Summary: The fact was simple: Wu Xie, the antique shop owner, had been a good friend of Shen Wei for a while - how it had happened was a long and ridiculous story, which Zhao Yunlan had heard five times and had stopped trying to understand, - and he was one of the few people who had always known that Shen Wei was Dixingren. And it was Wu Xie who Shen Wei had chosen to ask for help in his severe case of inability to confess his love - even if that love was something ridiculously explicit at that point.

When he gets called into Chengguang Mansion to pick up Fei Du on his request, Luo Wenzhou has no idea what to expect. He now knows better than to walk in with expectations where Fei Du is concerned. However, this time Luo Wenzhou finds himself in deeper water, because apparently, nothing is what it seems.

Guardian, Weilan, Ye Zun X Kunlun, post canon fix it fic, Ye Old Haixing, dark, angst with a happy ending, time travel. (Yeah I'm reccing my fic lol). Summary: Zhao Yunlan is brought back to life. Then he is brought back in time 10,000 years, to a version of the past that is different from the one he experienced the first time. And Shen Wei is alive and okay, but it’s not clear if that means everything Zhao Yunlan hopes it does. Also, Ye Zun is there. And Kunlun never died.

Or: Shen Wei and Ye Zun did end up okay, together, after they died, after Shen Wei promised to be with Zhao Yunlan again. This is the story of them all finding their way to that better ending.

Notes: Day 4 of @analogicalweek 2022! This is for the prompt “AU.” Takes place early in the first year of analogical’s marriage. also i don’t know anything about star trek so i apologize for inaccuracies lol

“God, I used to read so much Star Trek fanfiction as a teen,” Virgil said reminiscently, tipping his head back against the couch and reaching for another handful of popcorn.

“Really?” Logan said from his seat beside his husband on the couch, curious. “I wouldn’t have imagined you’d have been particularly into the show.”

“Oh, I mean, it was never my top fandom, but it was always kind of there, you know?” Virgil shrugged. “My mom really liked it, so she introduced it to me. I guess it was kind of a comfort fandom when I got older. Nostalgic, or whatever.”

“Ah,” Logan said. “I see. I discovered it in middle school.” He tilted his head to the side. “Oh, I think it must have been a special interest for a few years there.” He’d never made the connection before; it had been close to a year since he’d found out he was autistic, and little things about his life kept clicking into place every so often in light of this information. Star Trek evidently being a case in point.

“That does not surprise me even a little bit,” Virgil informed him fondly. “Nerd.”

Logan rolled his eyes. “Shut up,” he said, smiling.

“Make me,” Virgil teased.

Logan picked up a handful of popcorn and shoved it into his husband’s mouth, which sent them both into giggles, Virgil covering his mouth with his hand to avoid spewing popcorn all over the living room.

“Okay, I guess I should have seen that coming,” Virgil commented after a moment, swallowing the popcorn at last.

“Probably,” Logan agreed. “I like that you describe the show as comforting. That’s how I feel about it now, too.” His interest hadn’t been as strong in a few years, but it was still there, just softened down to a warm glowing core deep inside him.

“Yeah. I’d always search up the Spirk tag on AO3 when I was feeling down.” Virgil rolled his eyes. “Which, y’know, teen angst me did kind of a lot.”

Logan frowned, putting a hand on his husband’s arm.

“I’m okay, L.” Virgil took the hand and raised it to his lips. “Don’t worry.”

“I don’t like it when you are unhappy,” Logan said, still frowning.

“I know, babe.” Virgil cast him a comforting look. “I’m plenty happy now, okay? This is a great way to spend the evening. I’m good.”

“Okay,” Logan acquiesced after a moment, doing his best to wipe the frown off his face. “What kinds of fanfiction did you like to read?”

