I watched James Somerton's final video, and all I got was this 6 page document
As soon as I learned his final unreleased video was on Revolutionary Girl Utena, I knew I had to hate watch it. I didn't know that I'd spend the following 4 hours making a comprehensive doc on everything I hated about it. But here we are.
The TLDR (is this too long to be a TLDR?)
The intro section, as well as Part 2, are directly plagiarized from wikipedia. The rest is unclear.
He makes a “haha this show is so weird right guys” joke 10 different times
He reads Anthy as so emotionally stunted she literally has to be taught how to think for herself, and believes that being the rose bride makes her feel good
He says that his reading is ‘vastly different” from the rest of the community, before boldly stating that this is because he sees it as a “deeply allegorical and symbolic story”
He sees the sexual abuse as “not to be taken literally”
Insists that the show be separated into parts that are strictly literal and strictly allegorical for the entirety of parts 3 and 4, before making the contradictory move of analyzing characters as allegories during part 5
The only characters that get dedicated sections are Akio and Dios, who he doesn’t believe are the same person.
He says Dios gets his powers by “deflowering women”
He calls Akio, known child predator, a chaotic bisexual
Uses 14 year old SA survivor Anthy’s passive personality to make a joke about her being a bottom
His final point is that Utena was the real prince all along
There are no citations
Anyway, full version for people who hate themselves under the cut. With time codes, because I cite my sources.
Part 1: Intro
This entire section is almost exclusively quoted from the Wikipedia article for Revolutionary Girl Utena. Words have been changed, but the order at which certain topics come up is not. Highlights include:
0:56 In his introduction of Be-Papas, lists the founding members in literally the exact same order as Wikipedia.
1:40-2:00 His list of Be-Papas previous works is lifted entirely from wikipedia, only with the words changed. This leads to a strange moment at 1:52 where he claims Be-papas ‘lent their talents to’ Neon Genesis Evangelion, a show which started production at least a year before Be-papas was founded. On the wikipedia article for Utena, this is instead referring to the previous work of Shinya Hasegawa and Yōji Enokido
4:23 he uses a quote by Yūichirō Oguro describing the production as a “tug of war”. He seems to have lifted this in its entirety from Wikipedia, as he does not cite the actual source it is from (the box set companion book, btw)
As for James Somerton originals, at 0:44 he claims that out of all magical girl series,”none to my knowledge have been more discussed and dissected than the 1997 series Revolutionary Girl Utena” He will go back on this at 5:05, where he states that “Sailor Moon takes the lion’s share of discussion” in regard to influential magical girl anime
Part 2: Part 1
(At least I know I’m not funny, unlike James Somerton)
Speaking of which. Here is every single time he makes a “wow this show is sooooo weird you guys” joke: 6:00, 8:50, 10:40, 10:58, 13:46, 17:07, 24:16, 30:34, 41:19, 48:01
Here’s every time the punchline to the joke is the existence of Nanami, a character who he otherwise completely disregards: 10:56, 12:05, 16:22, 42:40
6:16 Claims that the “Apocalypse saga” and “Akio Ohtori saga’ are two names for the same several episodes, depending on the release. This is untrue. Instead, different releases either only have the Apocalypse saga, or split the episodes into an Akio Ohtori saga and then the Apocalypse saga.
7:58 Claims Utena intervening on Anthy’s behalf begins the first duel. While this happens in the movie, Touga intervenes in the scene he uses clips from (like literally right after the shot he uses in the video). Utena only gets drawn into the duels when Wakaba’s love note to Saionji is posted. Youtuber Noralities’ Utena video also gets this wrong, which makes me wonder if this was copied.
9:09 Claims Akio’s “End of the World” moniker is actually more closely translated to “Apocalypse”. In reality, the translation moves away from a more apocalyptic reading, with 世界の果て (Sekai no hate) apparently translating closer to “the furthest reach of a known world” or “edge of the world”. (Love the implications of this translation, but I digress)
9:10 As can be assumed from the previous point, this means I can’t find any sources that point to them not using the title “apocalypse” for religious reasons
10:10 Uses Anthy’s extreme passivity under her Rose bride persona to make a top/bottom joke. I’m gonna repeat this in case you’re just skimming. He uses a trait that likely stems from years of abuse, (possibly exaggerated by the persona Anthy uses to manipulate people), and uses it to call her a bottom.
He also just doesn’t seem to understand how the whole point of Utena constantly telling Anthy that she's just a normal girl who should make more friends is framed as Utena imposing her will on Anthy, just as much as the previous Engaged have done.
11:54 Apologies in advance for my most “um, actually!” point yet, but technically his statement that Anthy stops being host to the Sword of Dios is wrong. Akio literally pulls a sword out of her chest in the final duel. It's a more evil-looking sword of Dios, granted.
13:02 !!! CANTARELLA SCENE ALERT !!! He interprets it as them fighting over Akio?? Which like. I will allow people to have their own interpretations of vague and symbolic scenes. I will. I swear. This is not technically incorrect. It just makes me want to eat my own intestines.
14:44 Bad Anthy take #1: He states Anthy “is emotionally stunted to the point where she needs people to make decisions for her because she does not know how to think for herself” This ignores several moments of Anthy clearly making her own choices throughout the show, including the suicide attempt Somerton mentions about a minute prior. This also strips Anthy of what little agency she has throughout the story, usually exerted through messing with Utena or Nanami. (The fact that she repeatedly makes choices that contribute to her own abuse is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting parts of her character, and it's a shame that Summerton’s ‘reading’ of the story completely disregards that)
Additionally, he once again reads Utena ‘urging Anthy to think for herself” in the first arc as an unambiguously good move, and not as something critiqued in the show.
14:52 Summerton reads the Swords of hatred as symbolizing men’s hatred specifically. Again, I’m trying not to completely disregard differing interpretations to a show like Utena, but this feels very simplistic, especially considering the harm we see aimed towards Anthy by other women
16:42 Here he claims that his reading of the story seems to be “vastly different” from the bulk of Utena discourse. What is this reading? That the show shouldn’t be read literally. Or, in his words, “[we can interpret] Revolutionary Girl Utena as a deeply allegorical and symbolic story about the struggles of coming of age amidst widespread institutional corruption in a high school and which describes a passive culture of inaction in regard to brazen instances of domestic exploitation in which there is not only a question about the caporeality of the events transpiring but also which events can be taken for granted and which events are meant to signify abstract sociological institutions.” The idea that he believes this is in any way a new reading of the material honestly baffles me.
Part 3: Part 2
17:48 through 18:50 differently quotes the Wikipedia article for postmodernism. He even makes a joke at 17:55 about Wikipedia. Please kill me.
The first three themes he lists at 19:11 are just the three main themes listed on the Revolutionary Girl Utena Wikipedia page. What was that about a “vastly different” reading, James?
You’re gonna have to take my word for it, but this section is so short because it's just him talking about the various ways the story can’t be taken literally. He does, ironically, call this a hot take.
Part 4: Part 3
Here’s where the reading falls apart folks
At 23:15, he states that some things in Utena are allegorically coded, while others are to be taken literally. This is true. However, he seems to take this to mean that some parts of the show are Strictly Literal, while others are Strictly Allegorical for things going on in the Literal World.
This is apparently why he prefers the Anime to the Movie, where there basically is no separation between the Literal and Allegorical
This take is bizarre to me for several reasons, but here is my favorite. At several points, he mentions how Revolutionary Girl Utena is a work of Magical Realism. Magical Realism is literally defined by its blending of the “literal” and “allegorical”, the mix of fantastical elements in a mundane, realistic setting. This idea of the impossibility of a blurred line, that Utena must either have lore where the magic is all real and means nothing, or dedicated allegory segments quarantined from the rest of the story, is contrary to the very idea of Magical Realism.
I can’t help but wonder if Somerton took his mentions of Magical realism from a previous work, due to how little it is consistent with his final argument. Either way, this section suggests a great lack of creativity in his analysis, a shame for such a creative work.
24:36: Shiori slander, for those who care
After this he gets really worked up about people assuming symbolism in everything, even when the author ‘doesn’t make it clear something is symbolic’. He shuts down a reading of a shot in the Lord of the Rings. Miley Cyrus is there? Very The Curtains Were Blue of him.
28:22 Claims that Wakaba is the key to telling where the Strictly Literal segments end and the Strictly Allegorical segments begin. He states that, under this lens, deeply personal moments of character suffering such as all of the sexual abuse and Anthy’s suicide attempt (which he literally cites) should be read as symbolic and be “approached with uncertainty rather than confusion”. (28:24-29:13)
This also somewhat falls apart when you consider Wakaba is the jeep in the movie's car chase
And then he rants about people not liking his Attack on Titan video for a bit. Since its potential symbolism also doesn't follow hard enough rules to be symbolism. Once again, the separation of “fact vs allegory” I haven’t watched AOT, so that's all I’ll say.
Part 5: Part 4
Thank god this part is short. Much like Dios’ on-screen presence.
32:55 Makes the extremely bold claim that Dios is not Akio. As in, never even became Akio. because Dios is Strictly Allegorical.
Just to be a pedant, this is pretty explicitly disproven in the show
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Confusingly, both earlier and later he will address these two as the same character.
33:04 he also explains the root of Akio’s name in a tone that suggests this is supplemental information and not like. Literally something he explains out loud in the show?
Part 6: Part 5
This section is nearly entirely about Akio Ohtori. I would like to note that him and Dios are the only characters with dedicated segments.
38:30 The part where he states that Dios gets his powers from deflowering women.
38:46 Claims, once again, that Akio’s abuse of Anthy “may not be literal”.
38:59 “the instance of exploitation here is used because assault has deep roots as indicating that akio's gender is the source of his imbalance”  THE ASSAULT IS ABOUT AKIO NOW???
39:45 Bad Anthy take #2: “Anthy’s conformity to the Rose bride is based around the fact that she feels good being subservient because this is the only thing in her life that has ever brought her any kind of positive reward”. This is a direct quote. Anyway, I can’t think of any instances in the show where Anthy’s subservience gives her a positive reward, except maybe when she’s intentionally using it to manipulate others. As for her feeling good being the rose bride. She tries to commit suicide. Dude.
Side tangent, but isn’t this exactly what Akio says during the final 2 episodes? That Anthy enjoys being a witch? Is the main villain, who consistently says things during that very episode that are blatantly false, our source of information for this take? I guess so, since this is the dedicated Akio section.
At 40:20 he decides to introduce the concept of Anthy, Akio, and Utena as stand-ins for wider concepts, which is antithetical to his approach in analysis beforehand
Part 7: Part 6
42:40 he finally acknowledges that he’s been spending too much time talking about Akio, and literally no time on characters like Nanami
46:10 states that Utena’s exclusive motivation “is to protect Anthy from the predatorial intentions of the other dualists”, which disregards the fact, which she states herself, that she was largely participating in the duels and protecting Anthy to feel like a prince
48:04 The part where he says that Akio has ‘chaotic Bi vibes’ in regards to him sleeping with Touga, who is 17 and implied to be a long-term victim
Part 8: Part 7
54:01: His concluding point is that Utena was the real prince all along.
In true Somerton fashion, the video then ends over a scrolling wall of patrons, with not a single citation in sight.

First things first the wheel is back!
Tumblr media
This time It's new and improved with a new ✨Special✨ option which is... going to be fun. Has a lot of very specific possibilities.
As for the rules, if Lucky life was Double Life then this series will be Limited Life.
24 hours each, dying means losing an hour, killing another players means gaining back half an hour.
The boogeyman will be in play once per session, a boogey death will take away two hours and give to the boogeyman one whole hour. Failing to get a kill as the boogeyman will result in a loss of either 5 hours or whatever amount is necessary to bring down to red life depending on which one takes the least time away.
16:00+ are green and can't purposely kill other players unless they are the boogeyman.
8:00 to 15:59 are yellow and can only purposely kill greens and other yellows.
< 8:00 are red and can kill whoever.
...
There is also an hint of last life too this time... players can trade hours to other players and vice versa.
(I'm sorry @max05nb but you didn't answer in time so I can't put you in the season. You'll be able to try again next time.
Also, those who run the discord should probably invite the new guys.)

Hi. So, uh... it's been a while. And after all this time, I think it's time to be honest with myself and admit that this animatic is probably never going to be finished. I started it when I'd only watched a couple POVs of Third Life and it really shows in the designs. Some of them aren't bad - I still like how I drew Tango - but enough of them have details wrong or just weird vibes that continuing to draw them is kinda dissatisfying. That being said, I put a lot of work into it and didn't want to let it just die without saying anything, so here's a collection of GIFs from the few scenes I managed to get edited.
For the record, I am still on the Hermitcraft/Life Series brainrot train and I have some drawings that I've been working on that I genuinely like. So hopefully those will be done soon! Just as soon as I finish that one project that I started eight years ago. But it's getting there! I swear!
Also: for anyone interested, I've included the original frame-by-frame plan below the cut

MCD Episode 1 Transcript
I apologize for the wait and for how long this post is. I was honestly jumping back and forth on what was too much or what wasn't enough because I wanted to ensure everyone was able to find what they were looking for. Whether it was only lore bits, details on the setting or just fun observations. I just said fuck it so you guys get everything. If you find or have any critiques on how to make this more organized, then by all means go for it! Without further ado, I hope you like this transcript.

