every day i learn something new about logan sargeant and his racing career, not just about his performance in f1 but in f2 and previous series, too. and every day i end up so sad because he genuinely has so so much potential and can do so much but he keeps being give a poor hand of cards. this guy out qualified his teammate in f2 TEN TO FOUR. and who was his teammate?? liam lawson. liam joined redbull’s driver academy in february of 2019 while logan only got to join an f1 team’s driver academy in october of 2021. that team was williams. which, as we know, hasn't exactly been the best performing team in recent years. oscar piastri got to join an f1 team’s driver academy in january of 2020 (the renault sport academy, later rebranded as the alpine academy). liam and oscar both got the opportunity to do f1 tests for YEARS prior to their f1 debuts in 2023. liam had 4 and a half years of experience in f1 cars before 2023. oscar had 3 years of experience in f1 cars before 2023. even if it was just testing and practice sessions, it's still something.
what did logan get? one measly fp2 session, post-season testing, and then jumped right in to pre-season testing in 2023. he already had a seat in williams then, so with the experience from before the pre-season testing in 2023 he got to do maybe 800km of testing in an f1 car. the others — in this case i mean oscar, liam, and heck even nyck de vris — had opportunities to drive f1 cars and gain experience for YEARS before logan. if you look at nyck de vris: he got signed to the mclaren young driver programme in 2010. he joined the audi sport racing academy in 2016. granted, he left the mclaren programme in before the 2019 season and left audi after the 2019 season, too. but he then went to mercedes as a reserve driver and tester for 2020 and afterwards. this means he got just about a DECADE AND A HALF of teams putting their time and energy into training him to join f1.
logan got a year. one. single. fucking year. that is entirely incomparable to the other rookies from 2023, who had so much more experience before hand. and yet logan was jumped into f1 and the expectations were so high for a guy who hasn't had the chance to train and learn and gain experience.
and yet when we look at the 2022 f2 season, logan sargeant, a rookie, was 1 point off from his teammate —the one and only liam lawson — scoring p4 in the championship. he outqualified his teammate 10 to 4. he was the first american to win an f2 race (that is, of course, following the rebrand from gp2 to f2, but regardless, that’s still an important thing to note and an achievement of his that should be celebrated).
logan sargeant has so much potential and if only williams would show him a little more faith unlike what they’ve been doing, if only they’d give him the same upgrades as alex, if only they wouldn’t force him to drive a car 15kg overweight from that of his teammate’s car, if only they wouldn’t force him to use outdated rear and front wings from the season prior. then perhaps he would have a chance to show what he can do. perhaps if he wasn’t stuck in a team with a crap car who have shown zero faith (which has been vehemently obvious since the circus in australia) in him and made him absolutely miserable, a shell of himself — which you can clearly see in recent interviews and photos of him — then maybe he’d be able to show how good he really is. and maybe if williams hadn’t been so adamant about taking him out of f2 so quickly and let him develop for one more year, we’d be seeing headlines that say “logan sargeant, first american f1 driver on the podium since michael andretti in 1993.” and perhaps we could even see him winning races.
no matter what someone says about his current f1 performances — though most base that solely off of where he ends up on the grid rather than looking at his actual driving and seeing how good he is as a driver considering the crap circumstances he’s in — logan sargeant is a better driver than what everyone says. he is trying so insanely hard to get a car that is miles off from the rest of the field to place as high as humanly possible. no one can say that if you put another driver in that car that logan is driving they'd be doing better than he is now. the fact is, they wouldn't be. he's been given an absolute tractor and is expected to score points when that car isn't built for getting in the points. and yet logan managed to get p10 in the miami sprint race — which should be recognized and commended. because he was in an awful car and he absolutely shined that day. that was just the start of showing what he could do. but he hasn't been given the same resources as alex, those being the upgrades, so what more can he do compared to what he's doing now?
and i am actually sitting here crying as i type this because this is a driver who is giving it his all even when the entire world is against him, even when his entire TEAM is against him, and he is persevering to the best of his abilities. and i know exactly what it’s like to sit here, wanting to reach for your dreams and show everyone how good you are, but to have only your closest friends and family on your side, rooting for you. what it’s like to look everywhere around you and see everyone calling you crap and saying you should quit and that you aren’t and never will be good enough. to look around and see your closest friends and family cheering for you, yet feeling like crap because you aren't doing as well as you would want, feeling inferior to everyone around you.
news flash: logan sargeant is and will always be good enough. he just needs the opportunity to show it, and williams is ruining that for him.
and yes, i will defend him with my life. people who try to say otherwise can try to do the same hours — the WEEKS — worth of research that i’ve done about logan and his career because he IS a good driver and HE DESERVES BETTER.
any hate comments towards logan will be deleted, because i have neither the time nor the energy to deal with that and argue with logan haters. i've said all of what i know and can remember about him and his career above, and will add what i can as time goes on and i remember something else or learn something new. if you have the time to hate on logan, you have the time to do your research and examine the fact that he has the potential to do well, but is not in a position for that because of the abhorrent circumstances he is currently in.
thank you for coming to my ted talk. edit: i'd also really recommend reading this twitter thread!! it goes into some more depth on logan and his f2 / f1 career, and even a little bit about his f3 career. it's very informative and articulates much of logan's career and why he is a better driver than many believe very well. https://x.com/herrocult/status/1795747913588761027
#logan sargeant#f1#williams racing#ls2#logie sargeant#logan sargeant rants#i will actually go to war for him lmao#like genuinely he deserves sm better#and people can't help but look just at the surface level rather than really looking into him and his career and analyzing his driving#it's so ARAGHAGRHAGRHRAGH#i will always defend him.#logiebear#YES I CALL HIM LOGIE BEAR AFFECTIONATELY BECAUSE HE IS SO DEAR TO ME#logie bear#i've literally fought my teacher over him i'm that adamant about defending him

10 Useful Things That Front End Developers Should Learn In 2020
Front end developers are in high demand, find out what skills leading front end web design and development experts use the most.
2020 is here with us and from the look of things, it is going to be a great year for front end web design and everything to do with front end development. Unlike the recent times where front end developers in their space just had to something on jQuery, HTML or CSS, front end developers need to take the bull by its horns and face the dynamic ecosystem of skills necessary for developing libraries, tools and frameworks so that they can master the craft.
Delving into the past, it is evident that the past couple of years has blessed individuals in the front end development space with some amazing new frameworks and libraries including VueJS, Svelte and ReactJS that make use of JavaScript for powering up to major web applications. As a developer, you will find this article quite interesting while it sheds more light on some of the few core things you should strive to focus on to up your developing game in case you are an entry-level front end developer or already have a grip of things. Nowadays, there are many IT job opportunities for those who want to apply.
Here are the top 10 things to get you started this year.
JAMstack
This is a combination of JavaScript, API and markup. This combination is an interesting approach of developing apps and websites for purposes of bettering their performance and at the same time scaling down the costs involved. It functions to offer a developer a better experience while providing higher security. This makes learning this an interesting objective because all of them don’t depend on a webserver to function. For instance, if you take a look at a monolithic app that has some reliance on Node.js or Ruby back end or any site that is developed with such a server-side CMS as WordPress or Drupal, you will realise that all of them are not JAMstack developed. However, to learn working with JAMstack, some of the following best practices are crucial:
Automated builds: The use of automated builds is near perfect because every instance of markup is prebuilt with programs like cloud services or webhooks.
Instant cache validation: You definitely have to find a way of learning anything to do with instant cache validation because at that point any site goes live, it should be your responsibility to ensure that your CDN has the capacity to handle any form of instant cache purges for any kind of change to get visible.
Serving your project on a CDN: Since there is no need for a server, you can serve the whole of your project on a CDN, which gives you the ability to unlock performance and speeds that are unbeatable.
Atomic deploys: It would be in your best interest to avoid any case of inconsistent states by redeploying a large number of files in a large project. This practice will come in handy since it waits for every file to be uploaded just before any changes finally go live.
GraphQL
2020 should not pass before you get your way around working with GraphQL. This is despite the fact that for a long time now many people have considered REST as the effective measure for the design of web APIs since it offers concepts like stateless servers. This is because RESTful APIs are seemingly inflexible because they do not easily adapt to any changing clients wishing to access them. That is why Facebook developed GraphQL to fight the challenges that many developers face while dealing with RESTful APIs in the process of web development. The program will enable developers to send a query to its server with the data requirements, which would then return corresponding data with JSON object.
Testing
As an entry-level front end web developer, you should learn on the importance of testing because no code that is untested should go into production since they are mandatory in commercial projects. There are different tests you should keep in mind including:
Integration tests, which test any form of interaction between components.
End-to-end tests, which are instrumental in testing full-blown user flows in browsers.
Unit tests, which are essential in testing functions in isolation or a single component.
Soft Skills
As a front end developer, you might e tempted into overlooking the acquisition of skills but mark you they are just as important because they help in not only communication with team members but also help in the understanding of the technicalities of things. The most common soft skills you should learn to acquire in 2020 include:
Patience.
Problem-solving.
Teamwork.
Empathy.
Open-mindedness.
Communication.
Time management.
Creativity
Accountability
Git
This a form of a standardized version of control in web development. Therefore, it is only necessary that as a front end developer you strive to know and understand some of the basic concepts and workflows in order to effectively work in all sizes of teams plus understanding the underlying concepts. Some of the popular commands to know include:
git add
git config
git clone
git commit
git init
git branch
git push
git pull
Frameworks
There is a need for developers, especially those making use of JavaScript frameworks to focus on Vue and React since, in the recent years, these two have seen tremendous growth, especially in enterprise projects because the past year has sen two giants, VueJS and ReactJS starring a number of stars as compared to Svelte and Angular.
Progressive Web Apps (PWA)
PWA will soon catch up since more and more businesses and companies are choosing to go the PWA way over choosing native apps because they get a richer mobile experience from them. This has been mainly bolstered by the fact that PWAs are becoming more reliable because they can work without an internet connection with instant loading capabilities. These PWAs are also engaging in terms of user experience with that native-app feeling. This means that users can easily utilise the use of service workers for functionalities offline plus a full-screen experience that is enabled by a web-app manifest.
Code Editors/IDEs
VS Code by Microsoft will seemingly continue prevailing in 2020 as the go-to editor just as it did in 2019 for most front end developers. This is because the editor offers developers such IDE-like features as highlighting and code completion with the ability to extend infinitely through its extension marketplace, which is what makes the editor more appealing. Therefore, some great extensions to take note of include:
Prettier.
ESLint.
npm.
Vetur.
Live Sass Compiler.
JavaScript (ES6) code snippets.
Beautify.
Liver Server.
CSS Peek.
Debugger for Chrome.
Static Site Generators
These generators effectively combine the power of single-page applications and that of server-side rendering, which is very instrumental in initial load time and SEO. Therefore, if you believe you are serious in the front end developing, then you should consider projects like Gridsome and Nuxt which are Vue-based and Next and Gatsby, which are React-based. These projects will definitely draw some heat in 2020 since they come with such features as module bundlers, markdown support, integrated test runners and more.
Clean Code
The ability to write clean code is increasingly becoming more desirable and in high demand in many organisations. This means that learning the fundamentals of clean coding in order to strategically place yourself in 2020. Clean code should not only be pleasing to read and elegant but also focused. This means, as a clean coder, you will have to learn to:
Create codes that speak for themselves without the need for comments.
Create codes with functions that have few arguments and small in nature.
Create names for classes, methods, functions and variables that are meaningful.
All these things should have you encouraged to get busy to see to it that you have successful developing in 2020.

