#Andrey x gonch

I can’t stop thinking about Katya and Andrey but y’all I never really shipped them, mostly just FELT for them. I mean, this exchange???:
“Maybe if we were one person, you and I, we would be enough for the world.”
“You mean for him.”
“Is there really a difference?”
“For us? …I guess not.”
I mean…!!!

Say what you will about Martin Scorsese and Matteo JWHJ 0715 but it was incredibly progressive of them to show not one(1) but two(2) gay kisses onscreen in Goncharov, a film that came out in the 70s. Even more impressive that nobody seemed to have anything to say about it until now, almost 50 years after it was in theatres.

Did time mean nothing, or did time mean everything? After rewatching the cult classic Goncharov (1973) dir. Martin Scorsese, all I could think of was the other queer cult classic from the 70s. That’s when I blacked out and my hubris took over and now this exists. (link to redbubble shop here)

guys my film history teacher absolutely loves Scorsese but I don't think she uses social media that often so should I blatantly lie to her about goncharov so she would go insane

My live thoughts while watching Goncharov (1973) for the first time. Please ignore all the spelling mistakes, I was very distraught at the time of writing lol. It was an amazing movie and it's probably going to be one I keep rewatching over and over again an unhealthy amount.

Do you think Andrey would have called Goncharov just "gonch" if they had more time?

See what people don’t understand is that the best scene in Goncharov 1973 wasn’t even in the movie! In the deleted extras of the film there’s a scene ever so lovingly titled “the bar” and if you haven’t seen it let me sum it up and break it down for you.
The scene starts with Goncharov and Andrey walking into a bar and sitting as far away from everyone else as possible, a young lady takes their orders and then they begin talking. Nothing truly important the two of them just go on about how shitty their lives and their luck are. Then they begin talking about romance and Goncharov claims “I’m unlucky in that department too I’m afraid” to which Andrey responds coldly with “And what of Katya, is she unlucky?” The young lady comes back with their drinks and Goncharov takes a long sip before responding with “everyone in my presence is unlucky”
A powerful fucking line might I add.
Andrey scoffs and sips his drink. He then (I shit you not) glances down at Gonch’s lips and says “I don’t think I mind being unlucky around you.” And he proceeds to down the rest of his drink. At this point in time Goncharov pulls out his pocket watch to check the time despite the clock right behind Andrey. As the scene goes on Goncharov and Andrey drink more and more until it becomes evident in Andrey’s expression that’s he is tired (sleepy drunk Andrey is such a mood). Meanwhile our main man Gonch is still having his staring contest with his watch. The camera switches between closeups of the watch and Andrey scooting closer to Gonch. We notice that the closer Andrey gets the faster the watch ticks until Andrey is laying his head against Goncharov’s and he mumbles “Your watch seems to have the time wrong, it’s going too fast.” “That’s two things my heart and this watch have in common. We should go.” [end scene]
That last line solidifies the connection between Goncharov and time/clocks. But it makes me think that it’s interesting how he compares the two. It implies that he believes his heart doesn’t make good decisions that his heart is wrong, he will never be able to truly live Katya in the way she deserves and he worries that he will be unable to love Andrey the way he deserves. Goncharov is implied to be almost afraid of love.
Also makes me think someone on Ao3 needs to write a time-god Goncharov au and send it to me. It follows “if it bleeds it dies” principles of course.
I can see why this scene was deleted on the account that it wouldn’t fit nicely anywhere in the movie and the pacing was a bit weird and kind of fanservicey but it still would’ve been incredible if this was canon. Fuck it, it’s canon to me. Good night/day/afternoon everyone, that’s enough Deimos bs for today.

who's who in the goncharov au?
Ok this took a while to get to because i hadn't actually watched that movie in over a decade and i needed to rewatch.
Some of my choices required me to take some liberties with the plot of the movie, others were because my memory didn't help me much (I mean, MH would be a great ice pick joe, i now realize, but too late for him now) and others were just because i specifically wanted Viktor in an eyepatch.
More under the cut for possible Goncharov spoilers.
So,
Dimitri as Goncharov, for obvious reasons
Jayce as Mario Ambrosini, he initially works for Goncharov but i swear i thought they had a background story as student rivals, but maybe im mixing fanfic with reality or maybe i saw that in the DVD extras, not sure now
Viktor as Andrey Daddano, did i just do it for the eyepatch? Yes. But the gay subtext with Goncharov helped. But despite his past feelings for Goncharov, the endgame here is Mario x Andrey, i just think they're so compatible. SURE they only have like 2 scenes where they talk but that was enough for my shippy heart 😔💖
Singed as Ice Pick Joe, i feel like his curiosity means he's a man of science at heart, but a man of murder by trade, although he'd rather be helping keep them alive
Mel as Katya, obviously, not because of her relationship with Gonch, she can just get people to do whatever she wants. And the way she convinced Mario to help her in the movie reminded me of her relationship with Jayce. Plus, Katya with a gun made me want Mel with a gun
Heimer as Valery Mikhailov, for his past business association with Katya and the russian institute (i can't spell that name lmao sorry) that remind me of the Council. But also. Heimer with a gun is so funny.
I'm still not sure about Sofia though, if anyone has suggestions... based on the rule of It Would Look Cool as Heck, i'd say Sevika.

honestly it’s kinda fucked up and super indicative of society that we’re seeing so much goncharov x andrey fanfic and fan art but not that much katya x sofia fanfic and art. like i get that gonch and andrey’s relationship takes up a good amount of screen time and is the a plot of the film, but that doesn’t mean we also shouldn’t focus on the relationship between katya and sofia, which imho is almost more compelling because the tragedy to it is so heart wrenching. like we knew from the beginning that the film was going to end the way it did with gonch and andrey, but there was no true telling that it would end that way for katya and sofia. it just goes to show the way women abs treated and valued in this society.
