sometimes i get a little sad about the way being at the phd home for a long time makes me want to like. take off the academiasona and just breathe for a bit. bc i love my friends here but our lives are v fundamentally different and this becomes glaringly obvious when one of them mentions their summer home or says they're taking their mum to the folkwang museum for her bday or when they randomly have cremant in the house and i instantly feel like im wearing some kind of Bildungsbürger skinsuit they tailored for me and it doesn't fit right. but then. these are the same people you can send a silly little poem to that you wrote about a rotten lemon and they'll reply straightaway saying they love it and it reminds them of this one contemporary sculptor who makes giant bedazzled rotten lemons. and for a second this whole thing makes sense

The Mischief of the 501st (Oneshot)

Synopsis: Ever wonder what mischief the boys in blue get up to? Pairing: None Words: Just over 2k Requested by: Im Busy Sleep on Quotev

The war was tough; no one could deny it. If the constant terrors and trauma of the war itself didn't get to those on the front lines, then the traveling from battlefield to battlefield did. Being stuck on the same ships, surrounded by dura steel walls and grated or black shiny floors, greeted with the same colors of hyperspace and the same droids wandering the never-ending halls. The threat of danger looming around every corner, even when on shore leave. 

There were some, however, who could brighten even the worst of battles, whether that be by telling jokes, speaking their minds at the most inopportune times, pulling pranks around the halls of the cruisers, or even answering questions with sarcasm. A few could impersonate like no other, whether of their commanding Jedi, random Civvi's or Senators, or occasionally each other. Comet from the 104th was particularly good at impersonating members of the Jedi order, both old and young. There has yet to be another who could beat his impression of Master Yoda. Waxer and Boil could beat the most when it comes to sarcasm. In contrast, Gregor could win over anyone with his flirtatious ways and lack of mind filters. If he thought something, it was guaranteed he would voice it, regardless of whether he ended up offending someone. 

The Coruscant Gaurd didn't lack in humor. Although at first look, they appeared serious and as if they didn't know the meaning of fun, that was anything but the truth. Fox and Thorn were always in a playful battle for the grand prize of the best coffee mug. Thire could often be found dancing down the halls, especially on quiet days. Hound was always fussing the massiffs, throwing anything he was sure they would chase, whereas Stone, more often than not, was flirting with the senators or playing pranks on the rest of the guard. There was a tally in the main office to see who tripped over the most when out in the field, and Fox had an assassination plot going, although no one knew if he was serious about it. 

But none could beat the 501st, especially for mischievous antics. The 501st were considered among the best troopers the GAR had to offer, alongside the 104th and 212th. Their mischief was almost legendary, even more so when their commanding Jedi, Anakin Skywalker, and his padawan Ahsoka Tano, would join in. It was almost a running joke among the GAR now. Wherever the 501st was, chaos and mischief would be close behind. Their antics away from the battlefield never seemed to fail to draw an eye roll out of Wolffe and get even the grumpiest bar hoppers at 79's to smile. There was no end to their mischief. 

If one were to ask Ahsoka what her favorite prank or joke was, she'd always say there were too many to list. Anakin would say the most annoying by far was the helmet switch-a-roo, especially when it happened on the battlefield. Fives and Echo had started it; at first, no one noticed anything was up; both Arc Troopers had continued their duty as the other. But that changed when Obi-wan requested Fives to accompany him for something, and only for whom he believed to be Echo followed instead. Ahsoka had chuckled upon the pair removing their helmets to reveal Fives had indeed followed the instruction given. 

Jesse and Kix would often switch helmets, although they did nothing more than that. Tup joined a few times with Hardcase, occasionally with Dogma when the other didn't pay attention. Rex had caught on eventually, although he didn't do anything other than shake his head and continue as normal. 

Pranks on each other weren't out of the question, either. A few times, Anakin had walked into the barracks to find blaster holes in the walls and a pair of troopers hiding in the corner. When asked what happened, a list of things was given depending on the troopers. Jesse and Kix said once there was a fly with a bazooka, and Fives and Echo said there was a spider; when asked why they shot at it, both simply replied it had more legs than them. Tup and Hardcase said something about ghosts or some flying creatures, depending on how creative they were that day. Appo had by far been the oddest answer; he didn't say any creature or anything with a weapon, merely stating the force made him do it. 