“About Star Trek?” Virgil asked. When Logan confirmed with a nod, his husband went on, “Well, I said Spirk already. Mostly that. Or else platonic stuff.” He grabbed the remote and paused the TV. “Sometimes I’d branch out into Daforge, if I wanted to spice things up with the Next Generation stuff, or a couple other things depending on what I was feeling. I went for lots of whump and hurt, with or without comfort. It was, like, cathartic, or whatever. But there was this one author I liked who did, like, more long-form, plot-heavy stuff. Which is the kind of stuff I usually would avoid, but I got into their stuff anyway because I read a oneshot they did once that was fantastic—Spock had to kill Kirk for some reason, I fucking cried, I loved it—and it got me to take a chance on their other stuff, and it was really good. Like, published novel levels of good. They were one of my favorites, even though most of their stuff wasn’t the kind of fic I usually read.”

“Fascinating,” Logan commented. “You’ll have to show me.”

“First of all, the fact you assume I still have all my old cringey fanfic accounts? Ouch.” Virgil seemed amused. “But accurate. Second, the assumption that I still remember enough details years later to find that fic?” He paused. “I mean, okay, again probably accurate. But come on. Leave me some shred of dignity, L.”

“I was not mocking you,” Logan protested.

“Oh, I know, babe. But it’s still funny.” Virgil took another handful of popcorn and munched it, considering. “Actually, I bet you would like their stuff,” he said thoughtfully. “It seems exactly up your alley, now that I think about it. There was this one really awesome long-ass multichapter piece they had, it was a college AU but it also had, like, a murder mystery going on that Kirk and Spock teamed up to solve, and there was this whole rivals-to-begrudging-allies-to-friends-to-lovers thing. All of it was super well researched, too, I think the author actually said they’d based it off some old crime case they learned about.”

Logan blinked several times and worked very hard on controlling his facial expression. “…Really?”

He must not have done as good a job at acting natural as he’d hoped, because Virgil squinted at him. “Uh, yeah. You good?”

“Fine,” Logan said quickly. “Just—uh—fascinated by the premise. Do you remember anything else about it?”

“I dunno. The smut chapters were really hot,” Virgil said, shrugging.

Logan choked on air. “Ah,” he said faintly. “Yes. Those. I see.”

Virgil snickered. “And those were also, like, excruciatingly well-researched. The author always linked a bunch of sources in the notes for the chapters, and had a whole long rant one time about safe sex in real life. It was weirdly wholesome, actually.”

“That’s—that’s great,” Logan managed.

Virgil paused, eyeing him sharply. “Babe, you’re acting really weird,” he said, frowning. “What’s up?”

“I—” Logan hesitated, reluctant to answer. “What was the author’s username? Do you remember? By any chance?”

“Uhh.” Virgil frowned, concentrating. “It was some kind of pun, I know that. A dirty one.” He snickered. “And a reference. It was clever.”

“Oh,” Logan said, his voice cracking. “Well. That’s—I see.”

“Hang on.” Virgil looked at him sharply. “Do you, like, know the fic I’m talking about?” He looked delighted. “You read fic when you were a teen?”

“I—well, in a manner of speaking, yes,” Logan hedged, his face burning hot all the way to the tips of his ears. He avoided his husband’s eyes.

There was another pause. Then a gasp. “Logan, you’re not saying you wrote it, are you?”

Logan hid his face in his hands. “Maybe?”

Virgil made a wordless noise of gleeful delight. “Holy shit,” he breathed. “Uh—shit, what was it called—the fic was, uh—oh, I’ve got it.” He snapped his fingers. “It was called Journey to Scarlet. I think it was a reference to a couple different things.”

Logan groaned. “Oh god. Yes.” He hiked his legs up onto the couch so he could curl into a ball. “I have so many regrets right now.”

“That was you?” Virgil pressed, delighted.

“Yes,” Logan admitted, muffled, into his crossed arms.

“Holy shit, this is like a fake tumblr post come true,” Virgil said, laughing uncontrollably. “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I fucking married my favorite fanfic author. This is the best day of my life.”

“I’m going to look up my login and delete it all,” Logan said into his arms, only half meaning it.

