Book Publishing Resources
Well, since a few people said they were interested and/or that posting about it on here occasionally was a decent idea, here we go!
I'm MC Calvi, a freelance editor specializing in self-help, psychology, spirituality, paganism, workbooks, and LGBTQ books.
You can find out more about me at my website, where I also offer free twenty-minute book/publishing consultations, in addition to regular editing services.
I am also now offering some pay-what-you-can resources on my website and on Gumroad. I'm committed to offering pay-what-you-can resources because the odds are already so stacked against marginalized authors, and publishing shouldn't be pay to win.
I have two new booklets I'm actually super happy with! They both draw on my eight years of experience in the publishing industry to give authors a leg up.
And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming as I hit "publish" on another good news post!

Heyyy, Writeblr! I have a little favor to ask!
I know this is a long-shot because I'm a small writing account on Tumblr with 15 followers, but I've really been looking to get some story editing experience.
A position like that sounds really awesome in my head, and I would love to get some experience to figure out if it's a full job I'd l'd be interested in pursuing.
I guess I'm either asking for:
Resources
Mentoring
Or someone to give me a chance here
If any further details are needed/wanted, feel free to ask me through comments, asks, or even a dm. Even reblogs would help get this post more noticed probably-
Like I said, I know it's a long-shot with my small following and on Tumblr no less, but I figured I would try and ahoot my shot, at least.

Reedsy Editor - no longer free.
Reedsy Book Editor - the editing program I use for outlining, editing and keeping track of everything from characters, locations, lore, offhanded details and detailed overarching plotlines in all my writing - just overnight changed everything from a free service, into a tiered paid premium subscription, WITH NO WARNING WHATSOEVER.
Naturally, they have some stuff that is the "free tier"; and if they had given any warning - even if it was some vague email the day before implementing this - this wouldn't be as infuriating, but I suppose that was just asking too much?
Why give me a chance consider it, when they could just lock my work behind a paywall, and then refuse to even let me LOOK at my own notes?
What they've done is market themselves as a free service that will implement unspecified 'future premium features', and I quote their website directly:
"Is Studio free to use?: Yes! Reedsy Studio is currently 100% free. There will be premium features available for purchase in the future, but they are optional. Every functionality that you need to write a book in Reedsy Studio will remain free."
They then locked most of my stuff behind a paid premium, without ever hinting at their *already free* features being those 'optional premium features available for purchase'. Once again, no warning what-so-ever.
Not only have they now essentially locked my stuff behind a premium of 4.99 USD a month, oh no, they've been so kind as to lock the sole reasons I ever started using them for it's sheer convenience, the unlimited storyboards and pinned notes, behind a 7.99 USD add-on tier. Interestingly enough, they've split their features into two tiers, so if you want the full functionality that was free as late as yesterday, - such as statistics, goals or pinned notes - well, then you have to subscribe to both tiers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which means, I will now have a 7-day free trial to get all my stuff out of there, unless I want to start paying for another goddamn subscription fee.
I'm not all that happy to be strongarmed into a paid subcription, and I certainly don't trust that they won't just randomly hike the pricing or change the features included in the paid tiers in future, if this is how they implement it to begin with.
It's so blatantly obvious they've made this shift after receiving positive feedback from users, because I am wholly unsurprised that the *very same features* that made Reedsy Studio into one of the more easy-to-recommend programs (pinned notes, storyboarding, boards) have been locked behind the most expensive add-on tier. And I know a lot of people love their statistics and goals features aswell, although I personally don't use it, so them being behind a paywall too doesn't surprise me either.
I'm not a fan of paid subscriptions, but in the past I have paid for services I deemed important enough to keep around, because I liked the program or the convenience of it. Key difference: I was made aware of the changes before they were implemented.
What I refuse to do however - no matter how good their editor is or how comfortable I am using it - is to pay to be given back my access to months upon months of my own work like this.
I'm extremely disappointed in how they went about implementing this change, it's shameful.
I will be using my 7-day free trial to get my writing out of there, and then never use Reedsy again.

Editing tip:
Export your writing into an ebook and read through it, the draft on the side to edit alongside. Perhaps by seeing it in a more finished, cleaner format, you can spot inconsistencies, mistakes, and change things you deem suitable

Let's get one thing straight
...and two things bi:
I'm a trained editor
I'm taking freelance clients
I'm a fandom girly
I will be posting about writing and editing. I will happily share my sources—and names of/links to resources—with anyone who asks.
I will also be your biggest ally, because tumblr people are my people too. If you're worried an editor will balk at your language, themes, or humor, come sit by me.

This-is-trash phase
Don’t worry if you think your writing is terrible. That’s what editing is for. In fact, every masterpiece has probably been through at least one 'this is trash' phase before becoming great. Consider your trash phase character-building for both you and your story.

To help myself edit and to test the potential of self publishing this one, I ordered a proper printed copy of my book. I am currently marking it up excessively with edits, but I just have to say that it was unexpectedly THRILLING to see my book like this. I wrote this! A book! Wow.
And Im happy with how the black and white printing makes the illustrations look! More than satisfactory. Still hoping for a publisher for this one, but if not, I’ll be able to do it justice!

Hey, guys! The $5 opening price is over, and the minimum is now $10. But fret not, as I’ve also increased the word count limit for this price from 2,000 to 3,000 words. This new price is also inclusive of the Reader Report, which was previously only available as an add-on.
I also now do custom quotes for longer stories 💖
More information about the service as well as instructions on how to order can be found here:

Limited offer -- free editing!
Hey, Nat here! I have been working to set up an Upwork profile to hopefully attract more freelance clients.
Breaking into a new freelance site is... not the easiest endeavor in the world. If you don't have testimonials and reviews, people pass you over. It's understandable, but still frustrating!
To help me break in, I have a special offer that will hopefully be mutually beneficial.
I will edit up to 10k of work, any genre, for free!
OR
I will provide story mapping support, any genre, for free!
This can be fanfiction (probably needs to be a fandom I'm familiar with just to... you know... make it actually possible for me to provide feedback), or original fiction of any genre, at any skill level, at any stage of the writing/editing process. We will start with a brief emailed or DM'd consultation to go over your goals, your perceived strengths, and your frustrations. Then, I will read your work and provide actionable editing notes, or if it's a story mapping situation, we will have a back and forth conversation about your characters, your plot, etc to help set you up for success as you begin writing your novel.
It will have to be through Upwork, meaning the job will have to be "paid". Upwork's minimum is $5. I do have to charge this, BUT there are two ways we can go about it: the $5 can be a down payment toward a bigger editing project and go toward your total fee for that, OR I can refund it to you via venmo. You'd have to share the last 4 digits of your phone number with me if you want a venmo refund.
I will edit for up to 5 writers and story map for up to 20! Email me at [email protected] and we can go from there. I am working with one writer, so I have 4 spots left for editing up to 10k.
NOTE: my Upwork name is Natalie Tucker because this is my legal name. My Gmail name is Natalie Ries because this is what I go by. It is what it is. They're both me. Getting married and taking your husband's last name is a whole thing. Someday it'll all be Natalie Ries but unfortunately Natalie Tucker still lingers.
Click here to view my testimonials from past clients and a sample of my editing notes.
