Will You Still?
“You fucking lied to me, Kara! For years, you looked me right in the eyes and betrayed me. You hurt me in ways no one ever has.” Lena screams, tears streaming down her face as the prominent vein on her forehead pulses in time with her shattered heart. “You’ve broken my heart into a million pieces. Worst of all, you and your little group of friends ruined any chance of me ever trusting another person again.” She pauses next to the pristine marble countertop in her kitchen, spinning the now mostly empty tumbler as she watches the last dregs of scotch dance at the bottom.
Stormy malachite eyes glare at the blonde Kryptonian standing across the island, the silence is claustrophobic and palpable. She scoffs as she picks up the glass and throws it at the woman she currently hates as much as she loves. Lena knows Kara’s reflexes are fast enough to catch the flying weapon before it impacts, she knows it won’t hurt the woman. Nothing happens. Kara just stands there letting it hit her in the face. The action briefly shocks her before she rolls her eyes and leans back against the counter behind her. A look of utter disgust and contempt on her face.
“Of course you just fucking stand there. For a superhero, you’re quite the spineless coward, Supergirl.” She spits the words at the woman with enough venom that it feels physical. Internally she smirks as she watches the blonde flinch when her words land. Just to twist the knife a little further, she leans forward, narrowing her eyes before saying, “You can leave the way you came in and don’t come back. I don’t want to see or hear from you again. Ever. You can disappear and I won’t fucking care. Fuck off, Kara.”
Kara’s head shoots up, her eyes filled with tears and remorse, her face draped in agony. There’s an anguish Lena has never seen before settling into the frame of the stoic woman. The despondent blonde opens and closes her mouth several times before her shoulders drop and she nods in reluctant acquiescence. “If that’s what you want, I’ll honor your wishes, Lena. I’m sorry for hurting you and for being a coward. You deserved so much better and I’ll spend the rest of my life regretting it.” She uses her super speed to quickly clean up the shattered glass and pauses at the balcony door, turning back for one final look at the one person who’s always been her home. “I hope you find the love you deserve, Lena.”
Without another word, she’s gone. Lena collapses onto the tile floor in her kitchen. Her sobs reverberate in the silence of her penthouse, punctuating how truly empty her world really is now. Her life is completely destroyed and her world turned upside down by four words spoken from her dying brother’s lips…‘Kara Danvers is Supergirl’.
Four words irrevocably changed her life forever.
“You should take a break. Go home and shower, get a few hours of sleep. Eat something. You know she’s not going anywhere.” The familiar voice breaks her out of the flashback. She has replayed the last words she spoke to Kara so many times now, replayed all the horrible and cruel things she can never take back. The regret she feels for everything is immeasurable and haunts her dreams whenever she does sleep. Her stomach churns and her guts twist as her eyes scan the unmoving blonde before settling on the concerned woman standing in the doorway.
Lena sighs. Her fingers massage the bridge of her nose and then the back of her shoulder before she responds. “I can’t, Alex. I don’t want her to be alone. She…I just…” Her voice cracks and she drops her head into her hands as she silently sobs. The guilt curdles in her stomach and what’s left of her heart swims up her throat. The horrible things she said can’t be the last things spoken between them. She won’t survive losing Kara regardless, but the fact Kara doesn’t know how she really feels or why their fallout broke her so badly? The fact the last thing she said to the alien was “fuck off” – the utter devastation on her best friend’s face afterward, there’s no coming back from that.
Alex pushes off the doorframe. She walks over to stand next to Lena’s chair and places what she hopes is a comforting hand on her shoulder. The dark haired genius has kept vigil beside the heroine’s comatose figure for ten days. Initially, Alex was unsure if she should contact Lena, but when Kara hadn’t woken up after three weeks and showed no signs of improvement, she knew she had to reach out. As much animosity as there is between them, she knows they both still care.
It’s been almost a year since their falling out, ten months almost to the day. Lex’s malicious identity reveal turned their whole world upside down. When Kara showed up at Alex’s apartment in hysterics after they spoke, she wasn’t sure what happened. After the hero calmed down a little, she told her Lena didn’t take things very well. It wasn’t shocking to Alex nor was it surprising when the youngest Luthor broke ties with everyone else in their group as well. Alex feels some responsibility for the state of things between her sister and the scientist. Especially since she also considered Lena a friend, but at the time, there was no getting through to the brilliant, yet stubborn woman.
Everything changed after their falling out, or as Alex often refers to it, their breakup. She’s known for a long time that Kara has feelings for the CEO, whether she admits it or not, it’s obvious to the agent. And, she suspects Lena feels the same way about her sister, but both are too chicken shit to do anything about it. Now she isn’t sure if either of them will ever get the chance and she’s sure it’s also on the young Luthor’s mind. Kara’s been unconscious with no improvements for a month now. At this point, they’ve tried everything she can think of to bring the alien back.
Alex clears her throat and squeezes Lena’s shoulder. “Come on, Lena. Take a break. You’ve been here for almost two weeks without leaving. Go home and shower, sleep. Please eat something.” Brown eyes scan the gaunt, pale features of her former friend. She looks even worse now than when she first showed up and that’s saying a lot. When Lena made her appearance at the DEO nearly two weeks ago, she was noticeably thinner with black circles under her eyes. Now, she looks ill. “I know you haven’t been sleeping or eating well. She’ll be pissed if she finds out you aren’t taking care of yourself.”
They both release a pitiful chuckle that sounds more like an emotional whimper than any semblance of laughter. Another wrenching sob fights its way out of Lena's chest before she can stop it. Her entire body quakes with the sheer force of it. Raw emotion propels her forward until her chest and head rest against the rail of the bed containing the embodiment of her heart.
“I c-can’t…l-ose h-her, A-Alex.” She sobs between barely comprehensible words. “Sh-she d-doesn’t…I n-need to f-fix it. P-please. K-Kara. P-please don’t leave me.” Breathless sobs turn into deep, retching wails of unexpressed grief that has built up over the past year.
“Hey. Shhh. She still loves you, Lena. She never stopped.” Alex says as she wraps her arms around her sobbing friend (ex-friend?). Stubborn tears sting the redhead’s eyes as she thinks about how much Kara still spoke about the CEO. “My sister never stopped talking about you and she still kept an eye on you to make sure you were safe, Lena.”
