NOIR CITY returns to Chi-town!
Mark your calendars, NOIR CITY returns to Chicago’s Music Box Theatre for its 14th iteration, September 6-12. FNF prez Eddie Muller will be your host opening weekend, September 6-8. FNF board member Alan K. Rode will take the reigns for the remainder of the festival, September 9-12. We hope to see you there!

Me: I do not care about Descendants enough to watch that new movie. I barely cared when I saw the original ones.
Me: *Watches one behind-the-scenes dance rehearsal of Brandy and Paolo*

Me: Ok fine. Fine. I know they have barely any screentime but AH ok. Fine.
#descendants#like legit i KNOW they probably have 10 minutes total of screentime since the movie is about the kids time traveling#but still ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh#also this reminds me of the time i saw Paolo in an off-broadway show (shoutout to Bella: An American Tall Tale)#(very weird show and i was the only person in my musical theatre intensive who enjoyed it)#(look the song The Language of My Nose and Lips and Hair really spoke to me as the only Black girl in that class ok.)#and i remember thinking this man was SO attractive but could not put my finger on why he looked kinda familiar#then at intermission i properly read the playbill and i was like THE PRINCE!?!??!?!?!#since at this point it'd been 20 years since cinderella and the man had not. aged. a. DAY.#oh and a few years prior when Brandy was Roxie in Chicago i went to Stars in the Alley and to this day i'm not sure what came over me#but her coming onstage to sing Roxie made my little tiny child self come to the surface and i SCREAMED in excitement#and my friend was like '...what was that' and i was like '...i have no idea... i didn't realize she'd have this affect on me...'#i really went from 'it's cool she's on broadway. i probably won't see it though.' to ear piercingly high screeching#i think i'm gonna give in and watch this stupid movie. i say 'stupid' affectionately.#because i generally enjoyed the other movies even if they're not my favorite of the DCOMs. but it's really just to see them.

#I DONT THINK I DIDDDDDD like an insane person i left out one of the most bonkers moments of my california vacation#saying it now makes it seem like im making this up and the following story will seem made up but dude just trust me.#im fucking. ok sunday morning the morning of Thee Concert and i (used to waking up at 4-5 am) have been awake on and off since like 6 am#my friend? asleep.#now i enjoy waking up and falling back asleep for a couple of hours however by like 9:30 im starving i need BREAKFAST#like the very nice friend that i am i dont wake my friend up i let him sleep and leave him a message on my open laptop screen#because the fucking hotel room doesnt have a pad of paper?? so i leave my modern post it note of a message#saying that im going out for croissants and coffee#because im an idiot i severely misjudge how hot it's already gotten in los angeles in july#ive chosen to wear jeans (bad idea) and a long sleeve flowy black shirt (worse idea)#i also dont look my Greatest because my friend had been telling me dont wash ur hair before we curl it for the concert!!!#so this is my hair after flying in and everything the day before (It Needs To Be Washed)#im following google maps to the coffee place as i brave the streets of los angeles on a sunday morning#hollywood boulevard around the chinese theatre is insane btw. insane. but being from new york i am unfazed (well. a little fazed)#i am Sweating. its already gotta be 80 degrees. im also reaching critical hunger levels. but i continue on my journey#google maps leads me down a sidestreet and tells me to turn down some alley and im like well thats not right.#so i turn to go back the way i was headed and find another way to get to the coffee place#as i turn and head back up theres a guy going down this same block heading in my direction#i look at him and im like hey that guy kinda looks like oh my god it actually is him. mr john l of tmbg fame#and so i have a split second decision of like do i sayyyyyy something do i just ignore him while geeking out#somehow i decide to be bold and im just like gdjgmm hi excuse me i recognize you uh do you mind if i could get a photo#he was very nice and suggested we move into the shade and i took the photo trying to turn off google maps before i did#and i was like aa im seeing you in concert 2nite love your music thank u! and we went on our way.#i think i kinda like. stopped for a moment before i went on to the cafe and was like. that just happened??????? insane. but it gets better#i do finally get the coffees n croissants btw and get back to the hotel after melting in the heat#and my friend who likes tmbg better was losing his mind once i finally told him#so the following morning after our spars concert insanity we have breakfast at a diner and then head back to our hotel#and he's wearing a tmbg shirt he got and im in a spars shirt and as we're walking back a car horn honks near us#AND ITS BOTH THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS IN A CAR and they say hi and are like we like your shirts!#and my friend and i are like losing it but trying to be cool and like oh thabk you we loved your show hi! so theres my insane story

