constant buzzing into your ears, words that you can't discern.
"What do you mean by forever? Is this some kind of joke?"
You say nothing.
"Y/N, we know you feel bad about what Jungkook did but it was not your fault."
Jimin looks at you sympathetically and you almost drop your guard, almost tell him that it was not your choice, that you had to do this because of them.
You'd realized they wouldn't let you go if you told them the truth so you had to improvise. Let them think you were leaving the group to satisfy your own ego. Be selfish for once.
It was the only way they could carry on without you.
"I know that, hyung. But I don't feel like doing this anymore. I think I'm gonna do things on my own from now on."
Hurt flashes in his eyes and you can feel your heart being shattered into a million pieces.
"You wanna go solo?" Jin asks.
You still say nothing.
"But we've been together for so long." Taehyung pleads.
They look at you expectantly, begging for you to at least show some emotion, except for Namjoon, who can't seem to take his distrustful eyes off of you.
Damn him and his 148 IQ.
You muster up the courage as you try to keep your voice from shaking.
"It's time I leave the group."
"You what?!"
You snap your head towards the voice and you suddenly wish for the floor to split open and swallow you whole.
Jungkook is standing on the doorway, flabbergasted at your declaration.
He closes the distance in three long strides, instantly at the side of the bed.
For a moment you forget about everything and almost cry in relief at his improvement. There was still a hint of limping but he was walking just fine.
"Tell me this is a joke."
"I..."
"Y/N."
"I'm not joking."
It's like all of his face loses its pigment, and he just stares at you, speechless.
Then, two droplets of tears slide from his cheeks to his chin.
You'd never seen him cry since debuting.
"After all we got through, you're giving up now? You wanna chase after your dreams? Huh? Is that what you wanna do?"
"Jungkook, please..."
"Why now? Why now out of all times?" His voice cracks and it's the most heartbreaking sound you've ever heard.
You can't do this anymore.
You have to get out, get away before the truth spills from your lips.
On the verge of tears, you rip the blanket off of you and start clawing at the tubes attached to your arms.
"Y/N, what are you doing - " you hear the others say, but you can't stop.
Out.
You had to get out.
Jungkook grips you by your forearm with pleading eyes but you shake him off.
Out.
"Are you okay?"
"Y/N, I'll call the nurses-"
"Just let her go". Namjoon's voice.
In nothing but your hospital gown, you make your way out of the room.
* * *
The continuous chirping of the birds doesn't do anything to calm the raging storm of emotions in you. You felt conflicted, having to choose between playing the bad guy and being truthful.
You hated it with all your might but there was nothing else you could do.
It had come to this.
"Int tajjeb?" the nurse asks you in Maltese.
"Iva. Grazzi."
At least the week spent here had proven to be worthy of something.
You'd managed to learn some basic phrases and you could understand that she had just told you if you were okay now.
The nurse offers you a smile and scuttles away, tending to another patient.
You take a deep breath of the crispy air and let it sink in.
The bench you were sitting on and your lack of undergarment beneath the gown didn't do anything to shield you from the cold breeze.
Oh, how you wished you could let everything go to hell.
You were sick and tired of it.
What were you gonna do from now on?
Where were you gonna go?
Just go back to your parents in shame, with not a single decent excuse to why you had left?
Absolutely not.
You feel a jacket being thrown around your shoulders and you lift your eyes to see Hoseok's head above you, wearing an apologetic smile.
"Thanks." you barely a whisper.
He takes a seat next to you and stares ahead.
"You know, I've only seen Jungkook cry before we debuted." he says in a low, cautious voice. "I was going through a lot and I decided to leave the group. The kid started bawling his eyes out. I don't think he ever cried like that for his parents."
You nod, remembering all too well the exact look on his face when Hoseok had claimed his farewell.
He turns his head now, looking at you dead in the eye.
"Jungkook loves you, Y/N. We all know that."