Ahsoka hadn't escaped the chaos either. Normally, the pranks on her were more playful and usually occurred around her birthday and Life Day. They would be silly things, like adding tinsel to her Jedi robes or baubles on the ends of her montrals. Other times, they'd wake her up by singing Happy Birthday or Life Day songs as loudly as possible, normally off-key. If, by chance, they were on shore leave when Life Day or Ahsoka's birthday rolled around, they'd simply com her with the pitchless songs or ask someone with technical skills to hack her communicator and datapad. 

Anakin, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. Armor and Helmet Switch-A-Roo were the tame jokes, as were the barracks ones. The troopers of the 501st weren't above playing the long game or roping both Rex and Ahsoka into helping. By far, their longest ongoing prank was the beeping devices. Several of them had been strategically placed, one in his barracks, another in the conference rooms, aboard his ship, in his quarts at the temple, and, of course, at the apartment he shared with Padme. The last of which Padme had placed herself. All the little devices were motion-activated and would send out a medium-pitched beep every few minutes. 

The one in the conference room had also gotten to Obi-Wan, Cody, and Mace Windu. The three Jedi had been annoyed by the constant beep, even more so when they couldn't find its source. Cody had been, too, until Rex clued him in on what was happening. From then on, Cody, like Rex, would say he didn't hear anything when asked about the beep. The beep joke had gone on for almost eighteen months before Anakin finally found one of the devices. 

Dogma was another who had been on the receiving end of jokes due to his determination to follow all rules and orders. Although the trooper had caught on quickly, it wasn't before he'd asked a few dumb questions to his commanding Jedi. After that, the jokes had been simple ones: hair dye in shampoo, wrapping everything in cellophane and tin foil, and occasionally, they'd gift wrap everything. Plastic cups of water or Jawa juice, all of them glued together to make it impossible to move on without spilling the others. 

Dogma would respond in kind, normally by hiding one boot or blaster. Occasionally, on his daring days, he'd wake up after everyone had gone to sleep and put the hand of those who pranked him in a bowl of water before settling to sleep again. He'd always wake up with a grin the following day, especially if there were a round of swearing greeting him. 

If you questioned if the other legions were safe from the antics of the 501st, then your answer was no. Fox and the Coruscant Gaurd had been caught so many times that they practically had a warning about it for new shinnies in the main office. Not to mention Jesse, Fives, and Echo had been put in detention so many times the trio had their own cell. The three had been arrested often enough. All Rex had to say when retrieving them was, "I'm here for my Arc Troopers." 

Wolffe had been the victim of a few air horn pranks; normally, early in the morning, he'd find the one rigged to the refresher door. Hardcase was normally the one daring enough to slip a whoopee cushion or two in Wolffe's seat at 79's. To say the commander of the 104th had been tempted to throw the culprits from the highest skyscraper was an understatement.

Fives and Echo would also be the first to dare Gregor to do something. The Commando never turned down a dare or a bet, even when the results were disastrous. The flirty Clone had done everything; his favorite was the strip tease on the bar of 79's. Even more so when it had gone down in history, the story was almost legendary among the younger cadets. 

Howzer, too, had been on the receiving end of jokes, as had Cody. Both had undergone changes to their armor more times than they could count normally when they were drunk. Thorn of the Coruscant Guard had also been on the receiving end of it. Normally, it was the color being changed. A few times, Cody's had resembled that of Clone Force 99 instead of the sunrise yellow he normally adorned. Howzer's teal normally changed to different shades of green and blue, normally accompanied by random doodles of hearts, smiley faces, cat ears, and anything else the trio of Jesse, Kix, and Tup could think of. 

The Jedi weren't safe either, especially the other Padawans, when Ahsoka roamed the halls of the temple. The young Cal Kestis had his hair braided in a way similar to Quinlan Vos; a yellow strip had been carefully pained across his face, too. Caleb Dume had his robes switched out for modified clone armor, referred to as JP-8376, much to the confusion of the young padawan. Others had found their datapads had been tampered with or codes to their rooms had been changed. A few had been on the receiving end of things being glued down or gift-wrapped. 

Barris Offee hadn't gotten away either, despite being Ahsoka's best friend. Her lightsaber had been replaced with dummy ones, the names of contacts on her communicator had been changed to random things, her cloak had been dyed a multitude of colors, and she had alarms going off at different hours of the night. Thankfully, the pranks never extended to the battlefield. 