Her words seem to make things worse for the dark haired genius. Lena’s body wracks harder with heart-wrenching sobs and she practically collapses into Alex’s arms. The redhead just holds the smaller woman and rocks them both gently, unsure what else to do.
Although they were once pretty decent friends, she hasn’t seen or spoken to Lena in the ten months since her falling out with Kara and the rest of the superfriends. Sure, they’ve run into one another occasionally since they still frequent some of the same places, but Lena usually just glares and doesn’t acknowledge her. She’s a government agent and the patented Luthor glare even scares her a little.
The sobs finally subside, but Lena doesn’t make any move to extract herself from Alex’s embrace. The redhead continues to gently run small circles on Lena’s back, still unsure what to say. She wants to provide comfort and help the younger woman in any way she can, but knowing what to say in situations like this isn’t her forte. It’s Lena who finally breaks the silence.
“I’m so-sorry, Alex.” Lena stammers, barely audible. “I, um, d-didn’t…” She clears her throat in a desperate attempt to get rid of the lump that seems to be living there. “I apologize for my outburst. You have enough going on without me emotionally dumping on you.”
Alex barely restrains herself from rolling her eyes, but can’t keep the defeated sigh from escaping her lungs. “Lena, please don’t apologize. We’re friends, or at least we used to be. Either way, I care about you.” She runs her hand down her face exhaustedly. “Look, I know we have some shit to sort because of the identity reveal, but you’re one of us. Part of our little eclectic family. Don’t apologize for feeling, Lena. It’s what makes us human.”
Lena steps away from Alex and turns to look at the still unmoving blonde. “It’s funny, Kara is an alien yet she’s the most human of us all. I think she taught me more about being human in the years of our friendship than anything or anyone ever has.” She sniffles, wiping her face as her eyes trace the still features of the hero in front of her.
With a soft smile and light chuckle, Alex responds, “Yeah, she’s an alien, but has always had more humanity than anyone I know. Goddess knows, she’s saved my humanity more times than I can count.” A few tears escape her eyes before she pats Lena on the back and steps away.
“Come on. I’m taking you to dinner and then to your apartment for some sleep and a shower.” The redhead says before grabbing the CEO’s coat and purse. “No arguments, Luthor. I’m hungry and could use the company. Let’s go.”
Knowing any protest is futile, she relents. Leaning over the rail on the bed, she places a soft kiss on Kara’s cheek. “Please come back to me, Darling. I can’t lose you, not like this. The past ten months have been the worst of my life. Please, Kara. I won’t survive.”
The women pause at the door, eyes fixed on the eerily still superhero. Both of them take a deep breath before making their way down the hallway and into the parking garage. As much as Lena wants to be in that room with Kara, she knows Alex is right. She needs to eat and rest. A little sleep and a change of clothes then maybe she can get to work with Alex and figure out why Supergirl won’t wake up.
After the two women eat dinner, they talk through the things the DEO has already tried, going over what went wrong and other theories about what to do next. They end up spending almost two hours talking, it’s strictly about Kara and how to fix things. Lena has no desire to dive into the emotions and betrayal of what happened nearly a year ago. There will be time for that later, if she decides she wants to fix things.
It isn’t something she has given a lot of thought to before Alex called about Kara. Being thrust into this situation and into close proximity to one of the very people who lied to her for years wasn’t on her bingo card, but here she is. Lena’s life has never been easy or ordinary so she’s not sure why she expects anything different now. Life on hard mode is apparently the Luthor way. For smart folks, the Luthors sure make some really stupid choices.
Her thoughts are halted when something touches her. Apparently Alex reached across the table while she was lost in her head. The touch to her forearm jolts her back to the present and the conversation she is supposed to be party to. Evidently she missed something the agent said. “I’m sorry, Alex. What did you say?”
”I said I think we might need to revisit some of the things we’ve already tried. Now that you’re around, you may see something we missed. You have a better mind for this type of thing.” The redhead sighs, her now empty plate pushed to the side. “I’m really scared, Lena. You know I won’t give up until we get Kara back, but I’m genuinely scared. It’s never taken this long to wake her up from something. It’s killing me that we can’t figure this out.”
The look of utter devastation and terror on Alex’s face hits Lena hard. She’s never seen the stoic woman look so beaten down and childlike. It’s unnerving and makes her own fears start creeping up her spine again. “I’m scared too, Alex. I’ve been sick, physically ill since you called me. The last words I said to your sister were so cruel. Knowing how badly I hurt her with what I said, it’s killing me. She has to wake up, we have to get her back. She can’t leave, not like this. Especially not with what I said to her, Alex. She can’t.”
They both stare at the table between them. Each lost in their own thoughts on how to get the hero to wake up from the coma. She’s been like this for a little over a month now. The fact Alex is so scared increases her own worry tenfold. Alex Danvers has always been the last one to lose hope when it comes to her sister. Seeing her fear, this is new territory and Lena isn’t sure what to do or how to navigate it.
The silence drags on for a while, neither of them seeming to notice or want to break it. It isn’t until the server stops by their table to ask if they need anything else that either of them realize they were lost in their own heads again. The server politely looks at them awaiting an answer before Lena finally speaks.
“Oh, no thanks. We’re good. I believe we are ready for the check.” The CEO kindly smiles at the young man before he nods and walks away. “I definitely need sleep, I feel like I have spent more time inside my own head during dinner than in our actual conversation. Sorry about that.” They both laugh and shrug.
“No reason to apologize about it. Honestly, I’ve been doing the same. We’ve both been burning the candle at both ends. I think a little time away from the DEO is warranted.” Alex gives her a half-smile and a half-shrug. “My heart and soul need some time with Kelly, too. It feels like I’ve been neglecting her. She understands, she always does, but I think I need it.”
Lena nods, her mind drifting into memories of being at her apartment with Kara before shaking herself out of it and back to Alex. “For sure, spend some time with Kelly. We can regroup in a few days.”
The server reappears with their check, Lena signing the receipt before they both grab their things and go their separate ways. Alex heads home to Kelly and Lena back to her penthouse alone. Such as her life has been without Kara. Empty and alone.
Read the rest here. The first 6 chapters are up, the remaining chapters will be posted as I finish editing. Hope you enjoy!