so i recently started classes at Real College, and idk why i expected it to be like the community college i went to, but they just threw us in the deep end. classes started monday and i've already had a 1 page paper due. but also all of my professors have been like "call me by my first name" which i think is very funny, but also, respectfully, that is scary.
#well okay. 2 of them explicitly said to call them by their first names#the other two introduced themselves by their full names but did not specify if they want to be called professor or not#so i have been calling them professor [last name]#also the department head is a woman#one of my professors is nonbinary and from china#one of my professors is jewish and uses ''partner'' for his s/o#one of my professors is an argentinian woman#and like a solid percentage of my class is trans or gay#and we have a ton of exchange students mostly from japan and nepal#i am absolutely in love with the diversity#esp since the community college i went to was extremely white and cis#i just feel a lot safer at this university#also??? free period products and contraceptives and there's a food pantry on campus for students#a ton of events all the time as well#and theres a bowling alley and a movie theatre on campus??????#this is a state university btw this isn't a private university#it's just extremely wild to me#forgot theres also an islamic center on campus so thats really cool#(our city has a large muslim population though so it kinda makes sense)

NOIR CITY 21
Celebrating its 21st year, NOIR CITY, the largest annual film noir festival in the world, returns to Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre, January 19-28, 2024. FNF president Eddie Muller will present a dozen double bills pairing an English language noir with a similarly themed foreign language film—24 films over 10 days. Whatever the country of origin, there are heists, prison breaks, missing persons, cultural alienation, love triangles, and lots of plain old-fashioned murder.
Muller says this edition "has been tailored to satisfy those folks who love noir filled with the colorful vernacular slang so essential to American and British noir—as well as adventurous viewers intrigued by seeing a familiar story—typically a crime committed for passion or profit—play out in cultures with different values, mores, and styles." Through his programming of NOIR CITY festivals around the nation and his hosting of the popular Noir Alley franchise on Turner Classic Movies, Muller aims to move audiences past the idea that film noir is a strictly American genre.
Joining him this year, as co-programmer and co-host, is acclaimed film scholar Imogen Sara Smith, a familiar commentator on The Criterion Channel streaming service. "Attending NOIR CITY in the Bay Area has been a highlight of my year for over a decade," says Smith, "and I'm thrilled to be joining Eddie as co-host this year. I'm especially excited that the program we've put together will introduce audiences to some rare international titles, alongside Hollywood classics. It's going to be a stellar festival."
Kicking off the collection of rarities is the FNF's most recent restoration — 1952's Argentine film Never Open That Door (No abras nunca esa puerta) — based on two short stories by American master of suspense fiction, Cornell Woolrich. The picture was preserved by the Film Noir Foundation in 2013 and has now been completely restored by the FNF through UCLA Film & Television Archive, thanks in part to a grant from the Golden Globe Foundation (formerly HFPA). Fernando Martín Peña, Argentina's pre-eminent cinephile, will be on hand to introduce the film with Eddie Muller.
Included on the 2024 schedule are English-language rarities such as Black Tuesday (1954), Plunder Road (1957), Across the Bridge (1957), and Strongroom (1962). Little-seen international titles include The Human Beast (France, 1938), Aimless Bullet (South Korea, 1960), Bitter Rice (Italy, 1949), Four Against the World (Mexico, 1950), Zero Focus (Japan, 1961), and Smog (1962), a forgotten surrealist masterpiece by Italian director Franco Rossi freshly restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive. Okay… only one more hour of heavy construction noise right outside my window…
#comin home after the theatre situation and finding a notice in the mail slot that there’s construction from 7-11pm#didnt even register#went straight upstairs and fell asleep#7.15!! and I LEAP out of bed thinking there’s something wrong#(loud noises heavy contruction shouting etc)#and THEN I remember oh yeah. they did say this would be happening#I thought it was a bill so I tossed it aside…#in the home stretch#and because I live down basically an alley the acoustics of the machinery is INSANE#bless em there was literally no good time to do this work but oooh boy#chugging those migraine pills#there’s many pros and a TON of cons to living down an alley#most of them have to do with sound
