Final Thoughts on Children of Dune & First Impressions of God Emporer of Dune

This book fucked me in the ass, elephant cock, no lube. As I have mentioned to a few IRLs, I would rather drag my bare pussy over hot coals than read it again. To paint a picture of how difficult it was to stay engaged with this book: I read 6 books in January. I read 1/2 of a book from the start of February to early March, and that 1/2 book was... you guessed it... Children of Dune.

The book picks up nearly 8 years (iirc) after the end of Dune Messiah following Ghanima & Leto ii. Which in itself is not an issue. Although both characters are supposedly a foil for Alia, whom Frank does not characterize very well.

That is if you count being "an abomination" for the entirety of the book as ~characterization~. That, and the fact she is possessed, by Baron Harkonnen. Which I feel was Franky's last stab at making the Baron a key character, though he kinda-sorta lost the plot on this one near the end of the book.

... I mean, that is unless he brings the Baron back to possess another character...

The book itself is strangely paced. At times it jumps between different character's POVs that are happening congruently, at times it skips multiple days and weeks between chapters. The end of the book also feels relatively rushed, as if Frank has to try and fit multiple key parts into the last 10 pages. With that, it is important to note that the last 50 pages of the novel were hands down my favorite part of the book. It is hard to tell if this was because the book was almost over or because the plot actually came together.

I also think the style in this book is quite consistent with the previous 2 books (this is important as there is an abrupt style change in God Emperor). This style is very clunky and dense almost as if *it* expects you to decipher the riddles in which it is speaking. Children of Dune read in the same manner, making it a very drawn-out read, parts of it requiring one's utmost attention lest you miss a vital clue that could only be divulged by reading between the lines of Frank's shroom-filled delusions.

All in all, I found this book to be my least favorite of the Dune books, with Messiah as a close second.

This is the perfect segue to my opening thoughts on God Emperor of Dune:

As I am only about 50 pages into the book this is very much preemptive, though I already find myself enjoying this book much more than the last 2. I think this has to do with the immediate change in writing style. Frank must have taken a brick to the head to change his style this much, but after drowning in a sea of riddles for the last ~2,000 pages I find this to be a much-welcomed breath of fresh air.

God Emperor opens up about 3,000 years following the end of Children of Dune, from what appears to be the perspective of a scholar. This chapter is also unique as it does not open with a quotation, that which has been present at the start of each chapter in the previous 3 books, instead, it opens with a single sentence announcing where the piece of text originates from. In this case, it is an "Excerpt from [a] speech," that is announcing a discovery of a *presumably* important artifact.

The next chapter picks up again with the chapter-opening quotations, (Yes... That is what we will call them.) and jumps immediately into an action scene, which I found unusual as well as Franky typically writes in a more ballad-esque style. Thus far this book is very energetic & snappy and I am very excited to finish it and move on to Heretics, given that Frank continues with his newfound style!

Will update with more DUNE thoughts in the next few weeks, life is busy right now.

webtoon up to their crappy money making BS again 😐 aren't they already making enough money off their tens of millions of monthly readers? Did they set up this whole coin system with the end goal of using their site as an advertising platform?

Webtoon doesn't even feel like it's about web comics anymore. It's about piggybacking off creators' hard work to suck money from its users, credit card or not.

If the comic is ongoing, there's a fast pass system, with coins to advance. If the comic is finished, there's a daily pass system, with coins to advance. If the comic is popular and finished in another language, there's both. A popular webtoon will be complete and you have 60 days max to binge read before it's paywalled despite the fact you might have kept up with it for years at that point.

Now it's not enough for you to scroll through the episodes to get coins, now they want you to do a quiz. There might not even be enough slots for everyone to do the quiz! There was a time when there was no expiration date on coins you earned. Now you only get to keep the coins for 7 days. Go drop dead, right now.

From what I've read, creators don't get paid if someone purchases fast pass with free coins. I never thought webtoon was a benevolent entity creating a safe haven for aspiring comic creators, but their real greed as a company under multibillion-won-earning Naver is finally showing.

3 books into the Dune Saga.

What was I thinking?

My New Year's resolution was to read all 24 books. At least I only have 21 books left?

Right???

Upon finding out that Frank Herbert only wrote the first 6 books I have reconsidered my decision to read all 24. Whilst Brian, his son, is arguably a better writer than I; it seems that despite his determination to interpret his father's notes Brian falls victim to his own hubris, writing a very poorly dictated 18 novels that have so much potential, though still lacking. Thus I find myself still hesitant to commit to all 24 books. I hear that while the first 6 books are "wonderful", "thought-provoking",& "Sci-Fi legend" I am under the impression that after reading the first 3 books I have gotten myself into a very indecisive pickle.

The first Dune book was phenomenal. If you are interested in reading a well-developed, sci-fi novel I cannot recommend it enough. Frank writes "Dune" and introduces both Paul Atreides and the reader to these unfamiliar Fremen terms and concepts in tandem. He builds a sense of awe and confusion in Paul that is unique as the reader can also take an active part in it too; I think this is primarily what makes the first of the saga so phenomenal. It maintains a sense of whimsy and fiction that not many books were doing in the 60s. Hence why one often hears Frank referred to as the "Father of Modern Science Fiction." That being said, it took me about 3 days to consume all 800 pages of "Dune". Cover-to-cover.

"Dune Messiah", the second of the saga, skips forward (iirc) 12 years following the end of the initial book. I found this one to be way more politically charged than the first. Though it adds to the complexity and world-building that is established in the first book it can be easily interpreted as a thinly-veiled "manifesto" (I use this loosely) as I found myself scoffing at certain points; noticing that Frank was just echoing what I knew to be his own personal beliefs. As a sci-fi enjoyer, I end up finding that sci-fi can walk the thin line between overly ancap lit or amazingly intricate & well thought-out intergalactic space politics. I think this view can be reflected onto the novel and is the resounding opinion amongst others who have read enough sci-fi & those who have read "Dune Messiah". Mind you, I also blazed through this book, I believe it took me 2 days to read all of 400 (?) pages.

The most recent & current read is "Children of Dune". I have picked through pretty much the entire novel. Having only about 50 pages left. This book has been a more difficult read. It does not skip much into the future in comparison to the Dune-Dune Messiah jump which skips a minimum of 8 years before delving into the story. Though it has taken me longer, and was more difficult to digest I can argue that I enjoyed this one more than I did Messiah. "Children of Dune" shows the very intricate relationship between the remaining Atreides family &, for lack of better, staff. The plot in this novel is much more complex, I found myself having to re-read certain points of the book to confirm that I was interpreting the character interactions correctly. Filled with plenty of backstabbing motives, multitudes of prescient characters, and quick scene changes between chapters I found that if I didn't have as good of an understanding of the character's personalities and relations in the first 2 books I would have had much trouble discerning between each sneering and multi-coded remark.

That being said, I am overall really enjoying the plot intricacies and character developments that Frank constructs in these novels. I am very excited to read "God Emporer of Dune"! I will update within the coming weeks with more Dune commentary :D