Oh wait, I thought Aziraphale used an ancient Mac LOL. Oh. Oh no. It's so much worse haha! He would probably be using MacWrite as his word processor ... or Word Perfect lolsob
When Azi finally upgrades his computer it will be to like Windows 95 :).

There's something very weird about watching my daughter embark into adulthood. When she was a kid ... well, she was a kid. A different category from me. Now she's supposedly the same category. A peer. "Adult" supposedly applies to both of us. I mean, we're both well aware of the differences in experience and comfort levels in doing various (mostly boring) "adult" things, but our lives are more comparable than they were before.
I like to play this little game where I try to remember where I was when I was my daughter's current age. Right now that puts us somewhere around the end of 1984. I was not quite 20, living in Ann Arbor and working for the University of Michigan libraries, between the first and second times I dropped out. I was also learning about computers. I was making pretty graphs at work using a Lotus 1-2-3 competitor called Enable. I was helping people in the computing center recover damaged MacWrite files, because nobody working at the CC (as I later did) knew anything about those then-new Macintosh things. I was teaching myself programming on those same Macs, starting with assembly language because I couldn't afford a compiler. Might have created one of the world's first viruses, spread via floppy disks. Definitely did hack into the university's mainframe, which got my friend in trouble but I had luckily stepped out to get a soda at that exact moment. And I was getting my first experiences with online interaction, because as it turns out I was in one of the very best places for that.
I was also reading lots of fantasy and science fiction. I was between periods of playing D&D. I hadn't been on a real date yet. I supposedly knew how to drive, but the only time I did was to borrow my mother's car and visit her in the hospital 20-25 miles west, and I think that particular Christmas is one of the ones when she was there. I had just recently voted against Reagan for a second term. I also think this was just after I almost joined the Marines as an alternative to becoming homeless. I was still a few years from discovering and joining the local gay community. Neurodiversity was simply not on anyone's radar.
By contrast, daughter is now further along in her college studies than I ever got. I find it amusing that, after her first year at a school very similar to the one her mother attended, she's now at one very like the one I myself attended. She proudly identifies as genderfluid, bisexual, and AuDHD. Another contrast is that she not only has a boyfriend but they've been together for more than three years (since high school). She's very online and she's an avid gamer, but otherwise has no great interest in computers. Also, apparently like many in her generation, she hasn't even bothered to get a driver's license. No parents in the hospital either.
Yeah, a bit different. She's a very different person, of course, and her circumstances are also very different (sometimes even in ways I can take credit for). One of the things I like about these comparisons is being able to feel proud that yes, my child is far better off than I was. And isn't that what it's all about?

