BAHRAIN, February 1986.

It's February, but it's the Middle East in the 80s, so the weather is likened to the decade. Nashwa is in a hospital and still, sweating profusely. She's unsure if it's the weather or the pressures of childbirth. She is freshly married, and this is her first baby, when a screaming little girl comes out, Imaan, is placed into her arms she cries along with her. She barely gets to hold her though before the beeping of a machine rings in her ears and before she can even meet her daughter, to know her, Nashwa El-Salem is pronounced dead, complications in birth.

Omar, her father, has no idea what to do with a newborn daughter, and with his job, he doesn't really have the time to raise her alone, that's when originally, her jadda stepped in, helping raise the young child until she was of school age, and then, there was pressure for her father to remarry, to find someone to run the home while he worked. By the time young Imaan is seven, Omar is remarried, and expecting another child.

Their stepmother isn't from here, the States, actually, here as an expat, working for the embassy, and their little sister Laila looks more like her than their father. Imaan is barely eight but she knows that things have shifted.

They go back and forth from Bahrain to Washington often enough, two homes, and to Imaan, it feels like two families. Her father and herself, and then him and his wife and Laila. There is a passing comment about how she can't let go of a mother she never knew, and as Imaan gets older, they know that's true.

by the time Imaan is seventeen, laila is 10, and they are fully moved to Washington, leaving Bahrain, and everything Imaan has ever really known behind. They finish their last year of school in the States, and it is so different Imaan feels out of place, and alone. She tries to fit in, and tries to be the perfect daughter at the same time, but those two don't align. Raised strict Muslim, Imaan is used to a set of rules, and the western high school system is mostly not set up for them, especially in 2005. Her connection to her home and her faith gets lost somewhere along the way, more fights with her father about his expectations, about his wife and his other daughter, about how she will never be good enough. He calls her disrespectful and a disappointment, and she tells him she applied for college in Scotland far away from him, and the look on his face tells her she's gone too far, but the plans have already been set in motion.

The University of Edinburgh is a dream and an awakening. Imaan is still shy, an introvert one would say, but also more willing to explore who they are. Kissing a girl for the first time is like a rebirth, trying cigarettes, alcohol, and even drugs feel like things that make her stray from the staunch religious upbringing she had, and yet, the lack of restraints feels good.

By the time she graduates with a degree in English, she knows she is different, and she's not sure how much her family will like that.

She moves back home for a while and works in a library as an assistant, and the freedom college abroad brought her dwindles, it's back to dad's rules. her sister is just sixteen, and while they were never close, their relationship is not bad, but Imaan finds there isn't much they have in common. Her sister likes concerts, has a large circle of friends, and spends her time trying new makeup techniques, and that's all fine, except Imaan can't relate to it, as someone who finds their enjoyment in reading the newest romance boo release, or

She moves around a bit after two years at home, does two years in California, and two more in Chicago before moving with their roommate to New York. It's closer to home but totally different all the same, and it actually feels right. Unlike all the other cities. They get a job in a bookstore and share a two-bedroom with their roommate in Queens and life is okay, though not perfect.

PRESENT

Imaan brought Brownstone Books off the owner, who they worked for 8 years before she decided it was time to retire, and with a very small loan and the kindness of someone who took them in, they owned the place. It felt daunting, but the bookstore's popularity helped make the transition easier.

In those ten years since moving to New York, Imaan found that what was missing in her life was some sort of faith, and found a way to embrace spirituality and their sense of self, a sometimes uneven, but more comfortable balance. They got cat and name it sush, and they still live in a two-bedroom, though their roommate moved out recently to live with her boyfriend, so they're on the hunt. They love to bake, spending the time not in the bookstore either doing that or reading (books, or fanfiction, thank you). They don't see their family often, though her sister is 31 now, and has visited a few times.

Chapter Forty-Four: The Bloody Nose

Marlene didn’t hesitate. She shrugged off her peacoat and hung it on the coat rack without saying anything before she unraveled the scarf around her neck and hung that up as well. Marlene glanced around the house. Of course, her eyes lingered on the wall of pictures. She walked towards it, her arms crossing over her chest.

“These are from when you went to France?” Marlene asked.

