2023 Wrap

Since there was no Tumblr year in review this time around, I made my own! Ok, full disclosure, I was already going to make my own. For some reason I started tracking everything I posted back at the beginning of the year and last week I totaled things up just for my own information but then I thought…why not share it?

I’m only including fandom stuff here because I do not want to attempt to figure out how many posts I’ve put together for my other lists (Writer’s Corner, ADHD Stuff, Poly Stuff) but my most popular post was this ADHD one. It has over 90,000 notes and is still climbing.

Law’s End: I call this a project, not just a new story because it was supposed to be a bit more far-reaching than just a story with character profiles, mock news articles, and multiple episodes. So far there are two character profiles (graphics for that by @harleybeaumont), one article, and many fabulous extras made by @secretaryunpaid. I am working on wrapping up episode one. Once the question of who killed Trent is answered, episode two will move on to a new mystery, while still focusing on the relationships between the main characters.

Word Warriors: Again, this is more than just a blog. It’s a Discord group, live discussions, a peer support group, and a critique group. The blog itself provides a list of writing resources and advice in addition to information about the Discord group, the live discussion schedule, and notes from past sessions.

Cordonia Royal Airlines: This is more of a collaborative project than a series. There will eventually be images posted as well as drabbles, one-shots, and chapters written by other contributors. (That’s the plan anyway.)

Personal Milestones Passed:

1,000 followers (now over 1,400 but waiting to hit 1,500 to post it)

1,000,000 words posted on Tumblr.

Published my first book in February.

Blog Shut Down:

Who could forget the infamous blog shutdown of 2023? It went down on July 25th and didn’t come back up until August 29th. Well, maybe everyone but me could forget it. I was in withdrawal lol. Five weeks of being mostly off Tumblr forced me to examine and reevaluate a lot of things. And even though I was thrilled to finally be unblocked, things aren’t the same. And that’s okay. Things change, life marches on.

I am by no means saying I’m out of here. Never fear. As long as I have fanfiction to write, I suppose I’ll be posting it here. I just feel less and less like working on my TRR stuff. I still want to finish the series I’ve started, and I’ve found I still have plenty of ideas for one-shots or short miniseries, but I’m not sure I have another epic, long TRR saga in me. Who knows, though? I’ve said that before and been proven wrong. I don’t control when inspiration happens or where the muse takes me.

I don’t know the fate of all those side blogs yet. Since I recently reorganized my master list, (yet again), I don’t know that they are needed. For now, they will remain as basically parking lots. Just a different way to organize my content.

The Rest of Tumblr:

2023 was the year I finally figured out how Tumblr works! I now understand the phrase shitposting on main. I discovered the rest of Tumblr, not just this little corner of it. From Goncharov to other fandoms to the existence of entire communities that I belong wholeheartedly to: Queer, neurodivergent, polyamorous, writers, etc. I found my people on this hell site.

What’s Next:

The Choices fandom will always have a special place in my heart, and I have made real, lifelong friends here and for that, I’ll always be grateful. My just over two years here have had their ups and downs for sure, but the ups far outweigh the downs. (If they didn’t, I would have left long ago).

Some are closer to done than others and there are a few that I just haven’t had any inspiration or excitement for in a while. I also have many one-shots in process.

And @harleybeaumont got me to play Heaven's Secret (#romanceclub) and not going to lie, no choose your own adventure story has grabbed my attention like this since TRR. And yes, there is already a folder marked “Heaven’s Secret” on my laptop with three WIPs in it!

Then there’s my original fiction. Long before I found Tumblr and got bitten by the fanfic bug, I was posting flash fic on my own website, saving short stories for submission to anthologies, and working on a few different original novels. I want to get back to that. Not to mention a lifetime worth of poetry that needs to be sorted, organized, and published.

All of the above may have to be put on hold as I navigate life with constant volleyball tournaments, a continuing search for the right second career, and a burgeoning business to manage and contend with. Not to mention a five-year-old with high energy, high needs, and high sensory-seeking behaviors. Life is complex on the best days.

