connection between wartime administration & federalist-lean?
There's an argument that wartime service and experiencing Congress' failures firsthand as Washington's aide de camp pushed Hamilton further into the ideals that would later be seen as Federalist: a national instead of state outlook, a permanent military power, and a strong, efficient government.
I was wondering if that argument can be applied on a broader scale: is there an overall connection between revolutionary wartime administration and federalist-leaning political beliefs?
I'm by no means qualified but for my own curiosity's sake, I tried to find the political inclinations of former leaders in the war as well as members of Washington's family, who arguably should have seen the same inefficiencies as Hamilton.
Major Generals:
Washington: Tried very hard to be nonpartisan, but pretty federalist when all's said and done. Especially in 2nd term as president and in last years of life Horatio Gates: Supported Jefferson's presidency, so assuming he was leaning Democratic-Republican? Henry Knox: Federalist Philip Schuyler: Federalist William Alexander, Lord Stirling: Not sure John Sullivan: Federalist, led drive in New Hampshire for Constitution's ratification Thomas Mifflin: Federalist according to Wikipedia (was also aide to GW from June to August 1775) Arthur St. Clair: Federalist. Governor of Northwest Territory, removed by Jefferson in 1802 due to political party differences. Benjamin Lincoln: Federalist, strong policies and presence in Massachusetts Thomas Conway: Unreliable source says Federalist William Moultrie: Some sites say Federalist but he had falling out with Washington because of his pro-French actions towards Genet. Possibly nonpartisan.
Washington's family (Aides, Culper, Life Guard. If they died before we can quantify as "Federalist", then not included):
Note: I tried to include length of service and timeline, arguably important (there during Valley Forge or good period?), but it's difficult in consideration of leave and such. Used Wikipedia's dates.
Edmund Randolph (August - November 75): Wiki says Federalist but I know enough about him that he was often the swinging vote in Washington's cabinet, and that he didn't sign the Constitution because he thought it too strong. Tench Tilghman (August 76 - June 80 | June 80 - Nov 83): Died in 1786. I shouldn't include him but raise a glass for our hardworking Tilghman. Robert Harrison (Nov 75 - May 76 | Military Sec May 76 - 81): Died in 1790. Wikipedia says Federalist. John Fitzgerald (Nov 76 - July 78): Couldn't find John Walker (Feb - March 77): Unreliable source says Federalist Samuel Blachley Webb (June 76 - Jan 77): Couldn't find William Grayson (Assistant Sec. July - August 76 | Aide August 76 - Jan 77): Leader of Anti-Federalist faction with Mason, Monroe, etc. died in 1790 Alexander Contee Hanson Sr. (Assistant Sec. June - Sep 76): Federalist according to Wiki Alexander Hamilton (March 77 - April 81): Is this even a question? Stephen Moylan (March 76 - June 76 | Sept. 76 - Jan 77): "Firm Federalist" according to Founders Online James McHenry (May 78 - August 80): Federalist, GW's Secretary of War in 2nd term when cabinet members were much more partisan. Richard Kidder Meade (March 77 - November 80): Couldn't find. I know that he was very close with Hamilton, which makes me think it possible that their politics had some similarities? But entirely speculation. Hodijah Baylies (May 82 - Dec 83): Federalist. According to Founders Online, Gallatin was advised against Baylies because he was a "decided and we believe a sentimental federalist”. David Cobb (June 81 - Jan 83 | June 83 - Dec 83): Wiki says Federalist Peregrine Fitzhugh (July 81 - Oct 81): Not sure if same Peregrine Fitzhugh, but in a letter to Jefferson in 1807, said: "It is true I have been called a Federalist, and feel a pride in being so: but my Federalism is firmed in those principles which dictated the correct and memorable declaration that we were all Federalists all republicans" William Stephens Smith (July 81 - June 82): Federalist (member of Congress as Federalist in 1812) David Humphreys (June 80 - Dec 83): Federalist. He was part of the Hartford Wits and wrote the poem The Anarchiad. "In 1802, Thomas Jefferson...decided to replace Humphreys...Historians speculate that Humphreys's closeness to the Federalist Party motivated Jefferson’s decisions." from Mt. Vernon Richard Varick (Aide & Priv Sec May 81 - Dec 83): Apparently Federalist and later mayor of New York Benjamin Walker (Jan 82 - Dec 83): Federalist, elected to Congress as Federalist
Caleb Gibbs (May 76 - Dec 80): Couldn't find Nathaniel Sackett: Couldn't find Benjamin Tallmadge (1778 - 1783): Federalist, part of minority in Congress during Jefferson & Madison administrations
Other aides who might've had administrative work, although I'm not sure:
Aaron Burr: Very short run with Washington, and Israel Putnam's aide. Technically Democratic-Republican, but some historians have noted his politics did not always align with a party.
James Monroe: Aide to Stirling, Republican-Democratic
Concerns:
First concern: I'm not sure if the other major generals' aides would see as much administrative work directly with Congress as Washington's aides. I'm under the impression that other generals would report to Washington, than Congress, but I'm not sure.
Second concern: I also want to add that other factors would have most definitely played a role, such as familial and economic interests, which may or may not have been influenced by the war. Still, I thought it would be an interesting exercise.
Third concern: A lot of this is very shallow research as I did not have the time or energy to really dig into all of them. Please let me know if there is any inaccurate information (even Federalist or Democratic Republican is a very broad term and I'm sure their beliefs varied).
Please let me know if you see any inaccurate information, or anyone/some branch I did not consider!

