HI! so. uh. ive been thinking about a new au while taking a wondrous break from the sea prince and with alien stage infecting my mind rn... i might as well spitball some ideas in regards to it! if all goes well, ill have a fic made of it <3 (reasonably shorter than tsp, i want it to be contained in one fic)

SO. lets talk about it a little!

General blurb;

In a world corrupted and filled to the brim with chaos and nonsense, the Watchers provide a sense of relief and entertainment with their brilliant and stunning performers. Their performances are to die for-- quite literally.

Only the most talented are to succeed within the confines of a glorious stage, only one must take the crown.

So what might happen if the Watchers' top performers compete for the crown?

The Stars of the Show; (wip codenames)

Grian (GR-1AN) | Golden Sun

A child of the Watchers, Grian grew up knowing about his true origin while keeping it a secret from everyone else. He doesn't really want to talk to other performers because of it, and he doesn't see the need to, if he was being honest. He's sick of the life he was forced into, but he performs to survive. He's been doing well so far, enough to be deemed a winner, so he has to be doing something right... right?

Scott (5C-0TT) | Brilliant Star

Once an over rebellious performer, Scott is now the Watchers' best performer out of all winners. After the death of his performing partner, Pearl, Scott has resigned himself to following every whim and command the Watchers give him. He has proved to be a wondrous asset, beating all of his opponents with ease and charm. Though his fellow performers are put off by his attitude, they'd wish to never go against him. He has never lost a match in all of his years of performing.

Pearl (P3-4RL) | Bright Moon

Presumed dead by the public, Pearl works in the shadows to bring the Watchers down. Originally, she and Scott planned to leave together, but after her escape plan went awry she was forced to watch Scott perform alone, silently wishing she was there with him. She has to do this for him. For the rest of the performers, too. She just needs Scott to hold on a little longer, and it'll be like she never left at all.

Martyn (M4-RTYN) | Thrilling Mars

Known for his more aggressive performances, Martyn sets out to keep his audience entertained, even if he's a bit of a hothead. Though, offstage, he tries to make acquaintances with other performers, he can't help but feel a little closed off. He knows death, like everyone else, but it took away Ren. He wouldn't want to strike any more connections than he needs to.... But what's Scott's deal, exactly? Why was he acting like that?

Scar (SC--AR) | Grounding Earth

A bright and cheery performer on the outside, a sick and tired individual on the inside. Scar yearns for the outside world, but he wants to leave with Grian, a man he'd been crushing on for the past few years. He's aware that Grian probably doesn't like him as much as he does, but that distant and longing stare from the man is enough of a conviction that Scar would want to bring Grian with him. Like other performers, Scar is wholly unaware of Grian's origins, and believes that he had a 'normal' upbringing like everyone else.

Cleo (CL-3O-) | Unlabeled as of now

The newest addition in the collection, Cleo is shaken at the thought of performing with more 'dangerous' people. She wants to survive, and hell maybe the others too, but she can't help but be monitored by Scott, or given a distance glance by Grian. All she knows is that she has to get out. The outside world can't be that bad, can it?

Notes;

i want this au to be primarily focused on the winners and their place as the Watcher's 'performers'/captives, but i do want to worldbuild on what had happened to the other lifers!

the fic is probably centered on more platonic bonds overall than anything romantic! completely reasonable if people see some romantic tension haha

100000% theres going to be major character death haha, with the nature of its inspiration id like to mess with that <3 so when i brainstorm further, your favorite lifers may or may not be dead!

bc of the au's nature (since its around singing, with alien stage) im not sure how id write it! i feel writing characters sing is a little hard for me to do, so maybe elaborate dances, hm... its a major part of the story-- and i explicitly dont want them to fight physically!

theres a lot of things i gotta work out the kinks on (whos perspective we follow and whatnot) but i feel i already have the main outline bulleted out! itll be much shorter than tsp so- i think i got it haha

i feel i'll formally work on this after wild life, so whoever becomes this series' winner is probably going to play a vital role :0c i can't incorporate secret or wild into tsp as much but this au can definitely work with those more <3

Dialogue!!!11:

The main thing I did over the past week or so was put together this dialogue system. The system itself was fairly easily to implement, and I think the only interesting part of the process to share is how I went about making the UI. As per usual, I wanted to have a cool mechanical feeling ui, but at the same time a friend of mine suggested an AOL instant messenger inspired chat window. I loved both of these ideas so I decided to combine them into a screen that pops up and contains the aim-like window. The modeling process for the screen was similar to how I went about making the other two bits of ui that are on screen in the above photos, but I decided to include a VGA port.

