Here was my first glimpse at how the trading/selling world works. To stay in the server, everyone had to donate at least $5. The set goal was $2600, and that was going to purchase both "All of the Girls" and "Drama Queen."

Easy peasy, I thought. Man, I was wrong. The server blew up almost immediately, with people threatening the seller, demanding they leak other songs or get reported. Within a matter of hours, people had donated over $1k, and with that, hiloy leaked a small snippet of "Forever Winter," as a treat. Then, the server got nuked.

Thankfully, they had a backup. As soon as the back up was, well, back up, everyone was re-invited and the madness continued. In the middle of it all, "Forever Winter" leaked. While it wasn't true that it was hiloy who had leaked it, the person who did so did it under that name, so HUNDREDS of people flocked to the server to donate. The rest of us just ran with it, saying things like, "Yeah, they leaked it to prove that they have the goods." Was it dishonest? Yeah. But did it work?

Well, we hit the goal within I think like, 10-ish hours? So I'd say so. Everyone was cheering and partying it up in the group chat and then... right afterward, the server was nuked again. And so was the backup. And the backup backup. I then took to the leak site, and tried to get re-entry. I even messaged hiloy on twitter. Everyone just told me to wait for the leak. So overall, I was not impressed and felt pretty scammed. In all honesty though, I felt worse for the big donators. Someone had dropped almost $300 and then lost all access.

Fast forward to today, after a few days' silence (which I am told is pretty normal; transactions apparently usually get converted from funds to crypto), they just... Showed up on the leaks site. But the problem was, "All of the Girls" was not HQ, like it was promised. The backlash was almost immediate, with people calling out hiloy left and right for misinforming the server and trying to scam everyone out of their money. Hiloy then had the nerve to turn around and tell some of the donators that they should be grateful to have even received what they did.

And then all hell broke loose, again. See, the part I didn't tell you was that, provided all went well with this first group buy, hiloy was going to be selling off "Need" and "This is What You Came For (Demo)" to another group buy next. I guess this really unnerved someone else who had them, because basically right afterward, we got the second leak out of nowhere. My best guess was that they leaked "Need" and "TIWYCF" to keep hiloy from being able to make any more profit off those who just want the songs.

I'm sure I missed some of the drama, but that's honestly like the shortest summary I could give of it. It was absolute chaos. Wouldn't have missed it for the world, though.

The Problem

The NFT market can crush an artist’s spirit. The expectations of becoming an instant success do not match the work required. The emotionally draining act of constantly selling yourself along with the energy needed to create can lead to depletion and exhaustion; it’s why we also see so many tweets about mental health in the NFT space.

With so much effort and resilience required to survive in this space the easy thing to do is hop on a Twitter thread. This typically leads to some followers but no sales. So what is the next step for an artist?

Some artists are accepted to gated platforms (SuperRare, Makersplace, Nifty Gateway) giving them an advantage. There the artist must display the talent that the platform deems worthy of their brand or standard. But what about the ones that don’t meet an arbitrary requirement or style? And what about the artists that are never considered due to the sheer volume of applicants?

OpenSea has become a perfect metaphor for the experience of the NFT artist: an ocean filled with NFTs for anyone to purchase, if only you can find it and can discern between value and speculation. At least on SuperRare or other curated sites, a collector can trust that the gatekeepers have put in the time to discern whether this artist is “worthy” of being collected.

The popularity of Hic Et Nunc (HEN) helped bridge the gap between value and speculation by allowing a lower entry point for amateur collectors to simply buy what they love. While HEN has provided a cleaner NFT alternative to ETH marketplaces and created a launch pad for unknown artists - with no curation, artists still go undiscovered by collectors who may love their work.

This is why many of us in this space turn to Twitter to discover new artists.

This is why influencers have taken to profiting off of their following to help artists gain exposure.

This is why shill threads have become a daily practice on Twitter.

On the surface, these threads appear innocent and supportive. Perhaps many of them are sincere, but this is an inefficient way to connect artists with collectors and an even worse way to highlight talent that may go unrecognized.