Here's a fairly solid amount of all the different kinds of media that I think both can fit well in and could share the same universe as Sam Raimi's gloriously bonkers and beautifully insane Evil Dead Trilogy, as well as its sequel television series Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which you can both read and see below for yourself:
youtube
• Paramount Pictures' Friday The 13th Series (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9 & Freddy Vs. Jason)
• New Line Cinema's A Nightmare On Elm Street Series (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & Freddy Vs. Jason)
• Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairs
• John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China
• Robert Zemeckis' Death Becomes Her
• John Fawcett's Ginger Snaps
— Brett Sullivan's Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed
• Joel Schumacher's Flatliners (1990)
• Remedy Entertainment's Connected Universe
• Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn
• Julius Avery's Overlord (2018)
• Joe Cornish's Attack The Block (2011)
• Michael Dougherty's Trick r Treat & Krampus
• Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man (2020)
• Bernard Rose's Candyman (1992)

me and jack met because of saw, and we became close because of saw/insidious/repo/firefly trilogy/2001 maniacs/tcm -> saw was created by leigh whannell and james wan -> they also created insidious -> the director of insidious the last key (my favorite insidious movie) is the guy who plays lester buckman in 2001 maniacs -> lin shaye stars in both insidious and 2001 maniacs -> 2001 maniacs sequel stars her, bill moseley, and nivek ogre -> bill and nivek star in repo! the genetic opera which is also directed by darren lynn bousman, the director of several saw films -> bill moseley stars in the firefly trilogy -> rob cast bill moseley in house of 1000 corpses because of his role as chop top sawyer -> without his connection to tcm he never would have gotten his role in corpses which lead to his roles in maniacs and repo -> tcm was inspired by the ORIGINAL 1964 maniacs film -> corpses was inspired by tcm -> ed neal stars in tcm -> ed neal also appeared as nubbins in a revco music video -> nivek ogre was a member of revco for some time -> rob zombie is the reason bill moseley was cast as mayor buckman in 2001 maniacs because he knew tim sullivan -> eli roth is good friends with rob zombie, they made grindhouse together, eli roth produced 2001 maniacs and was visiting the set of the devils rejects during maniacs filming since it was simultaneous to rejects -> kane hodder had a cameo in 2001 maniacs (as a callback to him being jason and robert being freddy) -> kane hodder was also one of the cops in the tear gas shoot out scene in rejects as well as the stunt coordinator -> he ALSO did the mocap for bubba in the new tcm game as well as the stunts in tcm 3 -> lin shaye also got her debut in a nightmare on elm street film -> 2001 maniacs was written specifically for robert englund -> everything is connected