“Noo!” Virgil protested, laying a hand on his arm. “No, babe, it was really good, I swear. I bet it still gets hits, even.” He tugged at Logan, guiding him to curl up in Virgil’s arms and lay his head on his husband’s shoulder. “I’m not making fun of you. Promise. I really do think this is awesome and hilarious and great.”

“I never told anyone about my account on that site,” Logan mumbled into his neck. “I’d always delete my search history after going on it.”

“Aww.” Virgil pressed a kiss to his forehead. “I promise whatever embarrassed you about it, I did way worse shit than you did and read things much more eye-bleachingly shameful than you did. I fucking guarantee it. And I linked my profile on all my regular social media.”

“You what?” Logan gasped, startled out of his embarrassment in spite of himself.

“Yeah. I did lots of deeply cringey things that I regret letting people witness, with everything in me,” Virgil said, snickering. “But, like, it’s kind of funny now, I guess.” He pressed a kiss to Logan’s forehead. “I’m not judging you, hon. Promise.”

Logan made a face, though he did not doubt the veracity of his husband’s words. “Okay,” he agreed, tipping his face forward to hide in Virgil’s neck once again.

“Shh. There, there.” Virgil patted his head. “Poor thing,” he teased gently. “You wrote very good stories with very hot smut, oh no, however will you recover?” He sounded intensely amused by this entire situation.

“I wasn’t planning on anyone finding out about them!” Logan said with a somewhat pitiful whimper.

“Okay, babe,” Virgil soothed. “I won’t tell Remus. Promise.”

“Oh, god.” Logan shuddered at the thought. “Thank you.”

He could still hear a note of amusement in his husband’s voice. “Of course, babe.” Virgil lifted Logan’s face and pressed another kiss to his forehead. “Want to watch some more actual Star Trek until you feel better?” He gestured towards the TV, still paused midway through the episode they’d been on.

“Can you still hold me?” Logan asked in a small voice.

Virgil grinned, petting his hair. “Definitely.”

Logan relaxed somewhat, rearranging himself so he could lean on his husband and rest his head over Virgil’s heart. Virgil’s arms came up to cup firmly around him, fingers running through his hair and scratching his scalp as the episode began playing once again.

Logan had to admit, beginning to feel warm and safe and sleepy, that this was not a particularly terrible outcome to this situation.

The makers of AOS were determined to mess up Spock's character making him straight, completely ignoring the way he was created by Roddenberry, who said about Kirk and Spock's relationship (comparing them to Alexander and Hefestion's): "Yes, there's certainly some of that, certainly with love overtones. Deep love. The only difference being, the Greek ideal... we never suggested in the series... physical love between the two. But it's the... we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century." (c) Regardless of that, looks like the modern creators of Star Trek SNW are about to ignore that once again. But for it being a difficult task (because, let's face it: in spite of AOS makers' efforts, they failed to split Kirk and Spock, and the characters were still drawn tremendously to each other, simply due to the natural dynamics that exists in their relationship, because their characters complement each other ideally.), the makers of SNW "learned" from the mistakes of their predecessors in a worst possible way and went further in their war with Spock. They realized one thing that thousands of spirk fans realized decades ago: if there's Kirk and Spock both present at the same time, there will be Spirk: this situation is unavoidable. So! They decided: to avoid spirk, we have to simply... keep only one character on screen! In this case - Spock. Kirk is out of the picture. And no Kirk - no spirk! Oh, "the geniuses!" "In your faces: Roddenberry and other followers of ideas of progress and diversity in the Universe!"

P.S.: I really hope, that I am wrong in my suspicion about Spock being straight in SNW. But seeing the characters list doesn't fill me with confidence(.

P.P.S.: I am a firm believer, that women have to be widely represented (and not like in AOS, where they left only ONE from the original crew), I am happy, that finally(!) Uhura, Chapel and Number One are there: together (woo-hoo!). Roddenberry always payed a special attention to the percentage to the female characters involved. It is a part of Star Trek progressive philosophy: it is about keeping an open mind to new ways of thinking, embracing the diversity and fighting prejudices and stereotypes, like, for example, gender stereotypes and heteronormativity.