The Solution

“In 4 months, you’re going to look around and wonder how you got here.”

That was my boss back in February. It took a little longer than that, but he was right.

How did I end up here?

How did I become one of those people tweeting about how NFTs changed my life?

Nine months ago I answered a random post on Reddit:

“Looking for NFT content creators to join our community-driven NFT publication.”

Thus, I met my boss, Sean, the co-founder of Cryptowriter, and began talking about NFTs and the insanity that was beginning to take hold of people and push NFTs into the mainstream.

Since then, we’ve talked every day: late at night spitballing crackpot ideas to each other; tinkering and rewriting articles; arguing (Sean calls them “discussions”) about the best path forward.

Every crazy idea I have, he encourages me to go further, explore it and make it a reality.

I began gaining his trust and vicariously gaining the acceptance of the other founder, Kenny, as well. Freelance writing turned into recruiting artists for interviews. That led to me hosting the podcast, Behind the Pixel, with an open-ended conversation revealing the artist’s inner thoughts, ideas and influences surrounding their art.

Behind the Pixel was also created as an airdrop feature for our Cryptowriter Membership cardholders. Partnering with artists, we feature them on our website, host them on the podcast and then drop a piece of their artwork to our members.

We quickly connected the dots realizing all these pieces worked together and were part of something bigger.

UNDRGRND was born from those “discussions”. UNDRGRND would become an art platform, dedicated to newly discovered artists, elevating their exposure through articles, podcasts and airdrops to our community.

No longer would artists rely solely on the Twitter algorithms and shill threads. We would partner with artists, collectors and curators to filter through the noise and discover talented artists that deserve recognition for their work.

Our Passion

In the early 2000s, there were underground hip-hop, garage-rock and pop-punk bands floating around on the internet in blogs to gain exposure. Those unknown bands eventually became music video stars and grammy award nominees. But it all started on a website just like UNDRGRND.

There was competition and pride among people who knew musicians before they were mainstream. The band, Bon Iver, won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2012, despite their first album being released in 2008. Bands like Saves the Day, Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional were indie label monsters before radio stations began playing their singles. Before Mos Def and Talib Kweli were superstar rap lyricists they were heading the underground hip-hop movement. And before Arcade Fire was on the cover of Rolling Stone, they were receiving accolades on the blog Pitchfork. This was my foundation and a formative experience for who I am today.

Sean started telling stories about his blog, TheFreshBeat, that highlighted underground and unknown electronic music artists. It gained enough of a following that clubs in the Miami area began looking to TheFreshBeat for new undiscovered electronic music.

We talked about how great it was discovering music that no one else knew. We enjoyed sifting through everything to find the gems; it was work but it was fun.

Now, we bring that same energy and mentality to UNDRGRND.

Like Indie music to mainstream pop music, UNDRGRND will focus on unfamiliar names before they become famous.

As a member of our community we hope to fuel your excitement of discovering something new.

FTX and Alameda - the crypto crash explained

I’m not a crypto advocate but the implosion of FTX and Alameda is compelling reading. One statistic repeated by the media is that the net worth of SBF (the founder and boy genius) dropped from $16B to $0 overnight. It is difficult to understand how that’s possible - this clip from the WSJ is the best layman’s terms explanation I’ve seen.

Here’s another example: imagine you and I are camping and it starts raining. Your matches are wet and useless while I have a box of 100 dry matches in my backpack. You’re desperate to light a fire and agree to pay me $100 for a single match. Using the FTX example, the remaining 99 matches are worth $9,900 and I use the ‘value’ of the matches as collateral to buy a car. Crazy right? But that’s a reasonable analogy to how FTX was valued and one way they got in trouble.

