While I’m very happy at wfm’s success and how it’s drawn so many people into Gundam (me included), it’s so upsetting we have to do this song and dance and explain how to “interpret” the explicit narrative that Sulemio is a real romance despite “them never kissing or saying I love you.” The whole fucking point of Gundam and the Newtype story is “understanding each other without misconception,” and while Witches aren’t able to really do that the same way Newtypes are, the core story of Suletta is getting people to truly understand her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sulemio’s resolution is Miorine finally “understanding“ that Suletta WANTS to save her family and Miorine revealing her “ugly” and disheveled self she’s hidden from everyone, only getting a taste of it when she invited Suletta to her room in ep 4. Suletta “understands” her mother and Aerial’s betrayal after Quinnharbor and that they do love her, just that they think she’ll be fine separated from them and to not involve her in their machinations. Chuchu’s entire arc is the perfect example of this theme: she goes from violently hating Spacians and picking fights with them on a regular basis to basically becoming Suletta’s older sister and rescuing hundreds of Spacian students and providing food and aid to them. The tragedy of Norea and El5n is amplified by this theme since only El5n could possibly “understand” Norea’s agony and existential anguish in considering herself a living casualty of war as a Gundam pilot. What’s made worse is she “understands” El5n empathizes with her and truly cares for her moments before being killed by Cathedra after her rampage. Hell, the Space Magic solution of Gwitch is a direct reference to Unicorn where the Gundams project the love interest's voice throughout the Earth Sphere so that they can communicate directly with the common person.
If you’ve watched Unicorn as many times as I have, you know they drill this fucking theme into your head every chance you give them but similarly to gwitch, there’s no kiss scene or “I love you” scene. Gundam, and Sunrise in general, has a long-standing tradition of demonstrating the primary romance through the dialogue and actions of the characters. I have never seen anyone question if Audrey and Banagher are in a relationship despite them never having any kind of kiss scene or a scene where they utter “I love you.” Of course, they were kind of meant to parallel Amuro and Sayla, but the dynamic between Suletta and Miorine are almost identical: Gundam pilot who has to protect the Princess from scheming enemies on both the enemy and their side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The point of this post is that you have to be able to possess an ounce of media literacy in order to understand the sheer plot and character interactions of most popular Gundam media. Now that a lot more people are interested in picking up this franchise, I’m BEGGING you to really think about these shows and movies beyond the mech fights. Every Gundam series has something you can pick apart and the first step in analyzing that is to understand some of the core ideas of Gundam. We don’t kiss here. We’re too high brow to have that so we have characters say shit like “promise you’ll come with me to Earth,” since it means Miorine intends to incorporate Suletta into her future and in her desires or calling the Princess of Zeon Audrey despite her government name being Mineva. Though it may have been forceful, Banagher understood what Mineva wanted and vocalized that by referring to her as her cover name until the end of the OVA.
I do also want to add, this theme is why the Blowjob Brothers exist in nearly every incarnation of Gundam ever. Once you learn how to interpret characters' actions and how they demonstrate love, you'll understand why the fandom has so many gay ships with varying degrees of "authenticity" or canon-ness. The difference with Suletta and Miorine is that it's unabashedly explicit and the focus of Gwitch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, any fellow Gwitch enthusiasts who are dipping their toes into 0079 or IBO or any other property as their second Gundam experience, please understand that a LOT of narrative devices and characters are direct references or homages to the past and trying to catch up on it all is like trying to integrate yourself into a religion you converted into. There's a lot of unwritten practices and beliefs that you have to learn and teach yourself, especially since there's psychos out there in the fandom.
(this entire post was spurred on by a dipshit twitter user arguing Sulemio wasn't the goal of gwitch and they changed it mid-hiatus to appeal to the wokes asdfklafd;ljkasf. Anyways Chamuro is real and gundam loves doing polycules this is unironically true)

