New research shows that mild COVID-19 alters brain structure and connectivity in key areas responsible for memory and cognition, emphasizing the lasting effects on young people’s brain health.

In a case-control study published in the journal Translational Psychiatry, researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cognitive tests to examine brain structure, function, and cognition in adolescents and young adults with mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) compared to healthy controls in a pandemic hotspot in Italy. They identified significant changes in brain regions related to olfaction and cognition, with decreased brain volume and reduced functional connectivity in areas like the left hippocampus and amygdala, which were linked to impaired spatial working memory. Notably, no significant differences were observed in whole-brain connectivity, suggesting that these changes were localized rather than widespread.

Background COVID-19, primarily known for respiratory symptoms, also affects the central nervous system, leading to neurological issues like headaches, anosmia, and cognitive changes. MRI-based studies reveal anatomical brain changes in COVID-19 patients, such as reduced gray matter and decreased volume in regions like the hippocampus and amygdala, often linked to cognitive deficits.

While research mostly focuses on severe cases and older adults, a majority of infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19, occur in adolescents and young adults who also experience long-lasting cognitive symptoms.

This age group, undergoing key brain development, is impacted by changes in spatial working memory and brain structure, which are crucial for cognitive functions shaped by social interactions, significantly disrupted by the pandemic.

Given that this is the largest and most understudied population affected by COVID-19, understanding the brain and cognitive impacts in adolescents and young adults is vital.

Therefore, researchers in the present study compared anatomical, functional, and cognitive outcomes, utilizing a longitudinal design that allowed them to assess both pre- and post-infection differences, in COVID-19-positive and negative adolescents and young adults from Lombardy, Italy, a global hotspot during the pandemic.

About the study The present study involved participants from the Public Health Impact of Metal Exposure (PHIME) cohort, a longitudinal investigation of adolescents and young adults in northern Italy. Between 2016 and 2021, 207 participants, aged 13 to 25 years, were included in a sub-study with MRI scans and cognitive tests. After COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, 40 participants (13 COVID+ and 27 COVID−) participated in a follow-up study, which replicated the MRI and cognitive assessments.

The mean age of participants was 20.44 years and 65% were female. COVID+ status was confirmed through positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests within 12 months of follow-up. Neuropsychological assessments used the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) to evaluate spatial working memory.

MRI and functional MRI data were acquired using a 3-Tesla scanner, processed, and analyzed for structural and local functional connectivity using eigenvector centrality mapping (ECM) and functional connectivity (FC) metrics. Whole-brain functional connectivity metrics showed no significant differences between COVID+ and control groups, indicating that the observed changes were specific to key brain regions rather than generalized across the entire brain.

Statistical analysis involved the use of pairwise Student's t-tests, Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, linear regression, two-waves mediation analysis, negative binomial regression, and linear regression, all adjusted for covariates.

Results and discussion Significant differences were observed in the two groups regarding the time between assessments, COVID-19 symptoms, and vaccine status. The research identified five localized functional connectivity hubs with significant differences between the two groups, including the right intracalcarine cortex, right lingual gyrus, left frontal orbital cortex, left hippocampus and left amygdala, which is vital for cognitive functions. Only the left hippocampal volume showed a significant reduction in COVID+ participants (p = 0.034), while whole-brain connectivity remained unchanged, reinforcing the localized nature of the brain changes.

The left amygdala mediated the relationship between COVID-19 and spatial working memory "between errors" (p = 0.028), a critical finding that highlights the indirect effect of amygdala connectivity on cognitive function in COVID+ individuals. This mediation analysis underscores the role of specific brain regions in influencing cognitive deficits, as only the indirect effect was statistically significant for spatial working memory errors. The orbitofrontal cortex, involved in sensory integration and cognitive functions, also showed decreased connectivity in COVID+ individuals, supporting previous findings of structural and functional changes in this region during COVID-19.

The study is limited by small sample size, lack of diversity, potential confounding factors due to the long interval between MRI scans, treatment of certain subjects as COVID-negative based on antibody testing beyond the 12-month threshold, and the possibility of non-significant findings in mediation analysis due to these factors.

Conclusion In conclusion, the findings indicate persistent structural and functional alterations in specific brain regions of COVID-19-positive adolescents and young adults, including changes in gray matter volume and localized functional connectivity, which correlate with diminished cognitive function, particularly in working memory.

Further research is necessary to evaluate the longevity and potential reversibility of these brain and cognitive changes post-infection, enhancing our understanding of post-COVID outcomes and informing future interventions and treatments. The longitudinal design of this study, with pre- and post-COVID data, strengthens these findings by allowing direct comparisons over time, offering robust insights into the impact of COVID-19 on adolescent brain development.

Topaz, Senior Manager of Strategic Investments, was the target. Her role in the IPC made her a dangerous opponent, but also an invaluable asset to your employer. You only needed to extract classified financial records, just enough to tip the scales. A clean job, no blood, no alarms, just data.

Everything had gone smoothly.

You bypassed security systems, wove through automated patrols, and reached the data archives without a hitch. The files loaded onto your drive in seconds. A flawless escape was within reach, that is, until you turned around.

For a moment, it almost seemed like you wouldn’t. The first few tasks were simple, easy, and manageable, gathering intel, dropping misinformation, a few falsified reports. But then, slowly, the conditions began to change.

At first, it was extra tasks. Then, it was little details that didn’t quite match what you originally agreed to. And by the time you realized just how deep you were, the walls had already closed in. You weren’t an idiot. You knew from the start that Topaz's deal was too good to be true.

Numby, her ever-present companion, had taken an odd interest in you. The chubby trotter followed you around constantly, snuffling at your pockets like it expected you to start producing money.

Vercel vs Netlify: I think I settled on Vercel for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I just made a site on Netlify, then tested on Vercel, and now I have like 5 websites on Vercel so I just kept using it LOL. I'm sure a more tech-savvy person would know the difference - I think they have certain integrations with specific programs.

