Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Part 3. Canaan Valley is the highest mountain valley of its size east of the Mississippi River and hosts the largest wetlands complex in the Central and Southern Appalachians. Most of these wetlands are now protected by Canaan Valley State Resort Park and Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The Freeland Boardwalk Trail in the refuge is an ideal place to get an up-close experience with one of the wetland types - a balsam fir swamp. A half-mile long, raised boardwalk with wildlife viewing platforms winds through the swamp, allowing visitors to interact with the wildlife and plants without damaging the fragile ecosystem.
From top: Bur marigold (Bidens laevis), also known as smooth beggartick, a wetlands-loving beauty that produces a profusion of golden flowerheads; bog goldenrod (Solidago uliginosa), another wetlands native with a bright red stem and closely-packed flowers on a plume-like inflorescence; the bright blue berries of arrowwood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum); the ripening berries of American black elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), also known as American black elder; white meadowsweet (Spiraea alba), a native spirea of Appalachia’s wetlands that draws hordes of pollinators with its beautiful spikes of white flowers; grass-leaved goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia), also known as flat-top goldentop, not a true Solidago, but even more beautiful with its flat panicles of golden-yellow flowers and graceful foliage; and an industrious bumblebee prying open the closed petals of a narrowleaf gentian (Gentiana linearis) to get at the nectar pot below.

Dear friends, Dia de Los Muertos is also happening at this time of year. As readers in Latin America and most of North America well know, Halloween and Dia de los Muertos are not the same holiday. Dia de los Muertos is a holiday that is a synthesis of Indigenous American spirituality and the Catholic faith like many occasions in Latin America. However, there are similarities with the Celtic Samhain where the spirits of the deceased ancestors would revisit the Earth. The occasion is not just November 1st as many people think, it is spread out over several days each with a specific group being honoured. I have noticed that in the UK, imagery from Dia de los Muertos and Halloween has been blended extensively. It is excusable since both occasions have only become popular in the last 20 years in the UK, but it is important to know what you're celebrating. I welcome any comments and questions on the post! Related festivals:
• Sukkot- is a Torah-commanded holiday celebrated for seven days, beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei. It is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals (Hebrew: שלוש רגלים, shalosh regalim) on which those Israelites who could were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. In addition to its harvest roots, the holiday also holds spiritual importance with regard to its abandonment of materialism to focus on nationhood, spirituality, and hospitality, this principle underlying the construction of a temporary, almost nomadic, structure of a sukkah.
• Mid-Autumn festival- also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture. Similar holidays are celebrated by other cultures in East & Southeast Asia. It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year. The history of the Mid-Autumn Festival dates back over 3,000 years. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar lunisolar calendar with a full moon at night, corresponding to mid-September to early October of the Gregorian calendar. On this day, the Chinese believe that the Moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.
• Thanksgiving- This is a secular holiday which is similar to the cell of Mabon; A day to give thanks for the food & blessings of the previous year. The American Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of November while the Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated in October
• Festival of Dionysus- There were several festivals that honored Dionysus, the God of wine. It was a time of fun, games, feasting & drinking wine.
Activities:
•Scatter offerings in a harvested fields, Offer libations to trees
• Decorate your home and/or altar space for fall
• Bake bread
• Perform a ritual to restore balance and harmony to your life
• Cleanse your home of negative energies
• Pick apples
• Have a dinner or feast with your family and/or friends
• Set intentions for the upcoming year
• Purge what is no longer serving you
•Take a walk in the woods
• Enjoy a pumpkin spice latte
• Donate to your local food bank
• Gather dried herbs, plants, seeds & pods
• Learn something new
• Make wine
• Brew an apple cinnamon simmer pot
• Create an outdoor Mabon altar
•Adorn burial sites with leaves, acorns, & pinecones to honor those who have passed over & visit their graves
Many cultures see the second harvest (after the first harvest Lammas) and equinox as a time for giving thanks. This time of year is when farmers know how well their summer crops did, and how well fed their animals have become. This determines whether you and your family would have enough food for the winter. That is why people used to give thanks around this time, thanks for their crops, and animals, and food.
The name Mabon comes from the Welsh God, who was the son of the Earth Mother Goddess. However, there is evidence that the name was adopted in the 1970s, and the holiday was not originally a Celtic celebration.