Nicole’s rambling: In the defense of Oliver Ulliva and age gaps

Okay, first let me remind you - this is my POV on the book as a whole. Everyone has their way of understanding of what exactly happened in Call me by your name (the novel) and you don’t have to agree with everything I am about to say - WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE.
Second thing - I’m going to be using translations and page references to my copy of the book - that being the first Czech edition from the year 2018, translated by Lucie Podhorná because it varies from the OG book itself (for example, when Elio talks to Vimini, my copy says "when did he tell you?" instead of "when had he tell her?"; it's just small nuances). Also, that's why I'm referring to Oliver as ‘Oliver Ulliva’, because my copy canonically confirms this being his last name - it refers to his last name being ‘Ulliva’ a few times since Mafalda cracks his egg open.
What made me even wanna write this rant? I don’t wanna in any way talk about the author or the director, or the actors. But... Well, quite a few things - especially the statement that their relationship was predatory since the very begging (simply because Oliver is seven years older) and that it was practically a ‘consensual ra*e’ and... Listen.
1. The Age Gap
Most of these were from the American audience who viewed the movie - but let me explain why Europeans might view this relationship differently and why you might change your opinion about it as well. I am not saying Americans don't do these things as well, but from what I've seen on the forums, etc., it seems to me that European x American view on age gaps is way different.
For the sake of this statement, I interviewed 10 of my European friends - of which were mostly all Czech. Europeans do not see a problem with having a seven-year (and more) age gap between the partners - you rarely find a couple of which both are the same age; three-years being the “standard” gap.
Young people, around 17 - 19, at least in my country, are attracted to older partners for various reasons - some like the intellectual potential of their partner, some are searching for a form of certitude in an older partner having their priorities sorted out and figured out their lives and what they want to do with themselves; whether we are talking about m/m, w/m, w/w or a non-binary relationship. One of my friends told me she searches older partners solely because they feel more protected by them. It's the sense of serenity, a different feeling of connection and different understanding to your other half.
I've talked to four of my friends, who both have partners of the same age or max. 1-year gap and even they told me they absolutely can see themselves dating a partner older by minimally five years. So, it's not a controversial thing here, really.
Maybe it’s more common in here, but rarely anyone frowns upon such relationships. At the time of my first relationship, my first partner was five years older than me - and I honestly couldn’t see myself with someone my age. From my experience, the relationships and bonds have a higher probability to last longer (we had a beautiful relationship of three years), it isn’t only driven by hormonal side of things and such, the feelings can develop into something more meaningful than just simple and shallow lust. More for that matter - most of these age-gap relationships didn't end extra-bad breakups and the partners tended to continue seeing each other as friends.
When I interviewed my friends, asking them about the length of these relationships, it was never less than a year. Usually, they said that they learned a ton of new stuff about themselves and having a healthy, normal relationship than from dating someone their age. So... Yeah. I guess that personal, first-hand experience is what makes us see the relationship for its good and bad, but still assures us not to perceive the relationship as predatory.
Now, you might say that while were living in the 2020s', Call me by your name took place in 1983 - and guess what? It was written in the year 2007. Does that mean something? The answer is - no. My grandma met my grandpa in the 80s' (I asked her about this as well and they have 14 years gap; my other grandma and grandpa met at the end of 80s' and the start of 90s' and they, as well, have 8 years between them) and by this, you can see that the situation is more or less the same as it was.
For all of the above, I can see why Elio fell for Oliver so quickly. First and foremost - he mentions Oliver being older like... Three, four times in a book that has word count 76.996? Elio doesn't care about age - it's a story about two human beings falling in love. It's not trying to research the problem of age and such. Stop judging the story for the wrong reason, ffs.
2. The 'consensual ra*e' argument:
Another thing I've encountered is the audience calling the story 'consensual ra*e'... Let me elaborate and tell you why you're wrong. In America, the age of consent is 16 - 18. In Europe, we have the age of consent established at 15 (the lowest being Estonia with 14) and you are a lawful adult at 18 years old. Given that Elio was 17 in the summer and 18 in November, he was already perceived as an adult; given what were his parents like and what relationship they had to him. (Again, I am looking at the story from today's perspective since the audience did as well). He was a man at the time Oliver came to Italy, he was a man at the time he had sex with Marzia, he was a man when he had sex with Oliver and he was a man when he traveled to Rome.
Elio should be perceived as an adult who carries most of his personal responsibility on his shoulders (since you're more than partially punished for the laws you break from the age of fifteen) and if he decides that he wants to be in a sexual relationship with an older man - he can rightfully do so. Surely, the relationship had another big B U T (for some people) - homosexuality and homophobia. And from the historical standpoint, I don't wanna spend too much time over it. The LGBT movement foundation ties back to 1969; given that Italy was in the capitalistic pro-American part of Europe (Czechia was under the Communist regime at the time, so homosexuality was barbarically punished in my country), I think there wasn't a problem with a subtle, not-too-obvious gay relationship. Sure, you couldn't walk into the open and hold hands and such, but you wouldn't get you beheaded.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not an expert on Italian war history and I don't particularly know what happened with Italy after WW2, but I know that in 1985, first LGBT organization got founding from the republic and from that I assume the situation, especially if it would be a subtle relationship, wouldn't be as bad.
In the story, it is hinted that both Sami and Anella were aware of the whole relationship - I mean, come on. Sami knew (since he had the big speech about being corrupted at the age of thirty, ("I think he's better than me, dad".; "And I am sure he would say the same about you, which both of you makes seem like good people." - Call me by your name, page 221)) and Anella perfectly knew at least in the movie - I mean, the car-ride home? Oh, she knew very well and she even told Marzia at the dinner, IMO.
Now tell me why would the relationship be a consensual ra*e? Because it is not bent to accommodate American laws? Because it not an ordinary every-day relationship? In which way is it ra*e? At the age of 17, you are taken as A D U L T who has their responsibilities to fulfil, at least here in Europe.
3. Oliver didn't love Elio as much as Elio loved Oliver:
... What? I mean... What?
Sure, you are seeing the whole story from Elio's eyes and for that, you are more likely to take Elio's side in this matter. In the end, it was Oliver who was getting married, right? And he was the first one to reach out, right? Well... It was a both-sided thing. At the first few pages, Elio says “"Do you want to look at them? "Not now, maybe later." Polite indifference, as if he noticed my out of place zealous effort to make him like me as he pushed me away briskly."; page 12 and on page 18, Elio states "We started - he must've seen the hints way sooner than I did - to flirt.", let alone that Elio describes that probably, Oliver visited his room while he was asleep.
I can see where the opinion that Elio loved Oliver more could've come from - he was young, hasty and captivated by the entirety of Oliver. Since we see the story by his side, Oliver can seem to be the less active out of the two. But trust me, he loved him the same amount, if not more. This was confirmed by both Sami and Vimini -
Page 92, a conversation between Elio and Vimini, Oliver went to the sea with Anchise:
"Do you know where Oliver is?" "I don't know. I thought he went fishing with Anchise." "With Anchise? He's crazy! He almost killed himself the last time!" No response. She was looking at the sun slowly setting down. "You like him, don't you?" "Yes," I responded. "He likes you too. More than you do - I think." You really think so? - No, Oliver does. - When did he tell you? - Not too long ago.
and page 220, when Sami and Elio talk about their trip to Rome:
"Oliver may be very intelligent—," I began. Once again, the disingenuous rise intonation announced a damning but hanging invisibly between us. Anything not to let my father lead me any further down this road. “Intelligent? He was more than intelligent. What you two had had everything and nothing to do with intelligence. He was good, and you were both lucky to have found each other, because you too are good."
Which obviously shows that both of the people who are indirectly watching the relationship between Elio and Oliver blossom in front of their very eyes are aware that both were very much in love. And Vimini, even if she said 'Oliver does think he loves Elio more', she could see that these two are very much attracted to each other. She was spending a lot of time with Oliver throughout his stay in Italy and she was beyond intelligent - these two were an incapable pair idiots compared to her.
So, no, Oliver doesn't love Elio more; he's just not being as childish about it as Elio is. Once more, the age gap is tying into this topic; while Oliver has his 'hot-headed' days, he already went through the phase of being obsessed by someone (or at least the phase being obsessed and letting the surroundings know). He is slightly more mature than Elio, so he just doesn't let himself go that easily.
And I think that he maybe suffers from internalized homophobia - page 224, Oliver talks with Elio as he comes back for Christmas:
"You should leave then. They (Elio's parents) know about us." "I figured so," he responded. "How?" "By the way your father spoke. You're lucky. My father would have me carted me off to a correctional facility."
In this short piece of dialogue, you can see that Oliver's father isn't okay with LGBT (not too much to wonder about, the American society was different than it is now, it wasn't a safe space for queers). And it's plausible that if Oliver had listened to this as he grew up, he got scared when his mind and body reacted to Elio in this way. We can see that for Elio, he lets go for some time; as they sleep in the 2nd part of the book and visit Rome together in the 3rd part of the book. He tried to overcome the fear and simply because he was in love with the boy, he did overcome it.
But you can see the broken shell (which was tore down in Italy) slowly getting together as Oliver gets back to the USA. He, once more, is under the pressure of American society who is not LGBT friendly at the time, his own father would've never supported his decisions regarding his love life, it could cost him his academic career... And for all of these reasons, it was more logical for Oliver to get married. It was his way of putting order back into his life; it was his way of being good as he says Elio.
So, yeah. Here you have it. Oliver was in love, the relationship could benefit both parties and it wasn't a consensual ra*e, thank you very much.