#11-22
Morozov/Chen: Star Wars - kinda glad they went with a more unusual choice. they do that same upside down lift that Zingas/Kolesnik are doing this season - a team at Next Gen are doing it too - idk what it is about the hive mind, but there are about 4 teams doing CPom’s spin position, too. but back to them - yes they’re gelling pretty quickly, but when you’re new the little places you’re not quite used to each other tend to show under pressure, and it felt like that happened in a couple places tonight
Robinson/Portz: Dance Me to the End of Time- they’re good at sustaining a mood and building emotion - some teams project out, they seem like they draw you in - she seems shy or a little guarded, but like being part of a team together still makes the performance personal
Pham/Spiridonov: cello tango (Nicholas Britell and Caitlin Sullivan - Cello Impromptu in f minor, Waltz Tango) another really good vehicle for them. beautiful assisted jumps. this makes me wonder what if he’d gone to IAM with Lorraine
Fournier/Zhu: Rocketman - their skating has progressed, and they’ve gelled further since last we saw them. have to give it to IAM - with as many teams as they have, i’m trying to think of a program that doesn’t look carefully considered and tailored to the team. they look like they love skating this
Dozzi/Papetti: Asaf Avidan - Between These Hands, Reckoning Song. kind of haunting - i felt like there’s a story i wasn’t quite understanding. want to see this again. he has such lovely carriage, and she has a soft quality which i can’t articulate properly but is part of why i like them so much - they do CPom’s spin too.
Hensen/Lickers: Firebird - i can’t tell you how excited i am - this is such an ambitious program. the opening is stunning and then big lift after big lift, ending with her perched on his shoulder as they spin 😮 they were running a little low on energy towards the end tonight, and the twizzles are very late in the program, but omg i can’t wait to watch them grow this - it’s choreographed beautifully to the music, and they picked the best parts
Ichilov/Kravchenko: Zorro - she’s another with a strong ballet/dance background. after Olivia and Adrian’s though, you notice the program isn’t as effective
Ritter/Brykalov: Francis Lai- Mayerling, Nicole Croiselle and Francis Lai - Where Did Our Summers Go. this is beautiful- they have a good connection, and i love how they’ve grown in assurance
Katarina DelCamp-Alalin/Bert Akalin: Dawn of Faith - Eternal Eclipse, Newborn- Elephant Music (OA soundtrack). i’m trying to picture her skating with Ian Somerville, who was her previous partner, when she comes across as a dancer who naturally relates to a partner and Ian really doesn’t
Shilling/Baeten: Celine - It’s All Coming Back to Me - what good timing when Celine’s having a moment- they’ve only been together since 2022, but i would have guessed it’s been longer from the way they fit
Roberts/Alis: CLANN - Her and the Sea, I Monster- Who is She - atmospheric sea shanty - they look like a different team than last season - they can’t have been training in Komoka more than 6 or 7 months, but seems like a good match
Palomeque/White: a new team representing Ecuador - expanding skating to new places is exciting 💕

NPCs YOU’LL PROBABLY SEE MENTIONED ‘ROUND THESE PARTS
Tumblr media
ROBERT “POPS” SULLIVAN. Luke, Bullet, Frankie, and Reggie's grandfather. City councilman in NYC; connections with mob members while he touts that he’s ‘tough on crime’; adopted Frankie and Bullet in their later teens; didn’t approve of his son Kelly’s marriage to Bullet's mother Florence, so he doesn’t approve of Bullet. Just used her for sympathy. Favors Frankie over Bullet ( most of the time ) and doesn't know about Luke and Reggie ( yet ).
Tumblr media
JOHN SULLIVAN. Frankie's father and uncle to Bullet, Reggie, and Luke. Eldest son of Robert. Fuck up, but not as big as Kelly. Currently incarcerated in New York.
Tumblr media
KELLY SULLIVAN. Father of Luke, Bullet, and Reggie. Only knows for certain about Bullet. General criminal, currently incarcerated in New York, but getting released soon. Asshole.
Tumblr media
FLORENCE ( nee DARCY ) SULLIVAN. Mother of Bullet and estranged wife of Kelly. Con artist and thief. Currently incarcerated in New Mexico. Turned Kelly in to get immunity in an unrelated case.
Tumblr media
RIVA DARCY. Maternal aunt of Bullet. Looks out for her when she's in town. Personal hero of the younger redhead. Hates the Sullivans. Tried to adopt Bullet when her sister was thrown in the clink until Robert got in her way.
Tumblr media
MICHAEL “MIKEY” SULLIVAN. Younger brother of Frankie. Perished in an auto accident. Honestly was Frankie’s heart; they loved that kid. It’s difficult for Frankie to speak of Mikey now, but if they do, it’s all glowing.
Tumblr media
DONNY WILSON. Grown ass married man with kids / Ranch hand. Had no business messing around with Bullet at the age she was when they did. Ran out of town when people began to suspect things. Bullet calls him her first love, but that ain't it.
Tumblr media
LILAH BECKWITH. Bullet considers her her first girlfriend, though she was Frankie's at the time. Broke Bullet's heart and really just pissed Frankie off.
Tumblr media
SARA JAKOB. The one who got away for Frankie. They have a tattoo of her name in a heart on their chest and they refuse to get it removed. Very, very sore subject.

