How To Shop For Fabric Online

RIP Joann's. Now many places in the US no longer have a local fabric store, such as it even was toward the end.

There are some good posts going around about where to shop for fabric and craft supplies online, like this one for example. But if you're a beginner-to-intermediate sewist, and the way you've always shopped for fabric is by going to the store and touching it, it can be a hard, even cruel adjustment to suddenly be looking at a photo online and trying to piece together from the inconsistent descriptions what you're actually looking at.

So I'm going to just try to bang together a little primer on What Things Are Called, and how to educate yourself, so that you don't have to do what I did and just buy a ton of inappropriate stuff you wound up not being able to use for what you'd thought. And I will link to some resources that will help with this. This will be garment-sewing-centric but will, I think, be fairly broadly applicable.

The first thing is to look carefully at your desired project. If it is a commercial pattern, it will usually tell you what kind of fabric you need, but it will describe it in not the same words it's often sold under. If it is NOT a commercial pattern and you're kind of winging it, it's even harder. So here is how to start figuring out what you need.

Number one: Knit or Woven?

Quilting fabric is woven. If you are making a quilt, you want a woven. Most craft projects are made with woven fabric-- tote bags, upholstery, you name it.

Many garments are knits. T-shirts, yoga pants, cardigans. It is easy to know, because knits stretch. They can either stretch both ways (along the length and along the width) or just one way (usually along the width); this is confusingly either called 2-way stretch or 4-way stretch. Yes, stores are inconsistent. Look carefully at the description, and they will usually specify-- "along the grain" or "in all directions". Some garments require stretch only around the body-- maxi skirts, knit dresses etc-- while some absolutely need stretch both ways, like bathing suits.

No, you absolutely cannot clone your favorite knit t-shirt in quilting cotton. It will not fit. Most knit garments have "negative ease", meaning they are smaller than your body and stretch to fit. All woven garments have "positive ease", meaning they are larger than your body, unless very firm shaping undergarments are used.

SMALL EXCEPTION: There exist "stretch wovens", which are woven fabrics made with elastic fibers. These will be labeled as such. They are actually harder to sew with than regular wovens because they almost never have their stretch percentage labeled; they are NOT suitable for knit patterns. Avoid them, until you are more advanced and know how to accomodate them, is my advice!

Number two: WEIGHT.

How heavy is the fabric? How thick? How thin? This is measured in two main ways-- ounces per yard (denim is often 8oz, 10 oz, 12 oz) or grams per square meter. But many fabric retailers do not tell you a weight, they use words like "bottomweight" or "dress-weight", and you have to learn to figure out what they mean by that.

My lifehack for learning these has been go to go to ready-to-wear clothing retailers and see if they give the weights of the fabric their garments are made from. (Yes, I learned how to shop for clothes online instead of in-store years ago, because I am fat; some of us have had to do this a long time.)

If you are making a pair of trousers, you need heavier fabric than if you are making a blouse. Do not buy a floaty translucent chiffon to make your work trousers, it will not work no matter how cute the color is. Learn how the different weights of fabric are described, and you will improve your odds of finding what you need.

Number three: DRAPE.

Is it stiff? Is it fluid? Is it soft? is it firm? There are a lot of very artsy words used for this, and you may find yourself puzzling over things with a fluid hand, or a dry, crisp hand, or "a lot of drape", or maybe the listing doesn't describe it at all. This segues neatly into another technical thing, which is the WEAVE of the fabric. There is a dizzying array of words that tell you what kind of fabric it is-- twill, tabby, challis, chiffon, crepe, organza, georgette. And these will give you insight into the drape, and thus into the texture/usability of this fabric, and how suitable it may or may not be for your project.

I know it's a lot to think about but I am now going to give you resources for where to see all this stuff.

Number one is Mood Fabrics, which I can't believe hasn't been in any of the posts I've seen so far. They are a huge store in NYC's Fashion District and yes you can go there, but when I went there it overwhelmed me so much I left empty-handed. But what they have is AN INCREDIBLE WEBSITE. They have everything on there, and what's most important for you, their listings are INCREDIBLY consistent. They have VIDEOS of many of the fabrics, where a sales associate will hold it, wave it, stretch it, and tell you verbally what it is and what it's for, in about thirty seconds. HUNDREDS of these videos.

