Bleddyn Llew Rhodri, life to current day, pt 3

By the time their son was born, there were already rumblings of a coup. Bleddyn and his best student (and fellow royal knight), Laisren, along with the other knights loyal to the young ruler were able to fend them off for almost two whole decades...but over time, as those rallying against the young ruler grew stronger and more organized, the threat eventually became too much.

"I can feel something big on the wind." The young ruler told he and Laisren one day, after pulling the pair aside. "Laisren, I would have you remain here with me. Bleddyn...take Oleander, and bring him to safety outside the Unseelie."

And so he did. Though Oleander protested, wanting to stand alongside his family, he at least understood the severity of the situation enough not to resist Bleddyn overly much. The pair left the Unseelie to meet with a small group of dryad, loyal to the young ruler's cause, just through the Mortal Realm's entrance. And it was there that Bleddyn left him, as he made the return trip to the palace.

...Had he not stopped to assist some of the guards at the city gates, trying to repel a force of coup members, perhaps he would have made it in time to stop those that had slipped into the palace undetected. If he had moved just a bit faster...

When he arrived in the gathering chamber, it was to find Laisren unconscious and mortally wounded just inside the door. The young ruler and his spouse both dead on the floor further in, surrounded by other corpses-- both those of the royal knights, and those loyal to the royal's assassin.

The assassin themselves had faded from view before he could even take a step in their direction. And even if he could have challenged them, he would likely have ended up vastly outnumbered. Instead, he took what bodies he could, to give them a proper return to the earth...including Laisren, whose wounds were ultimately too grave for Bleddyn to heal.

After taking some few days to shake his pursuers (he probably shouldn't have outright declared that he would sooner cleave the new ruler's head from their shoulders when he was given the ultimatum to swear himself to them or die. Probably also shouldn't have then slaughtered as many of his captors as he could before running, as opposed to sneaking away as he could have done far more easily.), he finally managed to make his way back to Oleander...where it was decided that, for the prince's safety, he would assume Laisren's identity.

The pair spent a long while running, after that. Trying to avoid those that intended to capture them and bring them before the new ruler. The time wasn't kind to either of them, and it was only when they were eventually found and taken in by a few members of the Otherworld's Tuatha Dé Danann, that they were finally able to catch their breath.

It's in the Otherworlds that they continue to reside now, acting as knights to the Tuath Dé as a way to repay the kindnesses that they were given in their time of need. Though Bleddyn still views his main purpose in life as guarding "Laisren".

He knows that the once prince intends to face the Unseelie's new ruler one day, in hopes of avenging his parents and the real Laisren. As if he could allow the other to do such a thing. Even if "Laisren" were to succeed, that would only serve to drag him into the same position that ultimately killed his parents. He, who still had so much life to yet live, and so much to accomplish.

In comparison, Bleddyn himself had already lived a full life. He had accomplished and experienced much, and outside of protecting and accompanying Laisren, he felt as though there wasn't much else left for him to do. If it would make Laisren safe, and help him to put the past behind him...

It was easy for Bleddyn to take Laisren's goal as his own. One last thing that he could do to break the cycle, and ensure that Laisren could live the sort of life that he deserved to.

And so, that is currently what he is working toward, along with his daily tasks as a personal knight to the Tuath Dé.

current situation being he was stuck as phantom babysitting his own corpse. because apparently if you summon a Halfa just the wrong way they get split into a full ghost and a zombie which currently was trying to climb a fire escape for some ancients forsaken reason!! why'd they even summon some protector spirit from Illenois? why is it doing a backflip? How does it know how???

what's worse is he's currently in Gotham because Jazz wanted to go to Gotham U and his parents decided it was a good idea to do a family vacation together in the America's most crime ridden city. and he hasn't got a chance to tell them yet about the whole halfa thing and he's not telling them now while HOLY SHIT HOW HE GOT IMPALED he looked away for ONE MOMENT!!

for me, it's all about the facade. he wants everyone to think him an electric guitar, badass, no-bullshit rockstar legend, toppling corporations and shaking the world awake, but he's a cello all along - deeply emotional, ready to die stupidly for someone he loves. it's all in the introduction, Rogue really nails it with "this was never about the corporate colonialism, it's about your groupie output".

there's three instruments for Johnny I'd say - an electric guitar from rebel path, cello from all them sad, deep conversations where he gets to say what he means, and then there's also an acoustic guitar, that temperance ending brings out. if electric guitar is his raging facade, cello is his innermost thoughts and feelings, then acoustic guitar could be him shedding that rockerboy rebel of his, finding his peace. he leaves that electric guitar behind in NC, he's a changed man now, V put his ass back together.

it's also interesting to see how the electric guitar becomes sadder and calmer the farther you go through the game, eventually becoming acoustic. that's Johnny's being changed by V right there

I can't stop thinking about the decision to make Johnny's motif instrument a cello. Not an electric guitar, not drums, or anything related to rock music. A cello.

