Yes, but I published one of those books 19 (?!?!?!) years ago and the other 12 (!?!?!?!?) years ago. What have I been up to since then?

My brother Hank and I started Good.store, which delivers high-quality socks, coffee, and soap to your home and donates 100% of its profit to charity. Through good store, we've raised over $7,500,000 to support efforts to radically reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, where as recently as 2019, one in seventeen women could expect to die in pregnancy or childbirth.

(In fact, technically I am here on tumblr as an unpaid intern for the awesome coffee club, which you should really sign up for if you like ethically sourced coffee that tastes delicious and doesn't enrich billionaires.)

I wrote the novel Turtles All the Way Down and then had a little existential crisis and wrote a nonfiction book called The Anthropocene Reviewed, the latter of which is my first book for adults and my first attempt to write as myself.

I helped produce made a movie adaptation (streaming now on Max!) of Turtles all the Way Down.

I helped raise my kids and supported my spouse as she wrote her book You Are An Artist and created a PBS show about art called The Art Assignment.

I ran the educational media company Complexly and the merch company dftba.com while my brother had cancer.

I bought around 2% of a fourth-tier English football team called AFC Wimbledon. Wimbledon are different from most football clubs because they are owned by their fans, each of whom gets one vote in the club's leadership regardless of how much money they put into the club.

I became obsessed with tuberculosis, the world's deadliest infectious disease (it will kill over a million people this year despite being curable), and how TB both exemplifies and reinforces human-built structures of injustice, which is the subject of a book I'm writing that will come out next year.

Phil ALSO comes out! (yeah no i'm not crying what? not them feeling comfortable enough to be themselves yeah). 2019 also brings us the adoption of a fish named Norman (a cutie) AND they also post pictures about their recent trip to Japan [the photo of Phil looking up to Dan behind the camera? yeah i am so normal about it, i swear]. There is hope in the horizon still for a Dan and Phil comeback...

BAM! A certain virus runs wild and forces everyone to stay at home. Phil continues to upload solo videos which distracted so many of us during these dark times. Dan, however is AWOL and the only pic we have of him is a shitty screenshot of him in glasses and a mask helping Phil rescue an injured pigeon (lockdown was WILD).

Also, my boy Dan post a cryptic tweet that leads to the announcement of a self-help book named YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS NIGHT (because you will <3). Nah but I can't count how many times I've sobbed reading it, just him trying to help out others who have also struggled with mental health... istg i love this man

Hey so THEY BUY THEIR FOREVER PHOUSE TOGETHER they're gonna kill me one day istg. "Dan and Phil just decided to pay a mortgage together", top 10 sentences that would kill a 2016 phan. They are slaying, they are glowing... also rip Norman the fish you will not be forgotten

So during 2014 the fates (aka a random youtuber) foretold that Dan and Phil would be married in 2022. Since that clearly didn't happen the meme PHIVORCE united the phandom once more. ALSO Dan is out there shitting on youtube (as he should) and going on his solo tour WE'RE ALL DOOMED! Which i love with all my heart and also Phil being there for him every step of the way... Nothing is sacred anymore, they've infiltrated twtphan, they're actively reposting memes and writing fanfiction about themselves. It's the wild west, everytime you get a notification is like playing Russian Rulet. Cringe is dead and Dan and Phil ARE COMING NEAR YOUR CITY on a tour named "Terrible Influence" where Phil's spent 300€ on silicone. It's a wonderful time to be a phan.

OKAY SO here's some stuff that didn't make the cut but that i find too hilarious to not mention. In no apparent order: DAN DRESSING UP AS A CATBOY, Dan and Phil playing technicians 1 and 2 on Big Hero 6 and two brothers on the Lion King (wtf was that also they gave the gorilas matching fringes), Dan dressing up as a golden pig (my boy has RANGE) and finally Dan being too embarassed to admit he stalked Phil and telling a reporter he was only asking for "editing tips" if you know what i mean

Also a short compilation of Dan and Phil losing the idgaf war against eachother THEY ARE SO THOUGHTFUL ABOUT EVERYTHING. Special mention to Daniel's 🧡 when Phil praised "We're all doomed!" and Dan's ranch metaphor to describe their relationship (just go watch the mukkbang video OH LORD)

SO, in conclusion... Dan and Phil's refusal to belittle their past and instead embrace it as part of their story while actively moving into the future alongside the phandom YEAH THAT SHIT MEANS SOMETHING. They're simultaneously healing our inner child while embracing us as the adults we've become i have many feelings about them

Here’s my entry for the Septic Art event being hosted by @rogue-of-broken-time and Turquoise Magpie! I remember loving the Septic art videos when those happened, so getting to participate in a community-hosted version is really cool! Since the theme was favorite moments, I wanted to reference the charity streams from 2019. They were always super fun, and this piece in particular is inspired by the Movember pin design. It’s the only pin I bought from the series, since JJ’s my comfort character and this pin design was inspired by him, and I still have it with me today! It’s been a pleasure being part of this community for so long, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings!

