They have been for a little while now. Varian says it wasn’t his fault; Eugene knows that it was. And of course the kid just had to insist on joining him to establish foreign trade routes. Because it’s not like that could make the situation worse or anything. Why not throw some life-threatening espionage into the mix too. Sure. Blood, death, and coercion. What’s not to love? Other notes: super fun and high-stakes mystery with the existing tension only revealed in the penultimate chapter. I would highly recommend decoding the ciphers after each chapter to add to the experience!