Whether you want to buy from them or not, go to Mood Fabrics, click around, find their listings, and read them. They will tell you fabric content, weight (usually gsm), often weave, they have little graphics that show you if it's for pants, dresses, shirts. And they have those videos. Look at the listings, watch the videos, and you will leave knowing a lot more about how to look at an online listing of fabric and know what you're getting.

Another really excellent website for this is Stonemountain & Daughter. I've actually not bought anything from them yet (they came highly recommended, but they're not cheap), but their online listings are, again, very thorough and very detailed. They always have a picture of the fabric with a fold in it held in place by a pin, which does more to help you understand the weight and drape of a fabric than any other static image ever could-- that visual, combined with how informative the listings are, has helped me learn to estimate fabric weights on other sites very effectively.

And here is a page that's ostensibly about how to wash silk, but I found it so useful because it gives such a clear image of what each weave/type of silk fabric looks and drapes like. I've never bought anything from these guys either, but this is a good resource.

Learn a little bit about fabric so you know what you're looking for, and you can begin to replace some of that "i just have to go and feel it in person" problem. There will still be trial and error, but you'll have a better starting place at least.

top left is my fave pants sewing pattern of all time, the fremantle pants by elbe textiles. i've made 5 pairs for myself in varying weights/fabrics and i love them dearly and will continue to make pants with this pattern forever

top right: pleat pants by readytosew. the asymmetry is unusual and not for everyone but i really really love these and find them so comfortable. when making them, the big pleat adds a bit of complexity but i'd say if you've made 1 pair of pants before you'd be able to do this for sure

bottom left: the alexandra morocco pants (free pattern) are really great too, i think these would be a good beginner pattern because there aren't any pockets to fiddle around with but i have hacked these to add inseam pockets before. these are also nice when hacked into shorts

bottom right: the all well studio pants are awesome, versatile, excellent beginner instructions and the designer has a hacking guide you can follow to modify the pants in various ways. the other patterns by this designer are also fantastic btw

i generally wear a US size 20/22 and all of these patterns come in sizes that fit me. all photos are taken from the designers websites. i like pants that hit at my high waist/a few inches above my belly button and all these hit the mark, so keep that in mind.

so you wanna get into goth fashion

here are some ideas and general advice! this post is specifically gonna prioritize cheap/DIY stuff as its the easiest for beginners and i like saving money. i will link some shops but its never necessary to buy from designated "goth brands" to be goth.

i will also try to cover a broad range of styles but i stick to a lot of 80s inspired & deathrock type stuff so it may lean toward that.

AND !!! if you have anything to add feel free to reblog!! there are definitely things ive missed and like i said i tend to lean towards specific styles so if you have a different perspective please share!

before we get into it properly, heres some art i made to better show some of the things i'll mention as well as to provide a bit of inspiration :D

this post will be long so im adding a cut :3

CLOTHING BASICS:

this is stuff you can probably find at a thrift store! and ive seen many people say "well i dont live in a big city so i cant find anything good". i live in a small town in the southern US and a lot of the stuff im gonna list is stuff i personally have found at thrift stores near me. so no matter where you are you can probably find at least some of this :D

- plain black t-shirts

- black sweaters

- black jeans & dress pants

- blazers

- trenchcoats

- fancy looking ties & scarves

- shawls

- long skirts or dresses

- button up shirts

- waistcoats/vests

- black tank tops

- studded/gromet belts, other belts with lots of metal decoration or an ornate buckle

- necklaces & bracelets, nothing specific here, just make sure to check the jewelery section and get creative!

- tights (opaque, sheer, fishnet, etc! theres all kinds of cool ones)

- leather jackets (its easier to find real leather at thrift stores and its usually way cheaper and can last a long time!)

- fingerless gloves (or regular gloves that you can cut)

- pointy boots

- dress shoes

- if they have seasonal stuff ALWAYS check near halloween you are guaranteed to find cool shit

and unrelated to fashion: thrift stores often have blank cds & cassettes!! great for making your own goth mixes

fabrics to look for:

- velvet

- lace

- mesh

- leather

- loose knit

SIMPLE DIY:

- the #1 easiest thing to do is just use black fabric dye. there are tons of tutorials for this & its very easy. but just keep in mind when you find stuff at thrift stores you should pay attention to the fabric; youll need different dye & sometimes different steps depending on if its natural or synthetic and the specific type of fabric.