Meanwhile, I’ve found that I really enjoy running the discussions for Word Warriors, giving feedback on other people’s work, and helping other writers on their journey. I can’t wait to get back to that in January.

I don’t know what 2024 holds but I am wishing the best for each and every one of you. Let life’s adventures continue!

It’s Sunday, so….BEER LEAGUE UPDATE!! Tonight eas another tie game, 2-2. So we’re 1-0-3. We really like ties, apparently.

The organization that this is through (HockeyFinder) has leagues in almost every state, but I’m from Minnesota which has by far the most. State of hockey, and all. It’s incredibly unusual that no one in my family played growing up. My older brother plays baseball (91 was randomly assigned to me at school, but I kept using it once I could choose because his baseball number is 19) but it’s a club team at his college just like mine. I like to give him a hard time cause he called me unathletic a lot growing up (the only sport I did past middle school is karate, and that’s not a team) and now we play sports at the same level, LMAO.

As is becoming typical, I skated half the game! It was tough the first time I did it but it gets more manageable every time. I’m used to having karate training 2-3 times a week and skating on my day off of work so I was already in decent shape. The first few practices at school nearly killed me though. I was not used to skating, much less with all that gear.

My highlight of tonight’s game was having a takeaway and then carrying that puck up the ice into the offensive zone! I’m getting better with having the puck…I don’t just hit it to the other team because I’m not looking up anymore. Lowlight was wiping out while getting ready for a face-off. I just fell with no contact whatsoever. Everyone got a good laugh out of that, including me. At school, big falls during practice get stick-taps, because falling generally means you’re pushing yourself. Who needs to be vertical to play hockey, right??

To answer your question from the last update, the Wild are my favorite team because I’m from MN, and Fleury is my favorite on that team. I yell his name in a terrible French accent any time he does anything because it amuses me and annoys my brother. But Sid is my favorite player overall, and the Pens are my second team. I have a lucky Crosby jersey that I wore for every game of their playoff push except for the Boston game (on accident). I’m pretty sure I was controlling fate via jersey. I never washed the jersey in all that time because that felt like the most Sid-like move. My goalie buddy’s favorite player of all time is Flower, so we find it funny that we completely coincidentally picked favorites that match our positions (forward and goalie) and also happen to be friends.

I am so impressed by the physical fitness it takes to skate for that long. Wow. I also love that you are unafraid to fall over and it's taken in good humour! It sounds like a really nice and supportive group.

I am so enchanted at the idea of hockey finder and have just spent about fifteen minutes clicking around the website deciding which game I'm going to join in my imagination. In my heart I will be at the women's pick up game at a place called Bloomington mostly because I like the sound of it and it says for beginners. That probably sounds so dumb but in the same way I think people dream of like... I don't know, coming to London and wandering around the landmarks I dream of Hockey In Small Town America. I have yet to convince my husband to come on a hockey holiday with me but I'll wear him down eventually.

You are inspiring me to look into whether there's any hockey I can watch near me though... I feel like there must be some in London...

Re: Flower I wholeheartedly understand your love. I missed the flower era in real time and have been reliving it through my ITR rewatch and oh my goodness. He's so delightful and I'm almost glad I missed seeing him be a penguin because I'm not sure I would have survived his trade. I am very glad he is well loved and appreciated by the Wild fans though!

Finally, I'm cracking up at your lucky sid jersey! You need to bring it back for this year please! The only thing I found that could accurately predict a win last season was me watching the game from the bathtub. I know that sounds bizarre, but every time I watched a game from the bath, we won, and won very well. Unfortunately, that only works with afternoon (evening for me) weekend games because taking a bath from midnight-2am on a weeknight isn't really it. Although as I write this I realise it's probably just that our old men played better earlier in the day because it wasn't too close to bedtime...

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or Why not? I do! If someone took the time to comment, I want to do the same. I remember the first response I received after leaving a comment, and it was so exciting. And, some of those first authors I read I now consider friends. Also, if I'm having a bad day, seeing a notification that someone commented makes that day not so bad.

