I've said it before but the evolution of Bob Belcher from angry guy who yells all the time to tired dad that only yells when pushed to the brink was the best possible move they could have made

Bob’s Burgers is one of my favorite shows ever. It’s one of my comfort shows. So often adult animations rely on being crude and offensive to be entertaining. Or they lean heavily on abusive family dynamics. After a time, it becomes tiresome. I’m someone who enjoys the kindness in others, not their cruelty. That’s not a revolutionary thing to say, I know. But a lot of adult animation and it’s fans want that offensive stuff, wants to see families rip each other apart whether that be emotionally or physically. But Bob’s Burgers is different.
For so long adult animation pertained to the bad dad trope. We had the Peter Griffins and the South Park dads, for example. But Bob Belcher is a breath of fresh air. It’s been stated that Bob did not have a good childhood. We do know some of the extent of why it was bad. Bad enough that he feels viscerally uncomfortable with his father’s presence. However, Bob didn’t pull a Hank Hill where he just shut down his emotions. He made the decision to be emotionally present.
Tumblr media
Tina is awkward and deals with an ever-present loneliness. She feels like an outsider in the world. Constantly voicing her feelings and her frustrations that she doesn’t have true friends outside of her siblings. Rather than just brush her aside, Bob is constantly trying to build her confidence. Bob was an awkward kid who didn’t have true friends. He understands and empathizes with Tina. At one point, he tells her that he would have been lucky to have had her as a friend when he was her age. He shows her the kindness that he never got as a kid.
Tumblr media
Gene is a colorful weirdo who dreams big. He’s this bubbly boy who expresses himself however he wants. His passion in life is his very odd and strange music. Bob doesn’t understand it, quite frankly. But rather than react in hostility due to his confusion, Bob looks at his son with wonder. And so many times he tries to reach out to Gene. It works, there are a lot of episodes where they spend time together. Bob, again, doesn’t really understand what Gene does or is interested in, but he tries to. He actively encourages his son’s creativity and loves how strange he is. He’s shows him the acceptance that he needed as a kid.
Tumblr media
Louise is quite different from those around her. She’s not one to just run around and ask to be friends with others. Unlike Tina, she’s fine with this. But she still has insecurities that many of us have. She worries about how others view her. Her arc in the movie is all about that. But, with the help of Linda, Bob is able to reassure Louise. Louise takes Bob’s words to heart. He’s not only her dad, he’s her best friend. They joke and banter with the knowledge that they still love one another. He gave her the companionship that he needed as a kid.
The reason Bob’s Burgers and the Belchers stand out amongst the adult animation field is that it proves something. It proves that you don’t need to be cruel and vicious to succeed. You can have an emphasis on kindness. There were notes that the writers got that the Belchers quote “liked each other too much.” But that’s part of the enjoyment for many of us. It can get exhausting watching shows like American Dad and modern Family Guy where there’s little to no love between the families. Bob’s Burgers is the opposite of those shows. It’s a damn good show and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Bob is a damn good dad.

HOW TO PLAY AS THE BELCHERS IN DND 5E
Tumblr media
Today, we're going to explore how to build the Belchers as a DnD Party. Plus Teddy. We're not really going to touch on stats. Let's be honest, the Belchers aren't really great at anything. If we were building them accurately, they'd all be super low level and/or with terrible stats. But it's your character and your campaign, so you can make them more or less optimized as you see fit. They're also all basic Humans, so we're pretty much just focusing on their classes and subclasses.
Tumblr media
BOB BELCHER
PALADIN OATH OF DEVOTION
Bob is largely defined by his principles and values. As Tina puts it, Bob is a good business owner, but a bad businessman. He cares more about providing a quality service and succeeding his way than making money. And in Little Hard Dad, he's shown to say "It's the principle of it" way too often. This to me reads as a Paladin. Given his belief in quality service and moral principles, I label him as an Oath of Devotion Paladin.
VARIANT BUILD
FIGHTER SAMURAI ARCHETYPE
Bob is pretty boring and straightforward, which makes Fighter really fitting for his personality. If he was going to model himself after anyone, he'd choose Shinji Kojima/Hawk. Thus, the Samurai archetype. However, if we're leaning purely into the boring practicality and straightforwardness of Bob, I might suggest Champion instead. It's the most Fighter-y Fighter you can build.