You almost choke by the straight-forwardness of his words
"And I know you're not really interested in starting a solo career. You think we're dumb?"
"But I-"
He stops you with a palm raised in front of him.
"I don't want to hear it. But just know,
Y/N, that Jungkook doesn't deserve to experience this for the second time."
You gulp harshly and the sting of your next lie makes your throat hurt.
"Well, then tell Jungkook that I also have a life to live."
It was over.
You were never gonna go back to how it was before.
The words had been said and the damage had been made.
All of it intentionally.
If he wasn't gonna fall for your previous lies, then he would definitely buy this.
He doesn't say anything but the shock is quite visible on his face.
He nods once and leaves without looking back.
The jacket slips from your shoulders and along with it, the fake mask of your pretention.
* * *
The heavy suitcase weighs you down and it's all you can do not to scrape it on the floor.
Clad in new, comfortable clothes you make your way towards the room with the number 215 on it.
You can't get rid of the nervousness that has taken hold of you, no matter how hard you try.
With shaking hands, you put the suitcase on the ground and crack the door open, careful not to make a sound.
He's laying on his back, wrapped up in the blankets, eyes closed.
You grimace, trying to hold in the whimper that rises in your throat.
Feet light as a cat, you approach the bed, obviously too small for him as his legs were sticking out of the frame.
If only you knew how much I love you.
If only you knew how I wish we could stay like this forever.
You bend down and press a feather-light kiss on his forehead.
The last time you'll ever look at him like this, drinking him in, savoring the feeling of his image behind your eyelids.
He was gonna hate you with all his might, you knew that.
You knew it and you still did what you had to do.
As long as he is safe.
As long as they are safe.
You take backwards steps and close the door behind you, your heart now a shattered mess.
The girls walked down the hall and into a bedroom inside the hotel suite to discuss what just happened and what they should do. Anitah could smell the cologne in the air as they stepped in and shut the door behind them, it was Liam’s room, she would recognize that scent anywhere.
Each one of them was feeling confused and nervous, unsure. In a matter of an hours time, Liam had asked Anitah to come back to Cordonia with him, telling her he would end his marriage to Madeline, had offered both Pam and Genevieve a job at the new clinic there, and Leo had suggested that if Anitah came, to bring Alicia with her.
“Alright ladies,” Pam began as they all sat down. “This is...quite the turn of events!” She let out a breath. “Cordonia is not new to Anitah and I,” she motioned her hand to Anitah. “But...at least for me...I only ever intended to go there for an internship, not forever. It’s a great job opportunity, but for me, and I assume all of us, this is about alot more than a job.” She eyed each of the ladies.
“Pam!” Genevieve looked at her wide eyed. “This is insane! We just met these guys last night! I’m not packing up and leaving for a foreign country!”
"I know, Gen! Don’t you think I know how ridiculously, crazy this entire thing sounds? But...I...” Pam trailed off hiding the smile threatening to form. “I can’t explain it. It just feels...right. I mean, you hate your job anyhow, right?”
“I know...but I’m next in line for a promotion! Pam...this would mean leaving my parents and everything I know. We don’t even know what kind of jobs are waiting there. It’s too risky.”
"I mean, Anitah...what are the odds that you and Liam would run into each other in a club? I think you should go,” Alicia looked at her.
Anitah slowly brought her gaze to her best friend. “He’s married, Alicia. He’s the King and he already has a Queen. Yes, he said he was going to end the marriage. I’ve heard it before from him...which is how I ended up back here a year ago,” she dropped her head back down.
“Something tells me that this time he means it. I know I don’t know him, but it’s clear he still loves you. And, Pam, you and Drake seem to be made for each other. Maybe I’m delirious but, fuck it. I say we go for it.”
"Anitah...I've seen Liam in Cordonia with his 'Queen'.” Pam rolled her eyes. “She’s a royal bitch, pun intended...and he is absolutely miserable.”
“See!” Alicia exclaimed throwing her arm out at Pam. “You are miserable without him. Don’t tell me that you aren’t.”