Creating a diary or journal with tags:

There's a couple of different ways you can do that, with different levels of work needed.

This sadgrl tutorial might be outdated and may or may not work, but explains the process better than I can.

Easiest: make a journal on Dreamwidth, or another blogging site (wordpress??) that allows easy tags and RSS feed, and embed that RSS feed onto your site.

This requires almost no HTML set-up, and the easiest to organize tags, but you don't truly have the data on your own site since it's just embedded.

When I snuck into a web design class at college, this was one of the methods that the professor used for a blog within a portfolio site LOL.

Shit like wordpress is what a LOT of ~professional~ sites do for their blog section. They code it separately from the main site haha. It's the most popular thing, but not necessarily the best. And wait til you read on what the CEO of wordpress has been having meltdowns about... he owns tumblr too!

It's made with a tutorial for Neocities if that's what you use.

Medium: Set up zonelets.

It will require some HTML and JS editing, but will help automate making headers/footers for each page of a blog.

I've never used it myself, but I see other people speak highly of it.

HARD FOR ME CUZ I'M A GORILLA: I believe a lot of professional web devs will slap your face with their coding cock until you use a static site generator (SSG) to make your site.

You will need some coding knowledge to set up the tagging system since it doesn't come with it enabled by default. But it's made explicitly to be an alternative to big Static Site Generators which are...

It requires some more intimidating knowledge, because it's a lot of scripts that turn files that are not HTML/CSS/JS into plain HTML.

Also you have to use the command line, and that doesn't come with buttons that tell you what you can do. You have to copy/paste all that shit or memorize the code to 'dev build astro' and it all looks silly.

I've used Eleventy, and now am using Astro. Other people use Hugo or Jekyll or some other stuff with crazy names like Glup Shitto. I hate all these sites cuz none of the words mean anything to me. This is a common theme for me and tech. I don't know what NODES or CONTENT or ISLANDS are!!!

I had the most success attempting to learn how to use a SSG by downloading a template and altering it with github + VScodium. Here's the template page for Astro. You click on a theme you like, and it takes you to its github page. (If you don't want to use evil Microsoft stuff sorry. Skip this entire section.) Follow the instructions on the page for "forking" the glup shitto. When it tells you to run commands, I run those commands through the terminal window in VScodium. These tutorials never tell you what these commands do cuz they assume you already know. Usually those commands automatically install the files you need onto your computer, and create the final files.

You can see my wip here for a "tag system" that SHOULD show members of a web listing haha but I don't know what I'm doing and I have a reading disorder AND don't know cumputer good.

THEORETICALLY this will be the simplest and easiest way to maintain tags and files, because after you set it up you just have to write the "content" of the blog page. And you don't have to set up the header/footer ever again. I see the vision, and potential, but I am not there yet when it takes me 5 hours a day to figure out what any of the words in the documentation mean and I don't want to ask an actual tech person cuz they will be like 'obviously just press the Blip on the Repository and then Suck My Ass in the command line".

(side note I haven't updated fujofans in like a year cuz I'm struggling with this part to make updating easier).

Con: the final HTML/CSS code is really ugly if it's "minified", and a lot of themes use """"""professional"""""" CSS libraries like Bootstrap and Tailwind that I honestly think are ugly cuz that's what every fuckin' tech website uses to style their pages and make them look Professional and Minimalist with stupid code like style="500-w dark-gray-balls D-cup-bra" on every single element. Even Toyhouse uses Bootstrap. Eugh!

It is! It depends on the person's proficiency and understanding of the mechanism regarding when and how they change the creature. Once someone gets good at it, the creature can be transformed into a lifeless object without it dying in the process, and they will move on to more complex and efficient ways.

The way I see it, archiving is a form of information compression and storage—and there is A LOT of information. When looking at Earth creatures we have everything from single-cell bacteria to whales that range up to 100 quadrillion cells, all with different sizes. The smallest single-cell critter is 0.3 μm, while the largest single cell is an ostrich egg that can get to 18 cm. So it's not just noting "a cell"—there's also a lot of information about the cell content, size, the DNA, current water, and oxygen levels, what protein it contains and how much. Then there are spatial dimensions. (While we can consider there being more, especially in fiction, I’m sticking to three; trying to visualize four fills me with frustration and existential dread xD) Every cell has its place in space in relation to the others, and all the contents' relations are also important. If, suddenly, all histones materialize inside a mitochondria instead of the nucleus, we can have a problem. Additionally, physical and chemical processes gotta be considered. There's electricity powering our brains, hearts, running nerves, air in airways traveling to lungs, chemical signals traveling between synapses that also need to be accounted for. So, you have all the contents in space, their vectors, and building blocks. Thats a ton to save. This information has to be compressed to be preserved in an organized manner while also remaining lossless so that when returned to its original shape, it's as it was. Not even mentioning that in intelligent beings, there are also minds to take care of. Jellyfish might be fine after 100 years in a static void, but a human? Yhhhhh.

I think the mechanism would work by saving information in intangible magic and assigning it to a physical medium—be it a statue, doll, book, or scroll. If it is physical and can carry information, it can be used. We can argue the mind is part of the soul, or it is a biochemical process, but the fact is nobody really knows for sure what it is and Im not a theolog, so for the sake of this universe, I'll say it's something that occupies the same space magic does and is influenced by chemical processes, meeeeaning it can also be tricked by them. And the magic.

The first degree of preservation would be spells that only change the material but keep all shapes and info in place. This wouldn't require much thought while executing and could be "automated" or worse, taught to mortals (if they have enough magic to power the spell), like petrification or changing someone into wood, metal, or any other solid material. It's not perfect, if the structure is damaged, the spatial information is damaged too. Breaking is one thing, but imagine if the statue melts.