VGA PORT:

I didn't originally plan to include a VGA port, but I was in the middle of researching monitors and accidentally left a window open on my computer that just had a big photo of one and I went "wait a minute.". With my final two braincells I suddenly decided to slap together a model for the port which I ended up being proud enough of to, for some reason, make an entire section for it.

Sorry if any of the above sentences read horribly. I am going to need a third braincell if you want this stuff to be coherent. Anyway, Blender is so cool. Using the array modifier to make all these lil squares for the holes in the port is just such a satisfying process. I've come to really like makin pre-rendered assets like this.

New Movez:

This is actually a pretty big inclusion, and I probably should've ranked it in my mind above the VGA port. I added some new movement options to the game!

Firstly, I added this melee move where you swing the back of the sniper forwards to propel yourself a bit. It is mainly useful as a bunnyhop that allows you to conserve momentum.

Next up I added this kick that happens if you melee while in the air. It's basically just the one from mario64. It lets you gain a little bit more height and distance. It also becomes way more effective if you have a lot of momentum. A good tool for correcting jumps and reaching new heights.

Finally, we have the big schmovement slide. This slide gives you a huge burst of speed that you can jump out of in order to send your self flyin. Surprisingly, it didn't really break any of the level design and ended up being a really fun addition imo. In order to perform it, you have to do a ground pound and then melee as you hit the ground. Also, I feel like I basically stole this from pseudoregalia. Played through that recently and it has been a good source of inspiration.

Nova!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

This is a cameo skin I've been really excited to finally make myself put in the game. Anodyne 2 is a really important game to me, and I love it much. I'm really happy tha folks at analgesic let me put her in here, and I'm p happy with how her model came together. If you haven't peeped the Anodyne games I highly recommend them. The first one was a major inspiration for parts of Fatum Betula.

Conclusion:

Lately I've been playing this game way too much. It has made it impossible for me to tell if it is fun or well designed. Some problems cropped up during playtesting that ima need to address, and I hope that it all comes together into something that one could say is "fun and cool". I think takin this weekend off is gonna do my brain good. Oh yeah also I feel like I should advertise that I'm still doing commissions if anyone is interested. The impoverished imagination of neoliberal climate “solutions

This morning (Oct 31) at 10hPT, the Internet Archive is livestreaming my presentation on my recent book, The Internet Con.

There is only one planet in the known universe capable of sustaining human life, and it is rapidly becoming uninhabitable by humans. Clearly, this warrants bold action – but which bold action should we take?

After half a century of denial and disinformation, the business lobby has seemingly found climate religion and has joined the choir, but they have their own unique hymn: this crisis is so dire, they say, that we don't have the luxury of choosing between different ways of addressing the emergency. We have to do "all of the above" – every possible solution must be tried.

In his new book Dark PR, Grant Ennis explains that this "all of the above" strategy doesn't represent a change of heart by big business. Rather, it's part of the denial playbook that's been used to sell tobacco-cancer doubt and climate disinformation:

The point of "all of the above" isn't muscular, immediate action – rather, it's a delaying tactic that creates space for "solutions" that won't work, but will generate profits. Think of how the tobacco industry used "all of the above" to sell "light" cigarettes, snuff, snus, and vaping – and delay tobacco bans, sin taxes, and business-euthanizing litigation. Today, the same playbook is used to sell EVs as an answer to the destructive legacy of the personal automobile – to the exclusion of mass transit, bikes, and 15-minute cities:

As the tobacco and car examples show, "all of the above" is never really all of the above. Pursuing "light" cigarettes to reduce cancer is incompatible with simply banning tobacco; giving everyone a personal EV is incompatible with remaking our cities for transit, cycling and walking.

When it comes to the climate emergency, "all of the above" means trying "market-based" solutions to the exclusion of directly regulating emissions, despite the poor performance of these "solutions."

The big one here is carbon offsets, which allows companies to make money by promising not to emit carbon that they would otherwise emit. The idea here is that creating a new asset class will unleash the incredible creativity of markets by harnessing the greed of elite sociopaths to the project of decarbonization, rather of the prudence of democratically accountable lawmakers.

Carbon offsets have not worked: they have been plagued by absolutely foreseeable problems that have not lessened, despite repeated attempts to mitigate them.

