"Big batteries are muscling gas out of California’s electricity mix, according to data collated by Stanford University Professor Mark Z. Jacobson.

In the 100 days to June 14, California saw a 45% reduction in gas-fired power output, relative to the same period a year before.

The decline was mostly thanks to a surge in battery installations in recent months. The state now has 10.4 gigawatts (GW) of battery storage capacity — a technology it says is key to achieving a 100% clean electricity system by 2045.

Batteries are used to store energy from renewable sources like solar during the day so that it can be deployed in the evening, when solar generation tapers off and demand for power surges. These facilities are increasingly challenging the role of gas plants in meeting peak demand.

On the evening of June 10, for example, big batteries injected a record 7.7GW of instantaneous power into California’s grid. They accounted for a quarter of total electricity supply at that point.

And according to data from GridStatus, gas generation on an average April day in California hit a seven-year low, reversing an earlier trend that had been fuelled by rising electricity demand.

On 89 of the 100 days to June 14, there were periods where renewables generated more than enough electricity to cover all of California’s needs. This excess energy creates a strong business case for batteries, which can charge up when prices are low and discharge when prices are high.

Compared to a year before, utility-scale solar output was up 32% over the 100-day period, wind generation grew 10%, and battery output doubled, Jacobson says. Meanwhile, demand for electricity from the grid was down 3% due to new rooftop solar installations."

WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG, VI, POWDER, and Ekko were all very close and looked out for each other. Ekko worked with Benzo, eagerly awaiting the return of his friends from their wilder hijinks. As they got older, their destinies diverged. Jinx and Ekko stayed true to their natures as resourceful inventors, but their stance on Silco divided them: Jinx becomes his protégée while Ekko vigorously opposes him and the violence shimmer created. He becomes the leader of a resistance group called the Firelights. In Season 2, Powder resurfaces to be reunited with Ekko in one of the series's most poignant storylines—or rather, alternate storylines. Baudry recalls that part of what fueled the multiverse section of Episode 207 was the feeling that Ekko had been given short shrift early on and there was a need to make clear that he, too, was an inventor. "We worked at Fortiche on the first video of Ekko when he was realized as a cham-pion, and there were a few things that we couldn't hit," he said. "One of them is that he is supposed to be a genius. He is supposed to be Leonardo da Vinci. Basically, he's cre-ating his own math system or writing system. So we we wanted to show in that episode that Ekko and Jinx are part of an academy, and they are going to school. Ekko hasn't been as challenged, so he is great, but he's not inventing crazy stuff because his life was not as hard. Canonically, he's supposed to be the one in Zaun who is taking care of the orphans, so we have a bit of that, but he also has his group of teenagers who are fighting against the chem-barons." If anything, Ekko emerged as one of the most unlikely heroes of the show, rising to meet tough sometimes heart-wrenching challenges and becoming a charismatic, beloved leader. Yet Episode 207 suggests a hollowness, something forever missing. Talking about his relationship with the storyboarding teams, the Season 2 director Bart Maunoury recalled giving them a specific direction for a specific shot: "At the very end of 209, I asked them to position Ekko exactly the same way as when he kisses Powder at the end of 207—to show that he's still there, but she isn't."

A Story Untold

There’s a story Kids Next Door operatives have heard about, but don’t know about.

They are taught about that story during their weeks in the Cadets Training up in Arctic Base. Stories about the legendary Sector Z get shared around the campfire whenever sector leaders go to their yearly retreat. And Numbuh 101 may have told you about the broken Recommissioning Module if you ever took the Museum Tour. 

All those stories, about the legendary sector lost after stopping the biggest rebellion seen in the history of the KND. All those stories?

Lies.

Lies created by Global Command to hide the fatidic reality of that spring morning of april 1999. The day where the KND whole foundation was challenged by its biggest heroes.

The day one of its most infamous traitors was the hero of an untold story.

SPN ABC's April Challenge

This month's creation challenge is simple: each day from April 5th - April 30th will be devoted to one letter of the alphabet. And you are invited to create any type of graphic or gifs pertaining to something SPN related with that letter.

For example: For letter "A" you could make a graphic of Abaddon, or a gifset of various SPN Angels, or a collage of multiple characters whose names start with "A", or a moodboard for a pairing whose ship name starts with "A", etc etc.