I'm not gonna pretend I have anything super new or innovative to say about Mobile Suit Gundam. It's one of the most-analyzed anime ever, and I pale in comparison to some of the people who *have* analyzed it, but here I am, thinking about it regardless.
For context, I am watching this as part of a---as she called it---"comet swap" with my good friend @charaznablespeteevee, where I watch a mecha anime she is obsessed with (Gundam) and she watches one I am obsessed with (Code Geass). I'm not sure if I'm going to write a big long post like this about every episode (since I'm going to *try* to watch at least one per day, that would get quite exhausting), but I am liveblogging it more informally over on the worst website on Earth, if you're willing to put up with that Nazi-infested hellhole long enough to read some posts from yours truly.
In any case, Gundam and Code Geass. are many differences between these, the main ones being that Code Geass is more recent and also not widely hailed as a masterpiece of its form. It does *draw* notably from Gundam though despite having very different artistic aims and a different tone, so watching this makes sense in a way. I spent way too much of my teenagerhood obsessed with Lelouch, and now I'm watching the anime that his archetypal grandfather came from. (Goddess have mercy on my soul.)
My experience with Gundam as a franchise prior to this is very limited, but I do have some. For reference, I have seen all of:
Gundam 00, back when it aired on the SyFy channel when they had an anime block many years ago. I really liked this as a teenager but I don't remember it super well.
The Witch From Mercury, lesbian space combat, with a notable Code Geass staff connection. WFM was not perfect or anything but I loved it a lot and Suletta is very dear to me. I actually bought an Aerial gunpla a few months ago that is currently sitting unassembled in my closet.
the first Gundam 0079 compilation movie. Now, it might seem weird that I've seen this and am now going back to watch the TV series. But, while I remember the general outline of what happened, I was SUPER sick when I watched it, and I only remember what happened really, really vaguely. While I have some idea of the general outline of what's to come, I'm mostly going in genuinely blind.
like 4 or 5 episodes of Victory Gundam, which I liked but kind of fell off of. So we're giving the franchise a proper second go here.
I'm a mecha fan more generally, and I'll get into some of that as I write these, but for now that's the relevant stuff.
Anyway, my main impression of 0079's first episode is actually a structural one. It's REALLY well put together. We introduce the setting, we introduce our main characters, and we introduce the main conflict, all very economically and with a lot of style---more style than some shows with significantly less room to work with manage, in fact---and I'm immediately invested in the fate of our main character, Amuro Ray.
From what I gather here (and a little bit from outside information), my impression is that of a kid who loses his innocence very, very rapidly over the course of this story. Here, the space-hab-thing he lives on is attacked, and he ends up in the cockpit of an experimental superweapon called a Gundam (maybe you've heard of them?). I LOVE how the Gundam is framed here, like some kind of genuinely scary war machine. It's an intentionally othering effect i mostly associate with later mecha anime, especially those with outright monstrous mecha like Evangelion or even The Big O, so to see it here in such a comparatively early series in the genre is impressive.
The episode's climax sees him kill two soldiers from the enemy nation of Zeon, but it's not a triumphant thing, really. He's portrayed as kind of not really knowing what he's doing, flailing around inside this gigantic walking tank / mechanical war god. But then when he *does* figure things out, well, he has to deal with the fact that he just killed two dudes. Going by the cliffhangery ending here, it doesn't seem like his troubles are over, either.

Watching 0079 after watching Gundam shows like G, Seed, and G Witch is really funny cause Amuro fucking sucks at piloting the Gundam. Amuro is barely surviving every fight by virtue of the Gundam just being Really Fucking Tough while Kira Yamato has an instant win sicko mode and Suletta Mercury has not known defeat since age 4.