(( )) - my commentary

{} - MCCA Villager dialogue
Introduction [0:00]
Jess starts off by introducing the 2nd season of diaries
Shows us a signed book in her inventory that is titled "Diaries". It holds entries of all her adventures (in days) of each episode of the previous season (which I think is now non-canon and unconnected to Diaries).
"I did a ton of crazy stuff. I had a family, I raised a village, I got a Pegasus and a unicorn! It was crazy, I even became the Avatar at some point. But like all good adventures, they come to an end. However, a new one is beginning right here, right now." [0:20-0:40]
The diary ends in, "My journey has ended, but a new one is just beginning…”
Jess shows us the little "headspace" room she's in with her cat, Johnny Cat. She puts the previous diary away on a shelf before heading towards a desk to begin a new saga of adventures.
Episode Starts [1:05]
The opening scene starts at the edge of the village of Phoenix Drop, where the forest (a mix of birch and oak) line meets the last pathway around a farm plot. A man in chainmail outlined with a golden colored metal with a helmet that only allows to see his brown eyes and the barest hint of brown hair peeks through (Zenix) is speaking with another man in distinct armor, white garbs with a long black cross-like symbol on the front and chainmail; his face completely covered by his helm (Garroth)
"What are we gonna do? Since our last lord passed away, the people have been going crazy. Not to mention, we're running low on local resources. And we have no connection to the other villages." -Zenix
"Zenix, do not worry. I have a plan." -Garroth
As they speak with each other, Zenix turns around sharply, his head whipping around before his body turns towards a perceived disturbance.
"Wait, did you hear that?" - Zenix
The frame zooms out to a man cloaked in black and green who is hiding behind an oak tree a few paces away. A single green eye peeks out from behind a curtain of brown hair, his face carefully hidden away in a black hooded cowl outlined in grey with an equally grey neck gaiter. He's wearing a long-sleeved green top with a brown leather waist belt (?) with a gold buckle. His hands are covered in elbow length (?) brown fingerless arm gloves (Vylad)
The mysterious man turns and takes off into the forest
Cutscene Ends - Gameplay/RP begins [1:28]
Aphmau has spawned into the world, with the typical Minecraft starting day cycle beginning. She's wearing a purple crop top, grey half gloves, short purple daisy duke's (?) and black knee-high boots with purple laces-outline. She's in the middle of an oak forest in a small clearing in front of a water hole.
She's addressing the viewers, "Day 1, and now it is time to, of course, find some shelter before the night falls."
Looking towards the sky above the treetops, she sees the sun just rising above. "As you can see, the day has just begun, so I've got plenty of time." Grassy oak-birch forest with alliums, orange tulips, and azure bluets. The sky is clear with faint wisp of clouds.
She begins to head through the forest, "There's a lot of trees around here, so I should be good in terms of getting like a crafting bench going and all that kind of stuff but let's just go ahead and try to find like a nice little hole." ((Real))
Aphmau continues to climb up hills, past birch trees, and through short grass sprinkled with roses (poppy’s), red & orange tulips.
She stops to examine small craters in the ground, displaying dissatisfaction at not hiding a deep hole
"That...that's not a-that's a terrible hole! I'm not going to go in there, but let's try to find, like a nice little hole or something I can-"
She continues to wander past the hole and up to the crest of the hill. Only to stop at seeing a person in the distance.
Aphmau sees a mysterious hooded man in green and black (player username, Vylad) in the distance, punching a birch tree, gathering logs, and she runs in his direction, running down the hill and past the thick, low hanging, tree branches.
"Hey, there's a guy over there. Come here, I need to talk to you! I need to find a nice little hole. If you happen to know like"
She stops as she comes upon his previous location, he has disappeared
"Wh-where'd he go?- Oh my god, he did..."
She comes upon the birch tree he'd been punching and finds that he left it floating. She gazes at it in disdain and takes a quick peeved inhale before looking around.
"...that really upsets me. The fact that-" [1:50-2:05]
While she's distracted by the floating logs of the tree, he waits in the background for her attention to once again find him. She continues chasing after him, to which he flees; seemingly leading her somewhere
Through clearings, flower patches (peonies, rose bush patches, dandelions), past a rather large watering hole.
"Come here! Hey! Come here, I need to talk to you-You just left that tree...you just really left that tree undone. You just literally were-" she keeps running after him, not stopping even when he runs past two men at the edge of a farm plot of wheat.
"Oh my god, that guy is getting attacked by that guard."
The man leads her straight to two guards, nametags reading Zenix and Garroth. He runs past Garroth, who gives chase and attacks him whilst doing so. (Garroth hits him once (?))
Aphmau continues past them, even as Garroth walks past her to return to his spot. She looks around but sees he's disappeared.
"Where-Where'd he go? Where'd he go?...um alright. But...he's gone, but ya know what? He led me to a village. And there's some awesome guards here. This guard is pretty cool. What are you doing?" She turns back towards the two men before her and turns to speak with Garroth first. [2:30]
"I don't think anyone in the village will listen to any of the guards. Not after how terrible the last Lord was..." -Garroth
"Now that the Lord is gone, the village is in chaos. What are we going to do?" -Zenix
"Oh...oh! What kind of chaos is the village going through?" She travels around the wheat farm edge heading into the village onto the wooden plank pathway, past small huts, and a village library. 'Cause I could help out. I mean, I just spawned in the world so I could absolutely like take over this village and become the new terrible lord... I mean, awesome lord."
She stops at a tight intersection with a well in the middle. "...oh my god. OH MY GOD, there are so many people in here! Literally in this water!" ((The Well has claimed its victims))
She takes a horrified yet stunned look at how many people are trapped in the village well whilst also being greeted by the other town citizens like it's a normal occurrence. ((You know that one The Hole meme? Yeah, it feels like that)) [2:56]
The first person to greet her is Emmalyn the Librarian {"Greetings.}, followed by Dale the Guard {"Oh, hello. Aphmau, was it"}, Stephanie the Farmer {"Hey, what's up?"}, Jeremy the Guard {"Oh, hello there"}, Aidan the Farmer {Good day to you, Aphmau"}
She tries to go past The Well as she contemplates
"I don't know where that other guy went, but I-oh crap."
Not watching where she was walking, she falls into a hole. ((LMAO))
"Oh hey, here's my hole. Look at that." It's a small cave tunnel filled with stone, gravel, dirt, and large veins of coal. "This is a nice hole to begin in."
She begins to climb her way out the hole through a small gap to the surface next to another hut
"All right, so really, let's go ahead and see what's going on in this village”
Gets greeted by more villagers; Arthur the Farmer {"You must be new around here"}, Brendan the Farmer {"Oh, hello. Aphmau, was it?"}
She wanders back towards The Well, trying to get a vantage point of where to go next.
"So I got a lot of people here, and there's a lot of people literally taking a little nice bubble bath."
She gets greeted by a woman named Molly, the farmer, who is also trapped in The Well {"Hi, stranger."}
"And, um, I don't see that-"
She's cut off as she falls into the same hole she fell into moments ago ((Bruh, LMAO))
"Gosh darn it, I did the same thing again."
She climbs out and glares at The Well
"That is really going to hurt somebody, and uh, that's not going to be a good thing, and there's-"
She climbs the rooftop of a small hut and then looks down and sees a man with green eyes, black hair, in pale-bright green clothes, staring at her (Brendan). She stares back.
"Hey, look, there's like a bolin skin there, and who is that-?" [3:28]
She hops off the roof but is cut off as she, once again, falls back into the same hole. ((LMFAO and she teases Laurance for falling into holes when she's just as bad))
"Oh my goodness, that's the third time!"
She stands next to The Well, looking at Brendan, who hasn't stopped watching her.
"All right, first time shame on you, second time shame on me third time I don't know what's going on."
She turns her attention forward, down a long pathway, past two large farms. The one on the left has 4 plots; 3 of the 4 plots are in rows of 2, which contain wheat all next to each other, while the last row are carrots.
"But all right, so we got Brendan the farmer, and we have a bunch of stuff to work with."
The one on the right has the same setup principle as the left one, but a plot of carrots is set in between that separates the 3 plots of wheat. (Left: Wheat, Wheat, Wheat, Carrots | Right: Wheat, Carrots, Wheat, Wheat) [3:42]
She takes a look at the crops while slowly walking down the pathway
"We also have a lot of food here, which is something that was about to be a problem, but now that I'm actually here in this village, I don't have to worry about that anymore."
She gets atop the right farm's edge and begins to punch the carrots without, initially, replanting them
"All right, so let's go ahead and get settled in here. I don't think that they're going to mind if I'm here."
She proceeds out the farm, climbing up the hill towards a woman and a man who was watching her in the farm. The man happens to be Brendan, once again, watching her, but from inside a patch of lilacs ((omfg, he scared the HECK out of me. I didn't realize he was there until I looked at the paused screen)) [3:56]
“I mean Lilith the farmer. L-Lili-Lili-sorry. Lin-Linda-Lil-Lydia the farmer!”
She continues on past them up the hill until she hits the wood pathway, turning left, quickly looking around at a medium sized house with a chicken yard in the back and another farm of wheat before turning right back towards the center of the village back to The Well.
“All right so there's a lot of stuff that needs to go on here, but I think I'm going to go ahead and settle in this village. Um, I know I was looking for a hole but I kind of already found it down below, especially inside of the nice little well.”
She proceeds to run back towards the beginning edges of town, zeroing in on an oak tree.
“Um so first things first let's go ahead and start with the crafting bench. The basics of Minecraft. Literally visit-visiting the basics of Minecraft.”
She then proceeds to choose a tree near where Garroth and Zenix are still standing watch, and proceeds to punch the middle log, circling it whilst delivering precise precision jabs, collecting the logs from bottom to top. ((I just KNOW Zenix and Garroth are losing their minds LMAO)) [4:25]
“Um I think what I'm going to do is, I'm going to stay in this village now and uh, ooh! First achievement.”
“Aww I always love getting that first achievement because it's just like you're building your way up and I might even try to keep track of like, the achievements that I have. So that way I can try to get them all but I'm sure that will happen in due time. But let's go ahead get this village started.”
“Um, first let's start by fixing that stupid hole that's-that's incredibly annoying.”
She stops to look at The Well and the people stuck bobbing inside [4:50]
“Um and saving those poor people down in The Well. All right um, uh let's see this is nice-”
She stops and whirls around as she hears and sees the distinct sound of a burning zombie lumbering from the hole as it climbs to attack the vulnerable people in The Well.
“Oh, oh my god! there that zombie is about to destroy those people and I just realized that I spawned in with a bunch of really cool stuff!” [5:00] (Hotbar: 6 ½ health, 5 ½ hunger. Pet wand 1st slot, Doggy charm 2nd slot, Command Emblem 3rd slot, 33 Carrots 4th slot, 5 oak wood 5th slot)
All while she casually jumps from her perch above on the path down in front of the zombie. Punching it with the oak wood logs in hand.
She goes to show off her hotbar items, focused on them whilst also acknowledging the 2 other zombies that come burning and lumbering past her, focused on the helpless villagers in The Well.
“Um right here I have a Doggy charm, a Command Elm, and a Pet Wand which I'm going to use to destroy-!!”
She goes to try and hit them with the wand, but it does not work, retreating back before becoming determined (This type of creature must be under the effect of a potion of weakness to be tamed) [5:08]
“Oh okay…I can't use that okay. I'm just going to destroy them with my own bare hands!! I'll show these villagers how hardcore I can be.”
Knocking them back into the hole, kills both of them without taking damage
“There we go I saved you guys from the zombies.”
She earns and collects the XP and 2 zombie brains in slot 6 before climbing out the hole back to the surface.
“Awesome all right so you know we're going to have like a little rocky start here not as Rocky as these people because they're just they're just they're just terribly terribly doomed and hey there's a crafting bench here, so I don't even have to worry and why did I-”
Aphmau explores a large house next to The Well and finds it to be a Library, with books, a table + benches, and a crafting bench. She goes to use it but instead of interacting with it, she ends up in Brendans NPC interface which causes her to eat a zombie brain. She gets the hunger effect (Last for 30 seconds)
“Brenden you made me eat a zombie brain I…don't want to see you again! Just, just-just follow me, please follow me here. You need a…you need a since you're a farmer, I'm going to take you all the way over here because you could, this could be like, your little farmhouse Brendan yeah. Or Bolin since his skin is actually like a Bolin kind of skin.”
She leads him down the pathway past the farms and sets him up in a large house across from a very tiny house ((BABE HOUSE))
“So I'm going to put you right in here since I-I have some-some stuff to spare. You can come in here. See come on you, can do it. Aww man, I just housed one person-”
He then proceeds to run out the house ((me too buddy))
“Hey, hey! Where are you going!?!”
He proceeds to turn right back around to her ((he’s so real for this cause I’d be scared of this random scary woman too))
“Stay right here this is your house now Brendan it's nobody else's house but yours you have your nice little place.”
She leaves and heads back up the path
“I'm already being a better to-be-Lord than the other person was.”
She walks past 3 people but only one says anything {Adian the Farmer: Hi, stranger} [6:25]
“Hello, Aiden the farmer!”
“All right, Aiden is doing his thing, uh wow so now that we have Aiden, we have a lot of farmers here. I'm going to have to see what I can do as far as helping them all out.”
She goes back into the Library where she interacts with the crafting bench (taking a single plank, making wood to make sticks, and making a wooden sword and placing everything in her hotbar but the sword in her inventory) [6:38]
She crafts a sword, wooden axe and pickaxe
She heads outside and is greeted by 2 people: Stephanie the Farmer {Are you new around here?} and Jeremy the Guard {I haven’t seen you around before.} [7:13]
“Plus, we have a bunch of carrots, we have some zombie brains, um and we're going to free these people right here because they are just utterly dying.”
She observes while eating 3 carrots and 2 more people call out to her: Kent the Guard {Oh, hello there.} and Molly the Farmer {Greetings.}
She takes her pickaxe and destroys 2 cobblestone walls
“So let's see, I would at least like to have like, a nice little place settled into-”
“There we go, your free people run!” she watches as they all practically stay stuck only a few guards rushing out “Get out of there…” Dale the Guard free’s himself only to immediately fall back in just as Molly pulls herself out, turning to watch him fall only to turn towards Aphmau.
“Don't-don't okay…Molly just like, ‘hey I was in my bath, this is what this how I-this is how I get clean every now and then’”.
She looks to Stephanie, Emmalyn, and Molly, telling them to follow her. Stephanie { Where are you taking me?} Emmalyn {Where are we going?} Molly {Okay. I’ll come along} ((Molly, love, where are your survival instincts)) [7:43]
“All right follow me how about, you follow me. You follow me. I'm going to save the babes first. Come on babes, let's go let's go.” They follow and she takes them down the path to the tiny house across from where she put brenden.
“I'm going to-I'm going to move all the babes out this way! Oh look! They're all following me. They-they are all babes holy crap. All right so this is going to be the Babe House right here. Come on-come on in ladies. So you stay right here. Um or follow me”
The ladies then proceed to repeatedly open and close the door rapidly
“Actually if you guys-if you guys could stop opening the door that would be fantastic. It's kind of just slamming in my ear. Um, alright so you guys just stay outside of the Babe House, how-how about that? You stay there and then you stay there. There we go. Alright, so this is the Babe House right now.
She walks back to The Well
“Um I saved them, they are now in depth-depth, not they're not in depth, they're in debt to me.” [8:22-8:29]
She looks at the guards and people still stuck in The Well
“...and the guards, well the guards are really dumb. No wonder nobody's gonna listen to them!”
Acting- “I say villagers it's time we take a bath together, a bath we can't get out of!”
“All right so I don't think…I think the guards are pretty much doomed…um yeah they're doomed”, she says as she puts the cobblestone back, trapping those inside
She chops some oak trees nearby using her wooden axe
“Least try to upgrade my weapons, try to get some um..maybe a nice bed inside of my place? Um I don't even know if I'm allowed to have like the big house. I'm assuming that it's, I mean, I haven't seen like a Lord's house or anything around here, so I'm assuming that all these houses are up for grabs since the village is really kind of in like, quite literally, in chaos.” [8:57-9:18]
Walking back past The Well both Derek and Emma the guard both say, {“You must be new around here.”} [9:18]
“I-I actually am new around here and I actually haven't properly introduced myself.”
She looks into The Well and see’s everyone still in there Derek the Guard, Emma the Guard, Dale the Guard, and Kent the Guard. With Dale asking, {“Are you new around here?”} while Kent says, {“Hi, stranger.”} ((omg I did NOT remember Dale being in The Well THIS much-))
Aphmau goes to interact (chat) with Kent, laughing at seeing all the guards bobbing in the water
“Um Kent the guard..all the..nobody's going to listen to you guys if you keep acting like that.” [9:24-9:30]
He replies back with, {“You heard this from where?”}
Aphmau responds with, “I've heard things from everywhere, actually.” ((That sounds mad spooky ngl))
She goes to walk away but sees another guard trying to pass her fall into The Well [9:35]
“Yeah, see the guards just keep, they just keep going inside! they are so bad-”
She then falls into The Hole ((LMAO))
“-I got to fix all of this!”
She decides to take the opportunity to mine some stone (gathers 7 cobblestone)
“As I continue this series, I'm definitely going to have to make sure that I do a lot of farming.” [9:50-9:56]
She collects some coal from a nearby vein (collects 8 pieces)
Gets distracted by a name tag through the cobblestone (probably a villager in The Well) and then hears a cave noise
“What is that? What is that..what is that noise, that was creepy. That was like, really creepy!”
She goes back to mining stone as she notices that the sun is beginning to set (gathers 6 more cobblestone, making 13 in total)
She heads out The Hole [10:50]
She’s greeted by Cameron the Baker{“Oh, hello there.”}
She cheerfully chirps back, “Hello there, Cameron the baker! It's good to see you.”
She spies Lydia the Farmer on an adjacent rooftop [10:58]
“We have a lot of farmers here.”
She goes into the library just as Derek and Emma the guards call out to her again Derek {Oh, hello. Aphmau, was it?} and Emma{Are you new around here?} [11:01]
Aphmau heads to the crafting bench and begins to craft a stone sword
Adian the farmer pops in {You must be new around here} before going to stand on the crafting bench, looking at her [11:08-11:10]
“Why do people keep coming and Stan-why do people keep coming and-!” he suddenly disappears
Flabbergasted and slightly panicked, Aphmau looks around the library, calling out, “where did you go!?... What is going on? Where did he go? Where did he-”, outside the glass windows shows that it’s almost night time and she then heads back to the crafting bench to then finish up
“I'm assuming he went to bed but that was just creepy as heck! I mean, come on! You don't just stand on somebody's crafting table, look at them, and then disappear! It's completely rude!”
Aphmau quickly makes a stone shovel, stone pickaxe, and axe
“Okay, I'll go with it, if that's how this village wants to play. This is a little weird.” [11:34]
Aphmau then proceeds to make some torches, stating, “Of course, I need some torches, and I think we're going to set down some torches here in the village, if there aren't some there already. I don't think there are, uh, because just traveling around, I haven't seen anything crazy, but I'm going to go ahead and just..you know, kind of light up my area.” (Made 16 torches, placing 2 in the library before heading out; 14 left)
Looking around, night has completely fallen. She spies the guards nearby, still in The Well.
“I feel so bad for those guards. Okay, um so… I can't help but laugh at them because they're just being silly now.” (Placing 2 more torches on either side of the libraries door; 12 left)
Almost falling into The Hole again, she takes the rest of her cobblestone and covers the top half up
“Now- Oh god, I hear zombies.”
Going down into The Hole and places a few torches as she travels through it (5 torches; only 7 left)
“Let's just start to get the mine going, um, so I can start digging down deep and finding out feelings and stuff like that-” as she walks past another opening, placing another torch, she sees two mobs (creeper and skeleton) in the entrance but only the creeper goes to attack her, “oh God there's a creeper, oh god there's a skeleton.”
Drawing her stone sword, Aphmau fights the creeper off. Hitting, retreating, repeat.
“Go away Creeper! Shoo shoo shoo!”
She successfully kills it as it drops XP (3?) and two gunpowder. She runs to collect it, turns the corner and see’s the skeleton right there
She kills it, only losing 1 heart of damage and getting 1 arrow and XP
Taking a breath and telling herself, “she’s fine, she’s good.”
“I hear zombies and I don't like it. I don’t like it at all.”
She goes and mines a nearby wall, thinking the zombies are behind the stone (collects 12 cobblestone; 13 cobblestone in hotbar slot 6) before turning back to the coal vein from earlier (collects 8 coal)
Still seeing the nametag, she digs towards them to see if she can get them out (collects 19 cobble; 32 cobblestone in total)
“I still see more like, little health bar thingies, down that way, so let me go take a look in here, see if I can find something. ‘Cuz these guards-are they drowning? Like are they legit drowning?”
She mines a block and The Well water rushes past her
“Oh God! See I have a feeling that this would be a wonderful idea if-if-”
She places the block back and realizes the name tag is gone [13:58]
“Oh my God! Are they dead!? Did they die, did they drown!? WHAT! They're gone…”
Aphmau goes and mines some stone + coal (12 cobble and 2 coal; 44 cobblestone in total)
“I'm a little sad, but at least we know why the village isn't going to listen to the guards anymore, because they're just going to get themselves murtalized and stuff ((The little sniffle jess makes ;-;))
She leaves the small cave through the furthest exit, leading into the woods by the farms [14:32]
Collecting flowers along the way as goes back towards the housing area, she thinks about her next move, contemplating how she hasn’t properly interacted with anyone (collects 2 white tulips and lilacs)
Going towards The Well, she sees a group of 5 zombies (3 being attacked by the guards in The Well, and 2 she kills herself) [14:57]
“Oh gosh. Oh gosh! There they are, there's a zombies! They were trying to attack the guards”
Noticing the guards hitting the zombies from The Well
“Oh, the guards are smart, they're hiding themselves…you cowards don't do that. You got to come out and fight. Fight for your right… to party.” ((lol))
Aphmau breaks the barriers once more, with Dale immediately rushing out only to turn around ((with the speed)), knocking both he and Emma the Guard, who was almost out The Well, right back in ((LMFAO))
Seeing this, Aphmau gives up and walks away leaving The Well sides open
“I'm going to leave that open just in case the guards decide that they're going to stop being so flaky.”
Looking around curiously, she checks the small hut next to The Well and see’s Aiden sleeping
“Oh, this is where Aiden the farmer lives”
Closing the door, she goes past the farms towards the Babe House and Brendan’s home. As she approaches, she sees zombies going after them
“Then we got the-BABES! Oh, they need, they need help! They need help, they need help, they need help!”
Rushing forward, she slays the zombie at the door while a sleeping Emmalyn and Emma remain unaware of the chaos
“These babes are lucky that these monsters didn't go after them.”
Turning, she sees 3 more zombies trying to get to Brendan
“Oh gosh, oh gosh. Why are-oh my gosh! The zombies are trying to get my babes” ((Is Brendan being counted as a Babe lmao??)) [15:35-15:46]
She tries to get Emmalyn and Stephanie inside but they won’t budge so Aphmau hit’s Stephanie {Ow! Why did you hit me?} (losing 1 point of health; 19/20.0)
She apologizes to Stephanie but asks her to go inside, which she does, before turning to Emmalyn and hitting her too {Ow! Why did you hit me? Before quickly saying Oh, hello. Aphmau was it?} [16:09]
Tries to get her to follow her (clicking move instead of follow me), trying to explain and apologize for hitting her
“I'm sorry I had to hit you, I didn't mean to-...I really didn't mean to, but I'm trying to save your life here! I'm trying to save your life, I'm thinking of you. Come here-!”
Seeing that Emmalyn hasn’t come through the open door, she panics
“Hurry before the zombies and the spiders get in! Where'd you go!?” [16:24]
Going outside, she sees that Emmalyn has completely disappeared
“She does doesn't like me anymore, and I completely-”
Just like she predicted, a spider jumps from the babe house to Brendans roof and goes to attack her ((LMAO)) [16:30]
She kills it gaining XP and 2 string (losing 1 health point; at 5 health and 5 hunger)
Going back to the library, she goes past Dale and Gary the Guard, with Gary saying {Hey, what’s up?} [16:43]
“I’m going to go into my house (the library) and retreat for the night”
Aphmau proceeds to eat 3 carrots to fully restore her hunger and health (27 carrots left)
She turns seeing Emmalyn run in [16:55]
“Oh hey, look she made it! You made it! I'm so happy you're here.”
She commands Emmalyn to stay (Emmalyn likes her at 1 heart, her mood: agitated, trait irritable)
“You can stay with me tonight, all right? You can-I'm sorry. I'm sorry about having to wake you up with such a rude manner, but you know, I really just…I really was looking out for your safety Emmalyn the Librarian.” ((Insane since that’s her own house and omg I didn’t see Dale patrolling (looking up inside) outside the house)) [17:03-17:13]
Aphmau proceeds to look around the library, realizing something
“You know, this is actually a nice place for you. So you can hang out here, because I got lots of books! You can read books and have like, a great time!” ((LMFAO this is insane within canon lore. Is this considered gaslighting??))
Aphmau tries to reassure her and make her stay
“Here you, you'll be, we'll be fine. We-you'll be fine, don't worry. I got you baby.” [17:20]
Aphmau does her begins her outro, turning and looking outside the large library window before going outside to talk to herself
Dale greets her with {I haven’t seen you around before} [17:27]
“We still have a lot of questions that need to be answered like, where did that guy go in the beginning and how am I going to actually fix up this village? Because it seems like a lot more problems than I had originally anticipated!”
Standing on the rooftop of the house in front of the library, she looks out around her, spotting a creeper wandering at a cave entrance above the Babe house
“We got a creeper infestation problem over there,” going to The Well she begins to pull out her cobblestone [17:41]
“We got our guards, which are making like, a huge guard soup here...I might have to like just cover this thing up”
Seeing no one in The Well ((a surprise tbh)), she uses her cobblestone to remake the barrier and then places 6 cobblestone overtop so no one can fall in ((I thought she was gonna accidentally get rid of the water for a second))
She goes back into the Library, Emmalyn greeting her {How can I help you?}
“And I will see you all, in the next episode. Until then, hopefully Emmalyn won’t be mad at us anymore. Take care! Bye-Bye!” [18:01-18:10]
Episode Ends Cue Nostalgic Outro Music

Holy shit. TIMEBOMB FANS STRAP IN FOR THIS.
(lots of you have probably already seen this video before, but here’s a quick reminder)
First let’s start with the pinned comment that breaks down time stamps in the video:
Introduction (Ekko did not just have a SLIGHT crush on Jinx lol) : [0:00]
RIOT geniously hiding stuff about Timebomb till the reveal : [1:32]
The timelapse (lots of uncorrect lines in the audio cause we didn't know they met at that time, so it was just me theorizing, but I guess I wasn't wrong now lol) : [2.35]
Ekko-Jinx background, Timelapse + what we know from LORE, and how RIOT been playing with our sanity : [3:20]
✨ WALL ANALYSIS [starting with the easiest ones to see, most interesting parts are near the end]
Intro : Ekko's Wall painted in a RORSCHACH Art style [patchwork graffiti] - being full of Powder & Jinx, Ekko being in love representations, and references to Arcane : [7:28]
Jinx's heroe number and Ekko having her X and her signature all over him : [10:09]
(!) Please see the threads in description to see it all pointed out (!) The video didn't really say it right but these pictures and explanations will definitely make you see what I mean, and also, what I mean about the hair-clip and the Firelight symbol might be theory but I have explained in my thread all the things I discovered that make me thing the Firelight symbol, seeing how it changed, might have a link with Jinx in the first place when it was invented by Ekko.
RIOT playing with us and hiding the fact Jinx was on the wall : [12:14]
This is NOT hypothesis : [12:58]
The developers pointing out the forms we need to see with the thunder hextech energy : [14:54]
Yes, Ekko was in love, and he represented himself 6 times looking at her with bewildered eyes, heart in his eyes, blushing or spying on her during their teenage days : [15:18]
✨ SUMMARY FOR THE THE PAINTINGS --------
NOTE : sometimes you will see the paintings I’m pointing out even better in the next paintings I will point out. By exemple, the Firebomb and the Ekko blushing drawing described in N°2, are clearer and more easy to see in the screencaps pointing out painting N°3! Just try sticking till the end of the video to see them all! ;)
First observations & How I started my Analyze : [16:11]
N°1 - Arcane Jinx main painting on the left - representing Ekko’s Hope to get her back : [16:41]
N°2 - Powder main painting on the right (double faced Powder-Jinx + Ekko blushing + Jinx Chumper bomb) : [17:44]
N°3 & N°4 (I apologize for the lame quality of this one but it was quite hard to make it stand out!) - Screaming/crying Powder, teenage Powder-Jinx drawn K/DA style boxing + teenage Ekko with his Firelight jacket standing on the other side : 5 scenes painted in one and moving along with the seconds! (SIDE NOTE : the cube design on the painting represents the Arcade place in which Jinx boxes the machine, I forgot to mention it in the video!) : [19:19]
N°5 - Vi abandoning Powder - exact Arcane scene : [21:28]
N°6 - Get Jinxed scene from Arcane and Ekko spying on her : [22:14]
N°6, 7 & 8 - Ekko representations watching with bewildered eyes, blushing, with his Firelight mask AND A HEART around the 2 middle Powder & Jinx paintings : [25:20]
Back on N°7, beautiful painting of teenage-adult Jinx with shimmer eyes on top of the wall : [26:26]
N°9 - Little Powder from Arcane & Ekko blushing next to it : [27:47]
N°10 - Doll Jinx with Arcane's clothes : [28:28]
N°11 - Black & white picture of the same screaming/crying Powder represented on painting N°3 : [28:50]
N°12 (that you can see more clearly later in the screencaps of N°27!!) - Ekko in GILDED skin & Jinx with untie long hair drawn in negative mode : [29:04] (!) in the video I said Firelight jacket but now that I discovered all the Ekko-Jinx matching stuff in the Gilded universe (and them hiding in the crowd side-by-side on the Caitlyn’s Gilded artwork lol), I realized it looked like Gilded Ekko in that painting!
N°13 - Young Ekko with unknown person on his side but seeing how the rest of the wall is Jinx, it is probably Powder : [29:19]
N°14 - Young Powder & Ekko talking, probably the talk they had after Powder was taking in by Silco, seeing how Ekko is represented like a skeleton (dying inside) : [29:37]
N°15 - Jinx blue smoke/cloud tattoos representation (!) this cloud I'm pointing out is actually part of the ''cracking the hextech scene'' I've discovered later on, and is located on her shoulder! I will show the painting of that scene later in the video don't worry ! ;) [30:25]
N°16 - Symbols next to the Get Jinxed painting, that have different meanings in the next scenes I will show when the wall will be upside down (singing, crying + hextech symbols) : [30:32]
N°17 - THREE PAINTINGS IN ONE : Powder's red eye when she looks at Silco at the end of Act 3 + Jinx's face/mouth when she looks at Ekko before she made her bomb explode : [30:45]
N°18 - Representation of baby Powder's trauma on the bridge : [31:54]
N°19 - Lighting the flare scene drawn negative mode again, being represented in every way/side you turn the wall : [32:12]
N°20 - Random elements, like Ekko's young blushing face, giving the shape of a heart when you turn them upside-down : [32:29]
N°21 - Young Powder with Arcane's clothes, but looking more fierce as the Powder we know. Perhaps one Powder from Ekko's memory, or the Powder from the Timelapse : [32:40] (!) You can see this painting more clearly in the screencaps of N°27 (!)
N°22 - Jinx drawning/reborn scene with Silco : [32:56]
N°23 - (sorry I have deleted this one since I couldn't point it out in the video, but here's what it was : the black canvas on each side of the scene, also have Jinx & Powder's representations on them, but you'll have to zoom in and improve lighting + the quality yourself to see them cause it can't be shown in a video ToT/)
N°24 - Powder’s leather bag + teenage Ekko staring + blue & pink hand palm : [33:17]
N°25 - Big Jinx monkey-bomb from Arcane, near the other paintings of that exact same scene : [33:37]
N°26 - Drawn negative mode : ''Devil'' Jinx from the bridge scene : [34:08]
N°27 - Two paintings in 1 - Teenage or adult Ekko & Jinx + Ekko’s Gilded skin again ? : [34:31]
N°28 - Jinx ''cracking the Hextech'' scene : [34:57]
N°29 - Firelights representations, same as the ones Jinx drew in her Diary : [35:40]
N°30 - end [36:05]
MORE INTERPRETATIONS & BETTER QUALITY OF SOME PAINTINGS :
N°12 - Ekko & Jinx with untie long hair drawn in negative mode but also, if you look at it at [34:55], you'll see it way more clearly AND also see that it gives Jinx lighting up the flare scene with Ekko on his overboard flying around her.
N°27 - at [34:37] you'll see the young Powder from N°21 way more clearly!
The Jinx Monckey-bomb. At [30:58] ; [31:55] and [34:13] you might see the Jinx Monckey-bomb more clearly as the pictures are in better quality or more focused on this area !
N°22 [32:06] : I forgot to mention it in the video but in that drawing-reborn scene with Silco, you can actually see fingers/a hand (drawn by the Jinx mouth from N°28) pushing on Jinx’s skull/in her hair which seems to be pulling her under water.
More stuff about the Get Jinxed painting and the Devil Jinx one : on top of the Get Jinxed painting, there is a scary white mask/face that I believe to be representing Silco. When you turn the picture upside down, and try not focusing on that mask, it then gives off the Devil Jinx I showed earlier.
Also, the big yellow/bewildered eye in the middle of Jinx chest in the Get Jinxed painting could be representing the Eye of Zaun, as this a tech-nerd Jinx being represented here, and as Ekko is represented staring/spying on her, it could imply that Ekko has recognized Powder in her in that moment, the Zaunite child with whom he grew up with and whom he loved.
End note : I forgot to mention it in the video but there are also 2–3 Vi representations on the Jinx paintings, one from the scene where she left her on the street and went to calm herself away from her, and another with her head and shoulders down, on the main Jinx painting on the left, that looks like the Vi introducing scene from Episode 4 in the prison.
OKAY INSANE. Next I’m gonna give you some screenshots I took so y’all can get some visuals to the stuff you just read. Also, WATCH THE VIDEO!!! The creator does a lot better at exposing than I do—never mind the fact that this is literally their findings! (I didn’t find any of these, just watched the video and now spreading it to tumblr). I have absolutely no recollection of which N• photo these images belong to so you’ll have to play connect the dots lmao
A lot of the images also already have text on the screen explaining, I’m just gonna paraphrase what the voice in the video (not the text) is saying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two photos are telling us how Ekko’s down bad ass based the entire firefly logo off of Jinx and her logo… and for the context in the first image about the emboldened Z, here it is:
Tumblr media
PRACTICALLY IDENTICAL.
Tumblr media
This is the video creator explaining their level 1 billion brain power on thinking outside the box and how the idea of the painting was to go back to an Ekko origin short that came out YEARS before Arcane did. They’ve been planning this entire time, and when the description pasted far above talking about the different photos it was talking about the images painted on a wall in an Ekko origin (will show screenshots next)
Tumblr media
The creator of the yt video found almost FORTY Jinx paintings and references to Arcane (which hadn’t been anywhere near its release date when the origin came out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These ones on the large wood slab are CRAZY. The artists and develops had loads of fun because in the last photo you can see jinx screaming/crying if you focus on all the colours in the photo.
However, the YouTuber blurred Jinx’s face to hell you focus on the blues and pinks where the developers/artists made kind of like a moving mini scene that moved while the video itself moved. To my understanding you can see Jinx boxing and at some point Ekko shows up, too.
(I’ll repost this so I can add more images 👍)