Because he participated in a benefit concert for them in 2015? Or was there a recent incident? Because the issues with AS were not well known outside of the autistic community due to their relative skill in networking and propaganda. I don’t know if it’s worth bringing forth the pitchforks for a one-off support of what he may have thought was a legitimate charity at that time. And regardless my only statements regarding the man were that he was an experienced voice actor and that I enjoyed kung fu panda, which are true regardless of if the man is a total heel. I think the more obvious and more recent call out would be that he did a stream with pewdiepie in 2019, but it could be argued that it was again for a charity event following Etika’s suicide. They only ended up raising around $30k in two days though so I’m not sure what happened with that. The guy who drinks olive oil made more than triple that in one stream for an otter’s birthday present, and needless to say olive oil man has a fraction of the following of either of those two.

There’s a lot to criticize about his actions and some of his takes are more liberal than they should be, but in the grand scheme of white Hollywood actors he’s deeply average. Most issues with him are being an out of touch white man who needs to vet non-profits better. Again, if you have evidence of him saying “AHA NOW THOSE AUTISTIC YOUTHS WILL BE PUT INTO ABA THERAPY AND EUGENICS SHALL REIGN SUPREME” then do share, but participating in charity drives his managers likely pitched to him without either party looking into it further than “oh hey a charity good publicity for a good cause” isn’t really blowing my eyebrows clean off here.

The Waynes Ethical Billionaires?

Another Gala hosted at the beautiful botanical gardens this weekend and in the glitz and glamor, the Martha Wayne foundation raised over 10 Million dollars for their continued work in the low-income neighborhood in the Park Row district. The Martha Wayne Foundation has been working on increasing food banks, addiction and suicide crisis centers, and access to medical care in parts of Gotham, and more recently around the Globe, for the past 25 years. 

Recently taking the helm of Wayne Enterprises Charitable Outreach Division, Jason Todd-Wayne reflected on his own childhood on the streets of Gotham and how more programs like these could have saved his mother from her untimely death caused by an overdose and himself from a life of crime prior to his adoption. Let me tell you not a dry eye was insight after hearing such a moving story. 

Dear readers as much as I would love to leave the story there with “local boy raises funds for the charity that helped him as a child.” I have to pose the question can such fundraising truly be ethical? If you look at the upfront cost of the event alone, the catering costs upwards of $50,000 just for the food, not counting the alcohol purchases. The venue booking cost an estimated $150,000. Entertainment costs, valet, and other expenses rounded up to $200,000. In addition, reporters Cat Grant and Vicki Vale noted that the dresses, suits, and accessories that each of the guests in attendance wore had an average price tag of $15,000-$50,000, putting the clothing cost at an estimated range of $3,750,000 - $12,500,000. Let that sink in, people spent more money last night on the outfits than they raised for the foundation.

As much as Wayne Family in partnership with the Martha Wayne Foundation tries to be champions of good and kindness in our city they are contributing less than if each of the people in attendance in lieu of fancy outfits contributed the cost of what they were going to wear to charity. Is it then even worth the effort involved in the endless stream of Galas, producing a net loss as a society? 

When we reached out to the Foundation for comment the only statement they gave was this: “We are thankful for every dollar that was donated to the Foundation at the Gala last weekend. And we are looking forward to the work that we are going to be able to do as a result.” 

We also went and met with locals in the communities that have been impacted the most by the MWF. Kevin Miller, a 33-year-old, bank worker, demonstrates how the lived experience has fueled this disenchantment with the efforts.   "I was renting and wondering, 'How can I ever afford a house?'" he adds. "My mother was a cleaner, my father was handicapped, and the folks I knew who could afford a house sought support from their parents. It wasn't enough to work and save; you had to inherit money."   According to a 2019 poll by the charity two-thirds of under-25s believe their generation will be worse off than their parents.

 And how do the rich inherit and keep their money? By stepping on the backs of the poor and hardworking community members much like yourself. There is no way for a Billionaire to exist whether new money or old that has not happened without the exploitation of those less fortunate. If they truly wanted to help others and gave all their money away, then they wouldn't be billionaires anymore, would they?

I leave you with this lingering question what do the Waynes have to hide?

Alley-Oop!