“Ok, great! Then Anitah goes and the two of us can go back to Chicago, Pam. Have fun Anitah.” Genevieve slapped her hands on her thighs.
“Not so fast,” Alicia held up her hand. “Something tells me Pam may want to see where things could go with Drake.” Alicia looked up at her new friend smirking.
Pam looked at each of them for a moment. “I don’t know...maybe? I mean, Liam offered me a job, but Drake...he hasn’t said a thing. I don’t know where he stands with all of this.”
"Are you blind, Pam?” Alicia gave her a pointed look. “He’s basically a love sick puppy who is drooling over you.”
“And what about you and Leo?” Anitah chided as she looked at Alicia.
“Well...I could use a vacation,” Alicia shrugged.
"Am I the only one thinking with my brain instead of my heart?” Genevieve creased her brows as she looked at them.
“Um...hello,” Anitah raised her hand to Genevieve.
"Gen, your head is full of shit and your heart was a black hole for men...until you met Rashad. You may be playing it down, but he changed something big in you. Admit it!” Pam stared at her.
“He’s sweet, and so hot, and so...so good in bed...but I don't know...”
“Ok. That settles it, I'll go tell the guys we're in,” Alicia stock up.
“Wait...I didnt say I was in!” Pam looked at her.
“Sit down!” Anitah grabbed Alicia and pulled her back.
“Ok,” Alicia interjected, “show of hands...who thinks their recent bed partner is the best they ever had?” Alicia shot her hand straight up as Genevieve just blushed, not saying a word.
“Duh...” Pam smirked as she raised her hand.
“I didn’t bed Liam...last night...so I can’t say...” Anitah spoke very matter of factly.
“But he was the last guy you diddled,” Alicia chuckled.
“How do you know?” Anitah looked at Alicia acting offended. “I could have...diddled! It’s been a year.....” Anitah looked away not making eye contact.
“Because if you diddled anyone, you would have told my ass,” she cocked her head as Anitah’s shoulders slumped.
“But I’m not moving to another country for amazing, absolutely mind blowing sex...alone,” Pam stated. “But...I mean the job alone...might be worth a trial run?”
“Trial run? I’m listening,” Genevieve looked over to her.
"It might be worth going for say...a set amount of time. One month...what if we give them one month in Cordonia. Try out the job, see where things go?”
"That's a good point. I mean it does sound like a great opportunity. If...and that's a big if, the clinic works out,” Genevieve replied.
“And IF they want to keep us there...they have to earn it,” Pam smiled confidently.
Anitah stood from the bed and walked a few steps before turning to face the other three, hands on hips. “Are you guys missing the part where LIAM IS MARRIED?! This is just another scandal waiting to happen,” Anitah buried her face in her hands.
"Anitah, don’t worry about that. We can take care of this wife Brooklyn style. I know a guy. Forgettabout it,” Alicia waved her off.
Anitah gave Alicia a sideways glance. “She’s the Queen Alicia, she’s protected by guards...we cannot Brooklyn the Queen of Cordonia.” As much as I may want to, Anitah thought to herself.
“Listen, I've known you for like...a minute...but what does your gut say? Not your brain, not your heart,” Genevieve looked up at Anitah.
“My gut says to throw up, Gen...that’s what my gut says.”
“Well don’t do that...because gross. I think your gut is telling you to go and at least try...maybe Pam is right, you guys try it for a month to see how it goes."
“And what about you?”
“I really don't know...I’d have to think about it.”
“We dont have time to think,” Alicia chimed in. “We need to make a decision. I agree with Pam...we give them one month to wow us and then we can work out an extension if we like where it’s going.”
“I can’t make a decision like this! There’s too much pressure and too many variables. Liam never said it was all or nothing! So if you guys want to go, by all means...go. I need a minute,” Genevieve let out a breath.
"I need a drink,” Alicia added.
“Me too, sister. Me too,” Genevieve agreed.