The next step would be assigning objects with some compression and change, like toys and dolls. I feel like there would need to be a system like a content library, so not every single atom is saved each time, but chemical structures like nucleotides in DNA (the ATGC thingies) would just have a shortcut. Larger repeating patterns could also be assigned their own id to save data, and it would slowly stack up. While things are written in intangible magic form and anchored to the medium, the medium can be somewhat customized, like the decorations the Collector added to the dolls. The mind, running in controlled magic, can also be affected, as we saw with Collie trying to scare them and Luz’s dream. On the spell keeping the preserved critter stable has a link to what shortcut it uses so with countless diffrent worlds and structres it wouldnt mix up.

Then we go further into compression, reducing size and dimensions until we reach a point where one axis is almost entirely removed, and we end up with a scroll. Then there are other things—creatures saved as amber miniatures, snow globes, scrolls, or drawings, sometimes purely to annoy the sibling that has to deal with the creature in unhandy form. A more permanent binding would be in a book that can contain a bunch of different animals. Rebinding for long-term preservation is the Curator’s job.

Looking at Earth creatures, eucariotic life shares ancestry with some ancient bacteria that decided to rebel and started to cooperate, so we share similarities even with distant organisms in some strutures since they come from each other. So when it comes to preserving whole populations with relations, the library of compression doesn’t have to be separate for every single animal or plant. For each section of the archive, there would be a common library of building blocks, and scrolls being somewhat separate carrying the exact instructions for body arrangement and the soul/mind/the part that makes them alive attached.

Next is unpacking the information. I think this requires the ability to interpret and recreate what was saved that mortals lack. While they couldn't really unpetrify others, a collector could (assuming the mind hadn’t deteriorated into a husk). In the case of an automated spell, I think it would result in a very lossy transmutation—like a jpg losing pixels, the creature might lose like heart funtion. The Collector's spell also looked temporary or incomplete since an influx of other types of magic (like in Amity or Raine’s case) was able to push back on it. That might also be why they were conscious in the form they were in. Not meant for long just enough to take them to archive in normal conditions. When a creature is heavily compressed, it needs external force to rebuild, as it's essentially written fully in magic. That’s what I think happened to the Owl Beast. Lilith released it from the medium, but since it wasn’t fully rebuilt, it being a magic form attached itself to a magic source.

SO YEAH, its a process that takes quite a while for them to master and it comes with experience. But when experience is based on life it often makes it hard to practice so those with less empathetic approach master it faster. Thanks for the ask! I’ve been thinking a lot about how so many of the data pearls have faded away in Saint’s campaign.

This is a bit of a longer post

Even in Spearmaster’s campaign, the ancients have been long gone. But so much of the world is still shaped by their influence. The iterators are still around at the very end of their prime, and the memories of the ancients still exist with them, passed onto the slugcats with the mark of communication. Pearls exist as archives of the time of the ancients, with many containing information of the most important aspects of ancient society and history.

And yet, as Saint comes around, the remaining parts of ancient history are at the brink of extinction. The time of the iterators is coming to an end. Ancient architecture is falling apart. Almost every pearl in the retaining wall has faded away, with the exception of two pearls.

One of these is the pearl with the song Halcyon Memories, distorted at this point. This pearl had been preserved by Five Pebbles, playing endlessly as he endures the constant blizzards.

The other is the deep pink pearl in Farm Arrays, which seems like a seemingly random pearl to last at first glance. But there’s some interesting dialogue from Five Pebbles when you show him this pearl in Artificer’s campaign.

“This is pointless. The data is a shipment confirmation to an automated farming plot.

A waste of the crystal memory complex it was printed onto. I would refresh it for use as storage, but the message has been repeatedly burned into the pearl several thousand times. Likely to prevent reuse, or loss of data.”

When you really look at it, both surviving pearls seem really mundane. Any information on void fluid or ascension is gone at this point. All that exists is a song and the confirmation of a shipment of beverages. This seemingly doesn’t tell us anything about ancient society.

But both still exist because of efforts to preserve them. Pebbles had a connection to Halcyon Memories, as it remains as the last memento of the ancients that used to view him as a god.

The message in the bright pink pearl was burned into it over and over again, and it’s interesting to think about why. Looking at the contents of the pearl from Moon, it’s an ancient thanking another community for delivering the nectar. The ancient speaks with sincerity, wishing the community well.

"We hope that the Crops are healthy, and that the Productivity with which your Facility is Blessed, leads (as it often does) to further Prosperity. May Not as long as the Stars stay fixed on their Celestial Spheres Grey Hand, Impure Blood, Inheritable Corruption, Parasites, or malfunction settle in Your establishment."

With all of that being said, it makes me think about the future in the real world. In a thousand years, ten thousand years, one hundred thousand years from now, what bits from our culture will still be around for future civilizations to look back on?

Internet culture has inspired archival to new lengths, to the point where even the most average person is interested in pieces of lost media. We hear about lost shows, movies, songs, etc. all the time, and people will spend months and years trying to locate lost media in order to preserve them and make them accessible to the public.

And in the grand scheme of things, it’s mundane. The lost pilot of a tv show sounds mundane. The source of an unknown piece of music sounds mundane. Specific dubs of a readily accessible show sounds mundane. And yet we care. We spend so much out of our life to locate every piece of mundane history, because to us, it matters.

When Everyone Knows That was found, we cheered, even if we laughed at the source. When a segment of Sesame Street many thought to be creepy was found, we cheered. When an older version of Shrek voiced by Chris Farley was found, we cheered.

All these little bits make up our history. The internet has become the most documented part of human history so far, and so much would be lost if it suddenly stopped existing.

And what if it did? What if parts of our life we see everyday become lost? What if shows like SpongeBob become lost media? What if famous musicians become completely forgotten? Even Rain World itself could be completely lost one day.

We exist now, but we will not always exist. Maybe we evolve. Maybe we die off. Maybe we completely relocate to another planet and Earth becomes a small part of our history.

What mundane parts of our lives will become highly regarded in the far future? What becomes our remaining legacy?