Regardless of his class, make sure to pick up proficiency with Cook's Utensils or the Chef Feat.
Tumblr media
LINDA BELCHER
BARD COLLEGE OF DANCE
Telling Linda Belcher not to sing or dance is like telling Tina not to talk about horses or telling Bob not to cook. It's just not going to happen. She loves the theater, she sings all the time, and she was once in an amateur garage band. All the makings of a classic bard. Given her love of dancing, I went with the College of Dance.
Tumblr media
TINA BELCHER
CLERIC LIFE DOMAIN
Tina is the family member who puts the most stock in things like fate, true love, karma, and damnation. She is also one of the characters that mentions religion more than anyone else. More specifically, she strikes me as a Cleric of Sune, the Faerunian Goddess of Love and Beauty. Sune's virtues include following your heart wherever it leads, championing love and romance at all costs, taking any risk in pursuit of love, being true to your heart and your passions without shame, and trying to make the world a more beautiful place. As such, Tina is the perfect candidate for a Cleric of Sune. Sune has two domains: Life and Light. Given that Tina has at least some interest in nursing, the Life Domain seems more in-line with Tina's values as a follower of Sune.
Tumblr media
GENE BELCHER
SORCERER WILD MAGIC ORIGIN
I know, I know. It's a sin that he's not a Bard. But Gene and Linda are very similar characters, and both work as Bards. The best thing for a party is diversity. So, I looked at Gene's personality beyond just his music. And the core of Gene is whacky nonsense. Usually, when Gene tells stories, it's an excuse for weird imagery. The Banana-fullo, Fart School, radioactive pizza sauce. Thus, the Wild Magic origin for Sorcerers spoke to me. Gene loves whacky randomness, so he would be drawn to Wild Magic. Plus, he's not really a good bard. He hates practicing, he's unfamiliar with the concept of a workbook, and kind of just expects a music career to be handed to him. Hell, when he got cast in a play and had all of two lines, he didn't memorize them, and wanted to ad lib every take. Gene's a sorcerer with the Entertainer background, but he is NOT a bard. He doesn't take his craft seriously the way Linda does.
Tumblr media
LOUISE BELCHER
ROGUE ASSASSIN ARCHETYPE
One of Louise's main skills is her ability to pick locks. Bob is literally afraid to go into her room as he expects boobie traps to hurt him. She's a clever tactician, masterminding several heists and revenge schemes. She's good at tricking people and lying to their faces to get what she wants. As for why she's an assassin, in the episode where Louise is uncertain of her future, one vignette paints as a John Wick style Wedgie-Sassin. She's also a fan of Francine, a Special Girl doll that spied on the Russians during the Cold War. She's not typically a fan of girly things, but she does like the one that's a spy. She's definitely the family member who would be the outlaw punk of the group.
RANGER GLOOMSTALKER CONCLAVE
In more recent seasons, we've seen a newfound interest in archery, with Louise even making a zombie movie centered around her blossoming hobby. The Gloomstalker/Assassin multiclass is also a very good multiclass in combat, which is why I felt it was the most fitting for Louise. She's also pretty accurate with other ranged combat like spitballs and throwing things at people.
Tumblr media
TEDDY THE HANDYMAN
ARTIFICER BATTLE SMITH
This one pretty much goes without saying. He's a mechanic and handyman, he's used to moving and hauling heavy objects, plus he's burly, making him a great fit for the party's tank. The Battle Smith is an artificer built for the front line, and they get to be joined by a mechanical ally. Teddy would absolutely take a hit for any of the Belchers. The guy also fell off a roof and walked it off, so he's definitely got the highest Constitution score of the group.
Tumblr media
I think this party turned out alright. Bob and Teddy are on the frontlines, Linda and Tina are the primary support, Gene is a ball of pure chaos and uncontrolled energy, and Louise is sniping people from the shadows. Everyone's doing what they should be doing to work as a unit, and also happen to be a fairly well-balanced party as well. This is an especially good party for low stakes and silly campaigns, but probably not the kind of party you want to bring to Barovia or Avernus.