Sirius shoved his hands into his trouser pockets, his face pinching. “Yeah. We stayed at the Black holiday home. I think Harry had a good time.”

Marlene’s hand reached out, grabbing a framed picture sitting on the table below the wall collage. It was another one of Sirius and Harry in France (which seemed to be all the current pictures he had of the two of them) standing in front of the sea. They were only in their swim trunks, their arms wrapped around each other. Harry beamed in the photo, looking more like James than he had ever in his life. It was one of the few photos Sirius had of Harry as a teenager looking relaxed and carefree, younger than his age. 

“He looks like James here,” Marlene whispered. “Funny how something as small as a smile can change his entire face.”

Sirius nodded. “Yeah, it is.”

Marlene sat the photo down, making sure it was centered between the other pictures. Her hand brushed underneath her eyes before she turned to face Sirius. A fake smile crossed her lips as she tucked her hair behind her ear. Sirius noticed for the first time since she had regained her memories that she had re-pierced her ears, the little earrings running from her lobe up to her cartilage. Five in total. Just like there had been before. It was something Bella Riddle didn’t wear. But Marlene McKinnon loved her piercings and tattoos.

“Thank you,” Marlene said in a sincere voice. “For inviting me here to tell me things concerning Harry. I know, well…” she trailed off, a huff of air escaping her lips. “I suppose you don’t have to because you gained custody. I would never fight you for custody, not when the two of you have developed such an amazing bond. But I’m grateful that you’re finally letting me in.”

“I didn’t mean to not include you,” Sirius admitted, attempting to push down the guilt building in his chest. “I guess… well, I stupidly assumed you’d form your own relationship with Harry when you were both ready. I didn’t think about the shit storm surrounding Harry and how you would probably want to be involved in it. When I say shit storm, I really mean shit storm, Marly. It’s a lot.”

Marlene wrapped her arms around her stomach. “The prophecy.”

Sirius’ lips pulled. “I mean, yeah, that’s a component. But there’s something worse that’s happened.”

Marlene’s brows furrowed. “What?”

“We need to wait for Andy,” Sirius replied. “I just found this out not long ago, and I think I need Andy’s help to accomplish what I need to accomplish. She’s the only potioneer that I trust at this point.”

“What we need to accomplish,” Marlene insisted.

Sirius shook his head. “Nope, this a purely me thing. Not because I’m pushing you away or anything. It’s because of my super special Gaunt blood.”

Marlene arched an eyebrow. “Gaunt blood?”

Sirius jutted his lower jaw out. “Voldemort’s mother was a Gaunt.”

A knock sounded at the door. About fucking time. Sirius briefly raised his eyebrows up at Marlene before he turned to open the door. Andromeda bustled in, pulling her gloves off her hands and letting out a string of apologies about how an intern exploded a cauldron at work. She froze midsentence when she saw Marlene standing there. Her gray eyes flickered between Sirius and Marlene, her face trying to remain neutral but Sirius saw the corners of her lips twitch.

“Marlene!” Andromeda greeted as she crossed the room to give the younger woman a hug. “What a pleasant surprise. I thought my cousin was going to be stubborn when it came to you for the rest of his life. You know how he is.”

Marlene smiled at Sirius over Andromeda’s shoulder. “I think he felt bad after our disagreement.”

Sirius sucked in a breath and held it.

Distinguishing features: A series of flogging scars crisscrossing her upper back, a thin scar following the path of her shoulder from collarbone to upper arm, an ourobouros tattoo around her left bicep, three piercings in each ear (two lobe, one helix).

Fighting style: No distinct style, however she does prefer to keep her opponents at a distance where she can employ her weapon and magic to defeat them.

Magic: Elemental, offensive. Would’ve been a battlemage in the Umgadi if her parents had anything to say about it. Also has employ of soul magic (which she almost never uses) thanks to experiments by Shang Tsung involving the Well of Souls (MK11 only, at this stage).

Weapon: A series of enchanted metal spikes called “thorns” that she can engage individually or as a string.

General attire: Three-quarter sleeve shirt, fingerless gloves, cropped hooded jacket, seven-eighth leggings under denim shorts, high-top sneakers, snake-shaped jewellery around her biceps and wrists, three silver chains attached to the belt loops on her left and right hips, thorn pouch fastened to left thigh.

