High Stakes (1) | Yanderes x reader
The sound of your commander’s neck snapping was a lot less gory than you expected. Grateful that the only image you will have attached to this experience was their crumpled body on the floor. The culprit stared apathetically at you—who was bowing in acknowledgment.
“You. Will be the new commander of this shuttle.”
“Yes Sir.”
There was nothing more to say as your superior angrily stalked out of the room, their cape and the scent of burned flesh left in the remaining breeze. Along with him, your new co-workers rushed after, purposefully avoiding your gaze as they stepped over your old boss. Hearing the air-tight doors seal shut you finally inhaled, delighting in the much-needed breath of air. Forcing yourself to breathe, although the tension in your body was about to be at an all-time high.
The stakes were monumental.
They are your life.
______________________________________________________________
After your former boss’s demise, you were able to adapt to your role. Successfully carrying out five years of managing a law-abiding, rebel-free, cargo ship. According to the contract you were demanded to serve for a total of six years before you were allowed to retire. Living frugally with room and board provided by the government you were more than prepared for an early retirement. The stressful atmosphere and sleepless nights were far too much for you to do this as long as the last guy.
But of course, in your last months, it just wouldn’t be that simple.
“Commander (L/N)! We’ve captured two stowaways in the cargo bay!”
“Not unusual we give them the usual treatment and send them on a prison transport.”
“These two, are the recently caught rebels. Escapees from…his prison.”
“....I see. I’ll confirm their identities shortly.”
There was a 1 in 60% chance that your ship would be an unlucky vessel for trouble-seeking rebels. And with their recession on behalf of the newest supreme officer hard at work, you thought you’d have the privilege of not being in such an unlucky position. Eager for the last thing you hear not to be that dreadful snapping of bones.
You locked your office before heading to the brig. Passing by multiple armed guards marching on patrol. After having learned of the rebel’s presence you doubled the guards, even if you had yet to confirm it was them. Better safe than sorry.
The door opened with a hiss, your lieutenant officer especially red in the face as she turned from the cells. The cells were made of electric titanium, glittering as clear hexagons. An upgrade the new Supreme officer had made—saying even the most powerful rebels were slaves to its power. You were grateful you had them updated.
“Commander this Rebel Scum, matches the description perfectly,” she huffed handing you the tablet that showed the recently taken mug shots of the prisoners.
The prisoner on the right was a lean fellow but the muscles he displayed were obvious. The tattoo of a prisoner marking his exposed upper shoulder, the sleeveless body shirt fashionably clashing against the tied jumper around his waist. The dull, dirtied gray jumpsuit evidently matched the standard issue for high-value prisoners. He was doing push-ups, seemingly for a while now— he had a darker complexion, sheened with the glow of a measurable amount of sweat. His hair, short and curly, remained unaffected bouncing in tandem with his vertical rhythm. Going up and down and up and down. He spared a look at you, brown eyes housing odd speckled flecks of gold.
This was he.
Matthew Roche—a Human male, age 25, 210 cm, convicted of conspiracy, Assault of Multiple Officers, Treason, Shipment of Illegal Weaponry, and Sabotage.
Notes: Well-behaved in proximity to Prisoner #600 also known as “Ruu”, atypical human strength; give no utensils or any object that can deal damage with blunt force.
“Like what you see? I’ve picked a fine man haven’t I?”
The coy and accented voice that rings out is muffled, coming from the adjacent cell. In there is the other convict. Skin a light pink and purple hair so dark you might’ve mistaken it for black, is a smirking fiend. Leaning against the wall closest to the other cell, he has a much shorter build. Barely a shred of muscle on his body and the tattered remains of a red jumpsuit hanging off his shoulders. You recognized that suit.
“Did you kill and take the suit of one of my mechanics?”
“Ah recognize it do you? I took some creative liberties to maybe match my style a little.”
You didn’t relent, still waiting for him to answer your question. The convict pouted puffing his lips and crossing his arms. Scleras black and pupils red, pretending to squint with fake tears. You didn’t appreciate how long he was taking to answer. The furrowing of your brows, was all your lieutenant needed eagerly grabbing the remote control on the side of the cells. On the little panel connected by a wire to the cells, there was a lock for a key to release and eight buttons meant to depict the levels of electric energy. Your lieutenant eagerly clicked on the third button. Immediately the flash of light goes off, bolts of electricity dancing within the cell. The inmate within writhing in agonizing pain.
“Aaaagh!”
Matthew banged the clear wall, seemingly unbothered by the numbing agent infused into it in favor of silently demanding she stop. You didn’t need to watch the prisoner writhe anymore, unbelievably feeling guilty for their obvious pain.
“Yuki, please.”
She didn’t seem all that willing to listen but one look and she turned the effect off. The prisoner slumped into the wall reeling from the pain they were in. Still, they looked up at you with a smirk, with slow agonized breaths.
“I didn’t kill anyone…they’re just…sleeping it off in your oil garage.”
The lieutenant looks at the communicator on her wrist, quickly alerting the coworkers in that department. Next, she pulled up the hidden camera in the garage of the naked employee among the barrels proving that statement to be true.
“Commander that statement appears to be true. They are still breathing.”
You hum, finally exhaling, and you officially check the tablet. The picture matches the defeated inmate in the cell, still rocking the same wide smile
This was Rumakia Hintoth Yeward colloquially known as “Ruu the Ruthless”-a Diagalos Male, age 134, 145 cm, convicted of Genocide, Murder of Multiple Officers, Treason, Conspiracy, Maiming, Public Indecency, and [REDACTED].
The following notes are also redacted the only words in big letters: NOTIFY SUPREME UPON CONFIRMATION. Sending a look at the recovering Diagolos, there was no doubt this was the rebel they so desperately were after. You’d have to send a call to the Supreme immediately.
“Commander should I–?”
Turning to Yuki and her concerned face, speaking more than any words. You appreciated her offer, certain your previous authority would have taken it in a heartbeat but you were not him. Patting her on the back, you shook your head; purposely ignoring her worried expression and hand reaching out for you.
“Prisoners, you’ll be dealt with in a day’s time. Please get your rest.”
The sentiment was a minor courtesy, almost one you made with pity in your heart. For who they were meeting with next would not be so merciful to stop at the third electric shock. You hoped for your crew’s sake the prisoners would be the only ones receiving that kind of attention.
______________________________________________________________
You could smell the sweat of your crew. Their nervousness was all too palpable to you. You hoped your mask of apathy was of some comfort. Unless any of them spoke out of turn the only one with their head on the chopping block is you.
“Supreme One, it’s an honor to have you here.”
The new Supreme was younger, the wrinkles on his face few and far between. Tastefully on the side of his mouth; similar to smile lines—though that was unlikely. He was donned in the usual black, the typical cape lying only on his right shoulder. Hands in gray gloves that were curled into fists at his sides.
“The pleasure will be all mine when I have my escapees.”
“Of course.”
With another bow, you walked alongside him. Leading him and his personal army of trained guards to the brig. Along the walk you could feel his burning gaze on…you. As unsettling as it was this was your superior in every way, as far as you know he could do anything he wanted. You wouldn’t be able to stop him anyway.
“I’m surprised,” his voice was smooth and sultry; the kind you would have liked a partner of yours to have if you had the time. “To think they employed someone as young as you. I thought I was the only one.”
You didn’t answer. Only nodded.
What were you supposed to say?!
Continuing to walk alongside him, your comfort was placed on the prisoners. At the very least any unwanted attention would be siphoned from you to them the second he had the rebels in his grasp. All you needed now was for that to come to pass.
The wail of the alarm made you want to cry.
Yuki’s voice rang out on the loudspeaker; your stomach further twisting on itself
“T-the ah–the prisoners have escaped! They’re headed for the docking bay, proceed with extreme caution. One is a Diagolos! Act accordingly with the emergency protocols–”
Her struggled warning, made it all too real.
Along with the blaring siren and the red emergency lights, you began to direct your guards. Splitting them off with intentions to funnel the prisoners into airlocks. The plan being if all else failed to jet them into space.
Amid your running mind, you felt a tight grip on your arm. It belonged to the Supreme One, pulling you along as he made his way to the airlock. Leading instead, it amazed you how he’d memorized the outline of a small-time cargo ship under his reign.
“You come with me!”
You followed the best you could, surprised by the detour he was making. Truly curious as to what he had in mind.
“Sir this isn’t the way to the airlock shouldn’t we–”
“They’re going to split up, you might get one to go that way but you won’t get the other.”
With your help, the Supreme One made it through. Your hand and memorized codes made for an easy route for him to eventually come across a bloodied hallway. The emergency light coated the room in a dim red, terribly lighting the surmountable corpses on the ground. At the end of the hallway was Ruu holding a guard intimately, leaning their body against his knee. From afar it looked as though he was placing a passionate kiss on their neck. But alas the light revealed the exact opposite: where his pink lips were on their neck so were the elongated round fangs sucking the man’s blood and some of his organs out. In an instant the man shriveled up, their body deflating before being tossed to the ground alongside the other corpses. Above him stood Rumakia a bloody and wide smile on his face as he danced over his various meals.
“Well hello there dear Supreme it seems you found my jailer! How lucky am I that the two humans of interest are right in front of me!”
The Supreme One’s stoic face stretches into a smile—a twisted, wicked smile, you’re sure is worthy of a man ruling the government. He unsheathes a sword of light and electricity, illuminating the room much better.
By now you felt it was time you excused yourself. As willing as you were to take the fall for your crew, dying in the midst of a battle of the most violent beings on the ship was not your forte. You tried to run, turning to where you originally came but were stopped. Like you weighed nothing the Supreme One had pulled you into his chest with his un-moveable grip, holding his electric sword in the opposite hand he started to laugh.
“Come now, Rumakia! Attack me with my commander,” he’s holding you so tight but you refuse to move the memory of your commander’s crumpled corpse plaguing your mind.
The irony of your similar fate, you fail to realize the specific way you’ve been pulled into the man behind you. Practically no space between you both; his breath, smelling of ashes tickles the side of your face. His nose sensually runs along your cheek as he taunts the fanged prisoner across from him.
“So lovely! I see why you traveled so far for this lifeblood,” the Supreme dares a lick to your sweating neck, “I can’t wait to enjoy them once I kill you!”
The alien across the way shrieks an ear-piercing howl, their hair widening in tandem. A fact about the Diagolos was that their thirst for blood was at its highest or in times of great stress invoked another ability than great strength—-the use of tendrils. So small and weak they mimic hair like any other species but within a specific set of circumstances their tendrils grow and act as additional limbs. That was exactly what was happening now and for Ruu with lusciously long hair meant a web of extra problems for the Supreme One.
Satisfied, the man holding you lets out a whistle, someone of his personal guard appearing behind him in an instant. With his electric sword cutting at the reaching tendrils, your superior twirls you throwing you into the arms of his guard—that doesn’t release you despite your struggling.
“Take the Commander to my ship. Kill anyone that gets in your way.”
The guard only nods before dragging you away, this time you don’t fight as another shrill cry echoes down the hallway. You let the guard lead you, so you can replay the moments before. It was puzzling to try and imagine what exactly was the competition. It couldn’t be you….could it? It’d be bizarre to believe that a prisoner who’s sustenance was blood traveled across the vast galaxy to find you. More than likely you just happened to have a blood type he was interested in…it had to be.
“Move!”
The aggressive pushing from the guard broke you from your thoughts. Passing by the corpses of the same soldiers you’d sent away made you pause. The guard groaned before lifting you up, carelessly tossing you over their shoulder to trudge over their bodies. Your memories with the people they were replay and you feel an overwhelming sense of guilt.
A commander should go down with their ship, right?
You attempted to leave, tearfully reciting the exact thing, hoping to appeal to the person behind the mask. And for a moment they pause seemingly taking your ask into consideration.
“Didn’t want to do this.”
They were swift, unsheathing an electric zapper and jamming it into your side. The force of the jab—painful and the electrocution—burning. You're left to writhe with the resounding pain as the guard moves to pick you up again. Securing your limp body on their shoulder they plan to continue on their way.
“H-hey let them go!”
The pain is paralyzing and you struggle to lift your head much further but you recognize the voice. It’s Yuki. Hardly able to look you note the stance she’s in, the growing crimson puddle beneath her, and the way she leans against the wall. She’s hurt. You want to call out to her, but any attempt to get her attention is thwarted by the guard turning around. Forced to look at the blackness of their uniform you feel them chuckle and pull out a weapon. It doesn’t click the way the zapper did.
It clicks the way guns do.
“With your condition, I doubt you’ll survive this. Not really one to be making demands.”
A shot rings out and she screams.
She’s not dead but you can smell that familiar smell of burning flesh.
“Any regrets?”
“Just that…I can’t promise you it’ll be any better with them, (Y/n)...but I hope it’s better than with him..”
“What?!”
You’re moving again despite the aches in your body. You move to look up, finding your poor lieutenant with a ghastly paleness on her face covered in blood. A shot rings out and her final words ring loudly in your ears.
Who could she mean by they?
She couldn’t possibly mean...?
“What a waste of energy that bi–” your retainer was halted by the baffling sight of a hand sprouting from the front of their chest. Looking down and blankly trying to hold the hand sticking out of him, their mouth fills with blood as the hand retreats. Finally, you’re released, awkwardly catching yourself with aching legs as they descend to the floor. Above them is none other than Matthew.
“You! But why would you—?”
“We have to leave now. Do you need me to carry you?”
The voice that leaves his lips moves something in you, you’ve rarely felt moved before. So consumed with work you never could begin to think of anything romantic with anyone, But hearing his voice and being grabbed by the sturdy hands attached you felt a need like never before. Perhaps it was the electricity, influencing you to lose your inhibitions as you failed to register any of the words coming out of his mouth. Only when his lips stopped moving and he tilted his head did you begin to think maybe you should reply but then you’d have to remember what was said. And that just wasn’t possible.
“What?”
Unlike the guard before he didn’t sigh exasperatedly, just bent down and picked you up. Holding you in that forbidden carry, cradling your back and thighs. Something must be wrong. So very wrong. Despite all your knowledge of the horrors that had been committed by the man holding you, your hands still reached for his face. Squishing what little fat remained of his cheeks and rubbing your thumbs over those delectably plump lips. This felt like there was something terribly wrong. But you also couldn’t stop.
“Have you always been this pretty?”
The stoic face that was oh-so focused on his unannounced mission, looked at you in surprise. Then like the moon coming out on a cloudy day, he smiled. It made this unfamiliar part of you swoon, demanding you lean and nuzzle into the neck of a criminal.
“So sappy, I was worried I wouldn’t make it in time.”
It was Rumakia, even more bloody than you when you had left him, wearing a form-fitting body suit with a cape that dragged on the floor—a trophy from a battle won with your superior no doubt. Skipping over more fallen companions of yours but for some reason, you couldn’t bring yourself to care. Leaning into the alien’s touch he held your face in his hands, making eye contact with his red eyes. For some reason, you felt significantly hotter.
“Who would’ve thought our pheromones would take into effect now? During our little coup…but I’m not complaining. I’ve been waiting far too long for this.”
His kisses were like ice cubes in an intense Earthian Summer, refreshing and addictive. They continued trailing from the corner of your mouth to the veins of your neck, an oddly cool feeling of a sickled tongue going up and down and up—
“W-what’s going on? What’s happening?”
Ruu giggled the clutch on your face trailing to your jaw with a focus on your neck. More kisses and the grazing of something sharp–like the flat side of a blade threatening to turn over any moment. What should have incurred your fear, instead incited your heartbeat to increase in excitement.
“This is what I was after for so long. Letting myself get captured and roughed up when I easily could have massacred them all.”
With not a second wasted Rumakia plunged his fangs into your neck and began to suck at your blood. Feeling your energy drain should have been terrifying, thinking of the guard you saw literally being sucked to death. Instead, you felt a pooling heat below your waist, causing you to uncomfortably shuffle. Ruu was moaning and you felt inclined to join registering how you were being brought to the ground from your elevated state. The light weight of a body being positioned on top of you and those hands fondling every part they could. It felt good but so confusing.
The loss of energy already drained from the stress of the Supreme One’s visit.
The weird heat burning beneath your clothes.
And the inviting touches of the alien above you.
It was too much.
And then it stopped.
The only thing remaining was that unbelievable heat as the fangs left your body and you looked up at Ruu. His lips and chin coated in your blood, looking down at you with a dark pink blush overtaking his face. Behind him was Matthew looking upset…but not in the way you would be if anyone was having their life sucked from them in front of you. No, it was more of a pout. Ruu followed your gaze to look at the man, tilting his head.
“I would have liked you to do this on our ship,” he looked around the room, the floor practically covered in corpses—the corpses of your friends and coworkers, “I doubt when they come to their senses they’ll appreciate having their first with you here...among all of them.”
Enjoying your clearer conscious, you agreed with him. But you still had so many questions.
Ruu scoffed flipping some of his hair off his shoulder, that wide smile returning as he looked at Matthew.
“Hmph so? They don’t get a say anyway, they're my human! Why should I even care what they think about these lessers? If they’ve got the headspace to be thinking about anyone but us than we clearly aren’t satisfying them enough.”
Matthew sighed shaking his head, as he extended his hand to Ruu. Pulling him up and hugging, you once again got to see that rare smile on his face. Sharing a peck between them, Ruu was the one who pulled away easily picking you up and balancing you so that he was cradling you.
“Come on then let’s get to the ship then! I’ve been waiting so long for this.”
Matthew let out a laugh, taking you from the alien resuming his princess carry. Inviting you to rest on his shoulder as he walked alongside Ruu, casually making conversation about the crew your crew they murdered.
“Were you the one to get rid of that annoying lieutenant? They were so annoying! Kissing up and then daring to electrocute me just for joking!”
“I started to but in the end, they proved to be useful.”
“Hmph, I wish I could’ve been there. To see the light fade from her eyes would have been a dream!”
“But you got the Supreme pest, right?”
“I did. That vermin actually touched them, can you believe it? I know he’s half Diagolos and their blood type is nice but the sheer audacity was nauseating.”
“Maybe we can get the rebellion to…thank us.”
“Hm, and that ‘thank you’ can come in the shape of a moon all to ourselves.”
“That’s very unlikely.”
“...Money wouldn’t be too bad, then.”
A wave of exhaustion struck you harder than any you’ve felt. Reluctantly given into sleep fully leaning into Matthew. Eyes closed and your consciousness fading you felt warm lips lovingly brush against your forehead.
“Rest easy, my love.”
“You’re where you belong.”
______________________________________________________________
Matthew shot a hand straight through the enemy’s head, uncaring of the way it lifelessly flopped in front of him. Moving onto the oncoming soldiers coming around the corner he did the same thing he always did: disarming the obstacles and clearing the path for his clients. Checking over his shoulders he listens to them gush about the information they received with one another. He doesn’t sigh, but he does throw the last obstacle at their feet. Startling them and regaining their attention.
“Time to move. We still have to meet the others at the rendezvous point.”
He was glad he mentioned it, their eyes lit up and they moved a lot quicker. Resisting the urge to roll his eyes at the predictability, he centers himself. As a human, his ability to sense others wasn’t incredibly complex but if there was anyone he could find in an instant it was his love. With a tad more urgency Matthew runs through the clean and industrial halls of the Grand Empire's Ship.
Their latest clients weren’t his favorite group to work with, considering it always involved dabbling with the oligarchy regime. But it wasn’t his decision, it was his partner’s. In Matthew’s opinion an incredible privilege for such a bodacious operation. If it wasn’t for the one gift, his love had been given they’d have no allegiance to the ragtag group.
“Nice to see you all in one piece.”
The familiar voice made Matthew swoon, resisting the urge to smile. Settled to stand behind Rumakia as he spoke with the rebels. All smiles and light speech; Matthew let him do the talking since he didn’t bother sugarcoating anything.
“Thank you for your help Rumakia sir!”
“You know I’m only here to repay a debt. After this gig, I’ll take my payment and go.”
“Of course. Let’s take the drives and cruise out of here with the trash as our cover!”
Like any other mission the entire group retreats to their ship, floating away with the trash dumped before the enemy ship jettisons back out to space. As they drifted with the debris collectively watched several cargo ships dock. It’s then that Matthew is finally compelled to watch the 5th cargo ship slot into place.
A sweltering heat made him sweat, his body suit clinging to his skin tighter than before. His heart beating impossibly loud he held his hand over his peck as if to muffle it. Heavy breathing and some unneeded rush of adrenaline drying his mouth.
“Hey, what a find! That’s the cargo ships transporting the hyperdense generators! Highly explosive and probably what’s fueling their latest weapons….”
“We should circle back and blow those up. If we can impede their operations for only a month that’d help us the most.”
Matthew felt a small hand on his lower back, slightly soothing with Ruu’s cold fingers. It grounded him more than he’d admit to--hearing his voice.
“We wouldn’t mind taking the mission to get on that ship. Say one of those generators might save us another job or two.”
Matthew was amazed at how well Ruu could keep his cool. Of the many conversations they had about their bonding, the Diagolan confided in him what it felt like to first be aware of Matthew. Apparently along with the intense heat, there was an overwhelming need to feed—an animalistic drive to get through all obstacles to get to his mate. Seems like the second time he’d gotten better at managing it.
“To put you on the ship would be unnecessary but if you were really eager to get one of the generators that can be arranged. There is a transferring of their mechanics from the prison to the cargo ships though that route…”
The rebel trailed off, their face twisting into a grimace that made Matthew worry. It made Ruu impatient.
“OUT WITH IT! *ahem* What about it?”
The rebel’s eyes widened at the intensity before coughing up an answer, “The prison that switches mechanics is from HIS private prison…our records indicate they do more than just monitor your every move.”
Matthew wasn’t against dealing with torture. He’s done that before. It seemed the issue was the time constraint. On a mission with quick timing, he’s sure he could appease Ruu. Sucking his blood and sex would be sufficient, but enduring a prison sentence, torture, and being separated? That would be a feat.
“We’ll do it.”
“Huh?!”
“You heard me, HUMAN! We’ll do it.”
“But the stakes are so high! There’s no guarantee you’ll survive if HE catches wind that you’re after a generator.”
Matthew couldn’t help but agree this could be even more dangerous if that thing knew what they were actually after. And being detained under that one’s supervision could be fatal when it comes to torture.
The stakes were high.
Ruumakia knew this too, his elongating claws scratching into the leather padding of his seat.
“We’ll do it,” Matthew spoke this time, slipping a hand onto the thigh of his lover.
They had to.
Because you are their life.
Sequel maybe? 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Until Then OST is now on Bandcamp and Youtube!🎶
Bandcamp: bit.ly/UntilThenOST... YouTube: bit.ly/UntilThenOST...
Disclaimer: the caption is is not an official title! Just thought it was something from the game that made me what making this image made me feel : ]
Besides my deteriorating laptop not able to handle the size of this file (crashing 15+ times) I wanted to share the process since semickolon (Mickole Nulud) wanted me to! [UNTIL THEN SPOILERS]🛑
I really wanted to play on the themes of moving on and self-delusion. In Act 1 The Ruling is the constant looming force despite never being talked about by Mark, and yet it drives everything forward nonetheless. And I guess, you know the rest if you played!
I was also inspired by twilight sunsets while riding through Mahabang Parang Angono (sadly, I have no pictures), since a lot of the topography in the game is hilly and mountain-adjacent like Rizal itself (& because the skyline there is sooo beautiful and unmatched, you can see all the way to Metro Manila!)