Deep, haunting, elegant yet mysterious. It's something I'd argue would fit Alt better, and yet, it's associated with Johnny. Why is that?

I would LOVE to pick the brain of Marcin Przybyłowicz for that decision. It's fucking awesome and it's so oddly fitting, but I fear my knowledge regarding music analysis isn't as great as my literary chops. But I think about this choice ALL the time.

lucanis is a 'I could sit in our quiet kitchen on a grey tuesday afternoon drinking coffee and talking with you about nothing much in particular forever and be the happiest man who ever lived' romantic, not a 'classic tropes and grand gestures' romantic. this is a distinction and conceptual gap I personally feel is crucial to understanding what's going on with him when romanced. for all his almost painful sincerity and clear depth of feeling he's not a very effusive guy by nature, but in the history of time no one has ever, with their whole soul, chest and being, been so genuinely and openly happy to just do laundry and taxes with you.

so my younger cousin is flying in to visit from brazil on sunday, and will be staying here for like, the entirety of july. which, don't get me wrong, is super cool! i love the kid! but it felt like a super weird move, considering his parents are the SUPER strict and borderline helicopter parents. even the smallest prank/roughousing with him/his little sister would lead to a strict talking to from his parents, he couldn't ever do anything without their clear permission, that sort of stuff. so letting him fly at alone at 16 to a whole different country and stay there for a whole month seemed WILDLY out of character. additionally, it just felt like a super last-minute trip. it's not like we have any plans to do when he gets here, and the flight itself and stuff only got booked like, midway through june.

and i was talking to my mom about it, kind of trying to nudge some answers out of her, and after a while she went, "yeah, i think they're sending him over here to get away for his boyfriend. see if the distance breaks them off." which, first of all, surprised me because last i checked, they didn't KNOW he had a boyfriend. literally everyone in the family did EXCEPT for them because while that entire side of the family being semi-conservative, his parents (mostly his dad) are EXTREMELY old-fashioned. so clearly something already went wrong. and considering the only reason the rest of the family knew is because one person found out and it spread like wildfire, i have a sneaking suspicion he wasn't the one to tell them, either.

and second of all. they're sending him HERE. to try to make him forget his homosexuality. i couldn't do anything but just wordlessly gesture to the multiple pride flags scattered around my room, then to myself, because really? he has like two other cousins in the us and they're sending him to me? honey i am about to introduce this kid to queer scenes you have never even heard of. he'll be returning home with labels only shrimp can perceive

Great news for uninsured adults in the USA who want a COVID-19 booster! It now appears that ALL CVS locations are now active participants in the Bridge Access Program. The Bridge Access Program gives out free Covid-19 vaccinations to 18+ adults who otherwise can't afford one, so if you have a CVS near you, please go get one! For others who don't have a CVS near them, please go to vaccines.gov, click on "Find Covid-19 vaccines", fill out which vaccines you prefer (you can mix different vaccines if you have to so i reccomend just marking all of them for the age groups you need), and when the next page loads mark the "Bridge Access Program Participant" option to see only locations that are Bridge Access Program participants. Hopefully, other places that aren't CVS will start participating soon, so just check back every so often to see if there are any updates. The CDC Bridge Access Program website also has more details on what locations will be participating, but only CVS is appearing as an active participant on the vaccines.gov location finder at the moment.

I forgot how lonely it is to write original fiction.

Where are the kudos? The subscriptions? The comments? The people cheerleading me chapter to chapter? Where are the kind words and compliments and reassurances that what I'm writing isn't complete crap? Where are the unhinged emojis? The asks on Tumblr? Where are my mutuals in my dms apologizing for not reading the latest chapter right away (side note, you know you don't have to apologize at all, right??). Where is the fanart? Where are the recs?

Where is my motivation to keep going?

It's something I've been thinking about a lot, actually, lately. How the experience of writing fanfic is so unique. How you already have an audience, willing and waiting and captive. And that's really it, isn't it? You have an audience. It's almost performative, writing fanfic. It's being on a stage, a one-person show (or two, if you do it with a friend); it's getting live reactions to your performance, it's feeding off the energy of the crowd and informing it back in a feedback loop; it's improvised, sometimes, in almost-real-time. It's building something that you couldn't have built by yourself. A thing that takes on a life of its own.

It's an experience you can't get writing original fiction, and, honestly, not having it is making it hard to write something original at all.