Family history: Once the only daughter of the mercantile Altona family in Outworld who prospered by trading in goods across the realm, Tora is now the only recognised member of the family by Outworld decree. Her mother and father were executed by order of Empress Sindel for financing a failed rebellion against the throne; Tora escaped persecution by proving she was neither involved nor in Outworld at the time. This didn’t stop supporters of the rebellion from threatening her life should she return to Outworld, so she simply stayed in Earthrealm and focused on improving her magic and studying to be a medic.

Phenomenal. It was called the Little Red Dog. We're going to that restaurant tomorrow and I'm praying if I ask for it they can make it but I don't have my hopes up.

My ID says 5'2" but I think that's bullshit. An even 5'. Would've been shorter but I had my scoliosis corrected at 12 (I'm a terminator, baybeee) & I gained 2 inches from the surgery.

2 holes in each lobe, 1 nose ring, and a closed up lip piercing I wish I still had but not enough to get it re-opened. I hope to get several more.

tattoos?

Two so far, a semicolon on the back of my neck (gotten before the semicolon tattoo movement) & a paper crane on my right wrist in memory of my late best friend. I want to get several more and have been actively ignoring the itch because my big wedding ceremony is in October... but after 👀 I think I was a big crow on my back/across one shoulder. And a few other small ones I've been thinking about. I've also always wanted bats behind my ear so maybe that too.

glasses or contacts?

Glasses! I'd love to wear contact but, fun trivia for your Friday, did you know that taking birth control longterm literally changes the shape of your corneas? I didn't either. But I'm pretty sure that happened to me and now I can't wear contacts without extreme discomfort. So, glasses for me.

My current and forever obsession is Vignettes, the story my bestie and I are writing together. It's wild how this one storyline has become my entire personality, and I'm not at all mad about it.

This is such a hard question for me to answer cause I have wildly fluctuating obsessions and right now I'm most obsessed with my own fictional characters, but. Kaz Brekker will always have a place in my heart. I loved him from his very first appearance in Six of Crows. Same for Nikolai Lantsov in Shadow & Bone. I loved Alina for the longest time too but I think her depiction in the show soured me on her a bit, idk. I have a lot of strong feelings about the Netflix adaptation I could write a whole dissertation on. I've also held the Abhorsen series (& Sabriel) close to my heart since I read it literally in middle school. I re-bought Sabriel a while ago and need to read it again.

Piercing Refs: The Rulers

I want to start talking about the queens and kings more, especially as I have a lot of ideas for them and want to explore them individually more along with their relationships with their kids. One of my current projects I am working on on the side is their official refs, including both updated biographies/backgrounds for them as well as official drawn refs for them too. The only one I've made a full drawing for before was Soleil, but I will be giving her and everyone else updated references when I get around to them!

Right now since updating their physical descriptions, one thing I wanted to share was their piercings! I know some had earrings in the concept sketches I've drawn of them before, but I wanted to update those a little bit and share my current ideas for them. The only two who aren't included are Vulcan and Lian since they don't have any piercings themselves, but I hope you enjoy these!

- Soleil

. Soleil has double lobes, and her nips

. She usually wears hoops as her main earrings, and will either wear smaller hoops or studs for her secondary earrings

. Always had her main lobe piercings since she was a child, but only got her second set after she became an adult

. Got her nips first done several years ago, both as a surprise for her husband and because she wanted to for herself, and got them redone when she could after having her last child

. Has considered getting her daiths pierced or some other inner-ear piercings for a while, but it's not at the top of her priorities at the moment

- Noelani

. Noelani has double lobes, a conch, and a rook for each ear

. Always wears some form of dangling earrings for her main ones, with her other piercings being simple diamond studs

. Always loved piercings since her rebellious/wild younger years, but after becoming more mature as she became queen and a mother for the first time, the only ones she kept were in her ears

. She used to have more back when she was younger too, mainly a lip piercing, a navel piercing, and her nips, but took them out over the years and particularly the latter ones when she started having children

. Has considered getting one of them done again in recent times, but is content with just her ear piercings for now