Alley-Oop! is a game I wrote with my wife in 2019 that is based on the WNBA's trip into the Wubble, a recreation center that was closed to the public, allowing the players to play in relative safety in spite of the dangerous early days of the pandemic. It was also inspired by the rise of Blaseball and Marbula One, and the idea that we as humans are really good at taking totally random noise and creating exciting stories by giving otherwise meaningless objects their own personalities.

As such, the game isn't about simulating basketball as much as it is about commentating it, and then deciding who these players are based on how the dice fall. Oh, and those dice? They are your players! Yeah! The pink d4 is Ollie Orion, and she's in the running for rookie of the year! But it's been hard for her to concentrate because she recently had a break up with that orange d10 on the other team. Maybe after this round of basketball, you and your friends will RP a scene between the two of them, where they have to shoot a commercial together. Maybe their love will be reignited?????

Alley-Oop! is also one of only a couple of games I wrote that got a print run, and the book is Gorgeous!!

Æthernet

Far and away one of my most popular games, Æthernet asks the question "What if, in the far future when humanity travels the stars and the internet is immersive VR, someone accidentally opened a rift to another dimension in the internet, and turned the internet into a literal digital hellscape?" and follows that question up with "What if we had to do dungeon crawls there as part of the gig economy?" Inspired by Doom (duh) and dozens of stories about the intersection of Magic and Technology, Æthernet is a small version of a game I want to make Very Large one day.

No Amount Of Armor: Ashcan Edition

I will probably talk about this game a ton here, but No Amount of Armor is my diet-tactics story-driven mecha RPG that takes you to the razor's edge of warfare. Mechanically, it sits between heavy tactical games like Lancer and fully story driven games like Firebrands, giving players the tools to embody characters that feel like they have a stake in the world, and build mechs that feel like they can throw a punch to level a building.

Right now, this game is still in development, and you are invited to give feedback and help shape the game's final form!

The ones that he did at the beginning of 2021 were a Philippines based internet(broadband?) company and a phone company that seems to sell throughout Africa and into places like Turkey. Those to me seemed like pick-up income streams from Covid shutdown. Then we also had the Godiva ad voice overs of 2022.

Another day another perverted man in a dress arrested for child abuse

A drag queen who performed under the name ‘Miss Rachel Rear’ has appeared in court on charges related to the possession and production of indecent and prohibited images of children.

Andrew Duncan, 24, is facing multiple counts related to 17 pieces of child sexual abuse materials he was found with. Some of the materials were media of real children, and others were illegal fantasy depictions of children engaged in obscene, pornographic acts.

Among the photographs found on Duncan’s devices were some classified as ‘Category A’ — the most serious type. Images and video in this category can depict penetrative sexual activity, bestiality, and/or sexual sadism involving children. 

Duncan is alleged to also have been in possession of and produced child sexual abuse materials via digital means, otherwise known as a “prohibited image.” In the United Kingdom, prohibited images are non-photographic media created by computer generation, cartoon, or drawing which feature pornographic and obscene depictions of children.

During his hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on October 15, Duncan was granted unconditional bail, allowing him to live freely in the community until his next court appearance. He did not enter a plea on the three charges he is currently facing.

Duncan was well-known in Sunderland for his prolific performances as a drag queen, which included having appeared at Newcastle Pride in 2016, Drag World London in 2019, and various local venues and events on a regular basis. Performing as ‘Miss Rachel Rear,’ Duncan was previously awarded “Best in Show” at Newcastle Drag Idol in 2017.

In addition to his live performances, Duncan operated a number of social media accounts and produced YouTube videos on drag-related issues. 

On his Facebook, Duncan also featured a photo of himself he noted was taken by Haydn Brown — an artist who previously photographed drag queens for a charitable calendar, the proceeds of which went to trans youth charity Mermaids.

Reduxx has seen a public Facebook live video made by another drag performer in which there are allegations made that Duncan has previously been accused of theft and sexual assaults against fellow drag artists, and that further reports have been made to the police about the alleged attacks.

The video creator stated that he made the video to address The Sunderland Echo’s coverage of Duncan’s court case, and to distance himself from and condemn Duncan’s behavior.

During the live stream, the performer noted that some in Duncan’s social circle had discovered a Twitter profile on which Duncan was alleged to have posted and retweeted pedophilic content. The discovery of the Twitter account was what prompted Duncan’s colleagues to report him to police, which ultimately led to his arrest and the charges being brought.

The Sunderland Echo has reported that Duncan’s next court appearance is at Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

When and why did you become an artist? 2019. I'd joined a discord server and I wanted to like all the cool hip artists on there

When and why did you join Bootwt? 2020 maybe? Dsmp got me into ranboo and from then I've been a big fan of their streams and now GENERATION LOSS YIPPEE!!