IT’S TIME FOR THE in-depth scene-by-scene character analysis on No Way
THIS POST IS HEAVILY INSPIRED BY @skythealmighty 'S WHEEL ANALYSIS!!!! GO READ IT RIGHT NEOW ITS REALLY GOOD
TL;DR: No Way has one of the most prominent character development arcs in this show, from starting off as naive and overly trusting of Clock to being paranoid and distrusting of anyone new, a lot like Wheel was from the very beginning. Oh and also Tile is a BITCH-
WARNING: Long ass post with 11 THOUSAND words and exactly two pictures so have fun and good luck LMAOOO
Ok, alright, so. The analysis isn’t going to be very serious up until 4:00, since that’s when things started to get really bad for them. But I’ll still do all the other episodes because I’m . incredibly normal! This will get updated once 8:00 releases on the 22nd so umm. Yeah ANYWAYS
IT’S TIME FOR THE [1:00] - Who’s Jason??
0:19 - “I don’t think I had anything in particular planned for today but I am content” “Wow! That’s nice.” “NO! That’s boring, there’s nothing to do!!” “I don’t think they were talking to you..” “Uh- Wha-” [glass shattering noise]
There isn’t much to point out here, other than No Way being a supportive friend to 57-ball, but I would like to note No Way’s expressions when Refill Station does their whole. Thing. They get startled from the shatter, so much so that they take a step back, and just look at RF all confused and kind of concerned as they walk away. 57-ball doesn’t even look confused, he kinda just looks. Done LMAO
2:24 - “Compete in my competition show!!” “Oh!! Uhh…” “Okay I’m in!”
Note No Way’s immediate compliance and almost clear excitement in the way they move their arms, a very clear contrast from everyone else’s blank stares (and Vase’s hesitancy. And Wheel’s >:|). This will be important later on methinks.
4:39 - “Okay, street sign, car tire, and… pool ball. Dang!! If only you were like a street lamp or crossing signal or something, would have had a cool team name idea for that.”
Nothing too notable here, I just like that they immediately started talking and took a page out of Polka Dot’s book with her thought process. The two have a few things in common, one of which being that they’re both kinda immediately into the competition when it starts. I also want to point out the expression shifts, especially with 57-ball. He looks almost offended at what No Way said and I don’t think they even realize that. It’s a nice touch!
I also want to note the way No Way looks at Wheel during the team name jingle. They almost look sympathetic? Like an “aw man, that sucks.”
6:56 - “Ok, well, we gotta get this card as far away from here as possible if we don’t want the host to hear it.” “Ok.” [Wheel kicks the card] “N- NO WAY.” [win sound]
Nothing to note here. I just like how this is the only thing No Way says in this entire sequence and it's some really dumb pun about their name. Makes me laugh every time
I also really like how the same win sound plays when Vase says “no way” even though it had nothing to do with them
10:39 - [After credits scene]
This is just silly to me because at the bottom of the screen you can see No Way and Wheel run by. Like. Why is Wheel chasing them. Why are they running. What happened here LMFAO
(UPDATE AFTER HAVING A FEW PEOPLE READ THIS: THEY ARE CANONICALLY PLAYING TAG I’M GOING TO SCREAM THAT'S SO CUTE)
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: This episode mostly acts as an introduction to the characters, so there isn’t much to say here. Other than, like, No Way’s basic personality traits; good friend, kind, supportive, excitable, doesn’t always realize what they’re saying can be seen as offensive. Maybe has ADHD but I might just be projecting because they’re my favorite. That’s not a personality trait but . shut up
IT’S TIME FOR THE [2:00] - Best Source For Weather Information
0:29 - “I NOMINATE NO WAY!” “I’m already out man… anyways, it says next up is Words With Friends Tile.”
I want to point out the fact No Way is holding a clipboard and paper. I think this just shows they’re pretty smart, despite some moments where it would seem the opposite. I think, as of now, they’re pretty naive, especially when it comes to Clock. As if to contrast Wheel’s paranoia about Clock, they seem to immediately trust them. Though so does like, everyone else except for Wheel so I might just be looking too deep into things.
I also want to note their tone of voice when they say next up was WWFT because they also sound kind of confused and slightly surprised. They were likely thinking the same thing as Wheel (“He doesn’t have any eyes!”) but didn’t say anything, probably because them and Tile are friends
I also like how they look very slightly surprised when Tile and Wheel start fighting. Maybe not surprised, but more just like “Oh! Okay!”
0:51 - “Okay then, how about instead of Tile we put The Sun up there?” “Yayyy!!” “Okay. Three, two, one, go!!”
I really like No Way’s voice. Anyway, this is another point to them being pretty smart; it seems like they’re the one who organized this whole staring contest game, given the clipboard and them doing the countdown. Granted I don’t think they realized having 57-ball stare directly into the sun would be a bad idea.
3:56 - “Oohhh yeaaa, we’re so back!!” “Ooohh! Where did you go?” “You just don’t get it dude.” [Gasp] “Wooaaoowwww!!” [Clock claps their hands]
Another moment of No Way being naive. I also think their reaction to WWTF is a mix of them just being fairly excited for the next challenge and also just being friends with Tile in general. I like to think they think everything Tile does is cool. Writing wise, this is likely just to play into Tile’s whole cool guy bit. This scene also somewhat confuses me because, like No Way, I also don’t get it. (Come to think of it I wonder if this was meant to be like a fourth wall break from Tile?)
4:23 - “The first HALF of you will be safe, while the rest of you will be up for elimination.” “Seems simple enou- wait a second, there’s only 9 of uhhhhhh UUUAAAAA–” [enter: no ways] “what is happening….”
Ah yes, what I think is the start of No Way’s … iffyness? I guess? The way they say “what is happening” almost makes it sound like the process of being split into two people made them feel sick, and this is aided by their expression. Also, their face as it was happening makes me think that it was painful, which isn’t much of a surprise. They did not like this.
4:37 - “Get your good pal to the finish line and you’ll be safe!” “This doesn’t seem very fair…” “Sure it is!” “Oh ok!”
This feels like another point to them being naive and very trusting of Clock. At first they still seem very affected by the being split in two bit, going through the logic in their head, but then when Clock says it's definitely fair, the logic shifts. They’re likely thinking “Well, they are the host, so they must know what’s best for their challenges!”
As a side note, I like 57-balls “what” before he gets interrupted by Wheel. He’s probably thinking, “how is their opinion so easily swayed. What.”
6:03 - [Pretty much just No Way struggling to get No Ways to move, punching it, trying to throw it only to find its too heavy and hurting themself, and then trying to hit it with their sign pole and going FLYING]
No Way is quick to get frustrated and resorts to getting physical when No Ways doesn’t budge. Though it is likely that they spent some time just yelling at it before they tried punching, just off-screen. This could also possibly be showing us that No Way is kind of weak and uncoordinated, given how easily they fell backward trying to pick No Ways up and the way they hadn’t even swung the sign pole before getting flung over the railing. Of course, the frustration could also come from being stressed about the fact No Ways even exists, as they aren’t shown to get particularly frustrated fast when things don’t go their way later on.
6:30 - “aaaaAAAAAA OUGH- That was awful…” “Welcome to being a winner, Octagon!! Because you just won th-” “Wai- I wo- I won the???” “I didn’t finish my sentence, w-what are you doing here Octagon?” “I’m not an octagon, I’m No Way!! See?- uuhh…” “You’ll need your friend here too to be safe as well reme-” [Slowed Down Win Sound] “No Way is safe!” “Woohoo!” “Now that’s cool brah.”
Ok a lot happens here so I’ll try to break it down.
Despite likely knowing better, No Way gets very excited at the prospect of winning The   , and even stims a little bit, despite the fact it’s impossible for them to have won the whole competition right then and there.
When Clock doesn’t recognize them, they almost look offended, and their tone while explaining that they aren’t just an octagon reflects that. The way they try to grab their sign pole without realizing it isn’t there anymore makes me think that they’re forgetful, since they just forgot they took it off not even a minute ago. I’m not sure how to explain the way they reacted to realizing it wasn’t there anymore, but the noise they make is really funny to me.
No Way gets startled by No Ways just sorta Sliding In, though this fear is immediately left behind and replaced with excitement upon learning they were safe.
Important mention: The little dance they do with Tile. Friendship! Yaay!
7:05 - “...and now both No Ways and No Way are safe.”
No Way almost looks at No Ways with a very unsure look on their face, like they still aren’t sure of what to make of it. They know that they don’t exactly like it, but they also know it’s almost like… a part of them? They are very confused and conflicted about the existence of this creature.
8:01 - “AYGHAGHUUSHASAAH-” [No Way and No Ways become one again] “Ughh, Clock please never do that again.”
This shit is PAINFUL for them, judging by their expressions as they’re being merged (though they are very fast). They sound sick to their stomach again when they ask Clock to never do that again. Like I said before, the start of their iffyness about this. They are still naive though, that’s for sure.
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: This episode mostly highlights two traits; their naivety and that they are actually fairly smart and shouldn’t be written off as dumb just because they’re naive, since being naive doesn’t always mean the person is stupid. I also just want to say that them being naive and excitable in this episode is important for later. Oh also, sprinkling in a little bit of mind fuckery too. For fun.
IT’S TIME FOR THE [3:00] - Next
1:18 - [Clock typing away on a keyboard] “Go ahead, do it!!! Just do it al-” [Blue screen] “What is that thing?” “I don’t know??”
No Way (and 57-ball) look so extremely concerned and afraid for Wheel, especially with the way they have their hands positioned, their expression (with the tiny dot eyes for a second and exaggerated D:), and how they’re the first person to ask what the blue screen and selection box around Wheel is. This is a clear representation of how much they really do care about their friends, which is backed by their concern for Refill Station back in the first episode and other moments in episodes further ahead.
4:27 - “Oh! Sounds like it’s time for the challenge, wanna come with?” “Sure!” “Alright, hold on!” [Music]
POLKAWAY FRIENDSHIP YAAAY. I feel like these two are also synonymous with each other but I’ll get into that later. I’m noting this not only because it's a favorite scene of mine, but also this shows how “go with the flow” No Way is. They grab onto the polka dot and as they’re flying, they look scared to fall off or something. And then two seconds before this sequence ends, they start to look sick. This, along with how sick they sounded last episode when it came to No Ways, leads me to believe that they might have a weak stomach or just get motion sick easily
4:41 - “Where’s Refill Station?” “Oh I forgot about him. He’ll make his way over eventually I’m sure.”
Very small moment but important to me. They are the first person to realize Refill Station was missing and ask about them, and Polka Dot even states she straight up just forgot about him. Yet another instance of No Way caring for their friends.
5:09 - “Also, you should be happy I don’t have to cut any of you in half this time…..” (fear)
Oh Boy Oh Boy! I don’t know why Clock said this– whether it was out of malice or just a statement since, y’know, they aren’t exactly wrong– but No Way’s reaction of pure fear is a sign (heh) that they were likely somewhat traumatized by the experience. Oh yeah, now we’re finally getting somewhere with this.
5:54 - ”Sure was nice of clock to give us these cups right Tile?” “Mhm.” “...uhhh you doin alright?” “I had this really good fruit earlier brah, it tasted really good and it was super juicy, and tasted really good man!” “Uhmm okay.” “AND it was full of water, dude! Bro, I think Clock would like it a lot.” “Are you sure? It seems like people are already on their way to that lake over there, we gotta be quick!” “Don’t worry man, it’s right next to the lake anyway!” “Alright…”
I think No Way commenting on it being nice that Clock gave them cups could be them trying to convince themselves of that, given how almost awkward it sounds, and especially with the way they ask Tile for feedback. Or maybe I’m just straight up wrong and they’re just looking on the bright side. (most likely the latter)
Once again with No Way caring about their friends! They immediately think something might be wrong with Tile because he gives a response that isn’t typical for him.
As Tile is describing the fruit he had earlier, No Way looks at their cup like they’re considering something, likely about using the fruit instead of just getting water. They look and sound preoccupied when they give the response of just “uhmm, okay.”
When they ask if Tile is sure and mentions the others going to the lake, it's pretty obvious how much they want to actually win the challenge, probably because they’ve been on a pretty good winning streak.
This isn’t fully related to No Way but this is my 4th time watching this and I’m noticing how lowkey manipulative Tile sounds here, like he’s trying to keep No Way from being safe by pulling them away from the lake to get this fruit he’s talking about. Mostly saying this because of how he adds the bit about Clock (putting emphasis on the “AND”) after No Way doesn’t show interest in the fruit at first.
7:39 - “Thank you for telling me about this juicy snack! I think I’ll be on my way to take this over to Clock now, and- AAGHHHHH- oughh!” “Aww yeaahh!! Green can’t say we’re not cool now!” (music) “Tile. TILE.” “Bro what is it.” “The fruit…!!” “Yeah bro I………oh. Okay! You wanna jump in the water and get it?” “No way!! You’re the one who…”
I want to focus on No Way’s expression here- specifically when Tile shoves Green out of the tree. They look so surprised and I feel like there’s at least a hint of concern in there. Surprised because oh my god, Tile, how could you do that?? And concerned because that impact sounded really bad for Green. The way they stare for a little drives this home too. (say it with me now: NO WAY CARES A LOT ABOUT THEIR FRIENDS)
When they start trying to get Tile’s attention, they sound and look frustrated, obviously partially because Tile was just sorta dancing and took a moment to respond, but also because he just shoved their friend out of a tree.
For like, a millisecond before No Way reminds Tile of the fruit, they seem to be trying to think about something. At first glance, I’d assume they forgot about what they were supposed to be doing, but now I think this is a moment of them thinking about whether or not to bring up what Tile just did, ultimately deciding to just bring up the fruit again.
No Way instantly refuses to jump into the water themself, and proceeds to almost tell Tile that he should do it instead because… Well, because he shoved Green and the fruit out of the tree. Though they backtrack on this to instead suggest they do Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide. I think they backtrack and suggest RPS entirely because they know Tile so well, and they know he won’t just do it if they tell him to. Also, I think them almost bringing up the shoving incident would’ve been one of those “take accountability of your actions” type things
Also I like their face when Tile says “you’re on.” smug little shit
8:37 - “What?? Where’d the lake go?” “eeughhh….. I don’t feel so good.” “Yaa bro, Green looks like he’s seen better days. I say we just take the fruit back and dip.”
No Way being the first to question when weird shit happens ….
IMPORTANT POINT HERE. I want to specifically point out the way No Way looks at Green with a sad/sympathetic look on their face. Well– okay. If you look close enough, No Way isn’t actually looking at Green, and is instead looking at the spot in front of him. From the look on their face, it’s like they’re thinking about if this is really ethical. They care about Green, that much is obvious, and they also care about Tile. While yes, Green did technically try to steal the fruit from them, that didn’t give Tile the right to seriously injure him. It’s like a moral dilemma. Of course their thought process gets interrupted by the MASS AMOUNT OF WATER FALLING TOWARDS THEM-
…Also more of Tile being kind of an asshole
9:10 - “WAAAIITTTT!! HERE HERE I HAVE SOME!” “Yeaa, The Sun and Vase are good.” “Rrrgh-” (Music)
Ah, their final desperate attempt to be safe despite knowing it’s probably over. Also, their frustration boiling over in the form of them yelling into the sky like an anime protag. This is likely mostly frustration due to losing the challenge, but I imagine it’s also because they had wasted so much time with Tile.
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: Man, the sudden realization I had about Tile midway through this is crazy. He almost seems unsympathetic to, like, everyone, and this even happens throughout the show too. Anyways, No Way gets a little more frustrated this episode! Especially with Tile. The fall of NoTile friendship….
IT’S TIME FOR THE [4:00] - Do NOT Use The Popcorn Button
0:30 - “Soo! What are we doin here?” “Not being in the water? I can only swim for so long, I’m made out of metal y’know??” “Yaahh I don’t know what they’re talking about, I just like this tree.” “Okay!” “WOAH BRO, WHAAAA” “Wh- WHAT why did you do that?!”
No Way is so frustrated here bro. Completely fair too. They’re exhausted from trying to swim, finally made it to the tree to rest, and then Clock comes and interrupts it. They looked so relaxed before Clock landed in the tree and startled them so bad they almost fell out of it. Also the way No Way deadpans when Tile flings himself over is funny.
No Way immediately asks Clock why they knocked Tile out of the tree, offended and upset about it for him. It’s like they’re slowly starting to be done with Clock’s shenanigans.
0:46 - “It’s ti- *ringnti* It’s 4 o’clock, meaning that it is time-” “For the elimina-” “The challenge!” “Huh?-” “Yea, I meant the elimination.”
No Way looks so sad here, and from the way their voice shakes slightly, they were definitely dreading it. They hadn’t been through a single elimination yet, having been on a winning streak until now. From what we can tell, they have no idea what even happens at an elimination, only that afterwards, they’re missing a group member. Their confusion, and the way they look at Clock when their ringer just sorta… floats back onto their head drives home this feeling that they’re starting to distrust Clock a little more, or at least just be extremely confused at them. Rightfully so.
1:45 - [No Way fucking drowning] “Okay…. I can’t understand you. Here, how about this.” “Thank goodness… I-I’m breathing underwater??”
No Way being the only one to question when things don’t make sense again. Not even Wheel says anything, and Green is just . okay with this.
1:58 - “Woah, what’s wrong with you?” “I shouldn’t BE here, I didn’t even lose the last challenge!” “Why don’t you just leave then?-” “You don’t WANT me here??” “No! No! I didn’t say tha-”
Say it with me guys! NO WAY CARES A LOT ABOUT THEIR FRIENDS!!! They immediately notice that Wheel is absolutely fuming and asks what’s wrong, tries to provide a solution, but when Wheel takes it the wrong way, they instantly backpedal, trying to reassure him that they didn’t mean it that way. And then Tile interrupts by telling Wheel he’s a loser (BEING AN ASSHOLE AGAI-)
2:26 - “Fantastic, now there’s only 3 of us here again.” “Three?? Who’s missing?” “I don’t know, don’t ask me.” “I wasn’t.” “You just did.” “I- D- Clock, we’re missing Refill Station.”
Frustration at Green because of the misunderstanding.
First to point out Refill Station being missing. Again. Say it with me g- ok I’m done with that bit
Honorable mention to No Way falling backwards when Refill Station slams into the ground, suggesting they’re pretty clumsy I think.
I’m not time stamping this as a point since it doesn't really feel significant enough but when Clock mistakenly says Wheel got 0 votes at 3:57, No Way’s brow raises and they frown a little more, like they’re surprised at the 0 votes and possibly even worried. Y’all know what I’m gonna say at this point
4:25 - “The only one to not make it over 1,000 votes this time was Green, who only got 843” “Oh nooo.. I wasn’t expecting to get out so soon :(“ “Oh.. Hey! Maybe you might be able to come back later on.” “I-I don’t know.. That’s why I’ve been so worried, a part of me feels l-” “Huh? Green?-”
OH BOY OH BOY. I think this is the first time where we haven’t had a moment of the last safe contestant going “yay! I mean-” and I think that says something about No Way’s character. They’re most likely relieved they aren’t out of the game, but they know Green, their friend, is eliminated. So instead of celebrating their safety, they immediately try to reassure Green that maybe he can rejoin the show! It’s very obvious here that No Way has no idea what happens to eliminated contestants up until Green’s disappearance. They even call out for him, looking around as if he was still there. That is, until the radio catches their attention. Also the weird distorted music coming from the Radio is really off putting.
4:49 - “..Clock, what happened to Green?” “I already said earlier, I have no idea! Quite convenient that the eliminated contestants just disappear though!” “Just disap- You have no idea what’s going on here?!-”
Green’s elimination is a monumental part of No Way’s character development. 4 episodes in and they have finally learned what happens when someone is eliminated, and it’s terrifying in such a subtle way. Just like that, everything No Way assumed about the eliminations - about this contest - was swept away. Green just disappeared. Not a trace of him was left behind– nothing but that creepy vintage radio. And when they go to Clock, someone who they think is completely in control of this elimination, they’re met with an answer no one wants to hear. They don’t know. The contestants just disappear. And it’s here where No Way finally realizes that Clock isn’t as trustworthy as they originally thought. The start of the horrors for them, if you will.
5:35 - [Loud clattering sound] “What… just happened?”
No Way being the first to question the weird shit again. That’s all really
5:53 - “Hold on… teams?? But, Clock, what ever happened to-” “There’s no more teams! There’s no more teams.” “Yeah! Here are your teams for the challenge, and only this challenge!!”
Ok this might seem like nothing but hear me out. Look at No Way’s face during the ‘flashback’ part. They look curious, intrigued. Interested. Now look at their face during the more recent scene. They look sadder. Less energetic. Exhausted. It almost looks like they’re not even paying attention, still stuck on what happened with Green.
6:05 - “Nonono! This team will get a special visitor!” [GASP] “Please please plea-” [Samsung ringtone] “Aww man- Can I switch teams??”
They hate this guy (No Ways) (added this entirely because I like the way No Way says that last line. Scratches my brain good)
6:17 - “Okay!! You all have 30 seconds! “This again, I ended up coming up with the team name by accident last time, do you have any ideas?” “Uhhhh, Vase… Star…. Street sign….. …. Eheh…-” “It’s alright, we can come back to you. How about you?” “.......” “..Who is that?”
No Way’s head is no longer in the game. Before Vase starts talking, you can see No Way staring into the distance. Whether or not they’re staring specifically at something or not we don’t know, but they certainly are not paying attention. All of their energy and effort to compete from episode 1 is gone, and judging by the way they hang their head when Vase says they’ll come back to them, they feel bad about it. Like, they feel like they should put more effort in, if not just for the competition but for their team too.
Also I never noticed it but Vase rolls her eyes at them. That’s kinda mean ma’am :(
6:32 - “Here are your team names!” “Hm??” “Meet team [buzzing sound]” “This the best!” “That was not 30 seconds.”
No Way, again, sounds and looks so done here. They may have not been completely paying attention, but they know that absolutely wasn’t enough time and they are frustrated. Hashtag done with Clock fr. I’m so sorry
8:16 - [The Sun telling them a recipe. I am NOT typing allat] “Ohhnono, we’re overthinking it, we can just make some nice simple toast for Clock!” “We don’t really have a toaster around her- oh- ohhhh!”
Ok so two bits. No Way has the clipboard and paper again and is actively writing down the recipe The Sun is giving them. But then not even a second later, they didn't realize they could just use The Sun as a toaster. This is a good reminder of their intelligence, while also letting us know that, again, they aren’t completely in the moment. That or they were just so focused on the recipe that they actually didn’t even think of that. ADHD havin’ a-
9:33 - “I know for a fact I saw a store or something nearby, but whatever, we’ll just have to be quick, clock’s starting to look bore- Where Is The Bread.” “So like, I've heard that you needed your bread toasted and I uhhh sort of put it in that sun right there… sorry.” “Yea.” “AAGH-!! Nnoo! I am not gonna be losing a second time in a row like that, one second!” “Uhm..”
NO WAY HATES THIS GUY!! (No Ways). Their frustration grows, which sort of morphs its way into determination. Now that I really think about it, No Way has been a bit of a “challenge beast,” as Wheel would say. Also I think it’s kind of cute how every time No Way gets overly frustrated they put their hands on their head. I don’t know what you would call that but it’s something I’ve noticed.
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: Y’know before I started writing this, I always thought No Way’s character development started in 5:00 after Wheel’s elimination. Now I know I was extremely wrong actually. From here I think it’s very clear how their development is going. They aren’t as naive as before and they’ve lost a lot of that previous motivation and excitement for the show.
IT’S TIME FOR THE [5:00] - Fifty-Seven Tears Of The Star
0:39 - “Welp… Tile’s dead again..” “What?! Tile’s gone??” “Let’s go get ‘em back.” “I’ll do it!” “Huh?” [Refill Station slaps down a random fucking door] “Refill Station.”
Ok I know I keep saying this but No Way is so done. Normally I think they would still be worried about Tile, but they’ve either been desensitized to all the dying or they’re just too exhausted to care. I feel like this is further proven by the moment with Refill Station– the way they say his name in such an exasperated way before just turning and walking away.
1:02 - “NO! No… I just think.. We should look for Tile!” “...” “NO YOU’RE JUST SAYING THAT ‘CUZ YOU’RE SAFE!” “...”
Notice how No Way looks so disinterested during the first frame switch to them and Vase. They look like they aren’t even paying attention again, staring at the ground all exhausted. But then after Wheel yells at them, their attention is grabbed and they look concerned and confused, sharing a glance with Vase. I think this is once again them caring about their friend. I mean, Wheel is essentially yelling at nothing since neither No Way nor Vase even said anything in response. Is bro okay? (bro was not ok)
1:14 - “Hey Polka Dot, you didn’t tell me about this. What’s going on here?” “It popped up like 20 minutes ago. Why is everyone expecting me to know anyways??” “B-because… come on.”
The sass on this guy.
Jokes aside though, I think their friendship with Polka Dot is very important. In this moment, they don’t seem as eugh as before, and before they give her a little bit of sass, they try to find a good way to say it nicely. Also, they sound genuinely concerned in the first sentence here.
1:22 - “Fair point, but I seriously don’t know what this thing is.” “Have you tried- OUGH-”
Ok. This is a funny scene and makes me laugh every time. But I want to focus on No Way’s reaction here. And I’ll actually add a picture this time
Tumblr media
At first, No Way jumps a little, probably because a piano just came flying out of that thing and nearly hit them. But then they get this over exaggerated look of fear and concern on their face. I’ve said this a kajillion times before, but No Way genuinely cares a lot about their friends, no matter how uninterested and demotivated they might be. They are scared for Vase because they know how fragile she is and she just got hit with a grand piano. Though they somewhat immediately relax again when they find Vase is perfectly fine.
1:26 - “OWWHH?? Wh- who’s piano is this???” “Not mine, but hey! This is pretty cool, have you ever wanted to play piano?”
This is really important to me because this is almost like how No Way was with Green right before he was eliminated. Instead of thinking about the negative implications behind this piano just… appearing out of this weird portal, they think on the bright side of things. I notice they tend to do that a lot, almost like they’re the optimist in the group, almost like how Polka Dot is. There it is again- Polka Dot and No Way being similar to one another.
2:02 - “Clock brought me back, duh.” “Where IS Clock?”
This has nothing to do with No Way’s character development but on my rewatch before this one I realized you can see them fix themself in the background of this scene and I thought I’d share that.
2:24 - “I’m not even gonna ask.” “Clock! What happened???” “What?” “You’re green-” “Oh! I just took a little nap!!”
Once Again! No Way Is Being Caring And Friendly! Even though they’re kind of done with Clock’s shenaniganry they still act caring towards them! Though it is likely that they’ve kind of gotten over their doneness. Maybe spending time with friends (like Polka Dot and Vase) has helped them regain their footing again. I also think this is one of those “first to question when things are weird” moments, which I think is even more noticeable when you pair it with Vase’s “I’m not even gonna ask.”
6:02 - “You are the FINAL member left on our original team and I want you to know that I wish you luck!” “Oh! Thanks…”
I’ll get to Wheel’s actual elimination in a second, but I want to focus on No Way’s expressions as Wheel is talking to them. At first when Wheel comes up to them, they look a little surprised, like they weren’t expecting him to talk to them. And then when they realize what Wheel is saying is positive, they smile and thank him, with a little nervous hand behind their head. I like the detail of the little brow furrow as they thank Wheel, it makes it feel very sincere and genuine and like its genuinely special to them.
6:07 - “Soo, what now?” [Wheel starts to crack and cries out in pain] “What… is.. This?!-” “That’s not cool bruh.” “nonono… GO GO GO GO!!-”
Ah yes. The elimination. I’ve seen lots of people talk about this, specifically No Way’s reaction, but I’m going to do it again because I want to.
When Wheel starts to crack, No Way cringes and flinches back slightly. This is painful to watch- visceral and horrible in every way. Mind you, this is only the second elimination No Way has seen. This is just bad in every way, so much more aggressive than Green’s elimination just last episode. They are scared and worried for Wheel, and it’s fairly obvious that they hate seeing their friends hurt. Then, right before Wheel explodes, they reach out for him. They try to help, to find a way to console him despite the blistering pain shooting through him. Despite the fact they are scared, they still try to help. They care so much about their friends. While the others trying to run away, they stick by him until the end. But then they realize Wheel is about to literally explode and they back up a little, covering their face to prepare for the impact.