Ranking All Of Matt's Aesthetics
#1 - Fanon Aesthetic (Red Hair x Black & White Shirt)
I believe this combo was the fandom consensus for years while his only canon appearance was from the greyscale manga. This is the only one on this list that doesn't appear in any canon or canon-adjacent material, yet it's the only colour scheme I actually associate with him. Love it, absolutely iconic, there's a reason why it's stuck around so long. 10/10
(Image found here by Chibionpu on DeviantArt!!)
#2 - Anime Aesthetic (Brown Hair x Black & Red Shirt)
I've seen some people say his hair is green here, but there's another appearance that looks much more obviously green to me, so I'm counting it as brown. I like this aesthetic a lot! It's less distinctive than the red hair x b&w shirt, but the colour palette works well and I like the way this particular shade of brown complements the amber hue of his goggles. 9/10
#3 - Trading Card Aesthetic (Green Hair x Black & Red Shirt)
This one comes from the trading cards, and I think the green hair looks surprisingly good! I respect the creativity and I think this is the most visually interesting look on the list. Where it loses marks for me is in the overall lack of consistency; the bright green hair, orange goggles and red shirt just don't mix particularly well. However I'm very fond of forest green and I'm always a little weak for artificial hair colours in general. Very swag. 7/10
#4 - Coloured Manga Aesthetic (Black Hair x Black & Red Shirt)
This is from the unofficial coloured manga. Honestly I think it's the most coherent aesthetic of them all (the black boots + black hair + black stripes) and I much prefer the bold red to the dusky hue of the anime & trading card shirts. I just find it a little underwhelming on the whole. It's a safe option lacking any real personality or flair. 5/10
#5 - DS Game Aesthetic (Blue Hair x Blue & White Shirt)
This is from the Successor to L DS game. It gets points for uniqueness, but that’s really all this look has going for it. It's incredibly difficult to go wrong with blue, but they somehow managed to pick what I would subjectively call the only two bad shades of it in existence. He looks like a young man cosplaying a middle-aged mad scientist. 2/10
#6 - Anime Guidebook Aesthetic (Brown Hair x No Goggles)
Who the fuck is that. -1000/10