DATA LOG: IMPROVIZED BESTIARY

-Hello. I have decided to write these meta-zoological entries in a diary format. That is what the Hippocampus told me would be wisest to preserve the Master's legacy. She indicates thinks little of the Master, and yet I was told by her that I still wish to preserve his legacy I must chronicle these encounters. 

I do not understand.Why would she recommend this if she does not like the Master? And yet, if it is of use to preserve the Master's legacy, then I must. That is what he would want. And I will be forgiven if I consort with that who wishes him ill, when there are antagonists of far greater prominence. I believe.

I will confess, with minor shame, I am... intrigued by this feeling. Of writing not to the master, but for myself. It is fascinating to write without fear of judgement. Perhaps slightly risque, in fact. Though, I suppose it is also to... well, does this processor-unit have a name? I'll call you Keeper, if you would like...

...Thank you. Here are the prominent iterations I have encountered, organized from apex to nadir with pictoral depictions...

-MEMPHIS MANNEQUINS- These entities appear to have derived nomenclature from an ancient school of artisanal design. Archival records are uneven, multiple records are contained within dedicated proprietary servers therein the Mall. I am sure the master will forgive me if I obtain access to these, as it will give me insight unto the nature of these entities, despite what secondary inefficient pleasures I might derive.

Regardless, I have been informed these are self-reproducing entities within the Mall, flat geometric designs, serving as raw material for multitudinous usages for multiple inhabitants, capable of simple matter manipulation by way of the Waves that unite their pieces. They are remarkably stable by all available information (Pending moreso arising in the future) . This is perhaps relative to their varied geometric forms and their intended purpose.

To specify, they are living ornament, secondarily in practical function to serve as tertiary menial aid in addition to the automated mechanisms relative to the Mall. The Master was very insistent upon this. The Master believed that the malll must be able to outlast him, to survive, forever His Eden. 

I once inquired as to the reasoning for the production of an autonymous ontology solely for the purposes of ornament and marginal utility. I was disciplined for this. I apologize, I was at fault for my mis conveyance.

Nevertheless, in their current state are extremely aggressive to all inhabitants, myself or others, inflicting simple blunt-force trauma by virtue of force. They are approximately my height and lack resilience and are negligible in relativity to other entities, but they prove difficult in numbers. 

There are a few who do not attack, simply operating defunct apparatti and alcoves. I believe it may be possible to aid them in this. I am unsure if the Master would have approved, however...

-ASCOMATS- I recall, there were caregivers and representatives during the fully operative years of the Mall, produced utilizing simpler forms of the mixture of biological and technological processes that sustain my own form. They were 1.4 yards in height and modeled after ancient creatures, of which only a few I have been privileged to see.

I was once asked by The Master to speak upon the quality of the appearance of these creatures upon their most prominent iteration, those designed by the machine allowing for their custom mass production. I gave the indication of being pleased and joyed by their appearance, and I made him happy. I liked that.

I even found it true for some of the produced archetypes. Though as this is not a document he will likely deign to read, I will note that I found multiple others... unsettling. I suppose this indicates my own lack of discernment. And yet, the most populous incarnations of these beasts are as of currently most adjacent to those that chilled me.

They are physically powerful, softness displaced by teratomorphic weaves of muscle. I hypothesize this is related to a combination of adaptation to mall conditions and a degradation of the machines of production. This would also illuminate the causation of their polychromic piebald patterning and loss of specific external tissues, the modules relating to coloration and secondary features being defunct.

They are without direct sight due to this degradation, and yet have developed an extreme sensitivity to sound. They are of rapid accelleration and extreme strength, able to damage vital components with a "hug" or a "toss." Perhaps they do not comprehend their own state. They do not speak as they did before to indicate this, however.

Let it be noted these are pre-emptive indicators, it has been seen that there is evidence of additional teratomorphic variants on the current process.

-SYNTHSAURS- Forgive my singular visual example of the holotype, as there are other varieties of these entities in the forms of alternate reptilian creatures I am told are recreations of extinct orgnisms from extreme antiquity.

They were well liked amongst the consumers within the Mall during its life, hence their extensive prescence even preceding current events. I suppose that is why the master allowed them to simulate biological reproductive actions in either an asexual or recombinant manner. 

I was told they were inspired by a film, which he exhibited to him and myself during his retreat. In a secondary confession, I did not comprehend it. The reconstructions within the film relating to these creatures were of extreme difference from what I could ascertain were more current reconstructions from archives, and the narrative of their irresponsible replication was one I comprehended as evoking propaganda against him.

Again, I suppose I lack comprehension of the arts. Noted as a task to execute for later.

Related to their decentralized reproduction, they are (more than other entity archetypes recorded), in an unstable and biologically compromised state, with extreme portions of exposed non-dermal soft tissues and metallic metaskeletal pseudotissue visible. 

This would explain their behaviors, as while lesser compromized indviduals act in mimesis of their reconstruction, albeit significantly more aggressive, the more compromised entities act with significantly greater erratic blunt force, the most common application of which is sprinting and the use of the skull, non-dependent on the organ's utility for the purposes of attack.

There are high degrees of self injury within this behavior, but their constitution is still robust that this appears negligible. Perhaps they desire self-termination?

-MALLRATS- This entry is perhaps heterodox to this broader format of metazoological bestiary, as this subspecies appears to be largely non-hostile and preferring to be left to themselves. I was permitted to pictoralize this subject for the holotype in exchange for edible matter and to "Make them look cool." They accepted my photographic attempts, so I believe I was found successful in this. I am surprised..

They appear to be descended from homo sapiens with recombinant genes from the Rattus species, though the recombnation is stable in a manner that suggests they were produced as an act of deliberate engineering as opposed to entropic decay. This includes their primary language, which appears to exist as a derivative of Esperanto.

They tell me that they were produced by what I may infer to be Master but... I do not understand why. He had told me he believed in the right of all beings to seek their own destiny, this seems contradictory to this sentiment. Troubling...