The Knights and Masters hadn't gotten away. With help from the clones who had a talent for impersonations. Several Knights and Masters had been set all over the galaxy. Young Knights had been set on wild goose chases around the temple and sometimes the senate building. Older, more experienced knights had been sent off the world or been told their lightsabers or Jedi fighter jets were being recalled for some reason or another. The masters had been convinced Yoda had new assignments for them, only to find the Grand Master and be met with confusion. 

It took a while for anyone at the temple to realize Ahsoka and Anakin were behind the many pranks and confusion. Occasionally, they were helped by the Clones and Obi-Wan when he caught on, Plo and Quinlan helped on the occasions they were around during the chaos. 

The Senators hadn't been safe either. With the normal culprits of the 501st switching out their blue-painted armor for the red of the Coruscant Guard, they caused havoc in the senate building. Anything from "escorting" senators places only to go the wrong way. Purposely mixing up names or singing the most annoying songs possible. Tripping through doors as a way to impersonate Rex's talent. Conducting random searches for "suspicious items", even causing lockdowns by tripping fire alarms or messing with the security system. They'd rig random alarms to go off at different times and play havoc with the droids around the mushroom-shaped building. By far, the favorite was playing bumper cars with the Senate pods. 

No civvies escaped the chaos. If there were racing events happening, it was only a matter of time before the boys of the 501st appeared. Many times, there had been speeder chases or taxi jumping. It's been rumored Hardcase started a cult in the lower levels (although nothing has been confirmed). Poppers had been set off near 79's and other bars around the planet-wide city, and car chases had taken place when the Coruscant Guard had attempted to catch the rowdy lot. Every button on the elevators had been pressed, and trains had become another means of transport to jump to and from. 

When the 501st are around, pranks, chaos, and mayhem will follow with havoc sprinkled in. No one is safe from the pranks and jokes the boys in blue pull, especially when Anakin and Ahsoka are around to throw fuel on the burning fire.

ok thoughts for volume IV bc I actually enjoyed it a lot lol

also I'm currently on a Jin route (i might switch to claudia i have not decided) so that's important context lol

I Spy was an interesting concept for a game but if i can nitpick here, it felt much more like a firepit game than a challenge and that would be nice to have some variety since last week was the Heartbreaker thing and next week we have Excess Baggage.

For whatever reason I can't remember the format of the show rn but I think if the game is gonna continue with doing about a day more or less per volume, it should be like the show where there is at least one or two major events being either dates (where couples are either all in the same area, one couple goes out of the villa, or there's bombshells involved), challenges (where they go out onto the stage and do some physical challenge), or parties (which can include games). And right now I feel like we're getting three challenges in a row and I'd rather we change it up. But that's besides the point

anyway i believed Jack when he said his secret wasn't supposed to cause drama but I did not believe Theo at all and the fact that we got to tell him that later? Great choice. (and also so in character for MC to tell him off and him to just continue pretending like she didn't say that)

Also very flirty moments with Claudia is what is making this Jin route so hard. she's very forward and the fact that you can pursue her so soon is great actually. I thought maybe she and theo would share a slow burn route but it seems like it might be just Theo (or that you can't officially couple up with her later but apparently you can kiss her and go to the hideaway and stuff so that's cool).

I'm always hoping for non MC centered drama and we got it (but also there WAS MC centered drama too so that's even better)

I love to have a character to hate/dislike, so thank you so much Sophie and Jack. I can't imagine what it would be like with Luna and Jin though because they seem way more chill whereas I can see Sophie (a PERFORMER) doing all that and Jack (self proclaimed romantic) also just doing stuff to fit with Sophie.

And honestly still having residual feelings from the previous episode works. Like, yes to the Jack and Emel kiss (at least from Jack's POV about being insecure about Sophie,,, I'm not so sure about Emel but as someone who played it flirting with Oakley up until the end of Vol II and knowing Emel wants a romantic guy like Jack, I will let it slide). I kinda wish it implied more that Jin rejected Sophie so that's why she didn't pick him at the last recoupling so she's still hurt and still antagonizing MC and Jin for that reason. Otherwise it's just like, why are they still mad though?

Emel and Oakley are so cute. I also kept wishing after S5 and S6 that we got more strong couples in the game and I'm very glad they seem happy and if anything happens to them I'm gonna be so upset.

And tbh Jack and Sophie making it work is so nice too. Even though I think they're gonna keep having a lot of drama, it's entertaining and it's also great to have a couple that's probably gonna get dumped or split up at some point (and you know they're not gonna make it on the outside).

I don't care for Brad and Christy at all but why is that option 29 gems?? Like even asking for drama about the Islanders currently in the Villa is 17 gems (which I still don't think should be behind a pay wall but it feels like that one might be more relevant).