But there’s another huge law they broke. To explain this, let’s think about Citibank which has a large consumer banking operation as well as an investment division. The investment division makes investments (of varying risk profiles) in businesses and the proceeds (or losses) from these investments are distributed to its shareholders. So you can have a checking savings account at Citibank and also be a shareholder. BUT… Citibank can’t use the money from your savings accounts to fund risky investments made by its investment arm. Unfortunately, FTX broke this rule. Unsuspecting customers deposited their crypto coins in the FTX bank not knowing that FTX was making undisclosed loans to it’s sister investment company Alameda. That’s illegal in the US and regulators would have caught it but FTX international (where most of the losses occurred) is based in the Bahamas. Because FTX deposits aren’t insured by the FDIC, when the Alameda investments went south and all the FTX depositors wanted their money/coins back (like an old-fashioned run on the bank), FTX didn’t have the money and had to declare bankruptcy. That’s the fraud part and it’s why people will go to jail.

There were so many red flags surrounding FTX which many in the global financial community ignored, not least of which was the lack of audited financial statements from a globally recognized audit firm.

The US banking and securities regulatory systems are often the subject of criticism from both sides (underfunded yet with confusing inefficiencies caused by overlapping regulatory agencies)… but they are very important and add to the long term strength and resilience of the US financial market. I’m now old enough to recognize that approximately every 10 years the market finds a way to exploit a loophole and cause a mini or major meltdown. In the ‘80’s it was junk bonds, in the early 90’s it was the Savings and Loan crisis, the early 2000’s brought the internet fueled dot.com meltdown and of course we all still remember the mortgage/CDO crisis of 2008-09. Now we’re teetering on the edge of the post-pandemic recession again caused by runaway inflation which in turn was caused by Covid supply chain challenges and Covid stimulus money.

There’s only common thread I can find. In each case the world has been awash in cash, inflating the price of traditional investments and thereby lowering their returns. As a result investors seeking to put the cash to work pursue increasingly risky investments and overlook traditional due diligence. A FOMO mentality takes over and an implosion isn’t far behind. The crypto run up and decline is a perfect example.

How to create an NFT for free

So, you want to know how to create an NFT for free? This tutorial will show you how. It’s way simpler to create, or ‘mint’ an NFT than you’d imagine — and doing it for free is just as easy. In this tutorial, I will create a single NFT artwork, and not delve into minting generative NFTs or an NFT collection.

But, what are NFTs? I hear you ask. Well, these non-fungible tokens are everywhere but they’re not actually as complex as they first seem. Basically, NFTs are a way of registering a digital file on a cryptocurrency blockchain, to make sure it’s a unique item and demonstrate ownership. Need more? You might assume you’ll need a computer or laptop to create an NFT. While that’s obviously possible, you can also do it on your mobile device. The best NFT apps for iPhone allow you to create an NFT on the go, and check out how your collection is doing. Plus, you can track NFTs on different blockchains. With that in mind, some of the steps below for creating an NFT for free are applicable, but I’m using a desktop browser and Wacom Studio tablet.

How to create an NFT for free: the steps

01. Creating a crypto wallet account

You’re going to need a cryptocurrency wallet to set up an account on any NFT marketplace in order to create your NFT. We’re choosing Metamask as it’s one of the most widely used and accessible. There are alternatives, such as Coinbase wallet.

When you create your wallet account you’ll be given a 12 word ‘seed phrase’, this is your unique password. Keep it safe and don’t share it anywhere, the seed phrase acts as your security code (handy if you forget your password).

02. Making an account on an NFT marketplace

For this tutorial I’m creating an account on Rarible, but the same approach applies to any NFT marketplace. Read my guide to the best NFT marketplaces to find the right one for you.

Once you set up our account (adding a user name, photo, bio, etc.) link your Metamask account to your Rarible account by following the instructions. Linking your two accounts ensures your NFTs will appear in your wallet and all transactions can be easily completed (you’ll need to go into Metamask’s settings to automatically bring in your NFTs). My Metamask account also acts as my Rarible login.

Spend some time personalising your NFT marketplace account, adding a banner image, and linking in your social media accounts. The more time spent ensuring your socials are connected the better; you’ll find your art is more visible the more time you take to add detail into your page.