For starters, carbon offsets are a classic market for lemons. The cheapest way to make a carbon offset is to promise not to emit carbon you were never going to emit anyway, as when fake charities like the Nature Conservancy make millions by promising not to log forests that can't be logged because they are wildlife preserves:

Then there's the problem of monitoring carbon offsetting activity. Like, what happens when the forest you promise not to log burns down? If you're a carbon trader, the answer is "nothing." That burned-down forest can still be sold as if it were sequestering carbon, rather than venting it to the atmosphere in an out-of-control blaze:

When you bought a plane ticket and ticked the "offset the carbon on my flight" box and paid an extra $10, I bet you thought that you were contributing to a market that incentivized a reduction in discretionary, socially useless carbon-intensive activity. But without those carbon offsets, SUVs would have all but disappeared from American roads. Carbon offsets for Tesla cars generated billions in carbon offsets for Elon Musk, and allowed SUVs to escape regulations that would otherwise have seen them pulled from the market:

Harnessing the profit motive to the planet's survivability might sound like a good idea, but it assumes that corporations can self-regulate their way to a better climate future. They cannot. Think of how Canada's logging industry was allowed to clearcut old-growth forests and replace them with "pines in lines" – evenly spaced, highly flammable, commercially useful tree-farms that now turn into raging forest fires every year:

The idea of "market-based" climate solutions is that certain harmful conduct should be disincentivized through taxes, rather than banned. This makes carbon offsets into a kind of modern Papal indulgence, which let you continue to sin, for a price. Offsets and other market-based climate measures aren't "all of the above" – they exclude other measures that have better track-records and lower costs, because those measures cut against the interests of the business lobby. Writing for the Law and Political Economy Project, Yale Law's Douglas Kysar gives some pointed examples:

For example: carbon offsets rely on a notion called "contrafactual carbon," this being the imaginary carbon that might be omitted by a company if it wasn't participating in offsets. The number of credits a company gets is determined by the difference between its contrafactual emissions and its actual emissions.

But the "contrafactual" here comes from a business-as-usual world, one where the only limit on carbon emissions comes from corporate executives' voluntary actions – and not from regulation, direct action, or other limits on corporate conduct.

Kysar asks us to imagine a contrafactual that depends on "carbon upsets," rather than offsets – one where the limits on carbon come from "lawsuits, referenda, protests, boycotts, civil disobedience":

If we're willing to fund untested longshots like carbon capture, why not measures that have far better track-records? For example, there's a pretty solid correlation between the presence of women in legislatures and on corporate boards and overall reductions in carbon. I'm the last person to suggest that the problems of capitalism can be replaced by replacing half of the old white men who run the world with women, PoCs and queers – but if we're willing to hand billions to ferkakte scheme like carbon capture, why not subsidize companies that pack their boards with women, or provide campaign subsidies to women running for office? It's quite a longshot (putting Liz Truss or Marjorie Taylor-Greene on your board or in your legislature is no way to save the planet), but it's got a better evidentiary basis than carbon capture.

There's also good evidence that correlates inequality with carbon emissions, though the causal relationship is unclear. Maybe inequality lets the wealthy control policy outcomes and tilt them towards permitting high-emission/high-profit activities. Maybe inequality reduces the social cohesion needed to make decarbonization work. Maybe inequality makes it harder for green tech to find customers. Maybe inequality leads to rich people chasing status-enhancing goods (think: private jet rides) that are extremely carbon-intensive.

Whatever the reason, there's a pretty good case that radical wealth redistribution would speed up decarbonization – any "all of the above" strategy should certainly consider this one.

Walters' Story Never Quite Adds Up

So let's talk about Walters.

Walters' explanations to the protagonists are, like the various explanations of the owl/echidna conflict, full of questions and holes. UNLIKE the owl/echidna conflict, we see a number of scenes besides those seen from the perspectives of traumatized children and a rock opera performed by a post-concussion hallucination to piece together what's likely true.

We first see Walters debating with the Joint Chiefs about how to respond to the blackout caused by Sonic. He convinces them to use Robotnik. However, there's a notable absence from this meeting - the President of the United States. And Wikipedia has this to say on the subject: "Following the Goldwater–Nichols Act in 1986, the Joint Chiefs of Staff do not have operational command authority, either individually or collectively..."

After Robotnik vanishes, a joint military/intelligence operation is created to monitor aliens, and Robotniks is basically wiped from existence. Walters ends up in charge.

How? Why?