I do like that Jack is trying to be sweet to Sophie because even though he has also been an asshole to MC and her couple, he's still a possible route for if you replay, so that's nice they're not making the other LI's unappealing like in S6 (...yet???? im not giving fusebox the all clear yet)

I hate that Jack called his apology thing a game, I wish he just gathered everyone at the firepit and did the same thing but not called it a compliment game.

in the same vein, why did he invent the chemistry game because that feels like they should've gotten a text about that and then the next text about voting for the couple with the strongest chemistry to go into the hideaway would make more sense.

regardless, I really liked Jack's compliment to MC because that's how I've been playing this character and the fact he pointed it out, I feel like she'd love that. Also everyone else's compliments were fun too except maybe Sophie's which is funny.

And then he tried to make a joke at the end which was bold, but then I found out it might have been Jin's fault which is far more in character but again I don't know how well that would play out if I was playing a different route.

Also you can cheekily ask Oakley how he felt about Jack's joke about Emel being the best kisser in front of everyone and you best believe I did that

Then everything seems fine until the chemistry game and then suddenly Sophie, Jack, Emel, and Oakley are doing fine and everyone else is not and I love that turn in drama. Again, can't speak for a Theo route but the way suddenly Claudia is in between Jin and MC is crazy and Jin has a somewhat reasonable response (considering that fusebox wanted to give you space to go to the hideaway with Claudia). he probably forgave MC too fast imo but that's on me for playing the messy route.

Also Claudia's response after hearing Jin and MC are going to the hideaway together instead of her and MC is so good. Like she does convey she's disappointed but understands, and MC says there's still time for them, and Claudia's response is like it would blow your mind like we gotta give Jin a fighting chance, and I love that. also bc I'm indecisive so I'm glad her routes not closed yet.

as much as I like the drama, Tyler did not make a big splash so it does feel like we just got drama four volumes in a row, so I'm kind of hoping we get a bombshell mid challenge. Unfortunately, it's the excess baggage challenge, which I do like and I think we're due for this challenge to show up, but a bombshell showing up mid excess baggage challenge is literally what happens in S3 so I don't think I'm right.

I already posted my little joke about the Hideaway scene but yeah it's so much better than it's been recently. And like it looks like there's a few more options to change up the scene/dialogue so that's good they put effort into small stuff like that

and I'm not advocating for them hiding scenes behind a pay wall (like I rather them put these expensive gem choices behind drama I don't care about, that's fine) but like if there was ever a time to have a pay to win part of the game I would've made it this and not the kissing challenge. HEAR ME OUT: so it's like an early in the game hideaway first of all, technically you've known each other for like four days and if it comes up again for free, i wouldnt even miss it. Second, it kinda dismisses the drama that JUST happened. Like, either Theo or Claudia have just blown up their strong couple to pursue MC and their LI doesn't do anything? And the other couples vote for them anyway? Like get rid of the gem choice early on for MC and Jin to prove their chemistry and have them stumble anyway. Then after the Claudia/Theo confession, the gem choice is MC announces she wants another shot and because Sophie, Jack, and Emel like her for solving their drama they agree. And then MC can choose her second try with Theo, Claudia, or her LI. And then still has the chat later with her LI and then you win with whoever you pick (or I guess if you pick Theo then you don't bc I guess it's the slow burn route. Maybe you get a chat with him on the daybeds or SOMETHING lol). And third, Jack did this whole campaign to get him and Sophie to a stronger place so like there was a perfect backup couple right there.

and also some non volume specific thoughts:

I'm kind of excited to replay and like couple with Jack or Oakley at this point because I'm curious if the dialogue is much different. I really like Jin's dialogue and it fits his character, so I'm wondering how much of it is copy paste (but most people here are also on a Jin route so I can't cross reference damn).

also I would've reordered the past couple of episodes so that like Luna and Tyler would stay for longer and have a bigger impact but I don't need to make this long post even longer so maybe I'll post it some other time

still don't know why it's called tempting fate but if we're returning to the non themed seasons I'm not complaining

Well leshy and P03 oppose each other the most and it felt natural, Still at odds and also keep their personalities. I feel like grimmora and mags would switch though is because death is a very real thing, but magic is fantastical and actively tries to stop death. Grimmora would also be able to keep her more happy attitude with realism with magic as its more of system/skill. Mags would take death and the undead pretty good as well because. bro is just a lil insane all around. Also consider a skull army that he wont stop lying to and say they'll come back to life eventually. OK PAST THIS POINT IM GOING TO GO MORE IN DETAIL BUT THATS THE BASIC IDEA GO AHEAD AND USE/CHANGE TO YOUR LIKING IF YOU WANT, JUST GIVE ME CREDS IF ITS LIKE EXACTLY THE SAME. if you make it your own then you don't need to cred, idc this idea is like really basic imo.