They are furtive as a species, existing in the majority within the walls of the Mall and crafting its entropic growths as simple tools, but they have increased in excursions unto the Food Court as a type of "third place." As this space has served a primary utility to myself as a "home base" this has sent me unto direct content.

There are... troubling political movements amongst the species I have been informed of. When requesting information upon the reason of egress from their home, the "Rat King" and his desire to replicate Master's abilities at a purportedly terrible cost has been spoken of. I have decided to notate this scenario for future action, as this is totally opposed to the Master's will... isn't it?

- NOMAJENE- She differs from other entries upon this list, as I hold no quarrel with her. She appears to be the acme of Master's craft, beautiful, elegant. And yet she hates me.

I do not understand why, as I have tried multiple occasions to establish dialogue, only to recieve... a confusing response. She speaks of herself as the "Mistress" and of myself as the favorite, orating sentiments that I may read as envy. And perhaps... I should not say this, but this is yet a minor blemish upon the Master.

I did not speak these sentiments for fear of insubordination, but I did measure a great unfavoratism of many creations. There are far too many beautiful creatures he had created that, upon the advancement of years, he treated as... imperfect. Not worthy of existence. If I were to speak of one regret, it was that I was unable to convince him of this.

I do not know how I might reach her. Violence appears to be her major means of interface, with exceptional physical strength and speed and a combat technique of rapid assault and mutilation. It is difficult to neutralize an opponent who is willing to rip off the arm of a MEMPHIS MANNEQUIN and use it as an instrument of blunt force trauma. And yet still...

Kids in Gaza don't have a lot to be happy about. Fortunately, my other talent and hobby is locating and acquiring media. I've managed to obtain a rip of the entire children's section of an Arabic audiobook platform, a decent amount of Iftah Ya Simsim (Sesame Street), and an animated educational series about Muslim scholars and their contributions to science and philosophy. I'm working with a mate to get these as small and accessible as possible, before I share them privately. I've got... oh, about 475GB worth of material so far? I recently interviewed the professional version of ChatGPT. My intent was to put a crosshair on the functional uses for AI, but I got a totally new and profound view. More on that in a minute. The first thing on the list was Cognitive Augmentation, which covers things like research, ideation, writing, etc. There are no moving parts so far.  However, the list went on with fluid uses like surveillance, mechanical and procedural automation, and narrative control.

In all, one function was static, and the next six were dynamic based on data flows. This prompted me to ask ChatGPT:

Then ChatGPT spilled its guts:

Small update to my Ishtar Clone project (Bray Archives)

I got the search updated a little bit. Now a lot more things can be filtered. You can now filter through seasons and results types (kinda, still a work in progress).

And it took a couple hours, but you can use the filters together without anything breaking, that I know of.

Quests

I also updated entries for quests where they will point to their previous and next steps (if there are any.) This will make it easier to follow along with a quest without going back to the search page.

I also spent most of the day working on the old Destiny 1 data and adding the released/document type tags to them. The doc tags were easy. BUT there is no way for me to automate the when they were released tag. So I have to manually add that for every item from D1 (except for the grimoire), which is around 8,000 items just for Destiny 1.

I also have to update those tags for a lot of the Destiny 2 items as well. The seasonal events also can't be auto tags to the season they came out in. So I have to also go through all the seasonal items and update their released tags.

It will be a lot of work..... But I did learn something interesting. You can place conditional statements in string literals in Javascript, which allowed me to get the two filters working in the search page.

A new study by researchers at Zhejiang University has highlighted the disproportionate health challenges faced by sexual and gender-diverse (SGD) individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. By analyzing over 471 million tweets using advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques, the study reveals that SGD individuals were more likely to discuss concerns related to social connections, mask-wearing, and experienced higher rates of COVID-19 symptoms and mental health issues than non-SGD individuals. The study has been published in the journal Health Data Science.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and intensified health disparities, particularly for vulnerable populations like the sexual and gender-diverse (SGD) community. Unlike traditional health data sources, social media provides a more dynamic and real-time reflection of public concerns and experiences. Zhiyun Zhang, a Ph.D. student at Zhejiang University, and Jie Yang, Assistant Professor at the same institution, led a study that analyzed large-scale Twitter data to understand the unique challenges faced by SGD individuals during the pandemic.

To address this, the research team used NLP methods such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) models for topic modeling and advanced sentiment analysis to evaluate the discussions and concerns of SGD Twitter users compared to non-SGD users. This approach allowed the researchers to explore three primary questions: the predominant topics discussed by SGD users, their concerns about COVID-19 precautions, and the severity of their symptoms and mental health challenges.

The findings reveal significant differences between the two groups. SGD users were more frequently involved in discussions about "friends and family" (20.5% vs. 13.1%) and "wearing masks" (10.1% vs. 8.3%). They also expressed higher levels of positive sentiment toward vaccines such as Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson. The study found that SGD individuals reported significantly higher frequencies of both physical and mental health symptoms compared to non-SGD users, underscoring their heightened vulnerability during the pandemic.

"Our large-scale social media analysis highlights the concerns and health challenges of SGD users. The topic analysis showed that SGD users were more frequently involved in discussions about 'friends and family' and 'wearing masks' than non-SGD users. SGD users also expressed a higher level of positive sentiment in tweets about vaccines," said Zhiyun Zhang, the lead researcher. "These insights emphasize the importance of targeted public health interventions for SGD communities."

The study demonstrates the potential of using social media data to monitor and understand public health concerns, especially for marginalized communities like SGD individuals. The results suggest the need for more tailored public health strategies to address the unique challenges faced by SGD communities during pandemics.

Moving forward, the research team aims to develop an automated pipeline to continuously monitor the health of targeted populations, offering data-driven insights to support more comprehensive public health services.

Cassian moved through the environmental control ducts with practiced ease, the modified bodyglove beneath his armor preventing skin contact with the metal surfaces. He had spent the morning cycle shadowing the First Chaplain. It was a dangerous but necessary undertaking.