Below are some of my favorite fanfics of all times. Most of them would probably be from AO3 (Archive of Our Own ) but sometimes I scout for fics outside of AO3 as well, if I find something worth reading I would put it here too.

I do read fanfics from multiple fandoms but I would make sure to include a tag so that you can know if there is any fic about your OTP in my list.

❤️Spirk (Star Trek: Spock x Jim Kirk): my favorite pairing of all times, though I prefer the AOS version to the TOS. I have read these fanfics so long ago that I can’t remember the content (so I apologize for the lack of my own comment/review) but if I bookmarked them they must have been good enough lol

Once Upon a Time (A Fairy-Tale Love Story) (by littlebirdtold): 47,461 words/6 chapters

Summary: In a universe with no Federation, where First COntact never happened, Jim Kirk is your average popular guy. On Christmas Eve, thanks to a series of strange events, Jim finds himself in a parallel universe where the Milky Way is under the control of an alien race and ends up as a servant in the residence of the Royal House of Vulcan. As he starts adapting to his new life, Jim’s curiosity fucks everything up - but hey, Vulcans shouldn’t have told him that he isn’t allowed to enter this wing of the palace; Jim has never been good at following rules. Or, this is the story of how Jim Kirk became a Princess (“Prince Consort, Bones!”) of the United Planets of Vulcan Kingdom.

Honestly, go read every single one of littlebirdtold’s fanfics. He/she/they are incredible and I’m still waiting for his/her/their comeback.

What made you ship it?

Covid lockdown inspired my first official watch through of the franchise, so TOS was first up. I had been involved in previous fandoms before and couldn’t help but dig into fanfic. Watching Kirk and Spock as presented in that show had me like, “hmmm, seems a little fruity,” and the internet did not disappoint. I discovered The Premise and bought a stupid domain name because I liked it so much… (@thyla-dot-gay in case you’re curious)

What are your favorite things about the ship?

The fondness. The lingered touches. Captain Heart Eyes and his adventures with Mr. Oh God I Feel Emotions in Space over DECADES is just 🥰. Toss in some canonical marriage by Vulcan sand fighting and you can see why this ship is a true OTP.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I started watching AOS with full on ✨Space Husbands✨ expectations and was not disappointed by either canon and fan content. After further research and consideration, I may have slightly jumped ships though. Spirk is solidly my fav for TOS, but McKirk AOS is just too good. I personally think the reboot started as McKirk, we got that Spirk fix in Into Darkness, and then there was so much Spones in Beyond that I no longer skip the tag in either AOS or TOS. Both are clearly building to endgame McSpirk, but for different reasons. So now we’re embracing ✨Universal Constants✨in all it’s many pairings and groupings. IDIC = 🖖🏼 & ❤️💛💙

I have something to say about Spock's orientation (and headcanons, I guess, because we are still waiting on Strange New Worlds).

I see that many people say that Spock is gay. Why? Don't get me wrong, Spirk is definitely canon, they love each other and are space husbands, there could be no arguing about that.

But it is canon that Spock was attracted to women. Yes, in one case he was high on pollen, in the other he turned into a Vulcan caveman, and we can debate the fascination of Star Trek creators with dubious consent some other time (I think we should btw!). But that pollen in 'This Side of Paradise' was not an afrodisiac, it just took away Spock's 'logical' inhibitions, pretty much the same way as in the episode 'All of Our Yesterdays'.

So, tell me, why must Spock be gay? To me canonic Spock sounds pretty bisexual. (Or maybe pansexual, I guess, as we are dealing with aliens).

I admit, may be, I am just biased, being bisexual myself and subconsciously (and consciously, too) I want to see bisexual representation. May be because it just feels biphobic when someone says that if Spock loved Kirk as his t'hy'la (which he definitely did), he must be gay. Just like Philippa said, don't be so binary!

Moreover, was I the only one who noticed some tension between Una and Spock in Q&A?

I already have this SNW headcanon due to Q&A that Spock was enamored/impressed by Una when he met her to the point that he started copying her personality traits (like being aloof and not showing your crazy). This would explain the in-universe difference between Spock's portrayal in The Cage and later in TOS.