If the Silicon Valley of the 2000s and 2010s prided itself on an anti-fashion ethos—the hoodie, the New Balance trainer, the uniform of studied indifference to material possessions—then today’s tech billionaires have flipped the script.
These days, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a jiujitsu-practicing, Richard Mille–wearing, powerlifting tycoon whose aesthetic suggests something between a Bond villain and a UFC champion. Elon Musk, the self-styled messiah of Mars and free-speech absolutism, oscillates between Belstaff leather flight jackets that scream “aging rock star managing his seventh divorce” and all-black Tom Ford suits that suggest “billionaire villain in a sci-fi movie who insists he’s the hero.”
Then there’s Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, once a dorky, fleece-vested book salesman, who has since undergone a biceps-first metamorphosis into a Vin Diesel–adjacent yacht lord. These days, he’s a fixture at Milan Fashion Week, turning up at Dolce & Gabbana shows in impeccably tailored trousers and a D&G leather bomber jacket. The New York Times has gone as far as to label him a style icon. It’s a stark contrast to 1999 when he revealed to WIRED his love for shirts with “hidden snaps” under the collar points for easy tie removal.
The new tech oligarchy, forged in the crucible of Trump-era chaos, has moved beyond the faux humility of Patagonia vests and Allbirds. They are dressing like titans, strongmen, and emperors because, in their minds, that’s exactly what they are. Their outfits do not merely say I have wealth. They declare “I have power, and I intend to wield it.”
Parable of Power
In many ways, this aesthetic evolution tells a larger story about the consolidation of power in the tech industry. There was a time when tech billionaires maintained a carefully curated image of modesty—Elon Musk, for instance, once claimed to live in a tiny house on his sprawling estate. When asked why he wore the same thing every day, Zuckerberg responded: “I’m in this really lucky position where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than a billion people. I feel like I’m not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life.”
But now, that mindset has shifted. “They’re openly embracing their status as modern-day oligarchs, fully leaning into wealth, power, and influence. And they’re celebrating it with some seriously big watch purchases,” says WIRED’s watch expert, Tim Barber. Nowhere is this shift more apparent than in figures like Zuckerberg, who, while systematically dismantling fact-checking protections across Meta platforms, is doing so with an exceptionally rare $895,000 Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 timepiece strapped to his wrist.
Luxury watches have long been markers of power, but Silicon Valley initially distanced itself from that tradition. Jobs wore a humble Seiko. Bill Gates has never been one for flash. Zuckerberg, for years, followed suit—until he didn’t. The shift was caught on video. At a pre-wedding party for Anant Ambani, heir to one of India’s wealthiest families, Zuckerberg was seen marveling at a sapphire-crystal Richard Mille watch—a brand synonymous with extreme wealth, with entry prices from $365,000.
“I never really wanted to get a watch,” Zuckerberg is heard saying. “But after seeing that … watches are so cool!” Within weeks, Zuckerberg had embraced horology with zeal. Notable additions include a $783,000 rose-gold Patek Philippe Ref. 5303R-001, a $90,000 De Bethune DB25 Starry Varius featuring a blue dial with a depiction of the Milky Way, and a €40,910 FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain Havana. Musk's watch collection is also high-end but more pedestrian, more predictable (Rolex, Omega, TAG).
“This evolution in tech culture mirrors the robber barons of the past. Today’s billionaires, like those of 100 or 150 years ago, appear largely indifferent to public perception,” continues Barber. He notes that collecting watches, in itself, isn’t an indicator of morality. It’s simply that high-end watches have become part of the new uniform. “The equivalent of the understated Apple Watch once worn by the ‘thoughtful, responsible’ tech leader. Now, intricate, ultra-expensive timepieces have become the accessory of the ‘I don’t care’ billionaire.”
The tech billionaires have long been aligning themselves with mythmaking, macho masculinity narratives. In 2018, Musk began working with designer Emily Dawn Long on his new look, supposedly looking to channel macho male icons such as Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, and Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. As a result, Musk reportedly dropped six figures on a vintage Paul Newman Rolex Daytona, a watch synonymous with masculine cool. He also added a Tesla-branded black cowboy hat to his rotation, a symbol of frontier bravado and lone-wolf individualism, evoking the mythos of the self-made pioneer—whether wrangling AI, space travel, or the X algorithm.
It’s not just watches. Zuckerberg’s wardrobe now includes custom T-shirts emblazoned with historical mottos: “Pathei Mathos” (Greek for “learning through suffering”), “Carthago delenda est” (Latin for “Carthage must be destroyed”), and “Aut Zuck aut nihil” (Latin for “Zuck or nothing”). These phrases, steeped in imperialistic and warrior-like rhetoric, suggest a new, more aggressive self-styling that asserts power.
It’s a far cry from his 2018 Senate hearings, where he appeared in an ill-fitting suit that made him look more like a teenager at his first job interview than a formidable tech CEO. “Part of his rebrand seems to be about rehabilitating his standing within Meta and corporate America, through alignment with dominant trends that prioritize charisma over contemplation, machismo over moderation,” says Benjamin Wild, cultural historian and fashion communication lead at the UK’s Manchester Fashion Institute.
However, one of the most striking things about Zuckerberg’s style transformation is how public, deliberate, and immediate it has been, he says. The first sign arrived back in April 2024, when an AI image of a bearded Mark Zuckerberg went viral on social media. After that fake image, Zuckerberg began to embrace a more fashion-forward and assertive style, even prompting Meta's own AI to suggest a new look for himself. He was seen wearing gold chains and designer clothing and sporting a more muscular physique, reflecting his interest in mixed martial arts (MMA) training.
“We cannot lose sight of the fact that this tech billionaire used the AI feature on his own platform to reimagine his look, then committed to it once the image went viral. That speaks to how external validation still fuels self-presentation, regardless of status,” says Jesica Wagstaff, the fashion commentator and author of A Sunday Journal Substack, who adds that it also signals just how much conservative aesthetics have seeped into the American cultural bloodstream.
“Granted, Zuckerberg initially asked for an AI rendering of himself as a ‘streetwear designer in LA.’ But he didn’t just adopt the look; he distorted it with personal signifiers—status symbols, combat-ready aesthetics, and a sliver of dystopian machismo. The effect is an uber-wealthy MMA fighter," continues Wagstaff. “And that’s very much the point. Zuckerberg is no longer just the nerd who created Facebook. He’s a jiujitsu-practicing, watch-collecting, gaming dad who loves his wife and kids—and still finds time to strip online protections from vulnerable users of his platform. We’re meant to see him glow up and ask ourselves, ‘What can’t Mark Zuckerberg do?’”
The answer to that question, of course, depends on who is asking. To his elite peers, Zuckerberg’s latest image signals strength, power, and cultural awareness. To the rest of the world, it may be another reminder that those who claim to lead us are increasingly operating in a world entirely their own.
When Did This New Dress Code Drop?
Personal style has long been a tool in the arsenal of the tech elite. Steve Jobs famously rejected traditional status symbols in favor of a self-imposed uniform: The infamous black Issey Miyake turtleneck, Levi’s jeans, and New Balance trainers. Many of Silicon Valley’s most prominent figures followed suit, embracing a lux-tinted version of understated, utilitarian dressing—embodied in 2017 by $500 Lanvin low-top sneakers favored by the likes of Satya Nadella and Larry Page. Of course, this stripped-down approach to fashion wasn’t an abdication of style; it was a strategic choice.
In an industry that prides itself on disruption, dressing down became its own kind of dominance, while also reflecting the tech ideology of the time: Innovation over tradition, efficiency over excess, and—at least in its early days—a belief that technology existed to serve people, not just profit from them.
Indeed, in the early 2000s and 2010s, tech’s biggest names presented themselves as visionaries on a mission to democratize access, improve lives, and build a better future. The industry positioned itself as an antidote to Wall Street’s greed, and the seemingly casual uniform of T-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers reinforced that distinction. Tech leaders weren’t flashy bankers in tailored suits; they were problem solvers, engineers, and idealists, working toward a utopian vision of progress.
“Zuckerberg’s style shift says something about a specific group of American billionaires who are aligning themselves with what looks to be a new political order within the United States,” Wild says. “These moguls control multinationals, which include Meta, Google, Amazon and Uber, that have an extraordinary capacity to influence people’s decisionmaking, and who are consequently prime figures for politicians to moderate.” While the Biden administration did this via the judicial arm of government and legal courts, it appears President Trump seems inclined to handle these men through his personal court, where they are required to seek his approval.
“We saw this at Trump’s presidential inauguration,” says Wild, “where the invitees constituted a who’s who of American tech billionaires. For me, there are strong parallels with medieval royal courts, where members of the aristocracy competed among themselves, often in what they wore and how they consumed, for the attention and patronage of the ruler. Within America today, these men seem less concerned about their perception among the public, and far more concerned about how they appear to one another, and Trump.”
For now, some tech bros—Sam Altman included—are still clinging to their tees and action slacks, but how long before their look evolves to match the growing power they wield? OpenAI, after all, seems to be getting darker by the day. And then there’s Sundar Pichai, the quiet architect of Google’s AI empire, whose fashion may not be making headlines (yet) but whose policies certainly are. Under his watch, Alphabet just scrapped its long-standing promise not to develop AI for weapons or surveillance.
So what’s next? A titanium Richard Mille built for billionaires with defense contracts? A bespoke Brunello Cucinelli cashmere sweater emblazoned with “In AI We Trust”? Pichai has already ditched the New Balance memo for those Lanvin sneakers, with hype footwear a previous gateway drug for billionaires. (Zuck famously has a penchant for Adidas 4DFWD x Strung trainers.) If the new tech dress code is all about signaling dominance, surely it won’t be long before Pichai and Altman follow suit. Because in Silicon Valley, power isn’t just wielded—now it’s worn.
The Impunity of Reinvention
The curious thing? Few are questioning Mark Zuckerberg’s transformation. Most commentary fixates on the what and how—his sculpted physique, designer accessories, and combat-ready aesthetic—rather than the why. “This emphasizes the persistence of gender inequalities. When Kamala Harris was running for office, her aesthetic choices were scrutinised relentlessly. Yet Zuckerberg’s evolution is met with curiosity rather than critique. It highlights the impunity with which powerful men can reinvent themselves,” says Wild.
For Zuckerberg, the shift from awkward tech nerd to combat-trained, physically imposing leader mirrors the broader trajectory of Silicon Valley itself. The archetype of the hoodie-clad disruptor has been replaced by something more militarized, more overtly aggressive. The new tech oligarchy isn’t just about controlling perception; it’s about controlling entire industries—perhaps even countries. And increasingly, it operates beyond the reach of traditional accountability.
Zuckerberg’s aesthetic evolution coincides with Meta’s rollbacks on content moderation, a move that aligns him with the political right. His embrace of high-status signifiers (luxury mechanical watches, gold chains, a hardened MMA physique) signals alignment with a particular brand of alpha masculinity that is scarily rife among the elite. Moreover, his media appointed “tech bro glow-up” reflects a deeper truth about power: The extraordinary privilege of wealthy men to rewrite their own narratives, shedding past identities at will. Reinvention, in this context, isn’t just self-expression, it’s an assertion of dominance.
Just watch the reaction as a beaming Musk appears as a surprise guest, streamed in on huge video screens to the far-right Alternative for Germany national election campaign launch in January. “You have to make a decision," said the AfD's Maximilian Krah. "Do you want to have the party of [Chancellor] Olaf Scholz and all those eunuchs? Or are you on our side, with Elon Musk and Donald Trump? Which side has more sex appeal?”
If history teaches us anything, it’s this: When the richest men in the world start dressing like emperors, the rest of us should pay attention. Because power, when it rebrands itself, is rarely just about aesthetics. It’s a warning.