This is so subtle yet so impactful for them and their character development. It’s such a clear view into who they are just by the way they try to help their friend, even though there is nothing within their power that they could have done.
Also I know this isn’t about Tile but this is also more of Tile being EVIL because of the L he gives Wheel. Wtf bro
7:14 - “I’m not teaming with any of these randos.” “Really?”
I wanna note No Way’s expressions here (again). At first, before Tile says he isn’t gonna team with any of the original ITFT members, No Way almost looks like they were going to call out to him, probably to be like “hey! Since we can choose our teams this time, maybe we can team up!” But then after Tile says what he does, they look sad and maybe even a little bit surprised. Their expression makes me think that they might be wondering what they did wrong for Tile to randomly decide not to team with them. (this is somewhat influenced by the wiki implying that No Way still thinks they’re friends with Tile)
I also want to note something a little more silly: Refill Station literally falling to their knees at Tile’s remark and looking like he just killed their entire family
7:26 - “THERE ARE 34 OF US IN TOTAL, THAT SIMPLY DOES NOT ADD UP, AS 6x6, IT EQUALS 36.” “Wait, you’re right! You must be great at math!” “I AM A   CALCULATOR.”
I like this scene because it kind of contradicts what happens immediately after TI-30 comes up to them. When talking to TI-30, they’re smiling, probably because they think he’s cool. Them pointing out that he’s great at math leads me to believe they have a hard time with it (same). This scene also makes me think they have ADHD even more because they pointed out something obvious and then TI-30 gave a sarcastic (i don’t think that’s the right word, but it's similar to that) response and No Way did NOT pick up on it.
7:39 - “Mathematics?? I LOVE mathematics! That’s when I can collect friends!” “You collect friends in math class?” “No? What’s math class?” “Are you a FAKE MATH FAN???” “Pff, of course not! Check this out! One times one is one! One times two is two! One times three is three-”
Okay now this part- I know in the subtitles it doesn’t have any of what No Way “said” in it, but they do make a few sounds. I’ll get to those in a second, but I want to point out their expression when Whiteberry pulled them closer to herself; They look scared. I’m not entirely sure why, but to me it seems like it was because of the sudden and unwanted physical touch. Their face always confused me here though.
Anyway, moving on to the point I actually wanted to make- when Strawberry Milk asks Whiteberry if she is a fake math fan, you can hear No Way go “uh…” in the background. And then, when Whiteberry is listing off the timetables, you can hear them go “hm..” again and they furrow their brow a little. They are extremely unsure about Whiteberry and Strawberry Milk joining their team. They’re either assessing whether or not they will be useful (not likely, considering their character), or the two are generally just off putting to them. I think there is also the chance that they aren’t sure about teaming with people they haven’t met before, like they still really wish they could team up with their actual friends for some normalcy.
11:05 - “Hey… hey!” “huh?-” “You doin alright?” “Yeaa… it’s been a long day, this felt like the longest two minutes of my life. Mh- so… we just need one more person here?” “I’m… going to be here.” “Oh.”
ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT. This scene with Lava Cake is a culmination of everything that has happened to No Way, this moment of getting to just chill for a moment causing all of that exhaustion to creep up on them again, so much so that they fall asleep standing up. They even sound exhausted (props to Derpadon for the amazing voice acting btw), speaking slowly and yawning in the middle of their sentence. Writing wise, this is a perfect way to remind the viewers that all of this is happening in a SINGULAR DAY. I also like how Lava Cake wakes them up by just ramming into them considering his lack of arms. Also. The sound effect. Smile. And finally, their very minimal reaction to Xiru joining their team randomly. I don’t know what this means other than “they are exhausted” but it is funny to me
13:23 - [Lava Cake, Whiteberry, and Strawberry Milk get electrocuted] “AAAAAAAA!!” “NOOOO” “OHH MYY GOODNESS!! AAAAAaaaa!!” “Ohno!” “Keep climbing, stop sign. They. Will. Be fine.” “Ugh, right…”
THIS!!! This scene. No Way’s concern for people they barely even know and someone who isn’t even on their team– this is another one of those clear representations of who No Way is as a person, reaching out for the three of them even though they clearly couldn’t even reach them. And even when TI-30 tells them to keep climbing, they still look worried and maybe even a little conflicted about continuing to climb when they’re missing two of their teammates. Their tone even reflects this, and there’s almost a sense of urgency underneath too. I reckon they might be a little scared of being up for elimination now, especially with what they saw with Wheel.
16:15 - “Team Refill is on their way, I can throw you from here.” “wwOOAHH CALCULATOR- NO!” “It must be done.” “But-” “It must be done-” (cough) “It must be done. Trust me.” [gimmie that baby and I yeet it off the tower /ref]
This will get really long if I include the next part so I’m separating it. Anyways, No Way’s reaction to being thrown here is really important to me here. The way they tell TI-30 to not throw them makes it clear they don’t trust him, a STARK contrast to the way they were immediately trusting of Clock when she first showed up. Also, TI-30’s ambition here and the way he doesn’t even give No Way a chance to protest any further is almost like foreshadowing that he would be/is a “challenge beast.”
16:30 - “aaaaaaAAAAAAAAA- OUGH!” “wwwoahhhWOOAAHH woah… ooh.. Wh- what is this…??”
THE HORRORS! The existentialism! All bundled up in one little stop sign. I don’t really have any notes on this other than this being a catalyst for the way they act in 6:00 up until they Fucking Die. Seeing this weird, giant green thing in the sky, seeing Clock’s tail plugged into something that should not even exist is mindbreaking to them. It doesn’t make any sense– it should be literally impossible. But it’s there. It’s there and it shouldn’t be. And then when it comes unplugged? It just… disappears. Fades out of existence. “What the fuck did I just see??” - No Way, probably.
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: DETRIMENTAL EPISODE!!!! I think this is my favorite episode so far actually. It’s just so interesting?? And when the LORE really starts to kick up. Also it made me like No Way a lot more so !!! yippee. Smiles
IT’S TIME FOR THE [6:00] - Will You Ever Know?
5:27 - “You’ll need at least one of your team members to get to the other side of the planet to complete the challenge. The three teams that DON’T make-” “But I have to get back to the… Ughh… wait-” “No Way!! Hello!” “Uh.. Hi?”
Yeah so, No Way is 100% stuck on that Fucking Thing Up There. But they’ve known Clock for 6 hours now and know that they aren’t going to listen to them or even know what it is if they ask. And, once again, being unsure about Whiteberry. I also get the impression that they didn’t fully .. focus? On Whiteberry, because immediately after their short “uh.. Hi?” they turn to Clock to ask questions; getting to that now.
5:38 - “Uh- Clock, didn’t you say the challenge was to get to the other side of the planet?” “Yes!” “Aand we have how much time?” “17 minutes!” “What.” “Happy Valentine's Day!! You’re not REALLY gonna have to go that far at all! Check this out!” “Valentines Day..?-” “You ask WAY too many questions dude.”
No Way asking the right questions again. This is where them questioning everything becomes very important, and I think Tile commenting on it brings its importance to the viewers attention.
Honorary mention: funny flat “What” moment. These will never not make me laugh dawg
5:58 - “What… Are they doing…” “Looks like some sort of funny dance, I can do that too you know!”
Very minimal thing but No Way’s expressions are very telling of how they feel. First, with watching Clock literally fold the Fucking PLANET, they look. EXTREMELY confused and even a little bit disturbed. Nothing is making sense to them anymore, and I think they’re finally realizing that nothing ever made sense in the first place, ever since Clock showed up at least. And then when Refill Station starts dancing, I think it’s good to compare their expression with Polka Dot’s. Polka Dot looks at RF with like a… “Why are you like this?” look. Words are hard and I don’t exactly know how to describe her expression, but it’s mostly like a “What. Why. What is wrong with you.” Meanwhile, No Way looks at him with more confusion and a hint of worry compared to Polka Dot. To me, No Way looks like they’re thinking “How can you act like this when Clock is literally reforming the planet right in front of us. How can you just stand there and dance when all of this is happening?” Almost like how 57-Ball questioned their naivety.
6:33 - “WAIT! NO WAY!” “What??” “Hey it’s- it’s me, uh- Shrimpy, I think you should let me come along!” “Oh… Uh.. Why’s that?” “Because I remember you getting the farthest up Clock’s wire!” “Right. That… sure was strange.”
Splitting up this scene because it’s kinda long
The quick way No Way says “what?” almost sounds exasperated and surprised, almost like they were distracted or just not paying attention before Shrimpy called their name.
Their voice is very soft when they ask why Shrimpy thinks that, and they’re almost hesitant.
Focus on the way No Way responds when Shrimpy brings up the last challenge. Instead of being happy about winning, they say it was strange. And I don’t think they were talking about the fact they won was strange, though it is easy to think that at first glance. I believe they were referring to the fact that Clock's tail was plugged into the sky in the first place. Getting to the top of that wire was so mind-bending to them that they don’t even care enough to remember that it was even a challenge, judging by the way they say “right” at the start of their sentence. And even though this is affecting them so badly, they can’t even think of how to explain. More on that later.
6:45 - “So… maybe your prize for winning should be to have an extra team member!” “But.. you weren’t even on my team.. And uh.. Xiru got more votes than you.. If I remember correctly.” “Oh Xiru… he wouldn’t even want to go, right buddy?” “Bye.” “See?” “Ok fair point, let’s go.”
I think the more No Way loses that naivety from the beginning of the show, the more we see their more intelligent side. If this was still No Way from 1:00, They would have immediately agreed to letting Shrimpy join their team. But they didn’t. They asked Shrimpy to explain why twice, and they only finally agreed when Shrimpy gave them actual, proper reasons and even proved the second reason. There’s a few reasons why I think this change happened, but the biggest one is because they didn’t do that with Clock. They didn’t ask questions, and now their friends are disappearing and Wheel fucking exploded and they’re traumatized. Nothing is good anymore. They can’t afford to trust the wrong person again- they can’t afford to not question things anymore.
Honorary mention: Whiteberry making weird ass faces in the background of both of these timestamps. ITFT crew fr doing a little bit of anything
9:35 - “You could buy a zoo with all the doctor bills he paaaid!~” “Whiteberry, please! STOP- STOP SINGING. Stop singing, please.” “Why are you so stressed out anyways? What’s been going on?” “During the last challenge I… saw something. Something that- like- I- I don’t know, I- I can’t describe it, it feels like one of those things that like- you feel like you’re not supposed to see… y’know?”
Splitting this up again because it’s long.
Before I get to my main point with this quote, this is another moment of all the stress and exhaustion of the past 5 hours catching up with them. Whiteberry’s singing is grating to them because it’s making it hard to think. Reminder, they’ve likely been dead for a while, since Clock only brought them back when they announced the challenge. They haven’t had any time at all to even think about what they saw, and Whiteberry is making it even harder to think and that is frustrating to them. They need to understand- they want to understand whatever the hell that was because maybe it could explain all the weird stuff that’s been going on– maybe it would explain why Clock is even there in the first place.
This is where I elaborate more on my point of “And even though this is affecting them so badly, they can’t even think of how to explain,” because they say it themselves. They start their explanation off with a good foundation, but when they get to the part where they have to actually describe it, they can’t. They say something extremely vague, which Shrimpy takes completely wrong (or just doesn't take seriously because she’s stupid). So No Way has this… thing that they saw, that they don’t understand, but they can’t talk to anyone about it because they don’t even know how to explain it, no one they trust is around, and the two they are with are … kinda dumb. Looking at you Shrimpy.
Also, side note, I LOVE the surreal, almost ethereal yet foreboding music that plays as No Way explains what they saw, accompanied with the flashback of them falling being shrouded in green haze. It really adds a lot to the scene. The crew always has such great music choices
9:55 - “Well, yea, I get it. I see things like that all the time! Like that rock. Ooh, and that rock too! And… Ooh, this right here is the ultra rare SHINY rock! You only see them in…”
Ok, nothing too big here, but No Way’s deadpan look while Shrimpy is going off about rocks is very funny to me. I can feel the “Bruh.” from here.
12:46 - “I wonder what the others are up to?” [Oil Pastel goes flying over No Way, Shrimpy, and Whiteberry’s heads] “Oh– what was that?” …13:40 - [Forky screaming as he and Oil Pastel fly back over No Way, Shrimpy and Whiteberry’s heads] “No way, again?” “I think it was just a bird!” “Okay…”
Used two timestamps for this because I’m making the same point with them.
Focus on No Way’s tone and expression here, especially in their first little quote. They sound and look a little scared, so it’s probably safe to assume they’re on edge now. And then when Forky and Oil Pastel go flying past again, No Way is surprised again and a little concerned since that time there was screaming. And then when Shrimpy says they think it was a bird, they squint at her suspiciously, and also like “Are You Stupid?” I imagine they don’t say anything about it though because they just don’t have the energy.
14:49 - “Hey, woah! The Sun, what’s going on??” “I’m trying to find Oi- Toys… TOY STORY!!” “I mean… we might still have enough time, we can help you find them really quick.” “EEK!” “Should we follow you? Or…”
No Way is such a good friend, immediately offering to help The Sun look for OP and Forky the moment they can tell something is wrong despite the challenge. And when The Sun hides in the ground, they ask if they should just follow him. Granted, they didn’t realize The Sun was actually scared, but it happened so fast so I don’t blame them.
The point I’m trying to make here is that despite the challenge, despite the stress they’re under, they are still trying to care for their friends and help them where they can. Another very good representation of their character.
15:03 - “No Way…” “Huh? Yeah, what-” [GASP!] [Distorted noises] “DANCE TO THE MUSIC!” [No Way Go Bye Bye]
YET ANOTHER DETRIMENTAL MOMENT FOR NO WAY’S CHARACTER!!! YAAAY MORE TRAUMA– this is really all I have to say. Other than the fact they were completely distracted by The Sun to even remember they were hearing weird, creepy ass music earlier. Their head is so not in the game.
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: I REALIZED SO MANY PAINFUL THINGS THIS EPISODE. By so many I mean exactly one. In the Wheel analysis I mentioned earlier, Rocket mentioned how Wheel was constantly on edge and untrusting of Clock and paranoid about that day. Something bad was going to happen and holy fuck was he right. Here’s why I’m bringing this up. NO WAY IS DEALING WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT LISTENING TO WHEEL. At the start, Wheel was untrusting, scared, and defensive. No Way was naive, trusted Clock right off the bat, and happily obliged with whatever they said. They didnt listen to Wheel’s warnings, to Wheel’s protests and fear. And now they are paying the price. They are experiencing what Wheel was warning them about in its entirety. They’ve lost their whimsy, their passion, their excitement for this competition. Now they don’t know who to trust other than the original contestants, and their numbers are dwindling by the episode. They have no one to talk to, no one to turn to. Just like how Wheel was from the beginning. I Am In Active Pain. Anyway, next up: I finally explain why I think No Way and Polka Dot are so similar after about like 9,000 words.
IT’S TIME FOR THE [7:00] - Stop and Look. Realize.
3:07 - [Clock finally brings everyone who died last episode back]
Not much to add here other than this screenshot
Tumblr media
Yeah they felt that shit
3:14 - “Where’s Vase…?” “The elimination already happened, she got out.”
Part of this is something I didn’t notice until now, but anyway. Pay extremely close attention to No Way here. When they get revived, their immediate thought- the first thing they notice- is that Vase is missing, another person they were close with. They have one of those little stress lines under their eye and the tone they have is very clearly worry with a hint of dread. Like they know what the answer is, but they don’t want it to be true. And when Inky confirms it, their face drops slightly. First their brows raise in mild surprise when Inky says the elimination has already happened, and when he says Vase is gone, their brow furrows and their mouth hangs open slightly. They’re devastated. Another one of their friends, gone.
3:17 - “I don’t understand, we were walking through the tunnels in the challenge an-” [Fridge DJ plays music] “YOU. Am I the only one… who thinks he shouldn’t be here?” “Press the music button, or turn the dial to another station! [Fridge DJ plays music]
No Way’s mind is not only not in the game, but it’s also just. Scrambled, considering how fast they change topics here (from Vase to the last challenge). Fridge DJ literally murdering them has added yet another layer of stress to their already growing pile, and the fact Fridge DJ is still there makes it even worse. No Way's hesitance to even ask their question makes me think they’re scared to even ask it, like Fridge DJ might not like it and attack. It’s a fair assumption to make, given they don’t know Fridge DJ for anything other than the mindless killing spree he went on earlier. This is backed by the way they back away and tense up when FDJ comes right up to them, only to then look uncomfortable and confused as he does his little dance.
Some side notes about voice acting and sound design: I really like the way No Way says “YOU.” here, really shows how much they are affected by what Fridge DJ did. I also really like how you can hear a very faint and muffled “DANCE TO THE MUSIC!” before the week song starts and No Way turns around. Whether this is Fridge DJ actually saying that again or it’s just a representation of the trauma No Way endured is unsure, but it’s such a cool detail that I never noticed before. The more I think about it, the more I realize it is definitely the latter. The last thing they heard before being ripped in half is FDJ’s “DANCE TO THE MUSIC!” and it’s clear from their pose when Clock brings them back that it was a painful, agonizing experience. That’s why they’re so much more affected by this death compared to the previous two.
3:31 - “No Way, what do you mean? This is our… BEST FRIEND!” “I am so confused.” “Confused? I think it's time to shake up the game a little bit then!”
The expression work on No Way here is just amazing. They look so, so tired when they put their hand to their hand and close their eyes, a gesture which makes me think they have a headache. Or maybe they just do that because I have noticed they tend to touch their face a lot, who knows. Then when Clock pops up next to them, they get startled again before looking at Clock with such a nervous look. They’re tired, they miss their friends, it’s been 7 hours of non-stop challenge after challenge, they’re likely still processing and trying to figure out what that giant green thing in the sky was, and now they have to deal with Fridge DJ existing and Shrimpy and Whiteberry somehow not remembering anything he did??? It’s almost too much. And yet they feel trapped. Like they have to keep participating because they don’t know what Clock is actually capable of. Maybe they’re scared of making Clock mad.
3:57 - “Why… did they do that?” “Alright breh! Final five!” “Tile tha-” “Shut up, dude.”
I’M SHOOTING TILE IN THE DENNY’S PARKING LOT. I mean who said that
Jokes aside though, now that I’ve done this whole thing, this scene hits a lot harder. The look No Way had on their face before looking at Tile– I don’t know how to describe it. It almost feels like a silent “I don’t know” in response to Snapped Skateboard’s question. And then they get upset at what Tile says, about to correct him by saying that whatever the fuck Clock just did to Refill Station wasn’t an elimination. But then Tile interrupts them by blatantly telling them to shut up.
But No Way doesn’t get mad. They don’t even look that devastated. They just stare and watch Tile walk off. They get such a sad yet… reserved look on their face. It’s silent. Not a sound is made. And I think those 4 seconds of silence after Tile tells them to shut up is so impactful. It forces you to focus on the only movement on screen; the way No Way lets their arms fall to their sides again, the way their expression shifts into a look of resignation. I think they finally realized here that Tile isn’t friends with them anymore. Why this even happened, they don’t know. But it did. And it’s right in their face.
AND IT MAKES ME SO MAD BECAUSE WHAT THE FUCK TILE. THEY ALREADY HAVE SO MUCH GOING ON AND YOU JUST HAD TO TELL THEM TO SHUT UP LIKE THAT??? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU WHY ARE YOU EVIL. IM EXECUTING YOU NEXT TUESDAY WATCH YOUR FUCKING BACK YOU LITTLE YELLOW SHI
4:27 - “Whoever opens the box first will be the winner.” [accordion noise] “of the challenge.” “Okay, I mean, this should be easy, just give us the box, Clock.” [Clock starts to back away] “Clock…” [Cartoony aah running] “Clock- NO. COME BACK, CLOCK NO!-” [No Way sighs.] “1.5 meters of elevation. Great. er-” [Fridge DJ playing music] “You know what. I have something else I gotta take care of first.”
I love this scene. A lot. When Clock runs into the tree and No Way sighs in exasperation, the expression on their face is just … beautiful in the way that it displays so much emotion. Like, this is truly their boiling point. They are so exhausted. At first they look at TI-30 as he’s talking, but then they hear Fridge DJ’s music and now that is all they can hear. They look pissed now. They are so done with this damn toy and finally decide they need to do something about it. Fuck the challenge, that isn’t even the worst of their problems at this point.
Also, as a side note, I really love the way Oil Pastel encourages them here. It’s very sweet. I like to think this is partly because she’s like “yeah go get that murderer away from my partner”
5:50 - [Fridge DJ playing music] “Hey! Fridge DJ!” “I… Um… sorry, I mean Shrimpy, Whiteberry, how could just party with them like this? They killed all of us like an hour ago!” “I don’t remember that, I just think you’re just a party pooper!” “Yeah! Fridge DJ wouldn’t hurt a fly, he’s just so joyous!!” “That is correct!” “JOYOUUUUS!”
Ok a few things here. At first when I watched this scene, I thought No Way genuinely made the mistake of getting Fridge DJ’s attention first. But upon watching closer, I realize that’s not right at all. As they approach FDJ, they are PISSED and are clearly glaring right at them. That expression carries over to them yelling its name. But then when FDJ abruptly stops the music and looks at them, they freeze, and if you pause on time, they look scared, then uncomfortable, then they apologize and go to Shrimpy and Whiteberry. This isn’t an accidental mistake, this is No Way backing down last second because they are scared of Fridge DJ. Terrified, even. They had so much confidence when going up to her, but when she actually stopped and they had to actually face her, they froze. They chose to beat around the bush and try to talk some sense into Whiteberry and Shrimpy. They are TRAUMATIZED.
Also y’know it kind of makes sense that Shrimpy wouldn’t remember what happened BUT WHITEBERRY HAS GOT TO REMEMBER. SHE LITERALLY WITNESSED NO WAY GET RIPPED IN HALF and probably saw what remained of Shrimpy. But nah that didn’t happen what are you talking about. Yet No Way and Oil Pastel remember?? I mean I get No Way remembering, but that’s probably gotta do with trauma. I think I just don’t know enough about Oil Pastel to think of a reason why she would also remember.
EDIT AFTER AVICON READ THIS: Shrimpy is just stupid and Whiteberry doesn’t care. That’s why they’re gaslighting No Way. Oil Pastel is actually smart, that’s why he remembers LMAO.
6:09 - “Of course they would say that, they’re CLEARLY lying, but why?” [Oil Pastel nudges them. They gasp.] “I get it now! He’s gonna drown them in the river!” “Ohhh! A river! Let’s cross it!” “Yeah!” “THREE! Little birdies, sitting way up high,” “haha, nice!” “We gotta see Fridge DJ cross!” “No!” [No Way grabs onto Fridge DJ’s back] “Bye bye! Birdie bye bye!” “Woah… WOAH” “YAY!” “All right!”
Ok I know these quotes are getting REALLY long but BEAR WITH ME.
No Way DOES NOT UNDERSTAND. They don’t understand why Fridge DJ is doing this, they don’t understand why Fridge DJ did any of that stuff last episode, they don’t understand why Whiteberry and Shrimpy are just so totally okay with this dude– and at this point their mind is filling in blanks. Like I mentioned before, all they know about Fridge DJ is from its random murder spree from the water damage, but they don’t know that was just water damage, so they jump to conclusions. And when they make the conclusion about the river, they immediately try to drag Fridge DJ into the river themself in a desperate act to try and “save” Whiteberry and Shrimpy. They’re paranoid. They are paranoid that people are going to get hurt again because of FDJ. Y’know who else was paranoid? Wheel. FULL FUCKING CIRCLE IM GONNA THROW U-
6:31 - “Hide and seek!” “I see you!” “Aww, I’ll find a better hiding spot next time!” “I was hiding here too!” [Fridge DJ laughs and then honks] “Can you name 57 vegetables that start with the letter J? We can!” “wuh- NO NO AA-”
This is really important to me. Before FDJ shows up in the bush No Way and Oil Pastel are hiding in, No Way is glaring HARD, angrily, almost confidently. But then the moment FDJ starts speaking directly next to them, their expression immediately shifts to FEAR. And then they panic and literally run away. It’s a really funny scene if you’re watching it surface level, but when you dive deep, this is literally trauma at its finest. Notice how No Way is hiding in the bush, yet I bet they’ve somehow convinced themself that it’s doing something. Finding excuses to hide away from FDJ. They feel very non-confrontational, or maybe it’s just fueled by fear. (I would say cowardice but that’s mean)
6:43 - “Let’s play tag!” “Yeah!!” “Agh, no… They’re gonna get away!” “No.” [What the fuck john wick bullshit is this– WHY DID NO WAY GET HIT WITH A BASEBALL] “Oh.. that was weird… Why’d you do that?” [Whiteberry and Shrimpy laughing] “This is so pointless.”
No Way is so over this. They’re So Fucking Over This. After everything that happened, Shrimpy and Whiteberry just do not care, no matter what they or Oil Pastel do, they Do Not Care. And the crazy part is, after this scene, we just. Don’t see them again. They literally gave up. They just stopped. That was it. Their “this is so pointless” was literally an admission of defeat. The very culmination of the past 6, 7 hours of stress has finally got to them. And mind you, all of the really bad trauma happened within like. 2 hours if we’re excluding witnessing Green’s elimination. That’s. That’s a lot to go through in that short amount of time.
7:12 - “Hey Polka Dot, did you hear the challenge?” “Yep.” “So, are we gonna do it?” “Nnnnno. Because I can’t stand this thing Clock is doing! It was fun at first but it’s been nonstop hours of these “challenges.” My friends are disappearing one-by-one, I’m just… upset! That I can’t do anything about it and I have nowhere else to go.”
FINALLY. I HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN TO WHERE I WILL ELABORATE ON THIS. Throughout the series, Polka Dot has gone through the same development just a little bit later and a little bit differently. She went from using her polkadot portals willy-nilly, to warning Wind Up Toy that going in them is dangerous. She went from opting to using her abstracted form on challenges where it’s technically cheating to not even trying, and she even remarks “I had a feeling this was gonna happen” when Clock pulls their “No Flyers Allowed!” thing with The Sun. She’s clearly had less energy as the episodes went on– from naive and excitable to mellow and quiet, questioning things sometimes – just like No Way. And when things came to a head in 6:00 and 7:00, she became jaded, done with the games. She rushes along the elimination and doesn’t even care that Vase just. Exploded, even if she was friends with her or not.
While she and No Way are very similar, they have one very important difference. Polka Dot actually had someone to talk to. She had someone in her corner, even when all of her original friends were gone. No Way has no one. They tried to talk to Shrimpy, but Shrimpy just … was Shrimpy. Shrimpy and Whiteberry wouldn’t even listen to them. Tile hates them for some fucking reason. Vase is gone. 57-Ball is gone. Wheel is gone.
15:59 - [Voting screen]
Ok this isn’t important but look at No Way’s sad little face on the voting screen. Now compare it to their intrigued, curious, and a little bit surprised face on 3:00’s voting screen. I feel like this is such a good comparison to make when you’re thinking about their character development.
END OF EPISODE THOUGHTS: No Way is really well written this episode. They don’t have any Funny Haha moments (other than deadpan faces at comedic times.) and are just. Serious. Their interactions with Fridge DJ and the way they acted around Shrimpy and Whiteberry were great ways to show how a traumatic event like getting Ripped In Half can affect a person.
CONCLUSION:
No Way arguably has gone through the most amount of character development in the series. They start it off in a good place; friendly, trusting, seeing the good in others, caring about their friends. But as time goes on, more and more things start to happen. And now, they are completely different. They’re paranoid and scared and worried, and their mind is a mess. They have no one to turn to or talk to, so they have to deal with all of this stress on their own. And that’s.. That’s not great. Especially with all of this happening in a SINGULAR DAY.
Ok. That’s all I had to say. This whole thing made me even less normal about No Way than when I started. Thank you for reading this fucking thing ??? hope you liked it. Goodbye forever(/j)