- cut up a pair of tights! ripped tights can easily add some more fun and detail

- an extention of the previous diy, cut out the crotch of a pair of tights. cut off the toes & if you want to add holes for your thumbs. boom! shirt! ive done this with ripped up regular tights & fishnets. it also looks great with more lace-y patterns and stripes!

- put chains on shit. you can find chain at craft stores, hardware stores, and sometimes thrift stores. if its relatively thin then you can just take pliers and attach it to basically anything. boots, necklaces, bracelets, shirts, pants, belts, etc. you can also add split rings & safety pins if youre having trouble bending the chain or just want an easier way to remove it

- make your own necklaces and bracelets. there are a million ways to do this and you can find a lot of cool beads both at craft stores and from taking apart older necklaces or ones from the thrift store. you can also make stuff just by attaching safety pins together

- cut up a shirt. once again there are a million ways to do this. a lot of 80s deathrockers just have giant holes ripped in their shirts but there are also a lot of cool ways to do patterns and even braid the fabric for a cool effect

- if you have a belt that is falling apart or too small you can just cut it short and make it into a bracelet. this works best with gromet belts since you wont have to poke new holes for the buckle

- similar to the tights trick, cut the end off of some socks and add thumb holes for easy fingerless gloves

- use bleach or fabric paint to customize things! you can use stencils or just freehand. a lot of goth band logos lend themselves to messy paint strokes so theyre easy to do. i generally stick to t-shirts and patches but you can paint all kinds of stuff. you can just use acrylic paint in a lot of cases BUT i recommend fabric paint for anything on shoes because acrylic will crack very quickly

- speaking of patches, put em on everything!

- if you cut off the bottom of a t-shirt, you'll end up with a large loop of fabric which can be wrapped around the forearms for gloves/bracelets

HAIR & MAKEUP:

there are so many ways to do goth makeup but the most basic stuff youll need is black eyeliner and maybe some black eyeshadow. you can do anything with those. black lipstick is harder to find but you can use eyeliner & eyeshadow in place of it. white foundation is NOT ESSENTIAL. its common but you do not have to be pale to be goth. but if you do want to do it i recommend looking for "foundation pigment", its meant to mix with regular foundation so its a similar formula but it can be found in pure white pretty easily. you also do not have to be an expert at eyeliner. i know a lot of people nowadays do crazy intricate shit with tons of tiny lines but you dont gotta do all that. and part of the fun of goth makeup is that it can be really messy

black hair dye is very cheap since its a natural color that can be found at the dollar store. if you want to tease your hair be aware that you will probably be damaging it. ive found that its easier to tease your hair when its shorter, and i recommend a fine tooth comb for the best results. got2b is a good brand for hairspray and it tends to hold well. i also like to use "styling fiber" (very similar to pomade but less shiny) which helps with increasing volume at the base of my hair. whatever hairstyle you choose is up to you and you dont have to have a "goth haircut" at all.

extras:

- i usually get black nail polish at the dollar store. very easy to do and it doesnt have to be perfect

- this is a little more expensive and requires more maintenance but colored contacts are a really fun addition

- mobility & disability aids can also be customized a lot with things like wheel covers, keychains, stickers, fun glasses frames, fabric decorations, etc

- music videos, album covers, band photoshoots, and concert photos are really good for outfit inspiration

- dont be afraid to mix styles together. this is a rough guide but make sure to explore on your own and find stuff that YOU like (:

1) aka my first piece - I learned weightpainting last weekend and now the bottom won't clip with the thighs anymore! There is still some very slight clipping at extreme movements & with bigger pants, but generally should be fine now :)

2) I changed the tiling to 6 x 6 for 2 out of 3 swatches in TSRW so patterns won't show up as big. The third preset still has the 4 x 4 tiling so you have the choice

3) To further avoid clipping, I made the bottom part a bit more peplumy, which resulted into needing to make the backfaces bigger, so I did that.

