‘Playing COVID roulette’: Some infected by FLiRT variants report their most unpleasant symptoms yet - Published July 8, 2024

As the summer travel season picks up, COVID cases and hospitalizations are rising in Los Angeles County — and some of those recently reinfected are finding their latest bout to be the worst yet.

There are no signs at this point that the latest coronavirus variants are producing more severe illness, either nationally or in California.

But some doctors say this latest COVID rise challenges a long-held myth: Although new COVID infections are often mild compared with a first brush with the disease, they still can cause severe illness. Even if someone doesn’t need to visit the emergency room or be hospitalized, people sometimes describe agonizing symptoms.

“The dogma is that every time you get COVID, it’s milder. But I think we need to keep our minds open to the possibility that some people have worse symptoms,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UC San Francisco infectious diseases expert.

Each time you get COVID, he said, is “kind of like playing COVID roulette.”

This underscores the need for caution during summer travel and activities, even though the overall risk remains relatively mild.

summer reminder that if you're heat intolerant or dealing with heat illness, it is okay to take off your mask, if you have to.

it is not your fault that the people around you refuse to wear their mask to protect you, themselves, and others. you are allowed to prioritze protecting yourself from heat illness, especially since heat stroke can kill you... much faster than COVID.

it's not fair at all that you'd have to expose yourself & others to the risk of a COVID infection even more. but it is not your fault. the people around us and the systems that governs us have failed. yet, you're still doing the best you can to be COVID conscious while still taking care of yourself.

that's all you can do. let the guilt go, and don't die from heat stroke. and for anyone who doesn't wear their mask when they can do so safely*: stop being neglectful and mask the fuck up.

If you live in the US your household can order more free covid tests. Starting in late september, 2024, you will be able to order more tests at https://covidtests.gov . No shipping handling or any other charges, just feeling your address and have four nasal swab tests sent to your home for free.

There is also a new covid booster coming out after labor day. If you are doing any kind of significant traveling, or you will be spending a lot of time around big groups of people like at college or school, please plan on getting this year's flu shot as well as your covid booster. We had a winter level surge over the summer, I am very worried that we are going to have an even more significant surge this fall and winter.

Summer COVID Surge - Mask Up!

I hadn't heard about this from any news site or social media (and I am very plugged into the news), but there is a summertime COVID surge happening right now.

Test positivity is up to 16%!! And hospitalizations and deaths are up as well.

I wouldn't have even known about this if my mom didn't test positive for COVID this past weekend, and it hit her incredibly hard, even though she is quadruple-vaxxed. She is on Paxlovid now, and slowly recovering, but this virus is very active right now.

So, what to do?

Begin masking again indoors and in crowded spaces.

Use hand sanitizer and wash your hands well.

If you start experiencing symptoms, please take a COVID test and self-isolate if it's positive.

If you are immuno-compromised or elderly and test positive, get Paxlovid within the first 5 days of experiencing symptoms. CVS can write you a Paxlovid prescription without a doctor's visit. And Paxlovid reduces the risk of hospitalization or death from COVID by 89%!