03. Painting some art

For this guide to how to create an NFT for free I quickly create a new piece of art. I google some random photo references and create a sketch using the painting app Rebelle 5; it’s quick and I’m not focusing on detail but a general sense of the face and proportions. An NFT can be any digital file so create the art you enjoy making, but here I’m choosing a digital painting. I save the new painting as a jpeg and prepare to upload it to my new NFT marketplace account and mint it as an NFT.

04. Uploading your art

It’s time to upload my art and begin creating an NFT for free. These NFT marketplace sites like Rarible have very user-friendly guides to uploading your art and the process is generally the same (some select NFT marketplaces may want verify you, and this can take a few days). Click the Create tab in the top right of your account and continue.

You’ll now need to choose a blockchain. On Rarible there are four choices, including the new low-carbon cryptos Flow, Tezos and Polygon. (We have a must-read guide to the most popular NFT crypto to decide which is best for you.) To create an NFT for free I choose Ethereum.

05. Choosing free minting

The next options help your decide the value and type of NFT you’re creating, for example choose Single to create a one-off unique NFT or Multiple to mint a series of NFTs to create a collection. (Take a look at my NFT trends feature for inspiration.) Set the price, add a name and description, and make sure you switch Free Minting to ‘On’.

Free minting, or lazy minting, enables you to put the fees for minting onto the buyer so you won’t be charged. Usually you’re charged ‘gas fees’ — the cost of transacting on the blockchain — to mint an NFT. The unit of gas is called a ‘Gwei’. Depending on the traffic on the blockchain as you’re minting the fee can increase or decrease; the greater the traffic the higher the cost. Often it can be cheaper in the late evening or early morning.

But… I’m not being charged if I choose Free Minting. The downside to pushing the gas fees onto the buyer is you may need to lower your asking price to anticipate the later cost, or mint your NFT as an auction and let the buyer decide.

06. The NFT is minted

On Rarible, when the NFT is minted you get a lovely explosion of digital confetti. Now the real work begins. It’s best to social and post about your new NFT as soon as possible. You can link the new NFT directly to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media channels from within the NFT marketplace.

You see, minting an NFT for free is easy but there are some things you need to know; the advantage of free minting enables you to quickly create an NFT for free but it can have some drawbacks as NFT marketplaces tend to make ‘normal’ NFTs more visible. How to create an NFT for free: frequent questions

What’s a blockchain?

This is a database that is shared amongst the nodes of a computer network. Each block in the chain contains data and constantly check and update the data. This makes any assets on the blockchain immutable, which ensures the data is extremely hard to change or delete. These are decentralised networks, meaning there is no third-party involved and all data is freely available for view and tracking.

What gives an NFT value?

Rarity and / or status help an NFT achieve value. So, for example, an NFT created by established artists such as Beeple, Damien Hirst, and Takashi Murakami will be worth a lot. But NFTs are breaking the rules. New artists are finding new ways to ensure NFTs differ from traditional art valuations. Community and utility is a major factor. Think of an NFT such as a Bored Ape Yacht Club as a ticket to a club, and that club will have exclusive events, chat groups and projects to be involved with; these community driven NFTs have great value.

Why is an NFT jpeg worth so much?

An NFT jpeg is worth so much because it’s not the jpeg that is being bought, but the hash token on the blockchain. The Crypto Punk art is the visual ‘thing’ we can find easy to understand, but the true value of the NFT is its token and the benefits it can bring by being on a blockchain. This can include being invited to exclusive in real life events.

How much does it cost to make an NFT?

It can be free, if you use lazy minting. Standard NFTs can vary wildly in the cost of gas fees to generate and register on a blockchain, and the costs rises and falls as the blockchain is being used. A typical NFT can cost anywhere from $10 / £7 to ¢$200 / £170. We have known of fees to reach $2,000 / £1,700.

What kinds of NFTs sell the best?

NFTs that have utility will always sell well as they embrace the full functionality of the blockchain. This is why you will find the below NFTs are some of the most popular.

Can I avoid gas fees without using lazy minting?

Yes, to a degree. Newer NFT crypto blockchains such as Wax enable you to set the gas fee limit you’re will to pay to mint an NFT. It will be processed and minted at a time when the gas fee matches your set level. Also, consider avoiding minting an NFT on Tuesdays and Thursdays as these are historically the busiest days and so the costliest.