10 Critical Parts of Guidance for Inventors

There are no one-size-fits-all technique inventors can adhere to, and there is no inventing roadmap to success that will certainly work in all instances. Notwithstanding, several things can and should be understood if an inventor is most likely to seek to invent as greater than a pastime.
By understanding some fundamental yet crucial information first you will significantly elevate the possibilities of doing well. This is not to claim that you will not make errors; mistakes are inescapable. You will, nonetheless, make fewer mistakes if you provide thoughtful consideration to what it is you are attempting to do. Running off as well as a beginning without gratitude for the process will prove costly. Before continue reading visit https://theavtimes.com/2020/07/01/amazing-ways-inventhelp-can-assist-you-as-an-inventor/
What complies with are 10 crucial items of recommendations for inventors.
1. Locate Your Passion as an Inventor
If you are a major inventor as well as do not intend on giving up the very first time an obstacle is placed in front of you, then you require to concentrate on something for which you have a true passion. The factor here is basic: The act of inventing takes a great deal of time so you need to like it to make it function. There will certainly be both successes and also setbacks, and any straightforward inventor will inform you of the troubles that surpass the successes. What makes inventing gratifying is the quest for success as well as the challenge. If you are not enthusiastic concerning your invention and also the field of endeavor the possibility you will certainly do well is really low.
2. Inventors Must Become an Expert
The greatest blunder I see all inventors make is they hurry right into a field of venture without actually recognizing what they are entering, or to resolve the trouble in an industry they do not understand. Every brand-new moms and dad all of a sudden end up being an inventor in the baby products area, however exactly how lots of having any kind of idea regarding the difficult government security policies enforced on baby products? While passion is called for, knowledge is additionally needed. A successful inventor will certainly find out whatever they can around each aspect of the area, from the technology to business, to the competition.
3. The Goal is Not Simply to Obtain a Patent
The goal is not to develop an amazing invention, the goal is not to get a patent, the goal is practically universally to generate income. The cool invention and license are a means throughout, not the end in as well as of themselves. Do not obtain so caught up in the imaginative facet of inventing that they fall short to quit and also ask whether they must be investing the time, money, and power into the production. The moral of the story is that the most effective innovation can cause no financial benefit, while often small improvements can lead to financial riches. Therefore, it usually makes good sense for the inventor to concentrate on inventing to fix specific troubles, as well as not just inventing to develop something unique.
4. Method Inventing in a Business Responsible Way
Treat your invention from day one as if it will certainly be hugely effective because by the time you recognize that this is the invention that will certainly be wildly successful it will be as well late unless you have grown the seeks for success early. Don't drop in love with an invention that is falling short when you can relocate on to the next project, which might be the one that will be successful.
You may also like https://azbigmedia.com/business/want-to-be-a-successful-inventor-use-these-ideas-to-help/
5. Don't Underestimate the Importance of a Patent Search
If it looks like just incredibly narrow patent protection will certainly be offered it most likely makes more sense to just relocate on to your following invention because inventors constantly have the next invention. Patent searches are also superb learning devices since they permit you to uncover which aspects of your invention are most likely to add to patentability.
6. Don't Underestimate the Importance of an Internet Search
Over the years I have preached to inventors about the relevance of doing a patent search. Previously in my career, I would certainly listen to from inventors who would certainly say that they browsed the Internet extensively and can not find the invention so they want to relocate ahead. For goodness benefits, if you come up with an invention the initial thing you must do is see whether it exists and can be purchased online or in shops.
7. Certificate Inventions Not Ideas
Without a patent-pending, you do not have anything to license aside from a suggestion that does not have substantial boundaries. When you seek to license a concept alone you can easily scare business. Even listening to a concept without substantial borders as specified in a minimum of a provisional license application can terrify business to the point where some, possibly many, won't intend to do it. Furthermore, the additional you can create your idea the better and better it will certainly end up being. A suggestion may be worth a little to an extremely minimal number of individuals, yet an idea that has taken shape and has become an invention is worth also more as well as to even more people. An invention that has been defined in a provisional patent application is worth more. Famous inventor trainer Stephen Key discusses a submitted provisional license application creating "viewed possession," and he recommends his inventor pupils seriously make the effort as well as the power to define their ideas in concrete methods to create those regarded civil liberties with a provisionary filing. That is exceptional advice.
8. Set a Budget
Inventing and also commercializing can be exceptionally expensive, and also if you are an inventor that implies you are creative and also it is insane to assume that your current invention will be your last. Many inventors have a handful of inventions at any type of one point, so the difficulty they have is selecting which one to seek first. That being the case, and the inescapable truth that you may not rack up with the initial invention you pick, you need to set a budget and also constantly review via the process to ensure that it continues to make good sense to go after the invention. Spending time and money is something, yet spending good cash as well as your time once the search has been demonstrated to likely not be rewarding is absolutely nothing short of a catastrophe. I suggest you establish a spending plan, which you can reassess if points appear to be relocating forward in a favorable instruction. When you reach your budget restriction if there is no favorable energy you need to proceed to what is following. Do not throw your work away, you never know when it might become appropriate or you may have an advancement motivation.
9. Proof of Concept
At some point, it will certainly come to be required to verify your invention, which is called a proof of principle. While it is real that an invention with a proof of principle will be more important than one without such evidence, it is still required for inventors to be cautious. You might begin functioning with an artist who can sketch your invention first on paper.
10. Plausibly Estimate the Size of the marketplace
There is nothing wrong with dreaming, however, there is an extremely vital cautionary tale to be outlined the significant harm that can be done to possibility when inventors exaggerate the market dimension for their invention. You don't intend to be the one that with confidence declares: "Everyone is mosting likely to require to get this invention." No one ever attains 100% market share, and if that is what you expect you will be let down. If you are serious about establishing the real size of the market you will certainly investigate openly readily available info and dig through the data using practical assertions. According to U.S. Census information, in 2016 40.6 million individuals were living in poverty in the United States. The poverty line for a person was $12,228, while the poverty line for a household of 4 was $24,563. So precisely the amount of individuals can manage to purchase your invention? And then think about how many people could need the invention. Also check out https://theavtimes.com/2020/07/01/amazing-ways-inventhelp-can-assist-you-as-an-inventor/

The last 10 years of pixel art
Retronator the blog is exactly 10 years old right now (+ an hour or so more since I can’t seem to stop editing this post)!
I want to take this opportunity to look back at the teenage years of the 21st century and reflect on how the pixel art scene has grown over the years. I only promise a personal perspective, pieced together from my faulty memory and a bit more reliable archive of 1,700 posts on this blog.
2010
Social media sites emerged already in the late 2000s (Facebook launched in 2004, Twitter in 2006, Tumblr in 2007), but it took quite some time before they caught on, especially outside the US. I joined Tumblr in July 2010 and there were relatively few pixel artists active on the site. @jinndevil and @unomoralez go the farthest of those that I followed. The first post I reblogged was a Back to the Future piece from @megapont (via some blogpost share, since Megapont duo didn't join till 2013).
What was huge on the network however was sharing retro-gaming artworks by blogs like @it8bit and @gameandgraphics. This included many pixel art pieces and it helped grow a community of fans that adored both old games and pixels.
2011
I'd put 2011 down as the start of the hi-bit era of pixel art games, championed by the release of the iconic adventure game Sword & Sworcery. Pixel purism of the initial pixel art movement was left behind by mixing pixels with high-res special effects like soft shadows and vignetting. Also, spaghetti legs started their fad period.

Artists such as @probertson, @drewpixel, and @merrigo started their days on Tumblr, gathering huge audiences over the years. Meanwhile, Retronator grew to a whooping 100 followers by the end of the year.
2012
Tumblr's fan spirits were going stronger and stronger, to which I threw my own logs on the fire by releasing Tribute, my biggest and most popular piece of fan art I created so far.
The highly anticipated FEZ got released (to critical acclaim and other more controversial consequences), further bringing pixel art in front of the mainstream gaming audience.

From newly-followed artists, @johanvinet was damn inspiring with his smooth animations. Anything GIF did immensely good on the Tumblr dashboard.
2013
This was THE year for Tumblr. So many new artists joined, it was hard to keep track. Anyone from established names like Mojang's art director @jnkboy and @konjakonjak of Noitu Love 2 fame (later Iconoclasts) to pixel art beginners such as @waneella, now one of the most well-known illustrators in the scene.
The push for modern art direction with pixel art games wasn't stopping either. Not that amazing, more traditionally styled titles (with fresh color palettes) weren't present, as Chasm's debut on Kickstarter showed, but it was Hyper Light Drifter that really stole everyone's heart (machine) on the same crowdfunding platform. Gradients and smooth dynamic shading became unapologetically part of the pixel art (gaming) vocabulary from then on.

When Papers, Please got released at the end of the year to universal appraisal, a new example was set for showing that pixel visuals don't necessarily need to be the most polished, technically-impressive pieces of artistic expression, they can also be simple—the majority of detail-filling can be offloaded to the player's imagination.
2014
Pixel purist ideology was a highly debated topic. Dan Fessler, the background artist on Chasm, did a strong push against the tighter set of constraints which said you should only use 'clean' tools such as the pencil and color fill to complete your artworks. Dan instead only cared about clean results, pioneering in the process the technique of HD Index Painting that used the depths of Photoshop layer magic to get otherwise identical results. And there were plenty of others right around the corner that wouldn't even care about keeping the results married to traditional pixel art ideals.
Still, the majority of pixel art at this point was very orthodox. I started the Artist Feature series that showcased my favorite artists and none of them did anything controversial (nor they needed to). The biggest break from the old days was mainly highly increased color counts that allowed for subtle transitions without dithering, and free color picking without creating predefined color palettes. Octavi Navarro started his highly iconic @pixelshuh scenes, and the completely unknown @8pxl started her journey towards experimentation with pink sky gradients.

Even more importantly, Pixel Dailies were born on Twitter, following Ben Porter's 365 days of doing pixel art daily.
2015
I called 2015 The Year of Pixel Dailies in the end-of-the-year article in my newly started Retronator Magazine. The Twitter community really exploded this year, bringing in many new artists to the medium, with Pixel Dailies serving as a platform to raise visibility to everyone, old and new. I found out about @weilarddrake and @orange-magik this way, Slynyrd, @iceztiqarts, @igorsandman … Other freshly-discovered people on tumblr were @kirokazepixel (one of the most prolific artists on the scene), @faxdoc (his learning journey was inspiring enough for its own article), and Talecrafter with @deathtrashgame (starting a whole new style of aliased, low-res painting without caring about individual pixels).
The discussion whether pixel art could survive past its nostalgic roots was still in the air, stirred by opinions such as A Pixel Artist Renounces Pixel Art. History is proving them wrong however, with pixel art stronger than ever in 2020. It's not a visual language people born after the 80s couldn't understand.
New-school voxel art pieces started trending with the advent of Magicavoxel, pioneering the development of pixel art's sibling in 3D. The first pixel art convention Pixel Art Park was held in Tokyo. And (important for me personally), I came up with Pixel Art Academy, an adventure game that would take my ambitions in pixel art education into the future.
2016
After 9 years in development, Owlboy released! Also Hyper Light Drifter! And Stardew Valley! And Kingdom! Pixel art games were not dying, they were on the rise.
Edge (the popular British video game magazine) published a special 200+ page issue called Art of the Pixel. It featured contemporary artists outside the gaming context, championing the aesthetic's transition from its video game roots into its own art form.
Pedro Medeiros of @studiominiboss started his famous series of GIF tutorials, subsequently encouraging many others to share their knowledge in the popular square format. Tumblr still saw new artists joining the platform, such as @motocross-arts and @apolism (two thirds of the Japanese trio The Ultimate Pixel Crew), while others like @6vcr started their first pixel explorations that year. @brunopixels, an old-schooler on the platform like me, sparked the Octobit movement, a pixel art alternative to Inktober.
2017
Further new names on Tumblr included @guttykreum (outdoorsy perspective pieces) and @scrixels (one of the most consistent daily posters with over 1,000 artworks by now).
The annual Shibuya Pixel Art Contest joined Pixel Art Park at promoting the art form in Tokyo, Japan (and worldwide really). Lospec became the new go-to resource site for pixel art, picking up the mantle from PixelJoint and Pixelation that—while still active—stagnated technologically and feature-wise.
More than anything, pixel art games were everywhere. Maybe it only seemed to me this way since I was able to go to the Game Developer's Conference as press and had the chance to interview many many people in the scene, leading to over half a year of daily content on this blog. Indie games felt stronger than ever with so many of us full-on realizing our dreams of creating our own games professionally. The one that left the biggest splash on the scenes was no doubt The Last Night, announced front and center in-between AAA titles during Microsoft's E3 conference. The brothers Soret pushed the art direction even beyond the hi-bit era moniker, fusing 3D, shaders, and modern cinematography with pixels in an iconic combination that, like Sword & Sworcery's spaghetti legs, was so atmospheric that it couldn't be resisted by future imitators.