"SERIOUS CLASH WHEN CONVICTS ATTACK GUARDS," Ottawa Journal. July 28, 1933. Page 1. --- Trouble Occurs for Several Nights at Kingston Penitentiary. ---- TRIAL OF INMATE REVEALS OUTBREAK ---- Canadian Press by Direct Wire. KINGSTON, Ont., July 28. - That the convicts in the female prison at Kingston Penitentiary had become out of hand and had been attacking the guards, came to light at the trial of Convict Michael McDonald today when Judge E. Madden said that there had been serious trouble during the last few nights.
Frank Regan, defense counsel, asked why Convict Roberts had not been produced as a witness at court today and Judge Madden then spoke of serious trouble, and said Roberts had been connected with it.
Were Beating Guards. Judge Madden intimated the men in the female prison had become out of hand and were beating the guards.
Mr. Regan stated that Roberts had been given 20 lashes for his part in the trouble and objected to such treatment being accorded a man who was to appear as witness.
Deputy Warden Sullivan told the court Roberts had received only five strokes of the lash.
Regrets Punishment. Judge Madden said it was unfortunate the witness should have been punished and issued instructions to Col. Keiller McKay, Crown counsel, that the man was not to receive further punishment until after he had given evidence. He expressed the opinion, however, that "reasonable force" had to be exercised at the prison if the men were getting out of hand and assaulting the guards.
Details of the disturbance had not been told him. Judge Madden said. and stated that explanations were due.
Denies Any Rioting. Absolute denial that Portsmouth Penitentiary convicts are rioting, was made this afternoon by Warden W. B. Megloughlin. A fight Tuesday night in which five or six prisoners man- handled Convict Powell was all the trouble experienced, the warden said, denying statement by Judge E. Mad- den and Col. Keiller McKay.

name: Ajax Sullivan
what: Witch
age: Appears mid 30s
birthday: June 12
occupation: None currently
location: New York
faceclaim: Tim Rozon
status: Selectively multiverse
relationship: Single
parents: Charlotte and Joel Daniels
siblings: Muirenn and Orpheus
kids: Dante and Myra, Brynnlie, and Pete (verse specific to Pete)
The youngest of Charlotte Daniels’s kids, Ajax was always in some sort of trouble. He thought the coven laws were ridiculous and thrived on breaking as many of them as he possibly could. So much so that the day he turned 18, he had his last name legally changed to his father’s maiden name (since Joel had taken Charlotte’s last name due to the legacy of Daniels name).
He knew when Ren had gotten involved with Robert that it wasn’t a smart choice. He had known right away that the man was a demon, but he had been intrigued. Enough so that he kept his mouth shut and followed his sister down the proverbial rabbit hole.
This is how he met Viola initially. They dated off and on for a few years and during their last split, he had met Brynn’s mother (another witch playing around with dark magic). He knew about Brynn, but he never found out about the twins or even Pete, who had been the product of a one night stand with a fae woman he had met in a bar.
By the time Brynnlie had been left on his doorstep at 2 years old, his mother had gotten wind of exactly what was going on and what he and Ren had been up to. The counsel had decided to strip his and Ren’s powers, rendering them practically human. The process had practically shattered his mind and he had been in a care facility for years after that.
After Charlotte was killed, Colette tracked Ajax down and began the slow and tedious process of rebuilding his magic piece by piece following a series of rituals she had come across in one of Cord’s books.
Once his magic was rebuilt, his mind began to piece itself back together, letting him slowly come back into himself. Colette’s done her best to catch him up on everything but there’s still a lot of gaps and he’s not sure how to approach the world currently, but he does want to see his kids.
Abilities Electrokinesis (electricity manipulation) Can use the ley lines with enough focus, strongly prefers not to and has never told anyone he has even the faintest connection to the lines. It makes him feel sick to his stomach and dizzy.

Personality Charming and outgoing on the surface but it's not very genuine. Sure, he can be sweet, but most of the time he's more on the manipulative side. A lot of this was learned from his mother. His association with Robert when he was in his teens did not help with this at all.