For the radio station video with Vil, Rook, and Epel's VAs, would you possibly be willing to post a transcript/translation? I tried to watch it but it is not available in my country :( is there somewhere else I would be able to watch it? I am struggling to find it, very sorry if this is a bother!!
Hello hello!! Certainly! 🥳 Here is a summarized transcript!
Tumblr media
0:00 - 2:18
Begins with the voice cast introducing themselves! Vil’s Aiba (👑), Epel’s Tsuchiya (🍎) and Rook’s Itokawa (🏹)  all say “Pom pom!” after their self introductions, confusing Deuce’s Kobayashi (♠️).
🍎 explains that himself and 👑 came up with "Pom pom" during their video together introducing the Twst Exhibition (since removed from YouTube) but 👑 says that 🍎 just suddenly started doing it. The group also did it together during Twst Fes, and decide it is basically official now (there is a hand gesture, too), encouraging others to do it as well.
2:19 - 3:34
♠️ points out that 👑 was on the show in February, appearing as a special guest in an episode hosted by Jack’s Ban, so this is his second time this year while it is 🍎 and 🏹's first time appearing.
♠️ asks if 🍎 and 🏹 have appeared together representing Twst since Twst Fes in 2023 and they say no, they haven’t met since Twst Fes. They say they don’t really overlap despite how all three Pomefiore members are active in musical theater, none of them meeting since Twst Fes.
Tumblr media
(Left to right: Epel's Tsuchiya, Vil's Aiba, Rook's Itokawa at Twst Fes)
3:35 - 6:22
The “opening talk” segment of the show! This is a recurring segment where the host/guests of the episode answer a question that was asked by the host/guests of the previous episode.
This month’s question, set by Ruggie’s Ichikawa (🍩), Idia’s Uchiyama (💀) and Ortho’s Aoi (🤖), is: “Are you the type to plan out details in advance when you take a trip, or the type to just go with the flow once you arrive?” 🍩 said last month he is the type to make plans, while 💀and 🤖 both said they prefer going with someone else who has made plans.
Tumblr media
👑 says he likes traveling, 🏹 says that 🍎 seems like he enjoys to travel and 🍎 says yes, he will shortly be taking a trip to Mt. Fuji.
🍎 says he makes plans, but just checking things off a list is boring, so after arriving in a place he will prioritize the things he is most interested in.
♠️ says he is the same: he will decide to travel to Osaka, for example, but not decide where he will have dinner in advance, preferring to set a vague plan involving places he wants to go and then going with the flow.
👑 says that if he is traveling with someone who wants to make the decisions of what to do on a trip, he will gladly follow along and leave it to them.
🏹 says that he is the type that likes to make restaurant reservations in advance. He doesn’t like situations like arriving at a restaurant, being turned away because they're full, then going to another restaurant and getting turned away again, etc. He doesn’t like waiting in lines. He says he is willing to wait up to 9 minutes but that is his limit. 🍎 asks if he is never late anywhere and 🏹 says he can’t handle being late. If he is meeting a friend somewhere and his friend is running late, he’ll get annoyed.
🍎: “I’ll take note of that.”
6:23 - 10:48
Time for the letter segment! This is also a recurring segment for Twst radio, where they read aloud letters from fans and answer their questions. The first letter-writer says they are a Vil oshi, and they like how he is so unshakeable in his convictions and demands. They ask if the host/guests have anything like that.
👑 says he might not have any. ♠️ rephrases the question, asking if maybe they have things that they absolutely must have with them when they stay overnight in hotels or go on trips, for example. 👑 says he is impressed by how Vil is so unmovable on certain things, but he is the exact opposite. He does not have any fixed routines and is flexible.
Tumblr media
🍎 says that his biggest demand for himself might be to not make any demands, and that he wants to be flexible at all times.
🏹 says that as a theater actor he has to be able to adapt to new situations and people all the time, so his only unshakeable point is time management. He and his manager were stressing today, getting stuck in traffic and thinking they might be late.
♠️ suspects there may be more if they dig deeper and asks if 🏹 is okay with people borrowing his things without asking, like in dressing rooms. 🏹 says that has happened to him before and it made him really mad.
10:49 - 14:40
🍎 reads the next letter, asking about memories that the cast have from culture fairs at school.
Tumblr media
🏹 says he was a class leader in his third year of high school, and that is his strongest memory: getting his classmates all together and working out what they would do for the culture fair and what their strategies would be for the sports festival. He says he just thought of another memory: at his school the third-year students would hold what they called “pageants,” which were like skits, and his class did the theme of “What if Snow White and Cinderella switched places?,” and he played the role of Cinderella. ♠️ comments that he was predestined for Twst.
👑 says at his school people would come together in the gym during the culture festival for something of a talent show, with each class showing what they could do. His class created a haunted house for the festival but their talent show entry was a dance, and he was both one of the four dancers and the choreographer. 🍎 calls him Vil-sama.
Tumblr media
🍎 says his class also did a haunted house, but he’d thought it sounded boring to be one of the monsters or someone on the inside so he took the role that no one wanted: being in charge of the reception desk, making sure people lined up properly, etc. He would talk to people in line about where they came from, whose family they were, etc., and enjoyed the communication.
♠️ says he was in a band in high school, and they performed in the gym for the culture fair, with him on vocals and guitar.
14:41 - 18:03
🏹 reads the last letter, where someone asks if there is a place they absolutely want to visit, or something they absolutely want to be able to experience at some point in their life.
♠️ says he wants to see the northern lights. He has a friend who was able to see them, and told him that if you go in Alaska you are able to ride a sled pulled by sled dogs.
🍎 says he wants to climb Mt. Fuji.
🏹 says he loves basketball, so he would like to be able to watch a basketball match at the olympics where Japan is competing. That is his dream.
Tumblr media
👑 says he wants to spend the New Year in Hawaii someday, like celebrities do. ♠️ says the three should all go to Hawaii together. 🏹says he’ll be the timekeeper.
18:04 - 37:28
Next segment is discussing Pomefiore.
1) Impressions of Vil
🍎 Vil-sama is beautiful. You have to do what he says.
♠️ That’s not Epel speaking, it’s you?
🍎 It is great how different he is from Aiba (Vil’s VA).
👑 Vil is very serious about beauty, has a high level of professionalism, there are a lot of things that can be learned from him, like lifestyle. 👑 says that he understands Vil’s seriousness about his job. He is strict to others, which his VA says he is not, but says he wants to learn from Vil’s good points and improve as an actor.
Tumblr media
2) Impressions of Epel
🍎 says that Epel’s cuteness level has increased for him during the game, and he thinks he has become cuter, too, as a result.
♠️ Don’t say that about yourself!
👑 says his initial impression was of how cute Epel is, and he is so small, and he likes the difference between his appearance and how he is inside.
🏹 says that Epel is the Twst character with whom he empathizes the most, as he is also on the small side but wants to be viewed as strong.
3) Impressions of Rook
🍎 says he couldn’t figure Rook out at first, but now he sees him as a very deep character. And he finds it curious that Rook is voiced by Itokawa. ♠️ agrees, saying that he can see 🍎 and 👑 voicing Epel and Vil, but he can’t imagine 🏹 voicing Rook.
👑 says he thinks Rook is odd, and his otaku side is interesting, and he has a lot of depth. We still do not know the true Rook, and it seems like there is more to see.
🏹 agrees that he is odd and difficult to read, you cannot tell what he is thinking, and that’s what makes him fun to voice, like a jack in the box.
Tumblr media
4) About voicing Vil
👑 says he is difficult to voice and he struggles every time. Despite how much voice work he’s done by now when he does new recordings for Vil it is always a storm of retakes. Vil has a lot of nuance, and 👑 says he hasn’t managed to pin down exactly what is the perfect Vil voice yet. And the character is always evolving so he is always practicing a lot, and it is very difficult.
⚠️Book 7 Spoilers⚠️
♠️ asks about the newest chapter of the main story.
👑 says he portrayed Vil with a worse personality and an even stronger attachment to beauty, increasing his desires.
⚠️Spoilers End⚠️
5) About voicing Epel
🍎 says that his approach for Epel has evolved as the character has grown in things like events. The foundation at the start was the awkwardness of Epel's situation with his being forced into a cute role that he didn’t fit and didn’t want. 🍎’s focus was on portraying Epel's discomfort. As the game progresses in events and things Epel's character is developing more depth. While cuteness is still his core trait it is becoming more nuanced with fewer instances of Epel breaking character. This gradual change involves 🍎 refining his portrayal, moving from having to emphasize Epel’s awkwardness to exploring more depth while still retaining his charm.
Tumblr media
♠️ asks if 🍎 struggled with Epel’s accent at first and 🍎 says he didn’t, as he just went along with his own original dialect. There were some difficult parts sometimes but now he thinks he has gotten used to it.
⚠️Book 7 Spoilers⚠️
🏹 mentions Epel’s appearance in Book 7 and 🍎 says that that was a bit of a struggle to record. There is a line where Epel says one of Vil’s lines from Book 5, which has become a popular point with fans. 🍎says that at first he said it just naturally as Epel would, but staff asked him to say it like Vil does, and he realized how difficult it is to portray Vil. He said in that moment he realized he will never become Vil.
⚠️Spoilers End⚠️
6) About voicing Rook
🏹 says he has finally gotten used to voicing Rook. He struggled with Rook’s long monologues as he couldn’t figure out when to take breaths, but now he has finally come to think of Rook as 100% fun to voice.
Tumblr media
⚠️Book 7 Spoilers⚠️
🏹 says the Book 7 recording was very fun. ♠️ asks if voicing Rook when he is speaking quickly isn’t difficult, and 🏹 says it was, and he kept overdoing it. He says he was able to hear the sound production staff laughing.
⚠️Spoilers End⚠️
7) About the Main Story
Book 5: 🍎 says he was uncertain how loud he was meant to go for Epel’s yelling scenes. The staff prepared a volume gauge for him as a guide for how loud he needed to go to match how loud ♠️ had gone, as they needed to be at the same level.
He had been worried that ♠️ would have had more power in his yelling. ♠️ says that they recorded separately, but there were instances where they were able to listen to recordings of each other’s voices as they recorded themselves.
Tumblr media
Book 6: On Vil becoming old at the end, ♠️ brings up how 👑 shared during Twst Fes that he recorded two versions for Vil, one with a female voice and one with a male voice. He says that everyone in the studio laughed at his female-voice version of Vil and he thought he’d done well, but then they used the male voice in the game.
⚠️Book 7 Spoilers⚠️
Book 7: 👑 says that dream Epel made him laugh. ♠️ says that 🍎 has gotten more muscled and 🍎 says that no, he has just gained weight. ♠️ says that since 🍎 has such a cute face, if he works out a lot he might turn into dream Epel.
⚠️Spoilers End⚠️
37:29 - 40:06
A recurring segment where they review a schedule of upcoming events. The announcements of the Nightmare Before Christmas event, Jack’s Birthday, Trey’s birthday.
40:07 - 44:34
Review of the episode: everyone says they had fun and thank you, etc.
They set the “opening talk” for the next episode as “Halloween memories.” 🍎 says he has one as an example: when he was in high school it was about 5 years before Halloween started to become popular in Japan, and he and his friends dressed up and went to Shibuya to hang out, a tradition that became so popular that it was banned in 2023 due to safety concerns. ♠️ says that 🍎 must have been the founder of the tradition.

