I was talking about this with Elwen, but I have so many thoughts about how Melshi is one of the few characters in the Star Wars universe who, having both a (semi-canonical) first name and a last name, chooses to go exclusively by his last name. When Cassian arrives at Narkina, Jembok introduces everyone at Table 5 by their (presumably) first names except for Melshi. And the first thing Melshi ever says to Cassian is to clarify and assert what name the "new guy" goes by. It's a demonstration of kindness and agency to be sure, giving "Keef" the chance to define how he wants people to call him in a place where he will have no control over anything else. But it also suggests that he actively chooses to go by his surname, both in the restricted environment of the prison and afterwards in the much freer organization of the Rebel Alliance. Even when he's relaxed and off-duty, playing rianza with Cassian and K-2SO, they still call him "Melshi."

It's a small but fascinating character choice, especially considering different social conventions around names in our world. For English-speaking audiences (and Star Wars, for all the inspiration it draws from other cultures, is created for an English-speaking audience first), surnames are often considered more formal and are generally used when there's a level of social distance between the speaker and the person (e.g. between strangers, or people of different social standing). In many other cultures however, especially in East Asian cultures (which the original Star Wars drew a lot of inspiration from), family names often come before personal names when referring to a person. Still yet in other cultures, there is no equivalent concept to surnames, and people derive their names from meaningful things in their lives such as ancestry or personality or environment.

All this to say that it's a unique decision to have Melshi go by his surname even outside of a formal context. There are of course many characters with both a first name and a last name whom we hear primarily referred to by their last name, but it's almost always paired with a context such as military or political rank (e.g. Grand Moff Tarkin, Emperor Palpatine, Admiral Ackbar). Melshi's always Melshi, whether he's in prison or leading a Rebel mission or having a drink with friends.

the london undertale concert was one of the best days of my life and I need to yell about how good it was in excessive detail ❤️

BEFORE THE SHOW:

just getting to see people of all ages in utdr shirts and cosplays everywhere made me so so happy ;_; seeing how many people brought plushies made me wish I'd brought one of mine too aaaa

while queuing and waiting for the doors to open a couple people started playing instruments! sadly I wasn't close enough to hear them too well but I'm pretty sure I heard spider dance and bonetrousle

at one point someone further in the queue held up a plush of the annoying dog sprite and everyone cheered

after we got in I saw a spamton a. spamton cosplayer on the lower audience level. from the upper level their long white nose really stood out in the dark jghdskjf

while the orchestra didn't play any deltarune music, I did hear acid tunnel of love playing before the show! (plus music from minecraft and I think stardew valley?)

they had merch!! not a lot, literally just a bag and a small poster (which unfortunately seems kind of easy to damage 💔) but I was so happy they had anything for the occasion:

ACT 1:

they showed gameplay on the screen above the orchestra, while the lights behind them would change colour to match! purple for the ruins, blue for snowdin etc

I immediately started crying at once upon a time

heartache was so beautiful

the crowd cheered when sans started playing/appeared onscreen

the gameplay skipped around snowdin a lot and at greater dog I think they just straight up played dogsong through the speakers?? dog music too complex to be replicated by human orchestra...

while playing the shop theme the gameplay initially showed QC's snowdin shop, but halfway through changed to show gerson's shop and the crowd cheered specifically for him

we went from snowdin to undyne (the ominous theme) with no papyrus songs. suspicious...

after waterfall they played bird that carries you across a disproportionately small gap and the crowd went wild cheering for the bird not once but Twice, as the gameplay showed it carry frisk back and forth. deserved

the bird was immediately followed by an insane rendition of dummy!! the conductor was practically dancing around, my favourite from act 1 for sure it was SO good

spear of justice was also incredible

another medium!! the 5th anniversary concert (which I also still love forever) didn't include it so I was so glad to hear it here :']

spider dance was amazing

not only was it's raining somewhere else so pretty but some of the crowd were laughing at sans and toriel's jokes onscreen. cute...

I have no idea how I managed to not fully cry at undertale (the song) but I was definitely teary-eyed by the end

act 1 ended with asgore and holy moly the electric guitar went so hard

ACT 2:

beginning with start menu and gradually building up to the full version was so fun!!

they made us wait for papyrus but my god did they deliver. after the much-awaited bonetrousle they played sans' trombone bit, immediately followed by all the date themes and everyone cheered when papyrus' date outfit was onscreen

alphys got some applause too!! (admittedly less but I'm just glad she got some!!!)

mettaton though... biggest applause yet, rainbow lights on the stage to match the gameplay before the quiz, everyone clapping to the beat of it's showtime. incredible

metal crusher and core were amazing but I don't think anything in my life will ever match the experience of hearing the "OHHHH YES" line at a volume so loud you feel it through your feet and the crowd immediately going wild again for mettaton ex's appearance and death by glamour

I don't know how your best nightmare Didn't give me a headache with how fittingly loud it was but the lights going red and the horns as the warning alarms between phases was so cool

fallen down reprise was lovely and the crowd laughing at the dialogue from that scene made my heart feel full

hopes and dreams!! admittedly my one disappointment is that they didn't play the second half and skipped to his theme, which was wonderful too but save the world would've made me sob

also they named the human 'You' and hyperdeath asriel's dialogue onscreen being "I'm so afraid, You..." was probably funny only to me

loved good night playing along with the final scene of toriel bringing frisk a slice of pie

they played song that might play when you fight sans!! never heard an orchestra version of it which was so cool, especially loved the bonetrousle section

obviously they had to end on megalovania and OBVIOUSLY they went as hard as possible with it. incredible rendition that only kept getting better, the conductor literally jumped in the air for the big final beat

I so so desperately hope an official recording of the concert is released on youtube someday. the memory will stick with me forever but I wanna listen to it again and again and for everyone else to be able to hear it too :'] this was literally one of my dreams come true 🌟

thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.

what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).

in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.

best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.

Here's some fun facts about Henry in the Soldered Wires AU (in order of least to most unhinged):

1) Henry and William often spent their free nights at the local disco club. The duo worked listening to the entire discography of ABBA

2) Henry has had a curiousity with how technology works. As a result, if new technology enters the Emily household, there would be a high chance Henry would've disassembled it in an hour (Likely a sign of neurodivergency in his side of the family)

3) As a result, Henry is a savant in repuposing tech to fit his needs (for better or for worse)

4) There is a good reason why Bon's Burgers never made it past the Rocky Mountains.

Also it makes the most sense to me that she calls him "Evancito" simply because she was already calling him "Evan". Because she's an old lady and that's how they are.

Like maybe she asked Buck for his full name, and he gave it to her? And "Evan" never sounded all that wrong coming from Tía Pepa, so he let it slide. She was probably like, "well Eddie and Christopher can call him their boyish nickname, like they are on a sports team, but I'm a lady." Also she probably wields his full name against him every now and then.