I'm thinking about Bob' Burgers again
I've been thinking about Linda and Bob Belcher a lot lately. Bob's Burgers is my favorite show and I've noticed that everyone who watches the show shares most of the same opinions on things (almost all of them positive, very few being negative) but one thing I've seen quite a few people say is that Bob and Linda aren't good parents. They say Bob doesn't care about anything except the restaurant and Linda favors Gene and is the typical "boy mom" and as a kid whose parents are those exact things I have thoughts about it.
At no point in the show does Bob ever put anything over the well-being of his family, but he does it in subtle ways. We obviously know the restaurant is his dream, but from the movie, you can tell he cares more about it being a source of livelihood for his family, keeping a roof over their heads, and keeping them safe. He did not hesitate to follow Linda into the Mole Hill when he saw the kids' bikes. once he realized he might be taking their childhood from them like his dad did at his restaurant he didn't hesitate to fire them so they could go live their lives and have a good childhood and he didn't hesitate to go get them from the weird old people's pot farm. That episode where Gene has a bully and he tries his hardest to help him out without hesitation. The Thomas Edison episode where they think Tina's hurt and he got to her the fastest despite being portrayed as someone who hates physical activity and never does it. The stone the witch game he plays with the kids where they're throwing pillows at him and jumping all over him while he's reading and smiling so huge because he just loves having his kids around. He got his legs waxed to help Tina through her fear! It wasn't "you're too young" or "that's a stupid thing to worry about" it was "it's your body and this is your worry and also I don't know how shaving works so I'll help you through waxing"
And Linda? Linda so very obviously loves Gene but I don't think she favors him or has that toxic boy mom mentality. When Gene started dating Courtney she was so excited for him to have a new person in his life who could see how cool he was. But when Louise fell into the crime hole? The only thing she cared about was her kids safety. When Tina and Bob told her they got into that accident in the parking lot with Jimmy Pestos car and her first reaction was to scream in terror and concern for her daughter. She loves everything her kids do, she supports them in all their ventures and runs into danger for them at the drop of a dime. Her kids feel safe enough to come to her when they have problems. She brought Louise to the mother-daughter seminar because she couldn't understand why Louise didn't love her and she just wanted to be able to spend time with her and bond with her and once she found the right way to do it she put in the most effort. She sacrificed her valentine's day with Bob to help Tina after she got her heart broken. She's able to bond so easily with Gene because they love all the same things, they're basically the same person, but that doesn't mean that he's her favorite. It means they like the same things and are both more open with physical and verbal affection. Tina and Louise aren't like that and she respects them and that quality and she adapts to it and loves them the way they need and like to be shown love.
My point is that Bob and Linda are top tier parents and are tied for best tv parents with Gomez and Morticia Addams. They still make mistakes but they love their kids and each other and they're like the most functional fictional family I've ever seen, despite being chaotic and weird. There will be no Belcher slander on this blog or like ever

Fresh Meat: Big 'Bert Belcher (Big Bob)
I really enjoy imagining the toxic parallels between Fresh Meat and canon Bob's but I do worry about how it may come across online. I don't want FM to come off as needlessly toxic and abusive - that's cheap. I enjoy the complex nuance of what "toxicity" truly is (and how it ties into the fallacy of morality). Like,, fm!Bob still loves and adores his family exactly like canon, but he's a shithouse to "foodie" trend followers/hipsters (whatever term is used these days).
But Big Bob. Robert. Rob. Bert. Is a WHOLE other concept. I've really been enjoying mapping fm!Rob (thinking of calling Big Rob or Big 'Bert - to further highlight that Bob does not want to be like his dad) as a Traditionally Toxic™ kinda guy. Similar to canon, but more realistic/extreme and actually unpacking that grim shit and not just glossing over it as a "different time".
Big Bob canonically comes from a generation where the only emotions men were allowed to express were arousal or anger. He also strikes me as a man that isn't ready for therapy. So, with that, Big Bert's anger transferred into everything he did - including every interaction he had with his son. Like canon, Teen Bob worked in Big Rob's / Big Bert's diner. Thus, also like canon, fm!Bob faced endless scrutiny from his father, but not just for his creativity. For everything. Incessantly drumming into his son that you need the very best meat, and that you must cook it perfectly, but also showing his son reckless disregard for herbs, spices, and anything flavourful.
