FAQ + About (for mobile)
About me: My name is Milli (she/her), 25yrs. I love taking photos of nature and my Subaru. I’m a huge nerd about mushrooms, plants, and skulls. I’ve been hiking ever since I was a little kid and at this point I feel at home in the woods.
I have a flock of chickens, a boyfriend, a dog, and waaay too many house plants
Did you take all the photos on this blog?
Yep, every photo posted here was taken by yours truly unless otherwise noted (very rare).
What camera/lenses do you use?
My crop sensor/work kit is:
Nikon D7100
10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR
Dolica ZX600B103 Tripod
My full frame kit is:
Nikon D850
Sigma 150-600mm f5.6-6.3
50mm f/1.8 G
60mm f/2.8 ED Macro
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR G
17-35mm f2.8
20mm 1.8 ED sold
Sigma 150-500mm f5.6-6.3 sold
Kenko extension tubes
Raynox 250
Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB (works for macro + everything else)
Filters and other gear:
Hoya circular polarizers + Stop down/up kit
Nikon camera backpack (discontinued)/TARION Camera Backpack
Instax Mini 90
Other cameras I’ve owned:
D50
D200
D3000
D7000
Here’s my lens wish list, some are on there for fun and some I actually want.
What camera gear would you recommend for a beginner?
Before you worry too much about getting the best gear, make sure you learn how to use it first. You could go out and buy the fanciest camera and lenses and still not take good photos because you don’t know how to use your camera or how to “see”. There’s also a saying, “you marry your lenses and date your bodies”. Invest in good lenses, preferably full frame compatible ones in case you ever decide to upgrade to full frame, and get a cheaper body to start. With that out of the way…
If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend getting a refurbished or used camera from the D7100+ line. They’ve come down in price as of late and are pretty solid cameras. Just make sure to check the shutter count.
I’d skip anything from the D3000 & D5000 lines. They’re not bad cameras but they do not have built in autofocus meaning they rely on the lens itself having autofocus. This isn’t horrible but it does limit what lenses you can use (and some of the lenses that won’t autofocus with those cameras are good AND cheap) and that can be confusing for a beginner.
As for a lens, a 50mm f/1.8, or 35mm f/1.8 is a great lens. Both lenses are inexpensive, have good quality glass, and can used for nearly everything. The 18-55mm lens that comes with cameras isn’t bad either.
I don’t shoot Canon/Sony/whatever else so I can’t give any advice there sorry!
How did you learn to take photos?
LOTS of practice, I first picked up a camera back in 2013. In high school and college I took photography classes but ultimately I didn’t really learn much from them, they started at too basic of a level.
I did learn a lot about photography from taking art classes however. They taught me framing, how to use shadows/light, and movement in a photo (where does your eye travel when you view an image/art piece). My mom is also a professional photojournalist so I picked up some knowledge from her and my grandfather who’s also a published photographer.
How can I take better photos?
Again, lots of practice. Learn what every setting and button on your camera does, try different shooting modes, take the same photo at several different apertures and shutter speeds to see what changes. You can learn a lot from reading articles too but the best way to learn, imo, is by doing. Don’t worry about getting the best gear and the best camera, learn how to take photos first.
Study other photographers photos, and even paintings, and see what you like. Pay attention to directional lines and where your eye travels. Learn how to use Photoshop/Lightroom (just pirate it). Take photos in different weather, lighting, and times of day.
What programs do you use to edit? What presets/filters do you use?
I use Lightroom and Photoshop Classic along with custom presets that I’ve made for different situations (fog, snow, etc) to process most of my images and then I make minor tweaks. A lot of my presets started as VSCO presets and then I kept the things I liked and changed the things I didn’t.
What is your job?
I’m a real estate photographer specializing in short term rentals. I love it.
Are you related to Eddie Vedder?
Yep, we’re very distantly related. Something like 7th cousins twice removed but I’ve never met him.
Can you add a photo to your print shop?
Sure! Just tell me the name of the photo (or link it if possible, I reuse a lot of names) you want added and I’ll get it up there.
May I use one of your photos?
I’m 100% ok with people using my photos as a reference for drawing/painting, I’d even love to see the result. For anything else, just shoot me an ask beforehand and I’ll let you know. Please do not repost my photos on Tumblr or elsewhere without my permission.

A Glimpse into Torii Gate Architecture at Kawaguchi Asama Shrine
Location: Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Pref., Japan Timestamp: 15:24・2024/03/20
Pentax K-1 II + DFA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 + CP 28 mm ISO 100 for 1/200 sec. at ƒ/7.1
The large torii gate warmly welcomes visitors to the cedar-tree lined approach to the Kawaguchi Asama Shrine. Many of these trees are 800 years old and have stood tall since the Kamakura Period (1185–1333).
Historical records indicate the original torii gate was built to a height of approximately 13 m (42.65 ft) in 1688, and rebuilt in 1697 to a height of 16.4 m (53.80 ft).
The current torii gate was built of concrete in 1965 and stands approximately 18 m (59.05 ft) high. One of the cornerstones of the original gate remains at the right foot of the current gate.
Discover more about the fascinating history and symbolism of the torii gate at Kawaguchi Asama Shrine. Delve into the meaning behind the inscription on the gate, explore the intricate design elements of this shrine and similar types, and provide a glossary of key Japanese words used in torii gate construction. Plus, find Google Maps links for easy navigation and additional source materials for further reading. Read the full write-up here: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20240320-torii