- Caelestis

. Caelestis has triple lobes and a singular set of cartilage-helix for each ear

. Usually wears gold hoops for his main earrings, while his other earrings either being simple gold studs or small hoops

. Always loved piercings since he was young just like his wife, but didn't get most of his till his adult years

. Enjoys having fun with his piercings, especially wearing more extravagant ones for royal events or 'just because' sometimes

. Has thought about possibly getting other piercings before, but isn't focused on that at the moment

- Arethusa

. Arethusa only has a single set of lobes

. Either wears pearl or diamond studs most of the time

. Never wanted to get anything else done nor did she really approve of excessive piercings for the longest, but has eased up a little bit about that over the years

- Demeter

. Demeter has a few piercings, mainly a single set of lobes, her left nostril, and her nips

. Got her ears pierced when she was a child and always loved wearing fun earrings growing up

. She got her nose pierced in her teen years, not long after her 'Coming Of Age' Ceremony

. Since she became an adult she always wanted her nips done too, but didn't get around to getting them pierced till her youngest child was a toddler

. Has thought about possibly getting more ear piercings before but could never figure out a set arrangement she wanted, but she is content with just her current ones now

- Enki

. Enki only has a single set of lobes

. He didn't have any piercings for the longest time nor did he think they would fit his personal style, but got his ears pierced for the first time a few years ago

. Most of the time he only wears simple and small studs, but sometimes will wear ones with more floral/nature motifs

Tattoo and Piercing Refs: Main Group

Something I've thought about doing recently, since unlike my other stories, I never shared any visuals for these guys' piercings and tattoos. I first described them in separate posts(the piercings and the tattoos) last year, but for these visuals I thought it would be easier just to combine them into one.

One thing to note, but for the visuals for the tattoos, they are mainly for the vibes and wouldn't be the exact tattoos they would have, as it was hard trying to find ones that fit exactly with what I was thinking(such as Shadow's tattoos being mostly black/gray shaded but with tiny pops of color here-and-there). Especially when it came to their matching friend group one, because I always imagined it as them each drawing a heart that is of their favorite/main color, then getting the other three's hearts tattooed. Since it was both difficult finding tattoo references of three hearts, let alone would it be even more difficult to find them in the different color combinations, I just found ones that fit closer to the arrangement and locations I was imagining for them.

Regardless, these were still fun to find and put together, and I hope you enjoy! :3

. Currently, the only piercings she has are her triple lobes and double sets of cartilage, plus her left eyebrow, but as she is over 18 pretty soon she gets more

. She has triple lobes, two sets of cartilage, a rook, and a tragus piercing in each ear

. She also has her left eyebrow pierced, a septum, philtrum, and when she is older, her nips(with skull-themed jewelry), that she gets done when she is in her mid-twenties

. All of her piercing jewelry is red or black usually, with her preferring hoops, cuffs, or spiky elements with them

. As for tattoos, she currently only has one, of a red heart design with little swirly bits, located on the back of her upper-left arm near her elbow

. When her and the others are in their early-twenties, she also gets the idea of them all getting a matching tattoo, where they each draw a heart filled in with their respective favorite colors and then get the other three's ones tattooed

. Hers is on her left collarbone

. As she has a big love for tattoos, she plans to get several of them

. These include full patchwork sleeves that start just over her shoulders/back and spill all the way onto her hands, ones going all the way down the side of her legs, and a couple of back ones

. Most of these would be in traditional black-and-gray with occasional pops of color here-and-there, of witchy or spooky motifs with a couple cuter and softer ones, and some are dedicated to her family, friends, children once she has them, and love of her life, and all were mostly designed by her as she is an artist herself

-- Suzie

. Currently, the only piercings she has are double lobes, a couple flats for each ear, her left nostril with a stud, and her navel with dangly jewelry

. As her 18th birthday is just around the corner, she is planning on getting her daiths pierced, as well as her first tattoo

. Prefers pearls, pink diamonds, and heart shapes in her piercing jewelry, but she is also a fan of any kind of cute or fun jewelry(like ones from Claire's or other similar stores)

. As for tattoos, she is planning her first one to be a pink bow on the nape of her neck, to commemorate her old favorite hair accessory