6. What is the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I think I specialize in humor, fluff, and HEs. I want someone to feel good after reading one of my fics, or to have a good laugh. But, in Breaking Down (the prequel to Rings), Arielle has the baby. You already know what will happen to her, so, for me, it was sad because I really liked her as a character, and she was just what David needed at that time in his life before his world was turned upside down.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably the epilogue in Rings. David and Patrick finalize Patrick adopting Maddy and she changes her last name to Rose.

8. Do you get hate on fics? No, but I did get a criticism on Open Wide because I did not use the right anesthesia on David! LOL

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Not really, but I have dabbled in it. I don't feel particularly good at it, so I tend to keep it to soft kisses, tender moments, fluff.

I also got hated on everything I write from an ex friend (used to be an ex moot, the same ex moot who ended up being fatphobic) after I ended our friendship! Even though she wrote as “cringey” or even cringier shit when she used to be on here 😂

there was also a sub post about how “keegan wouldn’t break into your house and jerk off” referring to my stalker keegan piece LMAO i don’t write for him anymore and i’m giving that fic away (for personal reasons) but it’s so funny 😭

55! Jeeeeeez that's a lot.

295k. (Maybe it's because I come from the writing month world but that's the only stat I genuinely pay attention to lol.)

In current times, only Critical Role—back in the day I wrote on ff.net for Heroes and Castle and a few YA books.

This was... actually my first shadowgast fic! One-shot set right after 91.

Okay, so, this fic. I will not describe it, as I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I started it right after hiatus with lofty ambitions and promptly realized my hubris, and now it is definitely never going to be finished. I did not get far. My deepest apologies to anyone who has read it and wanted more.

seeing eye to eye

One-shot of the nein running into Essek's family, and Beau understanding him a little better, rich kid with shitty parents to rich kid with shitty parents. A very specific characterization of Deirta in here, mostly filtered through Beau's mentality, which was so fun to write.

OLD GUARD AU MY BELOVED. I desperately want to write in this au more but have not had the time or ideas, but holy shit I love this au so much.

Another pre-97 shadowgast one-shot—the peace talks go very wrong and Caleb and Essek end up pulling a Titanic on a plank of wood after the ship sinks. Very fun, very no longer canon-compliant.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

So, okay, I do not, but this is a Thing for me, because I have, inexplicably, deep panic about responding to ao3 comments. I do not know why. I can feel physical panic thinking about it now. I aggressively hate it because I do really want to respond to comments because commenters are so lovely! I think it is a combination of my brain not knowing the culture of ao3 interaction well enough that it seems alarming (thanks, neurodivergence) and college screenwriting workshops in which I was taught not to respond during critique.

In any case, I do not have the same weird panic about tumblr interactions, so I'm always down to chat here.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

You know, for all of the angst that I write, I don't really write angsty endings. I think my two main Verin-centric fics (laid out one by one and this guilt-ridden heart) end kind of angstily, because that relationship isn't gonna be fixed in a conversation. But in general I think the worst I've got is bittersweet.

7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I don't—I'd have to have a really, really good concept to write a crossover.

8) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not that I can remember, though who knows if I got any in high school. I'm a little impervious to flames anyway—again, workshop classes helped with the reminders that critique is what's useful, while hate is just, 'you can't please everyone'.

9) Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I do not!

10) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I mean, not that I'm aware of lol.

11) Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope!

Nope.

I mean, currently? Shadowgast. I don't have an all-time.

sweet child. "Someday!" she says, shaking her fist at an unforgiving god.

15) What are your writing strengths?

I've suddenly forgotten every comment I've ever gotten. I am pretty good at grounded settings when I put in the effort. I think I am good at matching character voices—far better than inventing new ones.