L3sh, Scybe of Technology.

He's still stoic and very immersed in his world, However now with a new technological theming. He makes sure to have the player learn about the intricate details of the tech they use. He's kinda like a happy old I.T. guy, Using all of his tech to its max potential. Its very early and traditional 60's and 70's era stuff, Whereas P03's was futuristic 80's. He tries to make sure that it can be easily grasped for most however most 60-70's tech is just a mess no matter what. He made all his limbs wires that can extend and compress, Expand and slim. So yes he is tall and muscly but also no bro is bobot he aint got shit. This also applies to his hair that flows all the way down his back but he usually doesn't mess with it, In fact the wires there probably aren't even connected to anything he just thinks they look neat. apart from occasionally oh you know. Tearing people apart to try and 'give them a fair playing ground.' he's normal i swear you guys.

ON P0LRIOD/L3SH X phoe

Yes they are still divorced. The same reasons, L3sh is neglectful at times and Phoe can be an asshole. L3sh can be too logical as well and has a rule of 'If you can, So can I. If I can't, then you'll never.' Which can be really degrading sometimes. He would even consider himself better than Peo at times, If not barely an equal. Leshys capability mixed with P03's cockiness makes an occasional asshole. They probably got divorced bc of L3sh's murder experimentation problems and also going weeks on end ignoring Phoe. Bro just check on your husband please.

Unsure of how he makes cards yet, So heres a few options!

-He makes his cards by taking parts of you and tech-ifying you. Your mind isn't necessarily required, As long as he's got like an eyeball and a leg you're fucked. You get transferred once he's finished by 'rewiring and applyinh new hardware upgrades.'

-He still takes a picture, however. its a literal copier. like a fucking business copier but bigger. You know the ones, that are all chunky and shit and have like only 3 buttons and are barely hanging onto life. then you get sucked into the card. This one might be my favorite out of pure hilarity.

-He consumes you with those wires that act as his hair, And then meticulously rips out the most important/cherished parts of yourself out before turning into a card that exits out of his chest plate. This is the most personal out of the options here. and possibly sexual now that i think about it? Have fun dying i guess

martyn also is good at just going with the flow of things. he's good at fake confidence and therefore intimidation. he's good at threats (this clip comes to mind)

first, a review of the songs and then my overall thoughts!!

song review

Hall of Fame: from the get go, it establishes the space vibe with the opening tune! a great opening love the galileo and armstrong references etc, although the 'one small step' quote from armstrong, while it does fit the theme, kinda breaks up the song for me so it's not my favourite part. the build up in the prechorus is SO GOOD! the chorus is really punchy and i'm so in love with felix's little rap verse he really does make it iconic.

S-Class: so so so COOL!! the whistling part is so awesome and it starts with guns blazing with changbin's rap. HYUNJIN SLAYED THAT VERSE!! i really love it. all the raps are so good and the serpent road melody is so good?? THIS CHORUS IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!! the switch to a slower beat and the hip hop vibe was very unexpected but very welcome :) the buildup to the second chorus is so great omg i love how its the same but different! seungmin was really good in the we're special part ughhhh the dance break slayed so much as well i just have positive things to say about this song except maybe the ending i don't hate but also don't love how it ends

ITEM: GAMER ERA!! it's 'funnily annoying' just like they said in the intro video really does give video game vibes! super addictive and i love the diction as changbin focused on it really levels up the song. Super Bowl: omg. literally. i can see how it was meant to be the original gods menu but im glad they saved it for five star because it honestly just fits so much better with this album and it feels a lot more cohesive. ENGLISH SONG KINGS!! every line is just pure mastery ugh i'm so hooked onto this song and the way chan says ruULes like >>>> changbin's rap ughhhhh and then jeongin saying the everything you're craving its all me like TOAST?? DLC: THIS IS SO GREAT!! the instrumental is so nice, a lot lighter than the previous songs and a nice break from the heaviness hehe. the tune is so addictive and i love the SUNRISE part <3. even if the lyrics are a bit sad, as @oh-the-aster-blooms put it, 'sometimes when you are sad, dancing all night sounds better', and i totally agree :) everything just kinda flows so well and their voices work really well together. i really adore i.n's 'run away run away' part my baby has such an angelic voice. the bridge is also cool :)