Anyway, my point is that if we respect canon, it's obvious that Spock was not straight and that he was not gay either. He doesn't have to be gay to undoubtedly make Spirk canon on screen in Strange New Worlds.

I am ready for debate!

i'll ride into battle and die on this hill with you cause i don't have time for cowardice. i thouroughly despise AUs unless they stay true to the gritty vibe of the spn universe. example: fbi au? fine. just make dean a hunter and have cas be on his case or whatever. if they're not getting their hands dirty, the au's not for me. the second you take the supernatural out of supernatural you lose me. star trek aus are my only exeption to this because destiel can and will come for spirks gig

yeah, for other fandoms slice of life aus may work but spn characters are just so deeply unwell and enmeshed in their narrative that you really need to keep them in their world to accurately portray and study their characters. i was saying to mary last night that you don’t get dean if he doesn’t watch john kill a man in front of him at five years old and you can’t get that if john is like an accountant or a coffee shop owner who employs his sons for free labor. and again it’s fine if people just want to read something lighthearted but i personally want to get into the characters’ heads and read them as they navigate their world

;-; <3 yes when I can. I love comments and I want to respond to them all, but sometimes I don’t get to them for months and then I’m like ‘may I still respond? I took so long ;-;’ I love that people read something and had feelings and want to thank them for reading.

5. What’s the fic you have written with the angstiest ending?

Perhaps Maybe Not Anywhere? I don’t consider it angsty but as a standalone it basically is. It’s a story about if Kirk and Spock in aos timeline got together pre-movie, then obviously didn’t work out because they aren’t ready in their character growth yet, and so they split. But I mean I wrote it to fit with movie canon so you can interpret it as they still grow together through the movies and end up together a la spirk in any universe. It’s just in that particular fic quite rough ToT. It’s also more of a character study, so it’s more resolution for character’s inner worlds than their relationships.

fuck I forgot! Or ‘seen this coming’ which is Gongsun Qian from Men With Sword reflecting on his own death, that’s hella angsty. Or ‘i love you’ which is set in Theory of Love and is Khai’s pov before he shapes up, so its in line with canon angst of that point in the story (but again according to canon things improve and they get together later post-my-story so??). Or ‘in another version’ which is quite sad as its Lan Xichen grieving, but in a way I wrote a much happier sequel ‘over the moon’ (I also wrote a happier sequel to the angst-ridden jiang cheng fic) so I don’t think they’re contenders. I try to make it so if I write something sad its only as sad as canon? And usually has an implied happier ending later or else I’ll probably write a sequel later.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Maybe Exit_Success because its a happy ending post-canon story for POI where everyone lives? Which I personally find consoling lol ToT.

just a ribbon is fairly happy ending, maybe that’s part of why it’s the most kudos lol? over the moon i find incredibly hopeful - reincarnated, everyone’s happier and optimistic and just nice and good things are on the horizon. What the Cat Wants is literally just a fic about pingxie cuddling so of course its very happy throughout happy. what makes monsters stop devouring also ends super happy with everyone dead being brought back to life (and i mean everyone like side characters come back babes) and the main pairs in love and happy, optimistic and ready to be brave to handle the challenges left. i try to end a lot of my fics optimistic at least? i hate ending sad so i only do it in rare cases when canon also ends sad and its only a character study...

i’d probably recommend just a ribbon, over the moon, and What the Cat Wants as my fluffiest fics throughout though.

7. Do you write crossovers, if so what’s the craziest one you have done?

When I was younger I think I wrote Death Note/Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts/X-men Evolution but tbh you could crossover KH with pretty much anything and it would only be as weird as canon.

