skgkxlkslf im actually on the train now but that just means i have 7 more hours to kill so yes! thank you!
(im gonna have to divide this up into categories and ill give you my top 5 for each because im an indecisive bitch)
fav classic novels: women in love by d. h. lawrence, the waves & mrs dalloway by virginia woolf, a portrait of the artist as a young man by joyce, moby-dick (duh!)

fav classic novels that were written in 1913/14 but not published until 1971 thus making you reconsider the categories you take for granted before even having read a single word: maurice by e. m. forster
fav contemporary novels: a little life by hanya yanagihara (this is not a recommendation actually if you want to read this book find a therapist first, then put it in a box labeled 'uncle jimmy's failed tie-dye projects' and forget about it forever), call me by your name by andré aciman, earthlings by sayaka murata, milkman by anna burns, my tender matador by pedro lemebel
fav recent novels: assembly by natasha brown (you could also call this a novella tbh i think it's less than a hundred pages), swimming in the dark by tomasz jedrowski, the life of the mind by christine smallwood, jonathan abernathy you are kind by molly mcghee, the book of goose by yiyun li
fav short stories/short story collections: mothers and sons by colm toíbín, dubliners by james joyce, the garden party by katherine mansfield, odour of chrysanthemums by d. h. lawrence, life ceremony by sayaka murata
fav nonfiction: sea and sardinia by d. h. lawrence, the lonely city by olivia laing, fearing the black body by sabrina strings, a field guide to getting lost by rebecca solnit, shrill by lindy west
honorable mentions: the color purple by alice walker, through a glass darkly by jostein gaarder, disorientation by elaine hsieh chou, medallions by zofia nalkowska, what we dont talk about when we talk about fat by aubrey gordon

Names (Same First Name and Team-Mate) (22-08-2007)
Context: My last post was weighty and serious. This one was not. Someone asked in a forum (I think it was the F1 Rejects forum, but sadly it no longer exists to check) if anyone had been in the same team as someone with the same first name. It turns out that not only did this happen, but 8 different names and 17 drivers have experienced this situation in the 74 years F1 has been a championship. F1 Reject status was accorded by the F1 Rejects website to any racing driver who had competed in F1 without scoring at least 3 points on the 1960-2003 systems. In other words, F1 drivers who had never scored 4th place (or higher), and either scored a single 5th place but never 6th, or scored two sixth places but never anything higher. The site did profiles of such drivers' careers and considered giving them credit for their achievements to be part of its purpose. Drivers on today's grid who qualify for F1 Reject status as of the eve of the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix (if any of them finishes in the top 4, or Yuki finishes 5th, please feel free to laugh at my presumption): - Logan Sargeant (highest position in F1 - 10th) - Zhou Guanyu (highest position in F1 - 8th) - Oliver Bearman (highest position in F1 - 7th) - Yuki Tsunoda (highest position in F1 - 1 x 6th place) We may have to wait a while for the first F1 team with two Alianoras, or even one :D
André *492 Milhoux, André 1 1956 *561 Pilette, André 14 1951, 1953 - 1954, 1956, 1961, 1963 - 1964
Andrés Milhoux (Bressoux, Belgium) and Pilette (Paris, France) shared a Gordini T32 at the 1956 German GP. They qualified in 21st position, but retired from the race. It was André Milhoux's only race, thereby qualifying him for F1 Reject status. André Pillete was somewhat more successful, competing in 14 races between 1951 and 1954. He secured a 5th place and three 6th places. That said, he did also fail to qualify four times, so he had his ups and downs as well.
David *509 Murray, David 5 1950 - 1952 *327 Hampshire, David 2 1950
Davids Hampshire (Mickleover, England - 27 miles from my house!) and Murray (British) were team-mates at Scuderia Ambrosiana for one race at the British GP in 1950. David Hampshire was 9th, 6 laps behind the winner (he qualified 16th). David Murray had an engine failure on lap 44 after qualifying 18th. David Hampshire only did one other race, which ended in a DNF. David Murray had a five-race career where he finished precisely 0 races. Both are eligible for F1 Reject status.