GET LIT: idk is it just me but for some reason get lit just brings worth it by 5th harmony to mind with the jazzy vibes at the start, but like...better (no offence to 5th harmony) this is such a swag brag song! the raps are so great to start off omg and then the sudden transition to seungmin's beautiful voice ugh THE CHORUS!!!! i love how felix does his line and it drops into the vibe. the next verse is so like subtle brag idk how to explain it but the swerve swerve part> i do feel imo that the bridge is bit disconnected at the beginning but when changbin does his 'speaker' part it flows really well. i like the dance break! it is a bit repetitive but oh well it slays anyways.

Collision: i saw someone somewhere say it was like chill on steroids (idk who u are sorry for not giving credit 🙇‍♀️) and its so true. it really has the same vibe like sad but also like vibey idk i think the instruments help a lot with establishing that mood. vocalracha slayed in this >>> so did hyunjinnie and lee know <;3 babe i loved you that line is so good felix >>> and BANG CHAN IN THE VERSE AFTER THE FIRST CHORUS?? so good ugh its like a rainy day kinda song when u just feel a bit sentimental. also felix and...was it lee know? in the second pre chorus? that sounded so amazing ughhhh i really like that metaphor of crashing its very bittersweet <3 han slayed again

Youtiful: such a sweet song showing their love for stay! chan's explanation was so TT i love my boys so much the instrumental is so soft and soothing and the lyrics >>> listening to this just made my heart warm. its the audio version of chan's big hug <3 this was a very good song for chan. also seungmin, lee know and i.n as well!! i could listen to my babe jeongin saying 'you are a miracle' for ever. the chorus slaps.

i don't really count these two as part of the album as they were already released/just a translated ver so its a lot briefer

THE SOUND (Korean Ver.): the Japanese version slayed, so does this. i liked how they changed the chorus, and everything just fits well idk sometimes i find the translated versions a bit jarring after being used to the og one but this is really good!

sunny ive never disco elysiumed but i thought i was aware of the main concept, but there's a book? what's that all about!! im so curious i will one day play the game i promise ajfksh

oh rowan there IS a book but sadly it is held hostage by the thieving developer studio that robbed the original creators of their IP and so since the book takes place in the world of elysium it is sadly affected by that whole debacle. i think only a sad 1000 copies ever sold, but a digital version appeared mysteriously on the web at some point last (?) year, and now the fan translations are being birthed into the world :)

the book itself is called Sacred and Terrible Air, and it takes place about 20 years after the events of the game, and i have to be honest, if you haven’t played the game, it’s probably a bit difficult to understand what the hell is going on in this book because nothing is ever explained (in fact the name of the world “elysium” is only mentioned ONCE and like 200 pages into the book), but the main gist of it is that three childhood friends are investigating their former classmates’ disappearances 20 years after they went missing — and they seem to be the only ones interested in finding out what happened to the four sisters 20 years ago; in fact, they also seem to be the only ones remembering that the four girls even existed in the first place.

It’s a wiiiild ride, full of strange, flawed characters, sudden flashbacks and flashforwards in time, includes a weird world-eating fog (beloved), switches between seemingly random, unconnected POV’s and leaves you with more questions than answers after you’ve read it, but it was a genuine 5 star read to me!

the style of the novel is… i’d say it is quite different to the game and not nearly as humorous. disco elysium likes to poke fun at itself as a game and all the genres and tropes in it, whereas the book is dark and tense and pretty serious (you can find my content warnings on storygraph!).

i can absolutely recommend it tho, and you can find the group ibex translation here! (i made the cover :3c)

I had a what if idea, where pitch just is a hikikomori (a recluse) and it does partially fit in with his character (at least in my eyes) yes im throwing out like, almost all the canon here but this is my idea and i can bend it to my will! ( ^ω^ ) also i thought changing the word hikikomori to pikikomori would be funny, yk switching a letter. i think its cute! and thats also what i decided to name this au, i also think there are like not many altercations with other spirits and myths with Pitch. he might’ve been out there and moving in the past but now he just stays hidden completely from sight, once in a while you’ll get to see or year about him being out but i think its mainly just the bare minimum for his existential. i think that some spirits (probably North) would be worried for him, maybe once in a while a spirit might hang out but not much, maybe drop of food or smth?