Some believe Night and day are of equal legth and the God's energy & strength are nearly gone . The Goddess begins to mourn the loss she knows is coming, but knows he will return when he reborn at Yule.

"Hey mate, I'm just popping to the shops, ya need anything?" Your dad asked as Price got out of his car, now parked in your driveway.
Price shook his head, a bag of groceries already tucked beneath his arm. "Nah mate, I'm all good. What are you off to get?"
Your dad sighed, leaning against his car, parked next to Price's.
"She's not feeling well," your dad said, nodding towards the house. "Holed herself in her room, crying and moping about god knows what. So I'm gonna head to the shops and pick her up something sweet."
Price smiled at your dad. "She's lucky to have you, mate."
Your dad smiled back. "Thanks, John. Now, make yourself at home. I'll be twenty minutes. We still have half an hour before kickoff, so I'm hoping to be back in time!"
He hopped into his car as Price waved him off, clambering up the steps and through the front door. He watched from the window as your dads car drove away, dumping his bag of groceries on the kitchen counter. Then, he waited a couple of minutes, hands in his pockets, day-dreaming while looking out the window.
Yeah, who was he trying to fool?
He hurried towards the staircase, bounding up two at a time. He immediately crossed towards your bedroom, and rapped his knuckles gently on the wooden panelling.
"Yeah?" Came your soft voice, and Price felt his heart lurch.
He carefully opened the door and slipped inside.
You were curled up beneath your plush duvet, facing away from the door. The room was dark, asides from the lamp on your bedside table, casting pinkish-gold light into the room. By the door, he could see the shape of you, and saw the way your body trembled and heaved with silent breaths.
"Aw, sweetheart." Price uttered lowly, voice sympathetic as he sunk down beside you.
You dragged yourself around, sitting up and letting the duvet fall, bunched, onto your lap. Your lip jutted in a slight pout, eyes glassy and hair dishevelled.
"Price?" You whispered.
"Come here." Price whispered in return, gathering you into his arms. You sobbed out as he pulled you into his lap so you were straddling him, face buried in his chest as he hugged you tightly to him.
He was warm, smelling of pine and tobacco and fresh linen. A large hand cupped the back of your head, pressing you close, making your ears burn. You sniffled into his chest as he held you, silence blooming through the room.
"I... I didn't know you were coming back today...?" You muttered, pulling yourself away from his chest.
He cupped your face in both hands, taking a moment to stare at your face. Dark eyes flitted across, from your eyes to your lips and back again. His thumb stroked your cheekbone, and you keened into the light touch.
"Your dad not tell you?" Price placed a kiss to your forehead. "Got home this morning. Slept for half the bloody day, and now your dad and I are watching the rugby."
You shook your head tiredly, and Price tutted. He then pressed numerous small kisses across your face, and you closed your eyes at the feeling; basking in the way his lips ghosted across your skin, over your cheeks and cheekbones, across your forehead, down your nose, stopping at your lips.
The kiss there was a bit heavier, and you found yourself whimpering into it, opening your mouth in an attempt to urge him further. But he pulled back, your head still cradled in his hands.
"What's got you so upset, sweetheart?"
"I..." You bit your lip. Frankly, the real reason was slightly embarrassing, and you knew that he'd make some kind of snide joke.
You averted your eyes. "Imissedyou," you rambled, lips barely moving.
"Slow down," Price breathed, laughing slightly.
You sighed, eyes still stinging with tears. "I missed you."
You waited for him to chuckle at you, to poke fun of you for sulking away in your bedroom like a little kid. You expected him to go real dad's best friend and joke about girls and their dramatics, something your dad would laugh at, too.
But, he didn't.
Price simply moved one large hand to the small of your back, pressing you impossibly closer to him, making you straddle him even further. His other hand shifted to your neck— a firm, warm presence— and angled your face to look at his.
"Aw, my poor baby," he muttered, tone dripping with sincerity. "I was only gone for two weeks this time 'round."
You whined, trying to press forward and kiss him, but he kept you in place. "S'just too long," you whined again, hands groping at his chest and arms.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry, sweetheart," He hushed and you gave up your desperate movements— instead opting to slouch further into his hold, something that he appreciated. The hand on the back of your neck moved to massage the base of your skull, then up to skim down your hairline, finally petting your hair towards the crown.