2018
Another game that pushed technological boundaries was Pathway, finally stepping into full light in 2018 and releasing one year later. I still think it has the most advanced pixel art graphics engine to date, using voxels and other tricks under the hood to deliver a completely dynamically lit environment while retaining the pixel-perfect 3/4 view aesthetic. Pixel art games were firmly part of mainstream gaming by now, with Celeste winning many awards alongisde pixelish Return of the Obra Dinn, further cementing the presence of pixels as an ever-evolving medium capable of expressing very different art styles.
I decided to focus solely on developing Pixel Art Academy in 2018, putting this blog on relative hiatus with very sporadic updates towards the end of the year. But I never let it die. I thoroughly enjoy writing about the scene and my interest in the art form only grows with time.
2019–2020
Ironically, the closer the years are to the present, the less I remember what things stood out most. Maybe it's because my brain hasn't had the chance to automatically prune my memories yet from the overload of information that is the interwebs these days. Pixel art seems so out there, so much of my everyday life, encompassing me on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, DeviantArt … Even on TikTok you see kids zooming out of their freshly pixelized Minecraft photographs they call pixel art. The medium is alive, and more than ever.
As for the Retronator blog, from its zero followers exactly 10 years ago, it grew to 100 after a year and a half, 1000 the year after, 10k when it was 5 years old, and 30k just last month. Tumblr is still the platform where most of you follow my pixel art reports and I don't intend to stop anytime soon.
Here's to the next decade! Thank you all for reading. <3

Darcy Lear: What will you take back to the face-to-face language classroom post-pandemic?
Like so many educators who’ve moved first to emergency remote teaching then to something more like online teaching, I have been overwhelmed by the information coming at me. At first, I eagerly attended all the Zoom workshops I could to get over the learning curve. Then I settled into a holding pattern that fit within my comfort zone for the online venue. Now I try limit my time on Zoom to the hours I am teaching or otherwise engaging with students.
Once the clutter and confusion cleared a bit, I was able to start to look ahead toward a return to face-to-face teaching. And what I’ve realized is that emergency remote teaching reminds me of some of the most important basics of language education—things I want to take back to the in-person classroom as soon as that is possible.
Here are a few of the things I am doing now that I want to keep doing post-pandemic:
1. Keep it simple—technology edition
Just because you can doesn't mean you should. And just because a technology exists, doesn't mean you should incorporate it into your classes—especially during forced online teaching due to a pandemic.
I have necessarily added the online teaching platform used by my campus: Zoom. Otherwise, students and I are using the same tech we've always used—the campus online learning system and the publisher's online textbook and workbook materials. I know Flipgrid and Flippity and Padlet and Panopto and Quizlet and twelve different recording and transcribing options exist. I believe that some are great pedagogical tools and have true potential in the language classroom. But not now. There have been enough learning curves during the pandemic.
Takeaway Don't use bells and whistles gratuitously. Identify your problem first, then solve it using technology if and only if it meets your needs.
2. Keep it simple—curriculum edition
Simplify, simplify, simplify. Are high-stakes tests feasible in the new venue? Do I really need 8-10 course components? Are my own pedagogical materials consistent across different documents and platforms?
The first two questions were a pleasure to address when we were first forced online in spring 2020: high-stakes chapter tests and the final exam were eliminated and replaced by low-stakes daily online quizzes (this is stuff we've known is better for a long, long time). These were 5-10 item assessments closely tied to content covered in that day's class. I told students, "If you can't complete those quizzes without resources, that's a red flag for you. Did you miss class and so it makes sense that it was hard? Do you need to brush up on a grammar point? Do you need to meet with me outside of online class? Did you forget to do the online homework (from which some quiz items are copied and pasted)?" This is what assessment is for—to measure student progress and see if they are ready to move on.
In the meantime, students’ course-long blogs and research projects formed the kind of project-based portfolio assessment we also have known for a long, long time is a better way to assess student learning than a lot of our old-school achievement tests (the kinds of tests people are fretting over how to administer securely online while ‘monitoring cheating’).
I folded some course components, such as recorded TalkAbroad conversations, into students’ portfolio projects so that students reported on them within the regular blog posts they were doing instead of in separate assignments.
By the time the spring 2020 course started, there were three major course components: textbook content, an online blog, and a research project. There were a total of 5 grading categories: daily quizzes, daily blog posts, in-class mini-presentations, a course-long research project, and a final presentation of the research project.
A single thread ran through the entire course so that the work to prepare for class led smoothly into the synchronous class period, which was followed by homework and assessments that reviewed all the content before repeating the cycle. Even though this is how it’s supposed to always work, it felt more focused and streamlined than any face-to-face course I've taught in recent memory.
In cleaning up my pedagogical materials, I developed a kind of check list: Do I even need to keep this content? Is there a way to fold this material into something else (portfolio assessments, online quizzes)? Do I use the names I have for assignments consistently? Do they make sense? Why were assignments described as "personal readings" in course documents and grade book columns years after they'd become "blog entries" in practice? Ditto for "documents 1-5" that were really "research project" components. Getting ready to engage in emergency remote teaching forced me to revisit a lot of content that worked inside my own head but didn't make a lot of sense to anyone else, something I know is an issue when designing pedagogical materials, writing instructions, writing academic articles—you name it!
Takeaway Can I simplify logistics for students? Can the various bits and pieces be streamlined so it makes more sense to students and flows better for all of us?
3. Keep it simple—classroom edition
As the teacher, do most of your work outside of class. With emergency remote teaching, most of my time was dedicated to planning before class, then grading and meeting with students after. In the online class sessions, I mostly just set up activities for students then hang out and listen to them interact. Occasionally, I interrupt to correct or explain, but mostly I wait for students to self-correct or reach out to me for clarification. I’ve noticed a lot more self-correction when I gave students the time and space to do it—well, Zoom did that for me.
This experience has reminded me of the kind of planning and preparing required of a novice teacher. I set up my lesson plan, re-visit it after a day or so, then run through it before class starts to make sure I have everything ready to go on my laptop:
Is the ebook opened to the first page I'll reference?
Do students have the link to the Google doc I'll ask them to use?
Do I have the PDF opened and ready to click on?
Is the PowerPoint presentation launched?
Do I know when I'm going to use breakout rooms and how many I will need?
At the beginning of each class, I share my screen to show students the lesson plan and run through the major topics as well as assignments that are due soon. It begs the question: why haven’t I been sharing my lesson plans with students all along?
Getting everything set up seems to take more time and energy than the Zoom session itself, but in the Zoom session I also shed the novice teacher and settle into the role of experienced teacher.
As soon as a Zoom class ends, I go back into planning mode—I post the day's lesson plan and homework online for students to reference, then I prepare the first draft of the next session's lesson plan. Before I polish the next plan, I spend a lot of time grading—reading/watching students' work, making individual comments on it, and checking their progress with online activities and assessments. In the process, I make sure the homework and quizzes align well with the class sessions (something I haven't dedicated enough time to in face-to-face teaching over the past decade or so).
Takeaway Be transparent with students. Make most of your work happen in the prep and follow-up so class time can focus on smooth student activities.
4. Let students learn by doing: Be the guide on the side, not the sage on the stage
Zoom is a horrible venue for "teacher at the front of class soliciting responses from individual students"—but so is a classroom if your goal is for students to build communicative competence in the language. But in classrooms it's very easy to fall into old-school patterns of the teacher doing too much of the talking. Online teaching—where everyone is disembodied and there are awkward pauses combined with people talking over each other—forces me to abandon any remnants of the Atlas complex. If I'm talking on Zoom it's very obvious I'm delivering a lecture or a teacher presentation.
I do talk to the whole group at the beginning and end of each Zoom session, with some teacher-like explanations peppered throughout the entire course. But most of the time spent on Zoom has been students in breakout rooms interacting with each other in Spanish—sometimes discussing textbook content in groups, sometimes preparing brief presentations to give to the whole class, sometimes with student discussion leaders who are formally assessed on their performance. I pop in but try to leave myself on mute.
Takeaway Find a way to put myself "on mute."
5. Be flexible and go easy on yourself and others
Right now we’re in a pandemic, but in "normal times" there are always some individuals who are navigating crises. We don't need to know the details, but we can make interactions with us easier instead of harder—extend deadlines, take late work, allow students to make up tests, and be understanding when they have to miss class.
Takeaway Nobody needs a punitive work or learning environment—ever. Be flexible. Go easy on yourself and others.

Addressing The Claims Against Us
Hello, this is Skybrite Studios with our official statement.
It has recently come to our attention that a former member of ours has been spreading claims that we stole his character design. Many of you might not have heard of this, considering the situation has started only a few days ago. But we felt it necessary to explain ourselves.
For those of you who have seen the posts of Bastion’s concept or sprite, you’ve probably also seen the special thanks we’ve included post script, crediting the originator of his character. We’ve always acknowledged Alex for his role in Bastion’s creation, and we’ve made no secret of it.
That was until recently, when the events leading to the release of this statement resulted in his wish to have all his work and credit struck from our project, and for us to remove any and all association he had in relation to our studio. In compliance with his request, we’ve since taken down any mention of his name.
As many of you have guessed from the content of his claims, our initial parting of ways was less than amiable. Circumstances being as they were, we weren’t certain we’d end up hearing from him again. Our last contact with him was on November 22, 2019, and there was a long period of silence between his first departure and his messages sent a few days ago.
For various reasons that we will get into shortly, Alex was let go from our team. Unfortunately, not long before the fact, his father had been diagnosed with cancer; and a recent exchange between him and our original project lead (dated June 11, 2020) has made us aware of the fact that he believes this was the reason for his termination. The screenshots enclosed below will prove that this was not the case.
*Blue refers to Alex, black is the original leader, and red is an old member who is still with us. Out of respect for the privacy and protection of personal information regarding the parties involved, certain things not pertaining to this argument have been blanked out. We apologize for the lack of quality in some of the screenshots as Tumblr photo qualities aren’t the best.
Albeit shared in private, messages between the other staff members (dating as far back as June 4, 2019) were already beginning to show signs of concern over his behavior:

This eventually led to the decision to let Alex go. Note that this decision was made on August 24, 2019 - months before his father’s diagnosis:

Due to personal reasons, the original leader took a step back from our project and she never stayed long enough to follow through.
This brings us to November 22, 2019, when she handed the project over to our current project lead, Sarah:
Following this, she went to our other veteran member to let her know that the project lead had changed for an indefinite amount of time and that her continued presence on the team would be appreciated - something she accepted and agreed to. This other member was then consulted over Alex’s behaviour and what was to be done:

After this conversation, Alex was informed in private about the decision to let him go. She told him that he would be credited for whatever ideas and characters he came up with that we intended to keep. Although he didn’t object at this point, the fault lies with us for not confirming this with him before continuing to use said ideas and characters; an oversight that we own and take responsibility for. Sarah also apologizes on not having been more empathetic towards his personal situation while letting him go. Having the project handed to her so suddenly as well as trying to figure out where to go from there was overwhelming and it ended up not being done at the best time. This is not excusing her, however, and she is aware of her faults.