Welcome to Char Corner!
Hi there, fellow Char owners! My name is Astra, I use any pronouns but mostly she/they, and I raise Homo aznablii (also known as Chars) for a living! I have worked at multiple Char shelters, and own multiple Chars myself. Here's a quick intro to them!
(Plus, some tips I shared in the comments of a Strange Aeons video about clown husbandry:)
Tumblr media
Mars
Male 0079
Age: 4
Mars is a new addition to the family. I picked him up from a Char shelter back in July. He was surrendered to the shelter after his owners couldn't take care of them. PSA: Purebred 0079s are not good starter Chars! They need constant stimulation to keep from engaging in the classic Char pastime of destroying everything in your home, along with 0079s needing to be disciplined regularly, (without force! please do not hit or yell at your char, as they will distrust you and be more likely to indiscriminately attack you. i like to use spray bottles) to actually make them listen to you. If you REALLY like 0079s but don't have any experience raising Chars, get a 0079/Quattro cross. While Mars can have an attitude sometimes and has tried to escape a few times when I let him outside for more than a few minutes, he's a really sweet Char. Fun fact: he's the same 0079 Char from the Garfield story I shared above
---
Hallie Jr.
Female Quattro/CCA mix
Age: 3
Hallie Jr. is one of the Char pups from the story I shared above. Her mother, a Quattro named Hallie, was one of the first Chars I raised, and was a general sweetheart. Sadly, last May, Hallie was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 17, and I had no choice but to end her life in a humane way. I'll never forget the day I took her home from the shelter all those years ago, and how she was so scared on the ride back home... Anyways, Hallie Jr. is chaotic. That's it. I remember when I first took Mars home and Hallie Jr. gave him a nice chomp on the shoulder. What a way to roll in the welcome wagon... She's also given me a few nips, too, and almost attacked another Char at the Char park (my pride and joy as a char owner. /s) Anyways, I always say that Quattros are the ideal starter breed of Char, due to their mostly-docile temperament. CCAs, however, need a great deal of training and socialization, which I know a lot of casual Char owners can't afford to provide. Sadly, this has led to many CCAs turning aggressive and getting the breed as a whole classified as dangerous in a lot of jurisdictions. (They're kinda like the "bully breeds" of dogs.)
---
Meteor
Male Full Frontal
Age: 27
While I normally do not condone getting Full Frontals due to the problems with the breed (see above), a friend gave me Meteor because they were moving to a place which did not allow Chars in the lease (an unfortunate truth in many places) and I couldn't say no. Even if he is getting on in the years (the average Char lifespan is 33 years), he is still one of the most amazing Chars I have ever taken care of. However, last month he started to become more lethargic and nipped me when I tried to pet him (an action he usually enjoys). I'm planning to take him to the vet soon to see what's up with him.
---
Ceres
Female mutt (with 0079 and CCA features)
Age: 1½ years
Last but not least, Ceres was a stray Char pup who was rejected by her mother. I found her in my front lawn in critical condition and I just had to take her in because I couldn't let a newborn Char die like that, and bottle-fed her and nursed her back to health. She's currently in her "teen phase" (Chars fully mature at 2 years old) and is starting to test her boundaries. She often gets zoomies and even scratched Hallie Jr. once (she's probably learned her lesson now). However, she's still as sweet as the day I took her in!
Random Char facts and tips:
Chars only started being imported to the western world in the past 25 years. Before that, they were popular pets in Japan and other East Asian countries, hitting their stride in the late seventies, although a small portion of Chars were imported to Italy around the early eighties in the hopes of starting a fad, although they never caught on back then.
CHARS AND CLOWNS DO NOT GO TOGETHER!! I've seen so many Chars get surrendered to shelters because they attacked or even killed clowns, one of their NATURAL PREY SOURCES. Come on.
Chars are facultative carnivores. In the wild, they prey on not only clowns, but also deer and other large herbivores. But domesticated Chars will still be as happy eating small animals such as live mice as they would chasing down a deer in the wild.
Please do not keep attack/guard Chars, especially CCAs. The training to turn them into one cannot be done in a way that does not involve abuse. Please get a functioning security system.
You may have noticed that Chars are horny AF. It's a survival strategy: Chars mate with anything and everything as wild mother Chars have a tendency to reject or even eat their offspring. Thankfully for Char breeders, domesticated Chars have had this behavior almost entirely bred out of them.
Chars are pregnant for 6 months and usually give birth to a litter of 4-9 Char pups.
Anyways, good luck in your own Char breeding and owning adventures!
~ Astra

For those of you who are not following me on bad website twitter, yesterday I watched the Shuichi Ikeda live performance where he narrates the history of the Universal Century as Char.
It's the original audio source for of one of my favourite Gundam-related youtube videos, "Death of Char Aznable, Birth of Full Frontal":
youtube
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this is the only part of it that has been subbed in English. The full thing is available to watch on niconico if you know Japanese, though! Or if you just want to listen to Char's voice set to music for an hour or two, interspersed with clips from classic Gundam.
Ikeda narrates through 0079, Zeta, and CCA, up to the start of Unicorn when he transitions to speaking as Frontal. When he's done, the video ends with a little Unicorn montage set to music.
This is part one of five. If you're unfamiliar with nicovideo's layout, the links to the other parts are in the description under the video title. It's above the video on desktop, below on mobile.