He did this for a long time. He punctuated the silence with soft bouts of praise, often spurred on when you hiccupped or took a shuddering breath, trying to prevent tears from spilling.
"S'alright, my darling, I'm here."
"It's okay, sweetheart, it's okay."
"I've got you, baby."
"Shh, shh, that's enough, pretty girl, no more tears, eh?"
Eventually, Price tuned his ears to the sound of a familiar engine rumbling into the driveway. He sighed, breathing in your comforting scent for just a moment longer, before he delicately placed you back on your bed.
He got to his feet. "You alright now, sweetheart?"
You nodded, feeling all warm inside. "Yeah, I'm alright."
Price nodded, reaching out a hand to cup your jaw, angling your face upwards. He leaned down, slotting his mouth to yours, and he hummed appreciatively when you kissed him back.
"Should probably go help your dad with the groceries," Price mumbled against your lips as you continued to try and kiss him, your hand already brushing his abdomen. "He'd be livid if we missed kickoff."
You grumbled at him, begrudgingly breaking the kiss.
He chuckled, kissing the top of your head before backing out of your room.
"I missed you too." He said, eyes soft and filled with adoration.
Then, he was gone, just as the front door opened and your father's vibrant voice filled the house. You assumed Price made it to the door, as your dad was immediately talking about rugby.
You smiled, insides made of ichor, warm and cozy. Your skin still tingled from where he kissed you, and you flopped backwards, burying your face into your pillow, resisting the urge to scream in delight.
Price was home.

Find the series masterlist
Remember last chapter I warned you reader is bisexual? Yeah. Also due to her work, reader has multiple nicknames, and we see another nickname in this chapter.
This chapter may feel a little slower but we’re building up to good stuff, I promise!
Once again, speaking in italics is speaking in another language.
Warnings: Swearing, mentioned sexual activity, mentioned events from CoD:MW, spy shit.
Word count: 1.8k
Tumblr media
After your business in Turkey was concluded, you hopped on a series of planes to Mexico to go visit another old friend. This one very rarely gave you any kind of intel, but she was fun. So it was worth the trip.
Besides, you were craving good Mexican food.
She even sent a few of her men to pick you up. One took your bags, another held the door open for you into the SUV.
The royal treatment.
The drive was long and quiet. You weren’t overly interested in talking to the underlings, and she had likely warned them to silence anyway. That was one of the reasons you so enjoyed her company. She was smart.
The car stopped, and you waited while one of the men hopped out and got your door for you. “This way,” he murmured in English. Your lips twitched but you followed him sedately.
This time, she’d brought you to a very nice home. Not modest. Three stories, with a good-sized car garage.
This one was new, and idly you wondered when she’d acquired this.
“It took you long enough,” she called in Spanish, walking down the stairs as you entered the house.
“You didn’t invite me for too long,” you shot back, smiling. As always, she was a vision, even dressed simply in a dark top and pants. “Valeria.”
“Marigold.” Valeria stepped down onto the entryway floor, walking up to you. “You changed your hair.”
You smiled. “Every so often,” you agreed. “Can’t let people get too used to one style.”
She chuckled, lifting one hand to trace one finger over the apple of your cheek. “When are you going to come work for me, hm? We both know I can make it worth your while.”
“Not today, Valeria.” This was an old game between the two of you, as old as her rise to power. You may have helped her along some. For the right price. Information helped win wars, after all.
She caught your chin between her thumb and forefinger, holding you steady, searching your gaze. Then she nodded once. “Come. Lunch is ready for us.”
You followed her, unashamedly looking around. “This is a nice place,” you hummed.
“I’m glad you like it, since you’ll be staying here.” She looked over her shoulder at you, amused. “For however long you want.”
“You are a temptress.”
She led you to a table outside, already set for the two of you. This part was easy - you both enjoyed eating and flirting, with nothing of real consequence being said. She always tried to pry just a little more out of you, and you always diverted and redirected. This had been the game for as long as you’d known her.
“I do have work for you, if you’re interested.” Her gaze was heavy-lidded, sweeping over you slowly, warm and familiar.
“Mm?” You leaned back in your chair, folding your hands loosely over your tummy.
“I need to know what the Americans are up to.”