After he was let go, he proceeded to mass delete the messages he’d left in the group chat with neither notice nor permission. It wasn’t until Sarah noticed and informed the original project lead that he was kicked from the server and stopped.

Although far from amiable, we’d assumed that our parting of ways marked the end of this episode. We never reached out to him and he never made contact with us. We never chatted directly again since his departure. But as fellow members of a relatively small community we still ran in the same circles; which was how we came to learn that he was developing a game of his own. The workload of a game developer (especially one who is working alone) is quite heavy, so we assumed this was another reason why he never spoke to us; and out of respect for his work ethic and maintaining the status quo, we kept to ourselves. For months, neither he nor us messaged, and it seemed we were each content to let the other exist quietly within the same space.
That was until June 12, 2020, when the original project lead suddenly messaged Sarah, informing her that Alex had messaged her, threatening legal action over ‘stealing’ his character. A message that appeared in Sarah’s inbox shortly confirmed her statement.
As the current project lead and one of the members of the original team Alex was a part of, Alex chose Sarah to reach out to with this message. This was her response and part of their subsequent exchange:
Although we had plans to pay him from the beginning, being that our tenuous relationship was what it was and the fact that this game was still in early development (in addition to the chance that this game may not turn a profit) we didn’t want to rock the boat by contacting him and distracting him from his own development work before we had his paycheck in hand. Another oversight on our part, and we should have told him earlier.
After digging and coming back with receipts for all the work he had done, this was what we came back with:
The concept art of Bastion
1,000 words worth of script within the prologue
Miscellaneous ideas that he’d brainstormed with the rest of our staff.
We consulted each of our staff for their regular rates to come up with an appropriate amount. Our concept artist charges $10 per concept. We offered him $20. We had no dedicated brainstormers on our team at the time, so ideas were a little harder to put a price on. But we decided on an initial offer of $5 for all the ideas he’d come up with (that we intended to keep), intending to go into negotiations with an open mind regarding pricing on this front. Fortunately we didn’t have the same problem with calculating what he was owed for his writing, which, according to various sources, showed that the industry standard was about $0.02 a word. To help us with calculating the price of his written work, we had Sarah who co-wrote the prologue with him highlight everything he’d written as well as all the parts that she wasn’t sure who’d written. The total word count of the high-lighted portions came down to just over 1,000 words. This, we rounded up to 1,100 to account for anything we might have missed. Using our rate of $0.02 a word, all written services rendered came down to $22 and gave us an overall total of $47 for all the work that he’d done.
In response, he requested $50 and 10% of any and all future sales. While we didn’t mind giving him the $50, 10% of all earnings was a lot to ask relative to how little was contributed, let alone used.
He claimed to be one of the founding members of a project conceived between the original project lead and her friend. He also claimed to have developed ‘most of the characters’. For the most part, during the brain-storming process, exactly who came up with what can be easy to lose track of, but even when digging through the entire chat history of our original discord server, we could not find evidence that he had any involvement with anything beyond fleshing out Bastion - though it should be noted that most of what he came up with, we ultimately decided against using. In addition, he has made similar claims with the plot, lore, and the prologue.
As mentioned earlier, we acknowledge his part in writing the 1,000 words he contributed to the prologue he co-wrote with Sarah. Having said that, the word count of the completed prologue prior to editing was almost 11,000, expanding quite a bit from his own contributions.
The ‘advertisement’ he claimed to have done for our game consisted of spreading our project through word-of-mouth via a few posts to discord servers, speaking with real-life friends and the premature reveal of Bastion’s character for an Art Fight.
Alex also made claims to have ran the Tumblr, our main form of advertisement. While he did have access to our original Tumblr, Sarah was the one to originally create it. Before his departure only two to three posts had been made on the platform.
He claims to have gathered resources. However, those resources were just reference pictures that we, as mentioned previously, did not use. He also said that he directed Sarah when he was in no position/had no authority to do so.
Sarah explained this to him, admittedly a bit heated throughout, to which he then told her to forget the payment and remove everything he did; else he would file a DMCA report:
Most of what he claimed to have done, he did not do. He did not create the concept art for any of the characters except Bastion. Our concept artist, Cate, did. He claims that he came up with the concept of a tenuous relationship between the human and demon races when it’s been a common trope in media for years: Humans vs. Demons. He created a font, but it was not requested nor have there been any plans to use it. He also claimed to have come up with the idea to put in more LGBTQ+ options in the dating sim - something which has been done many times in VNs like these, not to mention it was always the original leaders’ intention to include these options. In addition, Sarah was actually the one to bring up “evening out” the ratio. Here is a closer look at the screenshot she sent him:
Sarah even explained to him that if he were to demand a ‘tithe’, he would also be accountable for a tenth of the losses should the game fail to turn a profit. He then told her, again, to delete all of his work, along with anything that would associate us with him:
We agreed and deleted all of his written work. However, she told him Bastion did not need to and would not be deleted. Cate had changed his concept, and we’d fleshed Bastion out very differently to how Alex had imagined him. His DMCA report would be considered invalid for various reasons, including that he asked us to remove his written work- the only work of his that we'd been using prior to its removal per his request:
For reference to show how he’s changed, here is (in up-to-down order) his final concept of Bastion, our final concept for him, and our official sprite:

*More context and information regarding these concepts further down
Following this, he did not respond. Instead, he went back to our original project lead to find anything that could prove he legally owns Bastion due to Sarah having declined to give him the 10% of all future sales he’d asked for:
*The time is different because the original leader and Sarah live in different timezones.
In response to this, he has been claiming that we stole from him despite crediting him and intending to pay him. This is defamation. Moreover, it had been discovered that Bastion's original concept was not even created by him.
After discussing things with our original leader, she told us that she was actually the one who drew the original concept of Bastion. In fact, the idea of having a Paladin LI that Alex claimed was also thought up by her and her friend. Alex’s only contributions to the character were coming up with his name, making him half-human half-elf, and black - all traits that are public domain/fair use and can not be copyrighted.
Here are all the screenshots in chronological order:
These were some of the first messages sent after Alex joined. As you can see in the picture, he asked what ideas the original leaders had. A paladin LI was already in the works before he joined.
This was the original project lead’s first concept of a paladin LI.
This was Alex’s rendition, sent after the original leader’s. Unfortunately, no matter how long we waited, the second photo would not load. But it was similar to his concept art above.
*Note that the hairstyle is different
He then sent this link. Within this document, there was a reference photo as well as a drawing of his.
This was his reference photo:
This was his drawing:
However, it appears to have been traced. Below are photos of both images layered on top of one another-- one with the drawing on top and one with the reference on top:
Shortly afterwards, the original project lead sent in her drawings for Bastion:
This was the first time this hairstyle had been drawn on Bastion. This was also what Alex stuck with for his final concept. The design he was trying to claim was actually created by our original project lead. If you compare our art side-by-side, you can see that our official sprite takes more inspiration from our original leader’s than it does Alex’s.
We said at the beginning that we have not stolen anything, and we stand by that.
Everything we’re using is either public domain, a popular cliche, or interpretations which fall under fair use. We offered to credit and pay Alex and he ended up declining. We hope this helps with answering most of your questions. If anyone has anything they would like to ask or see addressed, our inbox is always open.
And please, to anyone who knows of this situation personally as well as know who is involved, don’t send any negativity towards any of them.

TerraMythos' 2020 Reading Challenge - Book 21 of 26

Title: Blood for Blood (Wolf by Wolf #2) (2016)
Author: Ryan Graudin
Genre/Tags: Alternate History, Historical Fiction, Dystopian, Science Fiction, Young Adult, Third Person, Female Protagonist, Duology
Rating: 7/10
Date Began: 7/20/2020
Date Finished: 7/27/2020
Yael, a death camp survivor with the ability to skinshift, has fulfilled her mission -- impersonate Axis Tour contender Adele Wolfe and assassinate Hitler on live TV. But something has gone terribly wrong, and Yael is on the run from the SS. She finds herself in an uneasy alliance with Luka Lowe and Felix Wolfe, the two people she tricked the most by pretending to be Adele. Now, as war and rebellion escalate worldwide against the Reich, the three have to find a way back to Germania and the heart of the resistance.
“Mark my words, Herr Wolfe.” Baasch’s voice swelled over the Führer’s speech. He watched the television, a half smile breaking his face. “There will be blood. There will be more than enough. The world is about to drown in it.”
Major spoilers for Wolf by Wolf and minor spoilers for Blood for Blood under the cut.
I have mixed feelings about this book, and while there's a lot of specific reasons I will go into, I think it can be summed up in one statement: Blood for Blood is a completely different animal than Wolf by Wolf (pun intended). Logically, yes, no two books in a series will be or should be the same, but this duology takes it to the next level. Blood for Blood's style, tone, and pacing often feel like it's from a totally different series. Whether that's a good or a bad thing varies throughout the novel, but I enjoyed Wolf by Wolf more. The first and most obvious difference between the two is structure. Wolf by Wolf has a very concise and deliberate story, focusing on Yael. Sections of the plot are organized by legs of the Axis Tour race. Flashbacks are also sprinkled throughout to give the reader a sense of Yael's backstory and motivations-- but they're executed in a way that feels organic. The slick format is one of the best parts of Wolf by Wolf, and unfortunately is pretty much absent in Blood for Blood. Instead, Blood for Blood features a split perspective between Yael and two of the leads from the first book, Felix and Luka. In some ways I really like this change, as it allows the latter two to become much more interesting and fleshed out characters. On the other hand, it also takes away from the focus inherent in the first book, and as a result the narrative feels disorganized. Without the Axis Tour, the series loses a lot of the glue keeping things together. It’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s difficult not to compare it to the previous entry. Flashbacks still exist, albeit changed. Each character periodically gets a perspective flashback that takes place on the same day in history. From a characterization perspective, it's an interesting way to show how their histories and motivations compare and contrast. However, in practice these scenes don't appear with any consistency, so when they show up it feels random rather than deliberate. I wish this technique had been presented in a more straightforward manner, possibly with more scenes than the handful we actually get.
The change I like the most is the tonal shift. Blood for Blood is darker than Wolf by Wolf, being much more explicit about the horrors of war and Nazi atrocities, torture, and war crimes. Wolf by Wolf wasn't lighthearted by any means, but the kid gloves come off completely with this one. I think it's an important change to highlight just how insidious and evil Nazism is, especially in an age with increasing pro-Nazi and far right sentiment. I also LOVE that Luka and Felix both have to come to terms with the evils of the regime and change as a result. The part where they both realize the atrocities of the death camps and medical experiments is probably one of my favorite parts in the book; their sheer horror and visceral disgust is satisfying and redemptive. This darker tone really ramps up the stakes, and I think makes the book much more exciting and emotionally charged. For me the characterization is a mixed bag. Luka is much more likable in this entry. In Wolf by Wolf he’s a generic “jerk LI character with Hidden Depths”, but learning his backstory and motivations in Blood for Blood helps a lot. Maybe I’m a sap, but I actually like his relationship with Yael in this one, since it’s built on genuine admiration and respect rather than the antagonistic sniping of the previous book. There is less laser focus on Yael in Blood for Blood, but I think the continuation of her identity arc is well executed. When she finds the old photograph of herself? BRUH. I was skeptical about *SPOILER CHARACTER* showing up out of nowhere, but ultimately I like her role in the story, and there’s subtle foreshadowing in Wolf by Wolf, making it one of the few twists in this series I didn’t see coming.
Unfortunately I feel the opposite about Felix. To be clear, I have no problem with a main character regressing and making poor choices like Felix does, and I think it can be interesting if done right. But Felix’s arc is based around a whole lot of misunderstandings, and even when the misunderstandings get resolved, he just... stubbornly keeps being a selfish idiot. There’s very little nuance or development on this front until the very end. While objectively his choices are understandable with context, it doesn’t make them any less grating to read about. Ultimately, he pays for his decisions big time and THAT is satisfying, but I don’t know if it makes up for gritting my teeth for a good third of the novel.
There’s also some details that just make me scratch my head. Like, what happened to the skinshifting? It’s not totally absent in this story, but it serves very little role in the first half. The inciting premise of this book is that there’s more skinshifters than just Yael, and the Nazis are using them to imitate Hitler and protect him from assassination attempts. But that thread doesn’t really pay off until the climax? Yael and *SPOILER CHARACTER* doing it feels like an afterthought, with the exception of one scene. I just feel like there’s so much one can do re: subterfuge and sabotage when one’s enemies can literally change faces and imitate people. There is a sabotage subplot... but it’s with Felix, who can’t skinshift! I don’t know, it just feels like a huge missed opportunity. Also, Japan is a pretty major Thing in the first book and it’s barely relevant in Blood for Blood. It feels like Graudin genuinely forgot about it other than a token mention at the end.
If I'm being honest, this book was hovering right at a 6/10, but I think the ending bumps it up to a 7. It’s very intense with excellent tension and pacing. Predictable, sure-- it’s pretty easy to pin down (1) who dies and (2) the final twist at the end-- but I don’t mind some predictability if it’s well executed. The easiest way to my heart is a real emotional gutpunch, and boy the ending delivers.
It’s hard for me to recommend this book unless you liked Wolf by Wolf and really want to see what happens to the characters. It’s much different from the previous volume, for better and worse. Blood for Blood is good, but it wasn’t what I expected in a followup and suffers in its inherent comparison to Wolf by Wolf.