The System 0.97 Dilemma: a Mac anniversary special
(Originally on my Neocities on January 21, 2024)
Overview
As the anniversary of the original Macintosh approaches, I would tell a short story on how I found clean copies of the System 0.97 disk.
For the uninitiated, the original Macintosh 128K system shipped with
System 1.0, internally System 0.97, since the launch of the model in January 24 to May of 1984, when it was replaced by System 1.1.
The version is essentially a public beta (see Real Artists Ship on folklore.org), but it also became instrumental in the formation of the most important computer line in history (alongside the IBM PC compatible and descendants). While the difference between 1.0 and 1.1
are mostly bug fixes and performance improvements, the disk itself is an important document in the history of the Macintosh line.
Unfortunately, the disks available on the internet are modified, have custom fonts, and other little oddities. Early copies that spread online are unclean, i.e modified so bad that it doesn't resemble the original disk. Because of these, there are attempts on recreating the original experience, while others tried to improve them, but few actually searched for the clean dumps.
Usually, we would check existing archives such as the abundance of Apple Developer CDs, as well as the Legacy Recovery CDs, and few other sources. But lo and behold, the earliest dumps available are from System 1.1, and it's incorrectly labeled, alongside Systems 2.0 to 5.1/4.3. (Further details on this unusual naming scheme is found in earlymacintosh.org.)
I found out about this issue in the middle of November 2023, while reading issues for the Infinite Mac, and been
skeptical about it. I eventually found out this problem that no one, as in no one except a relative few tried to solved.
In this blog post, I would discuss how I did find it, and the
experience, as well as what happened after I found it.
The Modified Disk Problem
In the computers of the era, a hard drive was expensive, albeit large enough for their standards. But the consumer target computers of that particular era rely on different media to store data. Early microcomputer users (such as of Apple II, VIC-20, C64, among others) use audio cassettes to store data, while IBM PC users might be familiar with floppies (IBM PCjr actually does have a cassette drive, fun fact), and maybe a relative few use punch tape. In contrast of the 5.25" floppies that are common in that era, specifically 5.25" 360k disks for the IBM PC, the Macintosh uses a hard shell 3.5" 400k disks for storing data, which is one of it's defining features (a Twiggy disk drive was planned for the Mac, just like the Lisa before it, but due to reliability issues, it was later replaced with a Sony drive).
Early versions of the system use Macintosh File System (MFS), a non-hierarchical file system, that was designed for the 400k disks, which was eventually replaced by the Hierarchical File System (HFS) introduced in System 2.1 (HardDisk 20 Boot). The file system have some
weird quirks to it, such as how it handle folders, even if the design naturally doesn't allow it. One of the interesting things about it was it could write a disk once it opens, if the write-protect notch doesn't exist.
The System 0.97 disk is write-unprotected, which means a user could modify it and add new files such as MacWrite documents into the disk itself. While the properties didn't cause problems initially, the
decision hindered the preservation of those disks, as a user could also alter the whole system as a whole with a copy of ResEdit or with unusual personalization tools, which means modification of the disks. As I also
found out, it could also mean transferring things that aren't supposed in the clean disks (case in font (pun intended), Font Mover and Disk Copy.)
Spread
There are uncertain things about the initial spread of the now-infamous "Pastel font" disks that present System 0.97 with a pastel font, instead of the iconic Chicago font, but the earliest examples are the ones found
in The Mac 512 Usergroup and Gamba's software archive, with Gamba's being the source of modified disks in various sites such as Macintosh Garden, Macintosh Repository and WinWorldPC, among others. Quirks of the disks are that it could load the right font under a Macintosh Plus or an emulator like Mini vMac, and my hypothesis is that the ROM might have a copy of the default font set, or parts of it (as seen by the increased
ROM data capacity).
This spread later with YouTube videos, most using Mini vMac. While I don't see the problem if I looked into a normal viewer's perspective, it does feel off if you actually care about old operating systems. There's a part of me that tells me that these creators didn't do much digging, but in the end of the day, they worked hard enough with creating content, so I respect them.
What's more unfortunate is the fact that the modified copy is prevalent, and somehow still is… until in the middle of November 2023.
The Rabbit Hole
I initiated the search sometime in November 20, or later. I tried searching through Google, digging through old forum sites and popular retro Mac sites, which turned out to be a grueling process. I asked Discord servers, forum sites and Reddit if they have it but I neither have something useful nor have a better answer. And that's when it hit me. Why not make a list of the copies I found through the interwebs? In theory, that should help with the effort.
And then, that night of November 26, 2023, I started work on the gist of the same name,
documenting each copy that I have. During that time, I cataloged many copies from different sites, some copies from the same site. I spent some more time to test if the disks are bootable. Some aren't which I hypothesize the result of it being NDIF format Disk Copy images, as I looked retrospectively.
I also did try digging through shopping sites as well as bidding sites such as eBay but that turned out as not worth my time, as I live in the Philippines, and the conversion rates are high enough that I couldn't afford both the disk itself and the shipping cost. Another problem with this approach is that I don't have either an old Macintosh or a floppy disk drive that could handle 400k disks, or the necessary knowledge to image those disks, as well as where to store once done.
During the same time, I also emailed a few guys, such as ToastyTech (Nathan Lineback) and the webmaster of earlymacintosh.org. I'm initially shocked that the emails are still active. Nathan also told me that he doesn't have a copy but happy to upload it on WinWorldPC once I find it.
The webmaster of earlymacintosh.org however is where I finally found the end of the rabbit hole. It has been November 27 (the following day) when I sent that email, and he responded 2 days later. The disks are there, and to my surprise, it also includes the other disks in the 128K disk set.
Why a disk set? Well, the actual Macintosh 128K box and the models succeeding it actually contains other floppies: System Disk, Guided Tour Disk, MacWrite/MacPaint (bundled in a single floppy or separate) and Guided Tour of MacWrite/MacPaint. Later models omitted MacWrite, MacPaint and the Guided Tour disks as sufficient hard drive capacity became available to everyone, and the models improve performance, and the later transition to PowerPC. The four disks are instrumental to the later success of the Mac, specifically MacWrite and MacPaint.
When checking the disks, it is modified in January 18th, 1984, which is when the disks are printed in after the developers tirelessly pushed out the release (ref. Real Artists Ship), and also exactly 40 years before I
even written the blog post in ghostwriter (markdown editing program). A deep look into the files, it has modified dates between the 18th and the 24th, confirming that it's a clean dump.
As told in the Overview, which I further elaborate, Disk Copy is nowhere to be seen as that piece of application first appeared in System 1.1, initially to easily clone floppy disks, which later evolved into a program also capable of imaging the disks. Font Mover is also nowhere to be seen in the System disk but does appear under the MacWrite/MacPaint disk (disk 2). This is responsible in moving fonts to other systems, later adding the functionality to move disk accessories.
The information about the disk, as far as I was been told was it used to be owned by a developer, that doesn't need the disk. The copies that webmaster had is imaged sometime in January, 2004, but 2 of the disks are redump sometime in June 2018, which is hidden in his private collection of Mac System disk images, mainly from the fear of copyright strikes in his website by Apple themselves, just like the other retro Mac sites from back in the day, but due to my reasoning in the gist, he eventually made it online.
Now in the Interwebs!
It's December. I uploaded the disks after getting his approval on Macintosh Garden and the Internet Archive, some few days later. The disk later made it's way to WinWorld around the same time. I have to check Macintosh Repository if someone uploaded the updated disk sets there.
I only uploaded the System disk and MacWrite/MacPaint disks as the Guided Tour disks, albeit one of them have a never-before-seen betas of MacWrite and MacPaint, is not currently stable under the emulators I have tested, unless heavy modification is done.
On December 22, I filed an issue to Infinite Mac, mainly for adding DC42 support to the site's Mini vMac port. As I was currently in my dad's that time, I have some limitations to do stuff on my big bro's fancier setup (mine is a hand-me-down with new parts), I was testing the Mac stuff while dabbling into emulating a Nintendo Switch game, because I got a collection of old Macintosh disk images while in a bus trip. Since normal Mini vMac 128K can't run MacPaint 1.0 from the disk, DC42 was an easy fix. Then someone finds my research, and the images found their way into the website, both original and modified for Infinite Mac.
By then, I gradually stopped with messing with it as I slowly put Mac OS X into focus (at the time of writing, I'm tinkering with unmodified Tiger DVD booting into KVM via OpenCore and stuff) and more Mac OS X stuff.
The Experience
The actual experience of the operating system is purely just the desktop and the desk accessories. Sure it's revolutionary at the time, but the normal system disk is barren with applications as the disk space is quite limited. The Macintosh 128K's real potential comes down to it's killer applications. Just like how the Game Boy and Tetris is influential, the Macintosh and both MacWrite and MacPaint shows how the Macintosh can do much more than it's contemporaries, possibly even the Lisa before it, as it shows it's power in the desktop publishing industry.
MacWrite is what would you expect a basic word processor nowadays, but back then the program was much more advanced than the competition. Sure, it wasn't exactly the first "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" or WYSIWYG word processor software, but it was a hit among users of the system, as it could effortlessly combine text, pictures and other elements without much complexity to the end-user.
MacPaint is a drawing program, which has a lot of features, and one of the earliest programs to be made for Macs. It could draw things, and more, such as goofy ahh memes of the highest caliber, It also features some fancy (at that time) editing tools, such as the selection tool (Lasso), shape tools, as well as interesting tools such as FatPixels, and others. Later on, the UI style of the program was copied, including, interestingly enough, the Apple II Mouse Card, which is based on a much earlier build of MacPaint (folklore.org), among others.
The desk accessories are basic enough, and are coded cleverly that it could run in background even if there's applications opened, sort of an early attempt at multitasking. It's useful on getting things calculated or copy and pasting stuff from the clipboard desk application or changing the system a bit.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the disk images are finally properly preserved, in a state that everyone could enjoy it. This is a story on how an oftenly ignored issue now solved mainly as I learned much about how to gather stuff, as well as using the search engines to their limits.
I'm sorry if I'm not that often to write stuff, it is what it is. I don't care about the algorithm anymore, I care about doing what I think is the best of my work, and I like what I am doing, as well as the schedule also filled with other things to do such as in school.
Expect more content as well this year, this is only the start. I don't know which topic to do next but I hope I could churn out content much more filled with important stuff and fascinating things about tech, gaming and more.
In the blog post, we discussed how short my finding process is, which is unusually short than most lost or partially found media duration between that status to being found, but I'm still glad that I put a case into rest now, as a pristine copy of System 0.97 is found.
And as always, see you next time!
(also special shout-out to M.D.)

I was just thinking about this art and Carterhaugh-Wood Academy (Fae AU)! @bigmammallama5 did such a phenomenal job at capturing my story. It's the story I am most proud of and I am grateful Grace was along for the ride.

