What is AV Design?
Audio visual (AV) design is the process of creating integrated audio and visual experiences. In this blog post, we'll explore what AV design entails, the role of an audio visual (av) designer, common AV design projects and more.

What Does an Audio Visual Designer Do?
An audio visual designer, or AV designer, is a professional who plans, designs and implements integrated audio and visual solutions. Some key responsibilities of an audio visual designer include:
Assessing Client Needs
The first step for an AV designer is to meet with clients to understand their event, space or project goals. They'll discuss details like budget, audience size, content and desired outcomes. This helps the designer determine the right AV solution.
Equipment Selection and Layout
Based on the client needs assessment, an AV designer will select the appropriate audio, lighting, display and other equipment. They'll create detailed plans showing where each piece should be positioned for optimal functionality.
System Integration
Modern AV systems involve integrating different components like speakers, projectors, displays, media players, lighting controls and more. The AV designer ensures everything works seamlessly together.
Programming and Configuration
Many AV systems require programming equipment like mixing consoles or lighting controllers. The AV designer will configure and program these devices for the client's specific needs and event flow.
Testing and Troubleshooting
Prior to events, the AV designer thoroughly tests the entire system is functioning properly. They'll troubleshoot any issues that arise. On-site support may also be provided during live events.
Project Management
For larger installations, the audio visual designer acts as the project manager, coordinating equipment deliveries, setup/tear-down crews and ensuring deadlines are met.
In summary, an audio visual designer takes a client's vision and turns it into a fully integrated and customized audio visual experience. Their expertise spans technical and creative realms.
Common AV Design Projects
Now that we understand the role of an audio visual designer, let's look at some typical projects they may work on:
Corporate Events
Conferences, product launches, all-hands meetings - corporations rely on AV systems to successfully communicate with attendees.
Live Events
Concerts, theaters, sports venues - live event AV designers create immersive experiences for audiences through advanced sound and lighting systems.
House of Worship
Churches, temples and other houses of worship require AV to enhance services, possibly with video, sermon presentations and more.
Higher Education
Universities utilize AV in lecture halls, auditoriums and more to facilitate modern teaching methods. Interactive displays are common.
Hotel & Convention Centers
Permanent AV solutions are designed for ballrooms, meeting rooms and lobby areas in these facilities that host many different events.
Residential
Home theaters, whole-home audio, smart home integration - some audio visual designers work on high-end residential AV installations.
No matter the application, these kinds of projects all benefit from an audio visual designer's specialized expertise in how sight and sound can be strategically combined.
Education and Career Path of an AV Designer
What kinds of educational background and experience does an successful audio visual designer possess? Here are some common career paths:
College Degree
Many audio visual designers hold a Bachelor's degree in fields like audio engineering, film/video production, computer science or design. Coursework covers technical skills as well as design principles.
Certifications
Industry certifications from groups like InfoComm, CTS or ProConnect demonstrate an AV designer's expertise in specific equipment and systems. These are highly valued by employers.
Internships
On-the-job training is vital, so many future AV designers complete internships with audio visual integration firms or similar companies during or after college.
Apprenticeships
For some, apprenticeships provide hands-on skills working under an experienced AV professional on real world projects earlier in their career.
Continuing Education
Technology is constantly evolving, so ongoing learning is important. Conferences, seminars and product training keep designers knowledgeable on the latest innovations.
Experience
Work experience in roles like programming, equipment operation and project assistance allows professionals to learn different aspects of the AV design process before moving into lead design positions.
With the right combination of education, certifications and experience, an audio visual designer can become adept at all stages of AV design, from initial planning through final implementation and support. Their career path requires versatility as well as in-depth technical know-how.
Technical Skills of an AV Designer
To be effective in their work, audio visual designers must stay on top of both the creative and technical sides of the industry. Here are some key technical skills:
Audio Systems
Expert understanding of audio technologies like mixing consoles, amplifiers, speakers, microphones etc. and how to optimize systems for different environments.
Video Systems
Thorough comprehension of projectors, flat panel displays, video switching equipment and alignment/calibration techniques yields crisp, seamless video presentations.
Lighting Systems
Proficiency with lighting control protocols, effects programming and visual design elements amplifies the ambiance and impact of presentations or performances.
Networking & Streaming
Networking equipment and protocols ensure reliable transport of audio and video throughout venues. Streaming competency supports virtual/hybrid events.
Programming Languages
Many AV systems require programming user interfaces, presets, timing/triggering etc. Languages like Lua, JavaScript and proprietary protocols are common.
Collaboration Software
Familiarity with videoconferencing platforms, webinar/meeting tools and other digital collaboration aids facilitates remote or blended AV experiences.
Drafting & Design Software
Use of CAD, drafting, 3D modeling and visualization programs helps audio visual designers effectively plan system layouts, interconnectivity and refine sightlines or lighting designs on paper first.
Technical aptitude in these and other areas allows the audio visual designer to specify, integrate and troubleshoot advanced systems with confidence as technology continues to progress rapidly in the industry. Their multi-faceted role requires ongoing skill development.
Trends in AV Design
Like many fields, AV is constantly evolving. A savvy audio visual designer stays up to date on emerging trends:
Immersive Audio Formats
New standards for 3D, object-based and ambisonic audio bring venue-scale immersion that transports audiences using overhead and projection-mapped sound.
Large Format Displays
Giant LED and LCD video walls with ultra-fine pixel pitches enable unprecedented control over content placement at massive scales.
Networked Lighting Control
IP-based lighting control provides centralized, dynamic lighting effects coordination across fixtures in numerous locations simultaneously.
Digital Signage
DOOH (digital-out-of-home) advertising networks and wayfinding integrate seamlessly with organizational communications through content management systems.
Modular, Scalable Systems
Pre-configured yet flexible modular products designed for easy reconfiguration allow AV systems to adapt with a space over time.
Collaboration Tools Integration
Blending communication platforms within control interfaces streamlines remote participation in events, training and other applications.
An audio visual designer's expertise helps translate emerging concepts while respecting clients' core needs - balancing creativity with practical realities of budget and deadlines. This ensures the industry delivers advanced experiences people have come to expect.
In Conclusion
In summary, audio visual design encompasses strategies and techniques for thoughtfully integrating sight, sound, lighting and more to enhance information delivery and create memorable experiences. An audio visual designer, through technical know-how, project management prowess and understanding user requirements, crafts customized solutions that leverage the latest innovations in AV. Whether it's a corporate event, house of worship service, conference center meeting or residential theater, skilled AV designers lay robust foundations empowering impactful communication for many years to come. Their role remains vital as technology and users' expectations continue to progress rapidly.