“That’s when Jared came back onstage. Apparently he’d been mainlining Skittles backstage, didn’t bring any out for Jensen. They talked quietly to each other for a moment out of mike pickup and joked a bit. Jensen said that they speak in code.” – IG
“Jared reappeared in that moment, bragging “But not as good as Jared plays Sam!”” – B
“Somewhere around this, Jared came back out, and he was EATING SKITTLES (which totally made me think of him offering to buy Papa Ackles Skittles at the AFGM intermission ;)), and didn’t bring any for Jensen. I was ALREADY IN LOVE WITH THEM. AGAIN. He and Jensen were talking really quietly to each other for a minute (Basketball scores, maybe? Can someone who was sitting closer confirm this?), and then they finished, and Jensen laughed and told us that they speak in code. Which, really, I would NOT doubt–they are just SO attuned to each other, it’s fantastic.” – S
J2’s Panel starts.

Jensen: Skittles, that’s what you got?
Jared: (placing his hair on stage) Yes, sir.
Jensen: Yeah? Bring me anything?
Jared: Nope. (?All me?). (sits down)
Jensen: Of course not. Jerk. (audience laughs)
Jared: I did see (?Tigers win the first?) (Jensen: What?) from Texas (?to Utah?).
Jensen: No.
Jared: (?) half-quarter (?)
Jensen: You kidding?
Jared: Yeah, (?borrow talked into it?) (flips hair) and I wanted to whoever said- Yep.
Jensen: (to audience) Sorry, we’re speaking in code. Supernatural code.
Jared: (?Purple Michael?) dishwasher.
Jensen: (to Jared) You’re kidding? (Jared: [nods smirking] mhmm.) (dramatically to audience) It’s unbelievable. (Jared laughs. Audience giggles) Um..
◘Jensen LA SPN convention-21 J2 Panel 01-07 by DW&DW◘
Jared: [off mic] (?Where were you?)
Jensen: (to Jared) Where was I? (Jared nods) I was right in the middle of- of (gestures to audience) having everybody tell me how great I was. (audience screams, cheers, and claps)
Jared: [off mic] (?Yeah, bullshit.?) (to audience) Well done, guys. Thanks. I know you didn’t want to, but when I asked you earlier, (audience chuckles) I- I knew you would do it for me. And-
Jensen: But now they’re gonna have to go back to putting on their fake faces for you. (audience laughs)
Jared: I heard personally- (laughs)
(turns to fan on the his right) Hello.
•(0:48 BBS, 0:28 DW)- LA08J2;Q1a- Late Happy Birthday (Jensen)
Jensen: Hi.
Fan: Hi. (?)
Jensen: Now you got both of us.
Fan: Hi. (?I’m a girl?). Hi.
Jared: [nods] that’s right.
Jensen: So, watch what you say, because we might go off.
Jared: (laughs) Nothing good about Jensen please. (audience laughs)
Fan: Hi, Jensen. Happy late birthday.
Jensen: (nod) Hey, hey, yeah-hah!
Jared: (rolls his eyes and mouths while flinging his hand up) Oh my god. (Waves at fan) Hi, I’m here by the way. (audience laughs) (waves his hands sarcastically) Jensen’s here. (dramatically flings his coat closed)
Fan: (to Jared) I said hi to you earlier. (?So, don’t start?) now.
Jared hides his face in his coat. The audience laughs and then aw’s.
Jared: (to audience aws, nods) Okay. Y’all make me feel better (?at the end?). (smiles)
Jensen pumps his eyebrows and then gives the audience a thumbs up.
Fan: Anyway.
The audience laughs. But Jared, open mouth shocked, throws a hand up.
Jensen: Anyway, moving on.
Jared: (gestures to fan) There she goes again. (audience laughs)
•(1:17 BBS, 0:57 DW)- LA08J2;Q1b- 2x21 vs 3x11; Best Death
Fan: (laughs) I have a question. (Jensen: Yes.) Okay. After watching “All Hell Breaks Loose” and “Mystery Spot” you’ve both, you know, died so wonderfully. (audience laughs) Um, so I was wondering, who do think did the best death scene? Who died best? (audience oo’s)
Jared: (turns to Jensen) (?Who would be-?)
Jensen: (to fan) (makes a face) Me. (flips up hand) (audience and Jared laugh)
Fan: You had more practice- (Jared: He had more chances.) He did. Yours was a little more (?).
Jensen: I do love- I do love “Mystery Spot,” because it was such a fun episode for me. Because I just didn’t care. (audience chuckles) ‘Cause I was just dying all the time. (thumbs to Jared) Poor Jared, like, is freaking out the whole episode. (Jared laughs) He’s like, you know, getting emotional and I’m like, “Hey, buddy! Wake up! Let’s go!” (audience laughs)
Love those episodes.
Jared: (off mic) Yeah, that’s right.
•(1:57 BBS, 1:37 DW)- LA08J2;Q1c- Thoughts on Thirty (Jensen)
Fan: How does it feel to be thirty now?
Jensen: Fantastic. (Fan: Good.) (audience cheers and claps) (nods) It’s amazing.. it’s so much better in your thirties.
Some of the audience yeah’s. Jensen then pats Jared’s knee. Jared and the audience laugh. Then Jared makes a pouting face at Jensen.
Jared: My-
Jensen: (to Jared) You’ll get there one day. (Jared laughs)
Jared: I hope so.
Fan: Thank you for coming, guys.
Jensen: Thank you. (turns to his left)
Jared: Thank you. Hi.
•(1:57 DW)- LA08J2;Q2a- 3x01; Seventh Demon’s outcome
Fan: Hi. I’m Chris. (Jensen: Hey, Chris.) Uh, this question is for.. Jensen, (Jared throw his hands up) but it could be for both.
◘Jensen and Jared in LA: questions about Magnificent Seven by BabyBlueSteel◘

Jensen: Yes and none. (audience laughs and oo’s. Jared laughs.)
Jared: I think (looks at Jensen) we do all of our own fight scenes but they’re also (looks at fan) by.. stunt.. uh, actors who.. do the more intense.. part of the fight scene.
Jensen: You know, like- like, when you see one of us, you know, flying into a bookshelf, or, (Jared: [nods] Yep.) you know, crash into a table (?or something?) (Jared: [nods and points to himself] (?that’s me?).), (nods and points to himself) that’s me. (audience yeah’s and laughs. Jared laugh) Umm.
No. They- they don’t- they don’t nes- they don’t even allow us to do it, just for insurance purposes. So, that’s when the stunt guys come on. And that’s why I say, you know, (looks at Jared and gestures to them both) we basically run, jump, and fall down. And those guys do the actual stunts.
Uhh, a lot of the hand to hand- hand to hand combat stuff is- is.. that’s us. And, you know, we’ll go over it that morning or the day before.. (Jared: Right.) and just kind of get a feel for it. And, you know.. we do that pretty quick.
Jared: (to fan) In some of the fight scenes we have some preparation. The first one that was he against I in “Skin” (Jensen: I loathed.) in season seven- (looks briefly at Jensen) Yeah, we had to- We came out on the weekends and we trained with this, uhm.. (looks at Jensen) uh…
Jensen: Well, no. The first one (points to Jared) would’ve been the “Pilot” when we first (gestures) see each other.
◘LA Supernatural Con: J&J's favorite weapons and more! by wfsarah◘

But, since then it’s more- Since we have the basics, you sort of block it out (Jensen nods) and then you kind of rough it in. And you do it kind of half speed. And then the stunt guys get in and (swipes hand) tear the place up.
Jensen: You know, the more you do- uh, and, we’ve done it a lot. So, the- the more you do it kind of the easier it becomes every time there is a fight scene. So, it’s like.. preparation becomes less and less and less. (shrugs) But you can still get the performance out of it.

Jensen: Would have to be half- a half hour sitcom. Uh, I did- I did a show. It’s like the first thing that I did when I moved to LA. It was, uh, a show called, “Mr. Rhodes.” And it was a half-hour sitcom on ABC.
But, the great thing is.. you-you rehearse all week.. and then you preform in front of a live audience. So, it’s basically the best of both worlds. You get TV and you get, you know, uh, theatre. Um, so you get that-that kind of immediate, uh, gratification from an audience, but you also have the ability to go back and redo it if it messes up.

And they’re going, “It’s a-“ you know, “It’s a demon on fire and smoke.” And you’re going, “Ahh.” You know? (audience laughs) Like, you don’t know what to do.
But, there’s been a learning curve (Jensen nods) of.. filming it and remembering how you feel in the scene on screen-
Fan: Is it like following it across- Do they like have like a pole? Do they have something-
Jared: Sometimes. (Jensen nods) Every now and again they’ll have, um, a-a tennis ball at the end of a pole. Uhm, and they’ll sort of run it around. Otherwise, uhm.. you know, you’ll- your eyes will be here (gestures off to his left) then they’ll have, “Okay,” it goes to the next part and you’ll have to look at the next part.
Uhm.. but a lot of times luckily.. they’ll.. have us.. sync it up. You know? Because we get- we get a chance to do it (cycle gesture) over and over and over again. So, I think rarely we probably get it right the first time. But, we can just do just a series of, like, you start there. Go to the next one. Go all the way there and back, you know?

In IMTOD, when the reaper was hovering over the hospital bed, Jensen was really staring at a sweaty grip with a light on a pole for the shiny reaper lighting effect. They prefer doing it in shooting, when they have something to look at even if it's a tennis ball, rather than in post, when they might have to stare at nothing.” – IG

•(0:10 DW)- LA08J2;Q9a- 3x08; Product Placement; Creative Control
Fan: Um, I was just wondering if the Funyuns and, like, the Zagnut candy bars if those were written into the script or were those stuff that you guys liked, and so that’s why they got them or?
Jensen: (to Jared) They were written into the script, weren’t they?
Jared: Yeah, (Jensen: [nods] Yeah.) I never had a Zagnuts. I-I love Funyuns. (audience laughs)
Jensen: Yeah. (nods to fan) They-they- that’s a- that was a writing- a writing call. (Fan: Thanks.) Yeah.
Jared: Also they- once again, there are many factors like.. you can’t just- uh, they must also have some sort of deal or Funyuns says (?)-
Jensen: Got to get (?airline nuts?).
Fan: Yeah.
Jared: You can’t just throw Coca-Cola and Reese’s pieces and stuff and go like, “Okay, look, here’s your M&M’s.” And M&M’s is going, “Uh, we didn’t tell you, you could use our M&M’s.” So, I guess they went out to Funyuns and had to get approve and stuff like that.
Jensen: Well, they- they write what-
Jared: It’s probably a personal favorite of mine.
Jensen: They write what they want and then they see if they can get that. And if it’s just, you know, the- uh, if it’s too difficult then they might change it to something else. But, I can’t imagine Funyuns and, uh, were too hard to get, yeah. (shrugs) So. (pumps eyebrows at audience) (audience laughs)
Jared: It’s probably like, whoever wrote it probably really loves it, you know? It’s like all the characters really have a different, uhm- in different small (?towns?), like, you know, uhhh- Who was- What was the name of- in Croatoan, um.. Bargus or something like that. Fan: So, um, this is about getting into character of Dean. Is there a certain facet of Dean’s personality that’s hardest for you to portray on screen? And on top of that, is there a certain side of Dean that’s your most favorite to play?
Jensen: Uhh, I’d say the most difficult is just his affection towards his brother. (Jared laughs. audience laughs, oo’s, and aw’s) (shakes head) (Jared pouts) I struggle with it daily. (audience laughs and aws. Jared laughs) (smiles) Uh, no.
It- um.. I don’t know. I mean, when- when you- when you play a character, uh, as- as much and as intensely as-as we do it-it-it becomes very, euh.. natural, um, to.. you know, feel or know what- how he would react or what he might do in a certain situation. (Jared nods)
Um, you know, the emotional stuff is always tough. And that’s tough for both- Uh, (Jared waves at the audience) (turns to Jared) (Jared nods to Jensen) I-I don’t know. (to fan) I think that’s tough for playing any character. Uhm, to-to, you know, figure out-

You know, now- I mean, back then you had to like (points to his head) think about something that would really get you worked up. But, know it’s like, you know, we know these characters so well, and we, you know, we know each other so well that we can just use each other to-to- to get, you know- to get where we need to be. So.

Fan: And, um, have either of you ever thought of maybe trying out, you know, directing an episode or helping to direct an episode or directing, you know, something that you guys enjoy or look forward to maybe doing in the future?
Jensen: (looks at Jared then back at fan) Um, it’s something I’m- I’m interested in. Um, Iii- I know that it’s, uh, you know- It’s- it’s very difficult for.. (smacks lips) our show specifically (Jared: [nods] [off mic] yeah.) to allow one of us to direct an episode. Simply because they can’t lighten our, um- you know, our load. As- as far as the ac- the acting work goes.
Um, you know, you have, uh, you know, like, uh, I’m going to use “Smallville” as an example, because Tom’s a friend of ours. And-and he’s directed a few episodes and.. it’s much easier for him because he’s got cast of, you know, nine or ten. (Jared: [nods] [off mic] Yeah.) So, they can write heavy.. other characters and lighten his load the- the previous shows so that he can prep for the next episode. And then lighten his load on the-the episode that he’s directing, so that he can concentrate on directing.
(shakes head) It’s just.. not- it’s just not that doable for our show. So, um- You know, is it- is it doable at all? I-I- probably, ‘cause you know. Will it happen? (shrugs) Depends. Depends on if the writers are willing to, you know.. go the extra mile and make it- you know, make it feasible for us. (nods)

Jared: Yeah, I thought it was fun. I knew it was gonna be.. um, really funny sequence, because reading the script I was laughing out loud. You know, lot of times when I read the script I’ll kind of go, “huh,” you know? (Jensen smiles) Or, “Oh, that’s going to be funny.”
But, I was reading the script and just laughing. I was like, “Man, even I can’t mess this up.” (chuckles) (audience laughs) Because I was, “Alright, let’s go at it.” It was- It was a- it was a lot of fun. (turns to Jensen) (Jensen nods)

•(2:23 DW, 0:45 BBS)- LA08J2;Q11b- 3x10; ACT FOUR, INT. MOTEL ROOM; DREAM; thoughts on yelling at your double; Acting Challenges (Jensen)

Jared: mhm. (nods then snorts and then leans back) (audience giggles)
Fan: Um, in- I forgot the name of the episode. W-Where you guys went through the- uh, like, Bobby’s dream, like the (?living room?)- (Jared: Dream a Little Dream?) (Jensen gestures to the audience. Audience answers “Dream a Little Dream”) “Dream a Little Dream,” yes. (audience laughs. Jensen smirks.)
Um, what was it like yelling at yourself? Like, you enjoy- like, did you enjoy that (?acid trip?)-
Jensen: That was a really, really hard scene, umm, I’m being serious. That-the-the- the director, uh, I love to death, his name is Steve Boyum. Um.. you know, he had- he had somethings in mind they wanted to do during that scene. And, um, you know, when you’re dealing with a television schedule sometimes it doesn’t always allow for the (hand quote) artistic shot to be done, because you got to get your basics. I mean, you gotta, you know, essentially cover your ass otherwise your-your- your gonna, you know? The network is gonna come down on you.
So, ee- doing that, you know, I had to play, um, I had to play one side of the scene.. uuhhm, a certain way and (shakes his head and slaps his leg) (to Jared) God bless him, I can’t remember his name, but the-the- (to fan) the guy who stood in for me (Jared nods) on the other end, um, knew all of my lines, (Jared shakes his head) backwards and forwards. And I was so impressed with him. Um, and (scratches his head) I’m killing myself to think of his name.
Jared: (?It was a big scene?). It looked like a five or six (Jensen: [nods] Yeah.) (?scene was it?)?
Jensen: And, you know- But at the same time I couldn’t tell him how I wanted to play the scene. I couldn’t be like, “Listen, act just like me.” (audience laughs) So, I had to remember in my head how I was going to be delivering those lines to me and then react off of the way how I was thinking about those lines- (closes his eyes and shakes his head, holding his hand up) It was very confusing and it was very difficult. And it was very challenging, so, you know, at the end of the day I was like, “Phew, mark that off the list.”
But, uh- and then I think the most difficult thing was the, uh-um- I had to.. get into the demon- Like when I get shot, and the blood all over my face and put the- the eyes in and- (shakes head) and I gave that weird voice, which I don’t know where that came from. (audience laughs. Jared snorts) Um. And then I had to get all cleaned up and go back into the scene and do another take of, (Jared: Oh god.) like, only because- because he wanted- he had time to get that kind of (hand quote) cool double cut shot.

Jensen: Umm.. (smacks lips) You know, I-I think it’s- it’s written in the d-that- it’s something that he longs for, you know? It’s-it’s- I think that, you know, you saw obviously first.. season, uumm, his drive.. and his intent on having that family.. reunited. You know, (gestures to Jared) getting him, finding Dad, and having everybody together and how much that meant to him.
So, you know, it’s something that he never had. He’s seen too much and done t-so much that it just- it’s kind of irreversible.
Um, so, it’s-it’s more of a.. longing sadness than something that he really yearns for. (nods) Yeah. (Fan: And-) (to Jared nodding) That’s a pretty good answer wasn’t it? (audience laughs)

•(insomnia_geek •37, bardicvoice para. 60, sara_p para. 41)- LA08J2;FR4- 3x11; ACT FOUR; Thoughts on Sam living without Dean (Jared)
“In Mystery Spot, we saw Sam without Dean, which was not good. He really was like John. Sam was tough, but it was tough to play him like that. He had a time finding how to act without Dean, because they really are a double act. He commented on the bullet scene, poking around the fake chest prosthetic and pretending to sew it up, and the fake skin was peeling around the edges and it looked really gross. Said the whole thing could make you nauseous.” – IG
“Responding to another question about Mystery Spot, Jared volunteered that the scenes of life without Dean were really hard, that it had been like having a whole new character to play because of how different Sam became. He said that it had been hard to put himself into the whole place of “my brother’s dead, this is Supernatural without Dean,” and it was hard. (He pretty much ran out of adjectives and just reverted to adding emphasis …). On a practical level, he said that the scene of Sam pulling the bullet out of himself was hard in a different way, because he was fitted with a chest appliance covering his own skin, and it felt weird to look in the mirror and poke into it to pull the bullet out and then sew it up.” – B
“Jared talking about Dark!Sam in Mystery Spot was awesome. He specifically mentioned the scene where he had to take the bullet out and sew himself up, and that there was this fake chest prosthetic piece, and having fake skin peeling around the edges made him nauseous, and then Jensen jumped in with "that was his real skin," and Jared was all "I'm just that good." Last Life SMP – The Musical: Track 8 ('Debts')
Note: I don't have a completed track 2-7, but this one was faster to do as I only need to write the music, not record singing or write lyrics. Info about the musical in my pinned post!
This is a background track playing over a spoken conversation, so there are no voices or lyrics here. However, there is still a storyline, following the end of Martyn's ep 2 (Ren convo, though tweaked for conciseness).
0:00-0:33: c!Martyn is sitting by the Southlands, passing the time, thinking about the Southlands alliance especially as it's getting more unstable with him as the only dark green. The music at the start echoes Martyn's restlessness, and the melody at 0:17 (starts in violin, then moves around) is the melody of song 5, "A(ha)lliances", reflecting what he's thinking about.
0:34-1:22: He sees Ren setting his own tower on fire with him inside, and rushes there to put out the flames. The irregular rhythm of the claves echoes the crackling sound of a fire burning wood.
1:24-2:10: He and Ren manage to talk properly for the first time that season, just discussing everyday things, Martyn wanting to ask about an alliance with him. The music uses parts of the melody from song 2, "Corners of the World" (our introduction to Martyn wandering, and through that the wider server), though it spends more in the major key(s) and aims to create a feeling of safety/comfort.
2:11-2:33: Ren reveals that in return for the life Lizzie gave him, he's offered her his loyalty for the rest of the game. Martyn reveals he was going to ask about an alliance with him. The Watcher motif (four notes in the horn at 2:15, and in the oboe at 2:20) appears for the first time to symbolise both the fact the Watchers wish to push the Ren-Martyn alliance together, and also the loss of feeling of a safety net now that Ren's sworn his loyalty away for the whole game. The music also movies into a minor key to symbolise the latter.
2:33-2:45: They do agree this is still feasible, Martyn mentioning it'll be a good way out of the Southlands considering their unstable position (him, three yellows and a light green). Major chord when agreeing it's feasible, minor chord when Martyn talks about this being a way of abandoning the Southlands.
2:45-end: Martyn parts and wanders off, with Ren saying there's always a place for him [at his base]. From 2:50, the music takes inspiration from "Corners of the World" again, and the oboe's final notes are a statement of the melody of its chorus ("corner to corner/i'll keep wamdering on"), symbolising this. However, this melody is slightly tweaked and dissonant to show part of Martyn's mindset changing, which will be explored in the next song...