The main piece for my @supercorpbb contribution for @fyonahmacnally’s fic, Carterhaugh-Wood Academy (Fae AU)! I had a lot of fun creating this and the little plot-teaser sketches for each chapter!

So, I decided to make a little concept sketch of James and his little brother from my Illustrator Wally Darling AU
Idk how well Tumblr is going to have them turn out, but I decided I might as well post them! It's traditional pencil and paper, and just concepts, so idk how good it looks! Haha! I put it under a read more just in case people aren't interested.

^James MacWriter (he's 10)

^Johnny MacWriter (he's 9). I'm also still developing his character, which I tend to try to tie into their design, so it was just a light concept idea. (Hence it being not at detailed).

MacPaint (v1.5)
1984 :: Bill Atkinson & Susan Kare
MacPaint is a raster graphics editor developed by Apple Computer and released with the original Macintosh personal computer on January 24, 1984.MacPaint was notable because it could generate graphics that could be used by other applications. Using the mouse, and the clipboard and QuickDraw picture language, pictures could be cut from MacPaint and pasted into MacWrite documents.
This is an interactive example of early interactive/user experience design. It features the user experience and icon design work of Susan Kare. The demo is able to run in your browser, just press the power button on the Internet Archive page. The demo also features a barebones version of MacOS 4.1 with a functioning Control Panel and Notepad.

The Macintosh Plus computer is the third model in the Macintosh line, introduced on January 16, 1986, two years after the original Macintosh and a little more than a year after the Macintosh 512K, with a price tag of US$2599. As an evolutionary improvement over the 512K, it shipped with 1 MB of RAM standard, expandable to 4 MB, and an external SCSI peripheral bus, among smaller improvements. It originally had the same generally beige-colored case as the original Macintosh ("Pantone 453"), however in 1987, the case color was changed to the long-lived, warm gray "Platinum" color. It is the earliest Macintosh model able to run System 7 OS.
Bruce Webster of BYTE reported a rumor in December 1985: "Supposedly, Apple will be releasing a Big Mac by the time this column sees print: said Mac will reportedly come with 1 megabyte of RAM ... the new 128K-byte ROM ... and a double-sided (800K bytes) disk drive, all in the standard Mac box". Introduced as the Macintosh Plus, it was the first Macintosh model to include a SCSI port, which launched the popularity of external SCSI devices for Macs, including hard disks, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, printers, Zip Drives, and even monitors. The SCSI implementation of the Plus was engineered shortly before the initial SCSI spec was finalized and, as such, is not 100% SCSI-compliant. SCSI ports remained standard equipment for all Macs until the introduction of the iMac in 1998, which replaced most of Apple's "legacy ports" with USB.
The Macintosh Plus was the last classic Mac to have a phone cord-like port on the front of the unit for the keyboard, as well as the DE-9 connector for the mouse; models released after the Macintosh Plus would use ADB ports.
The Mac Plus was the first Apple computer to utilize user-upgradable SIMM memory modules instead of single DIP DRAM chips. Four SIMM slots were provided and the computer shipped with four 256K SIMMs, for 1MB total RAM. By replacing them with 1MB SIMMs, it was possible to have 4MB of RAM. (Although 30-pin SIMMs could support up to 16MB total RAM, the Mac Plus motherboard had only 22 address lines connected, for a 4MB maximum.)
It has what was then a new 3 1⁄2-inch double-sided 800 KB floppy drive, offering double the capacity of floppy disks from previous Macs, along with backward compatibility. The then-new drive is controlled by the same IWM chip as in previous models, implementing variable speed GCR. The drive was still completely incompatible with PC drives. The 800 KB drive has two read/write heads, enabling it to simultaneously use both sides of the floppy disk and thereby double storage capacity. Like the 400 KB drive before it, a companion Macintosh 800K External Drive was an available option. However, with the increased disk storage capacity combined with 2-4x the available RAM, the external drive was less of a necessity than it had been with the 128K and 512K.
The Mac Plus has 128 KB of ROM on the motherboard, which is double the amount of ROM in previous Macs; the ROMs included software to support SCSI, the then-new 800 KB floppy drive, and the Hierarchical File System (HFS), which uses a true directory structure on disks (as opposed to the earlier MFS, Macintosh File System in which all files were stored in a single directory, with one level of pseudo-folders overlaid on them). For programmers, the fourth Inside Macintosh volume details how to use HFS and the rest of the Mac Plus's new system software. The Plus still did not include provision for an internal hard drive and it would be over nine months before Apple would offer a SCSI drive replacement for the slow Hard Disk 20. It would be well over a year before Apple would offer the first internal hard disk drive in any Macintosh.
A compact Mac, the Plus has a 9-inch (23 cm) 512 × 342 pixel monochrome display with a resolution of 72 PPI, identical to that of previous Macintosh models. Unlike earlier Macs, the Mac Plus's keyboard includes a numeric keypad and directional arrow keys and, as with previous Macs, it has a one-button mouse and no fan, making it extremely quiet in operation. The lack of a cooling fan in the Mac Plus led to frequent problems with overheating and hardware malfunctions.
The applications MacPaint and MacWrite were bundled with the Mac Plus. After August 1987, HyperCard and MultiFinder were also bundled. Third-party software applications available included MacDraw, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Aldus PageMaker. Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint (originally by Forethought) were actually developed and released first for the Macintosh, and similarly Microsoft Word 1 for Macintosh was the first time a GUI version of that software was introduced on any personal computer platform. For a time, the exclusive availability of Excel and PageMaker on the Macintosh were noticeable drivers of sales for the platform.
The case design is essentially identical to the original Macintosh. It debuted in beige and was labeled Macintosh Plus on the front, but Macintosh Plus 1 MB on the back, to denote the 1 MB RAM configuration with which it shipped. In January 1987 it transitioned to Apple's long-lived platinum-gray color with the rest of the Apple product line, and the keyboard's keycaps changed from brown to gray. In January 1988, with reduced RAM prices, Apple began shipping 2- and 4- MB configurations and rebranded it simply as "Macintosh Plus." Among other design changes, it included the same trademarked inlaid Apple logo and recessed port icons as the Apple IIc and IIGS before it, but it essentially retained the original design.
An upgrade kit was offered for the earlier Macintosh 128K and Macintosh 512K/enhanced, which includes a new motherboard, floppy disk drive and rear case. The owner retained the front case, monitor and analog board. Because of this, there is no "Macintosh Plus" on the front of upgraded units, and the Apple logo is recessed and in the bottom left hand corner of the front case. However, the label on the back of the case reads "Macintosh Plus 1MB". The new extended Plus keyboard could also be purchased. Unfortunately, this upgrade cost almost as much as a new machine.
The Mac Plus itself can be upgraded further with the use of third-party accelerators. When these are clipped or soldered onto the 68000 processor, a 32 MHz 68030 processor can be used, and up to 16 MB RAM. This allows it to run Mac OS 7.6.1.
There is a program available called Mini vMac that can emulate a Mac Plus on a variety of platforms, including Unix, Windows, DOS, classic Mac OS, macOS, Pocket PC, iOS and even Nintendo DS.
Although the Macintosh Plus would become overshadowed by two new Macintoshes, the Macintosh SE and the Macintosh II in March 1987, it remained in production as a cheaper alternative until the introduction of the Macintosh Classic on October 15, 1990. This made the Macintosh Plus the longest-produced Macintosh ever, having been on sale unchanged for 1,734 days, until the 2nd generation Mac Pro, introduced on December 19, 2013, surpassed the record on September 18, 2018. (it would ultimately last for 2,182 days before being discontinued on December 10, 2019) It continued to be supported by versions of the classic Mac OS up to version 7.5.5, released in 1996. Additionally, during its period of general market relevance, it was heavily discounted like the 512K/512Ke before it and offered to the educational market badged as the "Macintosh Plus ED". Due to its popularity, long life and its introduction of many features that would become mainstays of the Macintosh platform for years, the Plus was a common "base model" for many software and hardware products.