So like canon, Bob's father heavily influences Bob's career path, but because Bob wants to be nothing like his dad. So Bob journeys to reconceptualize food and people's relationship with it. It's not just a flavourless Farm Meat purely for energy and sustenance. It's an experience; a story to be told, heard, and honoured.
Unfortunately, like Real Life trauma, which implements itself in the least expected corners of your mind (whether we consent to it or not). It becomes a part of us, who we are. Bob ironically, and subconsciously, becomes more like his father than he could possibly imagine. Big Bert's ways are ingrained into Bob whether he's aware of it or not. And it is this which causes fm!Bob to lash out at novice customers, rookie foodies or just general trend followers (similar to his canon sweet potato fries meltdown). But it is this very neuroticism that makes his burgers what they are.
But unlike Big Bert, fm!Bob has never, and will never, be abusive/toxic to his family or loved ones (except teddy, but that's a whole other dynamic analysis for another time - but dw, it's partly healthy/consensual).
If the layout of my sentences is a bit scrambled/ non-linear my apologies, I'm not a writer I'm an abstract notes jotter👉😎👉 but I tried my best to make it readable to someone who doesn't live in my brain.

Actually, I just thought about something I disagree with in your theory, I don't think "dumb" or "stupid" is an accurate way of describing Mammon.
The best comparison I could think of would be Calvin Fischodeor from Bob's Burgers; a very wealthy, energetic, and somewhat immature man who does bad things, is aware they're seen as wrong, but doesn't get why and thinks people who consider him amoral are just fuddy-duddies. But most importantly, they both think in terms of business and don't really car about being insulted, and are more than willing to do good if it's profitable.
Oh and also there's literally an episode where Calvin uses prizes to convince the Belcher kids pretend to be his kids on father's day because he wanted to be a dad, I'm dead serious, that's an actual plot.
Very true, that’s a better characterisation of him than being stupid, he just doesn’t comprehend morality and has no self awareness because he’s been too privileged his whole life to ever need that. Like when he shows awareness that the robots are weird but he just says “I mean if it’ll make money sure”
It makes him more sinister that everyone assumes he’s sillier and less aware than he actually is, so when he shows insight and awareness of things you thought he wasnt observing, it catches you off guard.
Tumblr media
But also I do enjoy his goofy face he is a little bit silly

hi would u be willing to talk more ab ur belcher hcs that theyre all schizoaffective? :]
i can defs try! i cant promise i have really anything "smart" or insightful to say, cuz my husband and i just kinda draw from our own experiences :o
(if u are reading this and dont know what schizoaffective disorder is, im writing this w/ the definition of "a combination of schizophrenic symptoms and mood disorder symptoms like major depressive and bipolar disorder")
bob has felt the most schiz to us from the start, he's got his voices, which feel way more like he's acting as a mouthpiece for the objects he's talking to, rather than him just doing a bit. he knows its not "real" but also. it is to him. (i think hes also had some? hallucinations? but most are drug or stress induced and he also has a lot of cartoon dream sequences so...?) he struggles with paranoia and anxiety, and he's had pretty manic and depressive episodes in the show. i think he tries his best to stay grounded and self-aware with his delusions. he's very skeptical, and gets really irritated by misinformation. (probs also an affect of his autism tbh)
we also have a hc that he's more irritable and negative in the early seasons bc he's on meds that arent a good fit for him. (we dont really have meds hcs other than that. they might not be able to afford them)
linda's symptoms arent as obvious beyond her delusions like the raccoons and the cemetery stuff, but i think she's taught herself to suppress her issues so she could better support gayle who had more disruptive ones. her parents seem like the "stop being mentally ill its annoying" types. she has her own instances of paranoia and anxiety, but she mostly tries to smother and ignore anything negative she feels. VERY manic and impulsive tho. i think she also has some hallucinations in show but im drawing blanks on specifics.....