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this extremely long episode, Tom and an increasingly thirsty Rachel are talking about a villain who looms large in the imaginations of Xennials everywhere: Jareth, the Goblin King. He's a magnetic and malevolent presence whose domain is a perfect reflection of his disaster bi energy, but he has no canon backstory and may just be a figment of Sarah's imagination, so adapting him posed some challenges. But if Sarah can escape the oubliette, cross the Bog of Eternal Stench, and say no to Jareth looking at her like that in the masquerade ball, we can rise to this challenge. Topics discussed include:
Squaring the circle of making Jareth an independent being and a figment of Sarah's imagination at the same time, and how you can make him occupy that same role for your PCs;
Adapting the labyrinth so it reflects your PCs' inner worlds in the same way that the canon labyrinth reflects Sarah's, from "give the movie's labyrinth-dwellers the mannerisms of your NPCs" to high-concept lunacy that makes our Christmas Carol episode look straightforward;
How to bring your PCs into the labyrinth in the first place, since presumably none of them are going to wish for the goblins to steal their babies;
Why everything about the labyrinth, including the thirteen-hour time limit, is ultimately a distraction from Jareth's real game;
and more!

the craft (1996) analysis
putting under a read more bc its Very Long and Very Thorough. organized by time stamp and including analysis of deleted scenes!
note: this is my 3rd time watching the film. first time was by myself, the second was with my partner, this third time is by myself again.
i never saw this movie as a kid but was into witchcraft (and specifically interested in elemental magic in particular) so that element is what im going to be paying particularly close attention to since thats what im most familiar with. also as someone who was like. public about being able to "do magic" and the like when i was in elementary school (as well as being outcast for other things such as being fat, poor, a year younger than everybody else, quiet, mentally ill, etc.) this film definitely Resonates in a way where i feel like its cultural impact in online witch spaces (run by kids themselves) influenced me without ever seeing it or knowing about it at the time. like watching it for the first time felt super nostalgic despite never having seen it before.
0:52-opening shots are fairly basic and just introduce that these characters are witches.
0:54-the candles are red, green, blue, and yellow, with red being the dominant color, possibly alluding to nancy’s dominant influence over the group.
1:01-nancy’s outfit immediately informs us of her character. mesh, pu jacket, piercing, she is a goth girl who is poor. the camera also zooms past bonnie and rochelle, showing us that they are not as “important” as nancy.
1:21-flashing imagery of demons references the whole satanic panic imagery of the 80s. in these flashes are also the image of the yonic virgin mary from the witchcraft shop, the opening windows from sarah’s home (blown open by wind-air-nancy), as well as prolonged shots of a desert (earth), the ocean (water), an explosion (fire), and clouds (air). the clouds are the shot that lingers the longest, hinting again at nancy’s influence. also as the images flash, the cut to nancy’s eyes become darker and redder, hinting at her character path.
2:16-sarah is on a plane, hinting again at how she will immerse herself in nancy’s influence. her nervousness also represents her distance from her element of earth.
3:00-heavy rain and snakes as she arrives hints at the bad times ahead of her.
3:13-her house is heavily overgrown, symbolizing her connection to earth.
3:50-sarah’s outfit is already vaguely witchy, but definitely far more preppy than the other three. still, her all black visually cues us in that she is also an outsider in some way. her white shirt symbolizes her inner goodness.
4:11-her losing her mother (who is later revealed to have been a witch too) is a reference to “mother earth”. she is also photographed standing in a garden or forest, surrounded by trees and plants, and even the frame has a gilded leaf pattern surrounding it. she is also wearing a black (or dark-colored) dress, and a wide-brimmed hat reminiscent of a witch hat. the photo being in black and white could also be a reference to the film’s themes of lightness and darkness.
5:15-the snake being killed by a family member could also represent her future arc of her mother's spirit helping her defeat nancy.
5:41-in contrast to her introduction scene, she is now wearing all-white, trying to fit in when she’s around other people. she is also framed with foliage and green as she enters the school, but once she steps indoors and into the world of others she loses touch with that part of herself.
6:50-a great showing of character, bonnie’s outfit obscures her and she attempts to hide her face with the almanac, rochelle’s outfit is preppy and she seems to be studying schoolwork, meanwhile nancy’s outfit is the gothest and most revealing of the group, and she is seen making sarcastic comments despite having a leading role in the group. she also pulls a noose out of her locker, perhaps a reference to her future binding, as well as her mental problems and self-destructive tendencies. also bi queen.
8:15-the shithead side character is at least accurate to high school french
8:20-i like that bonnie is the one to notice sarah doing subtle magic since she was the one to read the almanac about a fourth coming and the only one to take it seriously.  the magic also just seems to sarah like she was balancing a pencil in a divot on the table, but to the witches it reads as magical.
9:56-annoys me a little that it takes 10 minutes to learn the main character’s name
10:40-very typical of a shithead boy trying to use someone by putting down other women to make the one he’s talking to feel better. madonna whore complex etc etc. the only thing he says about nancy is that she’s a slut, since often when someone is deemed that its then the only thing they can be. he harps on bonnie’s burn scars for a while, and again its the only thing he says about her. in both cases he makes sure to mention everything he knows about them is from his friends, not him, distancing himself from the so-called “whores”. he doesn’t even mention rochelle, the only character of color in the film, presumably assuming her race is enough reason to avoid her.
11:40-outside again, sarah is again framed with lots of green and foliage.
13:53-nancy warms up to sarah once her self-harm marks are pointed out, finally seeing her as someone troubled like her, since to an outsider sarah definitely seems prep enough (even to others like chris).
14:01-rochelle and bonnie trail behind nancy and sarah, representing the opposing elements (water with fire and air with earth). rochelle also asks bonnie how she knows what “the right way” is, implying bonnie has had suicidal ideation.
14:30-the virgin mary is lingered on upon entering the witch shop, mirroring how jesus on the cross was lingered on upon entering the school, representing the dominant gender divisions within each realm, with the shithead boys taking up most of the screen time and dialogue at the school, and vice versa at the witch shop. the woman working the counter also mirrors the male french teacher at school.
15:07-bonnie’s voice is always the quietest, and she asks sarah to steal sth for her by hiding it in her bag. bonnie as a character is one that seeks to hide. the book was for writing secrets in and never showing to anyone else. even when rochelle asked her a question earlier she refused to answer, hiding again.
16:14-sarah being called a “natural witch” again ties into her earth element, as well as the theme of witchcraft being associated with nature and the feminine, while religion is associated with artificiality and the masculine.
17:09-the people on the street who stop her include a priest who tells her to come back to jesus, and the snake man from earlier, who claims “i’m in touch with the man”, again aligning masculinity with religion, the snake representing the snake in the garden of eden. indeed, when we first see the snake it is climbing a tree near sarah’s lush house. sarah’s arc mimics eve’s temptation, and is referenced several times.
17:27-the second instance of “magic”, which could have just been coincidence, since he was wandering in the middle of the road. i really like how most of the magic in the movie could all be explained away, it adds to their bond in that they all are viewing the world in the same way, different from others.
18:18-”man invented god, this is older than that” witchcraft being associated with nature and the feminine, while religion is associated with artificiality and the masculine again
18:33-sarah says “its nature” when nancy is explaining manul.
19:50-”nothing makes everything all better again” is a core dichotomy between nancy and sarah, where nancy constantly chases after anything and everything to improve her life, while sarah believes there is nothing that can help her pain. her wearing all white also marks her as different than the others in the group.
20:33-its implied a few days have passed, but either way word has gotten out as chris assumes she would’ve been hanging out with nancy, bonnie, and rochelle. here she is again dressed in all black, marking her as an outsider to chris. the main four girls also all have somewhat old-fashioned names.
22:22-again reinforcing the school as a man’s world, chris can spread whatever lies and everyone will believe him but never her.
23:18-here we see rochelle’s association with water, as well as her experience with racism from bullies.
24:48-here we see bonnie’s association with fire, and bonnie’s bored expression tells us how common doctor’s visits like these are.
26:55-at sarah’s house we see more earth imagery, as well as rain, symbolizing the bad day/night all the characters are having.
27:11-nancy’s house is accompanied by horror music, representing how her struggles are very intense both at home and everywhere else in her life. she walks past her dog and leaves it in the rain, representing her lack of care for others. her family is poor and live in a small, cheap house, her dad is a deadbeat, her mom is an alcoholic, they are constantly arguing. all nancy gets for a greeting is yelled at for being late, and then forgotten about in her bedroom. the holes in the roof and her small house overall (lacking worldly possessions) is a reference to her element of air.  she clutches a stuffed rabbit in one hand and a cigarette in the other, torn between childhood and adulthood and desperately seeking comfort. she lays back but doesn’t move away from the rain leaking into her eyes, feeling like she deserves this. her smoking habit is also a reference to air (lungs, blowing, inhaling).
28:10-nancy interrupts and acts out in class to try to get sarah’s attention by making her laugh, still drawn to her.
28:23-nancy sits in front of the other three on the bus, leading them. she also sits alone, representing her isolation. the little kids just laugh at her, and aren’t afraid of her despite her attempts to be threatening. everywhere she goes she is not taken seriously.
28:49-nancy snarks back to the bus driver because she again feels patronized.
29:30-they repeat “earth, air, fire, water” and break to each repeat their own elements at the same time, with nancy saying air and rochelle saying water (bonnie and sarah’s heads are turned but we can assume).
29:34-rochelle enters bonnie into the circle, and they kiss on the lips (water and fire being opposing elements). bonnie then enters nancy into the circle, and they do a european kiss instead (no contact) (fire and air are closer than air and water, but are not diametric). nancy enters sarah into the circle, and they kiss each other on the cheek (earth and air are opposing, but sarah is still newer than rochelle and bonnie are to each other). nancy also encourages sarah, and is the one to complete the ritual, representing her leadership of the group (and especially her leadership of sarah).
30:30-rochelle asks not for her experience with racism to stop, but to learn how to not hate racists. which. um.
31:14-sarah asks to be able to love herself and let herself be loved by others, but instead of speaking of her new friends, she mentions chris, despite him bullying her and tarring her reputation just because she didn’t fuck him on the first date. in the picture he is dressed in all white, the striking image of the church, masculinity, conformity. despite practicing witchcraft, she still wants to fit in and conform, which is really the driving force of all their wishes: to be accepted (except for rochelle because um. idfk why they wrote her to be like “i wish i was nicer” when she is already incredibly patient and nice instead of her being like “i wish ppl weren’t racist to me” which would tie in better with the themes anyways).
31:18-nancy looks forlorn after hearing sarah’s wish, as if she wants something she can’t have.
31:31-bonnie wishes to be beautiful outside as well as in. this is the first time she shows her scars outside of the doctor’s office, as her shawl hangs off her shoulder, showing us her comfort around her friends.
31:53-nancy sighs, quivers, then shudders, putting the glass to her lips before speaking her wish, and just diverts to “all the power of manul”, unable to be open or vulnerable to even her only friends. in a sense her asking for power is relevant, as someone who feels very powerless in her situation (unable to control her home life, everyone at school bullies her because they see her as a slut, even kids on the bus laugh in her face), but the way its spoken seems like a coverup for a truer desire. she chugs the whole glass of wine and blood as her friends ask if “that’s all” she wished for, sensing the hidden motive. she ignores them and desperately takes in every last drop in hopes for a change.
32:24-butterflies pass over and its taken as a sign, but again it could be a coincidence. magic in this universe is subtle (unless being taken too far).
32:40-nancy says “he’s listening to us” and smiles, before covering up her smile, lest she show any vulnerability or hint that she just wishes someone would listen and understand.
33:31-chris begins following sarah around, again possibly caused by her magic working or by him being persistent to not be turned down by someone. he makes excuses for himself, saying he’s just a guy, and tells her he’ll tell his friends the truth later, then asks if he can sit next to her in mass, trying to get back on her good side. to chris its a game of manipulation, to sarah manul is granting her wish.
35:00-rochelle is excited to see a spell working, while nancy refuses to look, jealous, either of manul granting sarah’s wish first or perhaps of sarah crushing on a jerk like chris, or even on anyone else but her.
35:35-nancy makes a second lesbian joke. 🤔
35:49-nine candles are lit around rochelle, three for each witch doing the magic. bonnie is the closest to the candles, being the element of fire, while sarah is the furthest from her cluster being the element of earth (compared to nancy being air which is opposing to fire). bonnie and sarah share rochelle’s right side, while nancy is alone on her left, representing again how isolated she feels.
36:03-in the comfort of her own home, bonnie wears the least concealing outfit of the film so far. she also has her hair held out of her face for the first time. here, with only her friends and family around to see her (as well as her growing post-wish confidence) she is comfortable to not hide.
37:04-this is the first time the group sees magic that is non-disputable, and its from an activity led by sarah rather than by nancy.
38:40-the book on the table is open to a page of four witches dancing around a tree, two bare on the west and east, one donned in all black and a witch hat in the north, and one in a greek-esque gown holding a spear in the south. traditionally, west and east are water (rochelle) and air (nancy) respectively, north is earth (sarah), and south is fire (bonnie). these don't quite line up with their characters unfortunately. missed opportunity.
38:23-the group is dressed more in white than black, being subtly led by sarah now instead. bonnie also wears short sleeves and pinned-back hair in front of others at school, gaining confidence despite her scars.
39:20-they braid a lock of laura’s hair into rochelle’s hair, and mention she has split ends from all the bleach. rochelle wonders what will happen to her, and sarah tells her “if she leaves you alone nothing will happen to her, nothing good”. sarah leads the spell on rochelle, since water is closer to earth.
39:42-sarah reveals her mom died as she was having her. in sarah’s house now doing their spellwork, representing her leadership.
39:59-in front of the fireplace, bonnie has her spell performed on her. nancy leads the spell on bonnie, since air is closer to fire. nancy looks genuinely moved by bonnie’s pleading, and looks away for a moment to collect herself lest she show emotion.
40:39-at the pool, laura again mocks rochelle, but is told by the coach to “put a lid on it” , while previously the coach seemingly turned a blind eye. however after teasing her, her hair starts to fall out, hinting at what sarah said about how nothing would happen to her if she left rochelle alone. however again, her hair falling out could’ve been caused by all the chemicals from bleaching her hair all the time, rather than by the spell. for the first time, the coach also sees rochelle’s skill.
42:00-her scars being healed could’ve been from the experimental gene therapy treatment she underwent as well.
43:05-it’s framed as a sudden change, but really bonnie was already at the point of wearing similar outfits in just the scene before. she definitely has a boost in confidence, but she was already at this level before from being accepted by her friends and developing her sense of self beyond what others thought of her.
42:23-rochelle and bonnie tell sarah that “she did it”, while nancy watches quietly from the background. sarah wears a black jacket over a white shirt, while nancy wears a white jacket over a black shirt, symbolizing their respective sides and current inversions.
43:45-nancy storms off and rochelle guesses that its because her spell isn’t working, but its also because she feels unimportant in the group under sarah’s leadership, the newbie essentially replacing her. rochelle comments that she thinks nancy doesn’t want to be white trash anymore, and that she’s white, just deal with it, subtly implying that she’s trashy no matter what. she is the only poor person of the group after all.
43:52-nancy’s candles are all red, reinforcing her color symbolism. she even has a red lava lamp.
44:23-her stepdad makes a sexual comment and grabs at her, and she just yells “leave me alone” and goes back to her room, hinting at another one of her struggles, and one that would go along with her “reputation” as a whore and her struggle between childhood and adulthood, innocence and maturity.
44:42-her stepdad gets physical with her mom after essentially calling her mom a whore too, and as she screams the microwave blows out, which could have been caused by magic or by the faulty electricity of the house (set up the last time we saw her home too). she calls her stepdad a pig and he has a heart attack, which again could’ve just been caused by the intensity of everything that just happened. nancy’s mom (and her stepdad too) is also wearing white both times we see her, while nancy wears black and red, signaling nancy’s outsidership even among her family.
45:44-nancy’s mom wears black here, in mourning, but is holding white roses. the lawyer wears white.
46:49-bonnie openly flirts with a guy (who is dressed in white) because of her confidence boost. the group’s outfits are also now much more expensive looking than before, possibly bought by nancy, especially given that they are all in all-black again, signaling her gaining control back over the group. the woman exiting the building is also dressed in white.
47:34-after nancy mimics shooting her mom, she goes over to look out the window and sarah puts a hand on her back to comfort her.
47:46-even after getting 175,000 dollars (over $300,000 in today’s money), her mom still spends the money on just an apartment they rent, a kitschy couch, and a jukebox placed in the center of the room, drinking wine instead of beer now (as well as spanking nancy’s ass which she winces in pain from), referencing what sarah said earlier about how nothing makes everything all better. she’s away from her dad and in a nicer place still, but its still less than what her friends have (apt. vs houses), her mom is still an alcoholic, and she’s still an outsider. even if she has temporary control over the group, she knows she’ll need to pull something even bigger and better than what sarah did, since the group still sees the spell’s success as being caused by sarah. the apartment being on the top floor references her element of air again.
49:03-as sarah says the glamour spell, nancy mouths it at the same time. also her room is filled with red candles again, and the lights of the city visually mimic additional candles as well.
49:52-nancy is genuinely happy and smiles seeing sarah do a dramatic glamour spell, and even touches her hair. also in the vein of subtle magic, her eye color change is unnoticeable until pointed out, and the hair change could be explained as friends playing along in a dark room.
50:38-sarah’s robe has a large flower on the back (earth).
50:34-chris sits among cacti, surrounded by earth's influence but still dangerous to touch.
51:57-the lights in the witch shop are evenly balanced between colors.
52:10-the shopkeep comparing magic to a flood is another comparison drawn between manul and nature. hinting at nancy’s influence of the group, sarah is slightly rude to the owner of the shop, quipping about her hiding missing kids in the back.
52:14-the shopkeep is framed with the virgin mary behind her, and her hair tied back with loose blue ribbons and wearing a flowing blue dress references her to this as well. she acts as a guiding role and mother figure for sarah who is eve, while nancy is baphomet, all of her imagery surrounding snakes and darkness and forbidden knowledge. the shopkeep also directly guards the temptation of knowledge behind the curtain, and tells nancy it is not up to her to judge suffering (implying reference to god). she also directly states that magic is nature, and that duality exists inherently, rather than being dichotomous, with the shop balancing reds and blues, blacks and whites, and magic and religion.
52:39-nancy is wearing one of those candy necklaces under her spiked choker, again representing youthfulness vs. maturity.
52:49-the shopkeep ends her explanation by quoting the bible. while being a mother mary parallel, she is also the source of magical knowledge, splitting the dichotomy seen throughout the rest of the film. this also hints at sarah's success, as she is both an eve parallel and a natural witch.
52:55-the first one shown in close on the beach is rochelle, because of her connection to water. she carries a clownfish, another water symbol. she carries a stick with ribbons on it, visually similar to a maypole (since they are performing the ritual on may’s eve), which is traditionally a phallic symbol, similar to the penis-shaped candle she held in the previous scene. water (similar to earth's mother symbolism) is often associated with fertility and passion, which this phallic imagery may be in reference to.
54:03-bonnie carries an orange butterfly. one of the people on production said they meant for bonnie to represent air and that this hints at her true nature and that nancy is really the fire element and the fact that they're misaligned from their true elements is what makes them so unstable, but as you can see from what i’ve been picking apart, this doesn’t really track. plus bonnies like whole thing is that she was burned. what connection does she have to air. if anything, if it WAS elemental misalignment another place to show this would be in the use of altar tools (athame/knife=fire (which nancy DOES use, but it's seemingly no deeper than her being the leader and Edgy/Evil), pentacle=earth, chalice=water, wand=air) but OOPS ROCHELLE IS THE ONLY CHARACTER SEEN HOLDING WANDS/STAFFS SO. i really think it doesn't hold up especially because earth and air are opposing elements. why would the conflict in this heavily elementally-themed movie not be the obvious choice. plus if nancy was fire, it disrupts the earth/air parallel between her and sarah, as well as the fire/water pair of bonnie and rochelle. like yes nancy has a fiery personality, but that’s overdone for fire characters anyways. plus she also has plenty of symbolic connection to air and her personality of being the ideas person, ungrounded in reality, often thinking more than saying all fit with typical air element personality traits. anyways this always annoyed me its fire because its a warm color moving on.
54:10-sarah carries a blue budgie in a birdcage bc. ??? the birdcage is wooden though.
54:18-nancy carries a snake in a jar, continuing her association with them and her religious imagery as well.
54:31-rochelle performs a ritual on bonnie, while sarah confides in nancy. rochelle is the only one in color (a periwinkle dress), the closest to her element in this setting.
54:44-sarah says that when things were at her worst, she saw snakes and bugs everywhere, mimicking how she’s beginning to see snakes everywhere again, and explaining why she was running away from the man with the snake so desperately each time. nancy just tells her to respect the serpent (her), signaling their increasing tension in the group. nancy could not stand when sarah was leading, and until now sarah was fine following nancy again, but now begins to shift away from wanting to respect nancy after being ignored by her, and then told what ritual to do.
55:22-nancy: east, air and invention-she calls the corners first, firmly back in control of the group. she also calls “hear me” and rochelle corrects with “us”, again signaling her self-centeredness. her inventiveness is also seen through her leadership and desire to learn about witchcraft no matter the cost.
55:29-bonnie: south, fire and feeling-her feeling center is seen through her being one of the more openly emotional members of the group, as well as her being shut off and shy at the beginning signaling her out-of-touch-ness with herself.
55:37-rochelle: west, water and intuition-rochelle is one of the quieter and more empathetic members of the group, but we don’t see much of her “intuition” in the film. i wonder why :///.
55:42-sarah: north, mother and earth-she switches by saying her element second, perhaps signaling her focus on the loss of her mother and her start of a drift away from the group.
55:56-”may eve” is the day before may day, exactly six months before halloween and  "This holiday incorporates traditions from the Gaelic Bealtaine, such as the bonfire, but it bears more relation to the Germanic May Day festival, both in its significance (focusing on fertility) and its rituals (such as May pole dancing)." they cast the spell around a bonfire, and rochelle brings a walking stick with ribbons tied around it to the circle.
56:38-all four elements penetrate the circle, earth below, fire in the center, air surrounding, and the ocean waves lapping at the edges.
57:04-nancy is struck by lightning since she was holding the knife in the air.
57:34-in the light we can see that sarah’s leather jacket is really a dark brown, hinting at both her connection to earth and her growing distance from nancy’s control.
57:41-nancy walks on water (likely by hovering in the air), inverting her devil imagery to jesus imagery.
58:57-as nancy pets the dead sharks and calls them “beautiful”, sarah stands far away from the rest of the group, distancing herself. being most tied to earth, she is also most sensitive to the animals in it and disruptions of natural orders. nancy again restates “he’s everywhere he’s in everything”. her seeing the sharks as “gifts” could partly be read as her being desperate and taking everything as a sign as a way to maintain power in the group (although honestly i’m not rly sure what the dead sharks mean aside from danger/animal sacrifice imagery).
59:28-their placement in the car really emphasizes their roles within the group. nancy is driving, sarah is in the passenger seat (protesting and somewhat leading but ultimately now powerless), and bonnie and rochelle in the backseat laughing along like children. this is where the movie stops giving bonnie and rochelle any characterization and starts treating them like mindless followers so. there is a distinct point where the movie starts going gradually downhill and it’s as soon as nancy gets hit by lightning. anyways the car they’re in is also red which is nancy’s theme color.
59:42-sarah says that bonnie “used to be nice but now you’re completely narcissistic”, a change we are very much told not shown. bonnie’s reasons for being a little full of herself seem pretty valid tbh either way. starting to get to the failing point of this movie’s attempt at feminism which is “what if women had power-> it would be bad.”.
1:00:06-the shopkeeper’s name is lirio, which we learn only a full hour in.