will you have any of the head shot drawings of the other characters ever be made? I kinda hate having the only official art of the side characters be doodles on note book pages :(
I mean maybe! I am a writer not a visual artist, so I am sorry for the disappointment. I'll do my best to make better graphics.
#askbox#i also think some fun of the audio medium is making up your own designs with the bit thats given#so i dont want to canonize too much#and i admit it bothers me how much my poor drawings dominate the storys visual identity. thats the only reason im even redoing syd and jed#theyre just not that good

Not even joking when I say that these are the hottest versions of Sweetheart and Milo that I have made thus far. Yes sweetheart is missing an arm, yes this is my headcanon-because phantom limb-get it? because they're a stealth-nevermind I see the door.
A fun headcanon I have is that all the shaw pack members visually have something moon related on their person while all prime Solaire royalty have blood red jewelry like with Vincent here.
#very proud of these two particularly because they visually go well together#they're the gold jewwlry/silver jewelry couple#I might also make it a running gag that all shifters have claw-like shoes#Sadhil gives wizard detective and that feels right#fuck cops tho sweetheart is PI who takes on too much work in my head#redacted audio#redacted asmr#redactedverse#redacted fandom#audio rp#mr. laveau's art gallery#redacted fanart#mr. laveau#asmr rp#character art#character design#character illustration#fan art#digital art#artwork#art#artists on tumblr#artist of tumblr#redacted milo#milo greer#redacted wolf pack#redacted sweetheart#sweetheart#redacted audio sweetheart#redacted audio milo