The Infantry Support Tank Model 87 was developed at the start of the Tartarus Wars to give scouts and motor infantry units organic fire support with HEAT, HE/FRAG, and APDS rounds to deal with soft skinned vehicles or IFVs, hostile Tartarus fauna, and hardened targets commonly built by Tirek's Forces such as pillboxes, entrenched fighting positions or machine gun nests.
22 rounds of 105mm can be carried in the bustle autoloader, but a typical combat load in the infantry support role is only 15-18 rounds. Ammunition is fully separated from the crew by bulkheads and additional rounds can be carried in wet stowage bins. The breech can be serviced through a sliding door.
Clydesdale's Oreworks & Mfg. have supplied IST models for the former Mustang Transitional Council Administration and post-independence the Mustang Defense Forces.

AL-QASSAM BRIGADES INTRODUCE RUSSIAN-MADE SHMEL ROCKET TO THE GAZA BATTLEFIELD
The Mujahideen fighters of the al-Qassam Brigades introduced a new Russian-made portable rocket in use on the battlefield in Gaza against Israeli Occupation Forces invading the Strip.
Al-Qassam fighters used for the first time the Russian-made RPO-A anti-fortification shell, commonly known as "Schmel", using it to target an Israeli Special Forces unit stationed in a house in Jibalia.
The RPO-A has a range of 950-meters (3'116ft) with an effective range of 300-meters (984ft).
In addition to the RPO-A rocket, al-Qassam Brigades also announced the targeting of two Israeli helicopters using SA-18 surface-to-air missiles. One in the Saftawi area north of Gaza City, with the second east of Jabalia Refugee Camp.
In addition to the targeting of Israeli vehicles, al-Qassam also mentioned that its fighters engaged with IOF soldiers in the Saftawi neighborhood for six consecutive hours over the previous night.
Al-Qassam said its fighters engaged Israeli Forces using Shawaz anti-tank explosives, along with the domestically-produced Yassin 105mm rocket and TGB anti-fortification shells.
According to the fighters, Occupation Forces were forced to call in a helicopter to cover their retreat from the position.
Al-Qassam also released footage of its fighters destroying Occupation vehicles and soldiers in the al-Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.

LONGFORD TERRACE AND CLOSE BY

(via XM1 Abrams Main Battle Tank by DarkWizard83 on DeviantArt)
The original prototype vehicle that led to one of - if not the - most powerful tank in the world, and current backbone of Us armored forces, the M1 Abrams MBT. Born out of the failed German-American MBT-70 project, the XM1 was developed by the Chrysler Motor Corporation, and in 1978 Chrysler delivered to the Army a sleek, low-silhouette heavy tank that incorporated every major technological feature of the day, including computerized controls and a laser rangefinder. But the most significant design feature of the new tank was its use of Chobham composite armor on the hull and turret. While the exact nature and composition of Chobham armor remains a closely guarded secret, the evidence suggests that it utilizes a matrix of ceramic armor tiles, layered between the vehicle's internal steel and external armored plating. When a high-velocity projectile - such as a round fired from a tank or an anti-tank missile - hits the armor, the explosion produces a high-velocity jet of gas that shears through the armor plating. In normal armor, this jet of gas - once it had passed through the outer armor - would blast into the hull of the tank, causing irreprible damage and often killing the crewmen inside. However, with Chobham armor's interweaved layers of ceramic composite, the forces that would normally tear into a tank's hull are forced to spread out and dissipate over a much wider area, leaving the inner hull intact. This not to say that Chobham armor renders a tank invincible - any hit will still cause exterior damage, and a powerfiul direct hit could still damage or disable the tracks or sensitive electronic equipment. But it would keep the crew alive, and often protect the tank itself enough to keep fighting. Another key crew safety feature is the vault-like armored compartment that houses the Abrams' primary ammunition. One of the primary causes of a tank's destruction has not been the direct result of armor-pierecing hits, but the inderict results of those hits ignigting and detonating the tank's munitions. To protect this, a kevlar and steel armored plate seperates the crew from the ammunition store. Same with the tank's fuel supply. Even if the compartments were pierced, and the ammunition or fuel ignited, the protective plates would insulate the crew from explosion and fire. In combat, the Abrams has proven to be second to none. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, M1s were able to take out Iraqi tanks at distances as long as 4km. Of the nearly 2,000 Abrams to see combat in the conflict, only 18 were ever taken out of service due to combat damage, and none resulted in any crew casulties. In 2003 and onwards during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Abrams again demonstrated a mastery of the battlefield, driving to Baghdad virtually unopposed. However, the Abrams clearly showed its vulnerability to ambush attacks, with a number of M1s severly damaged and disabled from RPGs, and far more frequently by roadside IED bomb traps. However, even when caught in some of the largest IED explosions, crew casualties have so far been astoundingly low, a testament to the M1s protection and survivability. While no future M1's are planned for production, a number of older models are currently slated for upgrade to current standards over the next few years, and the Abrams will continue to serve with the Us Army and Marine Corps. for mcuh of the century to come.