Is CYN Autistic and is She Good Representation?
Murder Drones ⟨00⟩ is an indie show about robots; created by Glitch Productions ⟨01⟩; directed by Liam Vickers ⟨02⟩: all episodes are free to watch on YouTube and I do recommend watching. The show follows a robot girl named Uzi and her best friend N; CYN (the subject of this post) is N’s adoptive younger sister. Many people in the Murder Drones fandom (including myself) have identified her as being autistic but is this the case and is she a good representation?
In this post I will try to go over all the evidence we have which suggests she is/isn’t autistic and discuss what it means to be a good representation. I have split this post into three parts,
Is CYN Autistic (Minor Spoiler warning)
Is CYN Autistic (Major Spoiler warning)
What is Good Representation and does CYN qualify?
If you enjoy reading this, consider reblogging and checking out my other post where I go into the science behind "if N is colour blind?⟨3⟩”. I must forewarn, I am not a medical doctor nor am I qualified in any adjacent fields relating to disabilities, I am just an autistic person who enjoys film theory.
All references used are linked too and also supplied at the bottom.
[image transcript; a picture of the character CYN from Murder Drones Episode 5 sitting behind a bar counter holding a ceramic teacup]
The first point I want to make is to address the possible concerns over CYN being a Worker Drone (the name given to one type of robot in Murder Drones) as, in media, autistic people are often negatively represented through machines. This is not the case here, in the show most characters are robots and behave neurotypically; the behaviours and mannerisms of CYN will expressly be discussed in comparison to the rest of the cast. This will also be discussed more in greater detail later in the post.
Part 1 - Evidence : Minor Spoiler Warning
Posture
The manner in which CYN stands gives us multiple strong indications that she is neurotypical. Contrary to common belief, autism both affects a person mentally and physically with a strong overlap between the two⟨04⟩.
[image transcript; a picture of the character CYN from Murder Drones Episode 5 standing looking upwards towards the camera smiling with a crooked posture]
Going from top to bottom, the notable traits are;
CYN is very short, being estimated to be ~100cm or ~3'4''. For comparison, most Worker Drones are around 132cm or 4'4''. This is likely due to her being a child but there have been studies which have found that Autistic people are generally taller than their neurotypical counterparts⟨05⟩.
CYN holds her head at a tilt which is an common autism stim⟨06⟩. We also see that she often uses her hand to adjust her head or to hold it in support, leading to the conclusion that she has hypotonia (weak “muscles”) which is characterised by symptoms like difficulty holding the head up, difficulties with sitting up⟨07⟩, and poor posture; all identified in CYN. The source just provided focuses mainly on infants but I did manage to find a case study of a ten year old written by Mark Hutten⟨08⟩. I also found an interesting study saying head tilting can assist in helping an autistic person with facial recognition⟨09⟩.
CYNs elbows are constantly bent over a 90 degree angle pulling her arms towards her chest. This is known as “T-Rex Arms” in the autistic community and is usually believed to be a form of stimming⟨10⟩.
When not being used, CYNs hands are constantly limp. This is a commonly seen extension to the “T-Rex Arms”. I was unable to find a scholarly article but I did find a discussion point by the online influencer Autistic Emmalyn⟨11⟩.
CYN leans towards her left leg and her right leg is distinctly more bent, this is common in autistic people caused by what's known as “Leg length discrepancy”⟨12⟩. Note, I've found contradictory evidence for what causes “Leg length discrepancy”; does the posture decrease leg length, does the leg length induce posture, or is differing leg length an illusion. It is also unusual for both legs to be bent so it's hard to say with certainty this is the cause.
CYN points her feet inwards which is known as in-toeing which is a common symptom of autism although only generally present in young children⟨13⟩. In-toeing can be caused by “femoral anteversion”: I found no study directly correlating “Femoral Anteversion” and autism but I did find a study which correlated hypermobility with autism⟨14⟩ and a study which correlated “Femoral Anteversion'' with hypermobility⟨15⟩. Hypermobility has also been shown to be correlated with hypotonia⟨16⟩.
CYN is seen pulling her thighs inwards which is a sign of autism and many autistic people (specifically autistic children) do it to help them find balance⟨13⟩.
Note that there is one scene in which she doesn’t stand in the manner described above, in this scene she is not the focus and she’s very much obscured. I believe at this point this is likely an animation error. I will be discussing this in greater detail later on but cannot currently due to the problem of spoilers.
[image transcript; a picture of the character CYN from Murder Drones Episode 5. The shot is of her standing neurotypically from behind while holding a ceramic teacup]
Walking
The problem with discussing the manner in which CYN walks is that we get limited shots of her walking, particularly unsupported. The best evidence we do have comes from the gala preparations in episode 5 but in that scene the lower parts of her legs are obscured and she is taking aid from N. There are other scenes where we somewhat see her walk but they each come with their own problems.
[image transcript; a picture of CYN (left) walking holding onto her older brother N (right)]
By comparing the number of times CYN and N’s head bob while walking together we get an indication of their respective stride lengths, by watching the scene at 0.25 speed CYN takes ~16 steps and N takes ~9 steps. Since they’re walking in tandem, we can conclude that CYNs stride length is 9/16=~0.5625 times that of N’s. Since stride length and height are directly proportional17, we can take into account their height difference by multiplying by the ratio of their heights (132cm/100cm=1.32) which gives us 1.32*0.5625=0.7425 so even when height is taken into account, CYNs stride length is significantly smaller than N’s and a smaller stride length is a symptom of autism⟨17⟩. This is also backed up in other scenes where we see CYN move and her stride appears very short.
While walking with N, her gait (distance between feet) is neurotypical, in other scenes where we see her walk, without aid, this is not the case so this is a direct example of where we cannot be certain of the information we’re getting from the gala preparation scene. A wider gait length is a sign of autism⟨18⟩.
When looking at the movement of her kneecaps compared to N and the other servants, she has a distinct increased hip flexion which is a symptom of autism which is an action taken to mitigate the effects of autism on mobility⟨18⟩.
Although she has an increased hip flexion, her knee’s do not appear to bend significantly which is another sign of autism along with limited ankle movement⟨18⟩. We only see one shot in the show where we see CYN feet while she’s moving and in that she takes only one small step backwards but it does seem that her ankles don’t bend, I am reluctant to push this as evidence due to how limited the data is.
In the cathedral scene, we see that she seemingly pauses between steps as she walks (this behaviour is not present when walking with N). This is referred to as an increase in the stance phrase which is a sign of autism⟨18⟩.
Oral
CYN (voiced by Allanah Fitzgerald⟨19⟩) has a very distinct manner in which she talks, for those unaware her voice sounds very reminiscent of Siri/Alexa which strongly contrasts most other characters in the show who have fully articulated voices. Without going into details (to avoid spoilers), there is an argument that can be made that her voice is the default for Worker Drones.
[image transcript; a picture of the character CYN from Murder Drones Episode 5 kneeling on a bar counter holding up her head with the back of her hand]
Here is a transcript of a conversation between CYN and N.
N - *walking in*
CYN - “You seem, upset—big brother—N. Perhaps you'd like to attend the gala with me?—light sip”
N - “Ahh, not sure we’re invited, little buddy. Why not just hang with me?”
CYN - “climbing, criss cross applesauce—am I—not wanted, N?”
N - “aww dude, you know its her parents… ahh, don’t give me those eyes”
CYN - “giggle, I am so naughty.”
certain parts of N’s lines being altered to avoid spoilers (CYNs lines have been left virtually unchanged).
The most obvious part of her language is her rigid voice, it is very monotone. This is not hard to correlate to Autism as ‘robotic’ is a common descriptor used to describe one of the ways people who are autistic talk⟨20⟩. I do want to mention that although her voice is robotic, she isn’t emotionless, through her actions it is clear she can feel a wide range of complex emotions including humour and annoyance; it's just she struggles showing it⟨23⟩.
CYN also uses phrases when performing certain actions such as “criss cross applesauce” when she is sitting down; this is a sign of Echolalia⟨20⟩ which is very common for autistic people⟨20⟩. Her phrase “you’d like to attend the gala with me” also gives the implications of delayed Echolalia⟨21⟩. Note, certain things she vocalises like “giggle” and “annoyed expression” aren’t Echolalia.
CYN does not show any sins of having narrow interests which is usually a common symptom of Autism⟨20⟩. This may be a result of her limited screen presence as we don’t get significant indications of any of her interests.
Since we don’t see CYN through multiple stages of her life, it is difficult to determine if her language skills have developed unevenly⟨20⟩. She does mix childish and formal language together as she talks which can be interpreted as implying uneven language skills. I think the explanation of Echolalia fits better.
[image transcript; a close up picture of the character CYN from Murder Drones Episode 5 kneeling on a bar counter holding out her hands making an excited expression with her tongue out] (author note, do not question why she has a tongue)
Her face, although much less emotive, isn’t devoid of emotion; she can somewhat show emotions like fear and can be very expressive but only in a rigid and forced manner although her face is usually unexpressive. She also sometimes she visually shows the wrong emotions like with the picture above she is excited but here eyes are showing the scared emotion. All these is very stereotypical of autistic people and defies the common stereotype⟨22⟩.
Now we have come to the end of part 1, which is sad ): . Please consider reblogging, this took a lot of time and research to put together and I'm sure there's still mistakes and inaccuracies. So what conclusions can we draw from this information… not much since a lot of important information has been left out since they cannot be discussed without major spoilers for the show. Thank you for reading.