I want to eventually write a dmbj/guardian and two silent reading/guardian crossovers (set one in the past, one in present) but who knows when I will get time for those little ideas.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

got hate on vulcan make outs and awkward admissions for too many curse words oh man. i recognize i put a lot in that one but also i don’t know why they didn’t click off the instant they saw the word fuck if they knew they didn’t like cursing? instead they read it all, told me it was awful trash that shouldn’t exist unless i took all the cursing out then it would be great. that fic is so old my dude i was not gonna rewrite it so yeah ;-;

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

like half my fics ToT idk very tender smut because i cannot write pwp without actual plot, and gratuitous mushiness and cuddling apparently. like... wmmsd is 270k of glorified plot (which admittedly is important) but wow did i take a while to get to the smut. and wwtfwiara the longest spirk fic i wrote was originally supposed to be entirely pwp but the plot escalated and i’m fairly sure a lot of people ultimately ended up reading for the intense plot (despite there being smut every single chapter lol ToT since that was the initial goal for the fic)

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Someone once asked to translate ‘in another version’ into russian, which i said yes to and to link me cause i’d love to check it out, but i’m not sure if they ever actually had the time to since they never responded after that.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

maybe way back on ffnet when I wrote so much kh. so much. just kh and death note everywhere. actually if we go back to death note fandom i’m sure like 1/2 were angsty but i cannot remember them. also one day i should... maybe post all the 100 drabbles i wrote way back in the day on tumblr, just so they’re backed up somewhere.

13. All time favorite ship!

Weilan, they are everything I want in a ship, in a story, I’m spoiled. ;-; <3 (ye zun’s my favorite character which puts me in a weird place though so shoutout to the rarepair kunlun/ye zun that i wrote 270k for and idk if anyone else has but i WILL read it)

Probably in no particular order though: weilan, xena/gabrielle, spirk, pingxie, luo wenzhou/fei du

then harold finch/john reese, root/shaw, garashir.

I watched the shows happy to see them, I will probably read a fic for any of those pairs above. Special mentions to: moshang, faith/buffy, illyria/wesley, angel/wesley, gunn/wesley, jin guangyao/lan xichen, iron triangle, a ning/pangzi all of which I’d also read a fic for if i see one.

i know if and when i read can ci pin, it may consume my attention as a sci fi ship written by priest, and overwhelm me to get added to spirk and weilan on that list, which is why i still have not read it ToT

14.What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you will?

‘What will they find when I am ripped apart?’

I love that fic very dearly and wrote it over a period of years, but I know its probably never getting finished. It still has plot I haven’t worked out, and I only get inspiration for that specific fic when I’m feeling down in a very particular way and in a writing mood. So I suspect if I do finish it will be in 5 or more years ;-; I wish I could get in the zone to finish it though.

15. What are your writing strengths?

Being able to depict emotions, make people feel what the characters are feeling. Maybe also to be able to get people to sink into a scene like its a movie being watched. those are the kinds of things I’ve heard people mention before? also the way i lay out sentences and paragraphs, i try to use length of sentences and paragraphs, stops and pauses, to control the flow of the reader’s attention and i think to a degree it works out well.

i think a strength for me is doing character studies, just in general hopefully depicting where characters are internally well.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

not planning ahead if i dare to start multi-chaptered fic. usually nowadays i avoid that by thankfully making either standalone stories with sequels or refusing to show anyone fics unless i personally already plotted it all out and wrote it already ToT. but i do miss posting wips, because this way a lot of fics never see daylight lol

also just being motivated? i go for months without being able to write, then get a burst of energy and can but i have to basically write the entire fic at that point. So it’s hard to pace out longer things I’d like to write.

maybe writing specifically - getting to the point, sometimes. at some point i got really interested in the kind of writing that lingers in scenes and sinks into them so you can savor them? and i really enjoyed it so i learned to do it, but now its definitely a detriment to me trying to Finish writing things. Whereas I know years ago I used to be much better at very short concise only-needed-words-chosen fics. I’ve very much lost that, sometimes to a point it affects my writing negatively I think.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

if its needed? i think i have added vulcan words to a few fics the same way the star trek novels do, and in my own writing for my oc universes that have some languages made for them so i suppose that would be like lord of the rings maybe.