My 100 best movies of all time
As a start, this is a top 100 I made back in 2018.
To make things tasty, the first rule I followed was "no more than one movie per director". The second one was "don't get mad trying to order that top 100, just write it down".
Tumblr media
I told myself a lot of lies about the fact that this top could change any day but I'm too lazy to make a new one every day. So here I am, stuck with this one :)

Whanganui Regional Museum back extension
This back extension to Robert Talboys’ 1920s Free Classical style museum building was done in 1968, designed by architects Don Wilson, Eddie Belchambers and Roger Low. While this project had multiple aspects, including adding the Davis Lecture Theatre and a classroom, the main focus of this extension was to house Ātihaunui-a-Pāpārangi, or the Māori Court, which was designed inside as a wharepuni (meeting house).
The exterior of this extension could be said to toe the line between Brutalism and more general modernism, taking elements from both. The heavy looking exposed concrete panels are in line with Brutalism, as is the use of unusual shapes — often used in Brutalism to differentiate parts of the building for an eye-catching dramatic effect — such as the convex outcropping wall on the Watt St side. This outcropping and the sections of wall not covered by the concrete panels are painted a cream colour, which is often used for modernist building facades, with the addition of red brick also adding more colour to prevent the concrete monochrome criticised by many. Brutalist buildings often make use of interesting textural elements as a form of ‘ornamentation’, as we see on this building with the simple textural pattern of the curved facade, which brings to mind harakeke (flax weaving). This also reflects the building’s function as a house for taonga Māori, as does the wheku (carved face) ornamenting the facade.
Through following architect Louis Sullivan’s ‘form follows function’ principle and designing from the inside outwards, the interior of this extension connects smoothly to the rest of the building interior; however, the exterior is less seamless. While the cream colour of parts of the extension match the original 1920s Museum building, the two parts don’t mesh together particularly well, with the Brutalist/modernist look of the extension clashing with the Free Classical style of the old building.

The Hucksters (Jack Conway, 1947) Cast: Clark Gable, Deborah Kerr, Sydney Greenstreet, Adolphe Menjou, Ava Gardner, Keenan Wynn, Edward Arnold, Aubrey Mather, Richard Gaines. Screenplay: Luther Davis, Edward Chodorov, George Wells, based on a novel by Frederic Wakeman. Cinematography: Harold Rosson. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, Urie McCleary. Film editing: Frank Sullivan. Music: Lennie Hayton. The Hucksters was made in the era depicted in Mad Men, when men who had served in World War II were returning to their civilian jobs. In the advertising business, that included men like Don Draper in the TV series and Victor Norman  in the movie, men whose wartime experience had toughened them and given them a fresh angle on the business of selling to the postwar clientele. If Mad Men seems to us to have a more reliable point of view than The Hucksters on that business, it's partly because hindsight is keener than the contemporary view, but also because popular entertainment is less tight-assed now. Frederic Wakeman's novel was a bestseller in part because it was frank about the sex lives of its characters, which movies in the Production Code era couldn't be. So Clark Gable's Victor Norman is turned into a more buttoned-up character than Jon Hamm's Don Draper, but censorship especially worked to a disadvantage for Deborah Kerr, in her first American film. Kerr is forced to be chaste and prim -- characteristics that would type her in the movies until 1953, when Fred Zinnemann finally allowed her to have a sex life in From Here to Eternity. Kerr's character may agree to go away for a weekend with Vic, but only after she's assured that they will have separate rooms at opposite ends of the hotel. And when she discovers that they instead have adjoining rooms with a connecting door, she bolts. The effect on the movie is to sap any chemistry that MGM might have hoped Gable and Kerr would have. In contrast, Gable and Ava Gardner, as one of Vic's old girlfriends, strike fire immediately, which makes the ending of the movie, in which Gable's and Kerr's characters wind up together, feel phony. The Hucksters, coming a year after her breakthrough performance in Robert Siodmak's The Killers, helped make Gardner a star. Kerr had to muddle through in costume parts in movies like Quo Vadis (Mervyn LeRoy, 1951) and The Prisoner of Zenda (Richard Thorpe, 1952) before finally getting a chance to be sexy. There is some zippy dialogue in the movie, and the hits on the advertising business are often funny, but the only real reason to see The Hucksters today is to watch some skillful old character actors like Adolphe Menjou and Sydney Greenstreet do their thing. Greenstreet plays an imperious soap manufacturer sponsor with non-negotiable ideas about what his commercials should be, and likes to intimidate his advertising clients by doing things like hocking a loogie on the conference table to get their attention. If the film had stuck with the ad biz and not strayed off into tiresomely predictable romance, it might have been a classic, or at least a lot better.