If the Beatles were beetles, what beetles would the Beatles be?
John: Cobblestone Tiger Beetle (Cicindela marginipennis)

Beetle photo from weecorbie on iNaturalist
The black and cream colouring of the cobblestone tiger beetle corresponds to John’s more traditional earlier image, as well as giving it a sophisticated air. The slight iridescence of the beetle embodies John’s creativity, later embracing of new ideas, and can appear as a rainbow, a symbol commonly associated with hippies and their ideals (or perhaps symbolize John’s potential bisexuality?). The behaviour of tiger beetles also makes sense for John. Tiger beetles are very fast and are known to have very quick reaction times, akin to John’s quick wit and unpredictability. Tiger beetles are known to have a distinctive hunting style, involving repeatedly sprinting at their prey, then stopping. This parallels John’s sometimes aggressive, sometimes relaxed personality.
Paul: Cream-spotted Ladybird (Calvia quatuordecimguttata)

Beetle photo from alexis_orion on iNaturalist
When I asked my friends what beetle Paul would be, they all said “a ladybug”, because apparently Paul is a woman to them. I didn’t choose a ladybug because of that, though, I chose it because they are cute, and Paul is ‘the cute Beatle’. I chose this species specifically for its markings. I didn’t want a standard red, black, and white ladybug for two reasons; 1: The white spots on the thorax give the impression of eyes with a very severe and sharp shape, and 2: The bright red does not give Paul vibes. With the Cream-spotted ladybug, its eyes are clearly visible, round, and dark. The colours of these beetles range from orange to dark brown in Europe, which are much more Paul-adjacent— still fairly bright and showy with the white spots and the swirls on the thorax, but toned-down enough to not seem too flamboyant or excessive. Despite the fact they are strictly carnivorous (the opposite of Paul), ladybugs are associated with gentleness and are appreciated by gardeners as a beneficial insect. This corresponds pretty well with Paul’s polite, people-pleaser image.
George: Ellipticus testaceus

Beetle photo from perksimages on iNaturalist
I chose this particular beetle for George mostly for its shape. I liked how the thin, fairly long legs were emphasized by the black, maybe corresponding to George’s lankiness. The abdomen being shaped like an oval coming to a point could either simply reflect George’s sharp features in general, or his generally agreeable, yet sometimes harsh personality. The orangeish colour of this beetle is also fitting for George due to the colour’s importance in hinduism. These beetles have little impact on humans, which I think can represent George’s image as “the quiet Beatle” and him being overlooked early on.
Ringo: Peridinetus cretaceus

Beetle photo from kyukich on iNaturalist
It was immediately obvious that Ringo would be a weevil, but with such a broad group, it was hard to choose. Apart from the ‘snout’ weevils are known for, I also picked weevils because of their eyes. A weevil’s big, shiny-looking eyes fit with Ringo’s often wide, sad-looking ones. The rounded and exaggerated shapes of this weevil lend themselves to the sort of comical yet gentle image Ringo has, while the black and white colour pallete gives it a slightly more refined air, maybe even paralleling a suit.

Scrab

Image © Oddworld Inhabitants, accessed at the Oddworld Wiki here
[Sponsored by @martyslittleusedblog. Like previous Oddworld creature the paramite, the scrab combines a very distinctive look with pretty basic mechanics. After all, in a game where your character dies to a single bullet, combat isn't exactly the developer's goal. So the good stuff is in the flavor text, which I did tweak just a little. In the games, it's implied that scrabs are pure carnivores, but both their desert habitat and ability to be farmed for food suggests something a little broader. So I went omnivore.]
Scrab CR 7 N Magical Beast This creature has four crab-like legs, each tipped with a large claw, above which grows an armless, humanoid torso. Its head is eyeless, with a large upward scooping beak, sword edged along the lower jaw.
Scrabs are belligerent omnivores native to the desert mesas and canyons of an alien world. They are extremely territorial, repelling all other scrabs from their territory except for pack members unless it is the mating season. Territorial marking is done with booming calls that carry for miles through the still desert air, but if that fails, scrabs do not hesitate to fight others of their own species to the death. Due to the harsh nature of their habitats, scrab territories are large. Most scrabs forage independently by day, and then return to a communal nest during the night to feed the young, who are communally raised on regurgitated food provided by all pack members.
The bulk of a scrab’s diet consists of roots and gourds, dug up using their shovel-like bills. They prefer meat when they can get it, though, either carrion or killed on the hoof. Scrabs find the meat of their own kind unpalatable—the one thing a scrab will refuse to eat is another scrab. This is unusual, as many species find scrabs to be delicious, albeit difficult game. Due to their homebody nature and garbage disposal physiologies, scrabs can even be farmed, although this runs the risk of the farmer becoming the next meal if the scrabs are neglected or underfed. Due to their durability and fierce nature, scrabs are also sacred animals in some cultures. The cultures that farm scrabs and those that venerate them are usually deeply at odds with each other.

my regretevator gender/sexuality headcanons because it's pride month and you know what that means
poob: does not conform to labels when it comes to either their gender or sexuality. they're just poobing it.
pest: also not huge on sexuality labels beyond just "aspec". he's canonically intersex, but i think he takes testosterone so that his appearance leans more masculine. not EXACTLY "male" but it's close enough and he's too busy to elaborate further
split: transgender lesbian #1
bive: also a trans woman, but she's too busy doing RESEARCH to figure out her exact sexuality. also labels are only encouraged by society so that the clowns will have an easy way of sorting us when they take over the government.
mannequin_mark: mannequins don't really have a concept of gender, so he's still trying to figure out where he stands with that. he leans more towards masculine, but not strictly so. he knows he's only attracted to men at least
wallter: gay, has the same view towards gender as mark. he's mostly male but twenty dollars is twenty dollars (nobody is paying him twenty dollars. he's just doing that of his own volition.)
pilby: canonically nonbinary and bisexual, not much to say here. probably frequented gay bars before they went to the beach that made them old.
gnarpy: trying to comprehend gnarpian gender and sexuality is like trying to comprehend the true form of an eldritch abomination, don't even bother
melanie: transgender lesbian #2
null: doesn't care about gender, canonically aroace. i feel like they would internalize this idea that they'll finally be "capable of love" once they attain individuality because of societal allonormativity, but even if they managed to do that they'd just end up realizing "actually ? yeah no i still don't care". them being aroace is unrelated to the robot hivemind situation, they're just like that
mozelle: pansexual, is the feminine equivalent to whatever pest mark and wallter have going on
stat: transgender lesbian #3
infected: weird case. kasper is a transgender bisexual man (he's in denial about the bisexuality though), but while infected is still bisexual, his sense of self has waned to the point where his gender is best described as "none pizza with guy beef". the gender equivalent of that image that's supposed to simulate what having a stroke feels like.
lampert: i've described lampert as "man-adjacent" before, and that's still the best descriptor for what his deal is. back to oddly specific metaphors, the gender equivalent of when you're making a mii on a console without the full range of color options, so you kind of just have to pick whatever is closest to what you want and use your imagination. also demisexual, and kasper's the only person he's ever been attracted to. deeply unfortunate for him.
scag: transgender lesbian #4. this one's Special because the transgenderism is canon, woaw!!
spud: dude his brain is actively falling out of his skull i think he has bigger problems to deal with. probably into guys though
prototype: analyzed and read tons of studies and articles regarding gender and sexuality, and then decided "wow!! this is really boring!!" and decided to never engage with either concept when it came to themselves ever again.
dr. retro: transgender lesbian #5. she helps pest do his shots because needles remind him of how he was tested on in prison and his hands shake too much. is probably the ceo of diy hrt when it comes to the regretevator cinematic universe
folly: lesbian, she's probably nonbinary but she has to attain true freedom so she doesn't really gaf about that rn
reddy: you know mangle? from five nights at freddy's? yeah.