And in terms of writing process... I managed to decide somewhere along the way that I like my own writing? Which is very hard, but also once you do that, it's a lot easier to just write instead of being hung up on quality, and it's then easier to notice when you're falling out of your own voice or when you actually need to rewrite a scene. I think I forced myself into this practice because I am soooo bad at sitting down and editing, so I have to do it as I write, and I had to get over the "this writing sounds like me therefore it is bad" feeling to manage that. (This has been my "love yourself as a writer" high horse.)

16) What are your writing weaknesses?

I think I overexplain. And on the other side, I lean so heavily into showing emotion via physical sensation that I forget to actually write the emotion.

And on a similar process high horse, I am so bad about feeling constantly like I need to write everything right now. This is primarily a problem because if I get too in my head about it, I end up writing none of it. I have not found a way to combat this, except to put one sentence in front of the other. (This is not helped by my ever-increasing pile of wips and ideas lol.)

17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I patently refuse to do it, because I hate the idea of butchering a language I don't know, and because I tend to try to draw as little attention to the fact that a thing is written as possible, and if a language has to be translated via a glossary or something, it's drawing more attention to that, and even if it's something I'm leaving untranslated, someone who speaks that language will know that I have butchered it. That being said, I don't dislike it when I'm reading!

How I feel about this character

I love her. I love her practicality, I love how capable she is. I love her for the courage it must have taken to admit her feelings to Eivor. 

I find it depressing when people reduce her character to a cheating wife. You mostly get this talking point among gamer-dudes. “Bro’s before ho’s!” seems to be the stated consensus among certain circles of fans. But I’ve also noticed a startling number of people I wouldn’t expect - even other lgbtq folks! - who fall into those exact talking points. I find this a bizarre failure of imagination, and an inability to empathize with situations they don’t personally recognize.

Or maybe it’s a misunderstanding of the role of marriage in other time periods? People don’t necessarily marry out of a devoted love for one another across time and culture. There were plenty of marriages where love was never even expected to come about. 

Great lengths are taken to explain the purpose of Sigurd and Randvi’s arranged marriage. Attention is brought to her ambivalence towards this man she barely seems to know. Her seeming revulsion for intimacy with him - “farts and honeyed breath” anyone? And still people are unable to separate this marriage from how marriage works in modern day. 

There is no modern equivalent to their situation.

Like Eivor, I have an older brother. Would I ever date an ex of his in the year of our lord 2021? Fuck no! Would I date my brother’s ex if it were the ninth century and I grew up in a community of ~200 people and had met maybe two or three other sapphic women in my entire life? Possibly!

You can ignore the rapport, mutual respect, affection, and lingering glances. You can claim they have no chemistry. I heartily disagree, but I get that chemistry is a personal thing. Yet I am deeply weirded out by folks who respect Sigurd’s dibs over Randvi’s clearly stated unhappiness in the marriage. Claiming it’s “only a cheating narrative” is just placing more importance on the modern heternormative “bro code,” than Randvi’s personhood.

Ha! Sigurd again, actually! Same as Eivor! I think that they are a terrible married couple, but if circumstances had been different, they would have made a great team. I think she genuinely likes and admires him - he’s magnetic, he’s charismatic, he’s, well, a shitty leader… but he’s not a bad guy. She’s just… a lesbian. And sometimes these things happen. 

My unpopular opinion about this character

I guess my most unpopular opinion is that her story is not a cheating narrative (or rather, that’s the least important part of it?). It’s an unpopular opinion if you look at the full scope of the fandom, but a very popular opinion among the corner that creates fanwork, so I guess it’s all in how you look at it.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

LET HER LEAVE THE MAP ROOM. Another date would be nice. You can play orlog with the other long term relationships. That would be nice! It’s sad that she is so clearly the intended romance - just going off of plot relevance - but she’s so restricted by the game mechanics. Also, as with Eivor, I wish they’d committed to the romance being canonical. I’m happy with how highly Eivor clearly esteems her.

