An alarm went off in Stan’s brain and he immediately jolted to action. SHIT! Shit! Shit Shit!

His little brother stood out in the hall, still in his pajamas.

God, he was a monster. A stupid SELFISH MONSTER, Stan lifted his fist try to wham it against his head, when a tiny hand grabbed a part of his arm.

“Lee?” His little brother’s big eyes, were staring up at him.

“I…Dad…Pa’s….” Stan struggled to come up with a lie, or even to explain. How could he?

What words would he be able to come up with that would be able to justify taking away their father?

“Is Pa dead?” Shermie’s quiet voice broke through Stan’s turmoil.

“Yeah.”

“He’s—he’s dead.”

Shermie sat down next to him, and leaned his head against Stan’s shoulder.

“You should take a bath. You smell.”

“Yeah…yeah. I-I should, shouldn’t I?”

“Are the police going to take you away? Are you going go away, like Ma and Ford?”

“I don’t know,” Stan honestly, didn’t know.

Should he try to cover up the crime? Run?

Shermie held Stan’s hand tightly, “Please, don’t leave me. I don’t care Pa’s dead. Please don’t leave me,”

Shermie’s voice sounded raw, terrified and desperate. Stan made his decision. His hand engulfed Shermie’s little one, but even when bloodied, he swore to use his hands to protect Shermie. Stan pulled his little brother in for a hug, and kissed Shermie’s forehead in a way that reminded him of Ma. It was an act, his father would scold Stan for.

Stan gently stood up, surveyed his surroundings.

“I’m going to clean myself, go to your room and start packing. Pa’s body has been reported dead yet, so we have a little bit before someone notices. I’ll…I’ll figure things out from there.”

That night Stan may have lost his innocence, maybe already lost it a long time ago or maybe he still had yet to lose it. But he promised himself, that he wouldn’t allow his brother to do the same.