What a pile of crap WordPress is! In all my years working with many different applications, I have never encountered such a badly designed monstrosity. In terms of user-friendliness, WordPress makes Microsoft Word look like MacWrite, and Adobe Photoshop look like MacPaint. (MacWrite and MacPaint were the first two applications for the Mac, released in January 1984.)

Thank you to @rainbow-rebellion for the amazing prompt!
“W-Wait…you’re going to Midvale this weekend? You’re spending the 4th of July in Midvale? With the Danvers? The same place I am going?” Lena asks, voice an octave higher than usual as her panicked green eyes dart between her computer screen, her cell phone, and the woman sitting in front of her. “K-Kara didn’t mention anything at lunch yesterday.”
Oh fuck! Lena thinks. This can’t be happening. Sam knows me too well. This is a disaster. Fuck! That’s it, I have to find an excuse not to go.
Sam’s hazel eyes scan her boss and longtime friend’s face with a smirk. “Well, that’s because she just asked today. I ran into her on the sidewalk on my way back from lunch with Andrea. She invited the two of us as well as Ruby, but Rubes is going to be with her friends all weekend. So, it’s just Drea and I.”
Shit, Andrea will be there as well. Goddammit, Kara. Drea knows me better than Sam! Gay panicking. You’re gay panicking. Okay, it’s fine. Everything is fine. You’re fine, Luthor. Get it together. You’ve hidden your pining for years. You can handle a weekend with your friends.
The brunette CFO raises a brow in question, an act picked up from the raven haired genius over their years of working together. It’s obvious the youngest Luthor is panicking over the presence of two of her oldest friends. No, she’s full on gay panicking. Sam does her best to stifle her laughter for Lena’s sake, but just barely. “Why are you being so twitchy about it, Luthor? Drea and I have been going to game nights since I moved back to National City. Besides, all of us already know you have the hots for blondie.”
The L-Corp CFO grins as she watches Lena’s posture shift from nervous to defensive. The entirety of their friend group knows Kara and Lena have been pining over each other for years. Sam is more than aware of the reason her friend is being squirmy about her and Andrea spending the weekend in Midvale. Lena knows she and Andrea know her better than the rest of their friends. The two of them know her every little tell and both of them live to give her shit about it.
Sam gives the youngest Luthor one final devilish smile before leaving her office. Lena knows she is absolutely fucked with the Arias and Rojas duo.
Lena does her best to put things out of her mind after her conversation with Sam. The first two days of her week fly by. It’s suddenly Wednesday, she’s finished her work for the day, and is currently standing in the middle of her walk-in closet trying to figure out what to pack for her four day weekend in Midvale.
The past few years with Kara around have provided a crash course in “comfy clothes” as the hero calls them. She has even accumulated a lot more casual clothing, but it doesn’t mean she has figured out how to pack for a holiday weekend, much less one held primarily outdoors. Honestly, she never really had holiday weekends while growing up with the Luthors. How the hell is she supposed to know these things?
She sighs and glances down at her watch, she should have been finished packing hours ago.
Kara will be at her penthouse any minute and she has exactly three things packed – her toiletries, her tablet, and her glasses. They are supposed to leave at 7:00 pm, which is exactly 45 minutes from now. There is absolutely no way she will have all of her shit done by Kara’s proposed departure time.
The Kryptonian wants to beat everyone to her childhood home to help Eliza set-up for all the guests. Lena pulled out all the stops and tried her best to get out of going after learning Sam and Andrea would be there, but the lovable reporter wielded her deadly pout and any further attempt died on her lips. So here she is, packing her suitcase. She was originally excited for the trip. It was supposed to be relaxing, but now she’s certain she will spend the entirety of the trip tense as a mouse in a room full of cats.
Lena sighs, again. She can already feel her anxiety climbing and shakes her head. Get yourself together, Luthor. Accept the fact you’re the mouse and will be tormented by two very devious cats. Fucking Sam and Andrea.
She gets lost in her thoughts. The next thing she knows, warm arms wrap around her waist causing her to shriek like a banshee. Once she calms down and wrangles her heart out of her throat, she smacks Kara for scaring the hell out of her quickly followed by shaking her now aching hand. They tag team her packing and get it done much faster than she would have alone. Unfortunately, she let her heart eyes cloud her judgment and allowed her years-long crush to take care of her swimwear for the weekend. There is no doubt in her mind she is going to regret this decision later as she has no idea what awaits her.
You are a fucking gay disaster, Luthor. Useless, pining queer disaster.
Unfortunately, Kara Danvers is her kryptonite. Lena Luthor cannot say no to that woman. It’s impossible.