my favorite genre depends on the medium
movies? scifi/ thrillers
books? fantasy
audio plays? horror
#i have a reason for each one#scifi imo works best in movies because of the grandness of the scales and the visuals of technology and space simply do not compare#cinematography like lighting staging and set design truely make scifi and thrillers work the best#fantasy needs the imagination that is only brought by books the readers own mind fills in the picture to create a magical world#horror works best in audio because it combines the imagination aspect of books with the sound scaling used in movies#background music and sounds set the tone creating an eerie feeling#monsters are only heard their visuals are left to the imagination#horror movies work best if the monster or killer aren’t revealed and remain only in shadows and obscured#once a monster is revealed visually they are not scary anymore and that’s why audio horror just works better#the magnus archives#tma#malevolent#scifi#fantasy#horror

electronic indiepop songs involving cowboys and horses 🐴
spotify
#pardner playlists#yehaw aesthetic#cowboy core#cowboy aesthetic#this playlist is mostly indiepop but theres also some bedroom pop and neofolk#tbqh it's basically a reject pile for all the (catchy-- very catchy) songs i cant put into my other cowboy playlists#because theyre too modern and/or electronic sounding to fit with 1800s settings#(ex: i desperately want to put the lyrics of 'cowboy hat' onto an rdr2 playlist--#--but i cannot stomach the idea of associating y2k bedroom pop music with my grimy gruff outlaw blorbos)#'cowboy dreams' is a really fun cheery playlist ! i listen to it when im tidying up my house or doing laundry#its also smth i listen to when i go on morning walks bc its optimistic and energetic#im proud of how i handled the graphic design on this one !#the glittery cowboy hat is a good visual representation of the sort of Vibes the music has.#its the audio equivalent of a plastic glittery cowboy hat that you can buy for $5 at party city.#its not so much about real cowboys as much as its about the idea of them. the campiness. the artifice.#these songs play around with the cultural icon of the cowboy as a costume#ex: ''the real clint eastwood / the real lee van cleef / ended up in a bar in hull / minus all of their teeth''#if i had to connect this playlist to a western movie i'd probably link it to#zachariah (1971)#or something else similarly camp and absurd#anyways ! enough of my rambling. enjoy and lmk if you found this entertaining.#🤠#pardner posts

a merchandising market i think is missing from the audio drama community is bookmarks. official or unofficial tbh i just think that would be so cool
#the whole dichotomy of books being visual vs podcasts being auditory probably just makes this entire idea a bit silly#and maybe i'm a bit biased anyways because i love bookmarks#but the POSSIBILITIES!!!#much more design variety than stickers and cheaper than art prints/posters#better opportunity for quotes + show motifs alongside the obvious show logos/titles and the like#finch chirps#audio drama#fiction podcasts#audio fiction

I honestly don’t get all the mourning over the editing for the transitions in Bed Friend. That were just normal transitions we get in a lot of dramas? With city scenes that signal we jumped to another part of the city / changed location or had a time jump. That.... so many series do that, not even just in Thailand? German soaps do that all the time 🤷♂️
They always use the same city scenes to bind it to a location. Like the office or Kings loft etc always got the same city sceneries as transition. They are also supposed to give you a vibe of the location. The office being in a busy but expensive looking part of Bangkok. And Kings loft is in a skyscraper (also expensive af for some reason, but programmer and designer earn a lot so it makes sense I guess)
Same for the music fading out (symbolizes time jump). Or music suddenly cuts off as a hard cut into a new scene to make it obvious that the previous scene is over and won’t be continued, since we are in a completely different part of the story now.
Idk that’s just normal audio visual storytelling elements imo. Not every drama / movie does it that way since it’s just one of many ways but still enough do it that’s not feeling odd for me at all.
#bed friend the series#bed friend#audio visual storytelling#bl drama#I kinda feel like one person was complaining and then everyone picked it up for whatever reason#there were surely some things that could have been edited better#but there are also some way worse edited dramas (like Chains of Heart was painful in that regard)#I studied media technology and communication design#which has also film making and storytelling in some classes#I wrote two papers about this analyzing two dramas ways of storytelling

the one downside to playing alan wake 2 for sam to watch, is that I don't get to appreciate the sound design as much without my headset 😔.
#i also turned on the jump scare reduction for them so they don't get scared!#ive heard people are mixed on them and i think that's fair but i love them lol#i love feeling my brain being rattled lol. they alway felt earned and toneally appropriate.#its almost as of scratching out sentences is creating visual distortion within the story#and a constant reminder of the danger#and also the insane attention to detail in the audio design lol
