Did I mention how much Liira loves her little herd of Yakmel? Of course, Liira enjoys a ride in the tractor she built, but there’s nothing like carefully driving through a pasture of at least a dozen Yakmel that makes her appreciate farming. Raising these cow-like creatures requires time, dedication, and an understanding of the animal and its needs. Liira and Unsuur put hundreds of hours of labor into each animal daily to ensure their health and well-being. Liira loves seeing happy, healthy cattle grazing each summer and watching new Yakmel calves enter the world each winter. Unsuur also loves decorating the Yakmel enclosure with colorful rocks he dug up. The old girls love how quartzes and diamonds sparkle in the light of the sun.
There’s something so soothing about seeing her tiny herd outside her bedroom window and wishing them a good morning. And watching their precious calves bouncing around all day long? Even better!

Could you write slashers with a s/o who’s an artist? You can do with all/any you want but I would specifically like maybe the Sinclairs, Billy Lenz, Brahms and maybe Pinhead?
Slashers x Artist Reader + Pinhead
Tumblr media
Micheal Myers:
•Pretends not to care, but he's an artist at heart
•If you sculpt or blind things he will insist on watching you over your shoulders
•Will steal supplies for you whether you ask or not
•if you Draw or paint, it's going on the fridge or wall
•He truly admires your work

•Billy Suggests You make a lot of gore pieces
•Both of them will go the extra mile to kill models for you, so you have a subject
•Both Jokingly propose to model nude for you

Lester Sinclair:
•pt. 3 of familial bond
•because he didn't receive much attention as a kid, He desperately tried to be an artist to gain favor of his mother

•He focus on the more classical sides of painting and traditional drawing
•He makes stunning portraits, So if you have a different art style it confuses him

•He later learns how much time and care you put into these works and starts to appreciate your dedication
•He also steals some of them to put up in his room
Hannibal Lecter:
•Very excited
•Starts showing off his own private art collection
•Takes it upon himself to teach you “proper technique”
•Gives you random history lessons on your choice of art form

•Okay dude
•Doesn’t really care
•Just happy that you're happy
•Secretly admires your work when you are away
•Always make sure your work is safe and undamaged
The Lost Boys:
•Marko is immediately grinning ear to ear
•David pretends not to care
•Dwayne silently watches you
•Paul is all up in your personal space while you work
•No matter what you make or how proud of it you are, It's going in the horde pile with all their other treasures
•Paul and Marko asking you to draw them all the time
•If you do it's being hung up on the wall
Pinhead:
•Another artist in his own way
•He prefers body modification and rigging as his art form
•Will creepy watch you work from a distance
•He’ll give you polite criticism from time to time
•Seeing you so focused and dedicated makes him think of all the other past artists he's met
•Decides fairly quickly that you are his favorite

How to Build a Fabric Stash without Breaking the Bank
Fabric can be expensive but it doesn’t have to be.  If you are not stuck on Name Brands or Specialty Fabric Store Exclusives here are some ways to build your fabric stash without costing an arm and a leg. I have made many beautiful quilts using various fabrics from various supplies. And I believe that the quality is not just in the fabric you use but also in your stitch work and seams sizes. If your seams are less than a ¼” they will not hold (personally I prefer to use a ½” seam allowance). If you are not securing your thread ends, your stitch work is going to come undone. So be sure to watch these things too.
Look for fabric at your local Thrift Store (Goodwill, Value Village, etc.)
I have found some wonderful fabrics in various sizes, notions, storage items and more at my local Thrift Stores. I have even found unfinished quilt tops that I have brought home and added a backing to then quilted. Remember that almost any size fabric remnant can be added to other remnants to make some wonderful scrappy quilts so save your own remnants after making a quilt, you may be able to use it later in another quilt.
Look for local Fabric Sales held by Quilting Guilds in Your Area.
We have 2 near me every summer. One charges $2 per pound for any fabric. The second one charges $2 per yard for any fabric. Both also sell batting, notions, books, machines, tools, and more.
Look for fabric on Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor and other sites.
I sell extra fabric on Marketplace and Nextdoor. I have also found several ladies near me selling fabric that I have purchased. And some I have purchased with shipping to me.
Look for older 100% Cotton Sheets at your local Thrift Stores.
Back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, Quilts were not show pieces. They were real functional blankets that were made from any and all fabrics they could get, usually used clothing. I think there is no reason why we cannot still do that instead of buying expensive fabrics. I have often used clothing, sheets, curtains, and other linens to make some wonderful, usable quilts. And there are some wonderful patterns you can use for quilts in bedsheets from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Note: I always wash anything from a Thrift Store before I use it.
Watch for Fabric Sales and Coupons for Joanns, Hobby Lobby and other Fabric & Craft Stores.
I know some quilters believe that the fabric from Joanns & Hobby Lobby is poor quality but I have not found any bad fabric from these stores.  We do not have a “Quilting” store close to me and because I’m handicapped, I will not drive an hour or more just to buy expensive fabric.  If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to afford to quilt.  I will also buy fabric from Walmart but I am more careful with my selection there as most fabric at Walmart is good but I have had one or two pieces that I felt were poorer quality.
Watch for Fabric Sales and Coupons for your Local Quilt Shop.
Quilt shops will also have occasional sales and/or coupons so if you prefer to shop at these locations take notice of when they have sales. Also ask if they ever give discounts to seniors or military.
Use New or Older Clothing.
I have made a lot of beautiful Memorial Quilts from a loved one’s clothing and T-Shirt quilts. I will use jeans, work shirts, uniforms, flannel, cotton, polyester and even some knits.  These can be a little trickier to work with because they are often stretchy fabrics but they will add a wonderful texture and visual variance to your quilts.  I recently found a pair of cotton pants with Mickey Mouse on them. I fell in love with them because they were so colorful, and I love bold colors. I found several other cotton fabrics that matched the colors in the Mickey pants and made a bold colorful quilt!
Rethink Your Backing Fabric
No one ever said your quilt backing had to be all New Cotton. You can use Fleece, Flannel or Bed Sheets as well. On many occasions I have found some wonderful fleece blankets on clearance and used these for my quilt backing.  Joanns right now has a great clearance sale on Flannel fabric. The best part about using some of these is that you can get then in a wider width so you may be able to make your backing in all one piece instead of 2 or more like when using regular cotton (unless you want your backing to be in various colors/patterns).  You can also use new or older cotton bed sheets for a quilt backing. Again, you can make your quilt backing in one solid piece with a sheet!
Check the Clearance Section for Your Favorite On-Line Stores
I have several on-lines stores that I love to shop from (e-Quilter, Missouri Star, etc.) but sometimes they can be expensive so I always check the clearance section of these stores. There are times I will find some beautiful fabrics on clearance so will purchase it then look for matching piece everywhere else so I can get the best deals. Also check for on-line sales from Joanns, Hobby Lobby and other on-lines stores that sell fabric and/or sheets.
Check Out Your Local Garage, Moving and Estate Sales
I have found some of the best deals at moving and estate sales because often the seller is willing to bargain with you. I once found an estate sale where a family was selling off all their mother’s quilting and sewing items because she had passed away and none of then sewed. There was more fabric and notions than I would have used in a year so I found lots of thread and items I purchased at a great price.
Note on Batting
I know that many quilters believe that the only batting you should use is expensive cotton batting. I disagree.  There are many forms of batting. Cotton/Poly blends, Polyester, and Fleece. I love cotton batting but cotton will break down quicker than polyester and I want my quilts to last a lifetime so for most of my quilts I actually use Polyester more often than not. I have taken the backing off many older quilts to do repair work and the cotton batting inside was all balled up and a real mess.
Now when I am doing the Quilt-as-you-Go method I use a Fleece batting. The fleece can be cut into smaller pieces, fabric added to the top and then sewn back together to make wonderful quilts. And the batting doesn’t get stuck in my machine.
Shop Around for your batting to find the best deals. Sometimes Joanns has a sale on batting but the best price I have found so far has been Walmart on-line.  I can buy a 96” x 9 yard Bolt of Poly Batting for just $30 on Walmart on-line. This bolt will make 4+ quilts depending on the size of the quilt and I will have lots of left overs for smaller projects like pillows, etc.  For me the best part is that because it’s 96” wide, I don’t have to piece together my batting before I can sandwich my quilt!