Agents of Shield Rewatch 7x09 As I Have Always Been

First of all, we’re not going to discuss how many times I’ve seen this episode because...welll...the number is pretty high. But this is legit my #1 favorite episode of all time. This episode is an example of this show firing on all cylinders and just at it’s absolute best. And it’s really one of the last times we get to see our family all working together, and that’s where I think this show gets its strength. 

Anyway, this may get super long idk I just have a lot of feelings about this ep.

The number of times Chloe must have had to film waking up in this thing is probably pretty high

Ok first things first, my very favorite thing is Sousa using that box of gloves as a pillow because having spent a good portion of my lower to mid-20s in labs I will not pretend like I haven’t considered doing that

“I was so much happier asleep” MY MOOD EVERY SINGLE DAY

Ok, since I used to be a med tech (aka I worked in a hospital lab), I have questions about why they have so many green and blue tubes there. I mean...green tops are heparin tubes so I guess you can use those for basic chemistry tests, so that might be usable for multiple things. But those blue tops? That’s sodium citrate and the only thing I know of we used those for were coagulation tests. Which require some specific equipment. Does Jemma plan to run that many PT/PTTs?? And on what???

Maybe there’s enough for a fic plot in there

He not just immediately believes her about the time loops, but he immediately understands what she is saying about what is happening. Thus he knows this isn’t really a sacrifice play because he’ll come back AND he’ll have saved her the trouble of forgetting. But also, he trusts her so implicitly that he’s willing to risk his life for her. 

It’s beautiful y’all

And poor Daisy has to add watching Sousa die to her list of traumas cool cool cool

Daisy immediately pops up to ensure herself that Sousa is still there napping away and like

I legit thought this was going to be the peak Dousy moment in this episode when she stops and just watches him breathing for a bit hahaha

She does not want to leave him there either and then the way she says, “We’re making progress” then adds a kind of soft “thanks to Sousa” like

Daisy is going through some stuff here

And Coulson realizes that Enoch is the problem

While lovely it definitely gives you away

The saddest thing to me about this is that Daisy can’t seem to understand why he’s always willing to help and wants to watch over her. It’s like she still doesn’t think she’s worthy of being treated like this.

“Some of my favorite people are people like you” I CRY

Whew there’s a lot to parse here. 

First of all, I think Daisy actually really likes that Sousa is seemingly not phased by anything (or at least, not super bothered by it) because her life is always going to be chaotic that’s just facts

Second, in this very short time of knowing her, Sousa definitely has her pegged. He knows that she craves other people, but is also probably a bit scared to want to be around other people. He knows she’s hopelessly stubborn, but that’s because she cares so much. And he knows that she needs someone to have her back no matter what, because she won’t have her own.

Of course, there’s also a personal element here as indicated by the next part of their conversation. 

Also of note, when Daisy is pressing with the questions, wanting to know why he’s always there for her, she’s leaning forward while he sits back. 

Now though, when the question is a bit more personal, she sits back in a very protective stance. I think she’s a little scared of what he’ll say to her question. Because she realizes that she likes him. A lot. And what if he’s just like a generally good guy and this has nothing to do with her?

But of course, it has everything to do with her as indicated by what Sousa says next. “Not for everyone. It helps if they’re fun to be around, and if they say what they mean, and if they have that super power where they can rock things around which is very impressive.”

And Daisy’s immediate response?? SHE SMILES. Like...this is what she needs and what she wants but what she’s been too afraid to go after. And here it is just falling in her lap.

Now that everything is out in the open, they are both leaning towards each other...

Also I love that she says, “That’s awfully specific” and he doesn’t shy away from her. He just agrees with her. They both know what that really means.