You scoffed a derisive laugh. “The Americans don’t know what the Americans are up to,” you grumbled, waving one hand. “I’ll need something more specific to get you any good intel.”
She leaned forward, hands on the table, chin tipped to hold your gaze. “I need to know how distracted they are.”
You mulled that request over slowly, carefully. You knew her business. She’d known you long enough to give you free reign. Much like Laswell, Valeria knew you gave her solid intel. “Is there a specific department?” you asked cautiously. “Or a specific distraction?”
“I don’t want them to have so much time they begin sniffing around my operations.”
And that, well, that made sense. Didn’t necessarily make things easy, but it made sense. “I’ll need a few days.”
“Standard rules?”
“Of course.”
Valeria smiled. “Well then. Since you’ll be here for a few days…” She stood and took your hand, tugging gently until you stood as well. “I should show you to your room.” Her voice dipped, low and sultry.
“You should,” you agreed, lips curving in an inviting smile.
Valeria tugged your hand, leading you away from the table.
This was one reason why you kept coming back. She just knew how to treat you right.
The fact that she could deliver mind-numbing orgasms was a definite plus, too.
Later, after Valeria left to do some business, you set up your computer. You’d promised to get her some information, after all, and that didn’t just drop into your lap.
Not without some prompting, anyway.
Sources appropriately prompted, you turned instead to the news. It was always good to keep up to date on what was happening - kept you from accidentally wandering into too much trouble. It also gave you time to decide where you wanted to go next, after you got Valeria her information.
The whole world was open to you, after all.
Your research paused for dinner, and then you went right back to it. It had been a while since you’d been to Greenland, and you wouldn’t mind a quieter couple weeks. Then again, Africa had many choices and potential for quiet as well… Decisions, decisions.
You blinked at your phone when it started ringing. Not that many people had your number.
“Yes?”
“Ace.” Laswell sounded stressed. Oh this could not be good. “I need a favor.”
“I don’t do favors,” was your immediate response. Because you didn’t. Mostly.
But Laswell pulled out the big guns. She pulled out your birth name, the one you’d left behind years ago, the one she’d scrubbed from every system.
You went rigid, swallowing hard. “Katie Kate.”
“I need a favor,” she repeated, softer, gentler.
You closed your eyes. Fuck. Fuck! “What do you need?”
“I need you to find someone for me. Cartel.”
“You know I don’t do names.”
“I don’t need a name, I need a location.” She paused and then pulled out her final trump card. “He’s working with Gray.”
You stopped. For a few moments, the world faded to nothing but a pair of gray eyes. Then you swallowed hard. “Should have led with that,” you muttered, hunching your shoulders. “Who am I finding?”
“Carlos Torres.”
“Fine. Am I calling you back with this?”
“No. I’ll have someone meet you.”
“No, not here. I’m not planning to be anywhere helpful to you for at least a week.”
Laswell sighed, short and sharp. “Fine. I’ll provide you with a number for a burner phone, but you won’t get me, so behave yourself.”
“One of these days, you’re going to rack up debt, and I’m going to call it in.”
“Not today.” Laswell hung up.
You let your phone drop to the bed, heart pounding. Twisting, you looked out the window, suddenly feeling exposed and uncertain. Valeria ran a tight ship. She wouldn’t allow unauthorized people here. Not here. It was just your paranoia, you just needed to work it out of your system.
A nice hot shower made you feel more settled in your skin. And screaming into your pillows helped.
Some.
By morning, you were back under control, skipping down the steps to join Valeria for breakfast. You had no idea when she’d gotten back, but she was as immaculately put together as ever, and even greeted you with a kiss to the cheek.
“Sleep well?” Her gaze lingered on your face.
“Oh yes, the bed is quite comfortable.” You smiled, helping yourself to food at her wave. “You really are trying to tempt me into a singular living.” Your grin showed teeth, but it was all in good fun.
“You already know that.” Her smile was a dangerous, glittering thing, a velvet-wrapped dagger. “How long will you be staying?” She switched to Spanish, pouring a drink for you.
You shrugged. “Likely a few more days, at least until I hear back,” you answered in kind.
She nodded once, looking thoughtful. “Do you need to be by your computer all day?”
You blinked, surprised. “No, I’m not expecting anything urgent today. Why?”
“I want to take you riding, see more of the area.”