Well, this newest camp is drawing to a close. I know I haven't said much about this one, but here's the thing: Long Night is an awful fucking garbage event if you are playing non-farming nomads. It's not so much 'challenging' as it is 'a borderline automatic game over.' You have no plants to forage. You can't graze your animals, which you're dependent on for moving from base to base. You can't make kibble for the animals unless you have plants to make it with, and if you had plants you wouldn't be in this mess. You can get food for your colonists by hunting, but meat won't last long when you're on the move... unless you make it into pemmican or packaged survival meals, which you need plants for.
If there was a geothermal plant on this map, I would have seriously considered setting up a sun lamp just so some small area would be able to grow grass.
So yeah, this camp has mostly been a long tedious slog to keep all the animals alive, with a side of too many raids. On the upside, the kids have... not amazing gear or anything, but they're not going into combat with hand-me-down clothes and garbage weapons anymore.
Since Lewis hit 13, this seems like a good time for an overview of the current state.
Overall
Thanks to the fucking Long Night, the kids have plenty of food, but less than they had when they left the last camp. This was another great climate, so it would've been a good place to stock up before moving on, but instead the supplies have been slowly evaporating. Still, the ship's actually not parked that far north. It'll be sub-tropical or temperate climates the whole way, so the biggest hazard food-wise is going to be areas where it's too dry to grow much.
Not a lot of trade goods left, but with 10k silver saved up, trading goods is kinda optional anyway. They can just buy shit with cash. Now if only anywhere had shit to buy. They'll be making another round of shopping trips on the way out of this area, so here's hoping. This isn't their last chance to buy new gear, but there are only a few opportunities past here. I could have them linger in this area for however long it takes to find quality gear, but that would be 1) boring and 2) probably overkill.
While the ship is expensive, these ruin maps are pretty expensive, too. Dev mode informs me that the current map, in fact, would currently get raids of 950 raid points. The ship shouldn't be too much worse than that--if the kids dump a lot of their unneeded possessions and there aren't fancy ruins around the ship, the ship raids could go as low as 500. So, the fights they're having right now might actually be pretty representative of what they'll need to be capable of handling.
That's all banking on nothing bumping the raid point level a lot higher on that map, though.
I haven't kept things to three pawns for any strong reason. Good candidates have just been hard to find. As Lewis showed, preteens aren't a good fit for this lifestyle. Hussars and Wasters are automatically disqualified, because they're just going to die to a lack of psychoid. I've also only been looking for recruits who are younger than Umeko, which limits it further, and thanks to the nomadic lifestyle, prisoners are only a great option if they capture one early enough to recruit them before they have to pack up camp.
So, just the three kids for now.
Umeko Keith
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now she's great at fighting and construction, the two main things she does. Construction is the big one, really--it's not a full-time job in most colonies, but this group has to build a new base every 20-30 days. She's also the group's de facto crafter, but... crafting isn't quite as important here. Researching something like gunsmithing would be a long-term project. The only things to craft are trade goods and clothes, really. Fortunately, the herd of alpacas and all the hunting for meat means that she has an unlimited supply of leather and wool.
She's got an archotech arm, a bionic leg, and a sterilizing stomach. The sterilizing stomach was an instant buy when I saw it. Umeko and Choco are both good at cooking, so food poisoning is rare, but... the last time it happened, it was an outright existential threat. When you only have three people, two of them being nearly downed by illness is an absolute disaster if anything actually dangerous happens.
Umeko likes both of her companions a lot. This might be the most tight-knit group I've ever had. Umeko and Lewis are pretty much always at 100 relationship in both directions.
Choco, though... Umeko has like a near-paralyzing crush on her. Choco, on the other hand, is straight. Way Better Romance (I think? I don't believe this is core, and I'm not sure what else would do this) seems to make it so sexualities aren't absolute, so while Choco is straight, she's like... an 0.4 on the Kinsey scale. She can conceive of a circumstance in which she might possibly have a relationship with another girl, and thus has like a 1.4% chance of agreeing to romantic things with Umeko. That's good enough for Umeko. She asks Choco on a date at basically every opportunity, and gets politely shot down every single time.
At this point, Umeko's wearing trooper armor and a flak helmet, with a sniper rifle and carbine. Since the group usually doesn't have good defenses set up, having her snipe enemies on the edge of a pack before they attack the base has been vital to continued survival.
Curca Choco
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Choco's taken over cooking duties, and she's the group's default medic. She's also pretty good at killing, and psychopath + masochist is admittedly a really nice combo for that. She doesn't mind hauling the bodies away, and if she gets hurt in combat that only makes her happier.
She also doesn't mind needless killing or violence. I have a policy that when somebody needs to, say, run outside and spray bullets at the cavemen next door until they stop trying to hunt the alpacas for dinner, that's Choco's job. If a bullet goes through one of their eye sockets, she can drag the body off and it's no big deal. Umeko doesn't need to know the dark price of her alpacas' continued safety.
That's true friendship, right there.
With double passion in shooting, I've been setting her up as the main general combatant, so Choco's got recon (!!) armor, a semi-automatic rifle, an assault rifle, and an SMG.
And a... look, the group only had two flak helmets. So instead, Choco wears the next-best head protection we've got.
Tumblr media
A hyperweave bowler hat.
Lewis McLaughlin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For somebody who's been around since he was 4, Lewis's general setup is just sad. He could've easily had 5+ passions in a normal colony, but the nomad lifestyle's hard on a kid. Still, he's good at plants + animals, aka the skills that let them eat, he can shoot well, and he'll be the group's head researcher soon. Plus, with Iron Stomach, two out of the three pawns are immune to food poisoning.
Lewis likes everybody! Choco is 100% neutral on him.
He's got the least impressive combat loadout, with a flak jacket and helmet, a bolt action rifle, and Umeko's starting combat handgun. Good guns have been in short supply.

I am often amazed at the ability of people to wildly misunderstand things.
So, last month my father gave me some cordless power tools. (I had long been resistant because cordless tools in the 80s and 90s were underpowered, expensive, and didn’t work for long).
Now, the thing I noticed is that the drill and impact driver he gave me - Metabo brand - look almost completely identical to all the other similar drills and impact drivers on the market. Not “yes, of course, a drill looks like a drill” but to the extent that if you put them all in a row, covered over the logos, and took a picture in black and white, you’d say they were all the same item. And I’m not alone in noticing this - I came across an article the other day observing it as well, and comparing to benchtop sanders which are also nearly identical. The article didn’t speculate on why but rather was putting forth that brands needed to do more to distinguish themselves lest consumers conclude that brands are meaningless.
Now, my guess is, they’re all being made at the same factory. This happens a lot, you know? Pretty much all laptops are manufactured at the same place, something like 80% of all ballpoint pens use parts made in one small country in Europe, etc. Our supply chain is NOT resilient, and we are often reliant on just one manufacturer.
The other possibility is, there was a significant development which resulted in everyone making the same design. For example, have you notice in the last decade suddenly all over the USA these 4-and-1 condo and apartment buildings started popping up like mushrooms? Turns out this one civil engineer was reading over some building code while on vacation, and realized it would be legal to use pressure-treated lumber instead of metal and concrete, to build apartment buildings so long as they weren’t too tall and had sprinkler systems. This being waaaaay cheaper, that design became wildly popular.
The thing is, figuring out what is going on is not entirely easy. There’s no trade magazine which publishes “And today we’re going to start making identical impact drivers!” or anything like that. Every brand wants to maintain the fiction that their products are Unique and Special rather than being indistinguishable their competitors. They also like to conceal the details of their supply chain - to the extent possible they want to claim it’s all made locally, or “finely crafted German engineering”. So you’ll very seldom find a brand stating outright “Yeah, we buy these from manufacturing plant in Indonesia, they slap our logo and custom ABS mold on the outside, nah, we don’t make them ourselves”.
So, having some vague ideas on what’s going on but not having the ability to run this question to ground, I put the question forth in the hopes that someone else might know:
“Many cordless drills and impact drivers on the market right now look almost identical. Are they all made in the same factory, or using identical parts?“
What I have thus far received is one reply informing me that I’m a complete idiot for thinking that cordless drills and impact drivers look the same because they are entirely different tools which have nothing whatsoever in common. (They are, in fact, very similar both in appearance and function, and it takes closer inspection to tell which is which in almost all cases). And a second response telling me that of course an impact driver and a drill from the same brand will look the same, that’s totally normal.
Neither response seems to have grasped anything relevant about the question. And while I can see how I might have worded it a little differently, I’m honestly frustrated because it just feels like it doesn’t matter how I phrase it, they’re simply not grasping that there’s a question to be asked there and will persistently give answers that don’t apply.