Hellooo because I forgot about the whiteboard until like midnight of the expiration date I didn’t get the chance to gather final screenshots so many of people’s additions didn’t make the final post. These are all the most recent versions of the drawings I could find (and in some cases I had to edit them together)
Featuring additions from @/kursed-curtain, @/flowerbarrel-art, and numerous others (feel free to brag in the notes if you see yourselves!)
[ID 1: a bust of Jenny Coffield, a stick figure oc with short, wavy hair, a top hat adorned with multiple spheres, and a burn scar on her head, showing off a “top bomb”, a top hat shaped object with a fuse sticking out the top. Tagline text reads “it explodes in the shape of a top hat”. Around the bomb are golden sparkles and captions reading “SO COOL!”, “WOW!”, and “FUN SHAPE!!”. Below the bomb is a diagram comparing a standard cartoon bomb, captioned in red with “LAME” and an X mark, with the top bomb, captioned in green with “COOL”. To the left of Jenny is three Toppats sitting around a meeting table. Two Toppats look impressed, one saying “wow!” and the other saying “We should use that”. The third Toppat looks annoyed and says “This is a stupid meeting.” End ID]
This one is probably my fav out of the bunch, just for the collaboration aspect.
[ID 2: a full body doodle of Reginald Copperbottom grinning evilly while holding a gun. Blue text reads “autism be damned my boy can kill”. A small doodle of someone’s Toppat sona or OC fawns over Reginald with multiple floating hearts. They have a bullet behind them with a red trail mark, as though they were shot with Reginald’s gun. Adjacent is a generic stick figure who is getting shot in the head. Text pointing to the stick figure reads “the cringe”. Yellow writing reads “ding dong the wicked cringe is dead”. End ID.]
At least one Reginald is mandatory. People got silly with this one.

[ID 3: a mouthless stick figure looks confused and mildly uncomfortable while looking at the viewer. Text next to them reads “my darling”, “precious blorbo”, and “beloved”. Below the text is a blob with eyes and no mouth in a happy expression, with writing reading “blorbo!” The stick figure is holding up a sign that says “I am literally just text????” End ID.]
Okay yeah you should know who this is by now
Gave them a Wile E. Coyote type sign because it fits the whole “no mouth can’t speak” type thing they’ve got going on.
[ID 4: a doodle of Jenny’s head with text reading “Your Toppat weapon ideas HERE!” Below is a drawing of Pike Cassino, a stick figure with a top hat decorated with slot machine wheels and horns, a gold tooth, and whiskery facial hair. a speech bubble pointing to him reads “Maybe a gun that doesn’t blast me back when I fire it…” Below the prompt text is a doodle of a glittering, gold cannon labeled “solid gold cannon”. Next to it is Jenny looking annoyed with a thought bubble reading “At least I’m paid well”. End ID.]
There were a LOT more additions to this prompt than I ended up grabbing, but with how spread out they were, there would be an additional five screenshots or so just to get them all.

[ID 5: a bust of Jenny waving an aromantic flag with a caption reading “aro gang”. Next to her is a drawing of a character labeled Harley, who has a heart shaped top hat and bangs, with a Toppat clan logo on their jacket and a paw on their hand. Harley waves to Jenny and is captioned with “aro gang!” End ID.]
Another that is sadly a lot smaller than its final version. The aro gang used to be bigger.

[ID 6: 3 images of a doodle of Ellie Rose. First image is of a head shot of Ellie. Second image is text reading “world’s smallest Ellie” with an arrow pointing to an indistinguishable doodle. Third image is the previous doodle zoomed in to show a very small head shot of Ellie, approximately the size of the tip of the arrow. End ID.]
World’s smallest Ellie.
[ID 7: A whiteboardfox drawing with a thick border around it, as though it’s an external image that’s been copy-pasted. The drawing is of Burt Curtis, a stick figure with headphones and a top hat, stylized. Here he has messy, wavy, short hair and highlights in his eyes. He’s reading a magazine titled “#3 ACTion”. To the left is a frog-with-glasses icon with text reading “gotta get sillier with my art”.
To the right of the copy-pasted drawing is a frog with glasses on his hands and knees, with the glasses lenses opaque to hide his eyes. Text below reads “just found out my drawing didn’t save can’t have shit on whiteboard”. End ID.]
Yeah so I was… struggling with this one. The frog in the top left was originally a thing I tried to add to ALL my additions up make them easier to find. But because of WiFi issues, not only did none of them save, but half my Burt drawing was gone too. Fortunately, because I was already struggling bad with it, I had the foresight to screenshot the drawing once I was done with it.
[ID 8: a doodle of Reginald Copperbottom with his hands on his hips while smoking a giant blunt. To the right is a drawing of Reginald in the family guy death pose with a caption above reading “bad at smokign” [sic]. Below the whole thing is text in parentheses reading “(whiteboard if you’re gonna react my art please for the love of god let it be this one)”. End ID.]
Drawn immediately after the previous one. No further context needed.

*cackling while my silver hair catches the turquoise light* 🤗
My dearest mystical meddlers!
[Part 1: The Mahomes Situation]
Oh, you should see my anxious friend today, practically burning with disappointment while discussing our beloved songwriter's... interesting choices lately. And darlings, when they mentioned Miss Americana versus the current MAGA-adjacent situation, I couldn't help but consult the cards immediately!

The Ring (25) - Commitments and cycles
The Snake (7) - Strategy and calculated moves
The Stork (17) - Changes and transformations
The cards suggest there's a calculated commitment to this new public image, with transformations that seem to prioritize certain... strategic alignments.
[Part 2: Future Revelations]
But wait! My curious friend couldn't help but ask about future statements regarding Trump policies. The flames in my cauldron danced wildly as I pulled:

The Key (33) - Revelations coming
The Rider (1) - Important messages
The Coffin (8) - Endings and transformations
Oh my, my, my... 😏 The cards whisper of a decisive moment ahead - one that will bring important messages but also mark the end of something significant.
As I always say while brewing my most truth-telling potions: sometimes the biggest revelations come after the longest silences! ✨
With eternal perplexity and prophetic wisdom,
The Alchemist Whisper 🔮✨💖
*PS: Remember darlings, card readings show energies that aren't immutable - though some choices certainly leave lasting impressions!
Oh btw... let's have a deliciously honest conversation about fandom and critical thinking, shall we? As you can see by my eternally perplexed smile, this is a topic that makes my golden flames dance with excitement!
Listen closely, my precious stargazers: having a critical eye towards your favorite artist doesn't make you a "hater" - it makes you a thinking, feeling human being! Imagine treating your faves like perfect deities who can do no wrong... *adjusts my turquoise and orange-embroidered shawl while rolling my eyes*
You can absolutely adore someone's art while questioning their choices. In fact, the ability to separate art from artist while maintaining a critical perspective is quite the magical skill!
Will we get answers to all our burning questions? 🤭 As I always say while stirring my most truth-telling potions: the universe reveals its secrets in its own time. But that doesn't mean we should stop asking the important questions!
Remember, my curious cosmic conspirators: blind devotion is for cults, not fandoms! ✨