“I need a Valium,” Anitah flopped backwards onto Liam’s bed staring up at the ceiling.
Pam, Alicia and Genevieve all walked out of the room a short time later and down the hall, Anitah staying behind, thinking. All of them were thinking in that moment. Thinking how absolutely crazy this sounded, but also how, at the same time, they all kind of wanted to do it. Pam and Genevieve both had jobs and families that they would be leaving behind, to fly to a country with no guarantee for their futures at all. Alicia would be leaving behind her own family and as the heiress to the family business, that would be handed over to one of her siblings. Anitah would be leaving her degree behind, yet again, and this time so close to finishing. She didn’t have family or any roots there though like the others, just her sanity and her safety net.
Alicia walked ahead of the others and Genevieve turned to Pam whispering. “I have to think about it. I can’t make this kind of a decision on impulse.”
Rashad approached them. “Sorry...I couldn’t help but overhear what you just said...you are considering coming to Cordonia?”
Genevieve shook her head as Pam stepped away giving them a moment. “I don’t know...this is crazy. This is not how you get jobs here in the U.S.”
He nodded his head thoughtfully. “It would be a great opportunity. To make your mark on a new clinic. They’re going to need people with you’re kind of experience.”
She looked up at him. “Don’t get me wrong. It’s an amazing opportunity, but this isn’t just starting a new job. This is starting a new job, a new life, in a foreign country. A country I know nothing about...and I would only know Pam.”
He sat down on the arm of the sofa, placing his hands on her waist. “Hey, you know Anitah, Alicia, Drake...me…” he flashed her a brilliant smile which she returned.
“I didn’t mean it like that. It’s a big decision to make in a short amount of time. I feel overwhelmed.”
He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close. “I would love the chance to get to know you better. You and I have this...connection that I’ve never felt before. One night with you wasn’t enough.”
He leaned in placing a soft kiss on her lips. She felt the same jolt of electricity course through her body, like it did the night before. They parted and she opened her eyes looking into his for a moment before letting out a breath. “One month. I will go for one month to see how it works out.”
Pam walked back into the room and Drake stopped pacing as he looked over, just staring at her. She looked up meeting his hopeful eyes as he stood there with his hands shoved in his pockets. “So? What’s the...ah...the verdict?”
Pam offered him a soft smile. “Can we maybe...talk? Someplace private?” Drake offered a quick nod motioning towards his room. They sat side by side on the bed as Pam gnawed on her lip. "So...um...Liam, he offered me a job back in Cordonia.”
Drake nodded. “Yeah I was there,” he chuckled. ”Are you gonna take him up on it?”
Pam offered a tentative grin. “Well, that depends.”
Drake looked curiously at her. “Depends on…?”
Pam shrugged shyly. “On...on you, at least in part.”
“On me?”
Pam nodded. “I mean, yes. It’s a great job opportunity but...I wouldn’t be considering going if you weren’t a factor.” Drake's eyes widened in surprise. “So do you...want me to?”
Drake stared at Pam dumbfounded, unable to find words. He finally shook himself free from his stupor and began chuckling to himself. “If you only knew,” he mumbled.
“What was that?” Pam questioned.
Drake grinned meeting her eyes. He leaned in pressing his lips to hers, their tongues tangling in a passionate kiss. Drake pulled away breathless, leaning his forehead against Pam’s with a grin. “Come to Cordonia or don’t, Pam,” he shrugged. “But this...us...it’s not over.” Drake smirked, pulling away to meet Pam’s eyes. “I already told Liam this morning. Chicago sounds like a nice place to live.”
Pam smiled thoughtfully at him. “Ok...I’ll give it a go...one month. And we’ll see what happens.”
Alicia stood in the sitting area, Leo coming up beside her. “So have you come up with an answer?”
