LGBT Zoology Pride!

As June is pride month I thought I’d post some animals that colourations match LGBT pride flags to celebrate evolution’s rainbow in my own nerdy science way.

Ruby-tailed Wasp (Chrysis ignita)

The ruby-tailed wasp is a stingless species of cuckoo wasp found throughout Europe, named after the cuckoo bird because they are also kleptoparasites. They lay their eggs in the nests of other species of wasps, that when hatch use the eggs and larva of the host species for sustenance.

Jewel Beetle (Chrysochroa ocellata) 

Also known as the Metallic Wood-boring Beetle and are native to India. Their rainbow colouration is not created by pigments but by iridescence. Using microscopic textures in the exoskeleton they are able to reflect, in certain directions, specific light frequencies giving them that shiny rainbow appearance.

Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus)

This rainbow coloured mantis shrimp is found throughout the Indo-Pacific and have the fastest recorded punch of any living animal, at over 80 km/h, strong enough to break the glass of aquarium. The mantis shrimp uses this punch in order to kill their prey.

Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae)

Edemic to Australia these passerine birds are sometimes also known as rainbow finches. Males tend to have a bright purple chest while females have a lighter mauve chest.

Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus)

These appropriately named birds are also endemic throughout Australia and are nectarivores. Meaning they feed on the nectar of flowering plant species, such as eucalyptus species, and are important native pollinators species.