“Person of Interest” - Beau Arlen x Reader
Part 3 (Final) of the “Guardian of the Gulch” Series (Read Part 1 Here, Read Part 2 Here)
Rating Teen
Beau Arlen x Reader
Tags: Fluff and Flirting, First Kiss (Finally! Get it Beau!)
Word Count: 2300
There's a new sheriff in town. And he just so happens to have parked his RV in your campgrounds. What's a park ranger to do with all that Texas charm strutting around on a fine pair of bow legs?
I'm participating in @jacklesversebingo and this part will fill my "Anonymous Gifts/Flowers" square.
Writing about Beau for the first time was so much fun. He's got such a sweet, gentle, charming, goofy way about him on the show. I am at least making sure in my story that Beau gets his kiss. (I have also been asked by a friend to maybe have a little "Big Sky After Dark" epilogue at some point. Will see.) I've gotten a lot of inspiration from my bingo card. Thoroughly enjoyed participating and hope to mark off every square... at some point.
Also, diving into Helena history for this date I came a lot of interesting facts and fun places along Last Chance Gulch Street.
Image created in Canva (credit for photo used: “Big Sky”/ABC)
Since you’d asked Beau out on a date - apparently, that was news to you - it was also up to you to pick the when and where. That was how he'd left it that night around the fire, anyway, with a wink and a smile.
It had been a busy few days after the fourth of July for the both of you. But, you’d settled on a Sunday evening, crossing fingers there were no abductions or bank robberies.
There was never a dull moment in Helena.
You’d decided on a time and place. The plan was to meet at The Windbag Saloon and Grill. You sat at the bar, sipping your Huckleberry Mule.
Your eyes dart to the door every time it swishes open. When you finally spot him entering, a sharp inhale steadies you. The nerves that wound you up all day threaten to release fast enough to spin you like a top upon the stool.
His gaze skates over the scene once, twice. The double-take and zoning in on your face when he clocks you forces you to exhale. You wish it didn’t sound like a frightened puppy. Thank goodness he can’t hear it. Recollection fills his face, and that sunbeam smile melts you.
He takes the stroll over. You internally confirmed sitting at the farthest end of the bar was the right decision. It gives you ample time to enjoy the view of the sheriff and prepare to be devastated by all that handsome up close.
He has a full, bouncy head of hair you’d kill for. Scratch that. You’d kill to run your fingers through it. His denim jacket with a fleece collar and hints of the warm and fuzzy liner has you imagining him offering it to you on a chilly walk. You only want to get a better look at the broad shoulders and chest underneath. The shine of his silver belt buckle directs you further south for probably a second longer than would have been appropriate to stare.
You sip a little more liquid courage.
“Did I get the time wrong?” he asks, confused and already looking apologetic when he meets you at the bar. He strums a few fingers on the countertop.
“Nope.” With a head shake, you offer the adjacent stool with an outstretched hand. “I was extra early. And you were early.”
He sighs and slides in beside you. “If you’re early, you’re on time. That’s what I was taught, anyway.”
“Slow day at the office?” you ask.
The bartender drops a coaster and a napkin in front of Beau and asks what he’s having. He requests a beer, then returns to your question in a flash. “Not particularly. Why do you ask?”
You decide to try the all-knowing approach. “You had time to have flowers delivered to Linda Devonshire.”
The caught-off-guard smirk gives him away. “Me? Flowers to Linda?” He tuts. “Why would I send flowers to a married woman?”
“Oh, I don’t know. Probably because you were as ecstatic as everyone else in the park, knowing she was packing up and heading back home. I’ll bet you had the date circled on your calendar.” You spin in the seat a fraction. Inadvertently, you swish a knee over his denim-covered thigh while attempting to cross your legs.
He reacts a fraction to the touch, staring at the floor between you. His lips purse, and his brows lower. “Well, being as happy as the rest of those in Black Sandy State Park is not enough motive to suspect I’m the one that sent the flowers. Not very good detective work. Need a little more proof to convict.”
“Hm.” You shrug and wait for him to prod you more for your reasoning.
Instead, he licks his lips and smiles. “I didn’t recognize you dressed as a civilian.”
You straighten up and toss the hair back over your shoulder dramatically. “Didn’t think I could clean up this well?”
He shakes his head, all serious. “Nah. I just didn’t think you could get any prettier.”
That shuts you up.
~
“Yellowfin?” The server asks the both of you, now at a table after finishing your first round of drinks at the bar.
Your hand raises.
After the sandwich plate lands in front of you, the server confirms to Beau, “And the Vigilante for you?”
Beau nods, rubbing hands together, taking in the contents of his meal with high brows. “Yes, indeed.”
“Anything else right now?”
Beau points to you in wait, but you shake your head.
“All good for now, thanks,” he answers.
You groan, looking at Beau’s burger. “There is so much going on over there.”
He lifts the bun. “Yeah. Candied jalapenos. Grilled ham and onions. An over-easy egg.”
“Not to mention the half-pound of beef underneath all that.”
He resituates the bun and wiggles it in place. “Don’t forget the huckleberry barbecue sauce. I may regret it later. Worth it.”
You laugh. “I hope so, for your sake. Otherwise, this may be a pretty early night.”
He chuckles. “I don’t think anything could mess up tonight. Even my poor menu choices.”
The certainty in his voice makes you smile. “Kind of surprising you haven’t stumbled onto this spot yet since you’ve been in town. Considering how close it is to the sheriff’s office.”
“Well, the Boot Heel is where I usually end up with Hoyt and Cassie.”
You nod. “There’s a lot of history along Last Chance Gulch Street. Worth checking out and getting acquainted. Being the new sheriff in town and all.” You bite into a french fry.
“Hey, I did some research.” He clamps his large, beefy hands around the large, beefy burger. “This street was between a bunch of mining claims, where a lot of gold prospectors got rich.” He nods and confirms, “Give me a second with this, if you don’t mind?”
You laugh and wave both hands in permission. “Of course.”
He bites down and chews. Eyes close. Deep in thought. “Oh, yeah,” he mumbles around the burger. “This was the worst idea in the best way.”
“Take it easy there.” You try to jest. Truthfully, you wouldn’t mind sitting back and enjoying the show.
He swallows and sips on his second beer. “Man, it’s good I walked ten minutes from the office. I’m gonna need fresh air to clear my head and some exercise after all this.”
“Maybe I can interest you in a little walk down Last Chance Gulch after this.” Your suggestion raises his cheeks with a grin. You add, “History lesson and all that to accompany your calorie burning.”
“I’d like that.” He dabs the barbecue sauce off the corner of his mouth. He thumbs towards the outside of the restaurant. “Know who the lady is on The Windbag sign?”
“Oh, that’d be ‘Big Dorothy’.”
“Big Dorothy, huh? She the original owner?”
“Not of the saloon. She ran a business on these premises. Got closed down in 1973.” You sample your sandwich and watch Beau enjoy another bite of his burger. You wait until he’s thoroughly invested in the act, swallow, and then continue. “It was a brothel.”
His face stills in mid-chew.
You giggle.
He exaggerates his munching for a few seconds more.
“The place was called ‘Dorothy’s Rooms’. She was actually very well respected in Helena. Donated to lots of charities, and then the police had to go and raid her establishment and shut it all down. You may wanna tread lightly, Sheriff. Dorothy’s ghost might not appreciate your kind under her roof.”
“Noted.” He clears his throat.
~
Your guided walking tour doesn’t have the intended effect of calorie burning. Instead, you sit with Beau in a green wooden booth at The Parrot Confectionery. You’re splitting a Parrot Special Sundae.
“Oh, man.” Beau indulges in his first spoonful. It’s wondrous to behold how much enjoyment the man has with his food.
The evening has been filled with light and easy conversation to start. Lots of laughter mixed with information gathering from both of you as the date wore on. You spill about your life, years back, out west. You aren’t ready to divulge much about the relationship you left behind except the marriage had not worked out as expected. Beau’s a bit guarded as well with specific details. Something had happened on the job, though, in Houston. Something alarming enough to have him quit the force. And you think it might be one of the reasons he was now divorced.
Beau’s eyes sparkle. “I’ll have to take Em here.”
You nod. “Definitely.” He lights up every time he talks about his daughter. It’s sweet and makes him even more endearing. It almost makes you feel bad thinking naughty thoughts as his tongue laboriously licks the fudge off his spoon.
“Gotta say, darlin’, it feels like you’ve given me the key to the city tonight.”
“And plenty of indigestion.”
“I told ya. Worth it,” he insists. It’s his turn to watch you eat a few spoonfuls. You focus on the strawberry scoop. He seems to gravitate toward the huckleberry flavor and completely avoid the split banana underneath it all.
“Well, we could walk a little more to the end of the street after this,” you suggest. “I mean, the old fire tower is down that way. But you’ve gotta know about that. Impossible to miss.”
“Oh, yeah, I know all about the Guardian of the Gulch.”
You smile. “Did I forget to mention that Linda Devonshire dropped off the flowers she got to the ranger’s office before she left?”
The spoon Beau is holding clinks the sundae bowl. “You did forget to mention that.”
You swirl your spoon in the vanilla. “Well, she thanked us and said the flowers would probably hold up better staying with us than the trek back home. And she also read the note aloud to see if we had any idea who the anonymous sender was.”
Beau sighs. “Of course she did.”
You tap a finger on your chin. “What was it exactly? Oh, yes. The note said, ‘Thank you for your excellent matchmaking skills. ~ a Guardian of the Gulch’. She was completely perplexed by it. Said she hadn’t gone out of her way to coordinate any dates or encounters in Helena. Didn’t know anyone well enough for that. But we did get to hear about how she’s introduced about a dozen people to their current spouses in her home state.”
Beau lifts both shoulders. A sheepish smile forms. “If it hadn’t been for Linda’s complaints, I might not have gotten all those chances to get to know you a little better. And we wouldn’t be sitting here now.”
“This all sounds very silver lining thinking.”
“I try. On occasion.”
~
You roll into a parking spot in the lot behind the Sheriff’s office, engine idling. Beau’s in the passenger seat.
“Well, I hope I didn’t keep you out too late.” He leans into the backrest. A couple of creaks emit from his spine. “I appreciate you walking with me up and down Last Chance Gulch after dessert. Between the beer and the beef and the banana split, every step counts.”
You smile. “This was nice. We should do it again sometime.” He opens his mouth, but you cut him off, “I know, you accept.”
The warmth of his fingers gliding over yours, gripping the steering wheel, tingles your skin. Half in the night’s shadow, his face scolds with scrunched lips and slitted lids. “Give a man a chance to ask you out properly, would ya?”
You laugh to soothe your nerves. “I didn’t realize I’d asked you out again. Hell, I didn’t realize I’d asked you out the first time.”
He tilts his head. “I may have pulled the trigger on that one. Guess I’m finding it hard to be patient when it comes to…” He trails off, quiets, and looks serious. You realize he’s staring at your mouth.
“Sheriff!”
You both flinch in your seats. Deputy Poppernak is heading towards the passenger side of your car. Beau straightens, and you oblige the greeting and roll down his window.
“Hey, Poptop.” Beau razzes.
“Thought you’d left hours ago.” Poppernak halts five feet from the car, spots you, and waves. “How’s things going, Ranger?”
“Just fine, Deputy. How about you?” you ask.
“Can’t complain. Done for the day after a lot of paperwork. Headin’ home.”
The three of you nod in unison for an uncomfortably long amount of time.
“Okay.” Poppernak offers a friendly salute. “Night.”
You watch the deputy hop into a family van and drive off rather quickly.
“Well,” Beau sighs, “this is gonna be all over the office in the morning.”
“This?” you question. Beau eyes you. “How do you think they’re gonna classify this?”
He smiles. “Well, I guess this would be me spending some time with a person of interest. And actually, I think I’m gonna need to spend a lot more time with this person of interest. So, would you give me the pleasure of taking you out on another date, darlin’?”
All you can do is nod. His mossy green eyes sparkle. Cool fingertips round the shell of your ear. You shiver as he traces your jawline, moving in to close the gap. And then, nothing but you breathing in his warmth as he exhales softly into the kiss. It’s gentle and careful. But he tests how your lips fit and press against each other from a few angles. He settles for a spell and feasts on your mouth.
He pulls away. His fingers trail from your chin after a sweet pinch. “Are you free next weekend?”
You nod, dazed.
He grins. “Good. I’ll pick you up at your place if you’re comfortable with that?”
You nod again.
“Thank you for the ride.” He hops out of the car and closes the door with a soft click. Leaning into the still-open window he leaves you with, “Be careful headin’ home.”
“You too, Beau.”
He smiles from ear to ear, taps the window sill, and walks to his jeep. You can’t help but wait until he slides into the driver’s seat and gives you a wave. You shift into drive and leave the lot.
You can’t remember much of the actual ride home. Your mind is filled only with thoughts of Sheriff Beau Arlen. They make you smile. Hum along to the radio. You’re light as a feather and full of hope for what’s to come.
All because of a Guardian of the Gulch.
~ The End ~