And they both like it

Legit here I was chanting KISS KISS KISS but I thought it was a missed moment

I am so happy I was wrong

So the new plan is to misdirect Enoch by having Sousa go in to take the implant out, but really Sousa is leading Enoch into a fight with him, Mack, May, and Elena and like what a squad

But also this was a super plan, and I wonder if Coulson was involved or if this was Daisy/Sousa original

Either option seems likely

Daisy asks for help and Sousa immediately agrees to help and THAT IS WHAT DID IT FOR DAISY JOHNSON FRIENDS

Like...I know she’s feeling under the gun for time because Coulson said same thing but faster

But also, peak romance is someone just wanting to help her no questions asked which, given her history makes complete sense

She needs a constant, someone who will be there for her no matter what

I feel like this started in some ways with Lincoln. He was just so sweet and helpful to her. And granted he had his own demons to deal with, but in the end he was willing to give up everything to save the world and Daisy herself.

But he also showed Daisy that she could expect love and support and she was worthy of that (even if she doubted it later)

So here’s this guy, who’s just smart and kind and good and clearly into her

So, knowing that this could be one of her lasts chance to do this and realizing that at any rate he’ll totally forget about it anyway, she makes a move

And like this kiss?? It’s hot y’all

You can tell Daisy just like lol Imma kiss him, but then they are both caught in this moment and go back for me

But also he definitely led for that second kiss 

“That was nice” like hahahaha amazing undersell Daisy

And then she traces his collarbone like whoa I need to fan myself for a bit

“Now we need to drop a space robot”

I can’t tell what Sousa is more confused by- that statement or the kiss itself

Imagine being Sousa though. You just got woken up by this beautiful woman who asks for you help then kisses you when you say “Sure thing.”

He’s truly living the dream

Oh also we’re 11 km from the vortex now

It turns out Enoch is the answer to all our problems

But also we have to kill him in the process :(

And then poor Simmons has a breakdown over leaving Alya presumably, but also she’s a better mom than me because after 3 years in space with one of my little super geniuses I’d be more than ready for a vacay idk

I love my kids but they are...a lot

I guess Daisy left Sousa to sleep for this loop

Enoch immediately understands what is happening :(

I love that Enoch has reached the point where he feels like this entire crew is his family and would sacrifice themselves for him

This whole thing is breaking my heart...not just Enoch in the process of dying, but Coulson actually talking about his deaths and Daisy having to try and process all this

“Yet, this is the nature of families. I have seen it countless times on countless worlds. People arrive so we celebrate, and people leave us, so we grieve. We do what we can with the time in between, but the cycle is always there. No one escapes it. Not even me.”

This really got to me. My family has changed a lot through the years. People have come and gone. Babies have been born. People have died. And nothing I do can change this cycle. Sometimes it makes me happy; sometimes it hurts. But nothing I do can change that process, and that’s not always easy for me to accept.

I think Daisy and Coulson are having a moment here too, where Daisy is telling both Coulson and Enoch that even though they are not human, that doesn’t make them any less alive to the people who love them

RIP Enoch, you were the bestest Chronicom to ever robot

And of course we get one last buzzkill with Nathaniel and Kora

Ok first some timeloop math. We saw 21 loops on screen, but loop #5 was loop #90 for Coulson. So if we figure Daisy died say...every 10-15 ish time loops and it took her 2 or 3 to wake Coulson up, we can probably add an additional 25 time loops or so. So we’re probably looking at around 130 loops roughly.

Of course this begs the question, did Daisy decide to kiss Sousa more than once? It’s possible. I kind of like to think she did. 

First of all, mad props to Joel for nailing that death scene. He was absolutely incredible. And clearly this episode rates 1000000000/10 on the Dousy scale because like...everything. The talk, the kiss, the sacrifice...amazing. I was 95% sure I was getting ending Dousy after this. This episode also gets 50000/10 on the Teamwork! scale because our team did so well and were strongest when they worked together. And of course Enoch gets a 10000000000000000/10 on the Good Chronicom scale because he legit was the bestest Chronicom that could ever not-live.

1. What is my fondest childhood memory?

My fondest childhood memories definitely consist of the lovely people who I grew up with and derived my sense of humor/silliness from: my cousins Anna & Emily, Savannah -- my childhood best friend, and Kaleb, my eternal crush. These memories consist of them in elementary school, camp, and my grandma's house in San Antonio.

Probably nachos/chips/chips & queso.