You waggled your eyebrows playfully. “Riding, huh?” You switched back to English to load more suggestiveness into your tone.
She swatted your arm, light, playful. A teasing reprimand, but still a reprimand. “Well, if you’d prefer to be a brat about it…”
You held your hands up. “I apologize, you know I like to tease. I would love to go with you.”
Her smile had the distinct flavor of a woman who was used to getting her way, and was not surprised when she got it yet again. “After breakfast, then.”
Valeria kept you out all day, showing you around. Showing you off, subtly but definitively. Though she rarely introduced you, no fewer than a dozen of her men saw you with her.
You were a little irked by her gall. A little turned on, too, if you were honest with yourself.
But you still had mixed feelings when you saw that your people had gotten back to you with the information on the Americans. Laswell’s information hadn’t come through yet - if you didn’t hear back in the morning, you’d have to start leaning on people.
Valeria thanked you for the information with a wire transfer and another orgasm. She also somehow got you to promise to stick around for another two days.
You still weren’t sure how she’d gotten you to agree to that.
It took another day before you got a location on Carlos Torres. You waited until Valeria was out of the house again attending to business before you called the number Laswell had sent you.
“You have the information?”
You smiled slowly. “Well, hello again, Captain,” you purred. “What a pleasant surprise!”
He sighed, short and sharp, on the other end. “Do you have the information or not?”
“I do.” You pouted, just a little. “You sure know how to ruin a girl’s fun, Captain.”
The silence on the other end was pointed. Very pointed.
So you gave him the intel, including last known coordinates.
Captain grunted once. Apparently that counted as acknowledgement.
“And, Captain? You should hurry. He won’t stay there long.” You hung up without giving him a chance to reply. Sighing, you rubbed a hand over your face.
Sometimes you wondered if you were getting too comfortable. And sometimes you just wondered about your sanity.

marigolds
Tumblr media
It's October! For half the hemisphere, the nights are getting longer, the wind is getting colder and the weather is taking on a distinct grey and overcast mood. What better time than now to steal a few last bursts of brilliant, warm sunshine and keep them close against the coming of winter?
Enter October's flower (one of them) - the marigold.
An interesting thing I found while researching this month's flower was that its native to the Americas - and yet some sites list the ancient Greeks and Romans having traditions surrounding the marigold. One of the sites even mentions the flower being introduced to the 'Americas' several sentences after telling me its native to Mexico. I think some of the confusion may come from the fact that there are marigolds of the Tagetes genus, which are the ones I think of when I think of marigolds, that were first mentioned by the Aztecs and are native to the Americas - and there is a flower, Calendula officinalis, called the 'pot marigold' which comes from the same daisy family but is a different genus and seems to originate in southern Europe. To add to the confusion, the Spanish imported the Tagetes marigold from the Americas and from Spain it spread to, particularly, monastery gardens across Europe where it was cultivated into various strains with names like the African or French marigold. The American marigold didn't even have an official genus name until 1753. So, sorting through marigold myths was a lot like playing 'guess which twin it is' for me especially since the majority of the sites I was wandering through either weren't aware of a difference or didn't differentiate. I found one site that marked the difference between them (shout out to growingvale.com). I can understand why. We're only talking flower folklore here, not nuclear codes. My little nitpicky soul though just wasn't happy until it figured out what was going on. I am now going to spew facts at you and try to tell you which flower is which for each of them.
We'll see how I do.
Let's start at the beginning.
Tagetes marigolds were first recorded as being cultivated by the Aztecs, who considered them both medicinal and sacred. That tradition has carried over into Mexico's el Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated either in late October or Early November depending on the region. How much of that is straight from the Aztecs and how much is later European influence via Catholicism is still up for debate but the marigold plays a special part in both. The brightness and strong scent of the marigold flowers are believed to help guide the spirits of the dead to their family and to the offerings left out for them. You watched Disney's Coco (or Fox's The Book of Life), you get it. The Day of the Dead is celebrated outside of Mexico as well, with traditions varying from place to place but right now, we're talking marigolds.
In a half step to the side of that, the Victorians also considered marigolds a funeral flower but in a solemn and grief-filled way that made their cheery color inappropriate for any other kind of bouquet.