. Her matching friend group one would be on her left ankle

. In terms of her other future tattoo ideas, they would include a fairly large, colorful candy and sweets-related one on her left thigh, cherry blossoms ranging from her right shoulder to her collarbone, a crescent moon with the quote “I love you to the moon and back” on her lower-back, and once she has children she would get simple black hearts with their names going down the side of her lower-right leg

. Currently, the only piercings he has are a single set of lobes, that he got done for his 18th birthday

. They are the only piercings he would want done, as he does not think other piercings would suit him or his aesthetic much

. Most of the time, he only wears small studs, whether simple diamonds or more cute and fun ones when he goes shopping with Suzie

. As for tattoos, he was also unsure about getting any done, however he eases up to the idea once Shadow brings up the idea of them all getting a matching tattoo

. His matching friend group one would be his first, located on his right shoulder-blade

. In time after that he would get a few more, with his ideas including a simple VHS tape design on the inside of his right forearm, the lyric “Hopelessly devoted to you” on his left shoulder-blade with a simple outline of a video-game controller next to it, and once he has children he would get their names on his right bicep

. Currently, he is the only one out of the group who does not have piercings or really wants them, as he doesn't really think any would suit him or his aesthetic that much

. However if asked, the only piercings he would entertain the idea of getting would be his lobes, as they seem simple enough to get, or his eyebrow, if he had to get something "bolder"

. As for tattoos, he is also the one most hesitant to think about getting any in the future, not really knowing if he could pull them off or if they would work for him with how he’s already covered all-over in freckles

. However, he decides to give them a try when Shadow suggested getting matching friend ones, with his matching friend group tattoo being his first one and located on his left bicep

. After that one he would be more comfortable getting more in the future, with his ideas including “Cherish those closest to you” done in a simple and slightly small font between his shoulder-blades, something small and minimalist of video game controller buttons on the inside of his left forearm, and once he has children he would get their birthdays done in a simple and small font on his right forearm with simple green hearts between them

what’s your phone wallpaper : I have separate pictures for the lock screen and home screen. The first one is of Ankha but the second is of Blue and Harley in my old apartment back in 2021. It was the only decent picture I have of those two together without them trying to kill each other. Harley looks quite offended that Blue is near her in this.

what are you wearing right now : Black sweatpants and light blue t-shirt. Also wearing a navy sweatshirt because it’s kind of chilly in my place.

piercings / tattoos? : I have one piercing on each ear lobe. I used to have piercings elsewhere like studs on the side of the nose, Monroe piercing (a kind of lip piercing meant to look like a beauty mark), and ear cartilage piercings. I took them off except the ear lobe piercings years ago, but if I still have them, then I would have to take them off because of work.

I have several tattoos though. I have moon phases running down my spine with a purple and blue watercolor background and black stars. I also have a stylized jaguar with a moon behind it on my left shoulder blade. This matches my twin sister's tattoo but hers has a sun instead of a moon. My left forearm also has a purple crystal wrapped with vines and pink flowers. There are small purple and black stars above the right collarbone. I had several black and purple stars on my right upper arm, but I have a half sleeve of flowers to cover it up since I always wanted floral sleeve. I need to get it colored in though. It's just I haven't done it yet because it can get expensive.

The studio I go to now charges about $150 an hour, so I can't get it colored right away. The price is typical for most tattoo studios and the artists deserve that for all the hard work they put into the tattoos. Also debating on changing artist or studio since I haven't really clicked with my current artist in the past three appointments. I would love to go back to an Indigenous studio like I did in ND. I would like to get a couple more tats after the sleeve.

glasses ? contacts? : Glasses. I struggle with contacts because of how sensitive my eyes can be. I have tried with contacts for years but they never work out.

last thing you ate? : Indian taco (it's also called by other names like Dakota taco. It's basically a taco but instead of a shell or tortilla, it's on fry bread.)

current obsession : Right now, trying to get my last paper done and work towards prepping for comps and dissertation.

Yes! Three times in fact, each time I've moved to a different house. I absolutely love painting the walls and actually have plans to repaint my current room

I recently got a lot of new followers and I’d like them to get to know me. So here and some random facts about me. Please don’t be afraid to ask any questions if I don’t answer them here!

