Mmmm I really want to critique this article but the rest of it is behind a paywall and attacking only the first half of his argument seems petty.
But fuck it I’mma do it anyway, because I saw the headline and I couldn’t resist.
The furthest I am able to read without paying for it is:
Here’s the four-step process to writing success that’s being passed around the Internet as if it was a jar of pickled wisdom:

And here’s what it usually ends up looking like:

Crickets.
Consistency, consistency, consistency. That’s what everyone preaches. And there’s nothing wrong with it per se. But consistency alone won’t necessarily get you somewhere. If you consistently walk down the wrong road, you’ll just end up in the middle of a desert, reciting your philosophical…
And my issue is this that writing is an art, first, before a means for profit. So my advice is instead:
Dear Newbie Writers: Stop going in with the mindset that you’ll become an NYT Bestseller on your first try, and if you measure your success by your profit, you’ll lose your love for your art blaming your empty wallet.
If that’s what this man goes on to say, good on him (and he might very well have, I don't know), but he’s put his article behind said paywall and his tagline is a doozy.
If you want to write 100 versions of the same exact trope, because you really really love that trope, fucking go for it. Does it make you happy? Are you proud of what you created?
Yes, gaining an adoring audience is every artist’s dream, but you can’t scry your way into figuring out the magical formula for success, and that magical formula might be antithetical to what you want to write.
I could absolutely write a romantacy smutfest and make bank as an SJM copycat. But I hate romantacy smutfests, and writing one in the style that her fans will read would make me miserable. And, by the time I get it published, who knows (though I do wish) if the sub-genre has already fallen out of favor and now I have this book that no one wants and that I’d be loathe to put my name on.
If writing what you love means you never find your audience, you can’t control your audience in the first place. I get frustrated myself when I don’t make sales, but it could be from any number of reasons. I know one of those reasons is not because I’m a bad writer and it’s a bad book.
I just likely haven’t found the pocket of readers who would not only enjoy it, but would then tell their friends all about it, get them to read it, tell all their friends about it, and so on.
It could be the wrong time for my genre, or it’s just buried under other books’ marketing campaigns, or I’m not on the right platform, or my SEO isn’t optimized, or my own campaigns aren’t clicking, or people are just caught up reading something else or simply doing something else.
Am I going to give up because I’m not making money? Nope. I’m doing what I love, and I do have some readers who like my work. That’s success to me. Being published, getting through that process, even if I only have 5 sales (and I do have 50), is success to me.
Bare minimum, "it's pointless if you haven't found a formula that works" is just
You are gaining experience publishing. You are still writing. You are still learning. You are still creating.
If you’re in it for profit, you’re in the wrong game.

Hey I’m thinking of doing a fic but it’ll be my first work on here and I’m quite nervous. Any advice would be appreciated. Also love the works 🧑‍🍳👌🏻👌🏻 absolutely yummy
I have two pieces of advice for you:
1. Do it scared - if you're worried the story isn't gonna attract an audience then post it anyway. If you're proud of that work then put it out there and ignore the numbers game. Social media is a construct that vanishes the minute you quit looking at a screen. Just commit to what you want and do! It! Scared!
2. On Tumblr, your tags are everything. Supposedly (correct me if I'm wrong) this cursed reblog site only pays attention to the first 5 tags, so make those ones the most important. It's all about SEO (search engine optimization) babey!!! Start broad and then get more specific.
For example: I'm gonna post an angsty hurt/comfort one-shot about Batman x Fem!reader and they're gonna fuck at the end. I have to start broad to cast the widest net, then get more specific and nitty gritty further down the tags. Remember to keep your tags actually relevant to what you're posting about, though. Don't be that guy throwing in shit like #tumblr #fun #story #amazing #look at this #unrelatedfandom, etc. etc. to get attention.
Broadest tag: DC. Batman is a DC character. Wide-ass net. You're already on the board.
Move it in a little. Get slightly less broad. Next tag: Batman. Narrowing it down but still leaving it open to a bunch of Batman fans.
Start reeling in the people looking for more specific content now. Next tag: Batman x Reader. Now you're drawing in the thirsty self shippers. Getting closer to your niche.
Two tags left in terms of SEO. Make them count. Let people get a feel for your fic without spoiling anything. What's my story about again? Oh yeah, Batman and his ladylove experience some hurt/comfort and then it gets spicy.
Next tag: hurt/comfort OR angst. Doesn't matter, they both get the point across, and people will know that your fic has some drama in it.
Final tag: either Smut OR 18+ OR nsft (the nsfw tag is not available on this hellsite). Let people know that they're gonna bone in this one.
After the first five tags, put whatever else you want in there. #fem reader #bruce Wayne x Reader #horizontal tango #any content warning in your fic here #etc.
You're gonna do just fine, I assure you. Tag appropriately, do it scared, and if all else fails, throw a GIF or little header at the top of the fic to attract attention. That seems to work well for some people.

Starting a blog can feel like a lot, but what makes a blog successful is actually staying true to your words. People can tell when you FEEL what you are saying.
Pick a niche you love & can talk about for days. Within that niche, talk about things you wanted to learn/ needed to hear, because other people might be looking for the same thing. Without a niche, it's very hard to attract the right audience because people wont feel like they can connect.
When I started this blog, It was when I had started a business and I wanted to document my journey and feelings. I am actually insanely vulnerable here with you guys than I am with most my friends IRL hahahha But I am so grateful for putting myself out there because I thinks thats what really helped me connect and find people who "get me" on this platform.
As your blog grows and people interact, you will see what subjects they are most interested in and can format your contact towards that. But most important is to first put A LOT of content out there. Even now, I post 5-10 times a day even though my blog has grown so much by the grace of God.
Pick a blog name thats cohesive with your niche and catchy.
Pick a platform you want to use to post in... Substack, Blogger, Wordpress, Blogspot, tumblr
Pick a theme you like that feels cohesive.
If you aren't using tumblr, you will need to buy a DOMAIN name and a HOSTING plan. I use Godaddy for everything.
You will also need to create key pages: About page, Contact page, Blog page, Privacy Policy
Then once everything is set up, you can start writing :)
If you need writing ideas, search for posts on instagram, x, tiktok, answer the public etc in the niche you are interested in, see whats popular and then write your own thoughts and opinions since you know its a popular subject.
SEO helps people find your blog through Google. To optimize your content, make sure your posts include relevant keywords, meta descriptions and other SEO basics. When you are writing quality content, the SEO will naturally follow tbh.
You can promote your blog on social media platforms, I don't do this.. but it definitely helps drive traffic!
Stay consistent with your posts. Don't put a lot of pressure on yourself, maybe bulk create and schedule them... but being consistent is very important.
In Short.. pick a name for your blog and start writing. If you don't start, you won't know how to optimize & make it better.
You’ve got everything it takes to make your blog a beautiful space for inspiration and connection. Don't overthink it. Take it one step at a time and enjoy the creative process.