1:00:29-nancy says “they [bonnie and rochelle] don’t think” which. is rly what the movies going with now.
1:00:36-nancy and sarah argue about sarah trying to “win them over”, and sarah calls nancy “paranoid”. this is something we Saw earlier but now we have to have it told to us.
1:00:54-the fight between sarah and nancy is very much framed as a married couple arguing with the kids in the back, with “do you want to leave the circle or not” and “why does it always have to be that way with you nancy” being very easily replaced with marriage and divorce. this movie has some subtext fr. either or, this conversation exemplifies their different ideas, with nancy viewing things as black and white, and sarah viewing things as dual-natured (as explained to her by lirio). nancy gripped this duality at the beginning of the movie, with her explaining manul as the field god and the devil fought on (good vs. evil), but has gradually shifted towards extremism as a method of control.
1:01:06-the lights changing could again be coincidence (subtle magic). nancy also only gets a red light after sarah tells her one of these times its not going to be green.
1:02:01-when laura cries “what did i do to deserve this?”, her friends come rushing to her aid, contrasting how when dealing with racist bullying, no one came to rochelle’s aid the same way, even though the issue was worse than hair falling out.
1:02:20-rochelle’s reflection is slightly out of synch with her, showing how she is becoming disconnected from herself, and how alone she is. rochelle’s spell never really comes back to her “times three”, since she wished for the ability to not hate her bullies, which could not really in any possible way be construed as using magic for personal gain. still, the movie from here on out treats her as a mindless follower and bitch. so.
1:02:52-sarah is framed surrounded by trees and flowers, again grounding her to earth, and grounding her in a “normal” moment of talking to a boy on the phone. however, chris refuses to take no for an answer, and the line “how do you know what i look like talking on the phone?” implies he is stalking her. she is wearing a dark blue cardigan, distancing her from nancy’s black and red again.
1:03:11-sarah says she started hanging out with them because it felt nice to belong, but “i disagree with them once and they turn their backs on me” is definitely an oversimplification of the complex dynamics of the group. we also don’t really see them turning their backs on her. this is definitely the area in the movie where a lot of the plot appears to be straight up missing. like its an adaptation of a book that had scenes cut for time. except i am also aware of the cut scenes that have made their way to youtube throughout the years and i will be talking about those at the end and i DO think they absolutely NEEDED to be included to make the second act make any kind of sense.
1:04:06-chris is talking much more like he’s under a spell here than like. a nuanced portrayal of how differing perceptions can lead to perfect storm conditions for sexual assault on young girls and women.
1:05:06-sarah narrowly escapes being assaulted, running into the woods (earth) and to rochelle’s house. rochelle immediately takes her in and comforts her, hinting at her being the most emotionally intelligent of the group (water), and the bond between earth and water. sarah is wearing a black shawl as she rejoins the group. this scene overall is genuinely harrowing and not like. romanticized or glamourized so at least points to that.
1:05:41-nancy is genuinely shocked by this and refuses to stand down even when sarah tells her to let it go. however she says “i wanna go play” instead of like. “im going to go kill him”. which seems less ic to me ig.
1:07:30-i genuinely fucking hate this scene. they couldn’t jst not sexualize teens ig. also it rly doesn’t track the idea of nancy trying to rebound with her douche ex who branded her a whore (which like. the beginning implied they weren’t ever like a long-term deal but now ig they were fucking on the reg which. not only is a plot hole but is also jst. in what fucking universe would nancy fucking downes fuck some random jock) like. it also frames nancy as then like. raping the rapist which is jst. and then she cries and is genuinely upset that she’s rejected? like ig it could be some shit of like. trying to prove she’s better than sarah but being rejected by chris no matter what but. idk i feel like then she would be more likely to like. try to put herself in sarah’s situation and get out of it, proving that she’s stronger if they rly HAVE to go for that psychology. instead of. idk. maybe they look out for each other as outcasts of the society chris represents??? just a thought??? and then she puts on the glamour and they start fucking and this scene is mercifully put to an end when sarah walks in. ugh. literally jst bullshit ooc nonsense just with the purpose of sexualizing teens and making nancy look ~twisted and craaaaaaaazy~.
1:09:30-laura approaches rochelle and says she wants to talk. we don’t see any of this conversation though. bc rochelle isn’t important enough ig. bonnie is wearing warm colors and rochelle cool, symbolizing their elements. however this would also symbolize their individuality, and is another part of the movie that feels like the order of the scenes got jumbled, since they're all much less “mindless followers of nancy” throughout this night.
1:10:02-”thats why im here, to help you forget about her” is jst. again jst bs sexualization and male writers being like “fuck whats a crazy bitch ex thing to do”.
1:10:15-chris calls her jealous, and that’s when she snaps. which again, is true, but i think she had uhhh idk. other reasons to snap at him. like him trying to rape her friend/crush. also again its all the whole “whatever you wish for comes back times three” and for nancy its losing control of her mind and becoming paranoid of losing control of the group. which is rly the fatal flaw of the film’s feminism and the clearest stating of its failure is with nancy’s downfall. if a young, abused (physically, verbally, sexually, in and out of the home), traumatized, outsider woman got power she 1. wouldn’t be able to control it 2. wouldn’t be able to use it responsibly and 3. wouldn’t deserve it because its “not the natural order of things”. all throughout the film her being blessed by manul and taking in his power (again, even witchcraft, the counterpart to male power in the film is referred to masculinely) is called “unnatural” and framed as inherently wrong. only sarah’s magic is left untainted by the end (not that it doesn’t end up also framing her as unhinged by the end of things (reinforcing what i’m talking about here as relevant to all characters in the film)) because she’s a “natural” witch, and inherited her powers from her mother, ie you don’t deserve what you’re not born with (reinforced by nancy getting rich, bonnie being healed, rochelle no longer experiencing racism, all being framed as “selfish” for wanting them to end and something that they’ll get punished for wanting reprieve from in the end. even sarah’s wish of a normal high school boyfriend who then attempts to rape her is framed as HER FAULT for casting the spell in the first place, and magic taking it’s course.). like i cannot emphasize that enough that WITHIN THE TEXT OF THE FILM, IT IS SARAH’S OWN FAULT FOR ALMOST BEING RAPED BECAUSE SHE WISHED FOR A BOY TO LIKE HER. because anything a woman wants is selfish, and she needs to pay for even having wished for an ounce of control over a man, or a life, or a system, or a body. the thesis of the craft is “if a woman got power it would be bad”.
1:10:35-this scene of nancy chewing out chris is rly sick unfortunately. i love her witchy boots dragging along the floor as she hovers (air) and again how the magic is subtle, both in its casting and its execution (her saying he’s nothing ends in him dying, his death could’ve been an accident rather than actually supernatural).
1:10:37-”the only way you know how to treat women is by treating them like WHORES. WHEN YOURE THE WHORE! AND THAT’S GONNA STOP!!!” “OH HE’S SORRY??? HE’S SORRY???” sickest lines and so so true of her. she was right to kill him. she also does it by blowing him out a window again connecting her to air.
1:11:28-”i didn’t want him to get hurt. i liked him” ugh. setting up this dichotomy that she’s only good because even though she was a victim of sexual assault she doesn’t want anything bad to happen to her rapist :((( bc he was a good guy deep down and it was her fault anyways :(((. sickening. nancy was right. she’s the protagonist. to me. again like this isn’t bad in itself bc like abuse is complicated right but its not treated like that. its treated like nancy is crazy and evil for hurting chris and sarah is good and pure for taking her assault like a good damsel and escaping (so as to not ruin her purity unlike whores like nancy) but not wishing him any harm nonetheless.
1:11:48-”everything i touch turns to shit” :/// again it would’ve been better if sarah not wanting to be touched&be left alone was caused by like. trauma. ¬ her blaming herself for uhhhhhhhh a would-be rapist dying debatably in an accident that she was just kinda Nearby for. her dad is wearing all green (earth tones) but sarah wears blue&gray, a bit out of sync with herself.
1:12:26-sarah is framed by flora&birdsong (earth) as she binds nancy with a white ribbon, white to represent purity&goodness but UNFORTUNATELY ALSO TO FUCKING FORESHADOW SOMETHING ELSE. GOD. she also specifies that she doesn’t want nancy to harm herself either, as she tends to be somewhat self-destructive as well.
1:13:06-sarah has a nightmare where nancy, rochelle, and bonnie blow in through her window, flying, led by nancy (air). they all laugh at her like stereotypical witches&try to kill her, perhaps representing how sarah has begun to demonize witchcraft in her mind (and along with it, her friends). however textually its more meant to represent that They’re Evil Now And Going To Kill You :///. it technically still works under the binding spell, as they don’t physically hurt her.
1:13:36-sarah is back to dressing more school-appropriately, in white&earth tones. in the background, extras are staring at her&talking about her, likely following rumours of chris’s death.
1:13:58-the other 3 burst in, interrupting sarah hiding for alone time, dressed in all black to signify their Complete Evilness. &boy, are they talking like cartoon villains now. they give false condolences then quickly launch into interrogating her about why she wants to leave. its crazy also that sarah says that nancy’s dad dying was a bad thing that was too far when she never even saw what nancy’s home life was like.
1:14:38-nancy leads rochelle’s and bonnie’s words, with her saying “we don’t really need a fourth, do we girls?”, paralleling the beginning when it was bonnie&rochelle convincing nancy they did need a fourth&that she’d be here soon. so at some point off screen they fully lost any individuality&have been reduced to Henchmen.
1:15:11-nancy asks sarah to not do any more spells on her, seeming genuine for a second, before lapsing back into threats, all of which imply they now want her dead for “betraying” them.
1:15:28-rochelle&bonnie comment basically that they did do the nightmare spell on her&were there for it. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. also bonnie’s whole devolution was supposed to be narcissism and yet she is wearing nearly identical clothing as she was at the start. its really like someone else with 0 understanding of the established characters&themes was handed the script halfway thru.
1:15:55-the shopkeep is wearing all white in this scene, again portraying her as a benevolent matronly figure.
1:16:25-the binding “didn’t work”&”they’re using magic against me”&”they’ve killed people”. the binding Did technically Work, as they aren’t hurting anyone physically.
1:16:56-the shopkeep leads her behind the curtain, metaphorically giving her the forbidden fruit of knowledge. inside is a temple, with an upwards pentagram on the floor, combining witchcraft&religion once more. the pentacle also symbolizes both earth (with lirio stepping into the mother earth/mother mary mentor role for sarah), as well as the harmony between earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, representing the balance her craft has developed over time.
1:17:25-”i can’t control it, i always end up hurting someone” is seemingly the central theme of how magic is in this universe, and a sort of Character Statement for act 2 sarah (which might i remind you is a complex caused by her blaming herself for her own sexual assault. the makers of this film’s thesis statement was probably something like “absolute power corrupts absolutely” but they really more ended up saying “if a woman got power it would be bad”. their powers are never absolute (everything being able to be alternately explained) and no male characters when given agency ever hurt anyone else (unless poor chris is mind controlled into rape.. and he was right for bullying nancy anyways bc she’s so evil :///). it's only when disenfranchised women use witchcraft to try to improve their lives that we see power corrupting.
1:17:37-sarah’s mom being a witch is… yeah yeah “mother nature”&all but Also it sets it up that She’s A Good Witch Bc She Was Born One&the others are Bad Witches bc they weren’t MEANT to be able to have a better homelife, heal from burn scars, and not face racist bullying respectively. anyways Here’s my rochelle rant here for some reason: she had so many scenes cut. you get to see none of her family, she gets the least lines&development, her problems are never dove into. she was supposed to talk about having an eating disorder and the stress of being the only black girl in an all-white neighborhood&school, but that was fully cut. all she gets is: she does diving bc she’s water&she has One racist bully that distracts from her performance&she wishes TO BE NICER???&it comes back to her in three by uhhhhhhhh she’s a mindless evil drone now. a movie cannot have a character driven by her experiences of racism when the filmmakers involved are fundamentally racist themselves. also of course the Racism is like. the only angle her character gets Because She’s The Token Black One. but like if its all they’re gonna do for her the fact they don’t even do it well is… where was i in this film. bisexual lighting ig.
1:18:04-the shopkeep tells her to defeat her friends she has to lose herself&invoke the spirit. “but it made nancy crazy” jst saying it outright huh. its like this movie felt Obligated to have a one-note crazy evil witch just bc its Adjacent to being a horror film. the shopkeep says it only happened bc “she takes it to a dark place”&sarah still refuses but she says “you don’t have a choice lol”&then sarah’s just like Fine W/ It&starts the ritual???
1:18:36-they have a hallucination of fire blowing up the shop, but it turns out to just be wind (air/nancy). sarah runs away, essentially turning down the apple in her eve metaphor&keeping her symbolically pure.
1:19:56-nancy essentially prank calls sarah telling her her family is dead, but being bound she cannot technically hurt anyone.
1:20:25-the shadow of the stained glass window turn into snakes, again positioning nancy as the devil.
1:20:43-snakes, lizards, spiders, rats, maggots abound in her garden (of eden), a “corruption” of her earth element into stereotypically Scary animals. i feel like a true earth-elemental character wouldn’t be phased by this though. its also one big hallucination by nancy, as it has been getting gradually established that she can read&alter people’s thoughts, perhaps in connection to air’s association with the mental.
1:21:53-the animals also overrun her house, with scorpions&cockraoches added in her bathroom. “GUSTAV KLIMT” is written on a whiteboard in her bathroom, an austrian symbolist painter. unsure exactly what the reference here is, although some cursory research reveals a painting titled “Hygeia” of a young woman holding a snake&representing health, cleanliness, and hygiene, with the snake referencing the staff of asclepius (medicine). something about snakes in a bathroom maybe? unsure, it could’ve just been an accident too where they had meant to put one of his paintings there&didn’t.
1:22:23-sarah yelling “stop it” does make it stop (magic), with nancy popping out&saying “gotchya!” like it was a simple prank.
1:22:28-WAIT I WAS FUCKING RIGHT IN THIS SCENE THE POSTER IS FLIPPED AROUND&YOU CAN SEE IT IS HYGEIA HOLY FUCK. MY ANALYSIS SKILLS!!!
1:22:30-”if i was as pathetic as you are, i would’ve killed myself AGES ago” nancy’s classic putting down others as a defense mechanism while also revealing how deeply hurt she is at the same time. again stating her self-destructive tendencies.
1:22:58-ok so it Is a different poster it's just flipped backwards. she got a 2-klimt bathroom.
1:22:31-nancy implies that her parents are really dead&that “you’re going to kill yourself tonight my dear”. i jst rly don’t get it. like. with bonnie&rochelle fully back under nancy’s thumb she doesn’t really have much reason to be so cruel to sarah other than being afraid of her to a degree. but again this movie went from being about being an outsider&finding friendship&reclaiming your life from your abusers to uhhhh Evil Witches, so. the dynamics of the first act just don’t really hold up. they’re also wearing all black&dressed like stereotypical witches while sarah remains in her white catholic school uniform, aligning her with the patriarchal institution.
1:24:05-nancy rubbing it in sarah’s face that her mom died giving birth to her… trying to suicide bait her bc she no longer has any magical ability to harm people.
1:24:28-nancy calls sarah weak&disgusting for her not using magic, &given their narrative parrallels (won’t use magic vs. can’t use magic) it really feels like externalized self-hatred.
1:24:39-nancy leads rochelle&bonnie in chanting a spell to kill sarah, as she only bound nancy¬ the other two. this is doubly evidenced by nancy stopping chanting while the other two keep going to talk to sarah about her faked suicide note.
1:25:01-nancy slashes sarah’s wrists with a knife, sarah saying “this isn’t real”, but nancy insists and sarah believes. she also slashes them across, a reference to it not being the “right way” bonnie mentioned earlier in the film, the new marks crossing her scar.
1:25:38-sarah cries out “please somebody help me”&looks to her mom.
1:25:58-as it starts raining, rochelle, empowered by the presence of her element, refuses to go check on sarah as demanded by nancy. nancy then threatens to kill her, &bonnie stands up&takes rochelle away from nancy, bringing her upstairs, more to protect rochelle than to obey nancy it seems. nancy says “shit”, realizing her control is slipping.
1:26:24-bleeding out, sarah begins invoking the spirit of earth and mother,  putting her element first this time as she reclaims witchcraft.
1:26:41-in the mirror they see reflections of themselves as burned and balding. bc uhhhh they need to be Punished for. turning evil offscreen ig. “it’s coming back times three” but rochelle’s doesn’t even make sense, since all she wished was for HER to be able to be nicer to others. the hair thing was a really random manifestation. bonnie wished to be as beautiful outside as she is inside, so her being Evil now means that she sees herself on the outside as being physically ugly to match, because burn scars obviously make you Ugly. This Is Feminist (SLASH S).
1:27:07-bonnie says “not again”, still traumatized by her experiences. they run out, unstopped by nancy’s pleading, implying they’re leaving her influence behind.
1:28:00-sarah finally invokes manul, with flashes to a drawing of a girl and busts of athena (i think) on her bedframe, implying a feminine counterpart to nancy’s more masculine manul, after receiving ghostly advice from her mother, answering her cries for help. “inside yourself” also implies that invoking the spirit is really only unlocking your own inner potential, rather than inviting in something external outside of one’s self.
1:28:21-the slashes on her wrist dissolve, implying they weren’t there physically, due to nancy’s binding, nancy only having this control over sarah because she believed she did.
1:29:05-nancy’s call almost sounds like “tara” or “terra”, like earth.
1:29:18-the leaves of sarah’s earth-surrounded home are cast over nancy’s trenchcoat.
1:29:31-sarah appears out of nancy’s reflection, grabbing her shoulder. They Are Narrative Parallels And Also Diametrically Opposed Elements.
1:29:58-just as nancy voiced sarah’s worst fears, sarah now does the some, positing manul as a masculine figure of authority come to punish nancy for “abusing what he’s given you&now you’re gonna have to pay the price”. This Is Feminist BTW 👍.
1:30:27-sarah makes nancy hallucinate bugs crawling up her hands&her fingers turning into snakes, symbolically defanging her while also rubbing in her loss of control over rochelle&bonnie.
1:30:50-the snakes growing out of nancy’s hair position her as a medusa-like figure, but more relevantly it reminds me of brunetti’s the punished suicide, where a girl who killed herself (allegedly due to unrequited love)’s skin was turned into a sculpture representing her punishment in hell for killing herself, where her hands are turned to snakes (and one sprouting from her hair as well)&begin attacking her face as she cries. seems very 1:1 but at the same time would also be such an obscure pull so who knows. the Themes are very fitting for nancy’s character tho, her unrequited love borne of an antagonistic and competitive yet sapphic relationship with sarah, suicidal tendancies, and her baphomet/hell symbolism.
1:31:12-sarah calls nancy pathetic, &nancy seems to give her a genuine apology, about how she can’t help being how she is&how things got out of hand. sarah only responds with “good”&repeats the binding spell to her face while nancy pleads gently for her to wait. more role reversal, and yet no real acknowledgement of the failure on the themes of the second act.
1:32:06-speaking of the second act. nancy suddenly jumps towards sarah with her dagger. Bc She’s Crazy. nancy pins her against the wall, wind blowing, gravity shifting, utmost manifestation of air. she screams “you bitch, i’ll kill you” over&over, untill a large bureau crushes sarah against the wall, manifesting her speech. sarah’s body appears gone, but nancy goes to stab it anyways, before sarah kicks her into the mirror, shattering it, both unharmed though due to nancy’s binding&sarah’s pacifism.
1:34:15-rochelle&bonnie appear to sarah, wearing unique colors instead of nancy’s black dress code, seemingly acting nicer to her, until sarah throws it back in their faces at them again. they still remain nice and apologetic, even as sarah acts incredibly standoffish to them.
1:35:02-it is clumsily delivered that they lost their powers. for some reason.
1:35:20-rochelle, in gray and black (closer still to nancy for some reason), comments that “she probably doesn’t have any powers anyway”, which sarah (in all white) does a show of power by calling a storm&striking a tree branch to almost hit them. sarah says “be careful. you don’t wanna end up like nancy”. so the implication is now She’s kinda evil bc women having power=bad. &even though bonnie&rochelle lost their powers its still Bad that they ever had them. but sarah gets to keep her powers bc she was Born w/ them&will use them “for good”. i rly hate that sarah’s whole arc was set up that she was an outsider with self hatred that made her push others away. &she ends up… loosing herself by invoking the spirit, with no friends, pushing others away because “everything i touch turns to shit”&her friends ended up being evil anyways bc every woman is a rival to each other. gr8. what a feminist movie.
1:35:58-aaaaaaaaaaand the cherry on top: nancy’s binding in white ribbon was actually………. foreshadowing to her being locked up in an insane asylum. what is it fucking 1920. laughing&screaming&getting sedated without consent to end off the movie. rly capping off the movie like that. what evar.
DELETED SCENES:
scene 1:
0:00-off the bat i think this scene (as well as the other) were necessary as it actually shows sarah getting closer to the others in the group, as well as them “turning” on/away from nancy. bonnie wears a white undergown and is on white sheets, sarah’s color of influence. bonnie also sits turned in on herself, reflecting her hidden personality.
0:50-bonnie coming into her element of fire and overcoming her need for obscurity to confide in sarah that she knows she can heal her, referring to how she was the one to propose sarah as the coven’s fourth. when coming out of her shell, she shows herself to be emotional, loyal, and caring, all traits associated with fire. it also shows the effect of all the medical trauma on her, her turning to the craft as her only hope against the self hatred she has ingrained within herself.
1:31-sarah shows reluctance to take a leadership role in the group, but performs the ritual anyways out of compassion, in contrast to nancy leading readily out of a need for control.
1:42-this conversation is also framed with a lamp (fire) behind bonnie’s head, and a window of trees (earth) behind sarah’s.
1:50-when the camera pulls back after sarah agrees, we can see a large decoration of fake plants next to the lamp, showing their two elements intertwining as they grow closer.
2:01-sarah makes the sign of the pentacle across her before she begins the ritual, silently calling upon all of the elements through an earth-associated sign. all of the elements are present within the scene as well, with the primary tool being burning sage (a closed practice but. representative Again of earth and fire coming together in this scene), and the weather outside turning to rain (water) and ending with the wind (air) blowing open the windows.
2:35-she extinguishes the sage in water and it then turns deep red. however i could not find any info on if sage Actually dyes water like that as the only info i’m finding is just “NEVER EXTINGUISH IT IN WATER”. if its artificial, it could be a jesus parallel (turning water to wine) that mirrors nancy’s parallel of walking on water later.
2:47-sarah calls on a goddess, again in contrast to nancy’s masculine manul. earth is also considered a feminine element, and air a masculine one.
3:09-bonnie’s winces of pain mirrors her procedure at the clinic later.
scene 2:
0:00-this scene sets up the group dynamics of act 2 far better than the movie fares without it. no reason to have cut this. the group all wearing white in their palettes again reflects sarah’s growing influence at this point, with rochelle wearing the most, and her being the one to disagree with nancy most vocally after she arrives. bonnie’s white is hidden in her outfit under black, a reference to her still being the type to often hide her emotions, and her still having loyalty to nancy as a friend, concerned about the binding possibly backfiring.
0:19-brief pov shot from nancy shows her perspective from the shadows, an outsider to her own coven now, forgotten and unneeded.
0:42-bonnie saying that nancy seems “out of control” hits deeper than intended for nancy, as her driving motivation is that she feels like she has no control. her lashing out, from nancy’s view, is her trying to get control BACK instead of losing it.
0:48-rochelle takes the most genuine approach to nancy, water being The emotional element and able to see things from her perspective and empathize. she also hints at her eating disorder, an arc that was unfortunately completely obliterated from the plot after the casting of a black actress (when really i think rochelle especially lacks screen time, dialogue, and backstory out of everyone else in the group- we never even see her family).
0:57-unfortunately rochelle keeps talking, and nancy gets offended at her comparing her to the old women exploited for their problems on t.v. and snaps.
1:03-nancy’s breakdown is systematic, harsh, and conceptual, very air-y. her opening with “i have saved you all from oblivion” very much shows how she views the dynamic of power vs. powerless- and she believes that the powerless are as good as gone, and that she is rapidly losing what little power she has. she goes through and to each of them says what she will think hurt them the most, and reinforces that she is their savior with the ability to revoke their salvation at any moment of disobedience. very “continuing the cycle of abuse” of her.
1:54-showing her cards here, nancy says “i leave you alone for two minutes with her, and what do you do? you turn your backs on me just like everybody else has ever done!”. which really just sums up her character motivations entirely.
2:22-nancy makes it clear here that this is especially painful, not just because they’re talking about her behind her back, but because they don’t actually want to “help” her- they just want to take her power away from her. they don’t seek to get her help to deal with her problems (despite rochelle’s initial comment), but to simply bind her behind her back.
2:40-rochelle and bonnie stay behind nancy as sarah goes on her own path. rochelle’s white shirt is hidden behind the framing by nancy’s shoulder, and bonnie covers up the white in her outfit with a notebook, visually showing their loyalty returning to nancy.