Dear followers (and everyone),

My real name is Kira, but I prefer to be called Stitched.

I have lived in London my whole life and yes, I have a ✨ BRITISH ✨ accent.

My pronouns are she/her and I don’t mind they/them.

I’m mixed raced with a black Jamaican father and white Irish mother.

I’m bisexual and polyamorous. Meaning I could love a two people at once and they could be a man or a woman. I am currently in a throuple.

I have dyslexia. A weird form that means I don’t say the words I’m thinking, I’ll say something else. Which absolutely sucks since I also have a lisp, meaning I don’t pronounce specific words right. Talking is VERY difficult for me, especially when I was a kid.

I have asthma. I had an asthma as a kid that destroyed one of my lungs.

I’m allergic to lavender (only the plant).

I’m a INTJ. My biggest flaw is I always chose my head over my heart. I’ll go with something that is right on page rather than what feels right. Logic is always right to me.

I have two siblings. One older half brother and one younger twin sister. My twin and I have 60 seconds apart, I’m the older one. We don’t talk. But I’m very close to my brother though and we live 10 minutes from each other.

My brother calls me Lestrange, a reference to Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter. I call him Potter as his real name is Harry.

Since my brother and I are only half siblings, I am both the oldest and the middle child. Oldest to my father and middle to my mother.

My brother and I have 16 years apart (I know right 👀) meaning my mother was older when she had me and my sister. After my brother moved out, I became the main caretaker of my mother when I was a kid and teenager. Moving out was difficult but I had to.

I had dreams of being a doctor but as life takes you on different journeys, I’m looking at other careers right now. AKA my grades are too low to be accepted into medical school.

My favourite singer was Amy Winehouse, I grew up on her music. And Gorillaz. My favourite songs are Dare by Gorillaz and Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.

I also love Doja Cat. If you can’t tell, my music taste is a weird mix of everything.

I have several piercings. Two normal ear lobe piercings (not sure what they are called), nose piercing (that I did myself at 16) and a belly piercing (that I also got at 16 - but I went to a shop for it though).

I’m looking at getting a tattoo done now and possibly another piercing (in THAT place 👀😅).

When I’m not writing fanfiction, I’m working part time as a nanny and a waitress. I’m looking at started college later this year.

I started reading fanfiction when I was 9 and started writing it when I was 11. I am currently 24.

I didn’t start writing smut or nsfw though until last year.

I love Marvel and DC, but Marvel more. My older brother got me into Marvel comics when I was young.

My favourite Marvel character is Ms Marvel (Kamala Khan). I related to her so much as a kid when I first started reading the comics. I’m looking forward to her TV show next month.

My second favourite Marvel character is Peggy Carter. I’m so gay for her.

My favourite Marvel show is WandaVision.

My favourite Netflix show is The Umbrella Academy, which I do write for.

→I'm this close to booking an appointment next week to get a third on both lobes (if I can find a parlor that is reputable) and I'm so tempted to throw in a cartilage piercing like a conch or plain ol' helix. I love piercings but I heal really slow so that's the reason why it's taking me so long to get all the ones I want. My sis n' law recently got a cute nose piercing and I'd love one of those little gem ones on the nostril but that will take more research on my end and asking her what the upkeep is like.

→So funny you're asking me these questions because I've been thinking about this stuff lately!!! No. Not currently. If I got one it would be something music related (like a symbol or quote because music is not only what I went to school for BUT it's a huge part of me), or an owl!! I LOVE owls!

→I have to say Christmas. Like it's cold, it's sometimes snowing where I live, I have a woodstove and I make cider on it every WEEK in the wintertime especially during December. And I just love the colors and decor!?!!? I love the music too?! Look I love Halloween, too (but it's always HOT here during Halloween which kills the mood), but my birthday is late November (and sometimes on Thanksgiving Day which is a bummer lol) so I am caught in the end of fall beginning of winter holidays and weather and I lean towards Christmas. I leave the tree up until February (it's fake so I can) I kid you not it kills me taking it down it's so pretty and I love looking at it when the rest of the house is dark and it's the only light.