Jack *97 Brabham, Jack 128 1955 - 1970 *235 Fairman, Jack 13 1953, 1955 - 1961
Jacks Brabham (Hurstville, Australia) and Fairman (Surrey, Britain) were team-mates at the 1958 Moroccan GP. Jack Brabham became the first person to get two 19th qualifying places in a season, and then trailed to 11th at the finish. Jack Fairman came 11th in qualifying and 8th in the race. Neither is eligible for F1 Reject status.
Jo *87 Bonnier, Jo 108 1956 - 1971 *669 Siffert, Jo 100 1962 - 1971
Jos Bonnier (Djurgеrden, Sweden) and Siffert (Fribourg, Switzerland) did 12 races together in 1964 and 1965 for the RRC Walker Racing Team. Neither are candidates for F1 Rejectdom.
Ken *211 Downing, Ken 2 1952 *477 McAlpine, Ken 7 1952 - 1953, 1955
Kens Downing (Chesterton, England) and McAlpine (Cobham, England) were in the Connaught team for the 1952 British GP. Ken Downing qualified in 5th, McAlpine in a more modest 17th. Ken Downing then fell down the order to finish 9th. That said, Ken McAlpine finished 16th, 6 laps behind the winner and 3 laps behind his namesake team-mate. Astonishingly, Downing only got one more race (from which he retired), yet McAlpine had a seven-race career. Both qualify for F1 Reject status.
Louis *148 Chiron, Louis 19 1950 - 1951, 1953, 1955 - 1956, 1958 *617 Rosier, Louis 38 1950 - 1956
Louis Chiron (Monte Carlo, Monaco) and Rosier (Chapdes-Beaufort, France) did six races as team-mates at Talbot in 1951. Neither qualify for F1 Reject status.
Luigi *510 Musso, Luigi 25 1953 - 1958 *746 Villoresi, Luigi 33 1950 - 1956
Luigis Musso (Rome, Italy) and Villoresi (Milan, Italy) were team-mates for one race in the 1954 Italian GP for Maserati. Luigi Villoresi celebrated his 25th race entry by qualifying 6th - Musso was back in 14th. Neither finished the race. Neither qualify for F1 Reject status.
*563 Piotti, Luigi 9 1955 - 1958
Luigi Villoresi then went on to share a car with Luigi Piotti (Milan, Italy) in the 1956 German GP (this was the same race as the two Andrés shared a car). This race ended in engine failure. Luigi Piotti is eligible for F1 Reject status. This is the only race where two drivers from the same city and the same first name shared a car.
Stefan *60 Bellof, Stefan 22 1984 - 1985 *376 Johansson, Stefan 103 1980, 1983 - 1991
Stefans Johansson (Vaxjo, Sweden) and Bellof (Giessen, Germany) were team-mates at Tyrrell for three races in 1984 (the British, German and Austrian GPs). Neither could be classified as F1 Rejects.

Afro-Surrealism & Afrofuturism: Mood Board
Afro-Surrealism
Behold the invisible! You shall see unknown wonders!
1. We have seen these unknown worlds emerging in the works of Wifredo Lam, whose Afro-Cuban origins inspire works that speak of old gods with new faces, and in the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who gives us new gods with old faces. We have heard this world in the ebo-horn of Roscoe Mitchell and the lyrics of DOOM. We've read it through the words of Henry Dumas, Victor Lavalle, and Darius James. This emerging mosaic of radical influence ranges from Frantz Fanon to Jean Genet. Supernatural undertones of Reed and Zora Neale Hurston mix with the hardscrabble stylings of Chester Himes and William S. Burroughs.
2. Afro-Surreal presupposes that beyond this visible world, there is an invisible world striving to manifest, and it is our job to uncover it. Like the African Surrealists, Afro-Surrealists recognize that nature (including human nature) generates more surreal experiences than any other process could hope to produce.
3. Afro-Surrealists restore the cult of the past. We revisit old ways with new eyes. We appropriate 19th century slavery symbols like Kara Walker, and 18th century colonial ones like Yinka Shonibare. We re-introduce "madness" as visitations from the gods, and acknowledge the possibility of magic. We take up the obsessions of the ancients and kindle the dis-ease, clearing the murk of the collective unconsciousness as it manifests in these dreams called culture.
4. Afro-Surrealists use excess as the only legitimate means of subversion, and hybridization as a form of disobedience. The collages of Romare Bearden and Wangechi Mutu, the prose of Reed, and the music of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Antipop Consortium express this overflow.