That Hole Was There When I Got Here or “My Problems with A.I. Generated Images.”

A.I. Generated Images are...yup.

To be honest, I don’t really have a problem with A.I. generated images.  I don’t think they’ll be much more than what they are now, but I don’t have a problem with them in general.  They would be best used by people who want to commission art to give artists a rough example of what they want illustrated by the artist, or by artists as thumbnail “sketches” or underdrawings to make a more elaborate piece.  And I think that’s where all of this is going to end up once the noise dies down and the trolls/tech bros stop shilling for this like they do Crypto (hopefully.)

If anything, my problems with A.I. generated images is that none of this should be open sourced and it should have never crossed anyone’s mind to make it open source.  Because I do believe that a lot of the stuff with the wonky hands/tiny details, bad anatomy, and screwed up perspective issues and whatnot are things that should have been worked out well before they released this in any stage.  And they should have been worked out away from the public with dedicated teams of properly compensated testers and artists working the prompts and feeding the programs the right kind of images to do it’s job properly and legally.

By putting this out as open source, by obscuring where the feeder images are coming from and how much of it is copyright work and how much of it is free-to-use, the people who came up with these programs took the majority of the burden off of their hands and put it on the public to work out.  They get free labor from you to do their jobs for them.  To do the fine tuning that they should have been doing to work out the issues that shouldn’t be there in working version of these programs.  And they don’t care about the quality of the images or the results of said images so long as they get what they want.  

And if you paid the people who made these programs to use the programs, they just made money on top of getting a steady stream of free feedback/free labor they wanted to make a finalized version of these programs.

I can’t stress this enough.  Just like you shouldn’t buy a First Person Shooter game that needs you to teach it how to shoot, you shouldn’t give your labor or pay to labor for a product that struggles with perspective, anatomy, figure placement, and small details like fingers.  That still needs significant human intervention even after it generates an image that’s good enough to display to the public, one that may be riddled with copyright images or images in general that should not be used to “train the program”.  Especially when the program is used to generate the kinds of images that they wouldn’t want to be out there, in a way that would get them and the person putting in the prompts, in trouble with law enforcement (hint: it rhymes with “wild born”).  Just that alone should have made keeping these programs closed sourced.  

It makes no sense to give the people who wrote the code the ability to use your labor for their own ends and use the feedback to make a better program.  It makes no sense to do their job for them in making those programs.

Programs that, if or when the bugs are worked out, they will charge you outrageous prices for to use the “full version.”  And leave you with the copy you see now that still can’t figure out hands, adds muscles, and does not understand that people don’t clip through walls.  And is still only capable of barely passible, generic art that still needs a human hand to finish the job.

Granted, the people who fear that these programs will destroy jobs are correct.  These programs, if they’re able to get to where people think they can and go beyond being a meme or the shiny toy of the moment, will destroy huge chunks of the graphic design industry and anything that relies on digital art to produce a product.  They will downsize and push out artists, put prompters in their place, and demand that said prompters, regardless of skill, to do the job of multiple people while expecting to pay even less for the barely passable images that will be produced and at a completely unreasonable pace.  

The problem is that the automation and devaluing of commercial art and art in general has been going on for a long time, at least since the creation of the camera.  The fight to bring compensatory value to art as a public good and a consumable object is an ongoing one and a crucial one if art is to be a industry where one can find work and express one’s self creatively.  A.I. generated images only brings that fight to stark contrast, as we can now see what the stakes are and have been.  

But none of this is new.  The only thing new is that the people doing the damage are Tech-bros and people who want low-effort porn and memes.  And if they get their way, all they’ll do is just create another facet of the Gig Economy where you’re expected to produce labor at any time for anyone for peanuts, with no regards to skill or quality so long as the bare minimum is met.

Where the bare minimum is praised as exceptional because any other viable option has been buried for the sake of the bad option.

...So yeah...that wacky A.I. generated image stuff is sure something...

And that’s what bothers me the most.