if you feel like it, pls tell me about your crafting journey? first craft fixation? self-taught, learn from family/friends, videos, classes? subsequent enthusiasms? favorites? proud accomplishments? regrets, if any? stuff you crave trying in the future?
I come from a family, namely my mother's side, of artists and crafters, so keep that in mind. Painters, sculptors, wood workers, potters, quilters, all sorts. As such, all art was actively encouraged.
The first crafty thing I can remember was going to ceramics class with my mom. We would pick out statues we like, paint them with glaze and then have them fired again, or paint them with acrylic paint and take them home. I remember making vases and pots out of play-doh, building cities and towers with Lego blocks, paper mache masks with newspaper and balloons.
When I was nine (so in 1992) friendship bracelets suddenly became VERY popular. I saw a girl in class making them, so she showed me how. My mom saw.mw going through her yarn so I could make my own bracelets, so off to the craft store we went. She bought me 1/4" ribbon, cheap yarn, and a boom of patterns. Hyperfixation launched! A couple years later, while visiting my grandparents, my grandma gave me a couple books of macrame patterns. Hyperfixation evolved! I was using ribbon to make these until I discovered hemp when I was 14 years old. I became very picky about my materials when I was 16, and used the crappy hemp for practice or outdoor items. In my 20s, I started vendoring and doing art trades pretty regularly. That's also when I was introduced to cotton cord that looks and behaves like high quality hemp cord, but is super soft. I was nearly 30 when I learned better methods for creating clasps that don't look like a hot mess. A few people asked how I crochet jewelry because that's apparently what it looked like.
I stopped making jewelry in my 30s due to thr loss of a ligament in my right wrist, chronic pain, and burnout. The last time I tried making jewelry was in 2021, and it was like pulling teeth from a rabid tiger. I have since sold all my supplies, patterns, books, tools, and am very happy about it.
In my early 20s, when I was a uninstudent studying to be an art teacher, I took a watercolor class and Fell. In. Love. OMG I looooooooooooove watercolor painting. Unfortunately, all my paint solidified in their tubes years ago, and have since been tossed. My style is very...flow, dreamscape abstract, and big. I dunnonhow best else to describe it. You can purchase prints and other stuff eith my work though! I'm especially proud of thr two paintings at the top of my page here:
Landscapes and extreme closeups are my preference. Georgia O'Keefe is a major influence on my painting style. I miss painting, but good paint is expensive. I have what I like on my wishlist, so feel free to buy it for me.
Folks familiar with my quilts may see how much my previous work has played a role in my style. My family has mentioned more than once they can see macrame and watercolor in my quilts with how I use color and arrange blocks.
I'm semi-self taught. My mom didn't teach me how to quilt. I remember watching her, so applied that, what I learned in videos, and I regularly ask her for input. She's a terrible teacher and has little patience, plus we live nearly 3000 miles apart. I helped handquilt a lot of her quilts when I was growing up, so that part I had down.
I took classes for painting and drawing when I was hs and uni. I used to draw a lot, namely portraits and cityscapes, bit now I can barely hold a pencil for more than a couple minutes before my hand just...can't. Ligament removal has that effect. I can paint without issue though! The straight lines combined with the flow of light and color is so pleasing to me. It's like moss on a brick wall with powerlines casting shades with the colors of the sunset reflecting off windows and onto the surface of puddles. Visual poetry. I love that shit.
I dabble in photography, and will never claim to be a professional. Here's a picture I took in 2016, and it is by and far the best photograph I have ever taken.
You can have that printed on a variety of items available under it. Please click the link and scroll down. I'm still in awe that I managed to take this picture. I was in flip flops and went running outside when my husband hollered about the sunset. Grabbed my camera and ran in flip flops, hit a dip in thr sidewalk, and got a case of road rash on my right leg. Bleeding and in pain, I took that picture, and then cleaned tf outta the wound. I had a bandaid over it for a week, but I'm allergic to the adhesive and ended up with a scar from the bandaid. That thing didn't fade for five years! Anyway...
My hope is to learn how to make my own clothes. I love the super wide leg pants I wore in the 90s through 2003. Legs wide enough to fit a body. I can find them anymore, and hate denim, so I wanna make then using cotton. Namely Hawaiian floral prints. Big, bold, loud. Fuck, yes! I need to take a class or two though. I'm the sort that needs their hand held for the first few lessons, but once I understand it...well, y'all have see my work. I also intend to learn applique and thread painting over the next couple years. My ultimate goal is to create a series of mini quilts with portraits of all the Dragon Age companions, foundation paper piecing patterns with symbols from the skill/talent trees in all three DA games, a Dune quilt (I'm a huge fan of the book series, love the mini series, the original film is a lesson in How to Fail, give the recent first film 7/10 stats, and can't see part two until it's on disc because epilepsy is a bitch), paint the bedroom to look like a forest with the ceiling looking like the arm of the milky way and tree branches, and make my own wardrobe packed with prints and colors.
Thank you for asking!

Okay but what happens if August is taking an interest in your crochet hobbie?
🤩🤩🤩🤩 omg omg yes! I may have gotten a little carried away with this 😅
When he first saw you crocheting he didnt know what to think. You looked like you were tying knots with a stick, but he didnt want to interfere youd show him what you were up to eventually.
What ever you were doing kept you quiet and happy. Plus it was cute watching you poke your tongue out when you were concentrating.
A few hour later you were infront of him bouncing excitedly and popped a tiny ball on his desk.
It wasnt untill he really looked he saw it had a little face on it, with a tash
You called it a stress ball and were over the moon with your creation. It was a little messy clearly the work of a beginner but he was touched. And it instantly became a fixture on his desk.
After watching you slowly make more and more tiny projects he decided he liked this little hobby of yours. It was both creative and usefull. Especially when you made your little wrist warmer.
Within a week he was an expert. He knew the difference between a boye hook or susan bates. He also knew the types of handles, swing hoom, comfort grip, long shaft everyrhing!
He had scared the hell out of the lady in the shop for even daring to suggest some $3.49 beginners metal hooks for his baby girl. He'd been so mad that he dropped all the things hexd picked out on the floor infront of her and walked out before he started cussing her out.
That shop had shut down now, tax evasion apparently.
Insead he'd gone online and ordered you the top of the line custom cherry wood, turned hooks with your name engraved on them, he also splashed out getting an insane amount of yarns and little wool crafting supplies.
He even spent a good few hours of reserach on the difference between chenille sharp needles and darning neesdles. In the end he got both
He would buy super expensive yarns for you to use, and began building you a little craft room.
He also bought up every cute stuffy pattern book he could find. And insisted you use the exact matching yarns and colours.
He would 100% help you when you have to rewind a skien of yarn because you got it in knots.... and then got you a wool winder.
9/10 he will have you next to him when he is home. Every single room has a big basket of yarn, a set of hooks scissors and stitch markers for you to make something.
The day you found chenille yarn was an expensive day for august. But he didnt care you were over the moon. He'd never realised how much some fluffy yarn could mean to you.
He was proud of you when you began making the bigger toys and overcome issues with the safety eyes. Youd gotten a mini pink gluegun and stuck the pieces together.
And the chenille didnt blister your fingers like the other coarse yarn! So you could crochet all day every day if you wanted to!
He quickly began his own collection of mini stuffies in his office and is constantly stealing more from your completed projects. Just because he likes having a timeline of your progress.
He adors the fact you have a hobby away from technology. Something about his babydoll reviving an old craft made him proud.
He even let you try to teach him a few stitches but for the life of him he couldn't get the hang of it. And dont even mention the whole pattern thing. Just no.
He makes requests, new gloves, a pair of slippers, hat scarf. Anything he can think of that you could make for him. He loves how excited you get when your making something he wants.
I think he'd start instilling no tech days. Twice a week there woudl be no screens or phones. Just him reading out loud as you crochet next to him.
When you finally ran out of room for your dolls he'd suggest you sell them online.
You werent sure at first but after the first two sell your over the moon. Youd never know he had been promoting your stuff to some of the women in the office.
Before you know it your his little business baby. Running a tiny stuffie empire making your cute toys and selling them online. Youd even gone into the rattle business~
Yes he had gotten you one of those big leather 'boss chairs' in pink for your craft room. And no he didnt regret it you looked adorable in it.
August absolutly adores your hobby, and is completely supportive of his tiny baby dolls shop.
Others might frown on him encouraging in your yarn hording but he didnt care. He'd much rather you be addicted to fluffly skiens of yarn, then alchol.