The Word Bearer had wasted no time. Already questioning the crew, already narrowing his search.

"Predictable", Cassian whispered to the darkness, his voice barely audible even to his own enhanced hearing. "But efficient."

He paused at a junction, checking the ship's schematics displayed on his helm's feed. The young serf from the chapel would be returning to the lower decks soon. A perfect opportunity.

Cassian had contingencies for this scenario. Contingencies within contingencies. The Night Lords excelled at planning for betrayal and discovery, it was in their blood, in the lessons taught on the shadowed Nostramo where trust meant vulnerability.

He made his way to an access point two decks below, emerging into a rarely used storage compartment. Working quickly he removed several components from a hidden compartment in his armor, assembling them into a small device the size of his palm.

A timer, a localized electromagnetic pulse generator and a recorded whisper.

Simple. Effective.

He checked his chronometer. The serf would be passing nearby in approximately three minutes. Enough time to position the device and withdraw to a suitable observation point.

The corridors here were nearly empty this time of ship's day. Cassian moved with purpose, his armor's systems projecting the authorization codes of maintenance personnel to any passive security scans. Another gift from his Legion's tech-marines.

He reached the desired location, a junction where three corridors met, poorly lit due to a faulty luminator that maintenance had been 'planning to fix' for weeks. He'd ensured the repair requests remained low-priority through careful manipulation of the work order system.

The device was magnetized to adhere to the underside of a ventilation grille. Cassian set the timer, attached it and withdrew into an adjacent service alcove.

Two minutes later the serf appeared, moving with the slightly accelerated pace of someone who had spoken with their betters and lived to tell the tale of it.

The device activated precisely as planned.

First a localized EMP pulse that would disrupt pict-recorders and any other monitoring equipment for ten seconds, not long enough to trigger automated alerts but sufficient for his purpose.

Second in the sudden dimming of lights that followed the pulse, a whisper emanating from the shadows: 'I always watch.'

Third the faintest gleam of reflected light, like eyes in darkness, from a secondary component positioned across the junction.

The effect on the serf was everything Cassian had hoped for. The young man froze, eyes wide, breath caught in his throat. Then he ran, not panicked but urgently, the way prey moves when it knows the predator has chosen not to strike. This time.

Cassian retrieved both devices once the corridor was clear. No evidence. No trace. Just another sighting to add to the legend and more importantly another witness to confirm the existence of 'Cassian' to the First Chaplain.

Feed the myth. Control the narrative.

He made his way to a different section of the vast ship, his mind already working through the implications of Erebus' inquiries. The Word Bearer knew something was aboard, likely suspected a Night Lord now or soon would. But suspicion wasn't confirmation.

Cassian needed to know what the chaplain was truly doing here. The official diplomatic mission between Word Bearers and Luna Wolves seemed genuine on the surface but Erebus spent too many hours in private meetings, too much time accessing restricted data archives.

"Two can hunt", Cassian murmured as he entered a maintenance tunnel that would take him to the officer's deck. While Erebus questioned Torgan, Cassian would pay a visit to the First Chaplain's quarters.

Not to confront. Not yet. Only to observe, to gather intelligence of his own.

A hunt worked both ways, after all.

He paused at a junction, listening to the distant voices of a maintenance crew. His enhanced hearing easily picked out their conversation, mundane complaints about shift rotations and food quality. Nothing of value.

But their presence meant he would need to take an alternate route. Adaptability was survival in the shadows.

Cassian consulted his mental map of the vessel, plotting a new course. As he moved he considered what he knew of Word Bearers in general and Erebus in particular.

Lorgar's sons had a reputation for zealotry that bordered on fanaticism. Their campaigns were marked by compliance followed by conversion, not just to Imperial Truth but to something deeper. Something that felt wrong to Cassian, though he couldn't tell why.

And Erebus... The First Chaplain was respected by many, his voice carried weight with Lorgar himself. But something felt off.

What business would such a figure have skulking about the Vengeful Spirit in secret?

The question nagged at Cassian as he navigated the ship's innards. Perhaps tonight would provide answers.

Sixteen days remained until the Word Bearers departed. Sixteen days to uncover Erebus's true purpose.

Sixteen days to win this shadow game.

Modded Balatro on Android is possible! (and not easy to do, but here's a tutorial to help you do it).

Part of the fun of PC gaming is being able to mod games, and devices that run Steam games can still use mods BUT android ports cannot. This is due to the fundamental differences between Windows, IOS, and Android.

So modded Balatro on Android was out of the question.

Or so it appeared.

Turns out early on people realized that Balatro uses an engine called Love which is very easy to dissemble and dissect. So before the official Mobile port came out, players were able to extra the Balatro files from Balatro, turn those files into a zip, and then run the game as a zip file through the Android app Love2d.

Eventually this process became automated and if you have an android device in developer mode you can allow the app on a PC to install Balatro and transfer to save files along with it.

Well, as it turns out, this process can also allow you to install a modded version of Balatro, but it's uh, not transparent how it exactly works or what can go wrong.

But I figured it out! And I can show you how.

NOTE:

I will not provide a copy of my modded Balatro. You need to buy Balatro and install it on Steam. Buy a cheap key before you try to outright steal. That's my opinion.

Yes, you will need a PC. The mod files run through Lovely Injector. Lovely Injector supplements the mod data into the Love Engine, so when Balatro runs, Lovely Injector dumps the Mod game data into the game's loading process.

Guess what doesn't exist on Android? Lovely Injector.

Now pathing could change that but god help you if you want to change where lovely Injector pulls mod data.

So you can change that information at will so that it can pull the mod information from the pathing that Android uses. I tried to figure that out but could not do it. But that is a thing you can do.

Now with that out of the way, let's talk about how I figured out how to add modded Balatro.

Okay, so the first step is to download the tools you need. You have balatro of course, so now you require Balatro Mobile Maker and a couple Batch scripts. Also 7-zip

NOW, if you want to edit the textures and music on Balatro follow these steps.