POTO 2011 has been watched but while I liked it, the musical wasn’t the Big Deal to me that I know it is for others. Sorry. :(
I do intend to get around to The Librarians episode commentaries eventually. Like a Star Trek DS9 re-watch, Dancing on the Edge remains on the back burner for the time being. Next up in my BBC Merlin re-watch is “The Lady of the Lake”.
Secret of the Wings and Wings of Starlight are ahead of Wicked and The Wizard of Oz on my list. Excalibur is on there somewhere as well. First off, though, I want to read A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic. Checking out the TLM 1989 book is an ‘eventually’ project.
My posts on Static Shock’s third season premiere will begin shortly; overall I enjoyed “Hard as Nails” as a good team-up episode between Static & Batman.
Leverage’s “The Rundown Job” was good, but also very unsettling about how it featured someone trying to induce a pandemic. As much as I’m enjoying the fifth season, I’m very much looking forward to meeting Harry & Breanna in the sequel show.
I’m only two episodes into Still Star Crossed, but I’ve been enjoying it enough to get the book to read afterwards to see the show’s origin and theorize what could have been. Like with Leverage Redemption, I haven’t bothered with avoiding spoilers if you’re wondering why my posts have been from the whole thing.
I do feel bad I didn’t know about it back in 2017, but it was a mix of primarily watching DVDs and there was some stuff going on for me that meant I wasn’t paying close attention to new shows at the time. I mean, a few years later I only got into the Alola era of Pokémon after it ended and I learned that it was a fun combination of slice of life and Super Sentai adjacent antics.
With it being summer, it should be a good time for me to watch the Orange & Decolore Island arcs. Should being the operative word. Though I’ll probably kick off any Pokémon watching with I Choose You although it’s my newest addition. I haven’t tried yet for any of the summer sync pairs in Pokémon Masters.
With its upcoming 30th anniversary, I want to check out the ‘diaries’ for Sense & Sensibility 1995. Especially as this December will also mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. … The ‘for Dummies’ book is to help me catch back up and also as there very well could be matters I don’t know about.
Lastly, full disclosure: I did appreciate what I did read of The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, but it turned I needed a longer window to pace myself through it than a library checkout to read the entire book. It’s the same reason Avatar: The Legend of Korra and I, Claudius are on the end of my to-watch list. The parallels to the current day are a little too strong. Leverage differs enough in offering up angry hope rather than being a tragedy of a republic turning into an empire (Star Wars & I, Claudius) or showcasing the rise of acute political differences during a time of technological advancement being amplified by power-hungry people (I have seen season 1 of ALOK and know it’s a trend in the other 3).
But shout-out to including Reva in the photos and for having a brief written moment of Leia recognizing her image.
Also I kept forgetting to mention that I found out Dame Siân Phillips (Livia in I, Claudius) voices Boddly in the English version of Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, AKA the video game that evidently features a de-aged US President figure as a supporting character. If I was any good at video games, I think I’d have to try that one out just to see the plot for myself.

Parkland students experienced their second deadly school shooting in 7 years
By Taylor Galgano, CNN
Five-minute read Published 1:00 AM EDT, Sat April 19, 2025
A vigil is held near the Florida State University student center on Thursday, following the shooting.
J. Miguel Getty Images/Rodriguez Carrillo CNN
During the Thursday shooting at Florida State University, Ilana Banner recalled thinking, "I kind of knew the drill already," as she sought refuge in the student union. Seven years ago, Banner was an eighth grader at the middle school adjacent to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the shooting that killed 17 people in Parkland, Florida.
I’ve been through this before. It was a similar situation,” Banner, 21, told CNN.
Now a senior at FSU, Banner was attending a bowling class on the ground floor of the student union Thursday when a shooter opened fire near the building, killing two people and injuring six others before he was shot and taken into custody by police.
It marked the sixth mass shooting in Florida and the 81st mass shooting in the United States in 2025, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
The bowling area has big glass doors and windows that face an open area where students can grab food or study. Through the windows, Banner started to see students sprinting to the bathrooms and hallways and leaving behind their belongings.
Though Banner couldn’t hear any gunshots over the loud music playing in the bowling alley, she instantly thought students were running from someone with a gun.
“I didn’t know why everyone else would be running and they were leaving all their belongings behind and definitely knew there was an emergency,” she said.
She and a friend immediately let her bowling instructor know that something was wrong. Banner claims that this instructor is Stephanie Horowitz, who is also a Parkland shooting survivor. Horowitz was a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the 2018 mass shooting on Valentine’s Day.
In an interview with CBS, graduate student Horowitz stated, "I had a feeling it was an active shooter situation before I even heard." “We were lucky that some of my students looked out of the glass doors and saw everybody running.”
On X, the father of Jaime Guttenberg, a 14-year-old who was killed in the Parkland shooting, Fred Guttenberg, wrote, "America is broken." My daughter Jaime was murdered in the Parkland school shooting. FSU was attended by many of her friends who were fortunate enough to survive the shooting. Amazingly, some of them were in the student union today and just part of their second school shooting. Josh Gallagher, who said he also survived the 2018 shooting, was in the FSU Law Library during Thursday’s shooting.
“After living through the MSD shooting in 2018, I never thought it would hit close to home again,” he posted on social media.
Memories of Parkland shooting
Horowitz led Banner and about 30 to 40 others to hide in the back office of the bowling alley, according to Banner. Some students also took shelter in a backroom where people play billiards.
It was at that moment that Banner started receiving texts from the FSU emergency line while an overhead alarm sounded. She was correct in her suspicions of a shooting. She started texting her dad every few minutes. She remembers thinking: was the shooter in the building? Was he outdoors? What floor was he on?

May is quickly shaping up to be one of the biggest months for new comic book releases in a long time. Marvel alone is going all-out this month, kicking off the massive Blood Hunt crossover and celebrating the milestone 50th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man with the return of Spidey's greatest nemesis. Elsewhere, DC has big stories planned for two of Batman's most important sidekicks, while Image is launching several promising new projects like The Whisper Queen and Grommets.
Read on to see all the biggest comics of May 2024, and be sure to let us know in the comments what you'll be reading this month.
Blood Hunt

Creative Team: Jed MacKay & Pepe Larraz
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 1
As is tradition for Marvel, the first week of May brings with it the start of a major summer crossover event. Blood Hunt pits the Avengers and other assorted heroes against a resurgent vampire nation. For the first time, the many vampire tribes of the Marvel Universe are united under a common cause, and that's bad news for the human world. Expect some major heroes to be turned to the undead as this massive war unfolds.
Blood Hunt will unfold in the pages of the core miniseries by Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz, but expect a lot of tie-ins to accompany that book. Most of Marvel's Avengers and Spider-Man-adjacent books will tie into the event, and several new limited series will also launch aside the main book.
Get Fury #1

Creative Team: Garth Ennis & Jacen Burrows
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 1
Garth Ennis doesn't often write for the Big Two publishers, but we're always excited when he does. That's especially true whenever Ennis delves into the grim and gritty world of Marvel's MAX imprint. Get Fury brings together Nick Fury and Frank Castle, arguably the two characters on which Ennis has left his greatest mark. In this Vietnam War-era story, Fury is captured by the enemy, leaving the military to dispatch Frank to bring him back by any means necessary. We're getting strong Apocalypse Now vibes from this book, which can only be a good thing.
The Whisper Queen #1

Creative Team: Chip Zdarsky & Kris Anka
Publisher: Image
Release Date: May 1
It's hard to go wrong with a creative pairing like writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Kris Anka, and we're big fans of their work on The White Trees. At long last, the two are reuniting for a new story set in the Blacksand fantasy universe. In The Whisper Queen, a former assassin named Javro must hunt down the king's killers before her son is murdered by a ghostly threat known as the Dark Whisper.
The Boy Wonder #1

Creative Team: Juni Ba
Publisher: DC
Release Date: May 7
DC's newest Black Label series comes from Monkey Meat creator Juni Ba. The Boy Wonder aims to present a fresh spin on the origin of Batman's son, Damian Wayne, and his rise as Robin. In this limited series, Damian is forced to confront the realization that he isn't Batman's first Robin and embrace the idea that he's part of a legacy bigger than himself. It sounds like a great primer for the character, and a worthwhile read for anyone who simply craves more of Damian's crimefighting adventures.
Doom #1

Creative Team: Sanford Greene & Jonathan Hickman
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 15
Jonathan Hickman's latest Marvel epic is quite the deviation from books House of X and G.O.D.S. In Doom #1, Hickman teams with Bitter Root's Sanford Greene for a very different take on the Fantastic Four's most iconic foe. This oversizedone-shot is set in the future, as Doom takes it upon himself to defend Earth from a ravenous Galactus. Can his mighty ego stand up to one of the most powerful forces in the Marvel Universe? We're about to find out.
Nightwing #114

Creative Team: Tom Taylor & Bruno Redondo
Publisher: DC
Release Date: May 21
DC just celebrated the 300th issue of Nightwing, and now they're speeding straight ahead into one of the most important chapters of Dick Grayson's costumed career. This issue kicks off "Fallen Grayson," a story arc that explores what happens when Dick loses his ability to leap. Can he still be Nightwing when his city needs him the most? This is the climax of Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo's excellent run, so it's definitely a bittersweet moment for fans of what has easily been one of the best superhero comics on the stands.
The Amazing Spider-Man #50

Creative Team: Zeb Wells, Marv Wolfman, Nikesh Shukla & Various Artists
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: May 22
Thecurrent volume of The Amazing Spider-Man reaches the all-important issue #50 mark this month, and it's shaping up to be a big one. This oversized issue features several new stories, including new material from guest creators like Marv Wolfman and Terry Dodson.
But the real news is that ASM #50 features the return of the Green Goblin. For years now, Norman Osborn has tried to prove that he's reformed and can be a crucial ally to Peter Parker rather than his worst nightmare. That all seems to be at an end, as Osborn becomes consumed by his sins once again. But is this simply a return to the status quo for Osborn, or do Zeb Wells and Ed McGuinness have another big twist in store? Hopefully we'll find out in issue #50.
Blood Squad Seven #1

Creative Team: Joe Casey & Paul Fry
Publisher: Image
Release Date: May 22
Superhero deconstruction stories are nothing new in comics, but it's not often that we see them directed at the bombastic, gritty heroes of the '90s comic book explosion. That's what Joe Casey and Paul Fry aim to do with Blood Squad Seven. This new series focuses on a team of former superhero celebrities who flamed out after the '90s, leaving a new generation to try and take up the mantle in 2024. We're expecting a book that both pays loving tribute to the '90s and skewers the more over-the-top aspects of the era, and it should be loads of fun.
Grommets #1

Creative Team: Rick Remender, Brian Posehn & Brett Parson
Publisher: Image
Release Date: May 29
We're immediately on board for any new project from Rick Remender, but this one looks especially intriguing. Grommets pairs Remender with comedian Brian Posehn and Tank Girl artist Brett Parson for a limited series steeped in 1980's skateboard culture and punk rock. The series is both a throwback to that bygone era and a timeless story of two Gen-X outcasts who find a new home in this scene.
Fall of the House of X Finale

Creative Team: Various
Publisher: Marvel
Release Date: Various
We all knew the X-Men's Krakoan Age had to come to an end sooner or later, and that finale is now close at hand. May marks the end of both Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X, capping off a journey that began way back in 2019's House of X and Powers of X. Will the X-Men finally triumph over Orchis? What sort of future will there be for mutantkind when all is said and done?
May also marks the end of both the current volume of Wolverine and the Immortal X-Men epilogue X-Men Forever. We'll see Logan leap into his latest and bloodiest battle with Sabretooth in Wolverine #50, while X-Men Forever #4 promises to close out with even more startling revelations about Krakoa and its survivors. All of this paves the way for Marvel's X-Men: From the Ashes relaunch in July.