In South Asia, the Tagetes marigold has in large part replaced Calendula officinalis marigold while still serving the same purpose. There marigolds are used to create garlands and decorations for weddings, festivals and sacred holidays. Both Buddhism and Hinduism attach spiritual significance to the flowers. In India, giving a garland of marigolds to someone is considered a sign of friendship.
Walking it back to our Calendula officinalis marigold, the common name of 'marigold' is actually a break down of 'Mary's gold'. The golden colored plant was often left on alters and shrines to the Virgin Mary in Catholic countries in the middle ages by people that couldn't afford to leave actual coins. Its bright sunshine color and availability to everyone soon became associated with her.
This is the marigold that the ancient Romans and Greeks used medicinally and that medieval Europe thought was a cure against the plague. This is also the marigold that was woven into garlands for doors and livestock in Ireland to keep away fairy attention.
Both branches of flowers are popular with love superstitions, representing never having to lose a love and as a good luck charm when it comes to love.
And let's round things off with a gardening fact. Marigold are considered excellent companion plants for most vegetable gardens because they repel pests from the big to the very tiny kind. Just check before you plant. Their roots also give off an antibacterial chemical that will wreck havoc on your legumes.
Happy birthday, October babies!

Parents Day
Masterlist
Paring: Xavier Thorpe x Mexican!Reader
Summary: it’s parent’s day and Xavier is finally going to meet his girlfriend’s parents.
Warnings: Spanish with translation. Boyfriend!Xavier, involved parents, probably many spelling mistakes
A/N: Since I don’t know much folklore or mythical creatures from different Latin American countries, I made the reader to be a catrina like La Muerte from Book of Life because it revolves around Mexican culture and that’s the culture I know the most. If you haven’t seen The Book of Life, La Muerte is made entirely of white sugar candy with knee-length black licorice hair that is tied in a low ponytail and multi-colored glowing eyes with aqua eyeshadow that are in shades of gold and red. Though a catrina itself is just a skeleton, La Muerte is different. La Muerte has magic to transform herself into a human, has telekinesis, can revive anything including nature, controls and generates fire, and in her catrina form, she leaves trail of marigold petals and levitates herself. So to avoid any confusion in Nevermore, Y/N is usually in the human form that she has created for herself. When her parents come in for parents day, they are in their catrina form. Xavier knows Y/N is a catrina but he has NEVER seen her in her catrina form. Understand? Cool.
Tumblr media
This is how La Muerte looks, Y/N’s catrina form is basically like that but smaller since Y/N is younger. Y/N’s mom is basically La Muerte in her Catrina form
Y/N was hanging in Xavier’s art shed, just watching him paint.
“Are you excited for parents day tomorrow?” Xavier asked Y/N as she plays with the marigold plant she gave Xavier last week. “Kinda, why?” Y/N asked. “So I can finally meet your parents. You barely talk about them. Like I know you talk to them on the phone a lot but you never talk to me about them.” Xavier said as he got closer to Y/N. “There’s not much to tell, we’re a very Mexican family.” Y/N commented, waving her hand over the marigold so more flowers can sprout.
“Well I cant wait to meet them. I’ve even been practicing my Spanish.” Xavier said, sitting next to Y/N. “That’s good that you’ve been practicing.” Y/N commented. “I do have a question though, how come I’ve never seen you in your Catrina form?” Xavier asked. Y/N was shocked at the question, for the years you guys have been friends, months of dating, he has never asked this before. “I’ve been reading up on Catrinas so I don’t say anything stupid in front of your parents, right? In this book of Mexican Folklore, it says that a Catrina is made up of white sugar, candy, has black licorice for hair, their eyes are glowing candles, their faces are decorated, their clothes are made up of candy too. Catrinas are literally made up of sugar, slice, and everything nice! But they have the ability to take on different human forms. I’ve always seen you in your human for, how come I’ve never seen you in Catrina form?”
For Y/N it was a sensitive topic. Not that she didn’t like her Catrina form, she LOVED it, it was very beautiful, reminds her of when she would visit Mexico and see all her relatives. However, being the only Catrina in Nevermore, Y/N became self conscious.
“I’m not entirely comfortable with being in my Catrina form in front of people that are not my family.” Y/N said, when Xavier was about to say something, Y/N’s phone rang, a Luis Miguel song playing, Y/N got off the seat and walked towards his paintings. “My mom, LOVES him, bueno? (Hello)” Y/N answered the phone.