Afro-Surrealists distort reality for emotional impact. 50 Cent and his cold monotone and Walter Benjamin and his chilly shock tactics can kiss our ass. Enough! We want to feel something! We want to weep on record.
5. Afro-Surrealists strive for rococo: the beautiful, the sensuous, and the whimsical. We turn to Sun Ra, Toni Morrison, and Ghostface Killa. We look to Kehinde Wiley, whose observation about the black male body applies to all art and culture: "There is no objective image. And there is no way to objectively view the image itself."
6. The Afro-Surrealist life is fluid, filled with aliases and census- defying classifications. It has no address or phone number, no single discipline or calling. Afro-Surrealists are highly-paid short-term commodities (as opposed to poorly-paid long term ones, a.k.a. slaves).
Afro-Surrealists are ambiguous. "Am I black or white? Am I straight, or gay? Controversy!"
Afro-Surrealism rejects the quiet servitude that characterizes existing roles for African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, women and queer folk. Only through the mixing, melding, and cross-conversion of these supposed classifications can there be hope for liberation. Afro-Surrealism is intersexed, Afro-Asiatic, Afro-Cuban, mystic, silly, and profound.
7. The Afro-Surrealist wears a mask while reading Leopold Senghor.
8. Ambiguous as Prince, black as Fanon, literary as Reed, dandy as André Leon Tally, the Afro-Surrealist seeks definition in the absurdity of a "post-racial" world.
9. In fashion (John Galliano; Yohji Yamamoto) and the theater (Suzan Lori-Parks), Afro-Surreal excavates the remnants of this post-apocalypse with dandified flair, a smooth tongue and a heartless heart.
10. Afro-Surrealists create sensuous gods to hunt down beautiful collapsed icons.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
Tumblr media
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is an odd adaptation. Technically, it’s based on several of the short stories written by Alvin Schwartz. Ask anyone who's read the book, however, and they'll tell you what makes it worth your time are the illustrations by Stephen Gammell. Without them, these stories are perfectly fine around the campfire but worth turning into a full-length picture? probably not. As such, the 2019 adaptation integrates the tales in a larger narrative that connects the stories while capturing the FEEL of the book. At this, it succeeds. I foresee this one becoming a Halloween staple for older children who like to be scared.
On Halloween night, 1968, best friends Stella (Zoe Colletti), Auggie (Gabriel Rush) and Chuck (Austin Zajur) prank school bully Tommy Milner (Austin Abrams) and barely evade his retribution thanks to Ramón (Michael Garza). They continue the night’s festivities by exploring the home of the long-deceased Sarah Bellows. Urban legends say she told scary stories to children before poisoning them. When Stella discovers Bellows’ book, she's horrified when she reads their names within her stories.
Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts or takes cues from The Big Toe, Me Tie Dough-ty Walker!, “Harold, The Dream, The Haunted House and the illustrations that accompany them (or in some cases, memorable drawings from other stories in the book). The nightmarish charcoal and ink illustrations by Stephen Gammell have been successfully adapted to the screen, which makes the film reasonably frightening. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is aimed at a specific audience. Young children, even those who might be brave enough to watch Goosebumps will be terrified. Instead, it’s more for the 12+ crowd and their parents. That’s terrific. There is no shortage of spooky-themed movies for the little ones. Adults have a plethora of titles to choose from. What about the teens and pre-teens who aren’t quite ready to watch something PG-13 on their own? They haven’t had a lot to choose from, which I think destines this film to be a recurring watch around the end of October.
Also helping this movie are three things: the suspense, likable characters and real scares. These three are all tied together. You sweat and want to hide under the covers because you care about the group of friends. Not about the despicable Tommy Milner but his fate is so strange and unsettling it’s hard to shake so it works anyway. So many horror movies pretend to be for adults but treat the audience like little kids. They make the characters unlikeable or have them do something “wrong” so the audience doesn’t have to feel bad when something horrible happens to them. When Stella, Ramón, Auggie, Chuck or his sister, Ruth (Natalie Ganzhorn) see their names appear in Sarah Bellows’ book, you’re worried. You hope they can find a way to avoid the fate that awaits them, which makes the mystery of the book’s owner that much more interesting.