Way back at the start of my computing career, or perhaps even before I could really say I had one, I "bought" access to University of Michigan computing facilities by being similarly useful. Technically I wasn't supposed to have such access, since I was no longer either a student or an employee. However, they had a bunch of these new "Mac" thingies and the computing-center consultants didn't know a thing about them (no training, naturally). I was pretty good at recovering students' MacWrite documents after something had gone wrong, so as long as they could send distraught students to me they turned a blind eye. I used this time to teach myself real-world programming on those same Macs.
Extra bonus story: one of the most common mishaps was a floppy disk placed on top of a magnet. Why would anyone do that? Because the unit of reservation was a Mac and an Imagewriter dot-matrix printer, packed into a very tight space. The only convenient horizontal surface was one corner of the Imagewriter ... right where a magnet happened to be lurking under the plastic. Derp.
I have become known at my library as the dude who knows how to deal with computers. I’m not in IT, and I don’t know shit about hardware, but I’m pretty good at figuring out what is causing an error, or how to perform a task in a specific program.
I have also joked repeatedly that all I really need to do is stand near one of the student computers in the library and it’ll start working again. I’ve no idea why, but for some reason errors that happen repeatedly just go away whenever I come to look at the computer.
Last week, I helped a student who was having issues with his laptop. Multiple programs had frozen, but he hadn’t saved his paper, and luckily I was able to get it working long enough for him to save three straight days of work that he otherwise would’ve lost. It’s worth noting that I spent most of the time I was trying to fix it whispering, “C’mon, baby, work with me” at his computer, because… just because, okay. It’s what I do, it works, don’t question it.
Anyway, I was around late at work last night, waiting for my ride, when the student worker came back to my office and said there was a small group of students looking for me, and could I give them a hand even though I was off the clock?
Sure, why not.
I came out to find a group of six students, including the guy I helped last week, at a table clustered around one laptop. I rolled up, said, “Hey, what can I help you with?”, and the guy said, “Can you just hang out here for a second?”
Sure, my dude. I’m off the clock, I’m listening to a podcast, I can chill at a table with your group until my ride shows up, if you want.
So I spend some time flipping through my phone, only half paying attention, figuring they’re finishing something up and they’ll ask their question as soon as they’re done. But after a minute, the guy says, “It worked!” and there was a chorus of excitement from the rest of the group. They all thanked me, and excused themselves to go back to class.
Turns out they had a group presentation, and the laptop they were trying to present from had froze up on them. Not knowing what to do, this guy apparently told his group there was a computer wizard in the library, and that merely being in my presence might be enough to fix it. To be fair, he… was not wrong.
I just find it delightful that this has become such A Thing that students are now seeking me out. Not to ask a question, or get some help, but just to stand near their device and share my mythical computer-fixing aura. It’s like being a terribly benign cryptid.

New Post has been published on https://hazirbilgi.com/what-is-word-what-does-it-do/
Word
What is Word? What does it do?
Word (Microsoft Word) is word processing software. It is one of the software in the ” MS Office ” package developed by Microsoft .
MS Word has the features to create, format and edit documents on your desktop and mobile devices. Word, a writing program, is the most used document software in the world.
There are different versions of Word developed for DOS , Mac Os and Windows . Each version series has experienced different development. The Word file extension is specified as “.doc” or “.docx”.
Word is part of Microsoft 365 (MS 365) licensed by Microsoft, offered in different packages as home, business, enterprise and education . Commercial editions can be purchased as a standalone and component of MS Office 365 with a subscription to MS Office 365 Preimum. There is also a limited version of Word as “ Word Viewer ” and “ Office Online ” provided by Microsoft .
It is word processing software that every computer user can use in the “viewer” or “formatter” functions of the Word application on their device. Therefore, it has widespread use.
Word history
Word was published by Microsoft in 1983. It was developed as a “Multi-Tool Word” project in 1981 by the team of Charles Simonyi and Richard Brodie. The first Word was developed for Xenix . It took the name “Microsoft Word” in a very short time after its first publication. In 1983, copies of the free edition were distributed by Microsoft on ” disc ” in addition to a magazine .
Word, unlike document software operating in the similar field, had the ability to control the mouse when it was first published. The “font” options were not available in the first version. However, the first version had “bold”, “italic” and “underlined text” features. There were also “undo” and “view” features.
In 1985, Microsoft released a version of Word for the Macintosh that could be used on the MacOS operating system. MacOS included MacWrite, its own word-spoken software developed by Apple . However, with the functional “WYSIWYG” features added to MS Word, it has become more functional compared to MacWrite.
For this reason, Word started to be used more in MacOS and even higher sales figures emerged compared to the MS-DOS version. This development paved the way for Word to gain new features. In 1986, he released Microsoft Word in an agreement with Atari , with the company’s version of “Microsoft Write” for Atari ST.
In 1987, the second version of Word was released to macOS. However, since Word 3.0 was released for MS-DOS at the same time, the version released for MacOs was named Word 3.0 for synchronization purposes.
Word 3.0 includes Microsoft’s “Rich Text Format (RTF)” specification and many more important features. Because there were too many bugs in the software, Microsoft distributed the bug-free version as 3.0.1 free of charge to customers who purchased 3.0. In the 1990s, the production/development of MacOS’ own software was discontinued and the market was left entirely to Word.
Microsoft first released a version of Word for its operating system, Windows, in 1989.
Windows Word versions
Microsoft first released the Windows version of Word in 1989. In 1993, version 6.0 of Word was released. This version featured a synchronized version for MacOS, Windows and DOS. At the same time, this version had the feature of being the last version of Word developed for DOS.
Word 6 version was released as MS Office component until the Windows 95 ( Win95 ) operating system. This version is also the 32-bit version. With Win95, Microsoft started naming Word with the year the version was released, instead of naming it with the version number.
The version of Word that offers the widest control is the Word 2007 version. In this version, the user interface called “ribbon” has been included in the software. The ribbon was used for the first time in Word among MS Office programs. Later, other MS Office programs were also added to “ Excel ”, “ PowerPoint ” and “ Acess ” software. Along with Windows 7 ( Win7 ), the ribbon started to be used in Paint and WordPad applications, which are other software .
In addition, dynamic upload features were brought to web design software such as WordPress , along with the ability to save in Adobe Acrobat and XPS files .
Mac Word versions
Just 1 year after the first Mac version was released in 1984, Microsoft released the special version of Word for Mac, Word 1.0. Word 3.0 (2.0 skipped for version synchronization with DOS) was released in 1987, Word 4.0 was released in 1990, and Word 5.1 was released in 1992. This version was the last custom version of Word developed for Mac.
With Microsoft Word 6.0 it has linked its versions on all platforms. Word 2001, released by Microsoft in 2000, had the last version feature compatible with the classic Mac OS version. On the new Mac OS X it could only be run in “Classic Environment”. That’s why Microsoft released a version of Word X in 2001, developing a version that runs natively on Mac OS X.
Word mobile versions
There is also a mobile version of Word, which allows creating, editing and formatting documents on mobile devices . It was released for Windows 10(Win10) mobile in 2015 .
Classic way in mobile versions;
font size
It has basic formatting capabilities such as changing the font color.
Mobile versions have limited features. In the mobile version of Word ;
Editing documents with tracked changes
Opening password protected documents
Font and style, text alignment
Footer and endnote, page header and footer, list indents and fonts (specific) display cannot perform their functions.
Word native file formats
Word files have their own file formats. Word file extensions are described as;
Classic/Old Word Document “.doc”
Classic Old Word Template “.dot”
Classic/Legacy Word Document Backup “.wbk”
XML Word Document “.docx”
XML Word Macro Open Document “.docm”
XML Word Template “dotx”,
XML Word Macro Open Document “.dotm”
XML Word Binary Document “.docb”
What does Microsoft Word do?
All writing operations can be done on PC, Mac or mobile device with Microsoft Word software and can be enriched/customized with functional factors. In Word software;
Creating a document/template from scratch,
Adding text (text), visual (image, picture, video) to the document,
Saving, storing and sharing the document,
editing and formatting,
Encrypting the document
Accessing the document on different platforms (computer, tablet and phone) with OneDrive connection,
Word versions
The versions of Microsoft Word developed for all platforms are different from each other. Different version development processes have been processed. Therefore, version developments are handled differently according to platforms.