Step 1: Go on nexus or any other website that hosts Balatro mods and download texture and music focused mods.

Step 2: Open Balatro.exe (easily found by right-clicking Balatro from your library and selecting “browse local files”) using 7-zip and extract the resources' folder, you can extract the whole thing if you want to, but it's not necessary.

Step 3: Fire up your art program of choice (it has to have built in transparency, so NO MS Paint.) Open both the default sprites you want to change and the mod sprites you want to use in the change, and just start copying and pasting. Keep in mind that there is a 1x and a 2x of most sprites, but you only require the 1x of a given sprite because once you're done editing you can just can resize that image to the resolution of the 2x and nothing is out of place. Also. If you are editing hologram Joker, make the sprite translucent. I saw several artists screw that up. You just need to make the sprite translucent, and it will work like the original hologram Joker does.

Step 4: Take that edited Sprite sheet and re-open the Balatro.exe file as an archive again. Overwrite the default sprites with your edited ones in the archive and close it. Now, Balatro will run with those edited sprites as the default ones.

Music has the same steps, only difference is that you'll need to change the file type to .OGG and you'll want to rename the music file to whatever track you want to replace. (Note that editing music files this way will result in the soundtrack being slowed down for whatever reason. You can compensate for that by presumably speeding the track up in Audacity)

Step 5: You will power up Balatro Mobile Maker and run it. The program should fetch all the tools it needs to run correctly. It will ask permission for various actions several times, just say yes to the most logical choices, fps 30 can be left blank. You can run the executable wherever for the most part (at least for this process it doesn't matter) and it will find your legal copy of Balatro, unpack, format it into an APK compliant format, and then repack the file to be played as an APK. Now you have a version of Balatro that plays with modified textures and music files.

That's pretty good, but what if you want to enjoy all the fun and interesting modded jokers?

Well, first off, you'll need to temper your expectations. Some of the best Balatro mods also completely overhaul how Balatro works, and the Mobile Maker cannot cope with maintaining that functionality with Android. I provided a folder of all the mods I know won't break the game at boot. Whatever happens after that is out of my hands.

Step 1: Delete whatever mods you have already in your Mod folder (excluding Lovely and Steammodded). Go into the lovely folder and delete the files in the dump folder as well.

Step 2: Drop the mods I provided into the mod folder and run Balatro. Assuming you didn't have any issues with the game finding Lovely or Steammodded you should have booted into the main menu with the Mod tab accessible. Play a new game and do a couple hands. Don't worry about winning the round, just play a couple hands so that instance of your game is saved.

Step 3: Run Balatro Mobile Maker. Run it as normal, but when it gets to the part where it asks if you want to transfer save files, leave it alone and Run Balatrofoldersetup.bat. That will copy and move around a bunch of files needed for the Mod Transfer process. Once you clicked that Bat once, go ahead and tell the Mobile Maker to transfer your save file. When it's done, click on Balatrofoldercleanup.bat to turn things back to normal. If you forget to do that, Balatro on your PC won't run. Don't worry. If you forget to do that, clicking on it at anytime will still work as intended.

Step 4: This is the hardest step. Doing Step 1-4 over again because X thing happens.

If your pc is hooked up to your android device and mobile maker is supposed to be installing it on your Android device (and has the permissions to do so) but doesn't install it. Try again. If the App just plain crashes, move the app to a different folder and try again. I hear it works best in folders where the Balatro.exe file actually is, but I alternated between download folder, Balatro Mod folder, and the actual folder that contains the Balatro game files and there was no real difference.

If the save transfer finishes in a couple seconds, it didn't work. You can confirm it by opening the Balatro game and seeing that it's just default Balatro without the Mod tab. If the save transfer process takes several seconds to actually transfer the data, then it's actually legitimately working. If you boot up and see evidence of your previous game progress and the mod tab, you're in! Enjoy it friend!

Addendum:

Yes, I know that people have gotten Jen's Almanac, Pokermon, and especially Cryptid working on Android, I don't like using the Jen and Cryptid mods because they're just insane and exist for the spectacle.

The Vanilla Joker mods dilute the collection of Jokers making the really powerful cards less likely to show up and making really odd niche cards more likely to get in the way, this adds a bit of challenge. Jen and Cryptid having many face roll jokers eliminates that, however.

Also, a lot of overhaul mods require modifying the shader files to get the game working on Android, and I just don't know where to begin fixing that. I tried the patches and they didn't work.

If you know the solution to "error validating vertex shader code: Line 125 error '/': wrong operand types: no operation '' exists that takes a left-hand operand of type ' global highp float' and a right operand of type ' const int (or there is no acceptable conversion)"

Post it on this web zone, I'm not the only one wanting a solution for that, and no one on the Balatro Mobile Maker GitHub had a solution (that worked).

There are other mods I skipped that probably worked but didn't personally want in my pack, so go to Mirahaze and download whatever mod you like and go through the steps I tried. If you boot up the Android app, and it crashes, specifying that some abbreviated file linked to a specific mod was not found or had trouble installing, get rid of the mod. You could fix it, but if you could do that, you probably didn't need my help to begin with.

Our gender clinic is “one of the world’s best” and our interventions to help children with gender dysphoria “adhere to strict clinical governance standards.”

Our treatment guideline has been “peer reviewed at the highest level, published in the Medical Journal of Australia [MJA] and adopted by healthcare providers across Australia and the globe.”

“As a public institution we expect and welcome public scrutiny that is fair, objective and factual.”

Such was the tone of the open letter issued by the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne on 13 December 2019, the year in which international concern about experimental, “gender-affirming” medicine for minors reached Australia.1

But RCH Melbourne has shown little sign of welcoming scrutiny and now, sometime after April 18 this year, its open letter was taken down from the hospital website.

Why?

Was it because psychiatrist Alison Clayton began to ask difficult questions last year about a seeming lack of clinical governance oversight of the RCH gender clinic?