[TRANS] YoonA – L’Officiel Spring/Summer 2020 YK Edition Interview

You tried both feminine and masculine styles for today’s photoshoot. Which style do you like more? Especially when you wore a wig, I felt that it fits the YoonA I know. Is it? While discussing the pictorial concept, I was also asked if I will be okay to wear a wig. I thought it is a great idea, so I accepted the suggestion readily. Its feel fun trying something for the first time. And when I really tried it, I saw ‘a face that I don’t even know myself’ so I felt that the decision to go ahead is right. I also tried two different styles of outfits, as I have always been wearing more feminine outfits, I felt that masculine concept is more charming. But when I wore feminine outfits, I will have thoughts like ‘ah, as expected I look better in lovely outfits.’ Thus, I feel that both concepts are good, I have always been doing similar concepts so I would like to try different concepts in the future.
It has been 13 years since you debut. Is there any split moment where you feel like you have grown up as compared to before? Like how I do not find it tiring filming like this the whole day? As time passes, more ‘free time’ came out (laughs) and I naturally become more relaxed. Looking back to my debut days where I have many things that I don’t know about, everything feels dim and tough. But right now, I have accumulated a lot of experiences so I know what fits me more and I can do even better. Just like shooting for a photoshoot like now, I also actively voice out many opinions, seeing how I am showing more initiatives, it seems that I have mature a lot too.
How is YoonA like as a child? Did you already show ‘a born celebrity’ personality back then where you were not afraid to be in front of many people? I remembered that I like talent shows, I will not hesitate to participate whenever I get the chance. I do not feel shy standing in front of many people. But I have always been the careful type so thinking back I am not sure how I managed to do that, I am amazed too. Right now, because of the nature of my job I met a lot of people, so my personality has changed, and I am able to chat comfortably with people who I meet for the first time. To me, it is a huge change.
So, you went for the audition like this? The audition video of you singing with your kiddy face has been a hot topic for a long time. My situation is like the famous scenario of ‘accompanying friend to go for audition but I end up being the only one getting in’. (Laughs) My friend said to go audition together and I agreed thinking that ‘even I didn’t get in, it will still be a good experience’. In the end my friend did not get in, but I got in. And from then I became a trainee for 5 years and all the way until my debut, I have not missed a single day of practice. Looking back like this I guess this is indeed something I really enjoyed doing.
You debut as a singer and actress at about the same time. Up til now which of your works are the most memorable ones for you? I thought of the project that allows many people to come to know me and also my first leading role, ‘You Are My Destiny’. Although people in their 10s and 20s might have know me while promoting as a SNSD member but people who are of the higher age groups would not know me then. Through this project, I receive love from all the different age groups. My first movie ‘Confidential Assignment’ and my first leading movie ‘EXIT’ are all precious works too.
Your first leading movie ‘EXIT’ is one of the biggest hits of the year. The movie indeed received more love than what was initially expected. If I had a rich experience of filming movies, I would have known then that more than 9 million moviegoers is an alarming figure, but I didn’t realize it at the initial stage. As I see more and more moviegoers, I gradually became very excited. I began to wonder if I will be able to see a number (of moviegoers) like this again in the future. Because it is a disaster action movie, I have been running throughout and there are many actions scenes that require me to use body acting, but the result turns out well, so I felt it is even more meaningful. While experiencing a disaster indirectly (through acting in a disaster action movie), I learned a lot on how to deal with situations should they happen in reality, because disasters are situations that anyone may and can experience.
From my personal point of view, I feel that the concept and the role in the drama series ‘The K2’ are very memorable. Before that, there were a lot of candy-like roles that ‘do not cry no matter how lonely and sad’, but the gazes of Go Anna played by YoonA are completely different from before. In ‘The K2’, Anna is a very complex role that has been living a secret life of solitude, it was a new challenge for me. The location where we filmed the overseas scenes is Barcelona. When I do not have any shooting schedules, I strolled around the city and created really good memories there.
It is not easy to break an existing image. I realized that wanting to break the image or stereotype that people have of me is not something that is achievable just by with words. I used to be very mindful of what the public thinks. I will foremost consider what the public’s reaction will be if I act in a role like this. ‘The K2’ is the first project that I decided to do without considering factors like that. After that, I opened my mind a lot on showing more different sides of me as an actress.
Is there any roles you would like to challenge in the future? I wanted to try a character that is different from what I have shown so far. People only see a fragment of me, but I have many different sides of myself that only I know about. However, it is really hard to meet the right character at the right time, I guess all actors and actresses out there share the same feeling too.
Can you tell us more of the scheduled work you have for this year? Fortunately, the work I liked has appeared, but I think its better to share more of the details after everything becomes more certain. After all, there are always all sort of changes when It comes to work related matters.
Is there any plans as a musician? The special album ‘A Walk To Remember’ that you released last year was a surprise thankful gift to fans. I do not have any plans right now but the desire to sing is always there. Of course, I will continue doing music to express my gratefulness to fans.
The genres featured in the special album are calm music such as folk and acoustic ballads which are the opposite of SNSD’s usual upbeat and fast dance tracks. Was your personal taste of music originally that way? I listen to all types of music, regardless of its genre. I basically will browse songs that are on music charts, be it dance track or a classical song. My favourite genres change often too. Perhaps it is because I listen to a lot of songs of such genres during the preparation of the special album, so I was influenced (Laughs). My music playlist is mainly based on the weather or mood of that day. It rained yesterday so I was suddenly reminded by a song in the movie ‘About Time’ called ‘II Mondo’ so I looked it up and listen to it. I think it is because it is a background music of the famous wedding scene in the movie where it suddenly rained, and everyone was seeking shelter. Recently I also like to listen to old pop songs. Not long ago while driving, Roy Orbison’s ‘In Dreams’ was played in the radio, and it was so good. Matching the weather, atmosphere of that day, everything seems to fit perfectly together.
Speaking of old pop songs, I recalled that you posted photos taken with a film camera on your Instagram, it seems to have similar vibes with your preference in music. 6 months ago, I went to Paris for vacation with the thought of taking photos with a film camera. Although it is a disposable camera, the exterior design of the camera is really pretty, and the results turn out unexpectedly good too, so I was really satisfied. These days you can check the photos as soon as you took it, but for film cameras you would not know how it turn out until the photos are developed. I really enjoy the time and anticipation I have while waiting for the photos to be developed. It is a fun experience.
When we talk about YoonA, it is hard not to think of SNSD. What does SNSD means to you? To me, they are always the most special and comfortable people. We spent our 10s and 20s together even closer than we do with our own families, so right now even just looking into each another eyes we will know what the other party is thinking. Even now we still keep in touch often with one another.
YoonA started donating since 2010, and you become a member of ‘Honor Society’ in 2015. What are your thoughts with regards to donations? When I was about 20 years old, I started donating through a relay donation program. From then on, I will participate in donations whenever I got the opportunity. Regardless of the amount, I think it is most important to want to share. My consistency with donation is also largely influenced by my parents. They often told me ‘how much you receive, how much you share, this way you will receive a bigger blessing’. It is not easy to continue donation consistently, but I will do my best to continue doing it.
How do you de-stress whenever you feel mentally exhausted? For example, through exercise? Although I do Pilates to unwind myself, but it seems just doing Pilates is not enough to relieve my stress (Laughs). I am also trying hard to find things to do at home so as not to have feeling of tiredness. Sometimes I bake cookies, shift the positions of my furniture or I go for a drive. Today I brought the cookies I made myself and shared them with the staffs. In the past, I relieved my stress by meeting and chatting with people around me, but now I am finding my own way to relieve stress. That’s because no matter how much fun I have when I met with my friends, there is always a sense of emptiness when I went home. I think that I can’t always depend on others, so I am trying hard to look for ways to manage my mood better.
What is the thing that is the most ‘YoonA-like’? Hmm, my personality is always changing bit by bit, so that are times that I don’t even understand myself. Aren’t everyone like this, there are many people that think I have a bright personality, although generally it is so but there are times where I am not. In a sense, I think the realest me is shown most through ‘Hyori’s Homestay 2’. The cameras were rolling for 24 hours, so it is unbelievable to say I didn’t have moments that I was relaxing. Through this reality show, I was surprised to know that there are many people who saw a complete different me.
How do you feel about getting older? I am not afraid of getting older, on the contrary, I am actually looking forward to how I will be like as I gradually get older. Occasionally, there will be interviews where I was asked how I think I will be 5 or 10 years down the road, these are things that I can’t be certain of since they are still far in the future. However, regarding next year when I can think and plan for, I can promise that ‘this time next year, I will be even better’.
It is this positive mindset that made YoonA who she is today. What are the happiest memories you have so far? There are too many. Like when SNSD went on concert tours, when SNSD received daesang, the time when my first leading movie opened in theatres, when I received a rookie award as an actress… now that I say it, it seems like the list can goes on and on. I have so many happy memories in my 20s, but perhaps after going through my 30s I can say I am the happiest in my 30s. My philosophy is that ‘compared to setting big goals, lets achieve the small goals right in front, enjoy today and have fun every moment’. I am thinking, if I spend today happily, won’t the ‘today’ of each day come together and eventually my whole life will become enjoyable.