“Hola mi amor! Como has estado? Mañana es el Parents Day de tu escuela así que tu padre y yo vamos a estar contigo todo el día, llevaremos a tu hermano, me encantaría conocer a todos tus amigos. (Hello my love. How have you been? Tomorrow is Parents Day at your school so your dad and I will be with you the entire day, we’ll bring your brother with us too, I would love to meet all of your friends)” her mom said.
“Sí, claro mami. Van a estar con su forme humano o Catrina? (Yeah, of course. Are you guys gonna be in human form or Catrina form?)” Y/N asked. “Forme humano para no llamar mucho la atención. Pero eso sí, cuando ya me cansé, me vuelvo catrina, no entiendo como puedes mantenerte en forme humano todo el tiempo, aveces cansa (Human for to lay low. But once I’m tired, I’m going back to my Catrina form, I don’t get how you can stay in your human form all the time, it’s exhausting)” her mom commented. “Si lo sé, te hablo luego, adios (Yeah, I know, I’ll talk to you after, bye)” Y/N hung up the phone, Xavier just stared at her. “What?”
“I just love hearing you speak Spanish.” Xavier said with a loving smile. “Maybe you could teach me Spanish!” Xavier said, Y/N just laughed in disbelief, “Last time I tried teaching you Spanish, you didn’t pay attention like at all, so no. Stick to duolingo, guapo.” Y/N commented. “I know that word! It means handsome, right?” Xavier asked Y/N as he got up to stand in front of her, his hands on her hips. “Yes it does, good job.” Y/N said, Xavier leaned down and kissed her. They continued kissing until they ran out pf breath. “If we keeping kissing like that, I won’t be able to stop.” Xavier said, leaning his forehead against hers. “I’m going back to my dorm, don’t stay here too late.” Y/N said, giving Xavier one final kiss before leaving his art shed. As Y/N was walking back to Ophelia Hall, she was making figures with her fire powers, so much fun. She saw Yoko and Enid talking.
“Finally you’re here! We’re having a sleepover in the dorm, Divina and Wednesday are coming too.” Yoko told Y/N. “Are you sure Wednesday is the sleepover type?” Y/N asked, looking at Enid. “Maybe she’ll surprise you. I can’t wait to meet your parents tomorrow! What are they like? Are they really made out of candy? Are they coming in their Catrina form? I was asking Wednesday about Catrinas because Xavier has the book.” Enid said and Y/N was shocked. “Why do you want to learn about Catrinas?”
“Because you are one! No one is teaching us about different creatures and outcasts from around the world so I gotta learn.” Enid said. They entered Yoko and Y/N’s dorm and waited for Divina and Wednesday for the sleepover. “How is your mom dealing with the whole ‘not being able to wolf out’ thing?” Yoko asked Enid as Enid was painting Y/N’s nails a pastel blue color. “She’s not handling it well, I swear, we she comes for Parents Day, it’s going to be awful. I’m better off meeting Ajax’s parents, that doesn’t sound too bad, actually.” Enid said, a few minutes later Divina and Wednesday showed up. “Girls, you’re just in time, sit on the floor, let’s get started.” Yoko said.
Meanwhile Xavier and Ajax were playing video games. “Dude, I just don’t know what to say to her parents. What if they don’t speak English?” Xavier said. “There’s a reason why you’ve been learning Spanish. Just relax, her parents can’t be different from Y/N, you’ve been learning about Catrinas, why are so nervous about meeting them tomorrow?” Ajax asked, they have been having this same conversation for a week.
“I don’t know, i just want to make a good first impression.” Xavier said. “I’m sure you will. Now one last round before you go back to your dorm.” Ajax said.
The next day was Parents Day, Principal Weems finished her announcement. Enid was sitting with her parents, Wednesday was with her parents and Pugsley, Xavier and Y/N were sitting together at a table, talking to Ajax.
“There is no way you stoned yourself. I thought there were some showers without the mirrors.” Y/N said as she laughed after hearing Ajax’s story about why he couldn’t make his date with Enid. “There are! Those were taken though, such a horrible experience, even if it does last a couple of hours.” Ajax said. “My folks are here, I’ll talk to you guys later.” Ajax said, hugging both Y/N and Xavier. When Y/N and Xavier were talking, Y/N saw her parents walks in…they were in Catrina form. “Ay, no manches (no way)” Y/N said looking at her mom, she walked towards her parents.