Title: Oh Honey Honey ('Oh Sugar Sugar' Part 2) (Yandere L Lawliet x Reader)
Title: Oh Honey Honey ('Oh Sugar Sugar' Part 2) (Yandere L Lawliet x Reader)
Synopsis: The newest regular to frequent your little pastry shop is a little unusual, but his appreciation of your craft is a welcome distraction from the terrifying suspicion that you may have a stalker.
notes: yandere, stalker behavior
Tumblr media
You waved cheerfully at a little boy through the glass window of your store, as his grandfather gently urged him along the street; he was maybe 2 or 3, and had practically shrieked in joy when his grandfather bought him the biggest, cutest looking cupcake you'd had in the display that morning.
With the store empty for the moment, you turned back to your daily specialty case and decided to give it a quick cleaning. A regular, the older gentlemen who'd recently revealed that all the treats were actually for an associate, was due to arrive soon, and he typically bought up most of your special case. You leaned over the front counter, grabbed a rag and a bottle of cleaning solution, and gave the glass a quick spritz. You were humming to yourself when you heard the door bells jingling.
You turned, smile ready, expecting the older gentlemen--and almost flinched in surprise. It was not your regular, but someone new. He had lanky dark hair and wore an unassuming, casual outfit consisting of a white shirt and jeans.
You swiftly stepped behind the register. “Can I help you today, sir?”
"Yes, in fact," the man said. "I'm here to give my compliments in person."
Confusion must have registered on your face, for he continued. "I normally have an associate buy my pastries for me. But I wanted to see your shop for myself, so..."
"Oh!"
You hadn't meant to say it out loud, but you couldn't help it; nor could you help the more genuine smile that you gave the man who'd bought hundreds of dollars worth of pastries in such a short time period. Baking was your passion--but it was your business, too, and you couldn't help but truly appreciate people who supported that business. "I'm so glad to finally meet you! Thank you for all your business."
You held out your hand jovially, and the man came forward to accept it with a low, firm and slightly awkward handshake. When he pulled away, he glanced at his hand for a moment, before returning his gaze back to you. You couldn't help but hope he was getting enough sleep.
"I should be thanking you," he said. "For all the pastries, I mean."
At that, you beamed. "Well! Let me show you what's in our special case today..."
**
You had a stalker. Well, maybe you had a stalker. You weren't quite sure. All you knew for sure was that something was... off, lately. At first, you attributed it to getting less sleep than normal. With your bakery busier than ever, thanks to your new regular and even a nice business contract supply 2 dozen breakfast muffins every morning, you weren't getting as much sleep.
So it would only be normal, you thought, to be a little on edge. A little testy. But less sleep didn't account for the odd, creeping feeling that you were being watched, especially at night. You could have swore you heard strange sounds, too... whirring or clicks. Cameras? You didn't know.
Nor did a lack of sleep account for some things that had gone missing from your apartment. A favorite nightgown you liked to sleep in; a favorite mug. the berry-red one you’d gotten two Christmases ago; even, as you discovered one morning, a lingerie set that you'd tried on once and then been too embarrassed to wear again. Still, it was expensive and the thought that someone had taken it--and why someone would take it--made you feel sick.
To say that you were not your usual chipper self for the rest of the morning was an understatement. You did your best to smile for the customers that came in, but even they must have sensed something was wrong; you even got extra tips from a regular, an elderly woman who tut-tutted you and told you that you should consider taking a weekend off.
The thought was tempting, but you knew that with running a small business came sacrifices--including the inability to just "take off." Still, you thought, you could take a little nap. A short one, 25 minutes, tops. You didn't often temporarily close up shop for breaks, but it was quiet and you weren't likely to get too many sales before the lunch rush, anyway.
As you were about to flip the sign, however, a figure suddenly walked up to the door. You jumped, then internally scolded yourself for being ridiculous--it was just your regular, or "Ahh, Mr. Regular?," as he'd awkwardly suggested you call him when you’d asked for his name. It was odd, but, the man was also downing an exceptional amount of sugar while buying up entire cases worth of your goods on the regular, so it wasn't your place to judge.
You bit your cheek to suppress a sigh of frustration and opened the door, stepping back so he could come in.
"Oh," he said, "are you closing?"
You smiled, or tried to smile, but it looked more like a grimace than anything resembling your typical sweet countenance. "No, no, I was just going to close up for a nap... I mean a break." You shook your head. You shouldn't bother customers with talks about naps, it probably made you sound lazy.
He quirked his head slightly, staring at you almost intensely. "Yes..." he said softly, almost murmuring. "I see those circles under your eyes... you haven't been sleeping well."
The personal turn of the conversation made you feel awkward. You looked away, embarrassed. You hated the idea of customers seeing you as anything other than the cheery pastry shop lady, a source of sugar and sweetness and delicious goodies. "Um," you said, "I guess not, I've just been a little, you know--out of it. You know how things go."
You laughed, mirthless and empty, and gestured towards the case. "So, anyway. I actually don't have many special pastries today, I've been a little busy." You mentally slapped yourself for giving excuses, even bland ones, though it wasn't like you were lying.
You'd woken up early so you could head into work and finish off some really nice specialty items you'd baked last night, but rummaging around your drawers for something to wear led you to realize the lingerie was missing, and you'd spent 2 hours drifting between panic and disgust.
But rather than walk towards the case and pick out today's purchases, your regular simply stood in front of you. Head slightly quirked still, eyes expressive--concerned, you thought, he looks concerned about me.
You couldn't deny that a customer worrying about you brought up conflicting emotions; frustration, because you didn't want to mess with your public persona; and a warm mixture of comfort and flattery. Someone liked your pastries enough to care about you.
"Is everything all right?" He said, finally. "Are you feeling sick? Or is something else keeping you up?"
You stared, feeling lost for words. You didn't really know him, and you hadn’t even told your friends about your potential stalker. But the weight of the past few weeks, the build-up of fear and disgust and stress, seemed to push you down until you found yourself sliding into one of your cafe chairs. He followed suit, pulling his knees up until he practically crouched on the seat.
You hesitated. Should you really be telling him any of this? “I… don’t want to bother you with any of my personal problems.”
“It’s not bothering me. I’m curious,” he said, lightly.
You sighed. Here goes, you thought. “I… I have a stalker?” Your hesitancy quickly morphed into an awkward blurting. “I mean, I think I do. I’m not sure. It’s just the past few weeks. I keep hearing these weird noises. And I feel like I’m being watched.” You bit your lip. “And someone took my underpants?”
Actually vocalizing the thought made you realize that it could just all be in your head. I mean, whirring noises? Missing lingerie? Maybe there were ants in the walls and you’d donated the set and forgot about it.
You half expected him to look embarrassed and give an excuse to leave. But instead, he looked thoughtfully at you. “Hmm. Have you called the police?”
It was you who felt embarrassed now. “No…” You shrugged. “I mean, what can they do, anyway? I don’t have any proof.”
He regarded you with a grim nod. “That’s true. They won’t act without evidence.” He gave a little huffy sigh of his own. “Well… if it were up to me, I’d do a stake out. See if anyone comes into your place at night. I could get some equipment, if you want.”
You smiled--subtle and soft, but a genuine smile. At least he didn’t think you were crazy. At least he validated your feelings. And he’d offered to help, even if you would never feel comfortable taking him up on that offer.
“I appreciate it,” you said. “But maybe I’m just being paranoid. I don’t want to drag you into all this…” You sat up straighter and decided to change the subject--you’d had enough worrying about a stalker for one day. “Say, do you want to see the kitchen? I need to finish up a cake I started last night, for the special case. Maybe you can pick out the fruit toppings?”
For a moment, your regular looked shocked.  He nodded, slowly. His expression never quite fully recovered its normal neutrality, and he stood up almost cautiously before following your lead into the open kitchen door accessed from behind the counter.
“Sorry for the mess,” you say lightly. “I didn’t have time to start dishes yet.” You gestured towards a countertop where a small cake stuffed with mascarpone and nestled within a layer of marzipan sat. There were little dollops of cream forming a circle on the top of the cake. “I’m going to top it with some fruits, why don’t you pick out which ones you like?” You covered your mouth, suddenly. “I mean--if you want to buy it, I shouldn’t have assumed.”
He cleared his throat and a small smile flickered across his lips. “Of course I’ll buy it. Your cakes are delicious.”
You laughed a little, showing your teeth, and took out some little jars of fresh fruits from a small fridge underneath the counter. As he looked over them, you turned and began tossing a few empty pots, pans and stirrers into the sink so that they could soak. You couldn’t help but hum a little, used to singing while you clean.
“Yes, I’ve decided,” he said suddenly. You turned around and saw him staring right at you.
“Decided?” You asked. Something about the way he was looking at you felt familiar. You thought about whirring.
“On strawberries,” he replied. He slowly held up the bowl of freshly cut, ripe red berries. “For my cake.”
**
L sat, crouched on the couch, staring at the video he’d taken of today’s events. You confided in him, which was delightful. You’d smiled at him, which was even better. Watching you put the glorious finishing touches on a scrumptious pastry in the kitchen was just... well. Icing on the cake.
He pressed a button on the controller and rewound the video to the moment where you'd laughed, light and airy and perfectly melodious to his ears. Your smile was genuine, then--not the constrained smile you'd given when he'd interrupted your nap plans; nor was it the sometimes plastic smile you wore when you were clearly exhausted with giving endlessly bright customer service.
Your real smile was something to be treasured. Especially, he thought to himself, because it will be a long while before he sees it again. You won’t be smiling much after he kidnaps you--after he acquires you, he corrected himself.
According to his calculations, you won't start feeling more accepting of your situation for at least a few months, but it may be sooner (or later) depending on certain variables. You will be scared first, he knew--scared and maybe angry with him for deceiving you and trapping you. And that wouldn’t be very conducive to the smile and laughter he’d quickly become addicted to taking in.
He lifted up your favorite mug and took a sip of the warm coffee inside, relishing the last bits of your lipstick left on the rim, before rewinding the video to watch you again. Time will heal your wounds--but in the mean time, he will be so very generous and patient with you.