18. First fandom you wrote for?

Maybe? X-men Evolution? I remember I literally wrote them just reacting to a movie, as you do way back on ffnet days lol. I think it was my first fanfic, and I do appreciate it for getting me into writing more (and also more into character concept art), as did kh.

19. Fave fic you have written?

this is so hard ToT i love a lot? and have a special fondness for a ton of the dmbj and the untamed ones.

a tie between ‘of a kind’ and ‘what makes monsters stop devouring.’

I love both dearly for very different reasons. of a kind is t’pring/uhura and a rare newer fic i’ve written where i managed to get back to my old concise writing style, and it flows so lovely i Love how i wrote it and how it reads. i love rereading it.

wmmsd is my guardian post canon fix-it fic and its the longest thing i’ve both ever written and completed. it proved to me i could finish chaptered fic over a time period, finish writing a long story with a complex plot, and its a great example of my favorite version of my usual writing style nowadays. it’s also weilan and ye zun centric and so being my favorite ship, and having my favorite characters, means i reread.

Bonus: what are your rare pairs?

A Ning/Pangzi OK THEY’RE GREAT, Time Raiders and TLT2 and all of Pangzi’s projecting are to blame for this ship taking off and never leaving my mind since!

Illyria/Wesley not intensely rare, but rare Enough there’s barely any fics when I love Illyria and just want to read more about herrrrr

Wells/Bellamy that was most of my old the 100 fanfic i miss wells and was bitter yeah

Willow/Buffy again not incredibly rare but I’m a sap for best friends to lovers.

Uhura/T’Pring also not incredibly rare but one of my favorite fics i ever wrote is about them and i am always thinking about them and i ;-; i WILL read ;-;

Panzi/San Shu I’m not gonna write it (probably) because i hate san shu the little demon But Panzi made me believe they’re life partners cause of tlt3 so the angst level of not knowing if you’re in love with the real San Shu or the fake? Or that now you’re with the fake, do you even know?? Fucking Wild. so wild so Intense to even contemplate wow

If any experience could be classed as truly universal, having a miserable time in sickbay seemed to be a strong contender. And it was certainly made worse when your orders were confinement.

It might have made Jim laugh, in any other circumstance, with any other officer. Mr. Chekov in particular displayed an amusing grouchiness upon any medical order, and Jim himself was known to be a rather unpleasant patient (at least judging by McCoy’s reports).

But this was not any other officer. At least, not to Jim.

“Lights 80 percent.”

As the lights rose, a sharp breath hissed out of the Vulcan lying on the biobed across the room. His body contracted, curled inward. Protecting himself? Jim wondered. Hurt?

Jim hastened to his side.

“Spock.” His hands found his back, his arm. “Spock, what is it?”

Rolling onto his back with Jim’s help, Spock dragged an arm over his face.

“Nuh’ ugelik.”

Jim frowned. It was rare to hear his first officer speak anything but perfect Standard. So rare, in fact, that it took him a moment to realize that Spock must be speaking Vuhlkansu, his native language.

“Spock?” he tried again, tugging at his arm.

“Captain, please ne-tor ha’gelan first.”

“What?”

The arm lowered. Spock’s eyes were narrow.

“The ha’gelan, Jim. Why do you not…” He stopped, with a slight huff of realization. “Am I reverting to Vuhlkansu?”

“It sounds like it.”

“I am– attempting to– ask you,” he said, clearly exerting great effort to ensure all his words were in the correct language, “to reduce– lights to a not-bright setting.” He frowned, then muttered, “Not bright? No, that cannot be correct…”

“Dimmer?” Jim offered, gently.

“Dimmer!” he echoed, with a measure of vindication. “Lights forty percent dimmer.”

The room grew darker, as requested, seemingly to Spock’s relief.

“Glad we got that one translated.” Jim moved to sit on the edge of his bed. “Has this been happening since you beamed up?”

“Since the start of my treatment. It is somewhat experimental, as you know. I was briefed on the various impacts it may have upon my psychological condition, so an event such as this was not entirely unanticipated. Additionally, it is not uncommon for individuals to revert to their primary language in times of acute stress.”