Alicia looked at him, biting her lip. She couldn’t just blurt out yes, considering the girls were still somewhat undecided. “We need to talk, alone.” Her eyes darted around the room before he smirked pulling her into his room, shutting the door behind him. “So, Anitah is not fully on board with this idea. Liam says he will end his ‘sham of a marriage’, but she says she’s heard it before.”
“I see,” Leo sat down on the bed.
“I don’t even know why we are having this conversation anyway. If Anitah doesn’t go, your offer was if she went, so no point.”
Leo reach out grabbing her hand. “I said that because I thought it might scare you off if I just came out and said what I really wanted.”
“And what's that?” She quirked her brow at him.
“I really want Anitah to come, for Liam’s sake, but...” he pulled her closer, “if she doesn’t come, I still want you to come with me.”
“You do? But, why? I mean...we just met, literally a day ago.”
“Because it may have just been a day, but that’s all I needed. I’m falling for you, I don’t do that. But something about you, I just want to see where this can go. I promise It will be worth it.”
“Ok. We decided on a month trial, so what the hell. I’ll go,” she grinned.
He pulled her onto the bed eliciting a squeal from her, pinning her arms above her head. “Come for a month, stay forever,” his lips crashed down against hers.
Liam walked down the hall after noticing Anitah didn’t come out with the other other girls. He walked into his room and saw her laying on his bed, legs dangling off the edge, arms above her head and her shirt up a little, exposing a small part of her stomach. “Anitah...are you alright? Have you made a decision?”
She turned her head and looked at him. “Oh, just peachy. And no, I haven’t made a decision...”
Liam came and laid on the bed next to her, propping himself up on his arm, looking down at her. “What can I do...what can I say to make you say yes?”
She looked away from him, looking up to the ceiling. “Can you turn back time and make this happen a year ago...ya know, before you went off and got yourself married?”
Liam sighed. “Anitah, if I could, then I would. I can’t tell you how much I regret my decision. I’ve thought about you every single day for the past year. When I have to pretend to be happy, I think about you. I’m always thinking about you. The thought of you is the only happiness in my life.”
She closed her eyes at his words. “Liam...I don’t know if I can go through it. For me to go back there...with no guarantee of anything working out, once again...”
“This thing between Madeline and myself is not a marriage, it never has been. I will be a divorced man whether you come back to Cordonia or not...I can’t force to you to go. But I am certainly not beneath begging, if it means getting the love of my life back.”
“Begging, huh?” Anitah quirked her brow, a small smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth.
Liam chuckled. “I can have you begging for something too...”
Anitah looked at him shaking her head with a small grin. She took a deep breath, not fully believing she was about to say what she was. “Ok, Liam. I’ll go and will give it one month. One month for you to...do whatever it is you need to do. After that month...if nothings changed...I’m coming back to New York, for good. And I won’t ever entertain this idea again. This is a one time offer.”
Liam’s smile grew wide. “That will be more than enough time, my love.” She looked over at him with a curious expression, as if she were silently challenging him to make good on that promise.
He stared at her for a moment before leaning down pressing his lips to hers in a soft, lingering kiss. They parted but only for a moment before he leaned back down capturing her lips again in a more impassioned kiss, his tongue swiping across her bottom lip gaining entrance and finding hers, rolling against one another’s, longing and desperation behind their every movement. His hand slid gently across the exposed part of her stomach, feeling her silky skin for the first time in a year as they became lost in the moment, his touch raising goosebumps across her skin. He slid his hand up underneath the fabric of her shirt, slowly working his way upward and she stopped him just before he made it to her chest.
“Liam...” she spoke breathlessly as she broke free from the heated moment. “This...this can’t happen. Not right now.” He gave her a confused look. “My chastity belts on until you have divorced papers in your hand, signed. I won’t be that girl who sleeps with a married man.” She gave him a pointed look.
Liam looked at her caught off guard. He closed his eyes and let out a soft sigh before opening them and looking back at her. “I can respect that...” he slowly nodded. “In the mean time, this chastity belt of yours...is that, uh...only locked for certain activities...or all?” He quirked his brow in question and Anitah shook her head with a grin as she stood up from the bed shoving his chest as he let out a low chuckle falling back.