Early Game Tip/Guide for Stardew Valley
A friend of mine has been having trouble with the EARLY early game, so I wanted to help them out. This’ll cover the very early game, and then I’ll cover some tips for the FULL first year. I’ll be putting the whole thing under a read more so it isn’t cluttering ppl’s dashboards.
I’ll have a general idea of what to do the first 3 days or so, and then move to general tips/year 1 tips!
If this gets good reception, I might do other guides if people need them! Just ask and ye might receive sfdgfhfsdgfs.
I’ll also update this if I remember something else or get an idea from someone!
Day 1
First thing, of course, is get your parsnips planted and watered. Go to Pierre’s afterwards. With your 500g, buy 3 green beans, 3 potatoes, and 2 cauliflower. While cauliflower, overall, sells for more, invest in POTATOES in your first spring. You’ll sometimes get an extra potato when you harvest them, so you can get more money overall.
Make sure to get 50 wood for a chest as well. Put your extra tools away that you aren’t using for extra storage space.
After those are planted, go to the south (Cindersap Forest, where Marnie’s Ranch and Leah’s cabin are located). Go ALL the way south to the sewer exit at the bottom right of the area, over two small bridges connected by a tiny island with a single maple tree on it. The area down south will sometimes spawn spring onions. Check this area every day in spring in your first year. Spring onions don’t give you MUCH energy, but it’ll still be good in the long run.
Chop down as many trees as you can or pick up any foragables you see (check the beach as well for foragable shells) to try and reach level 1 foraging. Once you reach level 1, you can get tree seeds- acorns, pinecones, and maple seeds- and can craft field snacks.
Do NOT chop down the tree stumps right now unless they’re in the way! Tree stumps still spawn tree seeds, and chopping down stumps do NOT give you foraging experience! Only chopping the tops of the trees give you experience!
Check ALL the trash cans (just make sure a villager doesn’t see you bc they hate it), because sometimes food items or algae/seaweed pop out.
Don’t be afraid to eat foragables like dandelions, leeks, and horseradishes as well for energy.
Overall, if you can’t get enough energy-restoring items, don’t be afraid to go to bed early day 1.
Day 2
If you didn’t do it yesterday due to energy, go around your farm and scythe ALL the weeds/fiber you can. Sometimes they drop mixed seeds. Mixed seeds are random seeds you can plant. They’ll either give you parsnips, potatoes, or cauliflower seeds. But that means free seeds to plant! Easy profit. DO NOT CUT DOWN ALL YOUR TALL GRASS.
Willy will send you a letter. Go get the fishing rod, and fish in the ocean outside of Willy’s shop. Sell him any fish you get directly until about 2 pm or so, then go to Pierre’s with your new funds and get more seeds. Ideally potatoes, but if you wanna get a head start on an achievement, buy one or two of every seed- except fruit trees. You’ll need to sell one of every crop eventually. But you don’t have to worry about it right now if you don’t want to- you’ll have many more springs to come.
Check down south for spring onions. If you have level 1 foraging by now and can get tree seeds, shake the trees as you pass by. You get them more often by chopping them down, but shaking the trees can yield tree seeds for field snacks.
Spend today fishing, after that! Fish makes good money, and if you’re REALLY in a pinch you can eat the fish straight out of the ocean/river/lake. Or any seaweed/algae you fish up. Sometimes you’ll also fish up Joja Cola- a trash item you can consume for a little energy.
Day 3
It’s raining today, so you do NOT have to water! It always rains on Spring 3. If you’ve gotten money from fishing again after your initial stint, buy more seeds- you don’t need to plant them right away if the idea of all the watering is daunting, you can save them for when your first harvest is done and you need to replant.
If it’s a good luck day, spend the day clearing out your farm area around where you’re planting. Good luck days are the best for chopping trees because you’ll get more wood than on bad luck days.
If it’s a neutral or bad luck day, go fishing! You might fish up trash more often, but you’ll still be getting fish to sell! You can either ocean fish and sell to Willy directly, OR try at the mountain lake next to Robin’s house. Largemouth Bass are GOOD money early game.
No matter what you do, remember to check for spring onions!
General Early Game Tips
Check the tv EVERY day! It’ll give you tips, recipes, and you can check your daily luck and the next day’s forecast.
Build a Silo BEFORE building a coop or a barn! You’ll get a quest to build a coop after your first harvest. Do NOT do it right away. Get a SILO first, and then scythe up any grass on your farm! Don’t scythe all your grass (the tall grass, not the weeds that give you fiber/seeds) before you get a silo, because hay from Marnie is expensive at 50g per piece of hay.
Advanced tip for the previous one: Build ONE silo, and put a chest next to the silo. Use the empty barn/coop once you have it to grab ALL the hay from your silo and place it in the chest. Continue to scythe your grass and get hay, repeating the emptying process until all your grass is gone. That way you have a stock of hay before you get animals.
Once you have a steady supply of food and the mines are open, go to the mines as OFTEN as possible. If the day is neutral, good, or great luck, go mining! You’ll wanna get a head start on resources, and selling gems is good early game.
Wait for a rainy day to upgrade your watering can! Upgrading your tools takes two days: the day you give it to him, and the day after. Check the tv for when the next day is raining, and THEN upgrade your can.
Do NOT build the first sprinklers you get. Once you reach level 2 farming, you unlock the sprinkler crafting recipe. The basic sprinkler only waters 4 spaces, and it is a WASTE of copper and iron. Wait for the quality sprinkler recipe at level 6. It’s tedious to water, I know, but the quality sprinkler waters the 8 surrounding tiles vs the basic’s 4. A better use of materials.
Keep at least 1 to 5 of everything! You may end up with a lot of chests, but keeping a lot of things is REALLY handy. You’ll get little fetch quests from the bulletin board outside of Pierre’s shop often, and keeping a backlog of items helps with completing them- which gets you money and friendship points with the villager in question. This includes crops, fish, and mining materials like quartz and gems. I’d also advise keeping minerals from geodes after donating one of them to Gunther, as some are good gifts while others are used for fish pond requests.
Don’t forget animal tools! Marnie sells a bucket for milking cows, shears for shearing sheep, and heaters for your barns/coops! It gets real cold in winter, so animals need a heater placed in their respective buildings. Put one in every animal building you have- you only need one, don’t worry!
Make wild seeds! Wild seeds produce foragables for their respective seasons. Sell the spring, summer, and fall seed packets instead of growing them. The spring, summer, and fall wild seed packets sell for MORE than if you grew the seeds and sold the foragable items. Do NOT sell the winter seed packets!
General Year 1 Tips
Try and get level 4 foraging before Spring 15! You’ll get a passive perk that just says “+1 Berry harvesting”. From Spring 15 to 18, there are salmonberries in the bushes around Pelican Town. Whether you have level 4 foraging or not, collect these berries! It’ll help a LOT if you get two per bush, but if you check every single day you’ll get a lot of berries no matter what your foraging level is. They don’t give a LOT of energy/health, but because of the quantity you’ll get you’ll be fine.
Fish at the mountain lake when you have downtime! Largemouth bass are VERY valuable early game, if a bit tricky to catch.
Use low profit crops for energy! If you have extra parsnips from spring, you can either turn them into pickles later or keep them for energy/health.
Mushrooms or Bats! After a certain amount of profit is obtained, Demetrius will come to you and ask to use your farm’s little cave for an experiment. He’ll ask to either use it to cultivate mushrooms or invite a species of fruit bat to the cave. Mushrooms are produced every day, and you’ll get a random assortment of every mushroom species available (although their rarity plays a factor in how often they appear). Fruit bats leave you a slow supply of fruit- usually foraged berries, but sometimes fruit tree fruit as well such as apples, oranges, and cherries. Mushrooms are generally more valuable and common mushrooms provide good energy, while fruit bats are good for artisan goods and for gifts as fruit tree fruits are universally liked by everyone.
In your first summer, invest in Blueberries! In your first fall, invest in Cranberries! Both blueberries and cranberries give multiple harvests, and multiple berries per harvest. That means they’ll keep producing AND give you 3 berries per harvest. While the melon and pumpkin sell for more, you can get a few hundred berries within one season- upwards of a thousand if you plant a Lot like I do.
In the beginning of summer, you’ll unlock the bath house. The bath house is a hot spring building to the north in the mountains, initially blocked by boulders. You can sit in the water to regain energy!
Plant tree seeds outside of the bath house area. ALL the dirt around the bath house can have tree seeds planted. You’ll most likely get a bunch of pinecones, as there’s an abundance of pine trees both on your farm and in Cindersap Forest. Plant as many as you can, and let them grow to make a wood farm. I can get a full stack of wood because of how many trees you can plant.
Save some crops to sell at the END of a season! If you’re hurting for money, split your current harvest in half if you can and sell half. Put the other half away in a chest (preferably next to the shipping bin) to save for the final day in the season. That way you can be SURE you’ll have a decent amount to spend at the beginning of the next season.
Work on preserves jars and kegs asap, once you unlock their recipes. Preserves jars make jelly (from fruit), pickles (from veggies), aged roe (from fish eggs), and caviar (from sturgeon eggs). Kegs make wine (from fruit), beer (wheat), pale ale (hops), juice (veggies), and mead (honey). Buy some hops in summer and save them for when you get kegs! Hops also produce EVERY day, so be prepared for a backlog of hops!
Try and get animals in summer! Save spring for bolstering your wallet and equipment. Don’t worry about upgrading your coop/barn all the way right now, just get started on animals because animal products are very good your first year.
Upgrade things in winter! This can mean tools, or buildings! By winter you should have a GOOD bit of money and resources. Upgrade your tools as much as you can (you can do a lot of mining for ore in winter), and upgrade any coops/barns you have. You don’t HAVE to upgrade your house yet if you don’t want to/don’t plan on getting married anytime soon so, as you should have salmonberries still if you managed to collect a lot,  cooking isn’t a necessity. Mushrooms from the cave or fruit from the bats could also help here.
Buy animals in winter! If you can upgrade your coop/barn, get animals now while they don’t need to go outside. It’s a good idea to get pigs now if you can, as they take a long time to grow. That way they can come out fully grown and ready to get you truffles.
Winter seeds are good money! Every few levels, you’ll be able to craft wild seeds for each respective season. The winter seeds sell for more than just their packets alone, so grow them if you can! You can multiply the crop each time you harvest them most likely, so you can make a lot of money off of the foragables.
Mine and fish! Since you don’t have too much to do in winter, use the time to fish and mine for extra money and resources!