If I may grovel for my life for a second. I would like to clarify that what I meant about 0079 was that (imo) the show is better approached as its own finite story, than the first chapter of an unsinkable multimedia franchise, unlike how people talk about stuff like a new hope or w/e.
whether or not this saves my hid I would also like to say I hope you had, or are going to have a nice day! :)
ahhhhhh nyaruhodo. I’m kind of on the fence with this bc obviously 0079 is fantastic on its own, but I love how you can clearly see not just tomino wrestling with the behemoth he created by wanting to chart unexplored territory in anime when you go from 0079 into zeta, and then the world and themes expand and become more textured when you go from zeta -> ZZ -> cca. (even into unicorn and narrative if we’re being generous and including stuff that wasn’t written by tomino and also wants to explore gundam’s legacy both in and out of universe.) that’s something you can’t quite get out of just one ~50 episode/4 cour anime. (and gundam AGE tried! and it was bad!!)
on the other hand, good god the times when both audience members and other creators tackle gundam and they really don’t get it and completely miss the point of what made 0079 not just great but keeps it relevant even four decades later is just so So infuriating.
gundam 0079 from 1979 says there’s good and bad people on both sides of the war and that being a powerful soldier won’t solve everything, while gundam SEED from 2002 says Only people allied with the protagonist are good people, everyone else is cartoonishly evil and we can solve racism (but keep eugenics since that’s what makes our protagonist special) with just one spaceship and two good mobile suits with backpacks. three spaceships in the sequel.
gundam 0079 says child soldiers necessary in this specific circumstance bc it’s for survival and it’s ultimately bad because every episode ends not with Cool Robot moment, but with some tragic note that reminds us War Is Bad. gundam IBO from 2015 says child soldiers that aren’t the protagonist and friends are bad, and our protagonist who is a sociopath and that makes him the Best child soldier in the setting is the coolest, even. and then in the second season turns around and says “you’re dumb for Ever thinking child soldiers are cool, GOTTEM.” because outright contradicting your messaging and insulting your audience that actually liked your show makes for Deep Writing (tm) .
and g-witch wasn’t perfect but still a Pretty Good gundam entry, but the fact that they’re following up g-witch with a SEED movie only now when the outline has been complete for a decade means sunrise/bandai namco is banking on g-witch’s acting as a cushion in case that movie flops super hard and there’s a nonzero chance they rushed g-witch’s conclusion because they wanted to pivot all that attention and resources to SEED and AAAGHHHHH I hate gundam being an unsinkable media franchise and wish it died gracefully with Turn A Gundam back in 1999 sometimes!!!
all that being said, your hide is safe, this ask was a good one, and I hope! your day! is also going well too!!

Hi, have you seen the og of Mobile Suit Gundam? Char/Amuro is my all time otp (sadly they're not canon, but their strong bond is there).....
I want to watch a lot of Gundam but I've barely gotten started. I've gotten to episode 4 in the og and the end of episode 6 in IBO. It's been a bit of a challenge making time for it, though. I both dislike missing so much as a word and I'm dyslexic. With all my pausing and rewinding it takes me something like an hour to get through a 22 minute episode.
That said, I have liked what I've seen so far but I'm not quite far enough into 0079 to have formed any substantial opinions. Other than Haro being my favorite character, that is. /hj

Designs for a HS/Modern AU I'm writing
These are the four "main" characters aka the ones with the most focus, but there are some other characters (mainly from 0079/Zeta/ZZ) that show up
If you're wondering about Amuro's name, his parents divorced when he was 8 (due to disagreements over lifestyles and Kamaria cheating) and just a few weeks prior to the main story, his custody agreement changes from living with Kamaria full-time (with Tem visiting on the weekends) to living with Tem full-time (also i am a Good Dad Tem truther, canon doesn't exist and no Tem slander is allowed here!)
Fraw lives with her single mother (her dad died from medical complications while Fraw's mother was pregnant with her) and her grandfather (her mom's dad, moved in because he didn't want to enter assisted living) and in the very first chapter Fraw's mom agrees to foster three kids ages 7, 6 and 4 (these are the kids ⬇️)

Fraw also has three older siblings who have all gone off to college at this point: Liz, Ethan and Melissa
(bonus: I designed Kamille in fucking Gacha Life 2 💀)
(Fraw's previously-mentioned older siblings too, I am being consumed by the cringe)

#OnThisDay: Apr 7th, 2019
Title: Gundam BEYOND - Murumo and Pocoyo
The year from April 7th, 1979 to this same date of 2019, and now 2024 (as 45th year). It's the celebration of our beloved and one of the most iconic mecha robots in the anime universe! Yes! I bet you know some of you G-Fanatics that "Mobile Suit Gundam" becomes 'BEYOND' 40th Anniversary! 🤖😁
So in order to do so, I would like to make 4 artworks based on the 'Gundam Beyond' wallpapers from the "Gundam info" website. You can go check it out to see all four wallpapers, it's awesome: [CLICK ME!]
Now with being said and like-wised, I made this artwork inspired from the 1st photo I saw; When Amuro on the RX-78-2 Gundam and Banagher on the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam finally met in the same Universal Century. (Yeah rumor / official say that Amuro died in the events of Char's Counterattack, but let's not argue or split hairs...) And like I said, I drew RX-78-2 Murumo 🥁⭐ and Unicorn Pocoyo 🔵👶 with the T-Shaped Psychoframe 🟢✨ in the middle and glowing light green lines and sparkles around them.
Well that's much about it, I'll make 3 more inspiring artworks from the 'Gundam Beyond' this month of April before it ends.
BTW: I haven't drew Murumo (my favorite character in Mirmo!) in a while since.
Nevertheless, Happy 40th Anniversary Gundam! No, make it Happy "45th Anniversary" Gundam! 🤖🥳🎊