“I should get a goddamn medal for that,” Anitah grumbled under her breath shaking her head as she walked out of the room, huffing the whole way. “A whole fucking year with no diddles...”
That night, Liam had Drake and Rashad accompany Pam and Genevieve on the 2 1/2 hour flight to Chicago to pack some stuff up and get things taken care of at their jobs while Alicia and Anitah got their stuff situated at their apartment. The woman spent the next couple of days getting everything figured out.
A couple of nights after they decided to take this jump, two cabs pulled up to the tarmac that held the royal jet at JFK, Anitah and Alicia stepping out of one, Pam and Genevieve stepping out of the other. The cabs both pulled away as the four woman stood there next to one another all staring up at the massive plane before them. They looked at one another, nervous smiles on each of their faces before looking back at the jet, standing there staying silent for a few long moments.
“I have a feeling this is going to be an interesting month...Cordonia here we come.”
Winter Rain
Tumblr media
I'd like to thank @xerxezra for the encouragement. I really needed it, and to the Enya song in which the title and fic is based on. I'm still working on the fic to go with a fanart of mine, but until then feel free to check out my other fics which can be found on my Fanfic Masterpost or Ao3 links which are in my description under my header.
In this fic the reader deals with a change in plans.
_______________
City streets were passing by, underneath stormy skies. No, there were no neon signs but there were cargo trains rolling by on the tracks parallel to the main road. Hmm, wasn't that an Enya song? Perhaps it was.
Funny that you were thinking of new age songs when none were playing on the radio, though you wouldn't have minded if any music was on; it would've made a difference. Enya's songs in themselves reminded you of that one teacher in elementary school who wore that cherry brooch you liked and drowned herself in a bottle of perfume. Your teacher, whatever her name, was halfway pleasant, but always wore a blouse which was a size too big and thus you always saw more of her then you cared to whenever she leaned over a desk to assist another student. Another Enya song, Only Time, reminded you of that one book you tried to read around that time with the questionable cover. Of course, neither of these things had anything to do with the drive home, but it was a passing nostalgia you couldn't pass up.
Wiry, naked trees were scattered along the way; none of them of much consequence except to the fragments of your imagination, where they were dancers in a wintery, mournful ballet. For his part, Rick was unaware of these random thoughts, for you had not mentioned them, but you did wonder about something else when you took a glance at the time and found you two were getting home a little faster than usual. “Rick, do you prefer driving? Or is flying in your spaceship easier?”
“I-I think each one is great in its own way,” he answered, keeping his eyes on the road. “but th-the fastest way to travel is by using my portal gun.”
“So it is. Hmm, makes me wonder what the Flash would have to say about that.” you commented as rain pitter-pattered against the passenger side window. “I bet he'd have a few things to say if you can catch him.”
“Gee, I don't know. I'll ugh - I'll have to ask him the next time I'm in his Earth dimension.”
Sometimes you didn't know if he was being serious or simply joking, though you tended to believe him, especially since it only added to your natural wonder. Your curiosity was a quality which tickled him immensely, but whether he could withstand it while driving was not something you were about to test. Outside, straight ahead, the roads looked all the same, although, to the discerning eye, one would notice the cracks here and there, and the splattered paint on the curb closest to city hall and the fire station. And while the roads were neither empty or full, you would say they were in want of life and perhaps a good shoveling, but with whatever technology hidden in the nooks and crannies of his station wagon, you two drove on the icy roads with ease. It was cold outside, but you weren't cold; Rick made sure of that by giving you the heated seat and a quilt to drape over yourself.