Why did you decide to join the BootwtDoes Charity Event? I want to help! I was one the the artists last time but I only got the submit stickers to redbubble in the end

What is your favorite Ranboo moment? Not counting generation loss? Its hard to choose but maybe 2 years ago he did the building a gingerbread house for chat stream and that was one of the first streams I could watch live from start the finish and I LOVED IT

What is your favorite bootwt inside joke? RAHHHHH

Meet our VIP: Enfys Book!

It's time for another round of Meet Our VIPs, where we introduce the amazing people who make up WordPress VIP!

Meet Enfys Book (they/them), Onboarding Technical Account Manager from Maryland, USA! They've been with Automattic and WordPress VIP since May 2019 (over 4 years!) Q: What is your role at WPVIP? I help our customers onboard to the platform and ensure their launches go smoothly. Q: What's your favorite thing about working for Automattic? Automattic is an amazing place to work because they truly value their employees. Our benefits are fantastic, and our approach to almost everything seems to be "trust people," "help each other," and "we're all on the same team." The people I work with are all committed to giving our customers a great experience and making our solution the best it can be. (Shameless plug: come work with us!)

Q: What's your favorite non-WPVIP brand at Automattic? I mean...Tumblr, obvs. Is this a trick question? Q: At Automattic, we have a LOT of "fun" Slack channels. What's your favorite? I run the VIP Music League, which is a themed playlist-building club with some light competition involved. Our Slack channel for the league is great for sharing new music and congratulating the winners of each round, and I love sharing music with folks I may not work with every day. It's a great way to get to know your colleagues. (You can start your own music league at musicleague.com) Q: What's your favorite word and why? "Oubliette" has such great mouthfeel, and it gets bonus points because I learned it from the movie "Labyrinth," which is one of my all-time favorite films.

Q: What's your favorite fandom? LoadingReadyRun. They're Canadian comedy streamers with an amazing online community. My favorite LRR things are these super-short sketches called Crapshots (CW for gun sound and imagery as part of the branding at the beginning and end of each sketch.) They've made hundreds of them, and once they had 512 of them a fan created a single-elimination tournament to find the best Crapshot (@thecrapshotbracket) I was extremely devoted to voting in every single round. They've also raised millions of dollars for Child's Play Charity through their annual multi-day streaming telethon called Desert Bus for Hope.

Q: What's your biggest claim to fame? I'm briefly visible in Britney Spears' "Behind the Music" episode, because I was helping with her autograph signing at the Mall of America in 1998.

Q: Who would win in a fight: giant pizza, aliens, or crabs? Why? Crabs, 100%. Carcinization comes for us all. Q: What are your hobbies outside of work? I'm in a weird band called the Misbehavin' Maidens (@misbehavinmaidens) that sings funny, filthy, feminist, fandom folk music. I'm also a published author in the "metaphysical nonfiction" space. I'm currently working on three more books to be published in the next couple of years.

Profiles of Pride: June 10th!  🏳️‍🌈Abigail Thorn🏳️‍🌈

Abigail Thorn (born 24 April 1993) is a British YouTuber, actress, and playwright, best known for producing the YouTube channel Philosophy Tube.

Philosophy Tube began in 2013, when Thorn sought to provide free lessons in philosophy in the wake of the 2012 increase in British tuition fees. In 2018, her videos became more theatrical, beginning to incorporate dramatic studio sets, lighting, costuming and makeup. The channel has been positively received by critics, and has over one million subscribers.

In 2019, Thorn hosted a livestream on Twitch in which she read plays from the Complete Works of Shakespeare for the mental health charity Samaritans. The stream lasted five days, featured a number of guests, and raised over £100,000 for Samaritans. In September and October 2022, The Prince—a play written by and starring Thorn—ran Off West End. The transgender-themed work is based on characters in Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1 becoming self-aware.

Thorn publicly came out as a transgender woman in January 2021, with the video Coming Out As Trans – A Little Public Statement and the more theatrical Identity: A Trans Coming Out Story.

In 2022, Thorn was awarded an Off West End Theatre Award ("Offie") in the "OneOff" category. The awarding body credited her as "a pioneer for trans rights" across her YouTube work, Shakespeare charity livestream, and role in The Prince.

Thorn was nominated in the category Online Influencer for a 2021 British LGBT Award. Thorn declined the nomination citing moral and political disagreements with the award's sponsors.

Thorn wrote and was the acting lead in the Off West End play, The Prince, at the Southwark Playhouse. The show features characters becoming self-aware and trying to escape from Shakespeare's oeuvre, centering around Henry IV, Part 1 and Hamlet. Natasha Rickman served as director. The eight-person cast was majority-trans. Previews began on 15 September 2022 and the performance run was from 19 September 2022 to 8 October 2022. In February 2023, a filmed performance of the play was released on Nebula.