NEW AI GOOGLE SEO RANKING RELEASED- CHECK HOW TO RANK NOW

After several months, Google has announced its latest AI update for search engines. This is going to change a lot of things in the SEO space.
Either you are ready for it or not it is going to alter SEO webpage ranking. The new ranking factor is necessary owing to the way searchers querying Google.
From the latest. This algorithm will now allow Google to show important web pages on search instead of the whole page.
That is, paragraphs or related queries will show up if they contain searchers key phrases on Google. Some of these updates are affected already.
Whereas; others will be carried out before the year ends. The technology behind this Artificial intelligence (AI) is called BERT-Deep learning technology. This is one of Google AI updates for search engine ranking.
WHAT IS THIS BERT?
As Google is becoming more and more conversational in its information delivery. It is making sure searchers' demands are very unique and given correctly. That is the reason it has developed this BERTH Technology.
BERT means Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. It is part of an Artificial intelligent learning algorithm which ensures a machine better understands users' query.
Artificial intelligence machine learning algorithm that works to deliver better search queries for Google search. As voice search is becoming a more valuable search feature now.
That is BERT is being featured in the latest Google AI update for search engine updates. What is the implication of that to businesses?
It means that organic ranking on Google means to create content that will be “hyper-relevant” to users intention and what users queries. The mean point is to create an article based on these four (4) searchers' intentions. Which are arranging alphabetically?
· Asking (informational)
· Do (transactional)
· Go (navigational)
· Research (commercial)
1.) BERT INTRODUCTION IN ALL SEARCH QUERY
This shift is needful to help searchers get targeted information instead of showing the whole web page. Though, that is not the whole update. More of these updates are going to be affected before the end of the year.
Some of these latest changes are BERT, which is already implemented. This is an AI technique of understanding Natural Language Processing (NLP). Looking at the growing rate of AI acceptance in the digital space.
Google have updated its search engine rules with BERTH to understand searchers intention and delivery exactly what is queried. And will affect only 10% of search.
But will focus more on long tail key phrases in English language at the moment.
According to Google; today we’re excited to share that BERT is now used in almost every query in English, helping you get higher quality results for your questions.”
2.) NEW AI SPELLING ALGORITHM FOR SEO
Google came up with a new spelling improvement algorithm with AI. This technology will now understand misspelled words in its proper way.
This is one of Google’s major breakthroughs in the last five years of research.
The main motive is to know exactly the intention behind misspelling words in English language. The rest languages may be adjusted in the feature.
3.) SEO PASSAGES INDEXING
After announcing the latest AI search engine updates, Google is going to start indexing passages for queries related to it.
That means, this time if a query is made that would show a passage, or subtopic not all the entire topic would show instead the very passage is expected to show on the query.
The point is passages are to be indexed on SERPs. And if it is valuable it is going to appear in the present of searchers. Though, this latest passage update will only affect 7% of Google SEO.
Let’s hear from what Google said; we’ve recently made a breakthrough in ranking and are now able to not just index web pages, but individual passages from the pages.
By better understanding the relevancy of specific passages, not just the overall page, we can find that needle-in-a-haystack information you’re looking for.
This technology will improve 7 percent of search queries across all languages as we roll it out globally.”
From all indications, it is going to affect only mobile search not desktop. This latest update is going to narrow the passage, not the entire page.
The point is, businesses that want to appear organically will have to optimize passages to meet long key phrases of Google search queries. If the answer is found between the passage of a web page.
ALSO READ: SEM IN NEW NORMAL
4.) GOOGLE SUBTOPIC RANKING
Again, the next update of Google AI's latest algorithm is subtitle optimization. This one centers mainly on broad base searches or general search queries. For example, if this key phrase “sport equipment ” it may mean many things in general to a lot of people. And a broad topic to deliver. Because we have indoor and outdoor sport equipment. It will be difficult to rank this kind of broad topic because it is not specific or narrowed.
Another example is a topic like “Phone” since this key phrase is kind of a broad topic it may confuse search engines on what to show; because we have Smartphones, telephones and all kinds of cell phones.
It’ll present a random result, since the intention is unknown. Too, it may mean several things to a lot of people. And if you think you can gain high traffic through it think twice; if it is going to walk.
However, the latest update allows webmasters who narrow or optimize subtopic to rank on Google search. Google has promised to implement this before the year runs out.
See how Google explained it; we’ve applied neural nets to understand subtopics around an interest, which help to deliver a greater diversity of content when you search for something broad.
As an example, if you search for “home exercise equipment. We can now understand relevant subtopics, such as budget equipment, premium picks, or small space ideas, and show a wider range of content on the search results page. We’ll start rolling this out by the end of the year”

5.) VIDEO BASE SEO LATEST UPDATE FROM GOOGLE
What does that mean, Google will now Optimize 10% of SEO to video content. It will use its AI powered algorithm to know different passages in a video. Give a tag to the video part, analyze and explain it vividly.
And would explain its content; rank targeted video parts within it to video searchers directly. Now Google will not show the full video for the query but the part that is asked by the user.
As a means of delivering mix content to search queries. In section by section in timely form.
Again, it is a huge breakthrough if you ask me; to the video production industry. Google as a major content delivery brand will like to present quality pieces of information be it videos to its users.
According to the Search Engine Journal;“this going to impact the SERPs and maybe video production and planning to make sure the videos are easily understood, section by section.”- SEJ
This is how Google explain it:”using a new AI-driven approach, we’re going to understand the deep semantics of a video and automatically
Identify key moments. This let us tag those moments in the video, so you can navigate like chapters in a book. We’ve started testing this
technology this year, and by the end of 2020 we expect that 10 percent of searches will use this new technology.”
6.) Statistical report ranking
By now you should know that Google search is not only for articles or videos but statistical data or reports from data mining industries. Data sellers or report about statistical information. What this means is; the latest Google update for search engines will now show statistics directly.
Not the former way, where a query will show the entire webpage. The motive is to allow searchers to get information quicker, better and faster.
Let’s see how Google said it:”Sometimes the best search is statistics. But often stats are buried in large datasets and not easily comprehensible or accessible online.
Since 2018, we’ve been working on the Data commons Project, an open knowledge database of statistical data now we’re making this information more accessible and useful through Google search.”
All these are done with the aid of AI powered algorithms embedded into Google search engine to bring massive advancement in search engine delivery query. Through deep learning technology SERPs will become increasingly tougher if SEO experts are not pretty flexible to the latest from the search engine giant.
CONCLUSION:
From the latest Google update for SEO, it will become harder to rank high on the front page from the old ranking algorithm. Because, the latest improvement on SEO will create more variety in search results. Which in turn will make organic ranking extremely difficult and tougher.

The Last of Us Part II - Review (PS4)
8/14/20 ***SPOILERS***

Developed by Naughty Dog, released June 19th, 2020
The Last of Us was a game I wasn’t originally a huge fan of when it came out in 2013. Despite it receiving astronomical praise by fans and critics, it took me a couple times completing the game before I fell in love with it. What truly made The Last of Us special was not necessarily its concept or gameplay, but its storytelling and characters. The depth of the interpersonal drama and raw emotion on screen was the true core of the game, with the stealth-action, zombies, and other aspects more like icing on the cake. The Last of Us ended up being one of my favorite games of all time strictly based on execution, even if the game as a whole still isn’t perfect.
The Last of Us Part II was my most highly anticipated game of 2020, and it feels strange to be on the other side of it finally. This game has been polarizing for fans, and as it turns out, I feel conflicted on the game as well. I finished it a month or so ago, but only now getting my thoughts written out. While some aspects are daring, jaw dropping, and gorgeous, other aspects detract from what is an unexpected story not quite living up to its potential. I respect this game more than I love it, and while I do think critics have been too kind in review scores, the exceptionally low user reviews have been far more incorrect. This is a solid, epic, deep, beautiful, emotional campaign which will deliver its money’s worth, but many contentious points will dictate how much you enjoy this blockbuster of a video game.

One of the aspects I like the most about this game is how similar the gameplay is to the original. Many people I suppose would want more change or innovation in the 7 years since The Last of Us, but personally I’ve always been a fan of sequels that retain what I like about a series. If it changes too much, it becomes too detached from what I enjoyed or got used to. Changes Part II makes are subtle, but natural for the genre and world. The player can duck and go prone in waist-high grass to conceal themselves, a dodge button has also been added, and a huge addition to combat and stealth is the addition of attack dogs who patrol with their owners. Dogs can pick up your scent until you distract it, adding to a lot of tension anytime enemy K9s are around. And yes, I found it difficult to shoot the first couple of dogs I encountered as they yelp out in pain when they get hurt or die.
Part II picks up I believe 5 years after the original. Ellie and Joel live in Jackson, the town they town the become a part of at the end of The Last of Us, and seem to be thriving in a community with food, power, and systems in place for relative safety from the outside world. The story is told in a much more chopped up chronology which I found to be detrimental to the pacing. The first game had a straightforward narrative and it worked very well, and this game has to dice up its story to make it seem more complex, but just comes off as pretentious. For example, by the end of the prologue (about a hour and a half) you play as three different characters. This leads into the strange structure of this game’s story, aside from having the linearity chopped up at times.

The most controversial moment of the game is the moment of Joel’s death and how it occurred. While this event was not unexpected for myself and others, the manner of which he died is what’s justifiably pissing people off. A brand new character is introduced named Abby (and one of the three characters we briefly play as shortly before) and without any background or indication of who she is, brutally tortures and executes Joel in front of Ellie’s eyes. It’s not difficult to see director Neil Druckmann cackling with satisfaction of his subversion of expectations. It’s simply toying with the emotions of fans, and he has to expect and stand by any criticism he’s gotten for how this scene went down. However, this moment does make more sense as the story unfolds, but its no less a heavy handed and manipulative move for the sake of auteur video game storytelling.
Ever since I witnessed the brutal death of one of my favorite video game characters of all time, my only though was “they better justify this.” It was never “this is horrible and irredeemable, and “Naughty Dog is off its rocker,” like many people seem to have reacted. It was gut wrenching, but I knew Naughty Dog has a pension for organic characters, and in the back of my mind I knew I had to give this game its fair shot, and see if and/or how Naughty Dog justified a scene liable to piss off virtually every single fan of the original game. This is a poor spot of the game, but the structure of the game itself is, for me, the biggest issue of Part II. In the end, I don’t mind Joel’s death as much seeing the context surrounding it, although it still should have been handled entirely differently.

Neil Druckmann proudly pulls a Metal Gear Solid 2 move, and entirely switches protagonists for a huge portion of the game (about 45%). Abby turns out to be the main character once the halfway point of the game hits. Following Joel’s death is about 9-11 hours playing as Ellie on her revenge quest to find Abby and kill her. The motivation is justified, being in the room with Ellie as she watched her father figure die in agony in front of her. Ellie’s portion of the campaign makes sense, Abby’s makes less. The structure of the story comes to a high point mid way through, where Abby and Ellie finally meet to clash. After all this build up, and around the same time of the game where the first game had its conclusion, everything halts and resets.
We are suddenly dropped into the Abby story, showing her side of things, and why she would want to kill Joel. I do think the story directly surrounding her motivation is well done, but the problem is, a large portion of Abby’s story has literally nothing to do with Joel or Ellie. We effectively see why Abby would want revenge on Joel, but then we have to tag along on a major side journey while Abby helps a trans kid and his sister escape the cult they grew up in. I get that it helps develop more empathy for Abby as a character, but Abby’s story should have been at least cut in half to keep the overall story more focused and flowing. Many times while deep into Abby’s story I honestly forgot what the point of what I was doing is, and was getting confused on which events had happened and which hadn’t.