A Bit Carried Away
Gender Neutral Reader
Summary: Being excited in an art store with Thoma. Only went in with a few things, left with way too much. Modern Au. Can be read as platonic or dating.
Words: 582
AN: This is the first thing I’ve written with the new laptop. I don’t have to worry about my laptop not charging while I do anything now. It’s great! Figured I might as well learn how I want to write for Thoma in between working on all of my WIPs I had to pause on either because of class or the dead laptop. I got a few ideas for Thoma but they’ve all been on the short side. I’m sure they’ll get longer one day. At least short-form content is always fun. This is also first in works I’ve started building up have posted now that the semester is over. Which also means this note is partially out of date but oh well
Going out shopping with Thoma usually met sticking to the list and not buying something that wasn’t needed
There were a few occasions where this rule was broken but the place that had Thoma breaking this rule more often was in craft stores
If he brought a friend with him to go shopping with he could usually contain himself
Once Y/N was part of his life, just picking yarn to make a gift for a friend could be dangerous
Thoma used to think having the same hobby with someone you’re close to would be great until he saw the receipt on the first trip
It wasn’t entirely Y/N’s price for the high price tag, He threw a lot in the basket too
It was just so easy to get caught up in the idea of getting supplies to work on a project together whether it be the same one as a team or having similar projects that could be worked on simultaneously
So when the afternoon came where he asked if Y/N wanted to come it him to pick up some yarn cause he ran out, he should have known what would have happened
“How does this fabric look?” Y/N asked holding up a bolt of a knit fabric. “Wouldn’t it make such a pretty loungewear set?”
Thoma looked up from his phone where he was already scanning for more coupons. “That could make a nice two-tone set.” He felt the fabric. “It’s a bit thin for the fall a winter though.”
“I know. There’s nothing wrong with it just being a set for indoors, especially since there are so many blankets around the house.” They reasoned.
“Hey! It’s not like you didn’t make any of them either.”
“You have a whole bunch of yarn in the basket right now to make two more.”
“I didn’t know what to get Ayaka and Ayato for the holidays. You can’t go wrong with a nice blanket for a gift.” Thoma defended only to be met with a laugh.
With Y/N running around in the fabric section, he couldn’t help but add more fabric into the basket
Then there were the things they could also use more like elastic, zippers, and buttons
And if they were already getting fabric, Thoma might as well look at the remnants from the bolts. It tended to be the perfect place to find a fabric you could try something new with
The two of them probably could stay in the store for hours if it wasn’t for a growling stomach to remind them they still had to make and eat dinner
Which left them with the most dreadful part of their trip, the checkout line
The wait in line was never too bad, it really was just about being kicked in the face with how expensive hobbies were
Hobbies are like a trick
A ball of yarn could be only 144 Mora but that could add up so quickly under your nose
And with every item scanned, the price went up
Coupons brought it down but not as much as one could hope
There was a mutual look between Y/N and Thoma of ‘we need to stop shopping here together’
It was fun but at that cost
The worst part was despite how many times this would happen, it was bound to happen again.
There wasn’t much that could stop these trips from costing so much well besides not shopping together
But where would the fun be in that?