i would personally say tina is pretty depressive, but she's good at trying to cope in (mostly) healthy ways. her family is a good support system for her! she does have the most instances of visual hallucinations that arent cartoon bits (she seems to have them a lot when shes feeling guilty...) her anxiety and paranoia reminds me a lot of bob but also of gayle. they have similar outburts
gene has the least examples that i can think of.... i think he considers ken to be pretend and is just joking about him being real bc it annoys bob (compared to tina who thinks her horse Jericho is maybe...a little real) but i think he has some other hallucinations tht arent like that. hes surprisingly anti-social! he definitely often views himself as superior to the kids he knows. gets that from his dad lol. and his mania and impulsiveness are very much like linda :) he doesnt have depressive episodes as much as the others, but they hit him really hard :(
and louise! shes paranoid and has lots of aggression issues! to me she is also very depressed. (the puppet ep is esp relatable to me lol........) and she's VERY manic in the ambergris ep! i think she also has a couple instances of voices similar to bob's? but its kinda hard to tell the difference when shes still a kid who plays pretend with her toys. her talking to the taffy dummy feels more like what bob does tho.
i hope? thats the kind of hcs you were talking about? ive been trying to think of the right words for like 3 hours now. im very bad with words and so much of this stuff can also be attributed to other brain stuff, and one person can have a lot going on in one brain! so i hope i dont upset anyone with this post. thank u for ur time :)

More ideas for the Ginger ex-wife theory @unclefathersantateddy shared because it’s taking over my mind rn
- we know Ginger was married at some point because Linda has a bridesmaid dress from her wedding
- we also know Ginger had a partner named Tony and the Pestos’ mom was dating a guy named Alan (her “new friend”) at some point. She’s getting back out there after the divorce!
- PESTO TWINS HAIR COLOR
- Why are the Belcher and Pesto kids always hanging out if Bob hates Jimmy? Because their moms are best friends. I just know they had play dates while Linda and Ginger hung out
- Idk I can absolutely see Linda telling Ginger “just because he has a handsome face doesn’t mean he has a handsome heart”
- Jimmy hates Bob so much because Ginger saw how happy Linda and Bob were and realized she deserved better
- Jimmy Jr may look like his dad but that hair color, along with the twins, came from SOMEWHERE

Kind of a big question, but what is Maria's story, if she has one?
Thank you so much for this question!! I have a good chunk of story made for her so I’ll write what I have and hope it’s readable lol
So her parents are from Italy, her dad Valentino who’s a don for the mafia, her mom Rosa who has her own restaurant called “Marinara’s Italiano” that relocated to America (or wherever PT takes place I just say America cuz that’s where I’m from 💀) where they moved to when they had Maria. At some point, around when Maria was nearing her middle age, Rosa passes from an illness leaving Maria and her dad to hold up the restaurant for her. Prior to this Maria in her young age was a bit of a wild child and tried to live excitingly…Well as much as she could while working at the family restaurant through school n’ all. Nonetheless this event helps her mature to take the reins on the buisness. Since that loss her and her dad progressively started to have a lot of arguments more and more over the years, one of which led her to Peppino’s Pizzeria when she was running off to cool off from said argument. That’s where her and Peppino met and chatted as she started to come in the pizzeria more and more. They progressively became closer and eventually started dating!
The events of the tower happens and she’s basically along for the ride kind of like a player 2! She loves his restaurant, it’s her favorite place in the whole world, and wants to save it from annihilation just as much as he does! (Side note I initially had it part of the plot that Pizzahead threatened HER OWN family’s business too but didn’t know how I felt about it). Of course they make it out victorious with the tower crumbled and a lot of new customers and friends to fill his pizzeria seats. From that day forward Maria left her family’s restaurant to help Peppino with his and they started living together, doing her best to be a rock in his life and keeping him as sane as he can be, trying to reassure. (Slightly unrelated but just as a perspective I always saw them as a Bob and Linda Belcher relationship). She had basically no contact with her father from that point as well because of an argument about her leaving their business for Peppino’s.
That’s all I can recall writing for her but if you still wanna know more specifically I might have an answer! ^^ thanks for the question it was fun to explain!
(Designs for Maria’s parents attached here below because why not they’re mentioned)