Abby herself is a good character, and after all has been said and done, she is the third best character in this series so far. It’s a shame though that so much of her story is a direct waste of time, despite more of an excuse for more of the same great gameplay and set-piece moments. Empathy and perspective are the two big themes of this game. The best thing I can say about Part II is it convinced me of something I thought was near inconvincible: it made me like and root for Abby after the scene of Joel’s death. However, while the theme of the game is “all of your enemies have their own backstory,” Par II doesn’t teach us anything new whatsoever. Abby’s father was the surgeon Joel killed upon saving Ellie from the Fireflies at the climax of Part I. But Joel (and Ellie) killed a lot of random enemies in the first game, most of them players won’t even remember specifically.
The fact that we have an entire video game showing us the perspective of one single person who wants revenge on Joel is a story that doesn’t need to be told. Any NPC we killed in the first game had family or friends who would also want revenge on Joel as well. We don’t learn anything new. This whole series is just marauder against marauder. Joel has never been a good guy, and that’s never been a secret. Joel is shown as an anti-hero even before the conclusion of the first game. It’s partially what makes him such a cool character. We only rooted for Joel because we were seeing things from his perspective. If the first game was entirely about Abby and Joel was framed as the bad guy, the results would have been the same: Abby would be our point-of-view “hero” character, while Joel was clearly the villain. Part II is not the epiphany Neil Drukmann likely wanted his audience to experience.

As anyone can see, the graphics and performances of Part II are incredible. While the story and structure are nothing too special (because it ruins its great moments by long drawn out heavy handed moments), at least the game itself is engaging to play and is gorgeous to look at. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest myself, and the game mainly taking place in Seattle, I enjoyed being totally waterlogged throughout the entire experience. If the story isn’t depressing enough on its own, the weather will certainly get to you. The core characters themselves are portrayed extremely well via motion capture and voice acting as well. I’m wondering why Neil Druckmann didn’t just make a Netflix series beings he is clearly so focused on the character’s interpersonal relationships. This is especially true for Joel and Ellie once again. Side characters are well acted, but have less of an effect on the core story, which is a huge tragedy when so much effort was clearly put into bringing them to life.
There’s no doubt Naughty Dog accomplished their specific goal in making you as depressed as possible. To be honest, it reminded me of some of my favorite books about stories of conflicting emotions and ending on depressing notes. Even though Part II is far from perfect, it’s still a juggernaut of a single-player game with amazing graphics, acting, responsive gameplay. I like the ways it proved me wrong on stuff I thought was unchangeable, and for that, it has my deep respect. It may not be for everyone, not even fans of the first, but if you come at it with an honest open mind and let yourself drop your ego enough to take in this entire story, I think it’s a daring piece of media that might age very well in time.

Best Photography Tips for Beginners in 2020
I’ve been a photography hobbyist for more than 3 years. In this period, there were a lot of useful photography tips and tricks that I discovered through the internet or by experimentation. This guide consists of the photography tips that I have personally implemented and benefited from.
Some of the tips are related to the gadget (DSLR camera, lens, filter, etc.) while some are related to understanding yourself and discovering a unique style. All of these tips are equally beneficial for you to develop as a beginner photographer.
So, without any further due, let’s dive in the best photography tips for beginners.
1. Taking care of your camera and lens:

Along with understanding how to click better pictures, it is equally important to take good care of your camera and lenses. Protecting them from dust, damage, or other harm can improve their lives and maintain their ability to produce quality images. There are a few things that one can do in order to take good care of your equipment.
Every camera body and lenses will have a front and a back cap for protection. Make sure when you want to attach a lens, the camera sensor and the back portion of the lens is not exposed to the harsh sunlight. Sometimes, the camera sensor gets damaged due to overexposure to the harsh sunlight or dust. The same goes for lenses.
Buy a lens care kit that is inclusive of brushes, cloth, cleaning solution, and bulb blowers. Use them effectively at regular intervals to prevent your lenses from any damage. If you do not have a lens care kit or you do not want to do it yourself, then give it to a camera repair shop near your location.
Avoid storing your camera and lens in a damp, moist atmosphere. Rather keep them in a hard-cased bag with a lot of partitions. This way, it is easier to carry all of the equipment even while traveling.
2. Do not stress your camera:
A lot of beginner photographers keep on clicking the shutter button without thinking about the right setting and framing. They end up wasting a lot of their shots. Every camera model has a set number of shots that it can take in its lifetime. It is often called as the shutter life of a DSLR camera. This gives you ample opportunities to click, learn, and improve your art.
Since we have moved from film to digital, one has the option to delete unwanted images later. But this does not mean that you keep on stressing your device. Think about the composition, camera settings, and lighting conditions before clicking. Of course, you can take a few test shots before getting to the right setting. But wasting your shots and stressing your camera is something that you should avoid.
3. Click on RAW mode:

RAW is a file format that photographers use to click sharp and crisp images. When I started photography, I clicked pictures in JPEG mode thinking it was the only file format. All of the images lacked clarity, details, and got blurry upon expanding. Later, I was introduced to RAW images which gave a solution to this problem. In simple terms, RAW files contain much more details and information as compared to other file formats.
Since they have a lot of information, they are heavier in size as compared to jpeg. One can capture minute details within a frame that are not visible to a human eye. It becomes easier to bring out rich colour tones and minute details while editing. So, make sure the selected file format is RAW or else change it in the settings.
4. Try different things:
Photography for beginners should be more about trying different things in order to expand their knowledge and understanding. Do not restrict yourself to taking photos in a particular pose or angle. Try to capture the subject from a different angle. It can make a lot of difference to the composition as well the picture. Travel to different locations, experiment with different lenses, try your hands on different photography genres like street, travel, landscapes, portrait, nature, or even wild-life.
Take manual control and explore your camera setting, play with the exposure triangle, manipulate the existing lighting conditions to get the desired impact. The more you explore, the better you get at identifying your style of photography. Implement all the basic photography tips that you may have learned from the internet or from your peers. And yes, always keep a record of your learnings so that you do not forget it in the years to come.
5. Join a photography community:
Learning comes naturally when we see the good work of our peers and learn from them. A photography community does not necessarily mean a photography class or course, but it can also be an online community where people share ideas, opinions, doubts, and solutions to each other’s problems. There are certain platforms that provide extensive information related to photography.
Explore platforms like Quora and Reddit by joining relevant groups related to your interest. By becoming a member you can put forth a question, answer a question put by another member as well as comment your opinion related to the post. Apart from these two, there are various forums on the internet where you can get a lot of camera-related or DSLR photography tips.
You can also join various groups on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. You can share your pictures by participating in the daily thread, compete in the weekly or monthly contest, and keep yourself updated with the latest happenings in the photography world.

What Sylvester Stallone Has Taught Me About Business
June 2, 2020 5 min read
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
First of all, a disclaimer: I don’t know Sylvester Stallone. I’ve never met him. But I admire him. To me, he embodies the values, foibles and determination that make people fundamentally admirable and make entrepreneurs successful. I’ve learned a lot from Stallone, both from the man himself and from the iconic characters he’s created over his remarkable career.
Related: 7 Movies on Netflix All Entrepreneurs Should Watch
1. Create your own niche
Stallone’s biography is a classic rags-to-riches tale. A struggling, briefly homeless, wannabe-actor, Stallone bounced from bit part to bit part, roles that are only notable now because the actor did indeed achieve greatness. How did he do it? He stopped waiting for a great role to land in his lap. He wrote the damn movie himself in 1975, the iconic film that would go on to be nominated for ten Academy Awards: Rocky. The sometimes gritty, working class hero of the film, Rocky Balboa, understood that he had to find success on his own terms. As Rocky said, “I stopped thinking the way other people think a long time ago. You gotta think like you think.” In business, you’ve got to find and develop your points of difference – those things that make you unique and valuable.

2. Early trauma doesn’t have to limit future success
When Stallone was born, forceps were used during the delivery. He suffered nerve damage as a result, leaving him with a partially paralyzed face. Rather than letting a challenge intimidate him, Stallone instead created characters for whom a distinctive sneer and slightly slurred speech were plausible distinguishing qualities.
3. Fitness forever
Stallone is currently 73 years old, and he looks more fit than most men half his age. He’s made staying healthy a priority his entire life. Though he may not have the 2.8 percent body fat he attained while training for Rocky III, his 2005 book, Sly Moves: My Proven Program to Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, and Live your Dream, details how important fitness is to both mental and physical health. That’s inspiring.

4. Stay humble
Stallone isn’t an angel. He’s a real person with real faults and weaknesses. After he found fame and success, he also found himself seduced by the trappings of wealth. A 1982 article in Rolling Stone explains: “Sylvester Stallone remembers the exact moment when he realized that he was a self-aggrandizing asshole. He was purring along in his Clénet, which is a car priced above $80,000, and he had owned it for two weeks and thought it was a beautiful machine right up until he glanced out and saw the image of that extraordinary vehicle reflected in a store window, and he said to himself: ‘What self-aggrandizing asshole would drive a car like that?’” He sold that car the next day. Flashy cars don’t make us good, successful people, and I learned that lesson from Stallone. Likewise, running a successful business isn’t just about the money and status. It’s about creating jobs and making our communities better.
5. Winning isn’t everything
It’s funny. If you ask most people (okay, most normal people who aren’t Stallone-obsessed) what happens at the end of Rocky, they’ll tell you he wins the big fight. And they’re wrong. The first movie in the Rocky series doesn’t end in victory, at least not a victory in the ring. Rocky Balboa’s triumph in the film isn’t a knockout, and it’s not even the judges’ decision. Spoiler alert: Rocky’s opponent, Apollo Creed wins in a split decision. Rocky is victorious because he worked hard, labored against incredible odds and went the 15 rounds with the world’s best. And, of course, he did it with dignity, humility and tons of heart. My professional goal reflects a similar ethos: I want to work hard, deliver excellent results and be proud of my work, just as Rocky Balboa found victory on his own terms.

6. It’s okay to be silly
Sylvester Stallone made a career playing tough guys, from Rocky Balboa to John Rambo. But what did he do when his young son, Sage wanted to see his dad on The Muppet Show? Stallone donned a gladiator costume, engaged in ridiculous “combat” with a life-sized, floppy lion in front of an audience of Muppet and sang a bizarre version of “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.” That’s right, Sylvester Stallone appeared on episode 320 in 1979. It’s campy, it’s silly and I love it. Prioritizing fun and family over image is heroic in my book.
7. There’s value in struggle
Success that comes easily is never as cherished as the success that’s achieved as a result of hard work and dedication. And Stallone has a deep understanding of the value of struggle: “If you don’t have a mountain, build one and then climb it. And after you climb it, build another one; otherwise you start to flatline in your life.”
If anyone earned the right to rest on his laurels, Sylvester Stallone has. But he doesn’t. With new projects in development and production, he’s not stopping. Why do I love Stallone? Because he embodies the nobility of hard work. He is the entrepreneurial sprit, personified. He faced difficulties, literally from day one, and he’s created his own success.