I was reading about mediveal horses in fantasy and how they’re unrealistic. And usually the horses were avarge. But isn’t a shire horse origin in 1066-Ish? Could that be used in a mediveal fantasy?
It could be, but you might want to do some research to know what those shire horses were actually used for, and what they weren’t.  Horses were not owned by everyone, and were not put to the plow for a long time.  Why not?  Because horses were more expensive than oxen.
An ox is nothing more than a castrated bull that’s been trained to pull a plow, a wagon, etc, and if you have cows for milk and dairy and beef, you’d want to keep most of the females, but not keep most of the males--not as bulls, because your cattle would be goring each other.  So any male cattle born would be assessed for qualities, and either kept for stud (only 1-2 on a farm, IF you have the room to keep a bull separate from the cows), slaughtered for beef, or castrated and trained to be a work animal.
Cows will drop a fairly equal ratio of the genders, but female cattle produce milk, making them valuable to keep around and keep fed.  Horses...well, Mongols might milk mares, but that really wasn’t an European thing, which is what a lot of fantasy (talking about the stuff written in English, here) is based upon.  And mares don’t produce nearly as much milk as cows do.  So economically, it makes more sense to keep cattle around and put them to work in the earlier medieval periods.
Shire horses are huge because they are meant for pulling plows and wagons (their solid hooves don’t break up the rows and the soil nearly as much as the split hooves of cattle).  They’re not usually trained to carry armored warriors into battle, etc.  Medievally, there were horses trained for specific tasks, like the smooth-gaited riding palfrey.  It was not a specific breed of horse, instead being picked for its temperament and trained in its movements.  While certain knights did have big destriers to ride...the majority of mounted warriors actually rode smaller horses, like rounceys and coursers.
And of course, the mule is often overlooked.  This hybrid between a donkey and a mare was the “workhorse” of medieval life, if it wasn’t oxen.  They could carry a lot more weight, were more intelligent, and ate less (or at least didn’t have to eat as much quality food in winter), making them inexpensive to keep.  There might have been mules trained for warfare, for scouting, and certainly for “blending in” when spying on a neighboring region.  Just go in as a trader or traveler with your packs on your mule, and people won’t think twice.
Additionally, you might want to research when stirrups were invented and used--Roman cavalry did not have stirrups, because while they were invented in BCE Asia, they didn’t reach Europe until some time after the collapse of the Roman Empire.
...As you can see, using a shire horse for something in your story in a way that your equestrian-knowledgeable readers won’t go “...wtf??” over can require a bit of educational effort.  Presuming this is a fantasy set in a created world and not an historical real-world setting, you can get away with many things...but if there’s one thing to take away from all of this, understand that shire horses are BIG, and will need to EAT.  Lotta pounds on that thar horse!
And they’re not a bicycle.  Your character cannot just get off their steed and go inside a house for the night.  That horse must be given water, and a rubdown, the saddle needs to be removed to prevent galling and sores and scarring from those saddle sores, they need to have adequate food of the right quality--shire horses are big, so they need a lot of calories, but you cannot give a horse nothing but grain, however high-calorie that feed may be.  They need fiber from grasses and hay--they do not eat straw, which is calorically and nutritionally deficient!--they may even need tree browse (yes, horses and cattle will eat leaves, not just grasses), and sometimes you’ll want to feed them fruit, but not always.
Also, sugar cubes are very much an Industrial Revolution thing, because the cubes are made via complex machinery.  Sugar lumps are what you’d serve medievally...but you’d probably not give pure sugar to a horse, because sugar is expensive in a medieval setting.  Honey drizzled over dried fruit slices would be a more likely treat, and you’d certainly feed your horse (or donkey, mule, etc) the core from your apple or your pear.
Additionally, horses are herd animals.  They need companions around them or they become distressed from anxiety and nervousness, not having other sets of eyes and ears to help watch out for danger.  This doesn’t have to be another horse...though it should be, on a farm.  There are companion animals that are goats and mules and donkeys, and I’ve even heard of dogs and cats--yes, housecats, or more properly, barncats--being companion animals to horses.
Consider your characters’ socio-economic backgrounds before assigning them a shire horse, make sure they treat that horse as a living being in need of care and not like a bicycle that can be easily set aside and forgotten about, and decide if what you need is a really big horse (because sometimes you do!) or if something smaller or faster or whatever might serve your story better.
And lastly, horses cannot gallop for more than a few minutes.  Galloping is sprinting.  Not even Usain Bolt can sprint for more than a few minutes!  Cantering is also not something that can be maintained 24/7, or even for an entire hour.  Horses need to be ridden at the walk, the amble, and/or the trot as much or more often as at the canter, especially when burdened with armor, gear, rider, etc.
Humans can out-distance horses over the long run.
We are pursuit predators.  While horses and dogs can outrun us in a sprint, we can literally walk other animals to death.  Wolves can almost keep up with a reasonably fit human who is used to walking everywhere (which is your basic medieval traveler)...but even though wolves are pros at long-distance travel, they still have to stop and rest more frequently, and horses far more frequently still.  Horses give us the advantage of short bursts of higher speed, and the ability to carry or (even better yet) pull far more weight in supplies, etc, than we can haul ourselves...but they cannot run forever.
If your human has enough of a head start that can negate the sprinting capacity of a horse, and if there is enough underbrush to just barely admit a human to pass through it, but not a horse, a human on foot can escape from mounted people pursuing them.
...All of this is just scratching the surface of writing realistic horses in fantasy, and I am not an expert by any means.  (I have, however, listened to many, and done my own research.)  So...go chat with equestrians, ask them questions, look up resources online, and ask yourself some questions.
How would this character have/afford a shire horse?  How would they train this horse?  What uses would they have for this horse? How do they take care of the horse?  What equipment do they carry for taking care of the horse, riding, etc?  What companion animals does the horse get to have? What are their plans for recovering the horse if it spooks and runs off?  How much does the horse consider the character a friend and/or herd-member?
Yes, you could ignore all these questions and just have the horse around when it’s convenient and vanish it when it’s inconvenient...but unless it’s like an enchanted bridle or a brooch, a ring, a summoning statuette, whatever, imbued with the spirit of a faithful steed (fantasy writing is great for this stuff)...you’re going to need to thing about these sorts of things if you want to have your horses in your fantasy setting be realistic enough that the equestrian community won’t *facepalm heavysigh* any time they read a scene in your story with an equine.
The “enchanted bridle” thing is how I pretend my characters in World of Warcraft don’t have to worry about actually housing, feeding, etc, their steeds, and it’s how they can ride or fly all day without tiring because it’s not a living being, it’s an enchantment full of magic.  BUT, if you’re going to go this route because it’s easier...you’ll still need to consider, how did your character acquire this enchanted object?  How could they afford it? Did they make it themselves? Or did they find it, or steal it?  How is it powered?  Does it have a limit to how much it can be used in a day, or summoned and dismissed and resummoned?  Does it require a set period of waiting time between being dismissed and being resummoned?
Is there a chance of this enchanted item breaking?  Remember, it doesn’t have to break at the worst moment in the story; it could break earlier, when they have time to fix or replace it...but do they have the resources to fix or replace it?  Not just in terms of buying or craft, but, are enchanted bridles or horse statuettes common in that region?  For that matter, if they’re not common, is it going to cause confusion to people when they go around or into a building for a few moments, only to come back to see absolutely zero horse anywhere, because while they were gone you dismounted and dismissed the enchantment?
...Okay, okay, I’ve gone on long enough!  You can see how this one topic can quickly get out of hand.  And again, I am not an expert on equestrians in stories.  But if you do a bit of research and keep some realism in mind...you can write realistic scenes involving horses, shire style or otherwise.