“Hola hoja, como has estado? (Hi, how have you been?)” Y/N’s dad asked her, hugging her. “Pensé que iban a estar en forme humano, qué pasó? (I though you guys were gonna be in human form, what happened)” Y/N asked her dad, getting out of his hug. “Dante quería estar en su forme alebrije, por lo menos tu hermano está en forme humano (Dante wanted to be in his alebrije form, at least your brother is in human form)” Y/N’s mom said. “You couldn’t give me a warning?” Y/N asked her brother. “I would have but mom took away my phone.” Y/N’s brother said, she was gonna keep talking to him until she felt Xavier come up from behind her and hugged her.
“Are these your parents, babe?” Xavier asked. “Obviously, mami, papi, él es Xavier, mi novio. (Mom, dad, he is Xavier my boyfriend.)” Y/N said. “Mucho gusto conocerlos, señor y señora, mi español no es muy bueno pero estoy tratando lo mejor que puedo (nice you meet you, my Spanish isn’t really good but I’m doing the best I can)” Xavier said and Y/N looked proud, she kissed his cheek.
“Well, Xavier, it is nice to meet you too. Where are your parents?” You mom asked in English but with an accent. “My dad couldn’t make it.” Xavier said. “Oh that’s fine son, just spend the day with us, it will be fun, we brought tacos.” Y/N’s dad said. Xavier smiled, “I would love that, thank you.”
They went to the park/picnic area of the school so they could eat. “Here you go, honey, you should add the salsa to your taco, it tastes so good.” Y/N’s mom said. “Sure, thank you, is it spicy?” Xavier asked. “No, not really.” The whole family replied, Xavier added the salsa to his taco and took a big bite, a few seconds later, his eyes were watering and drank about half his bottle of water. “That’s really spicy, what the heck.” Xavier said.
“Rule number one; of a Mexican says something isn’t spicy, it is. If they say it’s a little spicy, it’s very spicy. If they says it’s very spicy, don’t eat it. Now you’re all caught up.” Y/N said as she finished her taco. The day continued that way until everyone’s parents had to leave, they said their goodbyes and now Xavier and Y/N were in his shed.
“I wanted to show you something. But first close your eyes.” Y/N said. Xavier did what she asked. “Okay, now open them.” Xavier opened his eyes and low and behold, Y/N was in her Catrina form. She looks very similar to her mom, except instead of having a big hat with candles and skulls, Y/N had a flower crown made out of marigolds, with 3 small skulls, and 2 small candles. Her dress was made up of cherry fruit roll ups, decorated with marigolds, the hem of the dress was lined with candles as well but the dress went up to their knee.
“What do you think?” Y/N said, she was floating, gauging Xavier’s reaction. “You look absolutely beautiful. Can I paint you like this?” Xavier asked. “Sure.” Y/N “flew” to the stool that Xavier longed her to, leaving a trail of marigold petals and she sat on the stool. “Is this pose fine, Xavi?” Y/N asked. “Yeah, babe, you’re good.” After about 2 hours of painting, Xavier was finished. Xavier showed Y/N the painting and when she saw it, she was so happy, his painting was amazing. He moved his hand in front of the painting to make it move and the Catrina in the portrait began dancing and twirling around. Y/N went back to her human form.
“Xavier, I love it, it turned out so beautiful.” Y/N hugged Xavier and Xavier kissed her forehead. “Of course, this is probably one of my favorite paintings yet. You, my love, are a walking work of art.” Xavier said and kissed Y/N. “You’re so sweet. Let’s go to your dorm though, maybe I can thank you a little more intimately.” Y/N said as they walked out of his shed.
Hope you guys like it, if you know of any other “mythical creatures” native of Latin American countries, it would awesome if you let me know. If not, every Hispanic outcast reader will be a Catrina or a Nagual.

the playlist roughly follows an interpretation of their relationship from focalors/furina asking neuvillette to be iudex as part of the plot to make him love humans, the beginning of a romantic relationship during their co-reign of fontaine, the trial and focalors death, furina leaving, and then reuniting 💕
i’d also like to give credit to whoever it was who suggested evermore as a neuvifuri song, but i believe the post was deleted :(