You were, however slightly bored because Zeta-7 hadn't been talking all that much this evening. He had been in a mood and you thought it could've had something to do with the phone call he received while you two were at the craft shop but he didn't say. It hadn't made him any less sweet, but he seemed distant in a familiar way that you were sure you had experienced some time ago. Perhaps he was fearful, he would have reason; contemplative as always; afraid, to an almost unhealthy degree, but risking a chance to placate him, you joked. “Are you trying something new? Is it a seduction tactic, cause I'm certainly intrigued.”
“Wh-what?” he blushed, as he turned the corner to head towards your street.
“Aren't you trying the broodish thing all cool guys do in those cheap romance novels? You know, the kind they sell at the drugstore?” you giggled, turning up the heat in the car to fit your preference.
“Gosh, n-n-no. I ugh - I-I don't think I'm cool enough t-t-to do that.”
“Really? Well, I think if you wanted to you could, though I doubt you'd try it unless convinced it would work. Not sure how effective it would be on me, but this isn't about me. What's going on with you,” you questioned with a serious, but gentle candor. “you haven't said much tonight.”
“I ugh - I have a few things on my mind is all, but it's going t-to be okay. I'm sorry if I alarmed you.”
“Not too much, I just wanted to make sure you were alright. Are you?”
Stopping in front of your home, he admitted with a sudden disheartenment. “I don't know. Sometimes it's - it's hard to know especially if you hear bad news but I th-think I will be. Eventually.”
One of his watches was flashing, and it made you wonder if it meant what you thought it meant. While you couldn't read the line of code which passed over its digital face, you thought you'd seen a similar line of code before. “Are you going to have to go? Is that what's bothering you? I know you promised that we'd paint together tonight, but you won't be able to will you?”
“No, I'm - I'm sorry. I had asked for the whole week off, but this - it's from my supervisor. I can't ignore it. I have to go in. I-I really wish I didn't have to.”
“Oh Rick, if you had to go, why didn't you tell me earlier? I would've understood.”
“You were having such a-a great time picking out supplies that I didn't - I couldn't bring myself to crush your excitement. Now th-that I think about it, I don't know if this was any better, but I-I asked that I'd be able to bring you home first so that I wouldn't have to worry about leaving you there without a-a word.”
Zeta-7 hated to break his promises, and you hated the feeling of a broken promise, but as he switched the car off, and you two walked towards your porch, you admitted. “I would've figured it out and got home somehow. I mean there's enough Uber drivers in this town, and one of them would've driven me home, but I'm glad that at least I had this time with you. Please be careful and visit me whenever. You know you can.”
Instead of comforting him as your easy resignation usually would, he balled his fists and hit them against the railing; hateful of his own inadequacies. You had to admit that when he got upset, it caught you off guard, but it also reminded you that he still was very much a Rick, albeit a softer one. “Th-this wasn't supposed to happen. I-I don't understand why it always comes to this. We were - I had so many things planned out for us and th-”
You hugged him from behind, interrupting what he was going to say. “There will always be next time. Calm down,” you cooed, “it's all going to be okay. It's not the end of the world and I'm not upset by it.”
“But I don't - I don't want t-to keep doing this to you. I promised.”
“I know, but it's not like you do this on purpose. You see, this is what happens when a girl like me dates a guy like you. Expect the unexpected, and maybe a few space worms every once in a while if I eat a sandwich from a gas station on a comet somewhere. These things happen.”
“I wish it - it didn't. Lately,” he confessed, his voice taking on its softer quality. “I've been thinking a-about when I'd like to retire. Maybe I finally should.”
“Whatever you want to do, I'm okay with it. As long as it makes you happy, but only if you do it without regret. You would know best of course.”
“I-I certainly hope so.”
You two stood there in silence for a moment, but you heard a beeping noise emanate from under his sleeve. “I d-don't want to say goodbye, but I'll miss you m-mi corazón.”
When he wasn't around, your home felt emptier,
though you refrained from saying so, and because you didn't want to add to his guilt you simply said. “I'll miss you too.”
“Th-there's a chance I won't see you in a few days. At least it will feel th-that way for me.”
“You can always call me, and if you can't then I'll see you when I see you. You know where I'll be.”