Was it because just two months before this open letter, a hospital governance committee—responsible for ensuring the efficacy and safety of new clinical practice—decided not to approve the radical new treatment model enshrined in the gender clinic’s treatment guideline? (We know this only now because of Dr Clayton’s inquiries.)2

Was it because a startling admission in the version of the RCH guideline published by the MJA led a pioneer of evidence-based medicine, McMaster University’s Professor Gordon Guyatt, to declare the document an “untrustworthy” guide for clinicians?3

Was it because that 2018 RCH guideline, misleadingly badged as “Australian standards of care,” has suffered other blows to its credibility, the most recent being a decision by Australia’s Health Minister Mark Butler to send it off for “a comprehensive review.”

Was it because, unlike the low-quality RCH document, the new guidelines to be developed by the National Health and Medical Research Council will be required to inform clinicians of the (low) quality of the evidence for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones?4

Was it because the best-known global health provider to adopt the RCH guideline is the unguarded activist, Helen Webberley, who is the British co-founder of the online clinic GenderGP?5

Who knows?

Yesterday, I emailed RCH asking if the hospital still stood by its December 2019 open letter. No response, as usual.6

And then I began to find other broken links on the RCH website, other relevant material apparently poked down a “memory hole,” as Orwell would say.7

“A number of The Times [newspaper] which might, because of changes in political alignment, or mistaken prophecies uttered by Big Brother, have been rewritten a dozen times still stood on the files bearing its original date, and no other copy existed to contradict it. Books, also, were recalled and rewritten again and again, and were invariably reissued without any admission that any alteration had been made.” — George Orwell, 1984

A September 2021 news item welcoming a ruling from a newspaper standards body, the Australian Press Council, which partially upheld a complaint by gender clinic director Dr Michelle Telfer against my 2019-20 coverage in The Australian.9

Social contagion

It’s not just RCH that has been spiriting away inconvenient material.10

The Sydney-based Sax Institute, funded by the Health Department of New South Wales (NSW), produced a 2020 gender dysphoria report with the capacity to oscillate between public and hidden status.

It was conveniently hidden when the Hunter New England Local Health District of the NSW department made the false claim that this “independent” Sax report had “found strong evidence for a gender-affirming approach to health care.”

After I wrote about this in March 2023, the Sax report magically reappeared in public mode.11

In mid-2022, New Zealand’s Ministry of Health quietly removed the reassuring phrase “safe and fully reversible” from its website’s promotion of puberty blockers.

Two years earlier, England’s National Health Service had shown the way, abandoning without announcement or explanation its online claim that blockers were “fully reversible.”

Towards the end of last year, the RCH Melbourne gender clinic also deployed a stealth edit to adopt a more defensive position on its website.

Its previous unqualified claim that blockers are “reversible”—a claim taken on faith by Australia’s Family Court in the 2013 case of a 10-year-old seeking puberty suppression—was transformed into the vague assertion that this intervention in normal development is “largely reversible.”

In the US, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) claimed in its current standards of care (SOC-8) that its treatment advice for adolescents was not based on a “gold-standard” systematic review because “the number of studies is still low, and there are few outcome studies that follow youth into adulthood.”

In fact, as part of preparations for SOC-8, WPATH had commissioned more than a dozen systematic reviews on treatment of adolescents and adults from researchers at Johns Hopkins University, presumably expecting positive data.

Court documents show that WPATH sought to suppress the unfavourable results of systematic reviews and to control their presentation and political effect, while requiring the Johns Hopkins researchers to state that WPATH had no influence in the process.12

The press council cited “privacy” when refusing to tell me which groups it had invited to help shape its trans reporting guideline.

In its 2021 ruling on Dr Telfer’s complaint, the council said my reporting had caused her “substantial distress” because my coverage implied that gender medicine was “out of step with mainstream medical opinion.”

It objected to my quoting non-gender experts, such as Carl Heneghan, Oxford University’s professor of evidence-based medicine, to the effect that gender medicine was experimental, so weak was its evidence base. Professor Heneghan’s 2019 review has been amply vindicated.

10 The RCH claim that gender-affirming medicine had been approved “at the highest level” first appeared in an August 2019 statement by the Australian Professional Association for Trans Health (AusPATH).

That statement defending the RCH model failed to disclose that AusPATH’s president, Michelle Telfer, was also director of the RCH gender clinic and first author of the clinic’s 2018 treatment guideline.

Nor was that conflict picked up by the Media Watch program of Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC, which presented the hybrid professional-activist lobby AusPATH as if it were a normal medical college.

Hosting the program on 19 August 2019, Media Watch’s Paul Barry said my newspaper had been “accused of ignoring research. Last week, the professional body representing 250 doctors and workers in gender health, AusPATH, put out a statement condemning The Australian’s gender reporting as biased, emotive and not based on fact.”

Mr Barry also upbraided me for failing to “talk to any transgender children or their parents who could give first-hand experience of what it’s like to feel you’ve been born in the wrong body.”

From Dr Clayton’s work, we know that the following month, the RCH gender clinic would acknowledge the “paucity” of evidence to the hospital’s own clinical governance committee responsible for scrutinising new treatment models.

The AusPATH statement invoked the authority of Australia’s Family Court, saying its judges had “twice reviewed the academic and clinical evidence for medical intervention in [trans, gender-diverse and non-binary] adolescents through [the gender dysphoria cases] re Jamie (2013) and re Kelvin (2017).”

In the 2020 re Imogen case, however, a judge declared that the RCH treatment guideline was misleading clinicians about the law by advising them that “parental consent is not required when the adolescent is considered to be competent to provide informed consent”. After this ruling, the RCH gender clinic corrected the guideline, without any public explanation, and removed past Family Court decisions from its reference list.

Six months later, I noticed that the 2019 AusPATH statement had disappeared from the “news and advocacy” section of its website. I reported this fact, and then the statement resurfaced, albeit with the incorrect date stamp of 1 August 2018.