i did do some questionable things in act 1 to please astarion but act 3 he loves me now (and so do karlach and wyll and basically everyone except jaheira lol)

i did get minsc and he's pretty funny. ive used him a few times but i dont like getting a new guy so late in the game tbh. he has a few fun interactions but like...i don't like how you have to save stuff for him and also basically your party is fleshed out at this point. at least w things like sea of stars, the last minute companion doesn't require tune ups until you level up whereas in bg3 you get a companion and you start w level 1 but like, whatever. also ngl his gear does suck. jaheira being the last companion does make sense ultimately and minsc feels more like an easter egg

talking about the hunger games and posing the "kill acquaintance that's in love with you or try to fake the game out with berries" question to my loved ones has caused me to realise that i did not in fact grow up lower-middle class like i had always believed, what i actually grew up in was just. the lowest class? which is kind of wild, i guess, because my family liked to talk like we weren't so poor, but now that im an adult i can realise that the average american family can afford $400/month rent and that the average american child doesnt go for days without access to food. and that like, the food they do have usually isn't solely canned vienna sausages, hot dogs, and plain ramen noodles, with the random cheap snack cake or chip thrown in as a filler. or, like, not getting toys often so that when you do get something, it's christmas and it's a nintendo so that you have something to occupy you besides the sticks and mud you play with, and it lasts to that effect for years because you get expensive things so infrequently that you take such good care of them, so you still have a fully working, very well kept fifteen year old DS Lite that you fairly frequently played Pokémon Black on right up until last year when you finally got a Switch Lite, but only once you had your decently paying job for well over six months and a roommate that cut your living expenses in half and were positive that you could afford it without cutting into how strictly you budget savings.

i uh, i got away from myself. i think the point is that my financial trauma makes a lot more sense now that ive realised we were not "averagely" poor and i didn't just happen to be profoundly influenced by something that everyone goes through, because they uh. they don't. so that's, something.

what happened in the new update??

so basically while i saw a few people say rhythm hive used to be integrated group-wise (i cant confirm/deny that, so i'm taking them at their word--i only started playing when svt was added), it went from being the four separate groups to being like... All Of Them together. no switching between groups (which imo wasnt even tht big of a hassle as someone who started playing for txt alongside svt a few months ago), they're just all together and also you can pull cards for literally All Groups now. so you could literally be playing for like... only bts, and pull an XR for enhypen, and so forth. like, i popped back in to check and there's no way to Only pull cards for a single group now--the card shop states you can only pull for all groups. if you're a multi fan, then i guess that part of the update isnt so bad, but i've seen So many people who only play for one group that don't want cards for other groups since they have no intention of playing those songs.

aside from that, they did a complete overhaul of how songs play. i'm not a game designer, so my knowledge is limited to just what i know as a person who, yknow, plays games, but i feel like the game doesn't give you any kind of time to react when you play? even when you slow down the rate that notes come at you, it feels like they speed up once they get to where you're supposed to hit them. it makes it kinda harder to hit them if ur like me and prefer the harder modes (like i stopped playing easy/normal within months of playing bc i like the challenge of hard mode + max speed). they've also implemented something i've seen in the superstar games where you only have so many notes you can miss before you fail. i think it works better in the superstar games because you don't play the full song in those, just short segments--whereas rhythm hive gives you the option to toggle between playing a full song or playing a short segment. having a health bar, essentially, basically makes it harder to learn a song all the way through. i used to play the chapters for svt before i hit roadblocks, but being able to play through the entire thing helped me get better and get through the harder chapters, y'know? having only so many hits makes it way more frustrating for someone trying to learn the song. games can be challenging, but they still have to be fun, yknow?

also ik it happened to other ppl but uh. i went from being like... level 50-something (maybe higher--im blanking) to being level 16 after the update. it was super jarring and im not sure if they explained why that is--i'd have to go looking.