Why You Need a Mac Computer
Okay, so I'm a touch biased. Okay, maybe loads biased. I've been a Mac person on account that buying my first "Fat Mac"(512K) in 1984. I was awed and surprised at the 2 applications that got here with the small gray container showing a nine inch display; MacWrite and MacPaint. I should type and draw in dwelling black and white and print on my trusty dot matrix printer. Over the next few years, I might slowly upgrade as the brand new models advanced.
Today, I nonetheless use a G4 iMac as my important computer, although my wife makes use of a pc PC as our backup. She's a Windows rebel, I've afraid. So not all and sundry's best. But we still get alongside extraordinary and I can work her pc and perform a little basic troubleshooting. But I've noticed that it is challenge to a variety of "glitches," I've been able to keep away from on my Mac.
Most appear to stem from software problems because of incompatibility or thriller illnesses. Whenever the next first-rate Windows Operating machine is mounted, there is a getting to know curve. Yet, as I've upgraded my Mac OS from 7.Zero to 8.6 to ten and now into the "Wild Cat" collection (i.E. Panther, Tiger) I even have enormously few bugs. Sure, there are problems, but not anything main. For the most component, my Mac runs easily. Are there downsides to being a Mac user? You guess. Here are the plain:
The machine seems to price extra than comparable PC's
There are much less outlets for purchase and picks of machines
There are much less peripherals and printers which can be Mac-like minded available
There are much less software program-compatible packages, inclusive of games
Until now, it could not run a Windows formatted discs or software. Not anymore.
I get positioned down for my beliefs
The remaining one needs an evidence. I turned into running on a brand new web page with an internet developer and he couldn't get a section to work for a Safari browser on a Mac. I stated I wanted it to function and he stated I changed into being stupid. Why waste time designing a website to work on Safari when most effective 3.19% of all on line users had a Mac? I informed him that of the 170 million US on line households, that could be five.Five million people I could not reach. He stated that could be proper and I have to forget about than totally. They were not vital. Really?
So right here are some downsides to the PC and Mac upsides:
There are a ways more viruses to fear about.
There are greater software problems.
The Mac interface is less difficult to apply.
The New Intel-Based Macs run Windows
The support group at Mac is advanced, in line with each client record
The newer Macs are a lot better looking and manner cool in design and characteristic
Mac's aid iPods
The Mac TV classified ads rock.
By the way, I nevertheless can run MS Office and maximum different MS applications on my Mac. Did I point out all the biggest design companies and animation studios use Macs? Ever heard of Pixar or Disney? Our organisation used Macs for it is advertising production and many college systems completely use Mac's due to the fact they are intuitive and smooth to educate to standard students. There are other advantages too severa to list. If you're a Mac consumer already, you apprehend. If now not, too awful, you may by no means realize the amusing of being a MUGM or Mac User Group Member.
I understand it's tough to persuade and convert Window customers. I should know, because I have tried during the last two many years. So I'll maintain to experience my Mac international and surprise why anyone would maintain to apply a PC.

Within a few months, Word 3.0 was superseded by a more stable Word 3.01, which was mailed free to all registered users of 3.0. Word 3.0 included numerous internal enhancements and new features, including the first implementation of the Rich Text Format (RTF) specification, but was plagued with bugs. The second release of Word for Mac OS, shipped in 1987, was named Word 3.0 to synchronize its version number with Word for DOS this was Microsoft's first attempt to synchronize version numbers across platforms. After its release, Word for Mac OS's sales were higher than its MS-DOS counterpart for at least four years. It fulfilled a need for a word processor that was more capable than MacWrite. įollowing the precedents of LisaWrite and MacWrite, Word for Mac OS added true WYSIWYG features. It was also notable for its very fast cut-and-paste function and unlimited number of undo operations, which are due to its usage of the piece table data structure. This was made easier by Word for DOS having been designed for use with high-resolution displays and laser printers, even though none were yet available to the general public.

In 1985, Microsoft ported Word to the classic Mac OS (known as Macintosh System Software at the time). However, Microsoft steadily improved the product, releasing versions 2.0 through 5.0 over the next six years. It was not initially popular, since its user interface was different from the leading word processor at the time, WordStar. Advertisements depicted the Microsoft Mouse and described Word as a WYSIWYG, windowed word processor with the ability to undo and display bold, italic, and underlined text, although it could not render fonts. Unlike most MS-DOS programs at the time, Microsoft Word was designed to be used with a mouse. That year Microsoft demonstrated Word running on Windows.

Free demonstration copies of the application were bundled with the November 1983 issue of PC World, making it the first to be distributed on-disk with a magazine. Its name was soon simplified to Microsoft Word. Microsoft announced Multi-Tool Word for Xenix and MS-DOS in 1983. Simonyi started work on a word processor called Multi-Tool Word and soon hired Richard Brodie, a former Xerox intern, who became the primary software engineer. In 1981, Microsoft hired Charles Simonyi, the primary developer of Bravo, the first GUI word processor, which was developed at Xerox PARC.