4) It is a completely new file. For those who merge your files with s3pe (I do) I also relink the old file so you can make sure what to delete

Version number...5? In-game I discovered the thin morph in particular was a bit off with some bottoms + during one of my previous edits, I ended up deleting the thumbnails.

hey!! i have some fashion questions if you dont mind, did you make the white shirt and pants in the first pic on your vampire post yourself? do you wear prescription glasses, and if so whered you get red lenses from? i am slowly taking an interest in dressing similarly regularly lmao

Hello ! I did make the whole outfit in the first picture. The shirt is a basic men's linen undershirt (the kind you make with rectangles, it's a great beginner project and there are a lot of tutorials online), and the pants are based off this pattern by Laughing Moon . As for the glasses, I am quite short sighted so the glasses in the first pic are indeed my regular prescription glasses, but the red ones are basic sunglasses I got in a thrift shop so I wore contacts with them. I do think you can customize prescription sunglasses with different lens colours when you buy them online at places like Polette and similar stores but I've never tried that myself.

Lorenzo Berkshire

Stage Presence:

Lorenzo Berkshire is the goofiest guy in the band there's no questioning it really.

But he's also the sweetest. He's basically their mother, the guys hate it no they don't

He's always making sure they're sleeping enough and taking breaks when they need to

He won't let them go to parties if they haven't rested enough or if they have to be up early

He's also the most punctual surprisingly (Blaise is the least, fashion really is his downfall sometimes)

He has fully abandoned his drums in the middle of a song if he sees one of the guys panting or out of breath

It's the adrenaline and Matt just finished singing and of course he's going to be out of breath but Enzo makes him drink at least half of a water bottle

They honestly really love it

He does joke around with Matt a lot though

Matt will introduce one of the guys and right when they're supposed to speak he'll unplug their mic or something else silly

He is always MOVING so he does unfortunately break everything

Mainly drumsticks, but he has broken the occasional amp or mic. He was extremely apologetic though

He absolutely loves playing drums, they're a great way to release stress and anxiety. It's such a drastic difference compared to his upbringing and he uses it as an escape

Because of this he knew exactly what inner turmoil Draco was going through and really helped him realize he was his own person

He also learned how to fix everyone's instruments in case of an emergency

He looks after everyone before himself

Bro has a deep voice when he does sing and it's not exactly super smooth but he still sings really well, he knows how to capture everyone's attention

He's gotten to be a really good drummer though, sometimes he'll even spice things up by completely changing the drum part

Some of his fans know all of his different versions of their songs and dutifully update the fan base with any new ones that he comes up with

Wardrobe:

Enzo is all about the punk aesthetic, think Sex pistols (does anyone else see what I did there)

He wears a lot of patterns and fun colors

He wears fishnets shirts and other graphic tees

He wears leather jackets and skinny jeans or leather pants

He's a big fan of pins and patches too

He'll also go shirtless in the middle of the show he has lost like 20 shirts

He also wears boots

He has pretty spiky hair and he did that on a whim, completely impulsive

He wears bracelets, earrings, and chains

Surprisingly doesn't have any tattoos

But he does have a few piercings, his ears and he definitely has a nipple piercing

He had really wanted to completely erase who he used to be and so he changed everything about his appearance

He does have love for the style and the escape it was able to provide him but he does kind of want to venture into his own style, but he doesn't know if he can and he hasn't told anyone yet....

I almost always buy secondhand (like the thrift, ebay, etc. I recommend ebay for online, cuz its what older people use and it has less scalpers like depop. if youre in the EU, sellpy is your friend)! And the nice thing about 80s fashion is you don't really have to buy any specialty clothing, unless you cant diy and wanna get stage wear.

As someone who's special interest is fashion, it helps to understand what cuts/patterns/colors were in style in the 80s and specifically in the subculture. When I dress for work I usually go with straight cut high rise jeans with a cool belt, a band tee and my trusty leather jacket.

If you want glam up - I usually go with leather pants, a women's blouse and a very loud vest (or vice versa). Also remember that it's also very important to accessorize and style your hair, that can sometimes make or break an outfit!

You don't have to spend much for the fashion and that's why I love it. Don't be afraid to diy stuff! Paint jackets, cut up shirts, make yourself a chunky necklace - go wild and have fun! Honestly I think that's all there is.

There are a few specialized brands like L.A. Roxx (leather wear), Wornstar (denim, lether), Risky Business (pleather, leather) and Hellion Store (pleather) for stage wear, but they're handmade and pricey, but worth it if you wanna spend the money.