UR cards don't rly mean shit anymore imo. i and a lot of other ppl on twt who play also expressed frustration that the scoring system seems way more confusing. ive accumulated a ton of cards over the past year to the point where i've hit all XRs for a couple themes in svt, and uh... i barely made an A rank on a song despite that and playing pretty decently throughout the song? like i didnt miss any notes and i still didn't rank that high when i finished the song. i've other ppl have questioned how you're supposed to score super high when they've got way better cards than me bc they've mixed theirs to get the better ones.

also minor thing because you can turn it off, but they did make it on by default that you hear this annoying sound whenever you hit notes in the game. took me back to when i used to play other games and while not awful, it's not what i rly enjoyed. you can turn that off tho, so minor points for that, and i'll admit that the UI is kinda pretty. i miss the old thing, but it doesn't look awful. cards def looked better in the old version tho, i miss how sparkly they were. they just feel kinda boring now.

tl;dr: you can't pull cards for a single group anymore, the scoring system makes sense + they ruined the gameplay by changing it up & adding a health bar system so you have limited misses before you have to restart entirely (or continue playing by paying gems, fuck that noise) + bad default noise that you Can turn off but why did they even put it in the game.

it doesn't feel like someone play tested it tbh like i'm sure Someone would have said "this feels bad to play" in some form. ive only seen a single person enjoy the update, and its purely bc they can trade in cards n whatnot. everyone else i've seen has been pissed to the point of either just saying "i'm done unless they revert it back" or calling other ppl to fully boycott it since its like... a major downgrade in quality.

(also ive seen ppl missing superstar bts and yknow what, cant blame em. superstar games are solid. i have my own gripes with certain aspects of them, but its exclusive to a single game out of the two i play haha)

quest for the 4* hp% sword: musings on kirara, nilou, bountiful cores

predicting ascension mats is a silly hobby but it is my favorite. i knew since she was a nekomata, that she'd probably have some connection to the other inazuma cats, so her mats would either be naku weed or amakumo fruit, as those are what grows on seirai island where asase shrine is. further more, so far only raiden uses amakumo fruit whereas both yoimiya and kuki use naku weed, therefore. amakumo fruit. and i was right!

ive just noticed how many hp scaling sword users there are (nilou, kuki, layla, fucking benny even, and now kirara) with no (non-5-star) hp% sword. at all. every other weapon type has some kind of option for their characters (though youre probably not gonna raise the recurve bow just for a couple extra points on diona's shield)

3.7 weapon is an EM bow which sounds great for tighnari, melt ganyu, and thats it.

the fontaine craftable weapons better include an hp% sword. this is getting ridiculous. hp is kinda hydros thing so it's not a stretch.

gonna give nilou 2p millelith/2p that new set for dehya. right now at level 79/80 (where shes going to stay until after i have kaveh raised) with 4p millelith hp/hp/hp/, shes at 42k. (with hydro resonance)

i dont know if the hydro her tranquility aura confers counts as a 'hit' for millelith, but it doesnt matter because the priority is squeezing as much out of her a4 as possible, which means hp hp hp hp. i have about 109% out of a possible 400%, and i dont think you can get that full 400 without key of khaj nisut. but. i'll get as close as i can. and then in 3 weeks i'll get kaveh and it'll be more.

EM barbara 700-ish because i havent quite finished getting the gilded that i'd had couched on razor for kaveh. we're doing about 24k bountiful cores. nahida doesnt actually work too well with nilou because you need to like. i think it works better if nilou and/or someone else is doing the wetting and the dendro side of the equation is the one making the reaction. they say kaveh doesnt apply enough dendro on his own to do it, but we'll see. theyre both better in multi-target, so, multiple auras.

shame theres no good way for crowd control with nilou. swirl preference means youre always picking up hydro anyway. i was hoping there would be more, like. dendro constructs, like how the samachurl has his little vine walls.

and it seems like. the team right now is nahida/nilou/barbara/[tignari or yaoyao]. barbara, currently being built entirely into EM, is not healing quite enough, so i gave my lvl 50 yaoyao her maidens for extra heals and extra offfield dendro. it has been working quite well.

so. when i get kaveh, the gilded that's on barbara will go to kaveh, and it will be kaveh/nilou/xingqiu/yaoyao??? i still havent decided on baizhu. kirara has thrown a huge wrench into my decision. express delivery big wrench. it will eventually be kirara in the fourth slot. if we cant keep up heals which between kavehs own healing and xingqius little bits, i might switch out for barbara. and then theres. well. kokomi. i need to figure out kokomis kit i never know what im doing with her when playing with trials and stuff. then theres ayato, and then fontaine will probably bring a few good hydro characters, including fucking focalors herself, so. who knows. there are possibilities. and if kokomi or ayato come up on a rerun before we know what wet goodies lie in wait in the land of steampunk courtroom drama.

3.7 apparently has a new yoimiya chapter so there's 1/4. it also seems to be inazuma centric, though, so. gulp.