“Yeah,” he sighed. “somewhere I-I'm not.”
“Don't say that. You're always on my mind, and I'd like to think you're always with me, in one way or another. There's no way I couldn't think of you.”
He turned around to face you, his eyes appearing twice as expressive through his glasses. Zeta-7 studied you and brushed his thumb across the back of your hand. “Siempre estás c-conmigo, and because of - of that, I'm never truly l-lonely.”
“Oh Rick, I love you.”
As easily as it was to adore him with your entire being, so it was to break his heart. Whether it had been a lack of love or an abundance of heartache in his life thus far which shook him to his bones, a replenishing of spirit was always in order. You weren't tall, you never had been, but stepping on the tips of your toes, you pressed a kiss on his cheek that never failed to floor him, and marvel as though it were from a fairy queen; one comprised of stardust and moonbeams. “This means you belong to me. Got it cutie? No one else has dibs except for me, so don't look so surprised. You're mine.”
Like a tease, the weather picked up and the strong gust which followed made you shiver, which alarmed him and prevented his reply. You were trying to tough it out because he could be gone at any moment. And must've sensed this, for against your control you shivered once more, but he pulled off his own scarf to wrap around your neck. “It's going t-t-to get colder,” he said protectively. “so please don't forget to wrap yourself up tonight. I um - I placed a-a few thick blankets in your closet just in case. Why d-don't you go inside?”
“Because I can bear it for a little bit longer. Thank you,” you smiled sweetly up at him, despite losing feeling in your cheeks. “but I doubt I'll try to leave my house for the next few days. I'll look after this for you. Hopefully, it's going to be warmer where you're going.”
“I-I can't say, it's…”
“Classified information.” you finished.
“Gosh, I-I-I guess you know th-the drill by now. Smart girl.”
“Maybe. I don't know much, but I know you, and that you can't tell me certain things because you don't want whichever information to be held against me. At least I'm learning. Either way,” you softened, buttoning the top button on his jacket. “please be careful.”
“I-I will. Can I um - can I-I give you a kiss?”
“Do you even have to ask?”
Though of course, he would ask as though your disappointment would disqualify his validity to partake of your affection. He bent down to try to kiss you goodbye, his glasses fogging up at the closeness between you two, but a portal opened right behind him and the guard Rick's on the other side pulled him through. And like that, he was gone again; without a choice; without a goodbye. Your arms which had been around his waist a moment ago, you brought down to rest at your sides, and you too clenched your fists in quick frustration but found yourself halfway exhausted by the cold temperatures and suddenness of it all.
His scarf felt warm and soft about your neck and smelled like him; of vanilla, and of whatever his house smelled like. You thought of the painting that you two would not do tonight, and how you were once again alone. That seemed to magnify it all, intensify the fact that you might've always been alone and destined to remain as such. It used to make you cry when you realized that he could be taken from you at any moment, but you had gotten used to it, or at least you thought you did. Only a few hours ago, you two were at a café, discussing painting techniques and how with a little practice you too could paint that little tree you liked that was growing in the corner of your yard; his enthusiasm was contagious, and you were pumped because you really wanted to show him you had been practicing.
If once again someone cried, then it was you because he couldn't cry where he was going; he wouldn't dare to and repress it for as long as he could help it; if only you were as strong.
Oh, winter rain, how could it relate? It knew little except its natural way; of falling upon the earth; of life; of beginnings; of letting go; of uncertainty. Yet, it wasn't the rains fault; it does not know and could not know; if only. It was cold, and you were cold, with the only part of you that was really warm being where his scarf was.
Thinking of what lied in store for him made you want him back all the more so that you could hold him, and make him feel safe. You wanted him back now because it seemed so unfair that they'd take him when he didn't want to go, but you couldn't bring him back; not even for his sake; being against your power just like the rain. For now, all you could do was only open the front door to your home and step in as the last train passed by; not knowing when the next will come.