He presents the issue as this happening "after San Francisco", but astute watchers will recall that by all available evidence, in San Francisco, exactly zero of the damage/injuries(?)/deaths(?) were caused by an alien. It was entirely one (1) US military contractor.

Furthermore, assassinating every one of a former asset's colleagues isn't really standard operating procedure in the US intelligence community except for "burned" (disavowed) assets who pose an immediate threat.

HOWEVER

Astute watchers will question to what degree Robotnik exceeded the directives given to him. He pursued Sonic to the best of his ability, and remained focused on that goal throughout the entire movie.

That's not "unreliable asset" behavior.

But remember what I said up there about the Joint Chiefs not having operational authority?

That means they can't just send US military assets out to do stuff. They can't have a weapons contractor try to secure an alien entity without the go-ahead from the Commander in Chief.

Doing so would constitute a massive overreach on the part of the military and subject everyone involved in the decision to court-martial, removal, and depending on how the military lawyers spin it, treason charges.

You know what I said about "disappearing" an intelligence asset and everyone he knows isn't usually how you disavow a contractor?

It is how you deal with the only guy who can contradict the official story you've given to the President/Congress.

You see the only defense Walters has is claiming Robotnik did all this on no official orders from anybody, and anybody in Robotnik's circle who can claim otherwise is a threat to that story - and him.

Which brings us to the second part of the major inconsistencies. We know now that Walters did in fact have a presence on the Project Shadow base, making him familiar with the concept of Chaos Energy, and the uses to which Gerald and the military might have considered putting it.

He therefore had a vested interest in portraying Sonic, and any other aliens, as a risk - and with the (likely highly-redacted) story about what happened with Shadow, likely had a reasonably easy time of it.

But it WOULD require inflating the amount to which Sonic contributed to the fiasco in San Francisco. Technically, Robotnik could do all that solely because of a quill he possessed from Sonic, making it, in some twisted logic, Sonic's fault.

So frankly at this point, being (a) the only living member of the US military who had direct contact with an alien creature (Shadow), and (b) having avoided all fallout from the Robotnik thing by successfully portraying the entire endeavor as a rogue agent to conceal his involvement in deploying Robotnik, it would be totally natural that having engineered the creation of this task force, Walters ended up in charge of it.

So, the MonHun Wilds beta

The world is great, story seems fantastic so far, and most new mechanics are fun and well balanced.

The SnS rework is god tier and exactly what I've been begging for since Perfect Rush got introduced and ruined our versatility. If they change it before release I will riot.

The game runs like utter, absolute ASS though. It looks hideous relative to the specs required. I have to render it at 1080p to get a playable framerate at high (not ultra!) settings on a 5950X+3090, for a game that looks about the same as World did.

And that's after turning DLSS *off* and swapping to a native 4K res at 50% render resolution. When I use DLSS instead it caps out at 36fps. WHAT.

I'm seeing people online running into heavy CPU bottlenecks (on machines within recommended spec) while monitoring on my game shows the GPU running max while CPU goes up to maybe 6% max, regardless of the resolution + upscaling combo. Average about 2%. Meanwhile I also have info from people who are thereabouts of minimum/recommended spec and are seeing load on CPU but barely any load on GPU at all, suggesting a ridiculous degree of bottlenecking... OR there is something seriously wrong with the game/engine. Can't tell. Could even be false reporting but you can usually rely on Afterburner/Riva sensors...

Feels a whole lot like the recommended specs and the shoehorning of frame generation is due to some huge investment from one of the GPU companies (smells green to me) to justify their fourth generation in a row that doesn't bring actual substantial performance improvements...

That said, the designers of the game are on point as always in this series. The game design, monster and visual design, music and assets are stellar. The overall visuals aren't that great, through a combinations of terrible optimization and the fact that the sandy region is just not a pretty place to be, two out of three seasons are mostly washed out blurry gray sadness.

All in all, I hope the community continues to pressure Crapcom about optimization and performance because this is shameful levels of bad, but the game is going to be an absolute banger in every other respect.

Since they are technically in digital bodies, they do not need to eat nor drink BUT they do get tired now as they aren't constantly being fed electricity like in their digital world, they can recharge by either A. Napping (Not reccomended as it would take a day to fully recharge), B. Going into any devices and just staying there until their battery is full (Alright) or C. They can literally just place a plugged in charger in their mouth and they will recharge (They charge fast this way but with the reader's limited chargers they just tend to do the second option)