Life is constantly putting up new obstacles for you to tackle, so how can you honor our Earth every day?
I'm here to help with that by sharing a list of 15 ways to honor Earth and be closer to nature whether you be in quarantine, an urban area, winter, or whatever situation you may find yourself in.
❁ Summer Jar ❁
I'm going to start off this list with a personal tradition, a summer jar or flower jar. What I do is I collect flowers (mostly just petals) and dry them right before summer starts transitioning out into autumn. I put all of these now dried petals and flowers into a small jar (with a lid). Now you are left with a jar full of color and life to get you through the winter. When spring comes around and flowers are blooming once again I spread them in my yard and leave the jar open until the end of summer.
❁ Your Alter ❁
An alter is a great way to honor the Earth. You can have something to symbolize each element, flowers you've collected, crystals, and so much more. I like to keep something that symbolizes the area I'm from, for me it's a fossil my dad found at his work. So much of witchcraft and paganism is nature based so adding in extra Earth elements isn't hard, Google for more Earthy alter ideas!
❁ Nature Walks ❁
Not everyone lives in an area around the woods or forest but that doesn't mean you can't take nature walks. If you live in an urban area go to a park, it's still nature even if it is outlined in tall office buildings. Even walking down the street notice dandelions in cracks of the sidewalk or birds hopping by, make sure the thank the Earth for making room for you to live. While in a social distancing situation that has sprung up these past few months you can still take a nature walk as long as you are not too close to people. Don't forget that just because you are socially distancing doesn't mean you can't be friendly, wave to neighbors as you pass just don't get too close. If you have access to a car go on a drive down the back rounds, it's a family favorite at my house.
❁ Meditation ❁
Meditating is something everyone can do! Grounding exercises are great, you can envision roots extending from your body into the Earth below you. I personally like to envision myself walking through the woods or in a creek when I need to clear my mind.
❁ Gardening ❁
A garden one of the best ways to connect with nature. There is so much symbolism you can put in your garden too, like specific flowers or color schemes for deities. You can grow herbs for your craft and cooking, fruits, veggies, or even just flowers. Gardens don't have to be very big, you could even go to a community garden. Gardening can also bring you closer to family if you fo it together or it can be a way to get some alone time. Gardening can also be a way to give back to Earth and the people around you, I'm sure your neighbors would love to be gifted from fresh produce!
❁ House Plants ❁
If you can't have a garden house plants are a great alternative. Plus, they won't be affected by weather outside. Some plants like spider plants are really good air purifiers, other plants like aloe have magick and medical uses. If you are worried about pets like your super cute cat you can try and find places the animal doesn't go like a bathroom. Don't forget to make sure a plant isn't toxic to pets before you buy it, just in case. House plants are a wonderful way to bring a little bit of Earth inside with you. Bonus points if you name your plants or talk to them.
❁ Crafts ❁
Making crafts with natural materials is so much fun! Going out to collect the supplies is half the fun. Crafting can be done so many different ways and in so many different mediums. Whether you like photography, drawing, painting, pottery, wood carving, metal working, or what ever else may float your goat the element of Earth can easily be added in. The internet if filled with countless crafts you can try to honor Earth if you want guidance or have artist block!
❁ Decor ❁
Decorating your room (or other space) with the earth element even works if you are broom closeted! You can spruce up your life and be more spiritual. You can decorate your place with earthy crafts, environmentally friendly products, crystals, a plant, a wooden sign, framed pictures, etc. Anything with those #EarthVibes!
❁ Clothes and Beauty ❁
What better way to honor Earth than use cruelty free products. You can check labels to see if your beauty and other self care products are not tested on animals, vegan, organic, contain micro plastics, and other things harmful to the environment. As for clothing I find it great to go to thrift stores for "new clothes" as well as donating my old clothes that either don't fit or I don't wear anymore. It can be great to support local stores rather than big name brands like American Eagle and it is way less expensive. Your clothes, jewelry, and makeup can even have an Earth theme to them. Brown and green tones are super earthy along with some rusty oranges. It doesn't need to be floral to be earthy!
❁ Food ❁
I am personally not a vegetarian or vegan but I am conscious of what I eat. I grow some of my own vegetables and I have a strawberry patch (witch is great for making jam). I try to eat organic or locally sources foods. If you live in a rural area try to get to know your local farmers. When you take food from the Earth you should always give back.
❁ Feathered Friends ❁
A family fun activity to get to know your Earth better is to go out and try to find some bird nests. Never get too close or disturb the nests or birds in any way, keep a respectful distance. It can be fun to keep an eye out and watch as the little babies grow. You could even go the extra mile and build (or buy if you aren't crafty) a bird box.
❁ Open the Windows ❁
Opening the windows is always wonderful. Houses and apartments can get stuffy so why not let Mother Nature give you fresh air. Opening windows gives opportunity to look and listen to the sounds of the Earth. Nothing is better than a breeze blowing through an open window.
❁ Cleanse Thyself ❁
I don't mean to break out the sage, I'm talking about a good old bath. Cleansing baths are great, you can add herbs, oils, scents, have candles, meditate, the whole shebang. But, if you are like me you only have a stand up shower then you can still have a good cleansing. Just envision all of the negative energies flowing down the drain. You can also save water (and money for new witchy supplies) by turning the water off while washing your hair, etc.
❁ Get Educated ❁
Learning about the natural history and features of your area can be really important. I love to study the geology of the mountains I'm from. You can learn about native flora and fauna and even what to do about invasive species. Education is a powerful weapon and and a tool of creation. The best way to get an understanding of the earth element is to learn about it. You can watch documentaries, read books, (credible) online articles, you can even talk to local people about the world around you. Part of learning about the earth could even be researching relevant deities.
❁ The 3 R's❁
Reduce, reuse, recycle: words we hear all the time but probably don't put enough thought into. Part of taking care of the earth is to keep it clean and not use to many of it's resources. This is such a broad category, you can reuse old containers to keep your witchy supplies in, cut back on the use of plastic and one use items, and recycle your trash so it can be made into new items. You can check out your local recycling place it there isn't a truck that picks it up on your street. There are so many ways to reduce your carbon footprint and reuse old products that seem usless. Check out upcycling, there are tons of trendy things you can do!
This is a repost of a post I made on the Pagan & Witch Amino a while ago

Because I had so much fun writing about it yesterday, have a few more (hopefully interesting) minor antagonist characterizations that I spent way too long coming up with based on tiny amounts of available canonical information on what they were like before Rapture fell.
Gilbert Alexander is organized, efficient, self-disciplined and passionate about his work. The money is nice, but it definitely isn’t his main reason for being. What he was really interested in when he came to Rapture was pushing the boundaries of his field, as well as those of his own talents.
To other people, he’s soft spoken, overly polite and a bit of a bore at parties. As his sense of his own social skill is somewhat inflated, this last bit frequently escapes him. He feels personally slighted when his overly eager to please tendencies fail to gain him friends and will ruminate on the smallest slights for much longer than they deserve. But ultimately, he’ll just keep stewing in his discontent and will likely never say anything to the colleagues who give him headaches. He does have an allergy to confrontation, after all.
You’d think one so sensitive to how other people think of him would be a bad fit for a job which involves a long line of test subjects who hate his guts and do not tire of saying so while they still have the faculties. But that’s where his self discipline comes in especially handy. Between him, his test subjects and the prison they come from, there is a meticulously crafted wall. On one side of it is him, his peers and his superiors. On the other side are those he simply doesn’t see as human at all. They’re just “animals” or “criminals” to him or in the case of the little sisters, production units.
It’s a bit embarrassing when an experiment goes awry and the boss has to wipe all the evidence lest Ryan find out that Rapture’s security has been compromised by a big daddy who’s gone too far out of city bounds to covertly get back. But he feels no true anger towards any of his test subjects when they “misbehave.” How can he, when they’re just animals doing what their nature demands they do? Thus, though his methods are by definition cruel, he does not indulge in cruelty for cruelty’s sake and leans toward seeing every failure as an opportunity for learning, rather than regret.
The only thing that was ever capable of knocking a hole through such a well built wall was a direct confrontation with an angry mother. When Lamb and the little sisters became human to him, his people-pleasing instincts went into full, self-destructive swing.
Sinclair’s problems are the inverse of Gil’s, which is why the two of them don’t like each other much.
Sinclair very much cares about the money. It’s a self defense mechanism. As long as he has enough of it, he can buy escape pods, bodyguards, all the luxuries that put a protective barrier between him and the outside world. But mainly, it’s so he can have all the security that his father never had. He’s told himself that this isn’t the case so many times that he almost believes it.
Like Gil, he too has a wall between whom he considers human and whom he does not, in order to do what he does in his line of work. But his is considerably more shoddy and easily knocked over. What works better for him is simply not looking too close at the consequences of his business plans.
In the book “Against Empathy”, there’s an anecdote about a woman in Nazi Germany who once lived within sight of a concentration camp and at a certain time every day, could see the people inside being tortured from her window. It bothered her immensely. So she rang the officers there and demanded that they torture their prisoners where she couldn’t see. The presence of empathy is not necessarily coupled with the drive to do right.
That’s where Sinclair is at, a decade before the start of the second game. He takes care not to spend a whole lot of time in his own slums and only visits Persephone in person several times a year. The vast majority of his time is spent in high class establishments and gilded boardrooms, a world away from the misery he’s built his fortune on. As long as it’s happening where he can’t see, he has no qualms about it at all.
What trips him up are the rare occasions in which he is forced to confront the consequences of his actions up close and personal. Even so, the remorse usually only lasts until he’s comfortably sheltered in his home or office or at a ritzy gentleman’s club filled with other people who don’t think his business tactics are a problem at all.
During the war, he sheltered in a luxury bunker filled with expensive liquor and top of the line prepackaged meals. For a while, he thought it would run its course and then the rebuilding would commence. He made a few bucks in the meantime and did a good job at keeping his head above water.
But when he emerged, his money was barely worth the paper it was printed on and of the empire he had worked so hard to build, nothing of worth remained. When his supplies ran out, he had to resort to scavenging like all the other common survivors. He frequently found himself working with people he had once considered beneath him and doing the dirty work he was in the habit of handing off to underlings. More than anything else, it was this experience that changed him. There was no longer anywhere he could run to escape his regrets. He couldn’t block out the reality that he now lived in the thick of.
Not that he didn’t try, though. In the beginning, Delta was merely a tool for securing his own exit out of the city. Or so he told himself. But as time went on and he got to know who he was working with, the pull of his newly installed moral compass grew stronger. Until finally, he found himself betraying the principles he’d swore he’d never give up.