All this Jim knew. But he let him ramble on, perhaps a bit longer than he would on duty. A talkative Spock was a reminder that his beloved was alive, and at his side. And any thought like that was comforting.

“Well, you won’t have to suffer the translation barrier too much longer, I’m sure. McCoy’s already on the case.” Jim grinned, “Or else we’ll have to get you a language tutor, won’t we?”

Through the dimness, he saw something change in Spock’s expression.

“Mesh-tor t’tu than kah, ashayam?”

He did not understand the sentence - not on a cognitive level, at least. But Jim knew the last word well, and knew the man who called him beloved. He felt the hesitance in those words, the uncertainty.

Jim shifted forward. “There’s something more that’s troubling you, isn’t there?”

There was a pause. The air was filled with only the soft pulse of the bio-reader above them, and whatever Spock was clearly debating within.

“Yes.”

Slowly, Spock sat up.

“On average, it takes a Vulcan child two years and four months to achieve a proficiency in Standard. It is one of the foremost marks of kash-to’es, a measurement of one’s academic potential, and a means of testing commitment to Surak’s principles. To learn is to share in the common good. To join the work of the Federation, the many.”

His gaze fell to his lap. Jim saw him bring his bottom lip into his mouth for a brief moment.

“It took me five years, seven months to master Standard.”

There was so much that was said beyond the words themselves. Jim recalled the flashes of Spock’s memories that he had been privileged to witness. The hatred of his Vulcan peers. The painful loneliness, on Vulcan and on Earth, the longing, the doubt that he could ever belong in either place, in any place.

“Spock,” he whispered. “You haven’t lost your fluency. And it wouldn’t matter if you did. You mean too much to Starfleet for your position to be jeopardized by–”

“It is not my position that I fear for.”

What a concession. Fear. Jim’s heart squeezed at the word.

“My ability to speak Standard is negligible. It is…my relationship with you that concerns me.”

Spock shut his eyes, turned his head away. This seemed to cause him pain to admit, to speak of.

“Please attempt to understand my position before you contradict me. There has been so much about me that has proven unlovable to so many before you. Statistically, it is only a matter of time before I fail to meet your expectations. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that the only logical course for you to take is to–”

“Hold my hand.”

It made Spock stop, look around at the hand Jim held between them. The evidence of his self-disgust was still present in the furrows of his expression, though a measure of surprise softened his gaze.

“What?”

“I take your point. But I have a counter offer.” Jim nodded to his hand, waiting for Spock’s. “Please trust me.”

Carefully, his gaze flicking back and forth between their fingers and Jim’s eyes, Spock did.

A familiar rush of warmth swept over them, as hand brushed hand. Jim shifted his touch, so that their palms cradled each other.

“You are probably correct about my expectations. No one is perfect all the time, and I’m just as likely to idealize as any other human. And you’re right that I wouldn’t understand much if you stopped speaking Standard. But I do know one phrase in Vuhlkansu.”

Spock gasped, as gently, tenderly, Jim brushed his first fingers across his.

“Taluhk nash-veh k’dular, Spock.”

And it echoed through the touch. A swell of emotions rushed past his thoughts - surprise, joy, are you certain, is this really…?

“You’ve met my expectations, surpassed them. There’s nothing more that I could ask of– Spock?”

Jim felt his smile fall, looking up to see a wet streak tumbling down his stoic first officer’s face. He let go, reached for his shoulders.

“Sweetheart? No, please don’t be upset! I’m not going to leave you, now or ever. I love you. I–”

“I know.”

Spock enclosed Jim’s hands in his own. He nodded.

“I understand my oversight now, I can…feel that your declarations are sincere.”

“Of course.” Still, Jim freed one of his hands, brushed away the tears from Spock’s cheek. “That’s not a bad thing, is it?”

“No. It is quite gratifying.” He inclined his head. “Ashau nash-vesh tu, Jim.”

And though it wasn’t in his language, that made Jim feel a little tongue-tied nonetheless.
