Sometimes growing up is realizing

4. Billford was abusive as fuck, but it’s so well written and it’s so interesting to look at their interactions through that lens. Seeing Ford break out of that hold is genuinely fantastic, and it’s such good writing. The writing of Bill’s abuse is so realistic, and not once does the narrative attempt to excuse it. He is an unreliable narrator in the truest sense of the word. He lies to himself AND us, sometimes without realizing it because his view of reality is so warped.

5. Bill’s behavior is explained by his past, but not excused by it. It’s so easy to feel empathy for him while condemning his actions. Alex hirsch has made such a genuinely good sympathetic villain without taking away the evil parts of him.

Ian’s heart kicks in his chest, a jolt of fear spiking through him, and his head swims. It’s like he’s back inside the dark theatre he’d been in all week. Mickey’s words are nothing but unfamiliar sounds.

If he’s gonna go to the movies, he might as well get a snack.

He grabs a pizza roll from the plate in front of him and pops it in his mouth. But when he bites down, the inevitable happens.

“Fuck,” he garbles, the sauce piping hot and burning his mouth.

Ian doubles over, in pain and embarrassed. He really should’ve known better.

“Jesus Christ,” Mickey huffs, standing up and leaving the room.

Ian opens his inferno of a mouth, hoping the air of the room will cool down the masticated snack. Thankfully, by the time he hears the familiar sound of a beer cap being popped off, he’s able to swallow.

Mickey returns, bottle in hand. He offers it to Ian. “S’all we got.”

Ian takes it, grateful as the icy liquid chills his charred throat. “All you got, huh? Even juvie’s got jello.”

“What d’you know about juvie, Gallagher?”

Mickey’s squint makes Ian’s chest constrict.

“What d’you know about me, Milkovich?”

HEYYY YALL ITS THE AUTHOR HERE TO SHATTER THE FOURTH WALL AND GIVE A QUICK OVERVIEW OF OUR CHARACTERS

Eevee: A normal guy. Same age as the rest of the crew, but swallowed an everstone years ago and hasn’t bothered trying to get it out.

Jolteon: The gang’s resident harbinger of chaos and Umbreon’s brother. He’s mostly going with the flow, almost always roping his friends into the anarchy he accidentally leaves in his wake, but he’s got a good heart. Consistently oblivious to Espeon’s crush on him.

Flareon: A clueless floof, who might not have that many braincells, but that just makes it so he has more room for love :3

Vaporeon: Wannabe daredevil and the self-appointed ‘Big Sister’ of the group, she consistently manages to get herself into life-threatening situations without even trying.

Umbreon: Jolteon’s brother, somehow the only sane man here. Consistently subjected to Leafeon and Jolteon’s shenanigans, but he puts up with it. May or may not be trying to play matchmaker.

Espeon: The only eon trying to keep the group stable, and failing miserably. She vehemently denies that she’s gotten a crush on Jolteon, but isn’t doing that good of a job at hiding it.

Leafeon: You know that one friend who you swear is constantly thinking “nobody hurts these idiots but me!” Yeah, that’s Leafeon. She’s protective of her friends, especially her best friend Jolteon, but let’s just say the time she almost committed first degree murder wasn’t the first, and probably won’t be the last.

Glaceon: The actual ‘Big Sister’ of the group, much to Vaporeon’s chagrin. Also the accidental group therapist, due to the fact that everyone tells her their drama, because they know she’ll comfort them.

Sylveon: Somehow in the direct center of this chaos, he somehow manages to stay mentally intact by refusing to give a shit. He does get a kick out of confusing the others, though.

one thing i do think is INCHERESTING about the substance is the use of food to evoke a disgust-reaction in the audience because i have quite a few sensory-based disordered eating behaviours and the movie completely nailed how i move through the world wrt food lol. its GROSS its HORRIFYING if I hear one person eat a shrimp i’m killing everyone in this room. like part of me has to wonder whether that’s intentional and whether they were playing into a very skewed conception of eating/food on purpose (because that conception *also* comes free i think with being preoccupied by Beauty and Emptiness and etc.) or whether it’s just a side effect of employing classic gross-out horror (to varying degrees of effectiveness). much to think about!