Like its source material, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark isn’t breaking any new ground, which is why I’m firmly advertising it to the older kids and their parents. If you’ve seen your fair share of horror, you’ll recognize these tales for what they are: well-directed, well-made campfire stories. They effortlessly move from the realm of silly to scary. The cool monsters that populate them add a little something special to the mix but ultimately, it’s a lot of tried-and-true elements we’ve seen before. That's not a flaw, not for the audience this film is aimed towards. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a gateway to true horror that touches on a couple of young adult themes and has one foot planted in juvenile fiction. It’s a transitionary film but I suspect that those who grow up with it will find that it ages surprisingly well, particularly if we get the sequel it promises right before the credits. Manchester City: 2022-23 UEFA Champions League Winners
Tumblr media
Match in brief: City claim European glory City navigated an unbeaten path to the final, racking up a competition-best 31 goals in the process, so it was little surprise that they started on the front foot. Inter had let in only one goal in six knockout games, however, and for so long did an excellent job of marshalling their opponents' galaxy of attacking talent.
Erling Haaland – subsequently flagged offside – and Bernardo Silva did both go close in the opening stages, but it was not until the 27th minute that Kevin De Bruyne unpicked the Nerazzurri lock and Haaland got off a firm shot at goal; André Onana, as usual, was positioned well.
De Bruyne is so often City's creator-in-chief, but the man with 31 assists this season came off injured before half-time; Josep Guardiola's team would have to think again.
Their faith was tested once more before the hour, Manuel Akanji misjudging a Bernardo Silva pass to allow Lautaro Martínez to pounce. On this occasion, Ederson was alert enough to close down the angle.
Onana had no such luxury at the other end when a neat City move resulted in the ball dropping to Rodri just inside the penalty area; City's midfield pivot showed characteristic calm to side-foot into the corner. The treble was on.
Inter were far from deflated by going behind, though, and, just three minutes later, so nearly drew level, only for Federico Dimarco's looping header to strike the crossbar.
De Bruyne's replacement, Phil Foden, soon went close at the other end, but there was still time for one last nerve-jangler for Guardiola and his charges. Romelu Lukaku's close-ranger header somehow ricocheted off Ederson's knee and the engraver could finish adding City's name to the trophy for the first time.
PlayStation® Player of the Match: Rodri (Man City) "Came up with the winning goal in a game with few chances and his involvement for City between the boxes was essential to having a balanced City side." UEFA Technical Observer Panel
Matthew Howarth, Man City reporter
It was perhaps not the prettiest performance from Guardiola's star-studded ensemble, but this was never likely to be one-sided affair – Inter are far too good for that. The Serie A side were excellent in the first half but, when City were struggling to get into gear early in the second, they failed to take advantage. Rodri's goal cements his place in club history on the back of a tremendous personal campaign, while Guardiola becomes the first coach since Sir Alex Ferguson to lead an English club to the treble.
Vieri Capretta, Inter reporter
An almost perfect first half for the Nerazzurri – solid at the back and showing glimpses of what they could do going forward. In the second half Inter did what they had to do, kept the game under control, had two enormous chances, but ultimately came up short. Simone Inzaghi and his players shouldn't have regrets – with a bit of luck this could have gone their way.
Key stats City are the 23rd different team – and the sixth from England – to win the European Cup. Josep Guardiola is just the fourth coach to win the European Cup on three occasions. City are only the tenth team in history to complete a treble of league, cup and European Cup. Haaland finished as the competition's leading scorer with 12 goals. City are the 15th European Cup winners to remain unbeaten throughout their campaign (W8 D5). This was the fourth successive UEFA Champions League final to finish 1-0. Fantasy star performers To follow.
Line-ups Man City: Ederson; Akanji, Rúben Dias, Aké; Stones (Walker 82), Rodri; Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne (Foden 36), Gündoğan, Grealish; Haaland
Inter: Onana; Darmian (D'Ambrosio 84), Acerbi, Bastoni (Gosens 76); Dumfries (Bellanova 76), Barella, Brozović, Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Mkhitaryan 84), Dimarco; Martínez, Džeko (Lukaku 57)
What's next?
The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League begins with the preliminary round semi-finals on 27 June; the draw takes place on Tuesday 13 June. Both City and Inter will enter next season's competition in the group stage, the draw for which takes place on Thursday 31 August.
